Abstract

Invasion of field crops, orchards and waste-lands by weeds is a matter of concern for farmers and foresters because of the drag they inflict on productivity and the increase in cost of production involved in weed control. Science-based technologies offer workable and reliable recourse to minimizing and/or eliminating these losses to promote healthier and rewarding livelihoods. While studies have been conducted to combat brush-weed in waste-land and plantations, little work has been done on such aspects as biological control of weeds, development of herbicide resistance in weeds, and allelopathic interface of crops and weeds. In this chapter, attempt is made to assess the economics of weed management in major crops. Aspects of R&D on weed management that should be addressed for safeguarding yield in the future are highlighted with particular reference to situation in western Himalaya.

SUMMARY

The primary requirement for sustainable agriculture is the maintenance of a satisfactory balance of water, air and salt in the root zone encouraging for plant growth. This balance can be achieved by sufficient drainage. About 22% of the World's irrigated area is affected by waterlogging and salinity. Vertical drainage by pumping can control the increase of ground water table in those areas where the ground water is of good quality. Horizontal sub-surface drainage in which the saline ground water is drained away through pipes and drains, is the other regularly used anti waterlogging methods. In bio-drainage system, the characteristic of the trees to transpire water is used to control the increase of ground water table. It is an alternative drainage method, which would be most economical and environmental congenial. But there are worries and doubts on the long-term sustainability of biodrainage. This chapter describes various aspects of biodrainage.

Introduction
The 2022 edition of the United Nation’s global forest sector outlook for 2050 presented an update on the current patterns of wood consumption, its rising tendency, and projected future demand of primary processed wood to total 3.1 billion cubic meters of round wood equivalents (FAO, 2022). In addition, up to 199 million m³ would be required to substitute for non-renewable materials. Planted forests contributed around 46 percent to the global industrial round wood supply in 2020. However, globally the supply of wood from planted forests is always lower than the actual demand. Increasing population, urbanisation, economic development and consumption pattern are some of the major driving causes behind the demand in growth of wood and wood products. Wood security is defined as long-term availability of wood and wood products (sawn wood, veneer, plywood, particleboard, pulp, wood fuel and other primary wood products) for domestic and industrial requirements. The deficiency in the wood supply chain will continue to increase, and when the world population touches 9.4 to 10.2 billion, a 22 to 34% increase, the demand-supply imbalance will also increase. This supply gap would result in a shift in consumption patterns and lead to increase in environmentally harmful products such as petroleum-based plastics. Hence to meet the basic wood demand in 2050, at world level an additional 33 million ha of highly productive plantation forest would need to be established to meet the industrial round wood demand (FAO, 2022).
New demands for forest ecosystem continue to surge based on the Sustainable Development Goals, and mitigation of climate change related issues, water and other goods and services. Along with policy measures to directly act on existing forest resources conservation, increase in tree plantations with management interventions to increase productivity is necessary to fulfil the wood supply demands (McMaho and Jackson, 2019). Globally, the area under plantation forestry is on the rise (McEwan et al. 2020). Numerous studies (Silva et al. 2019; Carle et al. 2020; Pinnschmidt et al. 2023), highlight that plantation forests increasingly fulfil the ecological services provided by natural forests. Over the past decades climate change and climate related disaster risks have become more important than ever. The effects of climate change are unprecedented today and thus pose serious risks for human wellbeing, livelihoods and life-supporting systems. They also present serious challenges to society, in addition, increased climate variability significantly undermine the socio-economic development and environment. The consequences of climatic change, such as increase in frequency and extent of droughts, floods, cyclones, mudslides and avalanches have impacts on all sectors of economy including water, agriculture, fisheries, health, forestry, transport, tourism and energy sectors. Amongst these sectors, the agricultural sector is one of the most vulnerable sectors to impacts of climate change, which can have multiplicative effects on other sectors, as well as the economy and overall human being. The projected climate change towards warming may affect not only the crop cultivation but also on agro-climatic conditions for growing pasture vegetation, forming of feed stocks in pastures and conditions for grazing livestock. Favourable conditions for grazing livestock are determined, on the one hand, by sufficient amount of forage in pastures and on the other, by the extreme weather conditions that restrict the use of these fodders.

