Need of an average

Through frequency distribution are the condensed form of raw data, but these are not sufficient for making comparison between two or more data. Therefore further condensation of frequency distribution into a single figure is made. This single f igure is always representative of the frequency distribution and such a figure is known as average.

Measure of Central Tendency

According to Croxten and Cowden “An average is a single value within the range of the data that is used to represent all the values in the series”. A statistical measure used for representing the centre of central value of a set of observations is known as “Measure of Central Tendency”. It is also called as “Measure of f irst order”.

Characteristics of an ideal Measure of Central Tendency

An ideal measure of central tendency should possess the following properties:

1) It should be rigidly defined i.e. it has a fixed and finite value

2) It should be easy to understand 3) It should be easy to calculate

4) Its calculation should be based on all the observations

5) It should be capable for further algebraic treatment

6) It should not be affected by extreme values of the observations

7) It should be least affected by fluctuations of sampling

Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for most animals, playing a critical role in sustaining metabolic processes, maintaining body temperature, and supporting physical activity. In ruminants, carbohydrates are fermented in the rumen to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) such as acetate, propionate and butyrate, which serve as energy substrates.
Health: Adequate carbohydrate intake prevents energy deficits, which can lead to ketosis, fatty liver, or hypoglycemia, particularly in lactating animals. Production: Energy from carbohydrates drives milk production in dairy animals and growth in meat-producing species.
Reproduction: Insufficient carbohydrate availability can delay puberty, impair estrus cycles, and reduce fertility. Immunity: Energy deficits weaken immune responses, increasing susceptibility to infections.

The discussion on the methodology has been made to understand the concept, methods and techniques, which were utilized to design the study, collect the information, analyze the data and interpret the findings for revelation of truth in hand formulation of theories. This chapter deals with the research methodology that had been adopted for the purpose of the present study. The entire discussion has been made under the following heads:

• Statistical tools used for analysis of data.
The research work was based in a few districts of Manipur, a small state in the North East India. The research was done in conjunction with the farmers living in the study area and was participatory in nature. This chapter presents the sampling design, nature and method of data collection and analytical tools being applied in attaining the objectives of the study.

1. Introduction

Intellectual property is a term referring to creations of the intellect for which a monopoly is assigned to designated owners by law. While intellectual property law has evolved over centuries, it was not until the 19^th century that the term Intellectual Property began to be used, and not until the late 20^th century that it became commonplace in the majority of the world.

Agriculture (including horticulture) and forestry are the two most important sectors in the land use system of India covering know 46.1% (141.2 m ha) and 22.2% (69.02 m ha), respectively of total geographic area of the country. Intellectual Property Right (IPR) was of limited significance in cultivation and improvement of agricultural, horticultural and forest crops and aggregation of these three sections comprises the Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs). IPRs were not applied to plants in earlier days. PGRs are the foundation for the development of food and nutritionally secured nation. Food is the foremost important to sustain life and livelihood followed by shelter and cloth. Thus, the slogan of 3Fs may be modified as, “Food, Frame (shelter) and Fibre (cloth)” instead of Food, Fodder and Fire-wood. All these 3Fs we get from PGRs.

