Statistical tools are used in all branch of agriculture. It is mainly used for efficient planning of experiments and for interpreting experimental data. A good researcher should be aware of statistical techniques, which helps not only summarization of data but also interpretation of data.

10.1. Parameters Used in Statistics

Population

The aggregate or totality of all possible objects possessing the specified characteristic is called a population. Thus, a population may consist of all plants in a plot or field.

Sample

A portion of the population is known as sample. For statistical inferences about a population from a sample, it is essential that the samples are representative of the population.

Statistics: Collection of methods for planning experiments, obtaining data, and then organizing, summarizing, presenting, analyzing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions.

Statistics

Statistics may be defined as the mathematical analysis, based on the theory of probability, of experimental data in an attempt to summarize or to describe them so that conclusions can be drawn with respect to the phenomena that supply the data. It is the branch of mathematics concerned with collection, classification, analysis, and interpretation of numerical facts, for drawing inferences on the basis of their quantifiable likelihood (probability). Statistics can interpret aggregates of data too large to be intelligible by ordinary observation because such data (unlike individual quantities) tend to behave in regular, predictable manner. It is subdivided into descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Statistics is also defined as a discipline that allows researchers to evaluate conclusions derived from sample data. Plural of statistic is also statistics. In practice, statistics refers to a scientific approach used to:

1. Introduction

Biological systematics (biosystematics) deals with the grouping of biological organisms in discrete taxonomic units based on their character states. These character states are determined through morphological, anatomical, ecological, biochemical and molecular biological analyses of specific parameters. If these character states are converted into numerical parameters, we can apply several statistical and numerical methods to achieve appropriate biosystematic inferences. In fact this particular application of statistical and numerical methods has given rise to what we may describe as Numerical Taxonomy, a concept first developed by Robert R. Sokal and Peter H. A. Sneath nearly a half century ago. In recent years the application of numerical methods to taxonomy has received a great deal of attention with the development of the computer and computer technology to the extent that even classical taxonomists are now resorting to the use of such numerical taxonomy methods with the help of computers. In this article the various methods commonly used, their application and specific limitations or otherwise are discussed in the context of their usefulness for classification and taxonomic disposition of the plants.

8.1 Introduction

The knowledge of statistics and probability is very helpful for correct prediction of hydrological data and correct prediction of hydrological data is useful in giving good performance in all water resources projects. Since hydrological data are highly stochastic varying both in space and time, it is essential to predict them as correct as possible. The hydrologic evens do not depend on physical and chemical laws but depend entirely on nature. They cannot be predicted exactly by using any relationship but can be predicted at different probability levels by fitting suitable probability distribution functions. Application of statistics and probability in the field of hydrology can help to predict the hydrologic events in a better way. In hydrology, objectives of statistics are as follows (Suresh, 2008):

Rainfall, runoff, evaporation, and other hydrological variables exhibit considerable natural uncertainty and therefore cannot be treated as entirely deterministic phenomena. Statistical and probability methods make it possible to organize observations, describe their variability, identify relationships, estimate extreme events, and predict values associated with selected probabilities. Hydrological data may be analysed daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally, or annually and expressed through averages, maxima, minima, dispersion, skewness, and frequency. This chapter introduces statistical terminology, correlation, regression, probability distributions, plotting positions, goodness-of-fit tests, model-evaluation tools, reliability, standard error, and risk analysis. These techniques are essential for flood-frequency analysis, planning, and hydraulic design.

Introduction to Statistics

The word statistics has been derived from Latin word “status”, the German word “statistik”, the Italian word “statistica” or the French word “statistique”. During early periods, it was used by emperors and kings only for collecting the information about state and other information which was needed about their people, their number, land, status of people, revenue of the state etc. Gradually, it meaning and uses extended and there onwards its nature changed.

Some scientist/ researchers were given definition of statistics as per time and place.

• An ancient date, A.L. Bowley gives some definitions according their use and place. He seems to be inadequate because these do not include all aspects of statistics. As per time, place or requirement, he gave three definitions of statistics:

• Statistics may be called the science of counting

• Statistics may rightly be called the science of average

• Statistics as the science of counting and average

Abstract

This study was aimed to document the Dawro people’s ethnobotanical knowledge, identify Non-Cultivated Food Plants (NCFPs) and associated challenges to their consumption. Semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, market survey and field observations were conducted to gather the ethnobotanical data. The study documented a total of 47 non-cultivated food plant species belonging to 44 genera and 34 families. Shrubs (36.7%) and herbs (32. 7%) make up the highest proportion of these plants. The two most frequently used parts were fruits (62%) and leaves (18.4%).Over 70% of the species analyzed have additional uses, primarily for medicine, construction, and firewood. Most (68%) of the recorded species are consumed fresh without further processing and they are mainly fruits. The study found that non-cultivated food plants play a vital role to the Dawro people during food shortages.

