There are countless biomarkers present in cells related to and determining the progress of a disease. Identifying these markers could aid in detecting cells with metastatic potential (Ramaswamy et al., 2003).

The elevation of cyclo-oxygenase (Cox-2) expression was observed in CMT cases through enzyme immunoassay (Queiroga et al., 2005). In further study, enhanced expression of BRAC1and BRAC2 genes, certain enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) by immunohistochemical examinations, and Bcl-2 & Bcl-XL elevated level in dogs with mammary neoplasm have been reported by Queiroga et al. (2011b).

6.1 Age

Age is one of the most important risk factors for developing mammary tumors in dogs. A comprehensive study carried on dogs has found that the risk of mammary tumors become significant by 8 years of age and increases linearly thereafter. The age of onset of tumors, however, may vary depending on the life span of the dog breed. An average age of CMT onset is 8-11 years, indicating as a condition of the middle-aged or older dogs. Mammary tumors are generally rare in dogs under 3 years of age, unless the dogs have been given exogenous hormones such as progestins

6.2 Breed

Most consistently listed breeds in which mammary tumor occur include, English springer spaniel, Brittany, Cocker spaniel, English setter, Pointer, Afghan hound and German shepherd, in addition to the smaller breeds such as Poodle, Maltese, Chihuahua, Beagle, Dachshund and Terriers. These studies clearly show that the risk for mammary tumors has some breed association and, therefore, having a genetic component. Pure breeds of dogs are generally at a greater risk i.e., known to account for 80% of the submitted cases. Some studies have further shown that certain lines within specific breeds are at more risk than others.

The incidence of mammary tumor accounts for 25% of all the recorded tumors in dogs worldwide. Overall, about 198 cases of CMT are recorded per one lakh female dogs annually throughout the world which is quite an alarming percentage (Gray et al., 2020). Malignancy has also been recorded up to 45% which increases the fatality among morbid cases. Epidemiology of CMT is poorly documented particularly in India. In an epidemiological study conducted on canine tumors in Jammu in 2018, the overall prevalence was only 2% over a period of one year. The malignant tumors accounted 41.66% of the mammary tumors (Sharma et al., 2018). The rate of benign and malignant tumors incidence was reported as 46% and 54%, respectively. In another study conducted on the incidence of CMT in Ludhiana (Punjab) in 2020, it was found that 33.96% tumors were benign and 66.03% were malignant (Dash et al., 2020).

Traditionally, managing the home, nurturing and grooming children have been considered to be the primary responsibility of women. Besides attending the household chores, they attend to arduous agricultural operations like sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, threshing, agro processing in crop production and cutting and transportation of fodder, milking, cleaning of cattle shed and making of cow dung cakes in livestock rearing. The role of Indian rural women is increasing evidently due to migration of males to urban areas which is having profound and far-reaching effects.

10.1 General Description

The soil, water, and biodiversity of the land make up a complex composition. Together, these three components produce goods and services that lay the groundwork for people to live sustainably and in peace with one another. Yet an estimated 3.2 billion people's security, livelihoods, and health are at stake due to land degradation. Any decrease or loss in the biological or economic productive capability of the land resource base is referred to as "land degradation." Natural processes contribute, but humans are primarily to blame for the harm. Degradation is frequently intricately connected to biodiversity loss and the effects of climate change.

Restored lands provide access to clean water, reduce erosion, preserve livelihoods and biodiversity, create forest products, and supply biomass fuel. Trees in agricultural environments can enhance soil fertility, hold onto moisture, and boost food output. Trees and forests slow climate change by storing carbon; intensive restoration efforts may lead to a reduction in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. Restoration can assist communities in adjusting to the effects of climate change by ensuring water supplies or reducing the effects of severe storms.

Plant cultivation was only a modest activity of primarily nomadic populations in the second millennium BC, and it had little impact on the vegetation. After 0 BC/AD, sedentary civilizations created enormous settlement mounds, and on the dunes, a shifting agricultural system with fields and fallows was constructed. Park savannas, an agroforestry system with protected wild fruit trees scattered throughout the fields, were used for cultivation (Höhn and Neumann 2012). Extensive farming with protracted fallow periods was conducted during the first millennium AD. The composition of the woody vegetation changed as fallow seasons shrunk and the impact of cattle herding on the vegetation increased towards the start of the second millennium AD. The substantially lower species richness of the contemporary woody forest was eventually brought about by declining precipitation and anthropogenic pressure (Höhn and Neumann 2012).

9.1 General Description

Education can help farmers in impoverished nations move away from environmentally damaging slash-and-burn agriculture (Nganje et al. 2001). The goal of their study was to see how much extension education can help people embrace agricultural strategies other than slash and burn. In Cameroon, farmers' cropping patterns are modelled as a function of farm size, farmer educational level, and extension professional visits, whether slash and burn, varied crops, or monocropping. According to the data, higher extension visiting rates reduce not just the risk of farmers choosing slash and burn agriculture, but also encourage them to switch to monocropping. Because monocropping is a trend toward export-oriented agriculture in Cameroon, it may help to promote greater economic development in Western Africa (Nganje et al. 2001). Continued extension education activities are therefore vital in decreasing the environmental damage caused by slash and burn agriculture while also encouraging the adoption of more profitable cropping strategies.

