Present Status of farm Mechanization in India

For Average family education (x2 ), the maximum is 6.00, and minimum is 1.250 where Coefficient of variation of this variable is 33.074, which shows that the level of consistency in the distribution is high. Average age (x3 ) of the respondents, the maximum is 58.00, and minimum is 12.500 where Coefficient of variation of this variable is 35.341, which shows that the level of consistency in the distribution is high. The study reveals that Average family income (x4 ), the maximum is 10833.00, and minimum is 3666.00 where Coefficient of variation is 30.796, which shows that the level of consistency in the distribution is high and Family land holding (x5 ), the maximum is 5.500, and minimum is 1.00 where Coefficient of variation of this variable is 38.241, which shows that the level of consistency in the distribution Family land of holding is high. In the study maximum and minimum House type (x6 ) of the respondents are 9.00 and 2.00 respectively where Coefficient of variation of this variable is 30.399, which shows that the level of consistency in the distribution is high. In case of material possession (x7 ), the maximum is 13.00, and minimum is 1.00 where Coefficient of variation of this variable is 70.780, which shows that the level of consistency in the distribution is medium. Source of information for migration (x8 ), the maximum is 4.00, and minimum is 1.00 where Coefficient of variation of this variable is 35.679, which shows that the distribution of the variable is high. It has been found from the study that for the independent variable money required for migration (x9 ), the maximum is 5.00, and minimum is 1.00 where Coefficient of variation of this variable is 26.639 per cent, which shows that the level of consistency in the distribution is high.

India is the second largest producer of vegetables after China. The diverse agro climatic conditions of India offer an immense scope for production of organic vegetables throughout the year. The increase in area, production and productivity associated with nutrition and health security awareness demands lot of promotion of organic vegetables cultivation in the region since these products sell at the premium prices in the domestic and overseas market (Sandhu and Khera, 2008). It is because the major contribution of vegetables to human health is the large amount of Vitamin C and A as well as folic acid and good number of dietary fibres and minerals (Sanwal, 2008). Apart from this, the phytochemicals in vegetables protect the human body from cancers and cardiovascular diseases. Under organic mode of cultivation one can get an average yield of 25-30 tonnes of good quality potato vegetable crop per hectare (Sachan et al. 2008). It is worthwhile to mention that the potato is a key world food vegetable crop which is produced in 130 nations. It is grown from sea level to 3900 m elevation and its edible dry matter accounts for a higher volume of the food consumed in the world than fish and meat combined together (Sachan et al. 2008). More potatoes are consumed by the world’s population than any other vegetables.

Medicinal and aromatic plants constitute a precious resource for mankind. Since time immemorial these plants have been put to medicinal use by Hakims, Vaidas, Ayurvedic practioners and of course the common man (Gupta et al. 2016). It is because these plants possess a lot of qualities for curing the most common or dreaded diseases without any side effects (Gupta et al. 2016). Unfortunately, with the onslaught of human population explosion, industrialization, fertilization and deforestation, the rich medicinal plants wealth has suffered a massive damage. A large number of medicinal plants are now at the verge of extinction which requires their preservation.

India which stands blessed well vast medicinal plants diversity is estimated to have about 30,000 different plant species world over having accepted medicinal value in Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Allopathy, Tibetan etc. In fact, out of the 18 hot spots in the world with regard to occurrence of medicinal plants two are confined to India. These two hot spots are represented by the Eastern and the North western Himalayas, and the western Ghats with very high degree of endemism. These are indeed the treasure house of about 30,000 or around 45,000 medicinal and aromatic plant species pertaining to medicinal culture (Gupta et al. 2016). Out of these nearly 6000-7500 plant species have been very much exploited for the last 5,000 years traditional system to medicines and are likely to extinct.

