Nymphs and adults of the AK grass hopper feed on papaya leaves and tender bark.  Maximum damage is done during July-August in North India.

Genetic architecture of a population is the result of prolonged natural selection. The populations which exist in diverse environments might have been strongly diversified genetically. So, it is necessary to understand the extent and rates of genetic divergence existing between the diversified forms or types. Genetic diversity must be sufficient enough to justify breeding effort. Genetic diversity may be available in improved germplasm or it may exist only in genetically inferior stocks. The availability of statistical tools to quantitatively measure the genetic divergence between two or more populations and the relative contribution of individual characters to the total divergence have permitted to trace the evolutionary patterns in some crops such as rice and tobacco and in choosing the parents for hybridization in crop plants (Rao, 1958; Blackith, 1960; Morishima and Oka, 1960; Murthy et al.,1962). Among the several statistical methods developed for measuring the divergence between population, multivariate analysis (D² statistic) developed by Mahalanobis in 1936, has been found to be potent tool.

Mahalanobis D² analysis is an effective tool in quantifying the degree of divergence at genetic level and provides a quantitative measures of the association between geographic and genetic diversity based on generalized distance.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is present in almost all fresh fruits and vegetables in varying quantities ranging from 0.02 to 1.0 mg per g fresh weight. It is most abundantly found in bittergourd and berries.

The method for estimation of ascorbic acid is given here below as described by Albrecht (1993). It is an easy and simple method based on titration technique.

The discovery and use of synthetic chemicals has contributed greatly to the increase of food production industry by controlling pest and diseases. Biocontrol agents exhibit antagonistic activity against plant pathogens and activate resistance mechanisms in the host despite improving plant growth. In agricultural soils the nutritional condition is depleted hence beneficial microbes decrease and increase the pathogenic microbes. To ensure the sustained availability of biocontrol agents mass production technique and formulation development protocols has to be standardized which also increases the shelf life of the formulation. Though these agents have a very good potential in the management of Pest and Diseases it can not be used as cell suspension under field conditions. The cell suspensions of these biocontrol agents should be immobilized in certain carriers and should be prepared as formulations. The organic carriers used for formulation development include peat, turf, talc, lignite, kaolinite, pyrophylite, zeolite, alginate, pressmud, sawdust, vermiculate, etc.

Introduction

For proper plant growth, the soil should have a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, though there are certain plants which can grow satisfactorily at low pH, for example, tea, and at high pH, for example, sugar beet. In India, acid soils are located mostly in Eastern, Southern and South Central parts though some soils, at higher elevations, in North India are acidic.

In order to achieve maximum yield and sustained productivity through efficient soil management practices, it is essential to lime an acid soil, as it has considerable influence on soil environment, besides correcting soil acidity.

Several methods have been proposed to determine the lime requirement of acidic soils, to raise the pH around 6.5. The soil pH value alone, however, is not a good criterion for lime recommendation, because of variations in the exchange acidity of soil, and the nature of crops which may not require as high as this pH to produce maximum yield. Of these various methods proposed, the Shoemaker / SMP method was found satisfactory.

The recent trend of liming is to use it as a fertilizer rather than as amendment so as not to disturb heavily the natural environment while ensuring sustained productivity.

It is commonly known as mango and fig borer. The adults of this pest bear long serrated antennae and are also called as longicorn beetles. The adults get attracted to light. The female cuts the tree bark and lays eggs singly into these cuts, laying a total of up to 200 eggs. On hatching the larvae start to tunnel into the sapwood of the trunk or branches. Ruminitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the rumen wall, primarily caused by disruptions in the rumen’s microbial environment and metabolic processes. Causes
1. High-starch diets: Diets rich in grains and low in fibre promote rapid fermentation, leading to an overproduction of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) m and lactic acid, lowering rumen pH (rumen acidosis).
2. Low-fibre diets: Insufficient fibre intake reduces chewing and saliva production, which are essential for buffering rumen acidity.
3. Inconsistent feeding practices: Irregular feeding schedules or abrupt dietary changes disrupt microbial populations in the rumen.
4. Other factors: Overfeeding of easily fermentable feeds (e.g., silage or molasses), Stress or illness reducing feed intake and altering rumen function.

Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) uses an inductively coupled plasma to produce excited atoms and ions that emit electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths characteristic of a particular element. A plasma is a neutral gas containing a good number of positive and negative ions or free electrons. A plasma can only be created. A combustion flame is one example of a plasma. Introduction

Sodic (Alkali) and Saline-Sodic soils are characterized by the presence of large amounts of sodium, as high as 15% or more, on their exchange complex. As a result of this, the pH of soils increases beyond 8.0, causing nutritional imbalances, elimination of soil organic matter, deterioration of soil physical condition, etc., besides affecting the soil biotic community. Gypsum (CaSO₄. 2H₂O) is commonly used for the management of such soils, when applied in right amounts and size.

Principle

A given weight of soil is equilibrated with a known amount of Ca solution, and the amount of Ca, left in the solution is determined by EDTA titration. The difference between the amount of Ca added and the Ca left in the solution, gives the amount of Ca exchanged. In practice, gypsum of about 1/3 of the value, obtained by this method, is satisfactory in most cases.

8.1 Recommendations

The specific recommendation for NAZ in promoting CA are

• Since fragmentation has come out as a barrier to CA, the community based CA entrepreneurship will be more successful to make CA ecologically resilient, economically viable and socially adoptable.
• Crop residues are viable source for soil nutrients including organic carbon replenishment, but unfortunately left over crop residues are either burnt out or wrongly used. So, a community bank on crop residues in the form of bio-parks on a commercial basis can be a dependable source of organic manure for being blended into the farm soil. Auditing on volume of disposable CR and its proper application can help in making operating farm more resilient and productive.
• Since CA farmers have to go through a minimum gestation period and they are expected to contribute to the ecological resilience and carbon sequestration, economic incentives must be extended for their productive as well as stewardship function. A policy promulgation is the need of the hour to support their contribution
• Since fragmentation of holding poses a potential threat to resource energy biodiversity and economic conservation, so a strong land and farm policy needs to be there to abate disintegration and fragmentation of holding

1. Calibration of Milk Butyrometer

Introduction

Butyrometer is used for determination of fat for milk and milk products by Gerber method. The milk butyrometer is a graduated vessel, which are designed in such a way that the internal volume of each unit is 0.125 ml which is corresponding to 1 percent fat. Sometimes due to manufacturer’s error, the volume of one unit of milk butyrometer is not exactly equal to 0.125 which leads to subsequent error in results in milk fat.