The negative impacts of shifting cultivation on the environment as farmers strive to provide for higher populations and the associated decline of shifting cultivation into an unproductive system have led most governments in Southeast Asia to perceive it as a backward method of cultivation (Thanh and Vien 2017). Consequently, governments throughout the region have tried to ban shifting cultivation. In Malaysia, for example, huge development programmes have been implemented to improve shifting cultivators livelihoods when they abandon shifting cultivation (Majid, 1983). The government of Laos has enacted land-use and forestry policies aiming at expanding forest cover, eliminating shifting farming, and supporting intensive commercial agriculture (Castella et al., 2013). For many years, the Vietnamese government has implemented strict rules and procedures to combat shifting cultivation. These include a large-scale programme called 'Fixed Cultivation, Fixed Residence' (officially known as Resolution No. 38/CP), which aims to permanently settle 'shifting fields' and 'shifting people' (McElwee, 2004), as well as a forestlandallocation policy that ties people to specific plots of land, effectively making shifting cultivation impossible (Castella et al., 2005).

8.1 General Description

Based upon ethnic values and culture, both private and common property land tenure regime is found in existence in the shifting cultivation system. In Odisha state of India, shifting cultivation locally called as podu, there exists both private and common property regime (Dash 2006). In case of Meghalaya state, while the private land ownership pattern does exist among the Khasi and Karbi tribes, the Garo tribes, on the other hand, resort to community land ownership pattern (Deb et al., 2013). Furthermore, an ethno-agrarian economy based on shifting cultivations is self-sufficient, and such shifting cultivators typically rely on outside sources for alleviation of their economic demands very infrequently, if at all (Gupta 1994). The use of human labour is the key input in the shifting cultivation system and the practice of mutual exchange of labour amongst these shifting cultivator communities is also not uncommon. In practices like harvesting, the groups of families join hands together to harvest the crop of each plot one by one. This practice of community labouring reduces drudgery and increases work productivity. During this harvesting time, it is said that farmers exchange their innovations and look at each other’s innovations as they work. Further, it is customary to arrange food and drinks by the family of the plot which is being harvested. The community recognizes these harvest periods as festive events which makes their work enjoyable. The case of village named Nawalparasi, Nepal, shows that shifting cultivators work in an innovative way in their community in which the part of the village land is set aside and is cultivated by the members of whole community jointly. The benefit they harvest from this area is used to fund for teachers’ salaries in community school (kerkhoff and Sharma 2006). Further, the close knit and kinship ties are not only necessary for labour sharing but also important for technology diffusion among the members (NAEB 2008). The division of labour exists between men and women. It varies from place to place. The Manipur shifting cultivation characteristics portray that the women predominate in seed selection and planting, weeding and other operations, the activities like cutting of the trees in jungle, clearing, burning are generally done by men Both men and women participate in harvesting of produce and so harvested produces are carried to the villages by head loading.

 

7.1 General Description

Shifting cultivation is a type of land use that dates back to the dawn of agriculture. It's done in places where forest resources are still plentiful. It usually refers to the gradual transformation of primary forests into a mosaic of secondary forests at varying stages of growth, rather than the complete abolition of forests. However, primary forest removal occurs gradually in order to preserve the same fallow time despite population development. As no primary forests remain (or as the remaining primary forests are entirely protected by local customs or conservation legislation), secondary forests fade away, and new techniques arise or are adopted, the fallow period shortens. Natural capital is gradually replaced by man-made productive capital, or the system approaches a state of crisis, depending on whether the limitations to these changes can be levered. In theory, the new land uses allow for more forest protection because they require less territory to provide the same output. In practice, they are triggered or triggered by a series of more radical changes, such as infrastructure development, migrations, financial investments, and new consumer habits, all of which frequently end in large-scale deforestation.

6.1 general description

Between 13,000 and 3,000 BC, Neolithic period, mountain people in Asia, Africa, and Latin America have practiced shifting cultivation (Mazoyer and Roudart 2006). A cultivation phase, consisting of removing forest and crop production for 1 to 3 years, is followed by a fallow phase, in which agriculture is discontinued to allow soil nutrients to recoup (Conklin 1961). Conklin (1961) distinguished between total and partial shifting cultivation. Pioneer shifting cultivation, in which primary or apex forest is cleared annually, and replaced by shifting cultivation, which entails clearing mostly secondary forests, are both essential forms of cultivation that are primarily practised for farmers' subsistence. Partial shifting cultivation, on the other hand, is done as a supplemental or temporary activity (Conklin 1961). Throughout history, indigenous peoples have used fire to manage their land and natural resources. Pastoralists and hunters-gatherers in Africa's savannas, for example, have used fire to preserve the ecosystem's productivity for livestock and game for millennia (McClanahan and Young 1996). In pre-colonial times, indigenous peoples in North America also significantly altered the landscape, establishing and preserving pastures and open forest savannas through regulated burning (Pyne 1982, cited in: Schneider 2000).

5.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

As more is discovered about tropical soils, shifting cultivation has gained popularity as a symbol of change and showing "ingenious adaptations to unfavourable environments, based on a remarkably complete knowledge of local ecology and soil potential" (Allan 1972). The acidic tropical soils are found in about one billion ha of land in the World. Out of this, about 700 million ha of land is in the high rainfall tropics and, 300 million ha in the savanna, and practically all of it is in developing countries (IBSRAM 1987). The shifting cultivator lives in a humid tropical area with acidic soil. The use and protection of the forest to restore soil fertility is "at the heart of every agricultural system," and the tropics' swiddeners have devised a way that works (Benneh 1972). The integrated swiddener prefers field locations with existing mature forest, either "primary" or "secondary," because it recognises that it is vegetation which supply nutrients to the crop (Dove 1983a; Allan 1965; Rambo 1983; Posey 1983). The availability of nutrients to food crops increases after a burn, but these nutrients fast deplete due to leaching and erosion (Nye and Greenland 1960 and 1964). Nye and Greenland (1964) discovered the soil within the shifting cultivation to be quite variable due to fallen timber, termite mounds, and irregular ash distribution following the burning. These differences will be used to create microsites that will be planted with various crops based on the swiddeners' understanding of which crops benefit from rich soils and which are unaffected by poor soils. The field is left fallow after the cropping cycle is completed (typically 1 - 4 years), while tree crops may be harvested for years. If the site is not utilised for a long time, it will recover its fertility; if it is used too soon, degeneration will occur. It may be difficult to detect degeneration, particularly if it occurs gradually over multiple generations. It's especially tough with Shifting cultivators since they "look to be so self-sufficient, so well integrated with their surroundings" (Street 1969). The assumption is that the longer the land is left fallow, the greater the soil recovery will be. The system should be sustainable if extended fallows can be maintained. Shifting cultivators’ response to the requirement to produce food without using manures, fertilisers, or alluvial deposition is soil replenishment by fallowing (Greenland 1974). The technique works if a long fallow time is maintained; if the fallow period is shortened, soil fertility falls. Shifting agriculture is considered environmentally sound while population pressure is mild, but it is environmentally damaging when land scarcity precludes a long enough fallow interval to recover soil productivity. It's crucial to distinguish between traditional shifting cultivation and shifting agriculture in a state of disequilibrium (Watters 1971).

