India is a second largest producer of fruits and vegetables after China. These share are 10% and 16% respectively in total world production. Horticulture crops occupy 23.548 million ha and production is estimated around 260.063 million tones. Total area of fruits, vegetable, plantation crops, spices, loose flower and aromatic plant are 7012, 9083, 3606, 3092, 218 and 537 thousand ha, respectively and production are 79400, 156445, 16388, 5786, 1421 and 622 thousand tones, respectively with productivity are11.32, 17.22, 4.54, 1.87, 6.59, 1.19 thousand tones per ha, respectively (2012-2013). The total productions of cut flowers are 74305 Lakh stem (2012-2013). The annual horticulture export volume is 2733145 metric tonnes (2010-2011) with total exported value of Rs 696461 lakh. In terms of volume, fresh fruits & vegetables comprised about 76 % of exported horticulture produce followed by processed fruits & vegetables (23 %) and floriculture & seeds (1%). After that losses found 20-30 % in fruit and 30-40 % in vegetable while harvesting to consumption in India. It’s due to the perishable nature of horticulture commodity, non availability of appropriate post harvest infrastructure transportation, inadequacy of the market or lack of processing.

India is a major horticulture producer, even though processing is less than 2 %. This is very low as compare to 80 % of Malaysia, 78 % of Philippine, 70 % of Brazil and 30 % of Thailand. The most of developed country 40-60 % fruits and vegetables utilize in processing.

Proper handling, packaging, transportation and storage reduce the post harvest losses of fruits and vegetables. For every one percent reduction in loss will save 5 million tons of fruit and vegetable per year. Processing and preservation technology helps to save excess fruit and vegetable during the glut season. The technology has become a necessity to improve the food safety and strengthen nations food security. The technology helps to boost export of agricultural commodities in the form of preserved and value added products.

Soil organic matter (SOM) is one of the most complex materials existing in nature. Besides the organic constituents in undecayed plant and animal tissues, SOM contains both living and dead microbial cells, microbially synthesized compounds and an unending array of derivatives of these materials produced as the result of microbial activity. Soil organic matter contains most of the naturally occurring organic compounds. Some components of SOM are undoubtedly unique to the soil environment, particularly those involving inorganic-organic complexes.

Hypersensitivity is an altered reaction to a specific antigen that results in pathologic reactions upon the exposure of a sensitized host to that of specific antigen.

Explanation

Hypersensitivity reactions are inappropriate or misdirected responses to a specific antigen that result in harmful reactions upon exposure of a sensitized host to that specific antigen.

Affected animals require a sensitization phase in which the animal must have had either a previous exposure or a prolonged exposure to the antigen so that it can develop an immune response to the inciting antigen.

The harmful effects resulting from hypersensitivity reactions occur in the effector phase and are most commonly manifested through inflammation or cell lysis.

16.1 Process of Ripening of Worms
Closer to the end of the fifth stage, the silkworm stops ingesting and turns into the so-called mature larva and starts spinning the cocoon. Properly reared worms, when ripe, will attempt to spin true cocoons even below incorrect conditions. It may be interpreted that extent of physiological disturbances that occurred in the early stages and the extend of recovery mechanism that operated subsequently may be the major cause for this; not withstanding the haplontic and diplontic selection that operated in the biological system. Further the type of physiological disturbances happened, whether the enzyme systems affected or a substantial amount of toxic substances produced besides the genetical causes have not been studied in the present investigation. Moreover if the reduced growth was due to mitotic arrest in the meristamatic regions of the roots of M₁ plants, the disorder may not be completely inherited to its offspring’s (M₂ plants), in that sense selection at the cell level damages might occur in the M₁ itself and the selection for a cell with normal mitosis and extent of chromosomal damages that will be tolerated alone might be selected and hence the effect in M₁ need not be always related with M₂; it also depends upon the potency of the cell to recover from the mutagen induced damages. The ability of the cell in general, should be more in M₁ than in M₂ recover the disorder after several cell generations.

Youth denotes-”Young, Original, Unique, Talented, and Hopeful”. Youths represent the most active segment of the population and the engine that do most productive work of the society (Adesope, 1996). Youths are a formidable force in the agricultural production, process, constituting a sizeable proportion of future progressive farmers and better citizens, especially in the rural areas. Fifty percent of Indian population has average age group 25 and more than 65 percent below the age of 35 years therefore United Nations (2005) defines youth as ‘all individuals aged between 15 and 24 year’ and declared 2014 as the “International Year of Family Farming”. Family farming is a means of organizing agricultural, forestry, fisheries, pastoral and aquaculture production which is managed and operated by a family and predominantly reliant on family labour, including both of women and men.

The papaya (Carica papaya L.) belongs to the family Caricaceae. It is an important fruit of tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It is the most important plant in the home gardens, and where green papaya is also used as a vegetable. Ripe fruits are eaten as dessert, which is available throughout the year.

