The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution in world food trade every year. In India, food processing is gaining importance as now it is being considered as profit industry. The increased demand for processed food in the domestic market and Indian foods getting popularized in the global market has put food processing industry on high priority list by the entrepreneurs. Accounting for about 32 percent of the country’s total food market, the food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption and export. The total food production in India is likely to double in the next ten years with the country’s domestic food market estimated to reach US$ 258 billion by 2015. The food industry in India has been attracting a lot of attention from foreign investors in the area of processing, development of infrastructure for storage and transportation and retail marketing and scenario is changing rapidly.

There are reports in financial newspapers that the ongoing (2010) drought affecting nearly 200 districts in the country may not have much effect on GDP, since the farmers in the drought-affected areas contribute hardly 3 per cent to GDP.  It is sad that such a measure of the impact of drought on the lives and livelihoods of millions of rural families is even considered. It is this mindset, typical of the growing insensitivity to human suffering in our country, that is responsible for India being the home for the largest number of undernourished and malnourished children, women and men in the world.  No wonder we are finding it difficult to achieve the first among the UN Millennium Development Goals, namely, reducing hunger and poverty by half by 2015.  Unless we realise that agriculture in India is not just a food- producing machine, but is the backbone of the livelihood of over 60 per cent of our population, rural deprivation and suffering will not only continue to persist, but will get worse, leading to severe social unrest.

Bananas and plantains constitute the fourth most important global food commodity (after rice, wheat and maize). They are cultivated in over 120 countries in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world in an area of  approximately 100 million hectares, where they constitute a major staple food crop for millions of people, as well as providing a valued source of income through local and international trade.
 
Banana is one of the oldest fruit crops of India, finding its reference even in epics like Ramayana. India is  believed to be one of centres of  origin, besides southeast Asian countries like Burma, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. It is a crop having multifarious uses as every part of the plant is utilized and hence aptly  called as ‘Kalpatharu’ the plant of virtues. It is important internationally from the point of view of  trade as well as livelihood security.

Crop physiology is the study of the ways in which plant physiological processes are integrated to cause whole plant responses in communities. The subject matter of crop physiology includes the ways in which the knowledge of plant physiology is applied for better management of crops.

Genetic potential of a plant and its interaction with environmental factors decides its growth and development by influencing or modifying certain internal processes. Plant physiology studies about these internal processes and their functional aspects. It helps to understand various biological processes of the plants like photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, translocation, nutrient uptake, plant growth regulation through hormones and such other processes which have profound impact on crop yield. Many aspects of Agriculture can benefit from more intensive research in plant physiology to provide practical solutions in agriculture. Understanding the physiological aspects of seed germination, seedling growth, crop establishment, vegetative development, flowering, fruit and seed setting and crop maturity provides a reasonable scientific base for effective monitoring and beneficial manipulation of these phenomenon’s. Studying this phenomenon with a view to develop better crop management practices forms the subject matter of crop physiology. Later on several research works were carried out to understand the processes like translocation of food materials, their partitioning towards economic yield, storage mechanisms, physiology of flowering, effect of stressful environmental factors on crop growth and development, role of plant growth regulators in increasing the crop productivity etc. All these areas have enriched the knowledge of physiological processes and their role in deciding the crop yield. Crop physiology covers different topics such as seed germination and proper establishment of seedling depends upon various internal and external factors. Knowledge in seed physiology helps in understanding of different physiological and morphological changes that occur during germination. Any deviation in these processes causes seed dormancy. The dormant condition of the seed, bars immediate use of harvested seed for next crop which is important in intensive agriculture. By understanding the causes and effects of this problem, crop physiologists have come up with different methods of breaking the seed dormancy. Nutriophysiology is yet another important area to understand crop physiology. For the healthy growth of a crop, around 16 essential elements are required. Knowledge of nutriophysiology has helped in identification of essential nutrients, ion uptake mechanisms, their deficiency symptoms and corrective measures. It also helps to check the toxicity symptoms of various nutrients.

