Whatever may be the source of irrigation water viz., river, canal, tank, open well or tube well, some soluble salts are always dissolved in it. The main soluble constituent in water are Ca, Mg, Na and K as cations and chloride, sulphate bicarbonate and carbonate as anions. However ions of other elements such as lithium, silicon, bromine, iodine, copper, cobalt, fluorine, boron, titanium, vanadium, barium, arsenic, antimony, beryllium, chromium, manganese, lead, selenium phosphate and organic matter are also present. Among the soluble constituents, calcium, sodium, sulphate, bicarbonate and boron are important in determining the quality of irrigation water and its suitability for irrigation purposes. However other factors such as soil texture, permeability, drainage, type of crop etc., are equally important in determining the suitability of irrigation water.

The following are the most common problems that result from using poor quality water.

Introduction

Vegetables are essentially important functional foods capable of providing additional physiological benefits such as delaying onset of chronic diseases apart from meeting basic nutritional requirements. Vegetables constitute a significant source of carotenoids, phenolics, vitamin C, flavonoids and glucosinolates which boost the immune mechanism and have medicinal properties. The antioxidants in tomato, onions, carrots, garlic, brussel sprouts, peppers and green leafy vegetables and their potential health benefits are critically discussed.

Oxidative damage to biological molecules like DNA, protein and lipids induced by free radicals is considered to be linked with many degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular, cancer, ocular and neurological such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Antioxidants from plant sources preserve an adequate function of immune cells against homeostatic disturbances and act as functional foods. Functional foods are foods which besides fulfilling the basic physiological function, have health promoting effect. There is a considerable epidemiological evidence indicating association between diets rich in vegetables and a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and certain forms of cancer. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of antioxidant compounds like vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, flavonoids, tannins and other phenolic constituents which boost the immune mechanism.

Chemical Synthesis Methods

Several methods can be used for the production of these nanoparticles, namely: (i) top-down methods (Li et al., 2006) such as vacuum sputtering (Kuhn et al., 2002) or the decomposition of iron penta carbonyl (Fe(CO)5) in organic solvents (Karlsson et al., 2005); and (ii) bottom-up methods that promote the ‘growth’ of the nanostructures via chemical synthesis, for example through the reaction of iron(II) or iron(III) salts with sodium borohydride (Wang and Zhang, 1997). However, these methods present several limitations and problems; the top-down methods are generally expensive and require specific and costly equipment while the drawbacks of the bottom-up approaches are related to safety issues due to the toxicity of sodium borohydride, the production of flammable hydrogen gas during the process (Li et al., 2006), and the tendency to form large agglomerates, very fast and at a high extent, and therefore have a reduced reactivity and degradation efficiency.

The Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks is governed by two treaties. The first one is he Madrid Agreement, which was concluded in 1891 and revised at Brussels (1900), Washington (1911), The Hague (1925), London (1934), Nice (1957) and Stockholm (1967), and amended in 1979. The other one is the Protocol related to this agreement which was concluded in 1989. The aims of this protocol are to make the Madrid system more flexible and more compatible with the domestic legislation of certain countries or intergovernmental organizations that had not been able to accede to the Agreement. 

Working Principle: An autoclave is a sealed device that creates a different environment from the outside world under extraordinarily high pressure (Auto + clave = automatic locking). It uses moist heat or saturated steam under pressure to kill microorganisms and heat-resistant endospores. Its function is compared to that of a pressure cooker, i.e., steam is used to create a high pressure environment. However temperature of autoclave or steam sterilizer is generally maintained at 121°C for 15-20 minutes that is achieved by raising the pressure inside the device. This high pressure increases the boiling point of water and therefore raises the temperature that is too high for the microbes to survive, so used for sterilization.

Types of Autoclave cycle

1. Liquid cycle: Liquids take time to sterilize as they have high heat capacity. It is based on the principle of pressurized steam at 15 psi, 121°C temperature for 20 minutes. It has latent heat, which is 7× heat 100°C. Liquids and biological waste require slow exhaust to prevent the boiling over of super-heated liquids. This excess temperature is enough to hydrolyze the proteins of bacteria, viruses, or any other contaminant and therefore kill it. However, wet heat is seven times more intense than dry heat, so it requires less temperature than the dry heat cycle of the autoclave.