Introduction

The global aquaculture production in 2020 was recorded at 122.6 million tonnes, aquatic animals contributing 87.5 million tonnes and algae 35.1 million tonnes, with a total value of USD 281.5 billion. About one-third of this production comes from farming of the marine species. Asian countries dominated the world aquaculture by producing 91.6 % of the total (FAO, 2022). With 14.16 million metric tonnes production in 2019-20, India is the world’s second-largest aquaculture producer next to China, accounting for 7.56 % of global production. It contributes about 1.24 % to the country’s GVA and over 7.28 % to the agricultural GVA. During 2019-20, India has exported 12.89 lakh metric tons of fisheries products valued at Rs.46, 662/- crores (USD 6.68 billion). The major farmed species in India are the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and Indian Major Carps (IMC). While issues related to freshwater scarcity and pollution will slow the growth of freshwater aquaculture in coming years, mariculture has been identified as an area of high growth opportunity.

Globally, an estimated two billion people suffer from micronutrient malnutrition and one billion calorie deficient. Thus, providing adequate nutrition to the growing population is a global challenge. Fish currently provides 17% of the world’s animal protein, and exceeds 50% in the diets of many least-developed countries (FAO, 2022). One of the most documented nutritional benefits of seafood is the health benefits of unsaturated fatty acids in marine fish and their contribution to brain development, metabolic function, and the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Seafood also provides essential micronutrients that promote support growth and development, especially in children and pregnant women (FAO, 2022). The proportion of fish eating people in India has been grown from 27.7% in 1987-88 to 50 % in 2015-16. The annual per capita consumption of fish for the entire population was estimated at 5-6 kg, whereas for fish eating population it was found to be 8-9 kg (Shyam, 2016). Assessment of the present trend shows that to meet the increasing demands from the domestic consumers and to cater to the export market, fish production has to come mostly from marine sector only. It is therefore considered that mariculture is the only option for production enhancement from marine sector.

India is an agricultural economy and the agriculture sector contributes 18.40 per cent to the Indian Gross Domestic Product (National Accounts Statistics, 2020-21). It is considered to be a major sector for its contribution to the Indian GDP. Agriculture is the source of income for 65 per cent population of the country. This sector is becoming innately insecure due to several reasons such as production, lack of financial resources, climate conditions and personal attitude of the young generation towards agriculture. The culture of colored and attractive fish in glass aquariums for aesthetic use is called ornamental fish culture. The beautiful, tiny fishes or ornamental fishes are peaceful in nature and suitable for keeping in captivity. These lovely fishes are usually kept in a glass made aquarium and decorated with toys, plants, ceramic structures etc. for beautification. It displays the attractive fish that live in a natural environment decorated with accessories while maintaining environmental parameters in tanks/aquariums by using aerators, heaters, filters, lights to control water movement, temperature, suspended organic matter, illumination etc. besides feeding. Keeping ornamental fish in a glass tank is a very old and popular hobby. More and more people are getting attracted to this hobby and due to growing interest in aquarium keeping; it has resulted in a steady expansion in its trade in more than 125 countries. Household aquariums are more popular; therefore, less than 1% of the global market for ornamental fishes belongs to the public aquaria sector. Most of the ornamental fish is available from developing countries in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. The international trade in ornamental fish breeding and culture provides employment opportunities for thousands of rural people in developing countries. Ornamental fish is becoming an important component in Indian fisheries too, along with food fishes, for both income and employment generation. As a result of advancements in breeding, transport and rearing technology, more and more fish species are being recognized as ornamental fish almost every year. The ornamental fishery is recognized by many developing countries for employment generation and livelihoods. Ecologically suitable culture systems must be developed by evolving micro, small and medium enterprises for sustainable growth.

ICTs are emerging as very important tools for agricultural extension and it is now essential for every extension worker to have working knowledge of ICT tools and devices like computers, internet, mobile phone, kisan call center, information kiosks, e-mails, expert systems, touch screen systems, mobile telephony and World Wide Web. Keeping in mind wide scope of ICT application in agriculture, the entire study entitled “Status and prospects of ICT application in agriculture through extension functionaries” was undertaken with following specific objectives.

Horticulture is the science of cultivation, management, postharvest handling, value addition and marketing of fruits, vegetables, ornamental, aromatic and medicinal plants, spices and plantation crops.
