Bone healing is an extraordinary process involving not only an inflammatory reaction and formation of callus but also reconstruction of the defect to regain its original biomechanical strength. Bone healing can be modified by variety of endogenous or exogenous factors that affect the metabolic function of bone cells. Prostaglandins (PG), a family of cycled derivation of unsaturated long chain fatty acids, are intimately associated with bone metabolism, and are important as locally active agents with significant effects on bone and bone cells in vitro. In some experimental studies, it is suggested that the local increase of prostaglandin in response to trauma may act to stimulate differentiation and proliferation of osteoprogenitor cells during fracture healing, whereas, specific prostaglandin antagonists, indomethacin, inhibited fracture healing. The objective of this chapter is to investigate the effects of locally (defect-site) administered prostaglandin (PGE₂) on cortical bone healing in rabbit model.

Clinically healthy adult New Zealand White rabbits (10) of either sex are divided equally into groups A and B, consisting of 5 animals each. They are kept on standard diet and management throughout the experiment. In all the animals, mid-shaft single transverse fracture is created in both the ulnae under thiopental (2.5%) anaesthesia.

In test group A, 0.1 ml (25 µg) prostaglandin (PGE₂) is injected at fracture site on alternate day for 30 post operative days, whereas, group B is served as control. In both the groups lateral and antero-posterior radiographs are taken on days 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 postoperatively to observe progress of fracture healing and complication, if any at different intervals.

The word NUX VOMICA is derived from Latin word NUX meaning nut and VOMERE meaning vomiting because of the peculiar property of the nut.

These conditions produce an irritable, nervous system, hypersensitive and over impressionable, which Nux will do much to soothe and calm. Especially adapted to digestive disturbances, portal congestion and hypochondriacal states depending thereon. Nux patients are easily chilled, avoid open air. Nux always seems to be out of tune, inharmonious spasmodic action.

Introduction

Fungi constitute an important part of microflora of normal soil. In soils, fungal propagules vary from 2 x 10⁴ to 1 x 10⁶ per gram soil. The propagule being considered as fungal hyphae, spore, and hyphal fragments which is capable of giving colony on the plate. Most soil forms have a filamentous organisation capable of reproduction by means of spores. Their development is especially favoured by soils having acidic reactions. Soil fungi has significant role in organic matter decomposition, as a plant pathogens and in the interaction with other soil microorganisms. Agar plate count method is commonly used as a measure of fungal population in soil.

Ducks are prone to several external parasites and are also affected by external parasites found in other poultry birds. Birds are plagued by an remarkable range of ectoparasites, ranging from feather-feeding lice, to feather degrading bacteria and many of these ectoparasites have severe harmful effects on host health. External parasites can make ducks very uncomfortable, transmits several diseases and can be fatal in untreated cases. Among the ectoparasites lice is most commonly found in ducks. Ectoparasites infested birds become restless and the feeding and sleeping is disturbed resulting in decreased growth rate and egg production.

Common ectoparasites present on ducks-

In subclinical endometritis (SCE), there is inflammation of the internal lining of uterus (endometrium). It is one of the major causes of repeat breeding in cattle and causes significant reduction of reproductive performance. Cervico- vaginal mucus in subclinical endometritis is clear in contrast to endometritis. It is also called cytological endometritis and is associated with increased proportion (percentage) of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) in endometrial cytology samples. SCE affected cows have delayed first service and subsequent pregnancy causing significant economic losses due to reduction in reproductive performance, feed intake increase per lactation, milk yield reduction and increase in culling rate.

Introduction

When testing a food product for shelf-life and stability, the packaging is a major factor to be considered. It is necessary to carry out stability testing in the packaging intended for marketing due to interactions that may occur between the package, the product and the environment. Testing is also important for establishing the correct specifications for procurement and quality control of incoming materials.

The standards of packaging materials play a significant role in establishing optimum packaging specification. Properties of packaging materials like plastic and paper are affected by variables like temperature and humidity. Sensitivity of the packaging material to heat, light and moisture is due to their chemical nature. Compatibility of the packaging is as significant as development of the packaging systems or selecting packaging materials for food products.

