Clinical examination of animals regardless of domestic or wild ones is of utmost significance during the assessment of health status in animals. Prior to collecting samples, it is important to determine the capabilities and submission criteria of the laboratory receiving the samples.

Pea (Pisum sativum L.), the famous plant in which G.H. Mendel worked out Mendel Laws and Genetic Principles, is a noble and aristocratic vegetable. The crop is cultivated for its tender and immature pods for use as vegetable and mature dry pods for use as a pulse. In both cases, seeds are separated and used as vegetable or pulse.

It is a perennial grass about 2 to 3m tall with profuse tillering habit having linear lanceolate leaves. The inflorescence is a highly branched terminal panicle.

Origin: The origin is India

It is a tufted aromatic perennial herb with fibrous roots, erect over 2 m tall, with smooth leaves and bearing a large inflorescence.

Origin: The origin of citronella is Sri Lanka

They are short duration crops. Fodder is available for use in short period, e.g., cowpea and soybean can be harvested within 50-60 days of sowing. Being short duration crops, they can fit well in the gaps between two crops or seasons as catch crop.

Origin is generally accepted that the genetic/evolutionary origin of lucerne is in the near east center of Vavilof and that the species developed in Asia Minor, Iran and the highlands of Turkmenistan. All these areas have cold winters and hot dry summers. The soil is well drained with an approximately neutral pH and has subsoils with deposits of calcium (lime). Sinskaya, a Russian, asserts that lucerne originated in two areas and that there was a second development in central Asia.

Oats originated in the Mediterranean region and from there it spread to most of the countries of the world like U.S.A., Russia, Canada, Poland, Australia, France and Germany.

Organically produced seeds are obtained by adapting the organic crop production system. Organic seed is a critical input but specialised efforts to produce organic seeds are not adequately and systematically followed. Accredited organic farming standards recognises the organic seed production as a prerequisite to organic farming. Seed health is important in organic seeds since seeds are not treated with chemical fungicides.

Conservation of released varieties requires a sound scientific and technical basis. There are two main strategies for conserving agricultural biodiversity, namely ex-situ and in-situ conservation, both of which are equally important. In-situ conservation refers to the maintenance of a species in its natural habitat. Exsitu conservation is the conservation of components of biodiversity outside their natural habitats. It is conserved in the form of seeds (seed gene bank), live plants (field gene bank), tissues (tissue gene bank), pollens (pollen gene bank) and DNA materials (DNA bank). 

Plant viruses cause severe crop losses worldwide. Conventional control strategies, such as cultural methods and biocide applications have limited success at mitigating the impact of plant viruses.

Protozoan parasites are Trypanosomatids of the class Kinetoplastida predominately restricted to invertebrate hosts (i.e. possess a monoxenous lifecycle). However, several genera are pathogenic to humans, animals and plants, and have an invertebrate vector that facilitates their transmission (i.e. possess a dixenous life-cycle).

A number of plant substances have been considered for use as insect antifeedants or repellents, but apart from some natural mosquito repellents, little commercial success has ensued for plant substances that modify arthropod behavior. Several factors appear to limit the success of botanicals, most notably regulatory barriers and the availability of competing products that are cost-effective and relatively safe compared with their predecessors.

Till date, there is no complete agreement on the terms used in cropping system. An attempt was made to standardize the terms and their usage at the symposium on Multiple Cropping held by the American Society of Agronomy, in Knoxville, Tennessee, during August, 1975. Some definitions published in the proceeding (Andrews and Kassam, 1976) which forms the basis for the improvement and additions of definitions made subsequently (Francis, 1989). The terms commonly used in cropping system and their definitions are given in the following paragraphs.

Over the last decade, area under horticultural crops grew by 2.60% per annum and production 4.8% per annum. During 2017-18 total 311.71 million tonnes horticultural crops were harvested from 25.43 million hectare area. India is 2nd largest producer of fruits in the world after China, with average productivity at 14.97 t/ha. Fruits alone were cultivated almost in 6.5 million hectare area and production of 97.38 million metric tons, (Anonymous, 2018).

India stands 3rd position in citrus production in world after China and Brazil. It is the most important fruit crops grown in India, however, our productivity is quite low 8.9 t/ha (Srivastava and Singh, 2006).

The word data means facts or information, specifically collected by the researcher through observation or measurement from which meaningful conclusions are drawn. Data may be of qualitative or quantitative types:
Qualitative data are descriptive/qualitative in nature and can be statistically analyzed only after processing and after having them classified into some appropriate categories.
Quantitative data are expressed in the form of numerals and are amenable to statistical analysis readily.
Primary data are those which are collected afresh and for the first time, specifically for the designated study.