Livestock is an integral component of Indian agriculture which is primarily a mixed crop-livestock farming system and plays an important role in the socio- economic life of India. Livestock contributes significantly to the growth and development of agricultural sector by providing a rich source of high quality products such as milk, meat and eggs and by supporting livelihood of more than two third of rural population. Livestock has a crucial and rapidly increasing role infood security and economic stability worldwide Livestock sector contributes for 4.11% of GDP and 25.6% of total Agriculture GDP. The importance of livestock has been undergoing a steady transformation with the contribution of livestock in total agriculture and allied sector Gross Value Added increasing from 24.32% in 2014-15 to 28.63% in 2018-19. Owing to factors such as population and economic growth, urbanization, improvements in transportation and storage practices,its future importanceformeeting human nutritional requirements of food and fiberand a major contributor to agricultural GDP is evident.

To alleviate the concerns raised by a rapidly growing demand of food security and the need of ensuring sustainability of natural resources, we need to better understandthe ways which wouldspeed up commercialization of livestock production so that it can contribute effectively to the bio-economy. Livestock performance and productivity can be improved by adopting proper diet and feeding practices, improved farm management and disease controlstrategies.

Difference Between Production and Productivity

• Production is total quantity produced in an area.

• Productivity is the quantity produced in one unit area.

• For example, total area is 10 hectares and the quantity produced is 15000 kg.

Arthropod life began very early in Palaeozoic region, about 600 million years ago in the sea. The arthropod foundations were laid with the evolution of metamerism in segmented worms, and in the ancestral arthropods it resembled the now extinct Trilobites. They had harder cuticle forming the exoskeleton and a pair of jointed legs with each of its metameric segments.

The Trilobite stock soon diversified into:

a) Chelicerates.

b) Mandibulates.

a) Chelicerates: In Chelicerates, the anterior body segments fused to form the prosoma, bearing a pair of chelicerae, the feeding organs; a pair of pedipalps and four pairs of walking legs. The remaining segments formed the legless opisthosoma. This gave rise to Eurypterids (Extinct) Xiphosurians, Pycnogonids and the highly successful Arachnids, including the scorpions, spiders, ticks and mites.

Classification

Classification is ordering of organisms into groups (or sets) on the basis of their relationships that are of associations by contiguity, similarity or both.

Classification of living things is an attempt to interpret nature. It attempts to bring together the kinds that are alike and closely related and to separate those that are unlike and unrelated.

Animals might be classified in various ways but the classification is based primarily on structural characters. Those animals with certain structures in common are classified into one group, and those with other structures into other group. Thus the animal kingdom is divided into a dozen or so major groups called phyla (singular, phylum); each phylum has a name, and its members have certain structural characters in common. The characters used to distinguish phyla include the number of cells, symmetry, body form and segmentation, the nature of the appendages, and the arrangement of the internal organs.

On the basis of degree of complexity, and probably evolutionary sequence, the animal phyla are usually arranged in a series from the lower phyla to the higher ones.

The science of taxonomy started with Linnaeus, who used two Latin names for an organism by a universally agreed name and identity, and further provided means for their realistic classification. These identifications and classifications got strengthened further with accumulated biological knowledge. In the recent times taxonomy has become more demanding subject for areas in entomology, which are dependent on access to accumulated experience and knowledge for their survival and development. By providing name and classifying an insect, taxonomy provides information on the nature of population, life cycle, habitat and behaviour and thereby developing hypotheses, concepts and theories, which are basic to biological control. In addition, it enables comparison and synthesis, all of which lead to refinement and fine tuning of the concepts and theories for identification.

Super Species

According to Mayr (1931, 1942) Linsleg and Usinger (1953),“A super Species is a monophyletic group of very closely related and largely or entirely allopatric Species”.

Super species are, in other words, groups of populations that seem on other grounds (morphology, ecology etc.) to have passed beyond the point of potential interbreeding and to have acquired separate evolutionary roles. They are so by the more conclusive evidence of remaining separate when sympatric. It is to be assumed that they are still near the critical point of specification, near a definitive isolation. They are nascent species that will, if they survive, collectively form a subgenus or eventually a genus but have hardly get reached that degree of divergence.

They are not given special names; the Rules of Nomenclature make no provision for that usual designation and they are mostly known by the name of an included species and are in fact super species.