According to “Artha-sastra”, first book on Governance, Agriculture, cattle breeding and trade, world?s first meteorological Instrument, a “Rain Gauge”, apparently a circular vessel with 20 fingers equivalent width and 8 fingers equivalent depth were installed by Kautilya (Chanakya) during 350-281BC throughout the Mauryan empire (Rainfall measurement:: 1 adhaka = 12mm, I drona = 40 to 50 mm). He is the first person to identify country?s economy depends on Rainfall. Good yield of rain-fed crop requires rainfall of 16 dronas was essential and 4 dronas rainfall is sufficient, also identified rainy season July to December wherein 2/3 annual rainfall receives during Mid-August to October end, now as per IMD norms Southwest monsoon season. He also identified his empire consists of FOUR CLIMATIC zones Tundra/Tropical Rain forest/Semiarid and Arid zones. With the modern seafarers, Columbus (1451-1506) Americus Vespucius (1454-1512) Italian Explorers, James Cook (1728-1779), British Explorer, Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1529), Vasco-de-gama (14601524) Portuguese Explorer and other Navigators of 15th to 18th Century faced severe cyclonic storm and rough weather over high sea felt the need of Meteorological and Navigational equipments. Inventions of modern day instruments started. For Navigators, Quadrant, Mariners Campus (dry), Sand glasses for time measurement (800-900AD) and accurate mechanical Watch (1759) were invented. From the term “NAVAGATHI”, modern term of “NAVIGATION” born. With the introduction of Hot air balloon flight in 18th Century, Air flights (after 1903) our knowledge of weather of upper levels of the atmosphere – knowledge of heights of standard pressure altitudes, Upper Air Temperature, Humidity, Wind direction and speed upto Troposphere. Radio-sonde ascents were commenced in 1936. Radars and Satellite images further increased knowledge about weather and assisting for the preparation of weather inferences useful for Seafarers, flight operators and General Public, Agriculturists, Live-stock managements, national level planners, trade and economists.

Medicines used for controlling insect pests are known as Pesicides which have assumed great importance in today’s high yielding and intensive agricultural system as well as public health programme, all over the world. The term pesticide is an all-inclusive word meaning killer of pests and includes substances used for controlling, preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest.

1. INTRODUCTION

Amongst the common fermentations employed in food are alcoholic, lactic acid and acetic acid. Lactic acid fermentation is a potent tool of biopreservation of foods by the use of biological means i.e. microorganisms or their metabolites having antimicrobial action. It deals with the extension of storage life and increased safety of edible products by employing natural microflora or their antimicrobial products such as in food fermentation. Though many problems in food processing and microbiological safety of food have diminished, yet these are certainly not eliminated altogether. These include the likelihood of food-related illness and product spoilage in industrialized countries. The increasing consumption of pre-cooked food, prone to temperature abuse, are among the main causes of this scenario. The bacterial pathogens that account for many of these foodborne illness cases include Salmonella, Compylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli 0157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Clostridium botulinum. Until now, approaches to seek improved food safety had relied heavily to find out more efficient chemical preservatives or on the application of more drastic physical treatments (e.g. high temperatures) of food processing. Nevertheless, these types of solutions do have some drawbacks also: the proven toxicity of some of the commonest used chemical preservatives (e.g. nitrites), the alteration of the sensory and nutritional properties of foods (thermal processing) especially recent consumer trends in purchasing and consumption, with demands for safe but minimally processed products without additives.

Research methodology is a systematic approach to solve any research problem and arrive at a conclusion that adds to the already existing fund of knowledge. The research methodology seeks to define the solution by adopting appropriate research techniques. They are generally applied during the initial stage of the study to delineate and outline the rationale for the chosen methods and their functionality and effectiveness towards achieving a decided objective. Research methodologies are an organized approach to accomplish the selected objectives. The research methodology comprises different techniques used during the experiment with surveys, tests, etc.

