Botany:Snake gourd belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae native to Southeastern Asia and Australia but cultivated throughout the world for its curved and oddly shaped fruits that appear like snakes hanging on the supports or ground. This subtropical plant grows very fast in warm climates and produces lots of fruits for a long time. It is suitable for growing for home garden and fresh market.

Climate and soil: Snake gourd is adapted to wide variety of soil and climatic conditions. It requires a minimum temperature of 18^oC during early growth, but optimal temperatures are in the range of 24–27^oC. Snake gourd tolerates a wide range of soil but prefers a well drained sandy loam soil that is rich in organic matter. The optimum soil pH is 6.0–6.7, but plants tolerate alkaline soils up to pH

5. Description

Artocarpus hirsutus is a tropical evergreen tree species. It prefers moist, deciduous to partially evergreen woodlands. It grows in altitudes ranging from sea level to an elevation of 1000 m. The height of tree can reach up to 35 m and about 4.5 m in girth. The main stem is straight and cylindrical. It is used as shade tree in coffee plantations. The seeds (with 17% oil) are eaten or used medicinally. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 22 - 32°C. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 2,500 - 3,500 mm. Older plants succeed in full sun or moderate shade, but younger trees require reasonable levels of shade. It is fast growing species with deep tap root.

Principle

Standard solutions are the solutions of accurately known concentrations. There are two types of standard solutions viz., primary and secondary.

A known quantity of the substances is dissolved in a volumetric flask and the volume is made upto the mark. Standard solutions prepared in this way are known as primary standard. This method can be used for preparation of standard solutions of substances which satisfy the following conditions.

About 8.8% of India’s population is engaged by the livestock industry, which provides a living for two-thirds of the country’s rural communities.

A. Triglycerides Clinical significance To form lipoproteins, triglycerides combine with cholesterol, phospholipids, and plasma proteins. To determine whether hypertriglyceridemia may be present, the serum triglyceride concentration is measured (increased blood and serum levels of triglycerides). Chylomicrons and very low density lipoprotein (VLDLs), which cause the extensive lipaemia frequently observed in serum or plasma samples, are both mostly composed of glycerides.

Humic substances, the natural organic materials, represent a mixture of relatively small organic components, which form supramolecular structures held together by dispersive forces such as n - n and van der Waals’ interactions. Identification of the best analytical method for complete characterization of humic substances is still being discussed. Humic substances differ in molecular weight, elemental composition, acidity and cation exchange capacity and often are classified into three major fractions according to their solubility as humic acids, fulvic acids and humins.

Column chromatography is a separation technique in which the stationary bed is in a tube. The particles of the solid stationary phase or the support coated with a liquid stationary phase may fill the whole inside volume of the tube (packed column) or be concentrated on or along the inside tube wall leaving an open, unrestricted path for the mobile phase through the tube (open tubular column). Differences in rates of movement through the medium are calculated as different retention times of the sample.
 
The separation of compounds in the column chromatography takes place based on the phenomenon of adsorption. Here the substance gets attracted by electrostatic forces to the surface of a unit particle. If the substance is in solution and the particle insoluble in the solvent, then part of the substance is adsorbed and part remains in solution. The ratio between the amount adsorbed and the amount in solution is a constant called adsorption coefficient. The separation takes pace based on the differences in the adsorption coefficients.

Livestock feeds are generally classified according to the amount of a specific nutrient they furnish in the ration. They are divided into two general classes roughages and concentrates. Roughages are bulky feeds containing relatively large amount of less digestible material, i.e. crude fiber more than 18% and lower than 60% TDN on dry matter basis. Concentrates are feeds which contain relatively smaller amount (less than 18%) of fiber and have comparatively high digestibility and as a result higher nutritive value having more than 60% TDN.

A. Roughages

Roughages are subdivided into two major groups – succulent and dry, based upon the moisture content. Succulent feeds usually contain moisture content from 60 to 90%, whereas dry contains only 10 to 15% moisture. Succulent may again be divided into pasture, cultivated fodder crops, tree leaves, silage and root crops. Dry roughages may be further classified as hay and straw based on the nutritive value and methods of preservation.

Plant growth regulators are organic compounds occurring naturally in plants as well as synthetic, other than nutrients, which in small amounts promote, inhibit or modify any physiological process in plants.

Basically, PGRs are of two types

Botany: Bottle gourds belonging to the family cucurbitaceae is an annual vine having white flowers and smooth, large, hard-shelled gourds. Brownish seeds are numerous in a whitish green pulp. Each seed is somewhat rectangular in shape with grooved notches near the attached end. Grown most often in warmer climates, this squash grows from 6 to 36 inches long and 3 to 12 inches in diameter.

The cooked vegetable is not only easy to digest but also contains cooling, calming (or sedative), diuretic properties. It contains low calories also has iron, Vitamin C and B complex. Regular consumption of this vegetable provides relief to people suffering with digestive problems, diabetics and convalescents.

t TEST FOR SINGLE MEAN

A t-test is any statistical hypothesis test in which the test statistic follows a Student’s t distribution if the null hypothesis is supported. It can be used to determine if two sets of data are significantly different from each other, and is most commonly applied when the test statistic would follow a normal distribution if the value of a scaling term in the test statistic were known. When the scaling term is unknown and is replaced by an estimate based on the data, the test statistic (under certain conditions) follows a Student’s t distribution.