4.1 General description

Most temperate forest habitats support a small number of animal and tree species with wide geographic distributions, whereas the montane forests support a large number of species with narrow geographic distributions. "For mankind's most prevalent disease, we have a multiplicity of diagnoses, each provided with maximum casualness," Prof Galbrith writes in one of his publications. Poverty is a difficult situation to be in. It would be beneficial if we knew what was causing the problem. Obviously, there isn't a single answer. Many explanations are presented because they include a small amount of truth. However, one reason of poverty is pervasive: the historical or present link between land and people. Food, clothing, and shelter are all provided by the land. Poverty exists if these are not available." This statement by Galbrith, which is relevant for shifting agriculture areas with excessive rains and turbulent rivers, summarizes the genesis and cause of every responsible individual's considerable worry for good land management and soil maintenance. To round out the aspects of this issue, there is need to add 'environment' and 'ecology’ to this.

3.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Indigenous communities depending mainly on hunting, collection of food from the forests and managing natural resources to meet their requirements, have lived intimately with nature. Shifting cultivation has helped these communities to earn their livelihood for centuries to become to be food secure. Besides being a source of subsistence, the shifting cultivation has also been a repository of agro-biodiversity. Not considering this, the authorities have tried to impose the practice of intensive agriculture on indigenous people for conversion to mainstream agriculture (Singh et al. 2016). The way of life of indigenous people has been grossly impacted by the stress of market oriented development, government schemes, and interventions by some NGOs. The ‘dimensions of shifting cultivation’ not only includes the area under shifting cultivation and the number of shifting cultivators in the world but, various forms, shapes, methods and other aspects of the practice on spatial and temporal basis as well (Fig. 3.1).

2.1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Forests covered only 31 per cent of the land in the world in 2011, while land used for agriculture, (cultivable land, perennial crops and pastures), covered 38 per cent (FAO 2011). In the history of humankind, agriculture is a recent invention (Mazoyer and Roudart, 2005). With the transition from the huntergatherer lifestyle to one of agriculture during the Neolithic Revolution, farmers quickly expanded their activity into forest areas. They developed shifting cultivation, an agricultural practice with temporal rotations in forest ecosystems. Shifting cultivation still exists today in tropical regions and is the livelihood basis for hundreds of millions of people (Mertz et al., 2009). The range in the population estimate is extremely wide, because of difficulties in counting smallholders spread out under the tree canopy at the margins of tropical forests, as also due to confusion that exists in differentiating shifting cultivators from other farmers involved in small-scale agriculture (Thrupp et al., 1997).

1.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

There is a folk tale from India which is mentioned under relevant situations. This tale teaches how different perspectives lead to different points of view. The tale of the blind men and an elephant originated in the ancient India, from where it has been widely spread to different parts of the world. This famous ancient tale mentions about six blind men who had never come in contact with an elephant during their lifetime and who know and visualize what the elephant appear like by touching it and feeling. In the tale it is highlighted that every blind man touches a different part of the elephant's huge body, but only one part, such as the leg, ear, tail, body or the tusk. These blind men then go on to narrate about the elephant on the basis of their touch and feeling and their recount of the elephant varied widely from each other. They were told that elephants could trample forests, carry huge loads and is very big in size. The six blind men were taken to the elephant and asked how it look like (Fig.1.1). The first blind man reached out and touched the side of the huge animal. "An elephant is smooth and solid like a wall!" he declared. "It must be very strong and powerful." The second blind man put his hand on the elephant's trunk. "An elephant is like a giant snake," he said. The third blind man felt the elephant's pointed tusk. "I was right," he decided. "This creature is as sharp and deadly as a spear." The fourth blind man touched one of the elephant's big ear and announced "I believe an elephant is like a huge fan or may be a magic carpet that can fly over mountains and treetops". The fifth blind man touched one of the four legs. "What we have here," he said, "is pillar of a house." The sixth blind man gave a tug on the elephant's coarse tail. "Why, this is nothing more than a piece of old rope and it appeared to him dangerous, indeed”.

Basic Concepts and Terminology

Statistics is an essential tool in agriculture, helping researchers to collect, analyze, interpret, and present numerical data related to plant traits, and agricultural practices. The fundamental goal is to make informed decisions and enhance crop yields, quality, and resilience.

To illustrate, researchers choose to work with a sample due to practical considerations, such as time and cost constraints. For instance, in a field with 10,000 crop plants, a researcher aims to determine the average plant height in the field. To conserve time and resources, they randomly select 200 plants from various locations within the field. These 200 plants constitute a sample from the entire population of 10,000 plants. By analyzing the height observed in the sample, the researcher can conclude the average height of the entire crop field.

