Introduction

A complete neurological examination is warranted whenever an equine patient displays signs consistent with neurological disorder or to establish that the horse is neurologically normal (e.g., pre-purchase examination). Neurological examination of equine patient is challenging due to their large size, which prevents veterinarian from using many of the tests used for small animals. The key to a successful neurologic examination is to do the examination in a consistent and organized fashion. It is important to develop a routine, then do it the same way each time. This approach ensures that some parts of the examination are not forgotten and it also increases the consistency of the exam as you examine more number of equine patients. A standardized examination form is a valuable aid in this and can be concise. The goals of the neurologic examination are to determine whether disease of the nervous system exists, to localize the lesion to a particular area of the nervous system, and to describe and record the responses as a baseline for future evaluations. In this paper, a complete neurological examination is described with special emphasis on field conditions.

Introduction

Water is the most abundant compound in the body, and most of life’s essential processes take place in this aqueous environment. Although there is substantial variation, the total body water (TBW) of most domestic animals is approximately 60% of body weight (0.60 l/kg).Electrolytes are substances that exist as positive or negative charged particles in aqueous solution. The positively charged particles are “cations,” and the negatively charged particles are “anions”. The osmotic properties of a solute in solution are related to the number of particles in solution and not to its weight or its charge. One osmole of a non-dissociable substance is equal to its molecular weight in grams. One osmole of any substance that dissociates in solution into two or more particles is equal to the molecular weight in grams divided by the number of particles into which each molecule dissociates. Osmolarity is defined as the number of osmoles per l of final solution, whereas osmolality is the number of osmoles per kilogram of water. Although the expressions are similar, osmolality more correctly describes the osmotic properties as measured in the clinical laboratory.

India is home to largest milch animal population, totalling around 100 million cattle and buffalo (out of total population of 300 million) spread over 6.5 million census villages. India is the largest milk producer with CAGR of 4.5%, likely to go up to 5%, which is likely to create around 20 million jobs every year. The most significant factor is that dairy industry is likely to exceed IT industry in employment generation. In year 2018, India produced 146 million tonnes of milk contributing 26% of the agriculture GDP.

But the foundation of dairy industry is economically vulnerable as per animal productivity and fertility are very low leading to meagre profits and frequent demands to enhance procurement price. National schemes like Operation Flood, National Dairy Plan-I and National Dairy Plan II, largely focussed on milk collection, processing, distribution and organising farmers but the animal component has been neglected. Enhancing per animal productivity by empowering farmers to scientific management and breeding to achieve genetic improvement needs urgent attention. Although numerous technologies to improve health and genetics are available but the single most important gap is failure to deliver these to farmers. Unlike western world, India has not been able to develop modern veterinary service delivery models. In order to cater to breeding and health services of cattle and buffalo (300 million in numbers) and also pet animals in rural areas and small towns, huge manpower and infrastructure will be required.

Last few decades have witnessed an increasing number of pets attending clinics/hospitals for cardiac care because of changed life style of owners as well as pets, more awareness of the owners and an increase in number of veterinary medical specialist with better diagnostic facilities. Cardiac failure and cardiac arrest are the two important outcome of cardiac diseases with variable treatment result. Heart functioning is affected not only in primary diseases of heart but also in diseases of organs other than the heart. Without correct diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities, treatment may be futile with a fatal outcome. Nowadays diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities is facilitated with the aid of modern diagnostic technology.

The prevalence of skin diseases in dogs is high throughout the world. Skin diseases are one of the main clinical complaint with which dogs and cats are presented at clinics. Skin diseases are numerous and have wide range of underlying etiology ranging from non-specific cause, infections (bacterial, viral, fungal. yeast), hormonal, nutritional to immunological causes. Most of the skin diseases are clinically manifested with focal or diffuse alopecia, itching, papules, pustules, erythema, scaling, scabs, lumps, unpleasant smell, rashes, urticarial plaques, dandruff, hot spots or excessive licking (Figure62) making the straight forward diagnosis a difficult task especially in dogs and cats with chronic dermatological disease.

Diseases of gastro-intestinal tract are very common in dogs and cats. Gastro intestinal tract starts from mouth to anus. The first step in making diagnosis of gastro-intestinal disease is to localize the problem. Whether it is buccal cavity, esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Cursory history for seemingly simple complaint like vomiting, anorexia or loose feces may be unrewarding because gastrointestinal diseases may be primary (concerning with only gastro intestinal tract and its functions) or secondary (due to underlying disease/ disorder of organs other than gastro-intestinal tract). Therefore, for ascertaining the cause of gastrointestinal signs (anorexia, nausea, vomiting, regurgitation, constipation, loose feces, bloody feces), a thorough examination of all body systems is more logical. As with other body systems, a comprehensive systematic approach is needed for diagnosing diseases of gastro-intestinal tract also.