2. Dry Cycle: Here, steam is the sterilization medium, which penetrates inside the load and makes contact with all the surfaces, so a fast exhaust cycle is used. It has a high temperature of 160°C for 60 minutes.

Introduction
This method is used to determine the ‘total bacterial count’ (living and dead  organisms) by direct microscopic examination in samples of broth culture, cell suspension and milk. Simple and Gram’s staining techniques are used to stain the cells. This method is simple and a rapid. A known volume (0.01 ml) of the sample is spread over a known area (1cm2) on a glass slide. The sample is allowed to dry; then stained and examined microscopically. The average number of cells per field is determined and is then calculated by applying microscopic factor.

Many anesthetic drugs are available to immobilize the lab and wild animals. In wild animals, immobilizing agents are usually administered by intramuscular injection.

    1.    Water activity (a_w) affects food chemistry and can be controlled by removal (dehydration or drying) or by chemically binding the water, reducing its activity. Water activity in foods ranges from 0.95 to 1.00 in fresh meats and vegetables to 0.20 in dried milk.

    2.    Water activity (a_w) may be defined in a number of ways, qualitatively, aw is a measure of unbound, free water in a system available to support biological and chemical reactions.

    3.    Water activity, not absolute water content, is what bacteria, enzymes, and chemical reactants encounter and is affected by at the micro environmental level in food materials.

    4.    Two foods with the same water content can have very different aw values depending upon the degree to which the water is free or otherwise bound to food constituents.

    5.    The term “water activity” is related to relative humidity. Relative humidity is defined as the ratio of the partial pressure of water vapour in the air to the vapour pressure of pure water at the same temperature.

Principle

Determination of the precise sequence of nucleotides in a sample of DNA is called “DNA Sequencing”. The most popular method for doing this is called the “Dideoxy method or Sanger Method” (named after Frederick Sanger, who was awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in chemistry for inventing it). DNA is synthesized from four deoxynucleotide triphosphates. The top most figure is a normal nucleotide: deoxythymidine triphosphate (dTTP). During polymerization each new nucleotide is added to the 3' -OH group of the last nucleotide added.

The dideoxy method has been coined after the synthetic nucleotides that lack the –OH at the 3’carbon atom of the sugar and it plays an important role in this process atom (red arrow). In the figure below dideoxythymidine triphosphate — ddTTP, a dideoxynucleotide has been shown that can be added to the growing DNA strand. But the chain elongation ceases when the next nucleotide tries to get attached to the former as there is no 3' -OH for the next nucleotide to be attached to. Hence, the dideoxy method is also called the chain termination method. 

ABSTRACT

Myriophyllum aquaticum (Velloso) Verdcourt, commonly known as ‘parrot feather milfoil’ is the aquatic plant belonging to the family Haloragaceae. The plant gets the name ‘parrot feather’ from its feather-like leaves arranged around the stem in whorls of 4 to 6 giving it the value of a beautiful aquarium plant. It is a commercially valuable imported aquatic plant used in aquarium plant trade. These plants are exclusively females and as such no seeds are produced. Moreover, current macropropagation techniques are insufficient to produce sufficient propagules for the domestic and export market. Tissue culture techniques offer great opportunities in this regard and attempts were made for micropropagation of this valuable species. A viable protocol has been outlined for the in vitro mass multiplication of Myriophyllum aquaticum. Shoot regeneration was induced from nodal segments and leaves in half strength Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium supplemented with 1.0 mg l^-1 benzyl adenine. Incorporation of 0.2 mg l^-1 kinetin along with benzyl adenine in the culture medium resulted in a marked increase in the frequency (1:20) of multiple shoot formation. The in vitro raised plantlets were successfully rooted, hardened and planted out. The protocol is ready for commercialization.

Pituitary gland (Hypophysis cerebi)

The pituitary gland (hypophysis cerebri) lies at the base of the skull and is housed within a bony structure called the sella turcica in the body of the besisphenoid bone. It is a small pea shaped gland which is attached to the hypothalamus by the pituitary stalk. The pituitary gland has two distinct parts called the lobes. These are the anterior lobe (adenohypophysis) and the posterior lobe (neurohypophysis). The anterior lobe which is also called as anterior pituitary consists of five types of cells, each of which secretes different hormone or hormones. The types of cells, the hormones secreted by each type and the functions performed by them are narrated below.

