Kharif Crop (Hot and Wet Season)
1. Bajra /Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum/typhoides): Bajra, also known as pearl millet, ranks as the fourth most significant cereal crop, following rice, wheat and sorghum. This crop is primarily cultivated for both grain production and as fodder. It thrives predominantly in the arid and semi-arid regions of India, where it is typically grown as a rain-fed crop during the Kharif season, specifically in the months of June and July. Bajra is characterized by its rapid growth and resistance to diseases, making it an ideal fodder option; however, it is not well-suited for areas with high rainfall. Harvesting and yield: The average yield of green fodder from bajra is approximately 300-400 quintals per hectare. When harvested for grain, the kadbi production can reach 50-60 quintals per hectare. For optimal fodder production, harvesting should occur before the flowering stage or at the 50% flowering mark to ensure quality feed for livestock. Nutritive value: At the flowering stage, the CP content is around 4.50%. The initial cutting is recommended 50-80 days post-sowing, with subsequent cuts occurring every 35-40 days, maintaining a cutting height of 15 cm above ground to promote re-growth. A total of two cuts can be achieved for enhanced yield. Bajra serves as a non-maintenance type of fodder. It is typically harvested and provided to livestock as green fodder, with the potential for conversion into hay or silage. However, the straw produced from bajra is of inferior quality, containing only 4-5% CP and 1% DCP. Additionally, this fodder is high in oxalates, necessitating supplementation with calcium sources such as DCP or calcium-rich leguminous fodder. The composition of bajra includes 8.52% CP, 1.76% EE, 54.91% NFE, 25.01% CF, 9.80% TA,
0.55% Ca and 0.27% P on DMB. The DM content is 22%, with 13% TDN and 0.90% DCP on as-fed basis. When expressed on DMB, the DCP and TDN values are 3.04% and 48.47%, respectively.

Roots: The main distinguishing characteristic of roots is their high moisture content, which may vary from 75 to 90 percent. Their CF content ranges from 4 to 13 percent. The organic substance of the root is highly digestible and mostly composed of sugars (50-70% DM). Glucose and sucrose is the primary sugar. Although the CP content of roots is often low, the rumen’s protein degradability is extremely high (80-85%). Mangles, swedes, turnips, carrots, sugar beets and fodder beets are among the most popular root crops used to feed farm animals. Although sugar beet is a significant root crop, it is typically not fed to animals as such because it is cultivated largely for its sugar content. Nonetheless, sugar beet pulp and molasses (from both sugar beet and sugarcane) are significant and nutrient-dense animal products that are by-products of the sugar extraction companies. Although pigs are fed roots with higher DM concentrations, like fodder beet, they are not a favourite diet for pigs or poultry due to their bulkiness.
1. Swedes and turnips: Turnips (Brassica campestris) & swedes (Brassica napus) share a lot of chemical similarities, but turnips typically have less DM than swedes. Glucose and fructose are the primary sugars found.
2. Turnip (Brassica rapa): Turnips are root vegetables of cruciferous family. They are usually grown in temperate climates. Humans like a smaller variety, while animals are provided a larger variety. It has 8–10% DM, 12–13% CP and 75–80% TDN. Cultivars with yellow flesh have higher protein content than those with white flesh. Instead of passing through the animal, the volatile material that taints milk is absorbed by the milk from the air. Both turnips and swedes can taint milk if they are offered to dairy cows during or just before milking time.

Straw represents a category of low-density feed characterized by a high concentration of structural carbohydrates, specifically cellulose and hemicellulose, while exhibiting low levels of carbohydrates, nitrogen and minerals, along with variable lignin content. Lignin serves as a physical barrier, inhibiting the microbial degradation of these materials. Straw is having low digestibility due to following reasons:
• Reduced voluntary intake due to unappealing taste.
• Low digestibility and nutritional value.
• Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in crude proteins, essential minerals, and vitamins.
• The presence of anti-nutritional components such as lignin, silica, tannins, and oxalates.
The primary aim of treating low-quality roughage includes:
• Enhancing voluntary intake by improving palatability.
• Increasing digestibility to boost the intake of digestible energy.
• Minimizing losses during digestive processes.
• Breaking down cellulose and hemicellulose from lignin and silica to enhance digestibility.
• Expanding the surface area available for microbial action and enzyme activity, thereby improving digestibility.
• Reducing bulkiness through densification.
The processing of low-quality roughages can be achieved through various methods.