An earthen dam is an embankment constructed primarily from compacted soil to impound runoff and create a reservoir. Such dams support irrigation, water supply, groundwater recharge, hydropower generation, and flood moderation. Their successful performance depends on suitable site conditions, proper materials, adequate compaction, controlled seepage, stable slopes, and safe disposal of surplus water. This chapter introduces the advantages and limitations of earthen dams, construction materials, types of embankment sections, and their principal components. Particular attention is given to cut-offs, impervious cores, casing or shells, foundations, filters, drainage systems, spillways, outlets, slope protection, and common causes of deterioration or structural failure.

Membranes separation processes have gained widespread applications in food industry. High selectivity of membrane has been exploited for separating a particular component from complex liquid food mixture and for controlled release of active ingredients like preservatives or flavor compounds. Today, a number of chemical processes utilizing the unique properties of membrane have been developed for commercial application in food industry with specific advantage of low energy requirement. Membrane separation/molecular sieving is one among those food engineering principals which has found broad range of applications including concentration of heat labile compounds, recovery of solvent, downstream processing, flavor volatile recovery, deacidification, desalination, waste water treatment etc

Integrated farming system is a multidisciplinary whole farm approach, which enables the farmers to identify opportunities and threats and act accordingly. It is a dynamic approach which can be applied to any farming system around the world. It is very effective in solving the problems of small and marginal farmers.

Abstract

The balance between resources and population constitute the solid base for drawing the future map of sustainable development in the study area in all developmental sectors such as agriculture, industry, tourism, and commercial sectors. Geoenvironmental hazards such as erosion, sea level changes, sand dune encroachment, siltation of the navigation channel of the Damietta harbor, salinization of the soils, the negative effects of the protective structures and bad management of the coastal areas must be studied in details before making the future planning for any area. The main geomorphologic units in this area are: beaches, sand dunes, wetlands, urban areas, reclamation lands and lagoons.

The rate of erosion from 1984 to 2000 in the Rosetta beach is -117.6 m/yr, while it is -17.6 m/yr in the Damietta beach. On the other hand, the rate of erosion in the period from 1984 to 2005 is -104.6 m/yr and -11.4 m/yr in Rosetta and Damietta beaches, respectively. Since, Nile Delta is a typical wave dominated delta (Coleman et al., 1981) and Tide is a semi-diurnal microtidal regime with a maximum tidal range of 50 cm (UNESCO/UNDP, 1978), the erosion and accretion are very dangerous hazard in the area.

Due to the reclamation of vast areas of the coastal dunes, the lagoons and wetlands, the new reclaimed lands are added to the agricultural deltaic land. Thus, the coastal sand dunes, lagoons and wetlands are decreased. The main urban centers have expanded, and new urban centers (Damietta harbor, the New Damietta city and Mansoura city in near future) have been constructed at the expense of vast areas of lagoons, coastal dunes, and backshore flats. The siltation of the navigation canal of the Damietta harbor, salting of the soil (new and old) and sand dune encroachment are very important hazards in the study area. All the previous geoenvironmental hazards and others threaten the sustainable development in the study area.

The world’s greatest source of cow and buffalo diversity is India, and countries like Australia, South Africa, Latin America, and the USA employ Indian cattle breeds to grow their livestock industries. The number of cattle in the nation represents 17% of all cattle in the world. 22-25% of the Indian cow population is made up of the best native milk, draught, and dual-purpose animal genetics. The majority of local cattle breeds are excellent drafters. Native livestock breeds are clearly superior in their use of subpar feed, have better heat tolerance, and greater resistance to tropical diseases.

Abstract

Advances in genome sequencing technologies have made it possible to uncover the whole genome sequences of numerous organisms from microbes to higher eukaryotes. Haemophilus influenza, a free living bacterium, was the first complete genome to be sequenced in 1995 by a team headed by J. Craig Venter and Hamilton Smith at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR). Immediately after this, Mycoplasma genitalium, a bacterium responsible for reproductive-tract infections and well-known for having the shortest genome of all free-living organisms was sequenced. Subsequently, TIGR unearthed the genome sequences of many microbes like Methanococcus jannaschii, Archaeoglobus fulgidus, Helicobacter pylori, Borrelia burgdorferi etc. During the years 1996-2000, the complete genome sequences of several model organisms such as bacterium Escherichia coli K-12, baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster etc were published. Since then the complete genome sequences of many other eukaryotes have been released by the genome sequencing community.