The term “Hepatology” is derived from the Greek words “hepatikos” and “logia” meaning liver and study respectively. It is the branch of medicine dealing with the study of structure, function, diseases and abnormalities of the liver, gall bladder, and biliary tree. Liver/hepatic diseases in companion pets vary from multifactorial hepatitis (acute and chronic), cirrhosis, portosystemic shunt, copper storage disease, hepatic lipidosis, and hepatic neoplasm to fulminant hepatic failure. The etiology of liver diseases also varies from infection, auto-immune, metabolic to genetic factors. The hepatic disorders are quite common in canines and felines. Moreover, the diagnosis of liver malfunctioning is loosely given in pet practice without any supportive evidence.

Nephrology

Nephritis and renal calculi are the two major problems leading to renal failure in canine and feline nephrology. Chronic renal failure may occur at any age but it is more common in geriatric dogs. Congenital renal diseases may also lead to renal failure at any age. Chronic renal disease or chronic renal failure is a progressive deteriorating condition as compensatory mechanism (glomerular hypertension and hyper filtration) further deteriorate the condition. Hence chronic renal disease remains lifelong. For quality life, an early diagnosis of renal failure is very important. The following techniques are used to diagnose chronic renal failure.

Its function may be affected with wide range of etiologies ranging from trauma, local and systemic infections, metabolic diseases to vision defects warranting an early and accurate diagnosis employing complete history, detailed ocular examination and or specialized diagnostic techniques such as Schirmer Tear Test (STT), Fluorescence Test, Ophthalmoscopy, Tonometry, Pachymetry, Retinoscopy and Gonioscopy etc.

Otology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the ear and its diseases. Ear diseases in canines have multiple etiology varying from allergies (food or environmental), ectoparasites, infections (bacteria, malassazia, fungus), endocrine disorders, immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases), foreign material, neoplasms to keratinization disorders. For rational management, correct diagnosis is a pre-requisite. Diagnostic techniques in otology include history, clinical examination including ear canal palpation and visual inspection of ears, imaging (otoscopy, radiography, CT scan, MRI, and ultrasonography) and cytological evaluation of otic contents/ discharge.

9.1. Handling

Rabbits must be handled very carefully. Although they are generally docile they are apt to struggle when picked up, with potentially harmful consequences. All rabbits are prone to vertebral fractures, and this risk is greatest in hutch rabbits or in those on an unbalanced diet that may have concurrent osteoporosis. It is extremely important to support the back and hindquarters whenever a rabbit is handled.
 
A rabbit should never be picked up by the ears. It can be lifted gently by the scruff of the neck with one hand whilst the other hand supports its bottom (Fig. 9.1), or alternatively lifted with one hand under the chest, and one supporting its hindquarters (Fig. 9.2). The rabbit should be carried against the body to minimize struggling. It is advisable to place the rabbit’s carrying box on the floor so that if it does jump as it is picked up it does not hurt itself. Similarly it is usually easier to return the rabbit to the box on the floor at the end of the examination.

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It not only defends the body but also assists in the maintenance of homeostasis including water conservation and in body temperature conservation through insulation and in heat loss through perspiration. Pain and temperature extremes are recognized through sensory nerves of the skin. The skin also provides protection against physical injuries to some level, supports hair growth and offers some defence against microbial invasion. Skin diseases are multifactorial in etiology. But the response of skin to varying etiological stimulus is limited leading to same clinical manifestations in different skin diseases. Therefore, a comprehensive clinical examination is necessary for accurate diagnosis of the disease. Clinical Examination The clinical examination of skin diseases involves a systemic approach including history, physical examination and diagnostic testing. History

Clinical dermatological examination provides the foundation for recognizing and investigating skin disorders in veterinary patients. This chapter focuses on systematic assessment of skin lesions, their morphology, distribution and associated changes. Examination includes identification of papules, pustules, crusts, alopecia, lichenification and other lesions. Diagnostic procedures such as skin scraping, acetate tape impression, hair plucking for trichography, Wood's lamp examination and impression smears help determine underlying causes. Microscopic examination assists in detecting mites and other organisms. Careful documentation of lesion distribution and characteristics helps differentiate infectious, parasitic and other dermatological conditions and supports selection of appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The skin is the largest organ of the body that plays an important role in defending the body against minor physical injuries, providing some defense against microbial invasion, maintenance of homeostasis, water conservation, temperature conservation, supporting hair growth and heat loss. Changes in the secretion of sebaceous glands lead to compromised defence. Abnormalities of the skin may arise from specific skin disease or by the poor general health status. Therefore, a detailed clinical examination of the animal as a whole and of its skin in particular, is an essential part of the process of diagnosis. The skin has three main layers starting from outside as the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutis. The epidermis consists largely of epithelial cells and pigment. The dermis is a connective tissue layer containing blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sebaceous and sweat glands. The inner most subcutis contains fibrous and fatty tissues that provides insulation and support. In healthy animals, the skin has considerable elasticity. It reduces in dehydration and inflammation / injury to skin. General clinical examination should be carried out first as a routine followed by special examination