Kewda plants are hardly attacked by the insect pests and diseases. However, a few fungal and bacterial diseases are found to reduce the yield of flowers significantly. Some important insect pests and diseases of this plant with their nature of damage and suggested control measures are discussed here as reported by Jagadev et al. (2001).

Pests

1. Bag worm

During the dry season, leaves are found to be attacked by bag worm (Manatha albipes; Fam. Psychidae; order- Lepidoptera) (Plate 36). The larva, a foliage feeder, feeds on the chlorophyll and veins of leaves leaving the mid-rib resulting in perforation of leaves. In case of heavy infestation, the leaves become dry. Extensive damage arrests the vegetative growth resulting in significant reduction of flowering. Thus, the insect is considered to be of economic importance, but till date neither the extent of economic loss caused to the crop nor its control measures have been worked out.

It is a deep acting remedy on every organ and tissue. Its clear-cut characteristic symptoms amid correspondence to many severe types of diseases make its homoeopathic employment constant and certain. Its general symptoms often alone lead to its successful application.

Arsenic should be thought of in ailments from alcoholism, ptomaine poisoning, stings, dissecting wounds, chewing tobacco; ill effects from decayed food or animal matter; order of discharges is putrid: in complaints that return annually. Letting the cow to release its milk so the dairy farmer can extract it for personal use or to sell is the procedure of milking. Consequently, it is not totally a natural process. The natural process must be manipulated by the dairy farmer to his advantage. Therefore, in order to control the natural process, one must first understand it. The process of producing milk from blood-derived basic materials by alveolar cells and storing it in the alveolar cavity is known as milk secretion. Only when the alveolar cavity is full and the pressure on the alveolar cells prevents further secretion does this continuous process come to an end.

Among many factors influencing fruit bud formation, the relative proportion of carbohydrate and nitrogen in a tree appears to be the only factor that could be controlled by an orchardist. When under normal course tree does not flower; special practices such as ringing, girdling, stripping, notching, bending, water stress (with holding irrigation), root pruning and root exposure etc. are performed with the aim to control the translocation of food like carbohydrates, starch and sugars. Accumulation of food in the branches leads to fruit bud formation resulting into fruitfulness. Commercial products from tomatoes include juice, puree and paste. Processing of tomato is now practiced from home scale level to a large scale enterprise. As a semi finished product, tomato puree is prepared on a small scale while at large scale tomato paste has gained commercial significance. Both puree and paste are used for preparation of different finished products like ketchup, juice, soup etc. The method for preparation of these products are well standardized, however, some modification with respect to recipes are made in the processing plants owing to variation in the quality of the raw material. Abelmoschus moschatusMedik., commonly known as ambrette, annual hibiscus, or musk mallow, is a tropical plant species belonging to the Malvaceae family. Native to India, Southeast Asia, and Africa, this herbaceous plant has been cultivated for centuries for its medicinal, culinary, and fragrant properties. It is an annual or biennial plant that grows up to 2 meters in height, with hairy, palmate leaves and showy, yellow flowers with a purple center. The plant's seeds, leaves, and flowers emit a strong, musky fragrance used in perfumery and traditional medicine. Abelmoschus moschatus is a warm-season crop that thrives in tropical and subtropical regions, requiring well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. The plant has been used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, and its leaves and flowers are used as a vegetable and in salads. In contrast, the seeds are used as a spice. The plant's essential oil is also used in perfumes, cosmetics, and aromatherapy products, making it a valuable crop for small-scale farmers, providing income through the sale of seeds, leaves, and essential oil.
Origin and distribution
Abelmoschus moschatus, a tropical plant species, is native to India and widely cultivated in Southern China, Vietnam, Nepal, Tropical Asia, South East Asia, and parts of the Pacific. It is also found in the tropical regions of Africa, Australia, and the Americas.

