Botanical description

Cowpea belong to genus Vigna and species unguiculata (L) Walp (Syn V. sinensis Savi) of the family Leguminosae sub family Fabacae.

Floral biology

The flowers of cowpea are hermaphrodite. Self-pollination is effected though with some cross-pollination.

Climate and Soil

Cowpea is a warm season crop, and therefore it can be grown both in spring and in rainy seasons in the plains of India. It cannot tolerate cold weather, heavy rainfall and water logging.

Description

Screw conveyor is one of the equipment used in material handling to convey the material horizontally. The screw conveyor consists of screw blade, screw shaft, coupling, tubular trough, cover, inlet and outlet gates, bearings and drive mechanism. Introduction

Tear resistance testing is often used in the plastic film, paper and textile industries. Tear resistance is measured as a sample's ability to resist tearing. Tear strength is the maximum london the sample divided by the thickness of the material. Typically used for testing of plastic film, plastic sheets and other rubber products. Tear strength is calculated by force (in Newtons) divided by thickness (in millimeters, centimeters, inches, etc.): Tear strength = F/t

A tear is generally uneven and usually unplanned. In cases like a packaged chips, already tear cuts are made following a perforated line so that the effort of tearing is less and the action will most likely produce a straight line.

The speed at which a tear resistance test is conducted can affect the test significantly. Tear transmission resistance is common for acceptance testing with materials such as paper and rubber. Tear resistance in textiles involves the load required to spread a single "rip-tongue" type of tear or the type of tear where the material is initially cut.

Abstract

In order to estimate the irrigation need of the crop, stress degree day index computers from canopy and air temperature could be used. During rabi manon, two varieties (Seeta, Brassica Juncea) and (Benoy, Brassica Camperteris) were grown. The canopy temperature of the crop was measured on 45th, 60th  and 75th  days after sowing and stress degree day (SDDI) was also measured. About 67, 70 and 51 per cent activation between SDDI and dry matter production could be explained at 45, 60 and 75 DAS of the crop growth period. Reflectance by mustard canopy was 940 measured. Late sown crop reflected less radiation with the advancement of growth. Extinction coefficient was also measured and the increase in the value of extinction coefficient upon irrigation showed canopy development and better utilization of increasing radiation by the crop.

The packing methods practiced by nurserymen for transport of nursery plants to distant places in India are neither uniform nor efficient. In different parts of the country, various practices are followed which are claimed to have been evolved by long experience of the local nurserymen. They vary according to nature of the plant, the season and the cheapest packing material available at the time of packing.

In many parts of the country, citrus nurserymen uproot plants, tie them in large bundles (with or without soil), keeping the plant tops exposed to air and roots tightly packed or tied in the gunny cloth. The pomegranate and guava plants prepared by air layering are packed as such if they are not already potted in small pots.

Many nurserymen pack the rooted or newly lifted plants in a ball of sticky clay. The ball of earth is then covered with grass and tied as firmly as possible, thus securing the roots against drying. A number of plants, thus prepared, are filled closely in light locally knit bamboo baskets. The baskets are covered thinly with coconut leaves as protection against injury during railway shipment. Mango grafts in pots are packed in light baskets with some cushion of grass to reduce the impact while loading and unloading the parcels on their long journey by rail and road.

Some nursery men use large baskets, woven out of coconut leaves with limp walls or sides. Plants such as coconut, chikoo, guava, mango are packed tightly in these baskets and shipped by truck or rail. This packing is done irrespective of plant containers such as pot or a ball of earth, with or without grass covering. The plants packed in all such fashions are usually damaged and some of them do not survive, unless care is taken during or after transplanting them in the permanent places. For better success, it should be seen that the roots of grown up plants do not get irreparable injury while removing from the bed or the pot. During transport, loss of water by transpiration should be kept at minimum, while the plants are awaiting dispatch or delivery at the railway platform, precaution should be taken against pilferage or damage by animals.

Description

Bucket elevator is one of the equipments used in the material handling to convey the material vertically. The lab model bucket elevator (Fig.34.1) consists of number of buckets/cups arranged to an endless flat belt. The belt with cups run vertically and cups are placed at a particular interval in the belt. The belt is wrapped over two pulleys, one at the top is called head pulley which receives power from an electrical motor 0.5 hp through suitable power concentration and rotates at required rpm. The belts, cups and pulleys are mounted on a steel frame. The grain from the hopper is reaches to the bottom pulley. The bucket is filled with grains during upward movement and is discharged at the top due to the centrifugal force. An outlet is provided at the top to collect the discharge grain. The capacity depends on the bucket size and seed of operation. For proper discharge of the material, the weight of the material in each cup should be equal to the centrifugal force created due to rotation.

During orthopaedic surgery, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to stop the flow of blood from fractured bone. For this reason, there has been a longstanding interest in haemostatic agent for osseous tissue surgery. Bone –wax, oxidized cellulose, sanguistat, bone dust, marrow paste and combination using polyethylene glycols have been tried for osseous hemostasis, however, bone wax appears to be the most promising bone haemostatic agent and is widely used today. But, very littlie work has been done to define the local effect of bone wax on healing and osteogenesis and its eventual fate in animals.

The objective of this study is thus, undertaken in this chapter to investigate the effects of bone wax on cortical bone healing.

Clinically healthy adult New Zealand white rabbits (10) of either sex are divided equally in to two groups A and B, consisting of 5 animals each. All animals are kept in standard diet and management throughout the experiment. In all animals’ mid-shaft simple transverse fracture are created in both the ulnae under Xylazine-Ketamine anaesthesia. In animals of group A, bone wax packed in between two fracture ends, whereas, in animals of group B, fracture site kept as it is.

