Introduction

Food adulteration compromises quality of foods and causes human health hazards is a menace mankind had been facing since ages. Spice adulteration scandals in the year 2004, Horse gate scandal in Europe during 2013 are famous examples of food fraud. Various forms of food adulteration and cheating such as substitution of cheaper food components in place of original product, addition of non-permitted substances, and false claims by misbranding or mislabeling are prevalent from time immemorial (Spink et al 2019).

1. Introduction

The materials widely used for food contact applications include paper and coated-paper products, cellulose products, cellophane, metals, ceramics, glass, rubber, plastics, and miscellaneous materials such as wood, fabric, etc. Most of these materials have been in vogue for several years. Among them plastics are widely used in the food industry as they offer many advantages due to their high cost-to-benefit ratio. However, food safety issues in terms of migration of additives is a cause of concern. Plastics contain a number of additives either deliberately added during their manufacture or inevitable due to technical requirement.

Since ancient times, addition of chemicals to food and food products has been done in order to to accomplish specific functions. Spices, smoke, vinegar, and alcohol were utilised to preserve foods more than 10,000 years ago. Usage of additives in food increased dramatically in the early 1900s, in tandem with advances in food chemistry and preservation. New, tasty, convenient, and healthy meals continue to be in high demand. As a result, by the early 1960s, over 2500 different types of additives were identified and utilized by developing countries in their diets. Basic foods are additive free, but as we increase the level of processing for conversion into an array of products, variety of additives are incorporated to increase the shelf life; to retain the nutritional value as well as to achieve higher standard of sensorial characteristics.

Organic substances consumed for nutritional purposes can be called as “food”. Food contains biomolecules, like, protein, lipid and carbohydrate, inorganic minerals as salts, and organic substances, such as, vitamins, emulsifiers, acids, antioxidants, pigments, polyphenols and flavour-producing compounds. They can be of plant or animal origin. Depending on the durability in terms of suitability of consumption, foods can be perishable, semi-perishable and non-perishable. Food spoilage occurs due to chemical, microbial, or physical actions. eventually affecting its nutritional values, colour, edibility and texture (M. Rahman, 2007).

Introduction

In the ancient era, adulteration was practiced as economical fraud like the addition of water to milk and stone to grains and pulses but nowadays it has become a global concern due to adverse health effects of adulterants on a human being. Words like substitution and admixture can help define adulteration. In general, adulteration is defined as either removal of valuable constituents from food or intentionally/ unintentionally addition of substandard quality material to degrade food quality. Food adulteration not only negatively affects the quality of food products but also results in numerous adverse health effects along with significant economic problems (Cheng et al., 2015).

The susceptibility of roses to various diseases varies by geographical region; for instance, rose replant disease is a concern in Europe but not in North America. Greenhouses and tropical climates, as seen in Central and South America, face heightened issues with powdery mildew, downy mildew, rust, and Botrytis blight. Disease management proves costly and can constrain rose production, prompting innovations like the adoption of hydroponics in Colombia, leading to improved pest control, enhanced rose quality, and increased productivity.

Chrysanthemum, commonly known as “mums” or “chrysanths,” is a genus of plants that bloom and belong to the Asteraceae family. These plants are native to Asia and northeastern Europe, with China being the primary centre of diversity for the genus. Chrysanthemums are well-known for their attractive and colorful f lowers, and they are popular ornamental plants in gardens, floral arrangements, and as cut flowers.

Chrysanthemum morifolium is a herbaceous perennial flowering crop. It is the second most popular cut flower worldwide, right behind roses, and a significant decorative plant for commerce (Silva et. al., 2013). Certain species’ flowers, such as those of Chrysanthemum morifolium and Chrysanthemum indicum, are rich in nutrients and biologically active substances and are used to make medicinal tea and cosmetics, respectively (Lin et. al., 2010).

Mulberry is a very hardy and fast growing perennial plant belonging to the genus Morus of the family Moraceae. The leaf of mulberry is used for feeding and rearing of the silkworm, for the production of silk yarn. It is estimated that mulberry silk worm (Bombyx mori) contributes around 90 % of the total global raw silk production and it is a very attractive economic activities mostly to the rural people. Introduction The betel vine, scientifically identified as Piper betle L., belongs to the Piperaceae family, which encompasses plants such as pepper and kava. Paan leaves, widely cultivated in countries like Thailand, Philippines, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and various Southeast Asian nations, are commonly used as a popular mouth freshener after meals. This traditional practice is predominantly observed in South Asia and among specific Asian diaspora communities worldwide, where betel leaves are commonly chewed as part of a betel quid or paan, often combined with areca nut or tobacco.

Additionally, they contain the antioxidant lycopene, which is believed to have various health benefits.

The apple (Malus domestica), a valuable and economically significant crop, is grown in India’s northwestern Himalayan region. After Orange, Banana, and Grape, it is the fourth most widely grown fruit worldwide. The tree is native to Central Asia, where its wild ancestor Malus sieversii is still found today. Apples have been cultivated in Asia and Europe for thousands of years. The world’s largest apple grower is China and in India it is grown in the hills of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir in India. The average summer temperature during the active period is about 21-24°C growing season. Apple does this best in areas where trees are dormant. The color development will be better in winter when plenty of sunlight hits. It is possible even at an altitude of 1500 -2700 meters from sea level. 1000-1250 mm well distributed rainfall during the growing season which is most suitable for optimal growth and fertility of apple trees.

