Introduction

The Indian hot arid zone occupies an area of 0.32 million km to forming a continuous stretch in the north western states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana and scattered land masses in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, 70 per cent of it falls in western Rajasthan. Low and erratic rainfall, extreme temperatures, long sunshine duration (6.6-10 hours), low relative humidity (30-80 per cent), high wind velocity (9-13 km/h) and high evapo transpiration (1600-1800 mm) and characteristic features of the region. Moreover the soils are poor in nutrients and scarcity of water and recurring droughts are perennial constraints. Despite hostile conditions, the western arid Rajasthan supports a large human and livestock population and a variety of flora and fauna. However, the ever increasing human and livestock population and development activities exert enormous pressure on the natural resource in the region. These areas experience an annual rainfall between 100 and 500 mm with a coefficient of variation varying from 40 to 70%. The region is characterized by low and erratic rainfall with extremes of temperature (1–48 °C), high wind velocity and sandy soils. In dry and arid region, wind erosion affects 13.5% in India (Sehgal et al., 1994, Kar et al.,1959). Wind erosion is very active in the Indian Thar Desert and poses severe multifaceted problems (Dey et al., 2016). Loss of nutrient-rich particles from agricultural fields has been occurring due to suspension of fine particles in air and deposition of eroded soil. Among terrain properties, soil aggregate distribution, surface roughness, soil moisture and vegetation cover are important factors influencing wind erosion. Indiscriminate grazing in the region also further destroys vegetation and exposes the land surface, thus making it more vulnerable to wind erosion.

4.1 Introduction

Many important traits such as yield, quality and some forms of disease resistance are controlled by many genes and are known as quantitative traits or characters (also called ‘metric’,‘polygenic,’ ‘multifactorial’ or ‘complex’ traits). The regions within genomes that contain genes associated with a particular quantitative trait are known as quantitative trait loci (QTLs). The identification of QTLs based only on conventional phenotypic evaluation is not possible. A major breakthrough in the characterization of quantitative traits that created opportunities to select for QTLs was initiated by the development of DNA (also called molecular) markers in the 1980s.

One of the main uses of DNA markers in agri-horticultural research has been in the construction of linkage maps for diverse crop species. Linkage maps have been utilised for identifying chromosomal regions that contain genes controlling simple traits (controlled by a single gene) and quantitative traits using QTL analysis. The process of constructing linkage maps and conducting QTL analysis–to identify genomic regions associated with traits–is known as QTL mapping (also called ‘genetic,’ ‘gene’ or ‘genome’ mapping). DNA markers that are tightly linked to agronomically important genes (called gene ‘tagging’) may be used as molecular tools for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in plant breeding. MAS involves using the presence/absence of a marker as a substitute for or to assist in phenotypic selection, in a way which may make it more efficient, effective, reliable and cost-effective compared to the more conventional plant breeding methods. The use of DNA markers in plant (and animal) breeding has opened a new realm in agriculture and horticulture called ‘molecular breeding’.

This guidance explains when a botanical drug may be marketed under an over-the-counter (OTC) drug monograph and when FDA approval of a new drug application (NDA) is needed. In addition, this document provides guidance to sponsors on submitting investigational new drug applications (INDs) for botanical drug products, including those botanical products (or botanicals) currently lawfully marketed as foods and dietary supplements in the United States. This guidance also discusses several areas in which, because of the unique nature of botanicals, FDA finds it appropriate to apply regulatory policies that differ from those applied to synthetic, semisynthetic, or otherwise highly purified or chemically modified drugs (including antibiotics). In particular, the guidance states that applicants may submit reduced documentation of preclinical safety and of chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) to support an IND for initial clinical studies of botanicals that have been legally marketed in the United States as dietary supplements or cosmetics without any known safety concerns.

A ratio is the comparison or simplified form of two quantities of the same kind. This relation indicates how many times one quantity is equal to the other; or in other words, ratio is a number, which expresses one quantity as a fraction of the other. For example, the ratio of 1 to 2 is 1 : 2. The numbers forming the ratio are called terms.     •    The heavy metals (HM) or trace metals in an aquatic environment can come from natural (e.g. geological minerals, wind blown silicate dust, volcanic emissions, sea spray and combustion) and anthropogenic sources (e.g. mining, industry and sewage treatment discharges as well as electronic waste and agriculture fertilisers). In aquatic systems, the heavy metals of greatest concerns are cadmium, copper, lead, mercury and zinc.
    •    Metals may exist in a number of physico-chemical states in aqueous systems such as particulate matter and dissolved forms. Metal speciation in freshwater is strongly influenced by hardness, alkalinity, pH, natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) and redox potential. 
    •    Water hardness is quantitatively related to metal toxicity in freshwater (i.e. toxicity of heavy metals decrease with increasing hardness and alkalinity; on the other hand, toxicity increases with decreasing salinity, dissolved organic matter and chelators). The uptake and toxicity of heavy metals of most metals in marine waters is low as compared to freshwater because metals are easily complexed with chloride ions.
    •    The toxicity of HMs is related to the dissolved ionic form of the metal rather than total concentration of the metal. Each different physico-chemical forms of an element has a different toxicity, for example, if the element (e.g. Cu) is absorbed on a colloidal particles it is expected to be of little or no effect on aquatic organisms, however,  if the copper is available as free Cu (II) ion, few aquatic organisms may survive.