Natural disasters frequently lead to significant shortages of animal feed, a common challenge faced by livestock owners. Events such as earthquakes, landslides, heavy rainfall, flooding, droughts, and cyclones can severely impact the well-being of livestock. Intense rainfall is often the primary factor contributing to both flooding and landslides, particularly in the hilly regions of India, where such landslides are a regular occurrence. The essential components of animal feed include both green and dry roughages, with dried roughages, such as straw, constituting approximately 60 to 80 percent of the total dry matter intake for livestock. Unfortunately, the occurrence of landslides or floods can abruptly disrupt transportation networks, including roads and railways. Consequently, livestock owners are compelled to rely on locally available unconventional feed sources during these challenging times.
Unconventional Feed Resources: In periods of resource scarcity, various unconventional indigenous ingredients can be employed. Such times may see the utilization of materials like tapioca, jackfruit, pineapple waste, sugarcane bagasse, rice bran or rice polish, water hyacinth, rubber seed cake, chicken litter and droppings, tea waste, urea and molasses, all of which can serve as valuable feed components. In comparison, low-quality rice straw and fallen leaves from trees are the predominant roughages, constituting approximately 60 to 70 percent of the total feed for cattle. The main sources of roughage during scarcity typically include straws from cereals or pulses, fallen leaves, dried grasses and foliage from forests and jungles. The collection or harvesting of roughages can be challenging due to their bulk, particularly in the case of forest leaves. Additionally, the volume of these materials presents significant transportation challenges. Consequently, chaffing roughages at the harvesting site emerges as the most effective solution for facilitating transport and minimizing costs. The densification of chaffed roughages further enhances their transport efficiency. Chaffing roughage is essential for the preparation of complete feed blocks (CFB) and total mixed rations (TMR).

Backyard farming is an unorganized sub sector of poultry industry. India has nearly 60 percent of its population living in rural areas. However, in the present scenario most of the commercial poultry production is concentrated in urban and semi urban areas due to high demand. Only 25 percent population living in urban area consumed about 75-80 percent of eggs and poultry meat. Nonavailability of poultry products and low purchasing power of the rural people devoid them of access to the highly nutritious products like egg and meat, thereby, resulting in malnutrition. Free range and small scale semi commercial
back-yard poultry production can be advantageously promoted in rural areas, as the large commercial poultry production continues to be concentrated in urban and semi-urban locations. It can be used as a powerful tool for alleviation of rural poverty, eradication of malnutrition and creation of gainful employment in vast rural areas (Sharma and Chatterjee, 2009; Rajkumar et al., 2010).
The most basic and simple backyard production system involves a few hens and a cockerel is essentially a closed system. Home-produced fertile eggs arehatched to provide replacements, birds feed by  scavenging or are provided with household scraps and crop by-products; there are virtually no veterinary inputs and the remaining eggs and meat produced are consumed within the household. Such very simple subsistence poultry production systems are probably quite rare. Producers with even slightly larger flocks, generate cash income from the sale of eggs and birds within the local community. Transactions may take place directly between producers and consumers, but traders and other market intermediaries may be involved, selling on to other sectors of the poultry industry. Village or backyard production systems are widely distributed and exist in both rural and urban areas. It is estimated that today in India, about 18 percent of total poultry output is derived from backyard production. 