Enumeration of cells is essential to determine the multiplicity of infection, efficiency of plating and to obtain the specific number of cells for an experiment. The concentration of cells of a suspension can be counted using a haemocytometer. Each chamber is divided into a grid of nine large squares. Each large square is 1mmX1mm (area 1 mm²) and the depth is o.1 mm. The volume of each square is 0.1 mm³ or 10^-4 cm³. Since 1 cm³ is equal to 1 ml, the number of cells per ml of suspension can be obtained by multiply the average count per large square by 10⁴ and reciprocal of dilution factor. Dilution is made in such a way that one large square contain about 20-60 cells. The haemocytometer chambers should be filled by capillary action and cell clump are counted as one cell. A total count does not distinguish between living and dead cells. The number of viable cells can be determined by staining the cells with trypan blue or erythrosine B. In trypan blue staining cells appear as unstained whereas dead cells appear as blue.

Background information

Catalase is a commonly distributed enzyme and present in approximately all organisms exposed to oxygen (such as bacteria, plants and animals). Catalysis of H₂O₂ into H₂O and O₂ is done by catalase enzyme (Goodsell, 2004).

The action of the gonadial hormone is not confined to the growth and development of the sexual organs alone, but the normal body growth as well as the growth of the skeleton are to a great extent influenced by these hormones. Of the female gonadial hormones, the action of estrogen and progesterone on skeletal growth has not been studied in detail. Some reports implicate estrogen deficiency in post menopausal osteoporosis and shows that estrogen replacement therapy can help to prevent that post menopausal stage of accelerated rate of bone loss. It’s reported that the progesterone treatment play a significant role in regulating cortical bone cell activity and as such, suggest that progesterone may play a part in the prevention and slowing down of cortical bone loss in females following menopause or oophorectomy. The effect of gonadotropic hormone on bone healing has not yet been studied in detail. The chapter is thus, undertaken to investigate the effects of gonadotropic hormone (Gn-rh)) on cortical bone healing in female rabbits.

Clinically healthy adult female New Zealand white rabbits (10) are divided equally into groups A and B each consisting of 5 animals. All animals are kept on standard diet and management throughout the experiment. In all animals midshafts simple transverse fracture is created in both the ulnae under thiopental (2.5%) anesthesia. In test group (group A) 0.1 ml of Gn-rh analogue is injected intramuscularly at 3 days interval up to 30 days post operatively.

Lateral and anterio-posterior radiographs are taken on days 0, 10, 20. 30. and 40-post fracture. These radiographs are observed for progress of fracture healing and complication, if any, at different intervals. The specimens for histopathological study are collected from the healed site of test bone immediately after euthanizing the animals on day 40. Every specimen consists of better healing site and adjacent host bone. The bone sections are preserved in 10% formalin for 9 to 10 days and then are decalcified using Goodling and Stewart’s solution (15% formic acid, 5% formalin and 80% distilled water). Completely decalcified bone sections are then processed routinely for H & E staining. These sections are observed for status of healing at fracture site.

The common acid " debility" is very marked in this remedy, producing a nervous exhaustion. Mental debility first, later physical. A congenital soil for the action of Phos. Acid is found in young people who grow rapidly, and who are overtaxed, mentally or physically. It is useful when the body is exposed to acute diseases, excesses grief, loss of vital fluids. Useful in relieving pain of cancer.

An excellent use of phosphoric Acidum is made in curing mental and physical debility and in acute and chronic diseases where the patient is tired in mind and body. The mental debility is a result of nervous exhaustion in persons who have been working overtime at a young age. Physical debility comes as a result of acute disease, sexual excesses, grief, and loss of vital fluids from the body. Haemorrhages in typhoid, therefore require Phosphoric Acidum.

Introduction

The actinomycetes are gram positive, non-motile, non-sporulating and nonacid fast bacteria. Sometimes these are called ray fungi and are connecting link between the bacteria and the true fungi. They possess a very fine vegetative mycelium that does not fragment into bacillary or coccoid forms and therefore their colonies on agar are commonly cohesive or tough in consistency. In many soils, the actinomycetes accounts from 10 to 25% of the total count on agar plates. Their number is higher in soils of low moisture content than in wet soils. They are responsible for degrading more resistant carbon material in soil like humus. They are also important flora of manure heaps. Most of these, particularly Streptomyces, produce antibiotics and so are of a great value

Method: To check the performance of these pans, prepare 3 besan chillas on each type of pan by using equal quantity of oil and batter. Then compare and evaluate prepared dishes on 5 parameters i.e. Appearance, Texture, Aroma, Color and Taste by using 9-point hedonic scale.

Orientation and general precautions in laboratory: Laboratory safety glasses or goggles should be worn in any area where chemicals are used or stored.