Jelly is prepared by boiling the fruit with or without the addition of water, straining the extract, and mixing the clear extract with sugar followed by cooking the mixture to a stage at which it will set to a clear gel. The jelly should be transparent, well set, but not too stiff, and have an original flavour of the fruit. It should be attractive in colour and should keep its shape when removed from the mould. As per FSSAI specification, the quantity of fruit and soluble solids in the final product (jelly and marmalade) shall not be less than 45 and 65 per cent (w/w) respectively. Jelly is made from fruit extract while jam is made from fruit pulp, therefore, jelly in contrast to jam is considered to be transparent and clear in appearance. Guava jelly is the most common commercial product.
Jellies: In the preparation of jellies, pectin is the most essential constituent which help in making the gel. Since, pectin is present in the cell walls of fruits as such fruit peel, whole or fruit slices along with a small quantity of water are gently boiled to extract the maximum proportion of pectin solution in the water extract. This water extract is used for the preparation of jelly.

The order Spirochaetales contains two families, Leptospiraceae and Spirochaetaceae. It comprises spiral or helical bacteria (spirochaetes) which share some unique morphological and functional features. Members of the order are motile by means of endoflagella which are located within the periplasm.
The spirochactes are slender, motile, flexuous, unicellular, helically coiled bacteria ranging rrom 0.1 -3.0 μm in width. The outer sheath, the outermost layer of a spirochaete cell, is a multi layered membrane that completely surrounds the peri plasmic flagella (axial filament) and the helical protoplasmic cylinder. The cylinder consists or the nuclear material, cytoplasm, cytoplasmic membraneand the peptidoglycan portion of the cell wall.
The periplasmic flagella are wrapped around the cylinder and are in the peri plasmic space of these Gram-negative bacteria. One end of each flagellum is inserted near a pole of the protoplasmic cylinder and attached by platelike structures called insertion discs. The distal end of each flagellum is not inserted and extends to the centre of the cell and may overlap the flagellum from the opposite end. The periplasmic flagella facilitate the motility of the bacteria in viscid environments.
Leptospira species
Members of this species (leptospires) are motile helical bacteria (0.1 x 6 to 12 μm) with hook-shaped ends. Although cytochemically Gram-negative, they do not stain well with conventional bacteriological dyes and are usually visualized using dark-field microscopy. Silver impregnation and immunological staining techniques are used to demonstrate leptospires in tissues. Leptospirosis, which can affect all domestic animals and humans, ranges in severity from mild infections of the urinary or genital systems to serious systemic disease.

Horticulture is an art and science of growing plants. It is the practice of engaging ailing people in various horticultural activities such as gardening and flower arrangements in order to improve their physical, mental and spiritual health. Research confirms that health benefits escalate manifold when people connect with nature and plants by viewing and/or interacting with them. Major benefits of horticultural therapy includes sensory simulation and mood enhancement, mental relaxation, improvement of memory and concentration and an overall feeling of wellness. Horticulture therapy also helps in cultivating positive emotions and provides a meditative mood. It eases both physical and emotional pains and also improves social skills. It is proven that a simple viewing of a garden benefits a person both physically and mentally.

This practice has been used as therapy for centuries. In 1798, Dr. Benjamin Rush, considered as the “Father of American Psychiatry” documented that gardening has positive effects on mentally ill patients. Following World War, II gardening was used as a form of occupational therapy for war veterans. The concept of using nature to improve human health began to gain credibility in 1970’s. Rachel and Stephen Kaplan (1989) found that natural environments had relaxing and restoration benefits for people. The Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture, a peer-reviewed publication of the American Horticultural Therapy Association, has published authentic research papers since 1986. The American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) serves to promote and advance horticultural therapy as a therapeutic intervention and rehabilitative approach. Degrees and certificate programs in horticultural therapy are offered at several colleges and universities and information is available on AHTA website.

Horticultural therapy is a worldwide practice and recognized as an effective treatment for clients of all ages and abilities. It is being used in several diverse settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centres, youth outreach and recovery programs, nursing homes, senior care facilities, prisons, mental health facilities, schools, botanical gardens etc. The client is engaged in horticultural activities facilitated by some trained therapists to achieve specific and documented goals. AHTA believes that horticultural therapy is an active process that occurs in the context of an established treatment plan where the process itself is considered as the therapeutic activity rather than the end product.

Horticulture therapy is a growing profession in rehabilitation and addiction centers, vocational centers, youth mental health programs, hospitals and nursing homes, and old age homes or senior citizen centers, mental health centers, schools and colleges.
