Introduction

Nitrogen (N) is found in the arable horizon of the soil, mostly in organic material. In the soil solution, organic N is gradually transformed into ammoniacal (NH₄ ⁺), nitrite (NO₂ ^–) and nitrate (NO₃ ^–) nitrogen by microbial processes. Organic-N is, in itself, of very little use to plants, as it can not be absorbed as such. It is, therefore, necessary to estimate the different forms of mineralized or available N. The NO₃ ^–_N and NO₂ ^–-N together, hardly, exceed 1 % of the total N in normal soil.

The available N in soil refers to a fraction of the total N which is converted into forms accessible to the plants. This constitutes, on an average, only 0.5-2.5 % (rarely 5 %) of the total N in a soil at any given time. Nitrogen is, generally, absorbed by plants as NO₃ ^–, under oxidized environment (upland condition), and as NH₄ ⁺, under reduced condition. NO₂ ^– is sometimes, detectable, but the amount is, generally, very small vis-a-vis NH₄ ⁺ or NO₃ ^– and, hence does not warrant its determination. The sum total of NH₄ ⁺ and NO₃ ^–- N is smaller than the total N, which becomes available to plants and the difference being attributed to the mineralization of the organic N, during the crop growth cycle.

Introduction

Bacteriological examination of milk indicates the hygienic condition of the milk i.e., quality of milk in relation to the health of consumer. Two main objectives of carrying out bacteriological examination are to evaluate the degree of cleanliness in the vicinity of production and handling of milk; and secondly to check the presence of infectious microorganism. Generally, number of bacteria present per milliliter is taken as an index in the routine examination of milk as other tests for identification and differentiation of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms are time consuming and expensive.

Direct Microscopic Count (DMC) consists of examining stained films of measured volume of milk or milk product, dried on a glass slide under a compound microscope. This method enables rapid estimation of total population of bacteria of a milk sample with relatively more accuracy as compared to other methods.

The cultivation of pineapple, Ananas comosus is prevalent in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and North eastern parts of the country. It is one of the choicest fruits all over the world because of its pleasant taste and flavour. Pineapple is a good source of vitamin A and B and fairly rich in vitamin C and minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. It is also a source of bromelin, a digestive enzyme. In addition to being eaten fresh, the fruit can also be canned and processed in to different forms. The description of some of the major pests infesting pineapple are given hereunder:

Mealy bug, Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell) (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera)

It is a polyphagous pest and besides pineapple it infests banana, sugarcane, citrus, coffee and long pepper. These are small, oval and soft bodied sucking insects. The eggs are pink in colour but remain inside the female body. The first stage nymphs are called crawlers which moves to find a suitable spot for sucking of cell sap, thereafter they settle at a particular place. The adult is elliptical and bears 17 pairs of wax filaments (Plate 10h). The colour of the pest is pink but looks white due to white waxy covering. This chapter introduces the standards, certification and labelling systems that establish confidence in wool quality and commercial descriptions. It discusses the roles of the International Wool Textile Organisation, ISO and the Bureau of Indian Standards in developing testing and product standards. Fibre-content declarations, care labels, Woolmark certification, quality assurance, accreditation and traceability are examined. The chapter also considers geographical indications and protection of heritage products, showing how standards and certification support fair trade, consumer protection and premium positioning.

Infrared light (800-1500nm) interacts with molecules at the level of atomic vibrations. An infrared spectrum gives valuable information about the molecular structure. It is rarely used for quantitative purposes and hence concentration measurements are not possible. Infrared light detects vibrations characteristic of functional groups. For example the C=O (carbonyl) group absorbs at 1700 cm-1 (wave number). The main region of interest for analytical purposes is from 2.5- 25µm or 4000- 400 cm-1. At wavelengths below 25µm the radiation has sufficient energy to cause changes in the vibrational energy levels of the molecule, and these are accompanied by changes in the rotational energy levels. The pure rotational spectra of molecules occur in the far infra red region (50-1000 µm) and are used for determining molecular properties.

Abstract

The Stree Shakthi Groups (SHGs) were launched in Karnataka during 2000-01 aimed at improving the overall development of rural women in Karnataka. A review of the progress achieved by these illeterate or less educated, hither to continued to be economically dependent with no voice in decision making, is nothing short of a miracle. With an enrollment of one and a half million in 5000 villages, their savings and borrowings run into hundreds of crores and employment opportunities are provided to lakhs of farm women. Apart from agriculture related activities, some of them have also involved in some unconventional, income generating activites. Economic empowerment has emboldened these beneficiaries to not only fight against social evils but also win their battles. Overall, SHGs have transformed the life of rural women treatmendously in a positive direction.

Origin and history: Pineapple is considered as one of the most popular tropical fruit, and is known as “Golden Queen” all over the globe. It can be grown as mixed crop in most of the orchards and also as hedge plant and as a pure crop. It is drought tolerant and suitable for marginal lands. Pineapple contain an enzyme Bromeline and volatile compound three methyl propionate ester. It is widely cultivated throughout the world and country is like Malaya, Hawaii, Brazil, South Africa, Singapore, Mexico and India. In India it is cultivated in eastern part of the country like West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

To design a graded bunds

The procedure in design of contour bund is followed while design a graded bund. A stability of 10-25%, should be given to contour bund. This is called graded bund.

