INTRODUCTION

Wheat has served as a source of staple food to the mankind since times immemorial. The production of wheat in India got a fillip after green revolution. Wheat production in India has increased by over ten times in the past five decades and India has become the second largest wheat producer in the world. Today, wheat plays an increasingly important role in the management of India’s food economy (Gandhi, et al., 2001). Wheat, primarily the winter cereal of Indo-Gangetic plain, is a major contributor to the agricultural economy of India, occupying nearly 25.9 m ha area with 71.8-mt production (Anon., 2003).

India is also second most populous country with one billion people. Demographers indicate that by 2012 India’s population will reach 1.2 billion. With this ever increasing population, there is also an increase in the demand for food grains. Depending on the rate and nature of economic growth and given the population growth rate about 4 or more per cent, annual rate of growth in the demand for wheat is likely to increase in the near future.

Aonla is one of the most important minor fruits of Indian origin, which is predicted to be the ‘fruit of the 21^st century’ even though it existed from time immemorial. It is also called as ‘Indian gooseberry’, ‘amla’, ‘nelli’, ‘amlaki’, ‘amali’, ‘ambala’ and ‘amalakamu’ in different parts of India. ABSTRACT

Supercritical fluid extraction technology specifically employing carbon dioxide as an extracting solvent under supercritical conditions have gained tremendous importance in the commercial applications as well as academic fields. The basic advantage is its operation above pressure and critical temperature. The most convenient things are variations of pressure, temperatures, batch time, flow rate and fractionation of important constituents of essential oils, herbs and petrochemicals. In the recent times most of the researchers have studied the Organic synthesis under supercritical conditions with the improved yield and reaction selectivity. A carbohydrate is a large biological molecules, or macromolecules, consisting of carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O) atoms, usually with a hydrogen : oxygen atom ratio of 2:1 (as in water); in other words, with the empirical formula C_m(H₂O)_n (where m could be different from n). Some exceptions exist; for example, deoxyribose, a sugar component of DNA, has the empirical formula C₅H₁₀O₄. Carbohydrates are technically hydrates of carbon; structurally it is more accurate to view them as polyhydroxy aldehydes and ketones.

The term is most common in biochemistry, where it is a synonym of saccharide. The carbohydrates (saccharides) are divided into four chemical groups: monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. In general, the monosaccharides and disaccharides, which are smaller (lower molecular weight) carbohydrates, are commonly referred to as sugars. While the scientific nomenclature of carbohydrates is complex, the names of the monosaccharides and disaccharides very often end in the suffix -ose. Social civilization of the Neolithic settlements of primitive human communities contributes substantial initiation of cultivation and an approach towards conservation of useful plant species for sustainable food habits. Several archaeological attestations confirm that Homo sapiens at the end of the Paleolithic period had knowledge on many useful plants derived from food gathering techniques. Growth of human populations beyond the size that hardly supports hunting and gathering for food materials may perhaps be the probable reason that forced the Neolithic primitive nomadic communities for settlement and emergence of crude forms of cultivation.

Introduction

Humans have inhabited the earth for nearly 2 million years. For over 90 per cent of this period, the maximum population numbered about 200,000 and the growth rate was only about 0.01 percent per year. The use of fire and the development of tools were the first major changes affecting human population growth which increased to about 5 million individuals about 100,000 years ago. The population remained fluctuating about this mean value for the next 90,000 years depending upon the food supply. Up to this time people were hunterer-gatherers and depended exclusively on the natural ecosystem for their food. Then about 10,000 years ago, humans began to cultivate crops for food. With established agriculture came an increased and stable food supply. This contributed to an increased growth rate of the human population (Dhaliwal et al., 1998).

Omics technologies based on genes and proteins involved in the nematode activities and the plant resistance responses are key factors to novel nematode management. Techniques such as next-generation sequencing of genomes and transcriptomes, RNAi, PIs, MAS, chemo-disruptive peptides and genetic transformation systems with reproducible results must be available within phytonematodes management strategies to enhance crop yields (Abd-Elgawad, 2022). Linking long-read sequencing to the use of high density genetic mapping can also support the detection and characterization of nematode-virulent genes. Progress in computational biology, bioinformatics, and analyzing the omics large-scale data can efficiently boost these techniques to offer accurate recognition of components and pathways engaged in nematode parasitism and plant response. Updated genome-editing devices will serve classical plant breeding and precisely translate how gene actions are linked to phenotypic performances. Yet, these methods must be cautiously used to avoid unwanted effects such as nematode virulence and pleiotropic impacts on qualitative and quantitative crop yields. Definite issues such as those related to the transfer of multiple disease resistance traits, gene original construct, and specificity of the virulent nematodes to the R-gene may arise in particular cases.

Escherichia coli were first isolated by Theodor Escherich in 1885 from the faeces of infants. It was named in honour of the German pediatrician and its major natural habitat (colon). Previously it was also known as Bacillus coli or Bacterium coli (B. coli).

Dairy byproducts constitute an important segment of dairy industry. An important criterion in the economic choice of any process is the efficient utilization of byproduct that is produced along with the main product. The main byproducts of dairy industry are skim milk, buttermilk, whey and ghee residue. Each and every component of milk must be judiciously processed into edible form not only to improve the profitability of dairy industry but also to make best use of the unique nutritional value of the precious milk constituents on one hand, and to prevent environmental pollution, on the other. However, dairy plants, particularly in India, are usually confronted with the problem of byproduct utilization, especially that of whey and ghee residue in economical manner.