Papaya is native to West Indies and Central America (Mexico). It is a common fruit in nearly all parts of tropical and sub-tropical world. It is abundantly grown in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South America, Pakistan, Australia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Kenya, Taiwan, Puerto Rica, Peru, USA, Philippines. It was introduced in India in 16^th Century. In India it is mainly cultivated in Kerala, Assam, Bihar Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Cultivars: Honey Dew, Coorg Honey Dew, Washingtan, Pusa Delicious, Pusa Majesty, Pusa Dwarf, Pusa Giant, Co. 1 to Co. 7, Arka Surya, Arka Prabhat, Pusa Nanha, Pink Flesh Sweet, Pant 1, Sunrise Solo and Taiwan Red Lady, are the most popular varieties under cultivation in India.

The Carbon Cycle

The element that serves as a corner stone for cell structure is carbon. Plant tissues and microbial cells contain approximately 40 to 50% of C on dry weight basis. Yet, the ultimate source is the CO₂ of the atmosphere. The CO₂ is converted into organic C by the action of photoautotrophic organisms (higher plants and green algae). It has been estimated that the vegetation on earth’s surface consume some 1.3 x 10¹⁴ kg of CO₂ per annum which is about V₂₀ of the total CO₂ supply of the atmosphere or ¹/₁₀₀₀ of that in the ocean. Soil carbon constitutes the largest terrestrial pool of carbon.

Biofertilizers improve the plant growth due to changes in the microbial community of rhizosphere by production of several substances. Normally, biofertilizers promote plant growth either by facilitating nutrient absorption or by secretion of plant hormones. Biofertilizers also cause inhibitory effects by acting as biocontrol agents on various pathogens so that the growth of plant is enhanced. The mode of action could be either direct or indirect methods

Carambola is a good source of vitamin A, B, and C, minerals, especially Fe, K, Mg and P. The composition of fruit is 75 to 80% pulp, 5 to 7% total soluble solids, 9.4% carbohydrates, 0.4% protein, 0.5 to 1.0% acidity, 0.9% fibre, 570 to 700 IU of vitamin A and 0.3 to 0.5% minerals. It is used as a dessert fruit or for preparing juice, jam, jelly and pickles. It has medicinal value also. Ground leaves and shoots for chicken pox, root extract as an antidote for poisoning and pulp of immature fruits for cleaning brassware. It is used as an alternative to tamarind in cooking.

Definition

The animal reacts to its own tissue (endogenous antigen) to incite production of antibodies or sensitized lymphocytes. There is breakage of tolerance to the self-proteins.

• Autoimmune diseases are prevented by elimination of sensitized T and B lymphocytes by the process of apoptosis in the thymus and bone marrow during development (Central tolerance; clonal deletion), in the peripheral tissues (Peripheral tolerance) and clonal anergy (Clonal avoidance) by defective presentation of cells.

• The tolerance of CD4+ TH cells is critical in preventing autoimmunity.

• Two major autoimmune diseases are thyroiditis and haemolytic anemia. Other conditions are rare in animals

Nocardia has the ability to form gram-positive, branching filaments of less than 1um in diameter. It is closely related to Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium and Rhodococcus species
History Nocard described this organism in 1888, following its isolation from a case of bovine ‘farcy’, hence the name of the type species: Nocardia farcinica.
Natural Habitat
Nocardia species are soil borne saprophytes
Morphology
They are gram-positive, obligate aerobes ability to form branching filaments. Some produce true mycelia and some strains are acid-fast. All species are nonmotile. Gram stained smears from lesions revealed gram-positive branching filaments that often show fragmentation into coccobacillary elements. The modified ZN stained smears exhibit a similar morphology but most of the filaments retain the carbol-fuchsin dye and stain red.
Cultural Characters
The Nocardia species grow very well in blood agar incubated aerobically at 370C for upto 7 days. Inoculate the suspected colonies from blood agar into Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) and incubated at 370C for upto 10 days.

9.1. Production
Production means creation of value in the goods, i. e. creation of utility. Production activity helps in transforming a set of inputs into goods and services. It essentially means transforming of one set of goods into another. The output generated from production possesses greater utility than the combined inputs used in the production process. The inputs that are utilized in production of goods may be provided by the nature and/ or by other industries.
9.2. Factors of Production
These mean the production resources required to produce a given product. Fraser defined factor of production as “a group or class of original productive resources”. The factors of production have been traditionally classified as land, labour, capital and organization.
Land
According to Marshall, land means “the materials and forces which nature gives freely for man’s aid, in land and water, in air and light and heat.” In Economics the term land has a very broad meaning. It includes all free gifts of nature available to mankind viz., air, water and land. It includes all types of land surfaces such as mountains, valley, plains, forests etc. It includes all types of water resources such as rivers, oceans, etc. Thus the concept of land includes all natural resources on, above and below the earth’s surface.

Crop density is nothing but number of plants or seedling per unit area. Crop density per unit area depends on the soil, climate and type of crop being planted. For example under extreme conditions, in poor soils and in semiarid regions with no irrigation planting at low density is best. Otherwise crop plants will be thin and weak. In such conditions not only produces low yield but also is the ideal condition for pest and diseases. Crop unit area depends on :

1. Soil fertility: In poor soils, plant density should be lower than in fertile soils.
2. Availability of water: In areas where water is a limiting factor, planting should be done at a lower density.
3. Tillering capacity of the crop: Small grains and other cereals are planted at lower densities due to tillering capacity and elasticity of the crops.