In this chapter, we will explore multiple comparison tests, with a particular emphasis on three significant tests: least significant difference (LSD), Bonferroni, and the techniques to visualize their outcomes. We aim to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of how to conduct and interpret the results of these comparison tests visualization using the R software.

Treatment Comparison

The “doebioresearch” package is commonly used for testing the significance of treatment groups in various experimental designs such as randomized block design (RBD), completely randomized design (CRD), and least significant difference (LSD). This package excels in conducting multiple comparison tests like LSD, Duncan’s multiple range test (DMRT), and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD). It efficiently calculates all comparisons in the background, resulting in the generation of only group labels, as previously demonstrated in the output of the “doebioresearch” package. Additionally, the “agricolae” package is another useful tool that provides detailed values for multiple comparison tests. These three tests—LSD, DMRT, and HSD—are particularly popular in agricultural experiments and form the focus of our discussion.

Split Plot Design

The split-plot design is a statistical approach widely used in experiments where specific conditions apply:

• Hierarchical arrangement of treatments: This design is ideal for experiments involving two levels of experimental units, typically “whole plots” and “subplots.” The main treatments are applied to the whole plots, while the sub-treatments are applied within these to the subplots.

• Adherence to experimental design principles: The split-plot design follows the principles of randomization, replication, and local control, but with a hierarchical twist. The main treatments are randomized across the whole plots, and the sub-treatments are randomized within these main plots. • Resource management in unequal experimental conditions: This design is particularly useful when some factors require larger experimental units or when changing levels of one factor is more resource-intensive than changing levels of another factor.

In this chapter, we explore Latin square design (LSD), a specialized form of experimental design renowned for its efficiency in controlling variation. This chapter thoroughly discovers the foundational principles, structure, and application of LSD in experimental research. It details mathematical models for LSD and guides readers through the interpretation of ANOVA tables. Furthermore, the chapter provides a systematic approach to conducting LSD analysis using R software.

Latin Square Design

The LSD is a statistical design used extensively in experiments, especially when specific conditions are met:

• Controlled variation in two directions: LSD is particularly suited for experiments where variation can be controlled along two different factors. This design structures the experimental units into a square matrix, allowing two sources of variability to be accounted for.

• Adherence to experimental design principles: Like other designs, LSD follows the key principles of randomization, replication, and local control. Randomization in LSD is applied within the rows and columns of the square matrix, ensuring unbiased treatment comparisons.

• Efficient use of resources: LSD allows for an effective utilization of resources by controlling two variables simultaneously. This makes it a more efficient design compared to RBD or CRD when there are two sources of nuisance variables.

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the randomized block design (RBD), detailing its theoretical concept, layout, and a detailed segment on pooled ANOVA concepts. It explains the mathematical models for RBD and how to interpret the results from ANOVA tables in this context. Randomized Block Design

The RBD is a widely used experimental design in statistics and research, particularly when dealing with certain specific conditions:

• Homogeneity within blocks: RBD is ideal when there is inherent variability in the experimental units, but this variability can be grouped into homogenous blocks. Each block contains a complete set of treatments, and the blocks themselves account for the variability.

• Principles of experimental design: RBD adheres to the core principles of experimental design, namely randomization, replication, and local control. Randomization is used within blocks to assign treatments, ensuring that the comparison of treatments is fair.

• Replication across blocks: In RBD, each treatment is replicated across different blocks. This replication enhances the reliability and robustness of the experimental results.

• Managing uncontrolled variability: RBD is particularly effective in field experiments or situations where external variability (e.g., soil type, light conditions) cannot be completely controlled. By grouping similar units into blocks, RBD effectively reduces the impact of this uncontrolled variability on the treatment effects.

• Improvement in experimental accuracy: The use of blocks to organize the experimental units usually leads to a reduction in the error variance compared to CRD. This enhances the accuracy and precision of the experiment.

The chapter on completely randomized design (CRD) presents an overview of its theoretical principles, structure, and randomization methods. It includes the mathematical modeling of CRD and the analysis of ANOVA tables. Additionally, the chapter facilitates an understanding of how to analyze CRD and factorial CRD data using R, offering valuable practical insights for research applications.

Completely Randomized Design

Completely Randomized Design is a type of experimental design commonly used in statistical analysis and research. It is applied under specific conditions:

• Homogeneous units: CRD is suitable when the experimental units are consistent and uniform across the study area.

• Adherence to experimental design principles: This design conforms to two principal aspects of experimental design i.e. Randomization and Replication.

• Flexibility in replication: It allows for both equal and unequal replication of treatments within the experimental setup.

• Suitable for controlled environments: CRD is particularly effective for experiments conducted in greenhouses or laboratories, where conditions can be tightly regulated

This chapter begins by providing an essential overview of different data transformation methods and their importance. It primarily concentrates on exploring three crucial transformation techniques: the square root transformation, log transformation, and arc sine transformation. Additionally, this chapter explores the practical application and analysis of these transformations using the R programming language.

Data Transformation

Data transformation is often needed in statistical analysis and data processing for several key reasons:

• Assumption of homogeneity of variances: ANOVA requires that the variances within each group being compared are equal. When this assumption is violated, i.e., when variances are significantly different across groups, data transformation can help stabilize these variances.

• Normality assumption: ANOVA assumes that the residuals (the differences between observed and predicted values) are normally distributed. However, real-world data often deviates from this normal distribution. Data transformation, such as log or square root transformations, can help in reshaping the distribution of data.

• Handling skewed data: In situations where the data is highly skewed, the results of ANOVA can be misleading. Transformations can reduce skewness, making the distribution more symmetric and suitable for ANOVA.