Principles of Over Head Projector (OHP)
A projector, which projects the image over the head of an instructor on the screen, is called OHP. It worked on the principle of indirect projection. With the use of lens of short focal length and two mirrors the picture is reflected on the screen. The drawing, diagram, letter (may be in colour or in black and white) etc. are made on transparent sheet and are put on the glass platform of the OHP, through which strong light is passed. The rays of light are converged by a lens and reflected by a mirror held at an angle of 45°.

Agricultural Economics is an applied discipline that examines the economics of agricultural commodity production, marketing, exchange, and consumption in the economy. It largely focuses on how a society decides to use its limited resources, which have alternative uses, to produce things for both current and future consumption. Due to this shortage, people are forced to choose between options, and economic knowledge is utilised to compare the options and select the best one. For example, a farmer can grow paddy, sugarcane, banana, cotton etc. in his garden land. But he has to choose a combination of crops depending upon the availability of labour and irrigation water.

The emergence of economic problems is caused by two key reasons.. They are: (i) the existence of unlimited human wants and (ii) the scarcity of available resources. The existence of human wants is the starting point of all economic activity in the world. Unless we make efforts, we cannot satisfy wants. Hence, wants, efforts and satisfaction form the circle of economics. Thus, the science of economics focuses around want - effort - satisfaction.

Goods can be classified as follows

1. Free goods: Goods which are not scarce and available at free of cost are called free goods. Eg: air.
2. Economic goods: Economic goods are scarce and one has to pay a price for it : eg: Rice, pen, cloth etc.
3. Visible and Invisible goods: Things which can be seen and felt can be called as visible goods. Such goods are also called as tangible good. Eg. Rice, bicycle.

   Invisible goods are also called as services or intangible goods. We cannot see or feel those goods. Eg. Copyright of a book, service of a doctor.

4. Consumer goods and capital goods (Producer goods): Consumer goods satisfy our wants directly. Eg. Rice, Pen, etc.

Marshall was the frst to establish the idea of elasticity. According to the law of demand, if the price increases, fewer units will be sought for. But it’s crucial to know how much less will be expected of it. Such inquiries are crucial when formulating public policy. For instance: A price rise for salt might not have much of an effect on demand, but a price increase for TV will have more of an effect. Why? The idea of elasticity provides an answer to such queries. In economics, the concept of “elasticity” is frequently used to describe how responsive one variable is to changes in another.:

In both short-run and long-run analyses, there exist different cost curves.

Short run is the duration of a given factor or factors. Equipment and business owners are typically fxed in the near term

Long run is the period over which all factors become variable.

Fixed costs: are those expenses that remain constant regardless of output or production levels.. Eg: depreciation, annual maintenance cost etc.

Variable cost: are those expenses that change depending on the volume of output eg : inputs/raw material costs, wages etc.

Public Finance

Public finance is a branch of economics which deals with the income and expenditure of public authorities such as Central Government, State Government, Corporations, Municipalities etc. Public finance, according to Adam Smith, is the study of the nature and guiding principles of government spending and revenue.

Micro Finance vs. Macro Finance

Microfinance and macro finance represent two types of funding-related activities. The difference lies in their scope. Microfinance is an individual-focused, community-based approach to provide money and/or fnancial services to money to poor individuals or small businesses who lack access to mainstream or conventional resources. 

Confectionery is the art of making confections, which are food items that contains high quantity of sugar and carbohydrates.

Traditional confectionery goes back to ancient times, and continued to be eaten through the Middle Ages into the modern era.

Confections include sweet foods, sweetmeats, digestive aids that are sweet, elaborate creations, and something amusing and frivolous. Confectionery, delicacies or sweetmeats that have sugar as a principal ingredient, combined with coloring matter and flavoring and often with fruit or nuts.

Confections are low in micronutrients and protein but high in calories.

Microbes like all other living beings require suitable nutrients as well as favourable environment like pH, osmotic pressure, temperature, humidity etc. for growth. The substrate/food base which fulfills any of these requirements and supports the growth of an organism is called culture medium. Selection of a medium to grow a particular type of microorganism is extremely important, as the microbes vary in their nutritional requirements. Thus, different media are used for different groups of microbes. The following are the main types of media:

a) Natural/Empirical media: These are made up of natural substrates, such as herbaceous or woody stems, seeds, leaves, corn meal, wheat germ, and oatmeal etc.The exact chemical composition of this media is not known. e.g. Nutrient agar

b) Semi-synthetic media:

Bacteria are very minute and colourless in their natural environment and are difficult to be seen under compound microscope. To view their exact morphology, various kinds of stains are used. Stains are of three main types.

