Ophthalmic or ocular ultrasound can provide important diagnostic information that is readily not available with other diagnostic techniques. Ocular ultrasound is emerging as an important diagnostic modality in veterinary ophthalmology.

Approximately 80 per cent of all flowering plant species are specialized for pollination by animals and mostly by insects. These crops account for 65 per cent of global food production, still leaving as much as 35 per cent depending on pollinating animals (Klein et al., 2007). These food crops include delicious products such as many of our tree fruits (e.g., apples, cherries, mangos, and avocados) and nuts (e.g., almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, and cashew nut), squashes, cucumbers, melons, citrus, and berries. In addition, many of oil seed crops benefit from bee pollination, such as mustard, coconut, canola, safflower, and many more.

The honey bee (Apis mellifera) is the most commonly used insect in agricultural crops as managed pollinator in North America and Europe, Japan, China, India and many other parts of the world as well. Farmers in the United States rent more than 2.5 million honey bee colonies every year for fulfillment of pollination deficit but today, the honey bee is threatened by colony collapse disorder (CCD). The demand for honey bees in California almond orchards rapidly increased due to increasing acreage, while on the other side, bee colonies decreased due to CCD, but that occurred during a time when honey bee colonies were not easy to procure and as a result, the cost of renting bees shot up from US$50 per hive in 2003 to US$140 per hive in 2006 (Sumner and Boriss, 2006). The rental charge increased about 3 times within 4 years.

Introduction

The total population of India according to recent estimates in 2015 is 1.28 billion (Anonymous, 2011). The population in the age-group of 15-34 years in India increased from 353 million in 2001 to 430 million in 2011. More than 50 per cent of India’s current population is below the age of 25 years old and over 65 per cent below the age of 35 years old.

The total population of Chhattisgarh State is 25,545,198 of which male and female are 12,832,895 and 12,712,303. Sex ratio is 991 i.e. for each 1000 male, which is above national average of 940. Literacy rate in Chhattisgarh has seen upward trend and is 71.04 per cent (Anonymous, 2011). Out of total population of Chhattisgarh 23.24 per cent people live in urban regions and 76.76 per cent people live in the villages of rural areas.

Women are the most potent segment of the population of a country. The women of today are the hopes of tomorrow. They are the back bone of the country. The socioeconomic development and prosperity of rural areas depends to a considerable extent, on the type of women living in rural areas, because the rural women have abilities to orient themselves to go along the main stream of the development process. They reflect the national potentiality and represent the life blood of a nation. Development of women determines the development of community and country as a whole. So, the future of the country lies in their hands, what they will become, what role they will play in a democratic society and what they will do, will be dependent to a greater extent on the period between their childhood to adulthood.

Solvent extraction is mainly used to remove dissolved substances from solutions or soluble material from solids /powders/ solid mixtures. Solvent extraction is explained using distribution law or partition law. The law states that if to a system of two liquid layers made up of two immiscible liquids/ slightly miscible liquids is added a third substance soluble in both layers , then the substance distributes itself between the two layers so that the ratio of concentration in one solvent to the concentration in the second solvent remains constant at a constant temperature.

Water holding capacity of soil is the amount of water that a given soil can hold against the force of gravity. Soil texture and organic matter are the key components that determine the water holding capacity of a soil. Soils with smaller particle sizes (silt and clay) have larger surface area and can hold more water as compared to sand which has large particle sizes and smaller surface area. It is an important hydro-physical characteristic of a soil because it provides simple means of determining useful moisture levels to maintain soil for good plant growth. Detail procedure for determination of water holding capacity of soil using Keen box method (Piper, 1966) is described here.

CHI- SQUARE TEST (χ₂ TEST)

The chi square test is used to determine if the two attributes are independent of each other. Chi square is a measure to evaluate the difference between observed frequencies and expected frequencies to examine whether the difference so obtained is due to a chance factor or due to sampling error.

In a contingency table if each attribute is divided into two classes it is known as 2×2 contingency table. When one attribute is divided into two classes and another into r or c resultant contingency table is known as r×2 or 2×c contingency table. Here, r denotes the number of rows and c the number of columns. For such data, the statistical hypothesis under test is that the two attribute are independent of one another. Theory

The rate of flow of water in open channel can be determined by multiplying the cross sectional area of the flow section at right angles to the direction of flow by the average velocity of water. In area-velocity method, the water can be measured at motion. The water is measured in motion by means of rate of flow or discharge and is expressed in litre per second (lps), litre per minute (lpm), cubic metre per second (m³/s), etc. Litre per second: A continuous flow amounting to 1 litre passing through a point each second. Cubic metre per second: A flow of water equivalent to a stream of 1 m long, 1 m wide and 1 m deep flowing at a velocity of 1 metre per second. Sonography of the nervous system in dogs dates back to 1972 when it was employed in experimental studies. Thick bony cage of the brain limits the sonographic evaluation of the brain. It has an important place in human paediatric medicine. Sonography of the brain and the nervous system is not very common in veterinary medicine.

