3.1.1. Rain water harvesting

Collecting and using precipitation water from a catchments surface.

Extensive rain water harvesting apparatus existed 4000 years ago in the Palestine and Greece.

In ancient Rome, residences were built with individual cisterns and paved courtyards to capture rain water to augment water from city’s aqueducts.

As early as the third millennium BC, farming communities in Baluchistan and Kutch impounded rain water and used it for irrigation dams.

Symptoms of pale or yellow-green leaves (chlorosis) first occur in the older leaves. At the leaf margins reaching toward the midrib or central vein, reddish tints gradually emerge. The leaves are thin. Growth overall is markedly reduced. Deficiency results in rhizome yield loss.

Materials
    (i)    Animals : Two fistulated sheep of Dala Texel breed weighing about 72 and 76 kg are selected. 
    (ii)    Experimental Diet :
        Basal Diet : Two experimental sheep are maintained on 1.1 kg early cut timothy hay per day. The ration is divided in four equal parts and offered four times a day during the preliminary period of about twenty days. One day before infusion of labelled VFA, the sheep are fed regularly at one hour interval (1.1 kg hay divided in equal parts) to help in increasing the mixing rate of rumen ingesta. The animals are given water adlibitum but they are not allowed to drink water during infusion. Digestible energy and metabolizable energy (ME) of the basal diet is determined by conducting a separate metabolism trial on the same sheep.

This practical assignment is conceptualized and operationalized to study the settlement pattern, social stratification system, family resource base, ongoing development programmes and SHG of SGSY.

PURPOSE

To acquaint students with the first-hand knowledge about the village pattern and the on-going developmental programmes.
 To study about the extension programmes like SHG of SGSY and their structure and function.

History

The law was proposed by Gregor Johann Mendel with the other laws together called as ‘Mendelian laws of inheritance’, in 1866. He used pea plant as a model organism, and studied 7 characters.

Principle

The Law of Independent Assortment, also known as “Inheritance Law”, states that alleles of different genes assort independently of one another during gamete formation. Independent assortment for two genes can be explained by assuming that the two genes are located in two different chromosomes. The two alleles of a gene will be located in the two homologues of the concerned chromosome. Independent separation of these two pairs of chromosomes at anaphase I of meiosis will lead to the independent segregation of the genes located in them. Thus any allele of one gene is equally likely to combine with any allele of the other gene and pass into the same gamete. Independent segregation of two genes produces four different types of gametes in equal proportion. A random union among these gametes gives rise to sixteen possible zygotes. These zygotes yield a 9:3:3:1 phenotypic ratio, which is known as the typical dihybrid ratio. When two pairs of independent alleles enter into F₁ combination, both of them have their independent dominant effect. These alleles segregate when gametes are formed but the assortment occurs independently at random and quite freely.

5. Description

Peelu (Salvadora oleoides) is an evergreen shrub or tree with a dense crown of numerous, drooping branches. It is small to medium sized evergreen tree with dense foliage. It can grow 6 - 9 metres tall. The main trunk is quite often twisted or bent. It can be up to 2 metres in diameter. The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of materials. Apart from edible fruits, other parts of the tree also have economic value. Leaves are very good feed for animals especially goats and camels while the twigs are used for cleaning the teeth. The other plant parts such as root bark and leaves etc have value in folk medicine. It is highly resistant against abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity.

Canning: Canning is the process by which sealing of the food product and sterilizing them by heat for long storage is known as canning.

History: The term canning was first invented by N. Appert (1804) in France. In honour of the inventor canning is also known as appertization (Appart is known as the father of canning) and Saddington (1807) in England first described the method of canning. Peter Durand (1810) got first british patent on canning of food in tin container and William under wood introduced canning of fruit on a commercial scale in U.S.A.

Principle of canning: The main principle of canning is destruction of spoilage organism by means of heat.

4.1. Water Use Efficiency (WUE)

An efficient irrigation system implies effective transfer of water from the source to the field with minimum possible loss.

To identify the nature of water loss and to decide the type of improvements in the system.

Evaluation of performance in terms of efficiency is prerequisite for proper use of irrigation water.

Zeatin: Zeatin is a cytokinin C₁₀H₁₃N₅O first isolated from the endosperm of Indian corn.

Zeaxanthin: Zeaxanthin is an isomer of lutein occurring in fruits and vegetables (spinach and corn) (Plate 260, 261 and 262).

ABSTRACT

Rubia cordifolia is an effective blood purifier in indigenous medicine. Habitat destruction and indescriminate harvesting is posing threat to its survival necessitating concerted efforts for conservation. The present study is an attempt to standardise in vitro multiplication protocol, a basic step for in vitro conservation, in Rubia cordifolia. Nodal explants cultured in MS basal medium supplemented with BA 1mg l ^-1 and IAA 0.2 mgl^-1 induced axillary bud break. The in vitro formed shoots developed roots on MS basal medium supplemented with IBA 1mg l ^-1. The plantlets were ready for plant out in 100 days of culture initiation and established well on planting out.

Term moisture stress is generally applied to the stomata opening and transpiration increases with time until they close due to high temperature.

5.1. Causes of moisture stress in plants

Main reason is extent of transpiration which is affected by leaf size and composition, size and distribution of stomata on leaf, atmospheric humidity, temperature, wind velocity and day length.

High atmospheric temperature due to intense sun and increased transpiration causes closure of stomata and wilting of leaves even, if soil moisture content is not limiting.

This deficit is made up during night due to decreased transpiration.

In plants, moisture content decreases either due to increased transpiration or reduction in absorption or both.

MIS is a system that aids management in making, carrying out, and controlling decisions.

Abstract

Studies conducted on the role of honey bees in the pollination and fruit set in apple revealed that Apis mellifera played a significant role along with pollinizer cultivars and favourable weather. Due to the paucity of pollen sources in the orchard, it is desirable to plant atleast three pollinizers like Golden Delicious, Red Gold, Tydeman Early Worcestor, Granny Smith, Lord Lambourene, Mc Intosh and James Grieve. In orchards with low population of native pollinators, introduce A. mellifera colonies at flowering for adequate fruit set (more than 5%) and yield.

The objective of nutrient use is to increase the overall performance of cropping systems by providing economically optimum nourishment to the crop while minimizing nutrient losses from the field and supporting agricultural system sustainability through contributions to soil fertility or other soil quality components. NUE addresses some but not all aspects of that performance. The most valuable NUE improvements are those contributing most to overall cropping system performance. Therefore, management practices that improve NUE without reducing productivity or the potential for future productivity increases are likely to be most valuable. An excellent review of NUE measurements and calculations was written by Dobermann (2007). Table  is a summary of common NUE terms, as defined by Dobermann, along with their applications and limitations. The primary question addressed by each term and the most typical use of the term are also listed below.
