Tensiometer is a device to measure soil moisture tension or equivalent negative pressure of water in the soil. A tensiometer consists of a tube sealed at one end by a porous ceramic cup which is in contact with the soil and a vacuum gauge or a manometer connected at the other end above the soil surface. When the tensiometer is filled with water, the manometer or gauge will read zero tension. When such a tensiometer is placed in an unsaturated soil, the soil in contact with the porous ceramic cup will immediately start sucking water through the porous cup wall. The water in the soil pores immediately establishes hydraulic equilibrium with the water in the cup through saturated pores of the cup wall. Water and solutes can f low through the pores of the cup wall but not the air within the working range of the tensiometer. Water could be sucked from the tensiometer by the soil until vacuum created inside the tensiometer is just sufficient to overcome the suction of the soil. At equilibrium, the tensiometer reads directly the amount of soil suction. The outf low of water from the cup is very little. The effective range of the tensiometer is 0 to 0.85 bars depending on quality of the porous cup.

5. Description

Baccaurea courtalensis is a trees of tropical evergreen forests of the southern Western Ghats. It is an endangered tree. The tree bears tiny crimson flowers on long stalks growing on the trunk of the tree (cauliflory). These stalks are arranged in clusters on the trunk. When in bloom the whole trunk appears red and is a beautiful sight. Fruits hang in clusters from the trunk of the tree. A tall tree produces cauliflory inflorescence. The flowers are unisexual, dioecious, male inflorescence in clustered racemes on short tubercles all over the trunk, red, female inflorescence in clustered racemes, mostly confined to base of the trunk, hence its named Mootapalam.

t TEST FOR PAIRED OBSERVATION

This test is used for testing whether two series of paired observations are gen- erated from the same population on the basis of the difference in their sample means.

Soil is analyzed to know the nature of soil, to classify and advocate to farmers about the peculiarities of the soils and how much of fertilizers should be applied for better crop production.

A composite soil, of course, can not be moved to into a laboratory. The value of the laboratory work depends upon care in sampling. Each soil sample needs to be a fair representative of the specific area or horizon worth sampling.

If the sample is to be a representative of an area, it is necessary to take large number of samples spread over the area, pool them and sub-sample it so as to get a sample of desired size. For soil survey work, samples are collected from a profile which is typical of the soil of the surrounding area.

Introduction

The enzyme nitrogenase is produced in all N₂-fixing systems. The activity of nitrogenase enzyme relates to the biological nitrogen fixation, which can be determined directly by measurement of fixation product, ammonia and the further products of its assimilation. The activity can also be measured indirectly by measuring the ability of nitrogenase to reduce the number of substrates other than N₂. Substrates such as nitrous oxide (N₂O), azide ion (N₃^- ), cyanide (CN^-) and isocyanide (NC^-) are reduced and the requirements for ATP and reductant are similar to those of N₂ fixation. The reduction of protons to molecular hydrogen has been used to measure the nitrogenase activity.

Dilworth (1966) and Schollhorn and Burris (1966&1967) observed the inhibitory effect of Acetylene (C₂H₂) on N₂ fixation by extracts of Clostridium pasteurianum. Dilworth (1966) further observed by mass spectrometry that the C₂H₂ was reduced to C₂H₄. Both gases are readily measured at very low concentrations by gas chromatographic techniques.

Creatinine Clinical significance Creatinine is produced at a steady rate due to muscle catabolism and is not reabsorbed by the kidney tubules after filtration. Its measurement provides an indirect assessment of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Unlike urea it is not markedly affected by diet or any aspect of liver function and therefore the test is more specific for renal dysfunction

The different modes of reproduction applied in vegetable crops are

Asexual

In this case the vegetative parts of the plants viz. rhizomes, corms, tubers, bulbs etc whole or part there off are utilized to produce new individuals. The typical examples are potato, sweetpotato, parwal, artichoke, colocasia, zinger, turmeric elephant foot yam, etc. There are some vegetative crops which can be reproduced through bcth vegetative part as well as seed e.g. asparagus.