• Proportional or percentage data: When dealing with data in the form of proportions or percentages, certain transformations (like the arc sine transformation) are necessary. This is because proportions have a bounded scale (0–1 or 0–100%) and their variances are not constant across the range, which can violate ANOVA assumptions

This chapter provides an insight into the genotypic and phenotypic correlations between plant traits. It incorporates the study of genotypic and phenotypic path analysis and the understanding of genetic variability, all illustrated through practical examples in R, relevant to plant breeding research.

Path Analysis

Path analysis explains not only the direct impact of one character on another but also indirect effects mediated through other variables in the system. The approach is similar to the analysis of variance and is sometimes referred to as the analysis of correlation coefficients. A notable feature of path coefficients is that they are standardized partial regression coefficients, devoid of units. This standardization allows for the direct effects of different variables to be compared and ranked based on their magnitude. This approach was first applied in plant studies by Dewey and Lu in 1959, particularly to examine the factors influencing seed yield.

Path Coefficients

In the computation of path coefficients, a path diagram is translated into a series of simultaneous equations. These equations reveal the direct and indirect contributions of causal variables to the outcome. For example, in the field of plant breeding: consider the yield of forage (Y) being influenced by different variables. These could include the leaf length (X1), leaf width (X2), and number of leaves per plant (X3).

This chapter begins with an introductory overview, providing a basic understanding of correlation and its types. It guides readers through in-depth analysis using R, demonstrating how to apply these concepts practically.

Correlation

Correlation analysis is a statistical method used to evaluate the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables. This analysis is vital in identifying and understanding how variables are interconnected within a dataset, providing insights into their mutual influences.

Key aspects of correlation include

• Range of the correlation coefficientThe value of the correlation coefficient (“r”) falls within the range of −1 to +1.

• Independence from origin and scaleThe correlation coefficient (“r”) remains consistent regardless of any changes in the origin or scale of the variables.

• Unit independenceThe correlation coefficient is independent of the units of measurement

of the variables.

• Relationship with independenceWhile uncorrelated variables are generally independent, the reverse is not necessarily true; independent variables will always be uncorrelated.

In this chapter, the focus is on understanding the importance of experimental design and being familiar with key terminology. You’ll also learn about the three fundamental principles of experimental design and their roles in conducting experiments. Additionally, you’ll learn how to do randomization of treatments in various experimental designs using R.

Experimental Design

Experimental design is the methodical planning of scientific experiments for reliable results by controlling variables and minimizing biases. It serves as the foundation for effective research. Some key definitions to enhance understanding of this concept:

• Experimental unit: Entity receiving treatment (e.g., land plot, pot).

• Treatment: Specific procedure for assessment and comparison.

• Experimental error: Variation among identically treated units.

Principles of Experimental Design

Experiments are vital tools in agricultural research, aiming to assess treatment effectiveness and quantify their impact. However, extraneous factors can confound results. To mitigate these issues, we depend on three core principles of experimental design: replication, randomization, and local control.

In this chapter, the essentials of basic statistics are explored, with a focus on obtaining all key measures of basic statistics with just a single click. Additionally, the process of creating informative data distribution graphs is also explained.

Basic Statistics

Basic statistics offer fundamental tools that help us to make sense of data. Below, you’ll find concise descriptions of key basic statistical measures.

i. Arithematic mean (average)

The average represents the central value of a dataset, calculated by summing all values and dividing by the number of data points.

ii. Median (middle value)

It is the middle value in a dataset when all values are arranged in ascending order. It’s less sensitive to outliers.

iii. Mode (most common value)

The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset.

iv. Variance

Variance measures how much individual data points deviate from the mean. A higher variance indicates a greater spread.

v. Standard deviation

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance. It provides a measure of how spread out the data is.

vi. Range

It is the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a dataset.

This chapter serves as an essential primer on R, providing step-by-step instructions for installing both R and RStudio, one of the most popular integrated development environments (IDEs) for R. Additionally, the chapter covers important aspects such as importing data into R and setting the working directory.

Install R and RStudio

R and RStudio can be installed on Windows, MAC OSX, and Linux platforms. RStudio (the IDE of R) offers a code editor, a unified console, and a suite of visualization tools. It simplifies the use of R, making it more accessible and efficient for data analysis and statistical computing tasks.

Steps to install R and RStudio

1. R can be downloaded and installed from the Comprehensive R Archive

2. After installing R software, install the RStudio software available at:

Thank you, Dr Tikoo, for a nice introduction and thanks to ATPBR for inviting me to deliver this WebCon. I would like to start with a small introduction that this particular talk is structured as a general introduction to thrips and thrips-transmitted viruses. There is a bit of interest in everyone with regard to the black thrips which has caused havoc in the last couple of years. The topic has significant importance to plant breeders with regard to the new invasive Western Flower thrips, one of the most dreaded thrips, across the globe and the problems associated with the management of resistance in protected cultivation, and, finally how do we go about with regard to the entire management of the thrips and thrips-transmitted virus problems.

T A Spoilage: The spoilage of low and medium acid canned foods by Clostridium thermosacharolyticum which breaks sugars and form acid and gas (moisture of H2 and CO2 ) resulted in swelling and in severe cases even bursting of can may occur and the spoiled food usually has a sour odour.

T cell: It is one of the lymphocytes (helper T cell) that differentiate in the thymus, possess highly specific cell-surface antigen receptors, and include some that control the initiation or suppression of cell-mediated and humoral immunity (regulation of T and B cell maturation and proliferation) and others that lyses antigen-bearing cells. It is also called T lymphocyte.

Table cream: It is also called coffee cream, single cream or homogenized cream. It is used in coffee and tests about 20% butter fat.

Table oil expeller: It is a type of the machine that is used for extraction of the oil from the oil seeds (Plate 313).