The study of science is incomplete, if it is not made available to others. The most popular way to make the work wide circulated is through publication. It is most important for taxonomists that what is most needed in the world about their work, is to be published in time. In taxonomy, the publications may be in the form of book, pamphlets, journals, articles, scientific papers, symposium chapters, catalogues and check-lists etc. A taxonomist should publish his work in appropriate journals like population studies or biological studies etc. It should be mentioned in the title if the new research is published. Sometimes, new taxa of one country are included in the faunal work of another country without mention in the title about the country. This is bound to remain out of knowledge for future works. Publication of New Taxa

These are ordinary descriptive papers of new taxa such as subspecies and genera. Such descriptions do not involve careful comparison of all related species. The published descriptions may be justified only when the names of the taxa are required for biological or economic works. These are also helpful in revision of any work where the new species can be easily fitted in the classification. In addition to this, short communications concerning with new records of various taxa are also quite useful.

A database is a collection of data, typically describing the activities of one or more related organisations. Biological database is meant for storing and organising biological data, collecting information from life sciences, scientific experiments, computational analysis and contents from published literatures.

Biological databases play a vital role in bioinformatics, since it helps varieties of researchers to access and analyse data from different parts of the world. The knowledge obtained helps to solve disease oriented and environment related issues and to make vital policy decisions. Biological databases remain as tool to identify insect species as well as in comparing their relationships with related species. The biological knowledge distributed among different general and specialised databases, can be retrieved with efficient queries.

Various information like genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microarray, genes expression, phylogenetics etc. are also stored and maintained as biological databases in terms of genome databases, protein structure databases, taxonomic database etc. These computerised web databases facilitate effective data management and analysis help in knowledge transmission, make coherent information exchange between the studies and public audience.

Veterinary oncology is an upcoming field in recent years due to the integration of the importance of spontaneous canine cancers in understanding and developing novel strategies for human cancer management. We are stepping towards a very exciting era in veterinary oncology, where comparative oncology has played a significant role for many decades in understanding the molecular basis of cancer in companion animals. The comparative animal models have generated remarkable interest in both academia and industry. Studies have demonstrated the utility of comparative oncology in understanding drug resistance and tumor biology, contributing to the translational research[1]. This has yielded breakthrough discoveries, from advanced diagnostics to novel therapies, providing opportunities to improve the longevity and quality of life of the pets. These inputs have led to advancements such as the first conditionally approved chemotherapeutic agent for lymphoma, novel BRAF testing for canine urothelial carcinoma, tyrosine kinase inhibitors for mast cell tumors, updates in stereotactic/FLASH radiation, and novel immunotherapeutics. As the understanding of cancer biology has advanced, the field of veterinary oncology has grown significantly, paralleling developments in human oncology. Veterinary oncologists treat a variety of cancers in domestic animals, particularly dogs and cats, but also in exotic animals, horses, and even zoo animals. While the types of cancers in animals share similarities with human cancers, treatment strategies can differ significantly due to species-specific differences in anatomy, physiology, and response to therapies [2, 3].

Punjab, known as the “breadbasket of India,” relies heavily on livestock, particularly cattle and buffalo, for its agricultural prosperity. These animals play a crucial role in the region’s dairy industry, contributing significantly to milk production and rural livelihoods. However, like all livestock, cattle and buffalo in Punjab are susceptible to a range of diseases that can impact their health, productivity, and overall well-being. Timely and accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment and prevention. This article explores some of the most common diseases affecting cattle and buffalo in Punjab, along with the diagnostic procedures used to detect and manage these health issues, ensuring the sustainability and growth of the dairy sector.

Hydatidosis

Hydatidosis is a zoonotic disease caused by metacestode stages of parasite Echinococcus granulosus and is recognized as a major public health problem worldwide. This tapeworm is found in small intestine of the canid (definitive host) where it produce proglottids containing eggs. Upon shedding through faeces the later are ingested by the cattle, buffaloes and other intermediate hosts including man. These hatch in their intestine and the oncosphere invade circulatory system and lodge in various organs (liver, lung, brain etc.) where they develop into large thick walled unilocular cavity called hydatid cyst, which expands and can reach very large size and buds hundreds and thousands of protoscoleces endogenously. In a survey on hydatid cysts, a prevalence rate of around 5% has been recorded in more than 4000 meat samples of different animals in Punjab.