The thyrotrophs secrete thyroxin called as Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). It stimulates production of thyroid hormone.

The gonadotrophs secrete leuteinizing hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). The LH stimulates the production of oestrogen and progesterone by the ovaries in female and testosterone by the testes in male. The FSH stimulates the production of oestrogen and the growth of egg cells (oocytes) in the ovaries in female and sperm cells (spermatozoa) in the testes in male.

The corticotrophs secrete the Adreno-Cortico-Trophic Hormone (ACTH) which stimulates the production of cortisol and adrenogenic hormones by the adrenal cortex.

The somatotrophs secret Growth Hormone (GH). The GH is a growth promoting hormone which regulates the growth and differentiation of the skeletal system.

The lactotrophs secrete the Prolactine Hormone. The prolactine hormone is responsible for initiation of milk secretion by the acinar cells of the mammary gland.

It is the most significant international convention in the field of protecting copyright. The Berne Convention deals with the protection of works and the rights of their authors. It is based on three basic principles and contains a series of provisions determining the minimum protection to be granted, as well as special provisions available to developing countries that want to make use of them. The Berne Convention, signed on 9 September, 1886, was revised at Paris in 1896 and at Berlin in 1908, completed at Berne (Switzerland) in 1914, revised at Rome in 1928, at Brussels in 1948, at Stockholm in 1967 and at Paris in 1971, and was amended in 1979.

Although there have been multiple biomarkers for mammary tumors both in human and canines reported over the time (Table 3), but no absolute biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of CMT has been found yet. Out of several studies on clinical applications of different mammary tumor biomarkers, some showed a particular promising biomarker, on the other hand controversial results also existed for the same. For example, HER-2, which is one of the most prominent bio-marker both in HBC and CMT. HER-2 overexpression is associated with poor prognosis and reduced overall survival of the subject, but there are studies available which suggest no difference in HER-2 expression between benign and malignant tumors and studies showing HER-2 expression suggesting prolonged survival (Kaszak et al., 2018). Various biomarkers of mammary tumors are not mammary tumor specific such as p53, COX-2, PCNA etc. These markers undergo alterations in their expression level in all tumors. By keeping this in mind we need to device a panel of different markers to ensure the correct prognosis and diagnosis of canine mammary tumors. There are limited studies and only few commercial kits (for human) available using such combinations (Table 4).

The land is one of the basic natural resources for agricultural growth and development of a country. Investment on agricultural land improvement by way of land leveling, contour bunding, sinking of well for irrigation and resorting to other measures like treating the soil to reduce acidity etc. have been continuous effort of agriculturists for increasing productivity.In addition, new variety of seeds which are high yielding and pest resistant are sought after by farmers for increasing production. Efficient land management encompassing soil and water conservation is the building block for sustainable agricultural development.

Land tenure rules define the ways in which property rights to land are allocated, transferred, used, or managed in a particular society. Ownership of land plays a significant role for improvement of land and its management. If the land is tenanted,the tiller of the land has less stake on long term measures on land.For centuries, the land tenure system in India was based on intermediaries known as Zamindary system.In Odisha, the tenurial system has based on the Bengal Rents Act, the Bengal Tenancy Act, the Bihar & Orissa Tenancy Act and finally, the Orissa Tenancy Act.In addition, theCentral Province Tenancy Act and the Central Province Land Revenue Act were in vogue in the Sambalpur district when the Orissa province was formed. Further, theGanjam district was under the Madras Estates Land Act(MELA). All these laws defined and classified the tenurial system.If one examines the OT Act one would find series of intermediaries between the proprietor and actual tiller of land.Tenure-holders had under-tenure holders. Raiyats had under-Raiyats. Tenants also inducted sub-tenants.

Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD)

Chronic respiratory disease is caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and E.coli in birds under poor management and characterized by cloudy air sacs with thickening of their wall, accumulation of cheesy material in air sacs and lungs (Fig.6.1).