Example: Design a graded bund length of 500 m with an average land slope of 3.5% in a sandy loam soil. Vertical distance between consecutive bund is 2.5 m. Rainfall intensity for the time of concentration and for the recurrence interval is 18.5 cm/hr. The runoff coefficient is 0.3. For stability, the grade provided for first 100 m is 0.1%, for next 200 m is 0.15% and for last 200 m is 0.18%. For the sandy loam soil, side slope of the bund and slope of seepage line are 1.5:1 and 5:1 respectively is assumed.

Introduction

Standard Plate Count (SPC) is used for determination of population of viable microbes. Enumeration procedures are based on the assumption that microbial cells present in a sample mixed with an agar medium form visible separated colonies. The bacterial colonies developed on the plates are counted. Each colony is presumed to have developed from one bacterium or clump of bacterial cells. Therefore, the results are expressed in colony counts per /ml of sample or colony forming units per /ml (cfu /ml). Total number of colonies counted on the plate multiplied by the dilution factor represents the number of viable organisms in a sample. SPC is a useful method for evaluating the microbiological quality at various stages of processing. It is also helpful in detecting the source of contamination in the product.

We, the participants of ITAF2023 visited Sriracha fisheries research station under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Naphat Panthukumbol and Dr. Somrat Taweedet on 16/10/23 at 08:00am. The research station is under faculty of fisheries, Kasetsart university in Chonburi Province. The purpose of visit was to learn about the mussel aquaculture and Integrated Multi- Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA).

1) Mussel aquaculture

Cultured species was Perna viridis( Green mussel ). Almost all rafts were owned by fishermen and 10 rafts were under the management of sriracha fisheries research station. The cost of production was 100 baht /acre. Simple method of culture is practiced by installing rafts before breeding season and allowing the natural spawn to attach. The harvesting size of mussel is 8 cm. Observed growth rate is 1cm/ month. Other maintenance includes repairing of ropes ,buoys etc. during off-season. Farmers face many constraints like plankton bloom, waste water discharge, predation by sting ray,parasitism during summer months.

Grape, Vitis vinifera are cultivated mainly in the sub-tropical and tropical regions, however, it can also be grown in the temperate regions. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu are the main grape growing states. In India, the grapevine cultivation is mainly for producing fruits for the table purpose. Around 80 insect pests and mites cause damage in the grape vine yards directly or indirectly, of which few are of major importance. The damage can be checked if the details of the major pest problems are known in advance. The details about major insect pests and mites are given hereunder:

Thrips, Rhipiphorothrips cruentatus Hood (Thripidae: Thysanoptera)

It is a polyphagous pest feeding on number of hosts like rose, jamun, guava etc. but grapevine is the most preferred host. This pest is prevalent in all grapevine growing regions of the country. The eggs are bean shaped and dirty white. The nymphs are yellowish brown with reddish brown abdomen. The pupa is brownish and have irritative movements on

India is known as the food basket of the world. It is the second largest producer of fruit till now after China, but its contribution to the Global market of fruit processing is just 1per cent. This is due to the fact that there is deficiency of skilled manpower, poor cold storage facilities, inefficient post-harvest management and minimal technological interventions.
Deficiency of the skilled manpower: In-spite of market size of US dollar 181 billion, expenditure on food and food products being 21per cent of India’s GDP and more than 31per cent share of wallet by consumers, there is resultant apprehension about the emergency emerging skill shortages due to mismatch between the demand for specific skills and available supply. Shortage of skilled, Semi- skilled and unskilled workers has emerged as a critical factor impacting the competitiveness of Indian food industry. Efficient man-power is one such critical element to improve to foster the growth. As the food industry advances and adopts various levels of automation the demand of skilled manpower will increase phenomenally. Hence if, the Indian food industry must achieve projected growth target set and become globally competitive, the need to develop and train the human resource efficiently would be essential.

When an element burns in a flame it emits radiation characteristic of its identity. Flame photometry is the determination of an element in solution by measurement of emission of light by atoms of the element in flame. Initial tests for identification of a few elements by flame tests are well known. Na burns with yellow flame, K with lilac flame, Ca, with red flame, Cu, with green flame etc. Emission of characteristic radiation by an element and correlation of emission intensity with the concentration of that element form the basis for flame photometry.

The sample to be analyzed is prepared in solution and sprayed under controlled conditions into a flame. The light from the flame enters a monochromator to isolate the desired region of the spectrum. A photocell and an amplifier measure the intensity of the isolated radiation. After proper calibration of the photometer with solutions of known composition and concentration, it is possible to correlate the intensity of a given spectral line with the unknown concentration of that element. A calibration curve prepared using known concentrations is useful. Internal standards and addition of known concentration of sample to be quantified are more useful.

Silage is the green material produced by controlled anaerobic fermentation of the green succulent fodder crop retaining its moisture content. The process of preparing silage is known as Ensiling and the pit in which silage is prepared is called silo.

Crops suitable for silage making
The fundamental behind the conservation of fodder as silage is the acidic condition, which is produced by the anaerobic fermentation of carbohydrates rich fodder. Thus the necessity of the fodder crop being used for silage preparation is the presence of high amount of fermentable carbohydrates and the natural carbohydrate rich crops are the cereal crops like maize, jowar or bajra and grasses or their combination in 3:1 with leguminous crops. Otherwise high moisture leguminous crop after wilting in combination of molasses may be 
used.
