eChapter
The primary objective of creating this book was to develop a comprehensive and accessible guide for students, scholars, farmers, and entrepreneurs interested in integrated livestock farming systems (ILFS). This guide provides all the necessary information required to establish any size or type of ILFS unit.
The ILFS seeks to promote sustainable agriculture by integrating animal husbandry with other essential agricultural practices. This approach has the potential to make the enterprise profitable. This guide will enhance the knowledge and skills of farmers and entrepreneurs already involved in the ILFS model or those who wish to establish an ILFS model. Ultimately, this book aims to fulfill the needs of anyone who wishes to launch a thriving and profitable venture.
1. Introduction
2. Farming System
3. Drivers and Tradeoffs in Integrated Livestock Farming Systems
4. Integration of Various Components of Farming Systems
5. Solar and Wind Energy Utilization
6. Newer Approach for Changing Farming Systems in the Light of Global Warming
7. Project Formulation and Evaluation of Various Integrated Livestock Enterprises in Light of Reducing Poverty, Livelihood Diversification, Environmental Sustainability and Resource Conservation
Bibliography
The main goal of developing this book was to create a simplified handbook on integrated livestock farming for PG. & Ph.D. scholars, farmers and entrepreneurs. This handbook has all the information need to set up any size or type of integrated livestock unit. The ILFS aims to promote agriculture holistically by integrating animal husbandry and other fundamental agricultural practice-related activities.

The large and diverse livestock resources of India benefit millions of people in rural areas, enhancing their standard of living. The key elements of sustainable agriculture are livestock resources. India has a population of 535.78 million livestock. According to 20th livestock census 2019,India ranks first in the world for the number of buffalo (109.85 million), second in number of cattle (192.49 million), third for the number of sheep (74.26 million), fifth for the number of chickens and ducks (851.81 million), and tenth for the number of camels (2.5 lakhs). About 8.8% of India’s population is engaged by the livestock industry, which provides a living for two-thirds of the country’s rural communities.

A farming system is composed of several farm activities, such as cropping systems, horticulture, livestock, fisheries, forestry, and poultry, as well as the tools the farmer has at his disposal to raise these things profitably. However, a lot of definitions generally express the same concept, which is that it is a technique to achieve profitable and sustainable agricultural production in order to meet the varied needs of the farming community while sparing the natural resource base and environmental quality.

It is the common maintenance of bee colonies by humans in hives made of man-made materials. The majority of these bees are honeybees from the genus Apis, however there are others that make honey, like Melipona. There are also stingless bees kept. A beekeeper raises bees to produce bees for sale to other beekeepers or to collect honey and other goods that hives generate, such as beewax, propolis, flower pollen, and bee pollen, to fertilize crops. An apiary, often known as a bee yard, is a place where bees are kept.

It is believed that efforts to combat poverty and advance sustainable development must include both the development of livestock and energy-related activities The relationship between energy and livestock in alleviating poverty is less clear and has just recently grown increasingly significant, despite the fact that each of these issues has been identified separately(Steinfeld et al., 2006).

The number of people is expected to increase from 7.2 billion to 9.6 billion by 2050. (UN, 2013). This represents a 33% increase in population, but the demand for agricultural products will climb by approximately 70% during the same time period as the global quality of living rises (FAO, 2009). Livestock is essential for ensuring food security.

Integrated farming places a strong emphasis on the fundamental functions of agro-ecosystems, balanced nutrient cycles that are adapted to the demands of the crops, the health and wellbeing of the farm’s livestock, and a holistic management strategy that sees the entire farm as one connected system (Kochewad et al. 2017). Family farming, often referred to as integrated farming, provides the opportunity to profitably utilize the farm family’s available labor to the fullest extent throughout the year, leading to an increase in income and family contentment.