Table ready meat: Cooked and smoked sausages are called table ready meats.

Table wine: Table wine is a dry wine with low alcohol content. Dessert wines certified sweet wine.

E numbers: Each food additive used in the food industry has been given a specific number code for their identification. These numbers are called as E numbers. These E numbers are used within the European Union. The word prefix “E” stands for Europe. They are commonly used on the food label through out the European Union. These are not used in Australia and New Zealand. The different food additives are given different E numbers depending upon the type of food additive like E100-E199 (food colours), E200-E299 (preservative), E300-E399 (antioxidants), E400-E499 (thickners, stabilizers, emulsifier), E500-E599 (pH regulator, anticaking agent), E600- E699 (flavour enhancers), E700-E799 (antibiotics), E900-E999 (miscellaneous like waxes, synthetic glazes, packaging gases, sweetners, foaming agents) and E1000-E1099 (additional chemicals).

Eovalue: It is the thermodynamic favourability of the reaction.

 

Z -distribution: It is a probability density function and a normal distribution that has a mean equal to zero and a standard deviation equal to one and that is used in testing hypotheses about means or proportions of samples drawn from populations whose population standard deviations are known.

Zeatin: Zeatin is a cytokinin C10 H13 N5 O first isolated from the endosperm of Indian corn.

Zeaxanthin: Zeaxanthin is an isomer of lutein occurring in fruits and vegetables (spinach and corn) (Plate 343, 344 and 345).

Zein: Zein is a protein from Indian corn that lacks lysine and tryptophan and is used in making textile fibers, plastics, printing inks, edible coatings, and adhesives and sizes.

Yabby: It is one of the burrowing Australian crayfishes (Cherax destructor) that are used for food.

Yakitori: A bite-size marinated pieces of beef, seafood, or chicken on skewers is called yakitori.

Yam: It is edible starchy tuberous root of plants (genus Dioscorea of the family Dioscoreaceae) used as a staple food in tropical areas.

Yard–long bean: It is the edible 1 to 3 foot (0.3 to 0.9 meter) long thin stringless pod of a south Asian plant of a subspecies (Vigna unguiculata sesquipedalis) of the cowpea.

Yautia: It is one of the aroid plants (Xanthosomasagittifolium) chiefly of tropical America with starchy edible shaggy brown tubers that are cooked and eaten like yams or potatoes.

Yeanling: A young lamb or kid used for food is called yeanling. It is also called earling.

Yearling mutton: Meat obtained from 12-20 month aged sheep. It is also called Earling mutton..

Xanthan gum: It is a polysaccharide that is produced by fermentation of carbohydrates by a gram-negative bacterium (Xanthomonas campestris) and is a thickening and suspending agent used in pharmaceuticals and prepared foods. It is also called xanthan. Xanthan is a stabilizer produced by Xanthomonas compestris (Plate 340). Xanthan is not hydrolysed or degraded by humans.

Xanthine: A basic compound C5 H4 N4 O2 that occurs in animal or plant tissue, is derived from guanine and hypoxanthine, and yields uric acid on oxidation.

Xanthones: It is a group of yellow pigments e.g. mangiferin in mango,

Xanthophyll: Yellow hydroxyl carotene derivative (C40H550C) which is present in all green leaves together with chlorophyll and carotene. Xanthophyll is a pigment containing O2 derived from carotene.

Xeroderma pigmentosum: It is a genetic disorder inherited as a recessive autosomal trait that is caused by a defect in mechanisms that repair DNA mutations (as those caused by ultraviolet light) and is characterized by the development of pigment abnormalities and multiple skin cancers in areas exposed to the sun.

Wafer: A thin crisp cake, candy, cracker or chips is known as wafer.

Waffle: A crisp cake of batter baked in a waffle iron is called waffle

Warner-Bartzler Shear: It is one of the oldest but commonly used devices used to measure the tenderness of meat. It is used to test the quality in the cooked meat (Plate 331).

Wastage: Wastage is a term that can not be precisely defined by even moral value / judgment and defined on the context / situation on which it is used.

Waste water: Water that has been used in a manufacturing process and goes waste is called waste water. Wastewater i.e. effluent generated from various points at the plant such as outlet of Westfeling separator and Treatment tanks etc. is polluted and it must be given a treatment before draining so that pollution control board norms are met. It is achieved through a specific treatment in a plant called Effluent Treatment Plant. ETP treats the waste/polluted water coming from the plant and make it able to dispose off in the river by neutralizing its toxicity.

Water: Water (H2 O) is a clear transparent, colourless, odourless and tasteless liquid; neutral in reaction; boils at 100oC, freezes at 0oC and has maximum density (1 g/cm3) at 4oC. It exists as snow, ponds, lake, rivers, seas, oceans etc., also occurs as rain and is there in the form of moisture in atmosphere. Pure water is bad conductor of heat and electricity. Water is an essential part of the body structure as a carrier of nutrients and regulator of a number of body functions. Fruit and vegetables contain > 80% water and sometime upto 95% water e.g. cucumber, lettuce, marrow, lettuce, melon. The starchy tubers and seeds, for example yam, cassava and cork, contain less water, but even > 50%. So water content must be optimum at the harvesting time. The human body comprises of about 65 % water, while that of fruits and vegetables 80-90% water.

Vacreation: The pasteurization of the milk or cream under reduced pressure by direct steam is called vacreation.

Vacuum: The state of negative pressure.It is equal to atmospheric pressure minus absolute pressure.

Vacuum cooling: A technique of cooling vegetable (leafy vegetables, asparagus Brussels sprouts) having a high surface to volume ratio rapidly and uniformly by boiling off some of their water at 10C and at low pressure (5 mm of Hg) into a sealed container. The produce is cooled by evaporation of water from the tissue surface and is more rapid than hydro cooling.