Theory

For locating a point on the ground on a contour, its position and elevation in a horizontal plane should be known. In direct method, the contours to be plotted are located on the ground with a level by making various points on each contour, and these points are surveyed and plotted on plan. This method is more accurate but slow and tedious, and is suitable for contouring small areas where great accuracy is required. For locating the points of the same elevation, the instrument is set in such a commanding position from where maximum number of points can be covered. The bench mark is established near the site of survey. The height of the instrument (H.I) is determined after taking a back sight (B.S) on the established bench mark.

More often, if the reagent is not a primary standard, a secondary standard solution must be prepared. The chemical is dissolved and made up or diluted to the desired concentration and then it is standardized against a primary standard or against another reliably known secondary standard solution. Such solutions are called as secondary standard solutions.

Introduction

Urea is one of the common fertilizers used as a source of nitrogen. It has nitrogen in amide form (-NH₂) and this form of nitrogen is not utilized by plants. So it has to be hydrolysed. The enzyme, urease hydrolyses the urea to ammonia and ammoniacal nitrogen is taken up by plants or further nitrified.

The measurement of activity of this enzyme in soil is important from soil fertility point of view. There are two methods for determination of the urease activity of soils.

• First involves the measurement of end products of urea hydrolysis. i.e., NH₃ or CO₂.

Calcium Clinical Significance Calcium is an essential mineral which is involved in many body systems. These include the skeleton, enzyme activation, muscle metabolism, blood coagulation and osmoregulation. In the blood calcium exists as 50% ionized, 40% protein bound and 10% complexes with anions such as citrate and phosphate. Only ionized calcium is biologically active in bone formation, neuromuscular activity, cellular biochemical processes and blood coagulation. Factors governing the total plasma concentration are complex and include interaction with other chemical moieties, proteins and hormones. Calcium, phosphorus and albumin metabolism are interdependent.

Introduction

Introduction

Parvoviruses are nonenveloped, single-stranded DNA viruses belonging to the genus Protoparvovirus, member of the Parvoviridae family, that has been included within the species Carnivore protoparvovirus 1, together with Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), Mink enteritis virus (MEV) and Raccoon parvovirus (RPV), according to the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (Tijssenet al 2011). Two distinct parvoviruses are known to infect dogs—the pathogenic CPV 2 and CPV-1 or the minute virus of canine (MVC). CPV-2, the causative agent of acute hemorrhagic enteritis and myocarditis in dogs, is one of the most important pathogenic viruses with high morbidity (100%) and frequent mortality up to 10% in adult dogs and 91% in pups. CPV-2 is the etiologic agent of a contagious disease, mainly characterized by clinical gastroenteritis signs in younger dogs. This virus that causes the disease “parvo”, first emerged among dogs in Europe around 1976. By 1978 the virus had spread unchecked, causing a worldwide epidemic of myocarditis and inflammation in the intestines (gastroenteritis) and could infect domestic dogs, spreading in the global dog population within 2 years. This original type, was rapidly replaced by two antigenic variants, types 2a and 2b (Parrish et al 1985, 1991), and in 2000 a third type CPV-2c was detected (Buonavogliaet al 2001). Canine parvovirus (CPV) is responsible for acute gastroenteritis in pups, with a high rate of mortality (Carmichael and Binn, 1981). We now know the virus is not limited to dogs, but is capable of causing infections in wild canines such as coyotes and wolves, and other wild animals, including foxes, raccoons and skunks. Since its emergence in 1978, it was and remains a common and important cause of morbidity and mortality in young dogs.

Taxidermy
The word ‘Taxidermy’ is derived from the Greek taxis meaning “fixing” or arrangement and derma meaning ‘skin’. It is possible to perform taxidermy of mammals, birds, fishes, reptiles and amphibians and procedure to perform taxidermy is also variable accordingly. In this case we will see the procedure applied to prepare a big cat (Tiger, lion, leopard etc.).
Skinning
To skin an animal make an inclusion from the chin along the belly to tip of tail, Then from paw to paw across the chest, and deal similarly with the hind legs. If they are done haphazard, The appearance of the skin will be completely wrecked. Place the carcass on its back and make an incision through the chin and carry it along the centre of the throat to the chest. There is a whorl of hair which runs from the chest along the belly to the vent, then carry the incision along from the vent to tip of tail. Fore- legs, after cutting through the ball of the pad the incision must be made exactly through the center of the white till it reaches the incision which is made from chin to tip of tail, the other foreleg is treated in the same way, both these incision should meet on the chest, and not end one above the other, Hind-legs after cutting through the ball of the pad. The incision runs behind the leg to end of the calcaneum, then turn inside the thigh. The hind leg, of course must be done in the same way. It will be better to mark with charcoal on proposed incision lines before the skinning carried out. After the pads have been skinned and turned back, also inside of the thigh and belly, there is not much need for the knife as the skin ought to be removed by what butchers term ‘ fisting ‘.