Skim milk is a byproduct obtained during the manufacture of cream. It is rich in solids-not-fat content and has high nutritional value. In dairy plants, it is mostly utilized either in standardization for the manufacture of main dairy products or preserved by removing moisture in milk powder form. The skim milk when utilized in either of these two forms or consumed as liquid, is not considered a byproduct. It is regarded as a byproduct only when it is either not economically utilized or utilized for derived byproducts, like casein and other related products, co-precipitates, protein hydrolyzates, etc.

Buttermilk is the byproduct obtained during butter manufacture. Sweet cream buttermilk resembles skim milk in gross chemical composition and is usually admixed with bulk of skim milk for further spray drying or even product manufacture in dairy plants. Desi buttermilk, on the other hand, has long been an important domestic beverage in India. It has high nutritive and therapeutic value. It also finds its way in the preparation of a host of culinary dishes such as kadhi, dhokla and idili. Also a number of federations and private plants sell salted and spiced buttermilk in 200 ml pouches.

In recent years, there has been a considerable interest in the new technological interventions for enhanced livestock productivity in the Indian sub-continent, because of the increased demand for livestock products for human consumption. Bypass nutrients defined as a nutrients fed in such a form that provides an increase in the flow of the nutrient (s) unchanged to the abomasum, yet is available to the more important nutrient (high BV) should escape from the rumen or face minimum ruminal fermentation. The reasons for protecting different nutrients are based on their mode of utilization in the rumen. The literature on the effect of the bypass fat and protein on nutrient utilization, milk production and reproductive performance has been reviewed and presented in following subheads

12.1 Introduction

Man is the most beautiful of all God’s creations and like man, his environment too is beautiful with rivers to quench his thirst with sweet water, atmosphere to provide him oxygen, land and fire to provide him food. Primitive man ate uncooked food and lived in caves. Soon he learnt the use of firewood for cooking of raw meat and provided the first instance of ‘Pollution from food processing’ in history. As man shifted from one place to another, this sort of living never polluted the environment. But as the man ascended the ladder of civiliz ation, his needs grew in arithmeti c progression but corresponding pollution grew in geometric progression. With increase in agriculture produce, a need was felt to preserve the glut production in the form of processed foods giving rise to massive development of food processing industries all over the world. The rapid industrialization of agriculture and horticulture, increased the pollution load many folds especially the biodegradable waste from food industry [41].The wineries and distilleries (distill wine to make brandy) are no exception. Nevertheless, the waste is a precious source of several useful materials as such or after fermentation [1,31,46,86]. Thus, development and environment are two sides of the same coin.

From time immemorial, the biosphere is acting as a sink for all the waste products and recycles them to make good the loss so that every generation finds it the same as one before it. But, of late, this self-cleaning and equilibrium maintenance of biosphere is disastrously disturbed as the waste produced from man’s activities is continuously exceeding the capacity to purify herself. Consequently, our biosphere is becoming more and more poisonous and days are not far away when this planet will become inhabitable.

Distillation, leaching, and extraction

A. Distillation

Distillation is a widely used separation process in various industries, including chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing. It is particularly important in the production of alcoholic beverages, essential oils, and purified water. Distillation works on the principle of exploiting differences in the volatility of components in a liquid mixture to separate them based on their boiling points.

Principles of Distillation

Distillation is a time-tested and versatile separation technique employed across a myriad of industries for separating components of liquid mixtures. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to leverage differences in boiling points among the various constituents of a mixture.

In addition to farm ponds, irrigation to crops can be met from other sources. The main sources can be broadly classified as: (i) Canal irrigation, (ii) Well Irrigation and (iii) Lift irrigation. In arid and semi arid areas, where availability of water is scarce, pitcher irrigation is practiced. These sources of irrigation are briefly mentioned as follows.

13.1 Canal Irrigation

To feed the world population of 8 billion in 2025 AD, it is necessary to bring more area under irrigation because irrigated farms typically get higher yield under provision of irrigation. The food production will have to increase by about 50 percent to feed some two billion more people by 2025 AD, and a large part of that increase needs to come from irrigated agriculture. It is reported that the yield of different crops are generally 2-3 times higher than the crops grown under rainfed conditions. Furthermore, it is possible to raise 2-3 crops round the year under irrigated agriculture whereas hardly a single crop is successfully grown in a year under rainfed condition. It is reported that about 40% of the world’s food production comes from only 17% of the irrigated land of the world (Sivanappan, 2000). Everybody is aware of the fact how the irrigation played a crucial role to make the Green Revolution in India successful. A major part of irrigation is achieved by canal irrigation through different irrigation schemes.

A project that makes use of weir or a barrage for providing irrigation to fields is called as direct irrigation scheme. On the other hand, a storage irrigation scheme makes use of storage reservoir by construction of dams. In order to provide irrigation by both the schemes, it is necessary to have a network of canal systems including main canals, branch canals, distributaries, minors and watercourses. It is imperative to design the canal systems properly for a certain realistic value of peak discharge that must pass through them so as to provide sufficient irrigation to the command areas. These canals have to be aligned and excavated either in alluvial soils or non-alluvial soils; depending upon which they are called alluvial canal or non-alluvial canal.

Genetic resistance is the more efficient and the more environmentally friendly way to protect crops against phytonematodes. Nematode management is complex, hence, the prevention of an initial phytonematode infestation in pathogen-free areas is of fundamental importance. However, after the entry of the nematode into an area, it is virtually impossible to eradicate because it is a soil-dwelling organism. In this regard, the genetic resistance of plants to nematodes is considered one of the most efficient and economically feasible methods to prevent production losses (Matsuo et?al?, 2012). Thus, breeding for nematode resistance is essential in crop management to obtain a high yield and stable production.
