ABSTRACT

Techniques could be standardized for the induction, initiation, maturation and germination of somatic embryoids from the nucellar tissue isolated from 30-45 day old fruits of mono embryonic mango variety Neelum and poly embryonic variety Vellari Manga. The treatment half strength Murashige and Skoog basal medium containing 2,4-D 5.0 mgl^-1, GA3 5.0 mgl^-1, glutamine 400 mgl^-1, coconut water 200 mll^-1, activated charcoal 500 mgl^-1, sucrose 60 gl^-1and agar gl^-1was found to be the best in induction of embryogenic callus. The treatment 2,4-D 4.0 mgl^-1 + BA 1.0 mgl^-1+ GA3 5.0 mgl^-1in half strength MS basal medium supplemented with glutamine 400 mgl^-1, casein hydrolysate 500 mgl^-1, sucrose 60.0 gl^-1, coconut water 200 mll^-1and agar 6.0 gl^-1was the best in initiating somatic embryos from the induced nucellus of the three varieties. In the variety Neelum BA (8.0 and 16.0 mgl^-1) and kinetin (8.0 to 32.0 mgl^-1) were as effective as 2,4-D in inducing somatic embryogenesis. Polyembryonic variety Vellari Manga showed better response to induction treatments than the mono embryonic varieties. B5 major salts with MS minor salts in combination with 40 gl^-1sucrose, 10 gl^-1PVP, 200 mll^-1coconut water, 5.0 mgl^-1 ABA, 100 mgl^-1 casein hydrolysate and 6.0 gl^-1agar were the best suited for the maturation of the somatic embryos. The positive influence of cobalt chloride, casein hydrolysate and coconut water on the germination of embryoids of both mono and poly embryonic mango varieties could be well established. A basal medium consisting of B5 major salts and MS minor salts supported the highest percentage of germination of somatic embryoids in Neelum and Vellari Manga. However, abnormalities in germination were observed in most of the cases. Excellent germination of somatic embryos was observed in a liquid medium consisting of half strength B5 macro salts and full strength MS micro salts and supplemented with GA3 1.0 mgl^-1+ glutamine 400 mgl^-1 + sucrose 30gl^-1.

North Eastern Himalayan Region comprises mostly of seven states viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura (Gill, 2005). This Himalayan Region stands entirely different from the rest of the country not only in language, dress, food habits and festivals but also differs in agricultural practices. Among agricultural practices shifting cultivation locally known as ìJhumî or ìBunî is the most important. According to Ministry of Agriculture, Arunachal Pradesh stands first in the ìJhumî cultivation followed by Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya (Agnihotri, 2003). In Meghalaya, the problem has assumed an epidemic proportion in Gargo hills where tracts of forests are burnt. The farmers of Khasi and Jainta Hills usually practise the ìBunî cultivation.

When dealing with the evaluation of the feeds and calculating the requirements of energy and protein for ruminants, it becomes necessary to inter convert values among different systems and units. Since the accuracy of conversions/equivalents and formulae used for calculating the requirements vary with different systems/constants used, the conversion factors and formulae given here can be used only as guidelines for routine purposes in laboratory or farms in feed formulation.

Crop growth rate (g m^_-2 day^_-1)

Crop Growth Rate is referred to a whole crop, so you need to consider the area of the ground where crop is present. It is measured as mass increase in crop biomass per unit ground area per unit time.
Equation for that is, CGR= W₂-W₁ / t₁-t₂

In nature, microbes are found as a mixed population. The types that encounter the most favourable environmental and other growth conditions emerge in abundance while others that find the environment less favourable are fewer in number. However, for any kind of study on them or for their use as a pure species, they have to be separated from other species. The nutritional media or culture media are different for different species. As the medium is specific for certain species, it checks or restricts the growth of other microbes for which it may not be suitable. However, some growth of and contamination by unwanted species may occur.

Chutney

It is a product prepared by cooking the fruit pulp with added salt, sugar, spices, acetic acid and fruit to a suitable consistency so that it contains TSS not less than 50% and fruit part not less than 40% as per FSSAI specification. Sugar, salt, spices, acetic acid all act as partial preservatives. Preservatives may also be added in chutney for increasing its storability. Generally no artificial colour and flavor are required to be added.

Sauce

Sauce is a product similar to ketchup, prepared from pulps of tomato or other fruit/vegetable, having TSS not less than 15% and cooked to a suitable consistency with added sugar, salt, spices and vinegar. Sugar, salt, spices, acetic acid all act as partial preservatives. According to FSSAI specification fruit sauce should have minimum of 15% TSS and 1.2% acidity. Preservatives and colours may also be added for increasing of appearance and storability.