Introduction 
The preceding chapter elucidated the concepts of potential and achievable crop production, highlighting the significant gap that often exists between a crop‘s theoretical maximum yield and what is realized in the field. While genetic potential and optimal climatic conditions define the upper limits, the vast majority of agricultural systems globally operate under less-than-ideal circumstances. Among the most pervasive and impactful constraints on crop productivity are moisture (water) and nutrient limitations. These two factors, either individually or in complex interaction, are frequently the primary drivers of the yield gap, preventing crops from expressing their full genetic potential and significantly impacting farm profitability and regional food security. Water, as the universal solvent and a direct participant in photosynthesis and countless metabolic processes, is indispensable for plant life. However, its availability in agricultural systems is highly variable and often insufficient. From the rainfed fields dependent on increasingly erratic rainfall patterns to irrigated lands facing dwindling water resources, moisture stress – encompassing both drought and, paradoxically, waterlogging – poses an immense challenge. Drought alone accounts for a substantial portion of global crop losses, directly affecting plant physiological functions, growth, and ultimately, yield. Conversely, excessive moisture can lead to anaerobic soil conditions, nutrient leaching, and root damage, equally debilitating for crop performance. Parallel to moisture, the availability and judicious management of essential plant nutrients are foundational to productive agriculture. Plants require a suite of macro- and micronutrients for healthy growth, enzymatic activity, and the synthesis of biomass. Soils, over time and with continuous cropping, often become depleted of these vital elements, necessitating external application through fertilizers or the enhancement of natural nutrient cycling processes. In applied mathematics the solution of problem generally consists of numbers which satisfy some kind of equation which are generally specified by numbers. But in practice it is found that these equations not always possible to express numerically or in exact decimal representative of the solution. Numerical methods are very important tools to provide practical methods for calculating the solutions of applied mathematics to a desired degree of accuracy. The wide use of electronic computers for solving problems in the fields of engineering, scientific, industry etc that further enhanced the scope of numerical methods.

The calculus of finite differences deals with the changes in the values of the function (dependent variable) due to changes in the independent variables. Again through this the relation of the values of the function is studied whenever the independent variable changes by finite jumps whether equal or unequal.

The word protein was first coined in 1838 to emphasize the importance of this class of molecules. The word is derived from the Greek word proteios which means “of the first - rank”. Proteins are polymers/macro molecules made up of several amino acids. When there are more than 50 amino acids in a chain, the polypeptide is normally called a protein. Each protein in the cells of living beings has a unique sequence of amino acids that determines its biological function. The proteins are folded into specific defined structures, which are maintained by large number of relatively weak bonds. Landscape Gardening

Landscape gardening is an aesthetic branch of Horticulture which deals with planting of ornamental plants in such a way that it creates a picturesque effect. According to Chambers’ dictionary, the definition of landscape is the appearance of that portion of land which the eye can view at once and landscape gardening is the art of laying grounds so as to produce the effect of a picturesque landscape. Landscape gardening can be defined as the decoration of a tract of land with plants and other garden materials so as to produce a picturesque and naturalistic effect in a limited space. According to Bailey, Landscape gardening is the application of garden forms, methods and materials to the improvements of the landscape and the landscape in this connection is any area large or small on which it is desirable to develop a view or design. So landscape may or may not include plants.

Landscape gardening can also be defined as the beautification of a tract of land having a house or other object of interest on it. It is done with a view to create a natural scene by the planting of lawn, trees and shrubs. Landscape gardening is both an art and science of the establishment of a ground in such a way that it gives an effect of a natural landscape. It can be also defined as the imitation of nature in the garden. It can also be defined as improving of total living environment for the people. In light of all the foregoing definition landscape gardening can be defined more appropriately as art of creating gardens, parks and other green areas.

Landscape design seeks to create balance between living and natural environments in order to derive the greatest use and enjoyment from outdoor space. A landscape to a landscape designer is like a slab of marble to a sculptor or the insides of a home to an interior decorator; a landscape is the canvass on which the landscape designer crafts his or her masterpiece. Since the landscape gardening is the making pictures on the ground with plant and other material, landscape designer should be proficient in art, ornamental gardening, ecology and physiology. He should be an architect and engineer to appreciate the relationship between plant form, colours and buildings.

The primary target of genomics is identification and characterization of genes and gene products. Starting point of genomics may be a whole genome sequence, from which gene and protein structures can be predicted by computational and bioinformatics approaches (in silico genomics), or genes can be identified step by step starting from identification of a phenotype by induction and detection of mutation, construction of a genetic map demarkating the position of the character, physical location, identification of the gene, cloning and characterization of the gene or genome sequence by sequencing followed by expression analysis to correlate the phenotypic expression (in vivo genomics). Alternatively, genes can be identified by developing knockout mutants by random or site directed disruption of a reading frame and then determining the protein product as well as phenotypic expression.