The Central Nervous System not only consists of the Brain but also involves the Spinal cord.

The spinal cord is responsible for conveying information from the Brain to the rest of the body via the peripheral nervous system. The spinal cord can be divided into 4 functional segments.

1. C1-C5 (Upper Cervical Segments)

It is important to note that the motor and sensory function of the pelvic limbs are not only controlled by the Lumbo-Sacral plexus but also involve the Thoraco Lumbar segments (T3-L3) of the spinal cord. Cardiomyopathies in acts can be classified broadly as Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and non-hypertrophic cardiomyopathies. Usually, no alarming clinical signs are detected during routine examination in the preclinical stage except cardiac murmurs in some cats with HCM. This is because, that the cats are sedentary and excellent in hiding the signs of illness from the pet parents. Hence the onset is often acute with the sudden appearance of the clinical signs linked to congestive heart failure like severe dyspnoea, cardiogenic shock, aortic thromboembolism, arrhythmias and even syncope and death

Cats with CHF will be presented with severe dyspnoea, due to fulminant pulmonary oedema and or pleural effusion. The pleural effusion associated with CHF is usually a modified transudate, some cases it may be chylous .In echocardiography ,the size of the left atrium should be determined .If the LA size is normal ,then the dyspnoea may not be of cardiac origin .The presence of B-lines in the lung area in association with LA enlargement confirms cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. Stress, anaesthesia, I/V fluids and steroids leads to decompensation and fulminant pulmonary oedema. Thoracocentesis is will be helpful if there is dyspnoea due to significant pleural effusion. At least 300ml of effusion can be usually removed. The dyspnoeic cat is very fragile and should be handled carefully. Butorphanol may be given for anxiolytic effect. Oxygen administration is beneficial. Furosemide when given intravenously has an initial venodilator effect and should be repeated as required monitoring the sleeping respiratory rate (SRR). Addition of nitro-glycerine (vasodilator) reduces preload, decreases left atrial pressure and help in reducing pulmonary oedema. If the clinical signs are suggestive of cardiogenic shock or myocardial failure, Pimobendan I/V or Dobutamine CRI should be considered.

Introduction

One of the remarkable advancements in veterinary medicine recently is the application of interventional cardiology techniques to treat various congenital heart diseases. In dogs and cats, congenital heart diseases can be treated much more easily and with fewer complications using minimally invasive interventional approaches, rather than through traditional open-heart surgery. Among congenital heart diseases, treatment options are available for conditions such as PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus), AS (Aortic Stenosis), PS (Pulmonic Stenosis), VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect), ASD (Atrial Septal Defect), extrahepatic shunt, and stem cell applications. These diseases often cannot be significantly improved by medical treatment alone, making the use of the aforementioned interventional techniques essential for effective management.

Asiatic Elephant (Elephas maximus) is the national heritage animal of India. This particular species now exists in 13 Asian countries including India. As per 2017 census, India is home to an estimated figure of 29,964 elephants that is >60% wild population of the globe. Once distributed across the country, now they are squeezed to 14 states grouped in four regions ie., southern (14,612), north-eastern (10,139), east-central (3,128) and northern regions (2,085). There are 2675 captive elephants across different states under both private and government custody. This largest terrestrial mammal is protected under Seclude I species of Indian Wild Life Protection Act, 1972.

Both central and state Government are implementing short- and long-term programmes for health and well-being of captive as well as free-range elephants. The Central Government has established an ‘Elephant Cell’ at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun to provide technical inputs to the ministry for strengthening the efforts towards conservation of elephants. Add-on, the ‘Project Elephant’ was launched in 1991-92 in the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to restore the elephant habitats and reduce their sufferings. Elephant habitats are notified as Elephant Reserves that are basic management units for elephant conservation and managements. A total of 33 Elephant Reserves has been notified in the country. A book titled, ‘Caring for elephants: Managing health and welfare in captivity’ is edited for field officers, veterinary professionals and elephant handlers.

