From the manufacturer’s perspective, it includes measurable technical characteristics such as durability, seam strength, colourfastness and accuracy of fit. Consumers also evaluate less tangible qualities, including comfort, appearance, emotional satisfaction and brand perception. Understanding these dimensions enables designers, manufacturers, retailers and marketers to align product development with market expectations. They provide a framework for establishing benchmarks, maintaining product consistency and reducing defects throughout the supply chain. As fashion consumers become increasingly discerning, effective management of every quality dimension is essential for enhancing value and remaining competitive in domestic and international markets.

INTRODUCTION

Management of several of the important insect-pests of crops is becoming increasingly difficult owing to a number of factors by which pests have been able to offset the effect of control interventions. Several of the present day pest management problems may be ascribed to the excessive and indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides during the last about three decades. Routine application of insecticides for controlling insect-pests, without taking into consideration whether economic damage to the crops is being inflicted by the pest or not, has resulted into several problems like pest resistance, pest resurgence, pest replacement, killing of natural enemies of pests, presence of toxic residues in food, and soil and environmental pollution, etc., apart from increase in the cost of plant protection. Entomologists have been trying to find solution to these problems through integrated pest management of which monitoring of insect activity through regular surveys is an important component. In fact, knowledge of insect activity is indispensable since pest management system can not operate without accurate estimates of pests and natural enemies population or without reliable assessment of plant damage and its effect on yield.

14.1 Introduction

The theory of simple correlation (r_xy), regression coefficients (b_yx & b_xy) and their test of significance have been discucsed in chapter 13. The test of significance of observed partial correlation coefficient p₁₂₃(k+2) and multiple correlation coefficient R₁₂₃, have also been discussed in sections 13.4 and 13.5 respectively. Now in this chapter mainly the process of how to calculate spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, partial correlation and regression coefficients and multiple correlation coefficient using their fundamental definitions as well as appropriate statistical formule in terms of pairwise simple correlation coefficient r_ij (i = j = 1, 2, 3) in trivariate populations have been provided to make the students and its users to be familiar with basic and crystal clear concepts of the subject matter with the help of an empirical studies based on some original data on (X₁, X₂, X₃). Here X₁ has been considered as study variate and (X₂, X₃) as covariates.

Introduction

Pear (Pyrus communis L.) is one of the most important temperate fruit crops after apple in the family Rosaceae. It is diploid and a member of the Pomoideae subfamily, having chromosome number 2n=2X=34. The pear is a tree and fruit in the Rosaceae family, which also includes apples and quince. The pear has a fibrous center and is a mildly sweet fruit. It is abundant in dietary fiber, plant components, and vital antioxidants. Pears come in a variety of shapes, including round, oval, and elongated, and they can be smooth or bumpy in texture. The fruit has a thin skin that can be smooth or rough, and it ranges in color from green to yellow to red. The flesh of the pear is white, yellow, or cream-colored and is juicy and sweet, with a slightly gritty texture. Later in the 19th century, better pear cultivars were introduced in India. Pears come in second place among temperate fruits in India in terms of both production and land area. Due to the pear’s extensive climatic and soil tolerance, it is grown in both temperate and subtropical climate.

Importance and composition and uses

Pears are a good source of fiber and vitamin C, and they are relatively low in calories. Pear fruits are suggested for diabetic patients because of their low sugar content, which also lowers blood pressure and regulates heart rate. The 3.1 gm of dietary fibre it contains are very beneficial for intestinal health. About 27 to 41 mg of phenolics are present per 100 mg of fruit, making it a strong source of antioxidants. Moreover, pears have demonstrated vasodilator capabilities, and their components anti-arrhythmic effects often lower blood pressure and regulate heart rate. Fruits include the folic acid that makes up the vitamin B complex. It contains the glycoside arbutin, which has potential as a treatment for urinary tract infections. The body’s uric acid is helped to leave the body with its help. The pears’ leaves are effective in treating swelling and blisters. Fever, anaemia, and general malaise are also treated with their assistance. A destion can be made from the bark of pears. 