Acidic stains: These are those stains in which charge on dye ion is negative. e.g. India Ink, Eosin etc.

Basic stains: These are those stains in which charge on dye ion is positive. e.g. Methylene blue, Crystal violet etc,

Neutral stains: These are the salts of dye acid in dye base. e.g. Eosinate of Methylene blue.

As Rhizobia are slow growers so their enumeration by plating techniques is less recommended. Rhizobia can be enumerated in the presence of a large number of other organisms by most probable number (MPN) method. Soil containing Rhizobia is diluted in liquid and dilutions are used to inoculate roots of legumes. The presence of Rhizobia in a given experimental unit, inoculated by a given dilution, is indicated by the formation of at least one nodule on a root. Thus, the method involves the growth of legumes under conditions such that a single rhizobia cell can multiply and forms at least one nodule on the root.

Mycorrhizal fungi are ubiquitous in soils throughout the world and form symbiotic relationships with the roots of most terrestrial plants. The infection of roots of most flowering plants by symbiotic fungi and the transformation of such roots into unique morphological structures are called Mycorrhiza. Over the years it has been convincingly demonstrated that inoculation of agricultural crop plants and forest trees with mycorrhizal fungi can significantly stimulate their growth and development. Such probiotic effects are more pronounced in nutritionally poor soils which occur in very large areas of the arid and semiarid tropics.

Various organic orthophosphoric mono-and di-esters in soils are hydrolyzed when incubated with toluene-treated or irradiated soils, indicative of phosphatase activity. Assays have been identified, based on the rates of release of orthophosphate. Phosphatase activities of field soils showed little or no variation with season but were influenced by the cropping system and nature of the plant cover. Activities generally increased after the addition of inorganic and organic fertilizers to soils. However, inhibition of phosphatase by phosphatic fertilizers and by liming of soils (application of ca and Mg) has been reported. Phosphatase activities were directly related to the organic-P of soils but were not consistently related to available-P contents.

Due to inherent composition (high moisture and nutrients) of meat, it is highly perishable in nature. Hence, preservation of meat is essential to maintain its fresh quality. This is accomplished by various preservative techniques based on the principles of temperature control, moisture control and direct microbial inhibition.

In this method, meat is stored at refrigeration temperature of 2 to 5°C. Chilling of animal carcasses is also carried out during ageing process, cutting transit, retail display and even in consumer household before ultimate use. Relative humidity during chilling is kept about 90%. The fresh meat has shelf life of 5-7 days at refrigerated temperature

Services for CSA

Under the CSA projects and programmes, the services like supply of inputs and technology transfer through extension services are provided to the farmers. The inputs like seeds of crops are provided by the input dealers at the subsidized rate and seedlings of fruits and vegetables are provided by both private and government agencies to grow under general cultivation and poly-house cultivation technology. Similarly other services like soil testing facilities, issue of soil health cards, construction of micro-irrigation projects and rain harvesting structures are made available to farmers. Under insurance scheme, loanee farmers are supported to pay premium dues for availing crop insurance facilities. Other services like trainings at various levels, demonstrations, exposure visits, exhibitions, kisan melas, field days, monitoring and evaluation of all these activities under these programmes are provided to the farmers with collaboration of extension officers.

It is known that the phenotype of an individual is a combination of genotype and environment. Animal breeding analysis is mainly done to partition the genetic part from the environmental part so as to assess the actual genetic worth of the animal. In this process correction for the known environmental part is integral to any animal breeding analysis. In this chapter, a list of common factors affecting important economic traits are described. The analytical part for these effects will be explained in later chapters.

Correction or standardization of data is very important in any animal breeding analysis. Unless the candidates under selection are placed on a common platform, various factors affecting the trait will lead to bias in assessing the performance of the individual with respect to a particular trait. For eg. a lamb born during a favorable season, a lactating cow in its third parity, first lactation yield of a cow with longer age at first calving.

The aim of the breeder is to improve on various economic traits through selection. However, due to the lesser number of parents used, over a period of time, there creeps in the effect of inbreeding and loss of genetic variability which in turn causes depression and loss of fitness. This is more prominent in finite endangered populations and evaluation for genetic variability also forms an integral part of the animal breeding analysis.