Lateral and anterio-posterior radiographs are taken on days 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 post-fracture. The radiographs are observed for progress of fracture healing and complication, if any at different interval. The specimens for histopathological study are collected from the healed site of test bone immediately after euthanizing the animals on day 40. Every specimen is consisted of both healing site and adjacent host bone. The bone sections are preserved in 10% formalin for 9-10 days and then are decalcified using Goodling and Stewart’s solution (15% formic acid, 5% formalin and 80% distilled water). Completely decalcified bone sections are then processed routinely for H&E staining. These sections are observed for the status of healing at the fracture site at cellular level.

The skin and the mucous membrane join at the corners of the mouth, in the nose and at the anus. On the lips the corners crack, get ulcerated and swollen. Introduction

Soil is the natural habitat of a number of microbes viz. bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, algae and many viruses. Out of these, bacteria are morphologically very simple as made up of just one cell of small size, therefore can multiply rapidly. Each viable bacterium at appropriate dilution can develop into a colony. Hence by counting the number of these colonies which develop on a selective growth medium, the number of viable cells of bacteria present in soil can be ascertained. Since the number of the bacteria present in soil is very high, the soil suspension is to be sufficiently diluted to reduce the number of colonies and to prevent their overlapping. The number of colonies formed from a diluted sample multiplied by the extent of dilution (dilution factor) gives the number of viable cells present

Introduction

The betelvine is a perennial dioecious climber and is believed to have originated in Central and Eastern Malaysia. It is mainly cultivated in South East Asian countries, viz., India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, etc. It is one of the important commercial crops grown mostly by small and marginal farmers in the states of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa with an estimated area of 53,539 ha (Ray, 2008). Annual production is worth Rs. 9000 million and estimated that about 20 million people earn their livelihood directly or indirectly partly or fully from production, processing, handling, transportation and marketing of betel leaves in India. Betel leaves worth 30-40 million rupees are exported to countries like Bahrain, Canada, Great Britain, Nepal, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and many other European countries.

Air pollution is the major environmental problem due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. It has led to continuous deterioration of air quality in both developed and developing countries.

Air pollution is characterized by high concentrations of suspended particulate matter, oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. Air pollution has long term effects on fruit trees; when exposed to higher orabnormal levels of various air pollutants. The injury symptoms range from visible marks on foliage, reduced growth and yield to premature death of the plant. The development and severity of injury depends not only on the concentration of the particular pollutant, but also on a number of other supporting factors. These include the duration of exposure to the pollutant, the plant species and development stage as well as conducive environmental factors.

Introduction

Dart impact test is performed on plastic films and laminates to determine the effect of free falling dart on plastic films. The energy created by the falling dart causes the film to fail under some specified conditions. The test is widely performed by the manufacturers in plastic industries and paper & packaging industries to assess the durability and strength of the plastic films and other related products.

Dart impact strength is dependent on film thickness as the test is sensitive to orientation of the chains in the film. The tackiness of the film (slip additives) and the condition of the dart surface also influence the values determined by this test. As dart impact is not tested in any specific film direction, it is sensitive to chain orientation in both directions. Best impact strength are usually obtained when the orientation is balanced in the Machine Direction and Cross Direction.

Cell culture contamination continues to be a major problem and a subject of great concern. Contamination may enter the cell culture system as physical, chemical or biological component of the environment and biological contamination represent the greatest threat as living organism metabolize and replicate. Replication increases the titre of the contaminant.
 
Physical contamination : Physical components of cell culture systems such as radiation, irradiation (UV light and fluorescent light), temperature extremes can cause reduced cell growth and cell death. To minimize the problems, incubators should be located where ambient temperature is relatively constant and no vibration (near centrifuge). Media and media components should not be stored in glass door refrigerators, next to radioisotopes, bench tops or outside the refrigerator or in the hood for prolonged period.

Objective: To extract and perform enzyme assay of polyphenol oxidase from plant.

Background information:

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO or monophenol monooxygenase or polyphenol oxidase I, chloroplastic) is a tetramer that contains four atoms of copper per molecule, and binding sites for two aromatic compounds and oxygen (www.worthington-biochem.com). The enzyme catalyses the o-hydroxylation of monophenol molecules in which the benzene ring contains a single hydroxyl substituent to o-diphenols (phenol molecules containing two hydroxyl substituents). It can also further catalyse the oxidation of o-diphenols to produce o-quinones.

PPO causes the rapid polymerization of o-quinones to produce black, brown or red pigments (polyphenols) that cause fruit browning. The amino acid tyrosine contains a single phenolic ring that may be oxidised by the action of PPOs to form o-quinone. Hence, PPOs are some time referred as tyrosinases (Mayer, 2006).

Jolley et al. (1974) referred to PPO as 4 electron-transferring phenol oxidase and oxygen. It is responsible for browning reactions throughout the phylogenetic scale.

Plant Growth Regulator (PGR) are diverse group of organic compound other than nutrients, produced artificially or by plants which in low concentrations promote, inhibit or modify the physiological process in plant. Among the PGRs produced by plants are auxins (indole-3-acetic acid and its derivatives), gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid and ethylene.

Application of certain plant growth regulators promotes the process of seed germination, and development of roots in cuttings and layers. Various growth regulators have been used with striking success. Of these auxins such as indole3-acetic acid (IAA), indolebutyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) have the greatest effect on root formation in cuttings and layers. These chemicals speed up the healing of the wound, induce more roots and their development. They are now used universally in the propagation of many fruit plants. The growth regulators are effective in minute concentration and are usually applied in dilute solutions and dust formulations or rarely in grease bases such as lanolin. Plant growth regulators are generally calculated in the form of parts per million (ppm) or microgram per gram (mg/g).