In one or another way, agriculture is integral to the physical and economic survival of every human being. The United Nations forecasts that the global population will reach more than 9 billion by 2050. To feed everyone, food production will have to increase 70 per cent. Helping the world’s farmers to achieve this target is challenging in itself, but beyond providing food, agriculture sustains the economies of most countries in significant ways, especially in the developing world (Anonymous, 2018). To meet this challenge in a fast-changing world, new tools, processes and ways of organizing-i.e. innovations-are needed to make agriculture more efficient in economic, social and environmental terms (Hall, Mytelka and Oyeyinka, 2006). Past efforts have tended to focus solely on technology. Previous approaches to technological change in agriculture have been based around supplying technology in a simplistic, top-down manner. These approaches had some success for relatively simple innovations in conducive settings. However, these simplistic approaches are not adequate for the task of meeting the complicated challenges facing agriculture today. Historically, new agricultural technologies have been developed by public research organizations and then transferred to farmers by public extension services (Sulaiman, 2015).

India is endowed with diverse agro- climatic conditions which facilitate to cultivate various horticultural crops all through the year in one part of the country or others, but the quality of fruits under open field conditions particularly in high value crops (vegetables & flowers) by and large fall short of domestic and international markets standards. Some time there no guarantee of consistent production of from open cultivation, as the crop is exposed to number of environmental factors that changes frequently. Hence it is imperative to increase the productivity and quality of produce to meet the demand of quality conscious consumers. A break through in production technology that integrates market driven quality parameters with the production system simultaneously ensuring a vertical growth is warranted. In this context, most important technology is the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) i.e. Protected Cultivated Technology (PCTs) such as greenhouse, net house, glasshouse and low tunnel. “Protected cultivation” means modification of plant environment to achieve optimum plant growth avoiding the harmful effect of climatic factors.

Introduction

Increasing use and rise in the cost of chemical fertilizers, pollution due to their application and decline in soil fertility and micro flora are worrying facts to the farming community. Increased awareness about organic produce among the consumers is another reason to find out an alternative to chemical fertilizers. Vermicompost production on farm and its use in crop production is one way of mitigating these problems. Among the different methods, Windrow method of vermicomposting is the production of compost by piling organic matter or biodegradable waste, such as animal manure and crop residues as long rows (Windrows) on the surface of soil under the shade of trees without any permanent structures and later releasing required quantity of earthworms in wet beds. This vermibed technology is simple and cost effective and sustainable to adopt.

The prototypes have been exhibited in the premises of Dairy unit, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad since long and many farmers seeing these were of the opinion that technology was simple and easy to adopt using the farm generated biomaterial waste with no additional cost. During 2020-21, when farmers of remote villages Dharwad district were interacted, it was noticed that still the technology was not followed by the farmers.Therefore, a team of Green Foundation based in Dharwad made an attempt to reach the farmers of remote villages of Dharwad district to make aware of this technology. After interactions with different categories of farmers, a modest attempt has been made to identify small and large farmers of remote villages viz. Basavarsikoppa and Holtikoti of Dharwad district during 2021-22 to sensitize and demonstrate windrow method of vermicompost production. The results, experiences of the farmers and finally the impact of the technology are discussed here in this presentation.

Introduction The idea of LiFE was introduced by the Prime Minister during the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow from 31st October to 13 November 2022. The idea promotes an environmentally conscious lifestyle that focuses on ‘mindful and deliberate utilisation’ instead of ‘mindless and wasteful consumption’.(PIB India)

The LiFE Movement aims to utilise the power of collective action and nudge individuals across the world to undertake simple climate-friendly actions in their daily lives. The LiFE movement, additionally, also seeks to leverage the strength of social networks to influence social norms surrounding climate. The Mission plans to create and nurture a global network of individuals, namely ‘Pro-Planet People’ (P3), who will have a shared commitment to adopt and promote environmentally friendly lifestyles. Through the P3 community, the Mission seeks to create an ecosystem that will reinforce and enable environmentally friendly behaviours to be self-sustainable.

Solid wastes, which are left after the fermentation process is complete, may be potential sources for use as fertilizers and feed stuffs.