Vacuum drier: A drier used to dry heat sensitive products where low pressure lowers the temperature, helps to retain natural flavour and minimizes oxidation and browning is called vacuum drier (Plate 325).

Vacuum gauge: A gauge indicating degree of rarefaction (state or region of minimum pressure in a medium) below atmospheric pressure.

Vacuum packed: A packhaving much of the air removed before being hermetically sealed is called vacuum pack (Plate 326).

U value: U value is a measure of the heat transmission through a building part (wall or window) or through a given thickness of a material (insulation). U values with lower numbers indicate better insulating properties.

Ubiquinone: It is one of the groups of lipid soluble quinones that are found especially in mitochondria and have a long isoprenoid side chain, and function in oxidative phosphorylation as electron carrying coenzymes in electron transport.

UHT milk: This milk is homogenized, heated to atleast 135oC for about 2-3 second, cooled rapidly and then packed in sterilized containers aseptically. The milk in packs can be stored for several months with out refrigeration. The nutrient loss is negligible. Used for making yogurt commercially as it does not need to be boiled again.

UHT pasteurization: The milk is heated to ~150oC for a fraction of seconds practically no holding period. It is also called ultra pasteurization.

UHT sterilization: It is method in which food is sterilized, cooled and then aseptically placed in previously sterilized containers which are subsequently sealed in an aseptic environment.

Ulcer: A break in skin or mucous membrane with loss of surface tissue, disintegration and necrosis of epithelial tissue (often with pus). It is something that festers and corrupts like an open sore.

Ulcerate: A tissue or skin thatbecomes affected with an ulcer is called ulcerate.

Ulceration: The process of becoming a tissue or skin ulcerated is called ulceration.

Saccharides: A monosaccharide sugar or combination of sugars is called saccharides.

Saccharification: The process of breaking a complex carbohydrate (starch or cellulose) into its monosaccharide components is called saccharification.

Saccharimeter: A device (polarimeter) used for measuring the amount of sugar in a solution is called saccharimeter. It is also known as saccharometer. It is a hydrometer with a special scale.

Saccharin: A crystalline compound C7 H5 NO3 S that is unrelated to the carbohydrates, is several hundred times sweeter than sucrose, and is used as a calorie free sweetener.

Saccharomyces: It is one of the genus (Saccharomyces) of the family Saccharomycetaceae and is usually unicellular yeasts (brewer’s yeast) that are distinguished by their sparse or absent mycelium and reproduced asexually by budding.

Safe food: Food that provide maximum nutrition and quality while revealing a minimal hazard to public health and they assume any risk present to be minimal.

Safety: Safety is a component of quality. Many experts believe that food safety is the most important quality component since a lack of safety can result in serious injury and even death of the consumer.

R - Enamel can: The acid resistant, gold coloured enamel treated can are called R enamel cans. It is used for canning of acidic food which have soluble colouring pigments.

R factor: It is a group of genes present in some bacteria that provide a basis for resistance to antibiotics and can be transferred from cell to cell by conjugation.

R value: R value is a measure of resistance to the flow of heat through a given thickness of a material (insulation) with higher numbers indicating better insulating properties.

Rabbitto and putridity: The surface taint of the milk caused by Pseudomonas putrefaciens is called rabbitto and putridity.

Racking: An important operation for the wine production which wine is siphoned off or bottom of the vat) and is transferred to a fresh vat with the help of a false bottom. Racking is repeated decanting to remove the slowly setting cloud of the freshly fermented young wine. It is also called clarification. It is synonym to siphoning.

Rad: It is the unit of radiation dose being equivalent to the absorption of 100 erg/g of irradiated material.

Q fever: Q fever is caused by a rickettsia like Organism (RLO), a parasitic organism falling between bacteria and viruses. It is a disease that is characterized by high fever, chills, muscular pains, headache, and sometimes pneumonia, that is caused by a rickettsia (Coxiella burnetii) of which domestic animals serve as reservoirs, and that is transmitted to humans especially by inhalation of infective airborne bacteria as in contaminated dust.

Q value: It is the quantity of energy released in a nuclear reaction expressed in million electron volts (MeV).

Q10 value: The number of times a reaction rate change with a 10oC change in temperature is called Q10 value. If reaction rate doubles with 10oC change in temperature, Q10 = 2. It is also called temperature quotient.

Q-enzyme: It is a branching enzyme responsible for formation of 1-6 bonds in amylopectin.

QHV process: It stands for Quality Has Value Process.

Pack inspection: It is similar to continuous inspection except that here inspector(s) may make in-process checks during different processing operations under contract but not required to be present all the times in the plant during operation.

Package: The package means a pre packed box, tin, barrel, pouch or can etc in which food article is packed.

Package store: A store that sells bottled or canned alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises.

Packaging: Packaging is an industrial and marketing technique for containing, protecting, identifying and facilitating the sale and distribution of agricultural, industrial and consumer products. Packaging is defined as an enclosure of products, items or package in a wrapped pouch, bags, box, cup, bottle or any container form to perform one or more of the functions as containment, protection and preservation, communication and utility or performance. Technically, packaging is a system or method by which a product from the manufacturing point to the consumer level reaches in a safe and sound condition at an affordable cost. The primary purpose of the packaging is to protect the food product, to keep it in good condition and to preserve the flavour until it reaches the consumer. It is therefore, very essential that a suitable form of the packaging is chosen for a finished product. Packaging is an art, which determines the buying decision of a consumer. or Wrapping / placement of objects in paper / other packaging materials keeping in box, etc is known as packaging which has two main functions, to assemble the produces / objects in convenient units for handling and to protect them during transporting, marketing and storage which results in extended shelf life of the produce. “Packaging” play a very important role not only in ensuring safety of the product during transportation, storage and distribution and in conveying information about the pack contents to the consumers, but also ensuring desired sensory characteristics and micro-biological soundless till consumed.