Onion is one of the oldest cultivated plant species. Onion forms the bulb in the first year and the seed in the second year. The leaves arise from a shortened crown stem. The sheaths of the older or outermost leaves enclose the younger ones. The basal portion of the leaves encircles the stem, and thickens to form the bulb. The stem elongates during the second year forming the flower stalk. The onion has a fibrous root system extending to a depth of over one meter, but most of them are found in upper surface about one-half meter area.

Agricultural Seasons

Season is defined as “part of the year during which a distinguished type of weather prevails”.

A) Seasons of Temperate region

1. Spring (March – May) is the first season of the year in which plants being to grow and leaves emerge.
2. Summer (June – August) is the second and warmest season of the year out side the tropics during which plants flourish
3. Fall or Autumn (September – November) is the third season of the year in which leaves turn brown.
4. Winter (December – February) is the last and the coldest season of the year. Many trees loose their leaves.

As water enters the soil, air is displaced and the soil pores in the upper part of the profile become saturated. A continuous supply of water leads to an increasing depth of saturation. If the supply of water at the soil surface is cut off then the rapid downward movement of water may essentially ceased within 48 hours. The soil is then said to be at its field capacity. At this stage macropores are drained off but micropores are still filled with water for use by plants. Since it is difficult to draw a boundary line between macro-and micropores and there is no sudden change in the profile drainage rate for many soils, it is not easy to specify a depth and time after which soil water movement is negligible. Therefore, measurements are necessary in each soil to specify the time and depth of sampling after wetting. Special care would be necessary in soils with impeded drainage and sand lenses, which produce perched water tables.

F TEST (VARIANCE RATIO TEST)

F distribution is applied in several tests of significance relating to the equality of two sampling variances drawn on the basis of independent samples from a normal population.

Ultrasound has been used to image thyroid and parathyroid glands. It can assist in the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism in dogs and cats. Recently it has also been used to differentiate cases of primary hypothyroidism or euthyroid syndrome.

Introduction

The major biogenic gases, which contribute to global warming, are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Out of these, methane is the most important gas because its thermal absorption is 30 times greater than carbon dioxide, though its atmospheric concentration is about 200 times less than carbon dioxide. Atmospheric measurements of greenhouse gases indicate that methane concentration had increased by 1 per cent annually to 1.7 ppm (by volume) during the last decade. The steady increase of atmospheric methane concentration in the past 200 years has attracted much attention.

Flooded rice soils provide an optimum environment for methane production and emission. Flooding a soil creates essential redox potential, anaerobic decomposition of organic matter and stabilizes the soil pH near neutral, thus makes the congenial environment for methane emission.

Ber fruit fly:  Carpomyia vesuviana :Tephritidae

Adult is a small fly with black spots on the thorax and dark spots on the wings. They have only one pair of wings typical of diptera. The attack by the insect causes rotting of fruits and fruit drop. The adult female lays eggs singly in cavities made on the fruit by the ovipositor.  One female can lay up to 22 eggs. Egg period lasts for 2-3 days and the emerging maggots feed inside the fruit for about 7-10 days. The fully grown maggot falls to the ground to pupate in soil.  Pupal period is around 5-30 days. There can be 2-3 generations /year.

Gel-filtration chromatography or molecular sieve chromatography is a method based on molecular dimension. The gel consists of beads which are composed of dextran polymer (sephadex, agarose or polyacrylamide gels). The separation depends upon the different abilities of the various sample molecules to enter pores which contain the stationary phase. Very large molecules, which never enter the stationary phase, move through the chromatographic bed fastest. Smaller molecules, which can enter the gel pores, move very slowly through the column, because they spend a proportion of their mobility, time in the stationary phase. Molecules are, therefore eluted in the order of their decreasing molecular size.