Abstract

Nitrate reductase (NR) catalyzes the reduction of nitrate to nitrite, which is the first step in the nitrate assimilation pathway, but can also reduce nitrite to nitric oxide (NO), an important signaling molecule that is thought to mediate a wide array of developmental and physiological processes in plants. Accordingly, the amount of NR protein and its catalytic activity are closely controlled in the cell. This chapter focuses on the posttranslational regulation of NR activity, which has been known for some time to involve reversible protein phosphorylation. The hinge 1 region of NR contains the serine-534 regulatory site, which when phosphorylated can bind a 14-3-3 protein resulting in inhibition of NR activity. This fundamental mechanism underlies the rapid modulation of NR activity in leaves in response to light/dark transitions, and the activation of NR that occurs in response to hypoxia (e.g., as with soil flooding). Recent results suggest that the basis for hypoxia-induced NR activation, which is thought to be essential for plant survival, may involve reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as H₂O₂, that are produced in response to many plant stressors including hypoxia.

Abstract

Potassium is a very essential nutrient element that is required for proper health, growth, functioning and productivity of plants. However, up to 98% of this very important mineral is held up in insoluble, unavailable forms in the soil and with only approximately 2% soluble form available for plant use. Biofertilizers add nutrients to the soil for plant use by some mechanisms like the breakdown of phosphorus, potassium, fixing nitrogen, and also synthesizing some substances which in turn enhance plant growth. These processes take place naturally. Microorganisms that solubilize potassium have demonstrated an increased potassium uptake by plants when added as bio-inoculants consequently resulting in increased yield by these plants. This article reviewed the methods of isolation of potassium solubilizing bacteria and fungi and their use as biofertilizers. Data are presented showing summary of researches conducted on potassium solubilizing microorganisms and their findings. Figures on production efforts of biofertilizers in India per year and by states are also added.

7.1 Introduction

Evaporation is an unit operation which converts a liquid into a vapour, leaving behind a concentrated solution or a higher boiling liquid. In other words, the goal of evaporation is to vaporize most of the water from a solution containing a desired product. Heat is the main tool in evaporation, and the process occurs more readily at high temperature and low pressures. Removal of water from foods provides microbiological stability, reduces deteriorative chemical reactions, and reduces transportation and storage costs. Evaporation can be distinguished from some other drying methods in that the final product of evaporation is a concentrated liquid, not a solid. It also differs from distillation, since the vapours produced in the evaporator are not further divided into fractions.

Abstract

Similar to other north eastern states of India, the state of Manipur is also prone to recurring landslides. The National Highway 150 and the state Highway in Ukhrul, Nunghar and Paorei sectors often witness landslides due to geological complexities, rainfall and anthropogenic activities. So a study was conducted to prepare the landslide hazard zonation map for the region using the method developed by Bureau of Indian Standards, which indicates that 67.32 km² (nearly 56%) fall under high hazard zone. The RMR and SMR studies carried out in five test sites in such high hazard zone show that four sites fall under highly unstable category (class IV) and one under partially unstable category (class III). The kinematic analysis indicates dominant wedge failure. The improper landuse, lack of adequate drainage and toe removal for road widening are the major causative factors for the recurring landslides.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus Moench), otherwise known as Lady’s finger or Bhindi is an annual malvaceous plant and the sixth important vegetable crop cultivated throughout the country mostly in kharif and summer seasons. Though it is reported to be originated from tropical and sub-tropical Africa, but it has gained much importance in India as the secondary centre of origin. India ranked first in okra production in the World and major okra producing Indian states are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Assam (Anonymous, 2011).

The word Cymbidium has been derived from a Greek word ‘Kumbos’ meaning ‘hole or cavity’ referring to the structure of the base of the lip. The genus consists of 44 known evergreen species in the family Orchidaceae, subfamily Vandoideae, tribe Cymbidieae and sub-tribe Cryptopodiinae. It is distributed from northwestern India to China, Japan, south through the Malay Archipelago to the north and east Australia. (DuPuy and Cribb, 1988). Cymbidiums have been for over hundred years one of the most famous orchids in commerce.