Genetic variability is an integral part of domestic animal populations as fitness is directly related to the variability.

The large volume, type and nature of animal breeding data and the complex nature of analytical requirement warrants additional tools for handling, storage, retrieval and solving complex equations. Accuracy, speed, computational requirement, applicability, etc., has resulted in the development of numerous software exclusive for animal breeding data analysis. The database management system is already explained in the chapter on ‘Nature of animal breeding data and database management’. This chapter gives a note on the commonly used animal breeding software.

Energy is a critical component of the economic infrastructure, as it is the primary input required to support economic growth. Economic development and energy use have a close relationship. The higher a country’s per capita energy usage, the more developed it is and vice versa. Human civilization is dependent on several energy sources.

Unemployment is a big challenge in every sector. In Jammu and Kashmir unemployment rate is 22.2 percent as per the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) figures, and the rate is even higher than the National level unemployment rate of 7.1 percent recorded across India. Livestock sector plays an important role in rural livelihood, employment and income generation. There is a huge opportunity in this sector for developing start-up at their own and generation of employment. This is all possible if the skilled graduate of animal husbandry can be motivated for fostering new idea of startup which is market driven. Major livestock products like milk and milk products, meat and eggs contribute around one-sixth of the calories and one-third of the proteins in the per capita food supplies of the world. Animal husbandry is the second largest economic activity of rural India. Animal husbandry is a growth engine and annual growth rate in dairying is 5 % and in poultry it is 10% and will alleviate rural poverty and uplift the rural farmer. The availability of per capita animal protein is 10.8g whereas the requirement as per world average is 25g. National sample survey reports that 70-75% of their food budget is for milk and milk products. The need of the hour is increase in production, productivity and improvement through value addition in the marketing channel. Commercialization of cow dung and urine will also encourage people to not discard cows which have stopped milk production. By-products like urine and dung can be used for medicinal and agriculture purposes. It has been reported that startups would receive upto 60 per cent initial investment from Government for by-products like cow dung and urine. Eco friendly products can be prepared from dung and urine like Bio CNG, vermicompost, incense sticks, flowerpots, dung log etc.

Challenge: High Initial Investment

1. Solution: Government subsidies and financial assistance prograAms can be introduced to incentivize farmers to adopt drone technology. Additionally, academia and researchers can collaborate with drone manufacturers to develop affordable and cost-effective drone solutions tailored to the needs of small-scale farmers.

Abstract

This chapter examines how farm size affects farmers’ welfare. Large farm owners enjoy a higher standard of living than small farm owners, which motivates their children to continue farming. The nation’s scale economies also favor large farms. In India, farm size decreases with each generation due to inheritance rules. Farming does not provide enough income to ensure a decent standard of living, so the size shrinks as the number of dependents grows. These farms are not only small, but also scattered, making farming a low-paid profession.

Size of the farm influences the welfare of the farmers. Operators of large sized farms enioy better standard of living compared against their counterparts with small sized farms. Better standard of living in turn encourages their children to be in farming. This way the interest in farming makes the farmers to be committed to derive maximum production. Large farms further enjoy the scale economies as well. A country with this type of setting in agriculture regarding farm size marches ahead to produce larger quantity of farm products. In India, the law of inheritance brings down the size of farm operated by a farm family with every passing generation. Sub-division on one side reduces the size of farm but the size of holding is further reduced by fragmentation. With ever growing dependents in farming, the size of the farm had been dwindling over the years, as it is at present does not provide sufficient levels of income to ensure a reasonable standard of living. The size of farm that is operated by the farmer should doubly ensure this requirement. Apart from being small in size, these are scattered making the farming an unremunerative occupation.

It demonstrates how farm planning can assist farmers in achieving their objectives, choosing crops, allocating resources, estimating input and credit requirements, and projecting future costs and returns.

Introduction

The ber is a vigorous-growing, small-spreading tree with almost vinelike drooping branches. The round to oval reddish brown has 5.4–8.0% sugar and 85–95 mg of ascorbic acid (Vit. C) per 100g. The tree is a host plant for rearing lac insect (Tachardia lacca). Lac insect rearing helps in the production of lac. The powder of ber roots has very many medicinal properties, such as cure for ulcer, fevers and wounds. The stem bark powder is a remedy for diarrhea. Ber also shows strong self-incompatibility (gametophytic). Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh is a leading state in “ber” production.