Obesity: A condition characterized by the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. It is a physiological disorder having high body mass index (BMI), which can be expressed as a mathematical formula in which a person’s body weight in kilogram is divided by the square of his or her height in meters.

Objective Methods of quality evaluation: These are based on recognized standard scientific tests to any sample of the product without regard to its previous history. They represent the modern idea in quality control (QC) because the human element has been excluded. This method divided into three groups like physical, chemical and microbiological. The devices are used in this evaluation.

Obligate anaerobes: These microbes do no grow inthe presence of oxygen.

Obligate parasite: Obligate parasites is host specific and grows on living host only and attach limited range of host and are very difficult or impossible to grow on artificial culture/media.

Obligate thermophile: These microorganisms grow at a temperature between 38 80oC.

Oedema / edema: It is an abnormal infiltration and excess accumulation of serous f luid in connective tissue or in a serous cavity. Oedema meanswatery swelling of plant organs or parts. It is also called dropsy.

Naïve panel: It refers to the sensory evaluation panel that has not been trained specifically regarding the product evaluation being undertaken in the study.

Nano technology: It is the art of manipulating materials on an atomic or molecular scale to build microscopic devices. The word “nano’ meaning ‘dwarf” in Greek language refers to dimension / magnitude of the material / particle in the order of 109. Nanotechnology is nothing but manipulating of particles into very small particles called nano-particles. These particles have dimensions in the scale of nano-meter and used to design / build materials and devices. Nanotechnology has been provisionally defined as relating to materials, systems and processes which operate at a scale of 100 nanometers (nm) or less. Nanotechnology is an anticipated manufacturing technology that allows through and inexpensive control of the structure of matter by working with atom. It will allow many things to be manufactured at low cost and with no pollution. The concept of nanotechnology was first given by Nobel Laureate physicist Richard P. Feynman in Southern California in 1959. Nanotechnology is sometimes termed as Molecular Manufacturing based nanotechnology “MNT”.

MAC: It stands for modified atmospheric coating.

Macaroni wheat: It is tetraploid wheat and is preferred for making macaroni, vermicelli etc.

Macaroni: Pasta made from semolina and shaped in the form of slender tubes (Plate 230).

Macaroon: A small cookie composed chiefly of egg whites, sugar, and ground almonds or coconut (Plate 231).

Mace: An aromatic spice consisting of the dried external fibrous covering of a nutmeg (Plate 232).

Mach number: It is a number representing the ratio of the speed of a body (flow velocity) to the speed of sound (sonic velocity) in a surrounding medium (as air).

Macro economics: Studies of economics in terms of whole systems esp. with reference to general levels of output and income and to the inter-relations among sectors of the economy.

L - Ascorbic acid: It is a white crystalline compound with a slightly acidic taste. It is readily soluble in water, alcohol, glycerin, propylene glycol and is insoluble in oils, fats, ether, benzene, chloroform.

Lab coat: A loose white coat with deep pockets that is worn in a laboratory or medical office.

Labeling: It means any written, printed or graphic matter that is present on the label, accompanies the food or is displayed near the food, including that for the purpose of promoting its sale or disposal. After packaging, labels are required on the finished products intended for distribution and sale. Labeling can reflect on the quality of the product. It must be clear and informative. Information includes Name of the Manufacturer, Date of Manufacture, Net Weight, Gross Weight, Best before etc. Proper storage is needed for maintenance of the quality. Storage must be done only at recommended temperature, relative humidity, light and air / oxygen and carbon dioxide conditions etc. to maintain the quality of the food product. Label may include tag, brand, and pictorial or discriptivematter, written, printed, embossed, graphic, perforated, stenciled or stamped impressions. It is attached to container, cover, lid, or crown of ant food package.

K ration: It is a lightweight packaged ration of emergency foods developed for the U.S. armed forces in World War II (Plate 215).

Kairomone: A chemical substance emitted by one species and especially an insect / plant that possess an adaptive benefit (stimulus for oviposition) to another species.

Kaiser rolls: A round crusty roll often used for sandwiches (Plate 216).

Kalamata/calamata: It is brine cured black olive grown in Greece.

Kallikrein: A hypotensive protease that liberates kinins from blood plasma proteins and is used therapeutically for vasodilation.

Kanji: Clean, black coloured, crisp and sound product of characteristic flavor prepared by full fermentation (chiefly lactic acid fermentation) of black carrot with 2.5% salt, 1% powder mustard and some amount of water.

Kaposi’s sarcoma: It is a neoplastic disease that occurs in individuals coinfected with HIV and a specific herpes virus (species Human herpesvirus 8 of the genus Rhadinovirus), that affects skin and mucous membranes, and is marked by pink to reddish-brown or bluish plaques, macules, papules, or nodules.

Jaboticaba: It is a Brazilian tree (Myrciaria cauliflora) of the myrtle family cultivated in warm regions for its edible purplish fruit.

Jack salmon /walleye: A large vigorous American freshwater food and sport fish (Stizostedion vitreum) that has large opaque eyes and is related to the perches but resembles the true pike called also walleyed pike

Jaggery: Raw brown / unrefined brown sugar in lumpmade from palm sap (Plate 209).

Jam: A preserved product prepared on boiling pectin contained fruit pulp having edible seed and skin with required amount of sugar, water and acid to a reasonably thick consistency, firm enough to hold the fruit tissues in position (Plate 210).

Jam pack: The packing of the commodity tightly or in excess is called Jam pack.