The poultry industry generates by-products that encompass all materials derived from farms and processing facilities that are not intended for human consumption. These by-products can be classified as either edible or inedible. The edible by-products primarily consist of tissues and bones extracted from poultry carcasses. Conversely, inedible by-products comprise hatchery waste, which includes infertile eggs, deceased embryos, dead chicks, and eggshells, as well as feathers, blood, offal, fat, and manure. These by-products are typically divided into three categories:
1. By-products from the production phase, which consist of litter and manure sourced from the farm.
2. By-products from hatcheries which include materials originating from the hatchery, such as the shells of hatched eggs, dead embryos, infertile eggs, and deceased chicks.
3. By-products from the poultry processing plant, which encompass blood, feathers, offal (including feet, heads, and intestinal tracts), condemned birds etc.
1. By-products from the production phase: Poultry litter and manure from caged layers are extensively utilized as a protein supplement in the diets of both poultry and livestock. Following sterilization and dehydration, poultry manure can be integrated into feed, containing approximately 27-29% protein. It can be incorporated into the diets of broilers at levels of up to 20% and layers at 25%. In addition to their application in animal feed, poultry manure and litter are valuable as a ‘surface dressing’ for agricultural fields. They function not only as effective fertilizers but also improve soil texture. One ton of deep litter yields approximately 29.48 kg of nitrogen (equivalent to 136.08 to 147.42 kg of ammonium sulphate), 20.41 kg of phosphorus (equivalent to 113.40 to 136.08 kg of ordinary superphosphate), and 20.41 kg of potash (equivalent to 45.34 kg of potassium), along with 6.80 kg of magnesium, 6.80 kg of sodium, and 27.21 kg of calcium. Furthermore, poultry manure is rich in trace elements such as boron, copper, iron, sulphur, and zinc.

Wool, which is sourced from sheep, is a significant protein fibre categorized as an animal fibre. Its hygroscopic nature allows it to absorb moisture effectively. Composed mainly of keratin, a protein created by amino acids linked through peptide bonds, wool possesses unique characteristics due to its sulphur content, setting it apart from other animal fibres. The fibres of wool are crimped and elastic, growing in clusters. This crimping generates air pockets that provide insulation, while the outer surface features overlapping, serrated scales that enable the fibres to interlock and create felt. For thousands of years, wool has been utilized as a textile because of these distinctive attributes.
Properties of Wool Fiber: The properties of wool fibre include the following:
1. Composition of amino acids: Wool fibres consist of amino acids that form the protein keratin.
2. Absorbency: Wool exhibits high absorbency, which allows it to effectively take in moisture.
3. Moisture retention: Wool can hold a considerable amount of moisture in relation to its weight.
4. Thermal insulation: Wool fibres offer superior warmth compared to many other fibres due to their crimp and structure.
5. Chemical resistance: Wool fibres show limited resistance to alkalis (such as strong soaps or detergents) but are resistant to acids.

Animal bristles are natural fibers derived from the hair or fur of various animals, mainly pigs and horses. Celebrated for their distinctive characteristics, these bristles have been employed for centuries across a range of uses. Bristles consist of stiff, wiry hairs from pigs, hogs, or boars, and are typically utilized in the manufacture of different types of brushes. They are predominantly harvested from the back, neck, and tail, as the hairs located on the flank and belly are too short for effective use. Pig bristles are characterized by their coarse, stiff texture and tapered shape, often featuring split or flagged tips. These flagged tips improve their efficiency in paint and varnish applications due to their capacity to retain paint effectively.
Shaving brushes crafted from soft bristles surpass synthetic options owing to their enhanced water absorption and retention abilities. In our nation, bristles are primarily obtained from local and crossbreed pigs. Indian bristles are noted  for their coarseness and durability, although their longer flagged tips (whichcan constitute up to 30% of their total length) necessitate trimming prior to use, potentially diminishing their overall value.
Bristles are harvested from live pigs or boars once or twice annually, as well as from slaughtered or deceased animals. In certain bacon processing facilities, bristles are also collected by shaving the skins of slaughtered animals postscalding. Those obtained from live pigs generally exhibit superior lustre and resilience compared to those from deceased animals.

A well-balanced diet is fundamental to the health of both domesticated and wild animals. Veterinary nutrition takes into account the physiology, biology and pathology of animals, aiming to optimize their health, performance and longevity through the right nutritional approaches. Proper nutritional management is crucial not only for growth and reproduction but also for disease prevention and recovery. Veterinary nutrition encompasses understanding metabolic and nutritional disorders, gastrointestinal disturbances, metabolic imbalances and systemic conditions. It focuses on providing animals with balanced diets to meet their physiological needs. The right blend of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals supports growth, immune function and production. Deficiencies or excesses in nutrition can lead to disorders such as metabolic imbalances, gastrointestinal disturbances, and organ dysfunction. Understanding nutritional science enables veterinarians to address and prevent conditions like ketosis, fatty liver, and etabolic acidosis. Veterinary nutrition and the understanding of associated metabolic and systemic disorders are essential for ensuring animal health and productivity. From preventing nutritional deficiencies to managing complex metabolic conditions, veterinarians play a critical role in maintaining the wellbeing of animals and poultry. By addressing these challenges through research, innovation, and education, we can ensure sustainable animal husbandry and improved welfare.