Abstract

The major objective of this chapter is to examine how knowledge management initiative can bring competitive edge and help organizations to compete in a knowledge era. People now viewed as being the most valuable asset and ‘people management’ being a pertinent issue in knowledge management, the pivotal role of HR is being increasingly recognized by the organizations in a knowledge economy. The chapter starts with a discussion on the nature of knowledge management, theory, and process and then explores the role of human resource practices in facilitating the KM process in organizations. The author examines how different HRM practices like talent management, performance management, training and development, fostering trust, reward systems, institutionalizing learning systems and leadership can be linked with the knowledge management process to achieve competitive advantage.

• Rice blast is the most important disease concerning the rice crop in the world.
• It has been found in over 85 countries across the world.
• The disease was first recorded in China in 1637.
• In India, occurrence of this disease was first reported from the Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu in 1918.
• The disease now occurs in almost all principal rice growing areas of India.
• Every year the amount of crops lost to rice blast could feed 60 million people.
• In severe cases losses amounting to 70-80% of grain yield was recorded.

Introduction Cauliflower Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) is a cold season vegetable cropbelongs to family cruciferous or Brassicaceae family with somatic chromosome number 2n = 18. Cauliflower is derived from the Latin word i.e., ‘caulis’ means stem and ‘floris’ means flower and wild progenitor is Brassica cretica. In India, cauliflower is grown in two different varieties: snowball type and tropical type. However, at first, other varieties of cauliflower, such as the European and Cornish types from England, were also brought to India. Later, the Cornish and European forms of cauliflower were intercrossed to develop the tropical type of cauliflower. The Indian type or tropical type of cauliflower can be grown in hot weather and high rainfall condition therefore, such type of cauliflower is mostly grown in Indian plains during the month of May to January followed by temperate type or snowball group based on the temperature based varietal classification.

The English name ‘Pest’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Pestis’, which means causing destruction. Pests are defined as ‘those organisms, which compete with man in his food supply, damage his possessions and attack himself’. They are of vital concern to mankind in their everyday life, as they cause considerable damage directly as well as indirectly to crops, domestic animals, birds and to man himself. They are also responsible for causing or transmitting many serious diseases. Pests include thousands of invertebrates such as, insects, nematodes, mites, ticks, snails and slugs, crabs etc. and vertebrates such as, rats, squirrels, jackals, pigs and boars, porcupines, rabbits, deers, bats, some species of birds etc., which are destructive to plants and livestock. Several microorganisms such as, fungi, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, phytoplasma etc. are also pests in nature. Weeds and phanerogamic parasites are also pests in the true sense.