Suppose you go to a Big Bazar to buy a shirt. You finalize the shirt and are shocked to see its price tag. The price mentioned on the sweatshirt is Rs. 2500. You ask the owner to give some discount. He offers a discount of 20%. Now just figure out, how much you will pay to the shopkeeper. Did you say 2000 rupees? You are bang on1 You will pay a sum after subtracting 20% of amount written on price tag i.e. Rs. 500 from Rs. 2500. You finally pay the shopkeeper 2500 – 500 = Rs. 2000. This example introduces you to the concept of marked price and discount. What you indirectly learned from this case is that the discount is calculated on the marked price only. Now let us assume here that the shopkeeper has purchased that sweatshirt for Rs.1600. How much money that shopkeeper has earned by selling this sweatshirt ? Now the shopkeeper has invested Rs. 1600 to buy this sweatshirt and finally sells for Rs. 2000. He makes a profit of Rs. 2000 – 1600 = Rs. 400

He earns this profit by putting in Rs. 1600. Thus his percentage profit is 100 x 400/1600 = 25%. This makes another concept of cost price and profit clear to you i.e. the price you put in from your pocket to buy a product is called cost price and the extra amount you get after selling the product is called the profit. The profit and loss percentage is calculated on cost price. Profit and loss problems are an integral part of all the competitive exams. This chapter focuses on the fundamental ways in which meteorological elements directly influence plant growth, development, and ultimately, agricultural productivity. 2.2 Effect of Weather Parameters on Crops The effect of different weather parameters on crops is given below.

Small millets such as foxtail millet, proso millet, finger millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, fonio millet, teff and little millet and pseudo cereals such as buckwheat,quinoa, amaranth and cockscomb and chia are the oldest crops and staple food for millions of people around the world. Small millets and pseudo cereals are the main source of fodder and feed material for livestock.

Downstream and Upstream Motion

Downstream motion of a boat is its motion in the same direction as the flow of the river. Upstream motion is exactly the opposite. There are two parameters in these problems.

Words like rDNA (recombinant DNA) technology, cloning, genetically modified organism (GMO), living modified organism (LMO) and transgenics are of today’s common knowledge. However rather than scientific interest, debates on biosafety issues have made these terms more agnized among general people. Global, sectorial and individual protests against transgenic plants and animals are enunciated allover the world raising issues and concerns over risks and health hazards of using these organisms. Despite these protests and concerns, commercial use of transgenic organism as food, feed or other purposes are increasing at an exponential rate. Although there is not much scientific evidence where transgenics have caused havocs on ecological balance or human health, the biosafety issues need to be solved to provide a safer environment rather than be sorry and lament in the future for today’s mistakes. One of the major problems in supporting use of GMOs lies in the incapability of biosafety science to draw reliable and widely acceptable conclusions for labeling a safe tag on these organisms and their derivatives.

Biological pigments, also known simply as pigments or biochromes are substances produced by living organisms that have a colour resulting from selective colour absorption. Biological pigments include plant pigments and flower pigments. Many biological structures, such as skin, eyes, fur and hair contain pigments such as melanin in specialized cells called chromatophores.

Pigment colour differs from structural colour in that it is the same for all viewing angles, whereas structural colour is the result of selective reflection or iridescence, usually because of multilayer structures. For example, butterfly wings typically contain structural colour, although many butterflies have cells that contain pigment as well.

Basic Requirements

Hybrid seeds could be produced at cheap rates only if the crop species have certain built-in morphological or physiological mechanisms, suitable for the control of parentage for successful hybrid seed production and its floral morphology, is amenable to it. Some of the basic requirements and techniques employed in large-scale commercial hybrid seed production of crop plants are as follows:

• Availability of a proven heterotic hybrid combinations which could distinctly and profitably surpass the yield levels of commercial variety being grown.
• Availability of an easy, economic and effective means of eliminating or rendering functionless of male part of bisexual seed parent, mechanically, genetically or even biochemically.
• Availability of a strong fertility restoration system (in case of the use of cytoplasmically governed male sterility system) or availability of a tightly linked marker gene system in genetically governed male sterility along with full and detectable expression of self-incompatibility.
• Absence of modifier genes or gene systems in case of the use of self-incompatibility for hybrid seed production.
• Complete synchronization of flowering in both seed and pollen parents.
• Free, unrestricted and natural transfer of pollen from pollen to seed parents.
• Good seed setting on seed parent.
• A skilled organized effort for large-scale seed production, certification, processing and well-knitted distribution of hybrid seeds.

Abstract

Cyanobacteria have gained a lot of attention in recent years because of their novel applications in biotechnology, besides their well recognized role as inoculants for rice crop. They represent favourite model organisms for a deeper understanding of several plant and microbial metabolic processes and efficient systems for the production of recombinant compounds of pharmaceutical and commercial value. They have been identified as a rich source of biologically active compounds with antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and anticancer activities, which illustrate their potential as biocontrol agents. The genus Anabaena assumes significance not only as a diazotroph, but also as a rich source of pharmacologically active and structurally interesting secondary metabolites with diverse applications in agriculture and industry. The present compilation aims to present an overview of the literature available globally, and studies undertaken in India illustrating the diversity and potential of Anabaena strains, besides their significance in biology and evolution.