Birds are extremely vulnerable to handling (even injection related events) stress and hence, chemically immobilize for a detailed clinical examination or intensive sampling procedures).

The purpose of the clinical examination is to identify the clinical abnormalities that are present and the risk factors that determine the occurrence of the disease in the individual or population. The focal point of any investigation of animal disease is the making of diagnosis and the critical part in making that decision is the clinical examination of the animal or group of animals. Without a proficient clinical examination and an accurate diagnosis it is unlikely that the treatment, control, prognosis and welfare of animals will be optimized.  The level of examination set out is sufficient to enable the clinician to determine the nature of the abnormality and the system involved.

In avian medicine, because clinical signs in birds can be vague, veterinarians must rely on additional clinical tests to accurately diagnose and treat conditions. Clinical hematology is qualitative and quantitative assessment of blood and other blood component for the treatment of clinical patient. In comparison to mammals, bird’s erythrocytes are oval and nucleated cells, nucleated thrombocytes, heterophiles instead of neutrophils. RBCs of birds have relatively short life span and regenerate more quickly than mammals. The preferred vein for blood collection in birds varies with the species. In most species the wing veins is preferred site. Both EDTA and heparin have been used in avian clinical haematology as anticoagulant. The average blood volume of most birds is approximately 10% body weight. Avian plasma samples frequently are yellow due to carotenoid pigments, not bilirubin. Uric acid is the major nitrogenous waste product of birds it is relatively inert and substantially less toxic than ammonia or urea. Both BUN and creatinine levels are normally low in birds and may be below the minimum detectable limit of the assays in the laboratory. It may be useful to evaluate BUN and uric acid together to differentiate among dehydration, postprandial effects and renal pathology.

Introduction
Heart failure can develop as a complication of almost all congenital and acquired cardiac diseases in dogs and cats. Cardiac disease is a significant global health concern, impacting both humans and domestic animals, particularly dogs. In the animal kingdom, the cardiovascular system consists of essential components, including the heart, veins, arteries, and capillary beds. Its proper function depends on complex mechanisms, such
as the atrioventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid) and the semilunar valves (aortic and pulmonic), which ensure that blood flows in only one direction through the heart. The activity of the cardiovascular system, including heart contraction rates and strengths, as well as blood vessel diameter adjustments, is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (both sympathetic and parasympathetic branches) and various hormones.
The strength of ventricular contractions is influenced by several factors, primarily enddiastolic volume (preload) and myocardial contractility (inotropy). Preload is the amount of blood in the ventricles just before they contract, while contractility refers to the ability of the heart muscle fibers to contract. Preload is determined by the difference between the end-diastolic pressure in the ventricle and the pressure in the pleural space, adjusted for the
stiffness of the ventricular myocardium. This pressure is influenced by the ratio of blood volume to the heart muscle’s compliance. Low-pressure volume receptors in the heart and large veins primarily regulate preload. When these receptors detect increased blood volume or vein distension, they trigger responses such as increased urine production and vein dilation, which help reduce blood volume and lower venous pressures. The digestive tract of monogastric animals consists of several organs that work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and expel waste. The primary components include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and associated glands such as the salivary glands, liver, and pancreas.
The digestive process begins in the mouth, where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and mixed with saliva, which contains enzymes like amylase to initiate the breakdown of carbohydrates. The bolus of food is then transported through the esophagus to the stomach via coordinated muscular contractions known as peristalsis. In the stomach, food is mixed with gastric secretions, including hydrochloric acid (HCl) and digestive enzymes like pepsin, which help break down proteins. The stomach’s acidic environment also plays a critical role in killing pathogens and aiding the digestion of certain nutrients, such as vitamin B12. The stomach of monogastric animals differs from that of ruminants, as it does not possess multiple compartments for fermentation but rather relies on enzymatic digestion.
The chyme (partially digested food) passes into the small intestine, where most digestion and nutrient absorption occur. The small intestine is composed of three segments-the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum-each with specialized functions. Enzymes secreted by the pancreas and bile from the liver facilitate the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The intestinal lining, with its villi and microvilli, maximizes the surface area for nutrient absorption.