In meteorology, we often use some of the physical parameters to explain the physical processes taking place in the atmosphere. These parameters must have already appeared in the earlier chapters. However, these are given in this chapter to enable the readers to get acquainted once again.

16.1 Momentum

Momentum is defined as the product of mass and its velocity. In S.I. system units mass is expressed in kilograms and velocity in meters per second.

Momentum = Mass x Velocity

Units for momentum (S.I. system) = kg. m/sec

In C.G.S. System, mass is expressed in grams and velocity in cm/sec.

Abstract

The North-West Himalaya is bestowed with rich genetic diversity of minor temperate fruits representing the genera viz. Malus, Prunus, Pyrus, Rubus, Ribes, Sorbus, Cotoneaster, Myrica, Corylus, Crataegus, Punica, Hippophae, Elaeagnus, Viburnum, Vitis, Ficus, Citrus, Ziziphus, Morus,, Olea, etc. These species are known for their hardiness, adaptability to wastelands and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Apart from their easy availability, they assure some sustained yield and make our diet more diverse. Some indigenous species having potential for diversifying temperate fruit production are Pyrus pyrifolia, Diospyros lotus, Rubus ellipticus , R. lasiocarpus, R.. fruiticosus, Corylus colurna, Citrus pseudolimon, Hippophae rhamnoides and Pinus gerardiana. Some of the exotic temperate fruits viz. pineapple guava (Feijoa sellowiana), Chinese ber (Ziziphus jujuba), Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki), Rubus spp., Ribes spp, quince (Cydonia oblonga), medlar (Mespilus spp.), pecan nut (Carya illinoensis), hazelnut (Corylus avellana), husk tomato (Physalis spp.) and tree tomato (Cyphomendra betacea) have shown good performance at National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources  Regional Station, Shimla.

The DTPA method was originally developed to extract Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn from slightly acidic to alkaline soils (Lindsay and Norvell, 1978), but in some cases it can be used for other metals also such as Nickel (Ni), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb) and Chromium (Cr). Among them Ni is considered as an essential micronutrient. The DTPA is used to extract soil metals by forming chelates with free metals in solution, which lowers their ionic activities so that additional quantities of metal are released from the soil until equilibrium is attained. Triehanolamine (TEA) is used to buffer the extracting solution at pH 7.3 in an attempt to optimize the extraction of various metals. Calcium chloride is included in the extracting solution to minimize dissolution of CaCO₃.

Introduction

The method of obtaining the data for each and every unit belonging to the population or universe, which is the aggregate of all units of a given type under consideration, is known as complete enumeration survey or complete census. Examples of units are family, a period of time such as an hour, day, fishing village, fishing household, fishing establishment, fishing boat, fish landing centres etc. The type of unit to be considered would depend on the purpose of the view. The population may be finite or infinite. It is obvious that for any statistical investigation complete enumeration of the population is rather impracticable. For example, if we want to have an idea of the total catch of fish (monthly) in India, we will have to enumerate all the fishers who catch fish in the country, which is rather a very difficult task. If the population is infinite, complete enumeration is not possible. In addition, if the units are destroyed in the course of inspection, 100% inspection though possible, is not at all desirable. However, even if the population is finite or the inspection is not destructive, complete enumeration is not taken because it is time-consuming, expensive, and as well as it needs a large amount of resources in terms of trained personnel.

Introduction

A careful compilation and scrutiny of data of aquaculture variables is essential for appropriate statistical analysis and meaningful statistical inference and interpretation of results. In nature, many aquaculture variables are inter-related with each other and the changes in variables would often depend on different variables which are either correlated or independent. In some cases, the variables could also be intra-related over a period of time. For statistical analysis of data of aquaculture variables comprising of different physical growth variables like fish weight, body mass, length and bio-chemical growth variables like muscle protein, lipid, glycogen, protease etc. and variables like pond size, water and its quality, the environmental parameters, type of feed, chemicals used etc., appropriate statistical procedures of correlation and regression could be explored for statistical analysis, testing and interpretation of results. Abstract

The Sonadi is an important breed of sheep in southern Rajasthan. Three districts namely Udaipur, Rajsamand and Chittorgarh were selected from major and Bhilwara from minor breeding tract for complete enumeration. Finally 450 shepherds were selected to collect the information with respect to demographical and geographical distribution as well as management practices. Among selected tehsils, two tehsils from each district were chosen for breed characterization. In all 6979 sheep from 147 shepherds of 49 villages in 8 tehsils were registered for breed characterization.

Sonograms of animals suffering from different diseases are presented along with other investigations as case studies to provide a comprehensive picture of the disease.