The flesh contains 60–65 percent sugar, 2 percent protein, 2.5 per cent fiber, 0.4 per cent fat and 2 per cent mineral matter. Date palm contains 75-80% carbohydrates in the form of invert sugar. It is a good source of easily assimilable iron (7.3 mg/100g) and is hence prescribed to anaemic patients along with honey. It fed on running water and its head on the fire of the sky.

Ficus carica is widely distributed in tropical and sub-tropical countries. The related genera with edible fruits are Artocarpus, Cudrania and Morus of the family Moraceae. Some important species are Ficus glomerata, Ficus bengalensis, Ficus religiosa, Ficus elastica, Ficus hispida and Ficus roxburghii. A fig is a large shrub or low-growing deciduous tree with a short and twisted trunk. Fruits are solitary, axillary green or yellow, pear-shaped.

Jack fruit is indigenous to India and is commonly grown in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Brazil, Jamaica, Myanmar, Singapore, and India. In India, it grows in a wild and semi-wild state in Kerala, Assam, W.B, Tripura, Bihar, U.P. and Western Ghats. Jackfruit is a common and popular fruit crop in the low land tropics of the eastern and southern parts of India. It is the largest edible fruit (20–40 kg). In Sri Lanka, a fruit of about 120 kg was harvested and created the world record. The fruit is also called “poor man’s fruit” in the eastern and southern parts. In the Tamil literature, Jack has been given the important second position of the significant ‘three fruits’, viz., ‘Mukkani’. It is mainly distributed in the tropical humid belt. In India, Assam, Bihar, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the main jackfruit growing states. In Tamil Nadu, the lower Palani hills of Dindigul Anna district and Panruti of South Arcot Vallalar district are known for the best quality jack fruit. India is considered to be the native home of jacks.

Litchi is a popular subtropical evergreen fruit; the white, translucent, flavoured aril is liked very much and is used for table purposes in India. The fruits are available during May-June in northern India. It is a native fruit of the warm subtropical zone of China and has excellent quality juice. Each fruit is a one-seeded nut. The pericarp is the skin, which has a papillate projection like a strawberry. Litchi is commonly consumed as a table fruit, but in China it is very popular in dried (litchi nut) or canned form, which is very popular among Chinese foods. A highly flavoured squash is also prepared from the fruits. The Chinese use the leaves for making poultices; the seeds are used for treating skin disorders. The fruits can be canned, made into squash, pickles, and wine, or dried to form litchi nuts. The tree is a medium sized evergreen with more branches. The fruits are borne in bunches. Flower bark and root decoction are used for gargling throat infections.

Phalsa is a shrub or small tree of Indian origin. Subtropical bushy fruit plants. It is a very hardy fruit, and hence can be planted on marginal soils, where the rest of the fruits can not be grown. Its cultivation is more popular in the vicinity of cities and towns. Phalsa fruit is liked for its acidic taste, coloured squash and syrup. A woody perennial, arid zone fruit crop. suitable for intercropping in mango orchards. Phalsa leaf extract has antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Phalsa fruit has a short shelf life, suitable only for local marketing. It is cultivated on a commercial scale, mainly in the northern and western states of India.

Sapota is a delicious fruit introduced from tropical America. It is also known as sapodilla or chiku in India. Sapota fruits are recommended to adult patients ailing from tuberculosis and children from primary complex. This offers high economic returns even under marginal land and low input management.

Temperate Fruit Plants

Temperate fruit plants are requiring specific climate. They can tolerate both diurnal and seasonal wide fluctuations in temperature and are grown only where winter is distinctly cold. They require a specific chilling temperature for a certain period to break bud dormancy and to initiate the bud break. These fruit plants are generally deciduous and suitable for higher elevations as they can withstand frost. Examples are: apple, pear, plum, apricot, almond, peach, strawberry, walnut, pecan nut and cherry.

Classification of temperate fruits: Fruits can be classified on several bases, but their classification on the basis of climatic adaptability and morphological features.

Introduction

The almond is an important temperate nut fruit with widespread popularity for its kernels throughout the world. It is native to the central Asian mountain areas (India, Iran and Pakistan). Apart from raw consumption as an edible kernel of the drupe, it also has industrial applications as a major ingredient in many manufactured products. The kernels are a rich source of fat (58.9%), protein (20.8 %), carbohydrates (10.5%), and a rich source of Vitamin E. Almond oil contains 49% oil, 62% oleic acid, 24% linoleic acid, and 6% palmitic acid. Its oil, called badamroghan, is considered to have high nutritional, medicinal and industrial value. Almond oil is used in confectionary and also for pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparation. Kernels after blanching, roasting, frying and salting are very delicious and in great demand.