Introduction
In cattle, the digestive system consists of four primary compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, followed by the small and large intestines. The rumen plays a crucial role as a fermentation chamber, maintaining anaerobic conditions and ensuring thorough mixing, as well as regulating temperature and pH levels. Food, which is frequently re-chewed, enters the rumen through the esophagus, where fermentation occurs.
The byproducts of fermentation are either absorbed within the rumen or moved on for further digestion and absorption in other parts of the digestive system. Simple indigestion in ruminants is a temporary disruption in gastrointestinal function, usually caused by a sudden change in the quality or quantity of their diet. Consuming large amounts of indigestible feed can impair rumen function for 24 to 48 hours after ingestion, as the accumulation of this feed can physically disrupt ruminal activity. Additionally, the breakdown of proteins in the rumen can produce toxic substances such as amides and amines, including histamine. This condition can lead to a significant drop in milk production due to a marked reduction in the production of volatile fatty acids in a hypotonic reticulorumen. Ruminal impaction is a condition seen in ruminants like cows, sheep,and goats, where the  rumen’s contents become compacted, obstructing their movement through the digestive tract. This condition can arise from various causes, including the ingestion of plastic waste, grazing habits, mineral deficiencies, negative energy balance, urbanization, inadequate water intake, low-fiber or high-grain diets, changes in feed or grazing patterns, and stress. The accumulation of foreign material can block fermentation, interfere with the mixing of rumen contents, and disrupt the rumen’s microflora, leading to indigestion. Acute ruminal acidosis is often caused by the sudden intake of large amounts of carbohydrate-rich feed, particularly grains. Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) occurs in dairy cattle and is characterized by disrupted ruminal fermentation. It typically results from feeding large amounts of concentrates with insufficient fiber, a practice often used to boost milk production during early lactation. This imbalance in diet can disturb rumen pH and microbial populations, leading to various metabolic and digestive problems. Chronic ruminal acidosis can lead to complications such as rumenitis, which is inflammation of the rumen, and laminitis, a painful condition affecting the hooves. Alkaline indigestion, also known as ruminal alkalosis, occurs when the pH of ruminal fluid rises above 7.5.

Visual perception, eyesight, sight, or vision is the ability to interpret the surrounding environment using light in the visible spectrum reflected by the objects in the environment. The eyes are the sensory organs that are extension of the brain; they receive visual information from the environment and transmit them to the visual sensory area of the brain for interpretation.
The pineal and para-pineal glands are photoreceptive in non-mammalian vertebrates. Birds have photoactive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons within the paraventricular organ that respond to light in the absence of input from the eyes or neurotransmitters.
Accessory Structure of the Eye
Eyelids - (Palpebrae) The free margins of the eyelids form the palpebral fissure. The edges where the upper and lower eyelids meet are called the lateral and medial canthus. The palpebral margins are lined by eyelashes. The eyelids are supported internally by sheets of connective tissue that form the tarsal plate.

Each wave begins when the dominant follicle in the previous wave gains maximal size, at which time numerous small follicles begin a period of rapid growth. From this group of follicles, one follicle is allowed to grow to a much larger size than the others. This large follicle is called the dominant follicle, because it has the ability to regulate and restrict the growth of the smaller follicles. A few days after reaching maximum size, the dominant follicle begins to degenerate and die.

ABSTRACT

Astudy was conducted to establish the regeneration capacity of pseudobulb segments of a Dendrobium hybrid orchid (D. nobile L. x D. chrysotoxum L.) in vitro on full strength (MS) and half strength (½ MS) Murashige and Skoog medium. Pseudobulb segments having 0.3-0.5 cm length cut from the in vitro maintained hybrid orchid were inoculated on both media supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of NAA, BAP and Kn. On MS medium the pseudobulb segments failed to respond, however, in ½ MS medium the explants responded well. Responding explants were maximum (35%) on the medium ½MS + 0.1 mgl^-1 NAA + 0.5 mgl^-1 BAP. An average of two (2) shoot buds per explant were regenerated on ½ MS + 2.0 mgl^-1Kn and ½ MS + 0.1 mgl^-1 NAA + 1.0 mgl^-1 BAP. The regenerated plantlets grew healthily on subculture after separation from the pseudobulb segments.

Clonal crops belong to at least 34 families including herbs, shrubs, trees and vines. Clonal crop improvement dates back to 10,000 years ago. The diversity of clonal crops and their wild relatives are very significant but not yet fully understood and exploited. Many crops represent combination of sexual and clonal reproduction.