Most of the plant parasitic nematodes affect the root portion of plants except Anguina spp., Aphelenchus spp., Aphelenchoides spp., Ditylenchus spp., Bursaphelenchus cocophilus and B. xylophilus. Nematodes suck the sap of the plants with the help of stylet and causes leaf discolouration, stunted growth, reduced leaf size and fruits, lesions on roots, galls, reduced root system and finally wilting.

Introduction

The soil microbial biomass is an important component of the soil organic matter that regulates the transformation and storage of nutrients. It is a labile component of the soil organic fraction containing 1 to 3% of the soil carbon and up to 5% of the total soil N. The microbiologically mediated processes affect ecosystem functions associated with nutrient cycling, soil fertility, global C change and soil organic matter turnover. The size and activity of the soil microbial biomass must be assessed to fully understand nutrient flux in managed and natural ecosystems.

Soil microbial biomass estimations are useful in investigations that compare temporal nutrient fluctuations along natural and perturbed gradients. The effect of tillage, crop rotations and soil type on organic carbon and nutrient turnover can be assessed by following nutrient pools and activity associated with the soil microbial biomass.

Purpose of study An essential component of the diagnostic process in the evaluation of the disease process is the laboratory diagnosis of any parasitic infection. Sometimes, this confirms the presumptive clinical diagnosis, and other times, it provides evidence that the clinician may have ignored. A sufficient specimen must be used for the examination to achieve a satisfactory diagnosis. Internal parasite testing needs to be done often. Regular inspection typically enables early parasitism identification, preventing gross infection. Dialysis
 
The main purpose of dialysis in biological research is the removal of small molecular weight (M.W.) constituents from biological fluids. This is achieved by dialysing the material in a cellulose tubing with a pore size of 40-80 A0 (4-8mm) diameter which allows the passage of compounds with molecular weight less than 10,000. The following is the procedure followed: cut the length of the dialysis tubing depending upon the volume to be processed. Open the sides of the tubing with a flow of distilled water and transfer it to a boiling water bath. Do not allow the tubing to dry as it will distort the pore size. Make a bag by tying a knot at one end of the tubing. Transfer the solution to be dialysed into the bag. Tie another knot at the top of the bag. The bag is then put in a beaker containing the solution against which dialysis is to be carried out. In general, one volume of the desired solution is dialysed against 50-100 volumes of buffer. The total period of dialysis could range from 8-48hr. The efficiency of dialysis could be increased by stirring and changing the dialysate solution at frequent intervals.

Pollination : Transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma is termed as pollination.

1. Self pollination

When pollen grains from an anther fallen to stigma of same flower or same plant is called self pollination or autogamy. In other word when pollen and pistil are from the same plant, often (but not always) from the same flower. In other word when transfer of pollen grain from anther to stigma of a same flower or same plant is called as self pollination. In which development of seed by self pollination is known as autogamy it is the closest form of breeding. Autogamy leads to homozygosity such species develop homozygous balance and do not exhibit significant inbreeding depression several mechanisms which promote autogamy.

Flow of water across a soil layer or a sample of known dimension can be best described by Darcy’s law expressed as:

It is an excellent fruit tree for agro forestry and social forestry. This species is found in dry deciduous forest throughout the country excluding eastern Himalayan forests . The flesh of ripe fruit is very palatable and is largely eaten raw or roasted and the oily kernels are the most important part and are used in preparation of puddings. Mesocarp of fruit is edible and cherished by children. Very good juice may be prepared from the pulp of chironji fruits.

The chi square is a continuous distribution based on the assumption that the ul- timate class frequency is not less than 5 otherwise the value of χ₂ will be over- estimated and may cause too many rejections of null hypothesis. Therefore, to maintain the continuity of χ₂ and to draw the correct inference in 2×2 we apply a correction which is known as Yates’s correction for continuity.

Principle

When water is ponded inside the concentric metallic rings driven into the soil, the rate of recession (fall) of the water level, or the rate of water withdrawn from a supply source used to maintain a constant head of water on the soil surface, gives the infiltration rate of the soil.

During infiltration of water into the soil, appreciable lateral movement of water may also occur. To avoid the error due to this lateral movement, two concentric rings are used. Equal heights of water are to be maintained in both the rings. The infiltration is measured in the inner ring only. The rate of water intake per unit area varies markedly with the size of the rings and the depth of the soil to which they are driven into. Infiltration rate studies are preceded by the profile, initial soil moisture and any other problems of the region in which the soil is located.

Plant parasitic nematodes favour the establishment of secondary pathogens viz., fungi, bacteria, virus etc. The nematodes alter the host in such a way that the host tissue becomes suitable for colonization by the secondary pathogens. Even though the nematodes themselves are capable of causing considerable damage to the crops, their association with other organisms aggravate the disease.