I. Antibiotic Fermentation Wastes

Antibiotics are produced by microoganisms and have capacity, in dilute solution, to inhibit the growth or even destroy the other microorganisms. They are produced on a large scale using fermentation process except chloroamphenicol which has been produced synthetically since 1948. Solid wastes remaining after the liquid containing the antibiotic has been extracted from the fermentation broth need to utilised. This is usually done by filtration. The solids are a heterogeneous mixture of hyphae of the producing organism, unused media, defoaming oils and metabolic products of the micro-organisms, the most important of which is residual antibiotic. The levels of residual antibiotic can vary a great deal.

Objective

Vegetable seed separation requires specialized training. A little carelessness during the seed extraction process can seriously harm the plant’s viability and vigor in addition to its outward look. Inadequate extraction methods can also result in in-situ germination. The seed can be separated by the following methods.

1. Manual Method

(a) Maceration e.g., watermelon,

(b) Crushing e.g., brinjal,

(c) Scraping e.g., cucumber

(d) Separated e.g., muskmelon,

(e) Scooping e.g., pumpkins and

(f) Extraction e.g., squashes.

Sanitation

Sanitation and maintaining good hygiene conditions are the important aspect of seed storage in storage godowns. Maintenance of good hygiene conditions will maintain the quality of produce in the long run (Mahapatra et al., 2014) and these practices should not be overlooked. The threshing floors should be cleaned properly before the operation so that there is no mixing of seeds or any insect-pests or pathogens. Harvesting and threshing should be followed by cleanliness of godowns to protect the seeds from the harmful pest and pathogens (Upadhyay and Ahmad, 2011). The storage godowns should be well lighted and the area should be preferably sunny, free from weeds and mostly situated at elevated areas. Damp areas should not be selected for building storage godowns as it will affect the moisture per cent of seeds thereby enabling easy growth of insect-pests and diseases (Parimala et al., 2013). Before bringing the new produce to the storage godowns, they should be cleaned properly. The cracks and crevices of storage godowns if any should be sealed ahead and the walls of the godowns should be whitewashed (Hazam and Kumar, 2022). The new seed lots should not be mixed with the older lots. The floors should be disinfected, and it should be cleaned regularly.

In most of such applications plastics films are used as the first preference of the manufacturers. In applications like, protective LCD screens and other scratch-prone surfaces very low peel force films are used. The force required to remove the protective films or the label is very important for both the consumer and the manufacturer. For example, for protective film application, the film must be easy to remove, yet the bond must be strong enough to remain intact for product security. Whereas, in a typical adhesive application, like laminated cups, the bond between the surfaces should be strong enough to withstand various environmental impact.

Kraft paper

Usually produced on a Fourdrinier machine, kraft paper is gritty and incredibly strong. It is then either machine-glazed on a Yankee dryer or machine-finished on a calendar. Sometimes it isn't calendared so that the rough surface will keep the bags from slipping over one another when they're stacked on pallets.

The global aquaculture industry has experienced rapid growth in recent decades, driven by increasing demand for seafood, declining wild fish stocks, and advancements in aquaculture technology. Concerns about water pollution, habitat destruction, and the use of antibiotics and chemicals have led consumers to seek more sustainable alternatives. In response to this demand, organic fish farming has emerged as a viable solution that aligns with principles of environmental conservation, animal welfare, and food quality.

Organic fish farming represents a paradigm shift in aquaculture, emphasizing natural and holistic approaches to production while minimizing negative environmental impacts. Unlike conventional methods that often rely on intensive stocking densities, artificial feeds, and chemical inputs, organic fish farming prioritizes ecological balance, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable resource management. The agriculture sector in India accounts for about 20.2 per cent of its gross value added (GVA) and 17.34 per cent of the total export earnings. It employs approximately 60 per cent of the country’s workforce. It is an unavoidable source for generating demand for industrial goods and services, and domestic savings in rural India are a huge source of resource mobilization in the Indian economy. This sector plays a key role in ensuring national food security and, in the meantime, national security as well. For these reasons, the development of agriculture has a strong multiplier effect on the economy. There is also an increasing consensus that a globalizing economy and a long-term economic development plan for India are practicable only if it has agriculture and raises rural incomes as its central concern.

The Digital India campaign of the Government with special emphasis being laid on digital financial transactions and cloud technologies will go a long way in the evolution of better services and amenities for women, especially in agricultural domains.