The products produced are used in making furniture, musical instruments, and building constructions like doors, windows, desks, chairs, cupboards, etc., of a place utilizing a specific kind of wood with the help of tools known as carpentry tools. Different wooden pieces are connected to make a useful product. Wood is used to make furniture, boxes, doors, windows, industrial floors, stairs, pencils etc.

Abstract

Water is the elixir of life, livelihood, food security and indispensable to all economic activities. It is going to be a constraint in agriculture in near future due to the competitive demands from other sectors. Agriculture is the largest user of limited water resources. The Gangetic Bengal basin once described as the areas of excess water now suffers from acute dearth of water during the drier months. Water management holds the key for maximum agricultural production through optimizing the utilization of available water resources in a systematic manner. Drip-irrigation provides unique agronomic, water and energy conservation benefits that address many of the challenges facing irrigated agriculture. In intensive agriculture, both fertilizer and irrigation management have contributed immensely in increasing the yield and quality of crops. The method of fertilizer and irrigation application affects the efficiency. Drip-fertigation is the most efficient and less expensive agronomically sound method of fertilizer application along with irrigation water. It has the potential to ensure that the right combination of water and nutrient is available at the active root zone, in synchrony of the plants’ total and temporal requirements and stabilizes the yield and quality of produce. Fertigation saves fertilizer nutrients as it permits applying fertilizer in small quantities at a time matching with the plants’ nutrients’ need. INTRODUCTION

Crataegus species, or hawthorn, are shrubs or small trees that have been widely and globally used for treating cardiac problems (arrhythmia, angina, hypertension and gastrointestinal ailments. Fruits of the plant are also consumed as food and nutritional supplement. Crataegus species has several pharmacological properties attributable primarily to presence of flavonoids and anthocyanins. The major flavonoids reported are hyperoside, vitexin, and glycosylated derivatives of these compounds. Crataegus has been listed as the plant for future in terms of its utility and significance. Though the species can be easily grown, its commercial cultivation is not yet popular. This presentation highlights the medicinal significance of the species for its greater utilization.

Introduction

Welding is a fabrication process in which two or more materials or metal pieces are joined or fused with the application of heat, pressure, or both allowing them to cool and this causes fusion. Besides the work piece, a filler material is also sometimes added to the joint to form a pool of molten material that cools to form a joint based on welding and that will be stronger than the parent metal.

Arc Welding and its Types

It is a process of joining two metals using an electric current generated by the power supply, which gives the required amount of heat to metal pieces through which the metals melt and when the metal cools, which results in the binding of the two metals. In the case of this type of welding, the power supply is given, which creates an electric arc between the electrode and the metal rod. Both A.C. or D.C. power supplies can be used in arc welding and both consumable and non-consumable rods can be used.

Introduction

In many of the experimental designs considered previously like CRD and RCBD ,the main feature was to compare varieties,methods of cultivation,different kinds of fertilizers, etc. In general, in such experiments, only one factor is allowed to vary at a time, while all other factors known to affect the response are generally controlled. Such experiments are called ‘Simple’, or ‘Classical’ experiments.

Biological organisms are simultaneously exposed to many growth factors during their lifetime. Because an organism’s response to any simple factor may vary with the level of the other factors, simple factor experiments are often criticized for their narrowness. Indeed, the result of a single-factor experiment is, strictly speaking, applicable only to the particular level in which the other factors were maintained in the trial. But there are numerous occasions, especially in agriculture and animal experiments, where the main interest of an investigator does not lie with the effect of a single factor at a time but lies with simultaneous influence of many factors. For example, the interest of an investigator may not be in merely knowing the effect of spacing on the yield of a certain crop, but his interest would lie in finding out the simultaneous effect of both spacing and method of fertilizer application, that is, whether along with spacing, split dose of fertilizer at periodical intervals would be more beneficial than applying full recommended dose at one time. In order to answer this and many other questions, there are some special experiments called factorial experiments.

Introduction

It is considered to be one of the most ancient machine tools, having evolved from the early tree lathe, which was a new mechanism for turning and milling items held between two nearby trees at the time. The job rotated sporadically due to a rope wound around the work, with one end linked to a flexible limb of a tree and the other end being pulled by a worker. Then hand tools were employed.

The machine was given the name “lathe” when a strip of wood called “lath” was used to support the rope during its construction. This technology evolved over centuries, and in 1797, an Englishman named Henry Maudslay invented the first screw-cutting lathe, which is the ancestor of today’s high-speed, heavy-duty production lathe.