Hypothermia is a life-threatening condition that occurs when an animal’s body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing its core temperature to drop below normal levels. Animals, like humans, rely on maintaining a stable internal temperature to function. This condition can affect pets, livestock, and wildlife, and understanding its causes, effects, and treatment is critical for their survival and well-being. In animals, body temperature varies by species. For example, the average temperature for dogs and cats ranges from 101°F to 102.5°F, while for livestock like cows, it is around 101.5°F. Hypothermia occurs when their body temperature falls below these ranges, impairing physiological processes and potentially leading to organ failure.
Stages of hypothermia
Mild hypothermia: A slight drop in body temperature, with symptoms like shivering, lethargy, and a cold nose or extremities. Moderate hypothermia: A significant temperature drop that can result in muscle stiffness, weak pulse, and slowed breathing.
Severe hypothermia: Critical condition where the animal may lose consciousness, and the heart rate and breathing slow dramatically, potentially leading to death.

Hyperthermia is a condition in which an animal’s body temperature rises above the normal range, often due to excessive environmental heat or a failure in the body’s thermoregulation mechanisms. Unlike fever, where the body actively increases its temperature in response to infection, hyperthermia results from external or internal factors that overwhelm the body’s ability to dissipate heat. This condition is life-threatening and requires prompt recognition and treatment to prevent severe organ damage or death.
The normal body temperature of animals varies across species. For example, dogs and cats typically maintain a body temperature of 101°F to 102.5°F, while livestock like horses and cattle have average temperatures of around 99°F to 101.5°F. Hyperthermia occurs when the body temperature exceeds these ranges, potentially leading to heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

1. Heat stress/ heat exhaustion: A mild to moderate rise in temperature, accompanied by symptoms like panting, lethargy, or drooling.

Dr. Chauhan quickly rose to prominence due to his innovative approach to Veterinary care. While he treated animals of all kinds, his work with cows became the cornerstone of his career. Soon after completing masters in Veterinary Pathology, Dr Chauhan joined as Teaching Associate in the department of Microbiology and Public Health in Pantnagar and taught BVSc &AH students systemic Bacteriology, meat hygiene and milk hygiene. However, this period was very short of only few months as he joined as Assistant Professor/ Assistant Disease Investigation Officer in HAU Hisar (1983-1996) and was entrusted disease investigation besides teaching of UG and PG students. He taught hygiene to BHSc students, and Epidemiology, Zoonosis, Livestock and Poultry Disease Investigation courses to masters and doctoral students. He also guided several masters and doctoral thesis research on pesticide toxicity, reoviral infection, and protozoan parasite infections. He has written a book on “Text book of Veterinary Clinical and Laboratory Diagnosis which was released by Hon’ble Central Education Minister Km Shailja ji. Students were fond of Dr Chauhan because of his teaching skills, easy to learn process and friendly behaviour; among them are Dr Naresh Jindal, Dr NK Mahajan, Dr SK Khurana, Dr Rajsh Khurana, Dr RK Vaid, Dr Devendra Bist etc.
In Feb1996 he joined at Pantnagar as Associate Professor and was given responsibility of Veterinary Pathology teaching to BVSc&AH, MVSc and PhD students. The teaching skills of Dr Chauhan were appreciable and were very useful to the students. He prepared power point presentation of each and every topic with photographs, line drawings, video and graphs/ bar diagrams etc to make it more understandable to the students. Particularly Dr Chauhan’s teaching include the Indian perspectives including animal diseases which showed the right things present in the field. Many disease conditions are different in India in comparison to other countries; some important diseases present in India are mentioned in the books of foreign writers and similarly many diseases occurs in other countries are not having any presence in India. So it is very important to impart education to students in right perspective which they will face in the field. Dr Chauhan always discusses the epidemiology part of the disease whether the disease in present in India or not; if present then what is the magnitude of disease. Such information is not available in literature, it comes by virtue of experience.

Dr. Chauhan, a renowned figure in the field of veterinary science, has left an indelible mark on the discipline through his groundbreaking research, innovative teaching, and unwavering dedication to the advancement of animal health and welfare.