Introduction 
Jatropha, a genus belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, comprises 175 species and has its origins in tropical America and Mexico, later spreading to the tropics and subtropics of Asia and Africa (Divakara et al., 2010). In Asian countries, India, China, and Myanmar account for more than 85% of Jatropha cultivation, while Africa and Latin American countries like Brazil and Mexico make up 12% and 2%, respectively. India stands as the largest cultivator of Jatropha (Kumar and Sharma, 2008). Historically, Jatropha has been utilized for various purposes, including storm protection, soil erosion control, firewood, hedges, and traditional medicines (Openshaw, 2000; Gubitz et al., 1999; Heller, 1996; Kaushik and Kaushik, 2011). The seed oil of Jatropha has also been used as lamp fuel, soap manufacturing ingredient, paints, and lubricant (Gubitz et al., 1999; Achten et al., 2007; Brittaine and Lutaladio, 2010). The characteristics of Jatropha seed oil closely resemble those of diesel (Pramanik, 2003; Foidl et al., 1996; Augustus et al., 2002), earning it the title of a biodiesel plant (Pandey et al., 2012). Jatropha thrives on diverse wastelands without requiring agricultural inputs like irrigation and fertilization and its seeds contain 40 to 60% oil content (Pandey et al., 2012; Achten et al., 2007). The plant’s easy propagation, rapid growth, drought tolerance, pest resistance, higher oil content compared to other oil crops, adaptation to a wide range of environmental conditions, short gestation period and optimal plant size and architecture which facilitate seed collection (Divakara et al., 2010), make it a promising crop for biofuel production (Abou Kheira and Atta, 2009; Fairless, 2007). The oil extracted from Jatropha curcas L. is primarily converted into biodiesel for use in diesel engines. The protein-rich cake resulting from oil extraction can be used as fish or animal feed after detoxification. Additionally, it serves as a biomass feedstock for electricity generation or biogas production and is a high-quality organic fertilizer (Gubitz et al., 1999). Crop improvement in Jatropha curcas L. focuses on enhancing its potential as a biodiesel feedstock by addressing challenges like low yield, variable oil content and narrow adaptability. Efforts in selection and breeding aim to identify highyielding genotypes with desirable traits such as high oil content, early maturity and resistance to pests and diseases. Hybridization and mutation breeding are used to introduce genetic diversity and develop improved varieties suited to diverse environmental conditions. Water is fundamental to life, supporting ecosystems, driving economies, and sustaining human well-being. However, the availability of this essential resource is increasingly threatened by hydrological drought, a complex phenomenon characterized by prolonged deficits in surface and subsurface water supplies. Unlike meteorological drought, which is defined by precipitation shortages, hydrological drought manifests as reduced stream flow, diminished lake and reservoir levels, and depleted groundwater, impacting water availability long after the rains have ceased. This chapter looks into the critical aspects of hydrological drought management, exploring the multifaceted nature of this challenge and outlining strategies to mitigate its devastating consequences. We will navigate the intricate web of factors that contribute to hydrological drought, from climatic drivers to the profound influence of human activities. Understanding these causes is paramount to developing effective management approaches.

The soil microorganisms thrive on organic matter in soil by feeding readily on soluble substrates and rather slowly on insoluble substrates. Organisms derive carbon and energy during the process of organic matter decomposition and release organically-bound carbon, thereby decrease C :N ratio and utilize nutrients. Any decrease in organic matter content in soil is likely to affect the microbial biomass and their activities thereby influence the soil fertility and productivity. It is, therefore, imperative to recycle the organic matter in soil in whatsoever form it may be. The raw organic matter requires appropriate treatment to boost decomposition process.

Abstract: The most popular ornamental monotypic species chinensis, is an important annual flower, used commercially as cut flower for interior decoration, bedding, potting and landscape purpose. Currently, there are many interspecific hybrid cultivars from this species on the market. The influence of breeding methods on the selection criterion and selection procedures is discussed. Information on variability and correlation is included. Ample genetic information and trait heritability has been established for this crop. Traits of interest to flower breeders for crop transformation include plant architecture, flowering (colour, size, timings), attractive flower heads, extended bloom time, horizontal placement of flowers, floral longevity, earliness, healthy foliage or other morphological traits. Future crop ideotypes are proposed to continue transformation of this crop for large scale cultivation.

In agricultural practices pesticide application is an inevitable factor for maintaining high crop productivity and is currently an integral part of modern farming. Pests (insects, microbes and weeds) cause approximately 20-30% loss in crop production so making pesticide use indispensable for crop protection.
 
Pesticide : A pesticide may be defined as ‘any agent or chemical or a mixture of chemicals/ substances intended to prevent, destroy, repel or irritate one or more pest populations causing economic loss in crop production’. Worldwide more than 450 active pesticide chemicals formulated into more than 10,000 commercial products are currently used by farmers. The most worrying aspect is that about two-third of the 800 chemicals tested so far have been found involved in causing or promoting tumor in rodents. Yet more than 50,000 synthetic chemicals/formulations remain untested so far.