Grapes are cultivated in India in both tropical and subtropical climates. In Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, commercial grape production only started in the last 40 years. Grapevine production affect many sever diseases like downy mildew, powdery mildew, Anthracnose, Black rot, Rust, Bacterial canker and abiotic causes.

The pharmaceutical and wellness industries have seen a steady rise in demand for papaya as a result of researchers’ recent discovery of their therapeutic potential.

Introduction

Increasing fresh water demands for ever growing population and it has increased by 600% over the past 100 year (Wada, et. Al, 2016) the annual increment rate 1.8 % whereas the present growth rate is less, only 1 % but this figure may be optimistic. The global water demands will grow significantly over the next two decades in all three components as: Industry, domestic and agriculture (U.N, 2018) industry and domestic demand will grow faster than agriculture, but agriculture demands will remain largest (U.N, 2018). The global water demands for all purpose will increase 20% to 30% by 2050, up to 5,500 to 6,000 km3 per year (Burek et.al, 2016), whereas, agricultural demands will increase by 60% by 2025 (Alexandrators and Bruinsma, 2012).

Agroforestry being old as an art and new in its scientific terms has been gaining importance in the modern era due to shift of world from technology to nature in search of resilient way of sustaining livelihood (Dutta et al., 2023, Sharma et al., 2023 Bishaw et al., 2022, Agnoletti et al., 2022). The simplicity of the agroforestry system is the flagship reason of its widespread applicability and reliability in agricultural domains. There has been change in the world perspective regarding the nature and natural resources in recent times. Although there has been forest over 31 per cent of the world’s total geographical area (FAO and UNEP, 2022) but the stabilization of ecosystem and sustainable development is difficult without subsequent interaction between the tree, crop and livestock component on farm lands, being collectively called as agroforestry.

In recent decades, integrating trees with crops for food and wood production has received considerable attention in both tropical (Garrity et al., 2010) and temperate regions (Palma et al., 2007). The growing of trees in combination with the agricultural crop is a land management practice that farmers have been practicing since the ancient period. Seasonal agricultural/horticulture crops, woody perennial trees (multipurpose), and/or animals are major components of various agroforestry systems. According to Sanchez (1995), the science of agroforestry revolves around four aspects: competitiveness, complexity, sustainability, and profitability, and all of these factors must be balanced in order to produce beneficial outcomes. In fact, agroforestry is significantly assisting in meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) such as poverty and hunger eradication, improved health, nutrition, and education for people, gender equality, and environmental sustainability, particularly in developing countries (Garrity, 2004, 2006).

The preservation of Earth’s biological diversity and the protection of the benefits, or “ecosystem services,” those functioning ecosystems bring to humanity are two primary goals of environmental conservation. Agroforestry is increasingly viewed as providing ecological services, environmental advantages, and economic gains as part of a multifunctional working landscape. The multifunctional importance of agroecosystems was emphasized in both the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MES 2005) and the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (2008).

More than a third is covered by drylands in the terrestrial land surface, which have a harsh and vulnerable natural condition (Maier et al., 2014). Due to insufficient water availability, dry areas have a scant population of vascular plants, as well as poor availability of the nutrient turnover with poor availability of the resources as a result of severe temperatures (Adeel, 2008). Biological soil crusts or Biocrusts commonly protects the soil surface in dry environments and it is considered “ecosystem engineers” of arid and semiarid areas, as well as signs of ecosystem health (Briggs and Morgan, 2011; Bowker et al., 2008). They are connected in dryland ecosystem restoration level or degradation (Assouline et al., 2015). When compared to chemical or physical crusts, biocrust is the largest word that explicitly implies that these are the crusts which are dependent on the living organisms’ activity.

According to the Forest Survey of India (FSI) “all lands, more than one hectare in area, with a tree canopy density of more than 10% is defined as Forest” (FSI 2009). The status of forests and forest management systems contribute to the vulnerability of forests to climate change. Indian forests are extremely diverse and heterogeneous. Forests and Climate Change are intimately intertwined. Forests have regulated the climate, rain, groundwater, soil of the earth over millennia. Their transpiration act as a regulator of the balance of oxygen and carbon-di-oxide: the world’s forests and forest soils currently store more than one trillion tons of carbon – twice the amount found floating free in the atmosphere. The forest and soils are home of biological diversity.

While the conventional cropping system have enhanced crop productivity, its consequences including land degradation, resource depletion, reduced organic matter insoil, draught, soil salinity, erosion, and climate change pose significant global threats (Tomar et al. 2014; Yadav et al. 2014; Mandal et al. 2020; Rani et al. 2021).

Soil is a vital, complex, and firm layer of the land surface that provides a source of minerals and organic matter interacting with air and water to harbor life forms. (Lobmann et al., 2022). Versatile micro and macro living organisms, i.e., bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes, inhabit soil and contribute to its quality, health, and inevitable role in serving the environment (Elsakhawy et al., 2022). Soil roots for a variety of crucial functions which involve ecosystem services or socioeconomic activities, e.g., biomass production, climate gas fluxes of CO2 , N2 O, and CH4 , water cleaning, storage and supply, foundation of construction and provision of construction materials, or provision of habitats etc. The responsibility of soil in sustaining life on earth by providing and conserving resources is not negotiable.

By reducing soil acidity and boosting soil fertility, nano-black carbon is believed to improve plant development. The application of nano-black carbon to agricultural soils can have a significant positive impact on plant productivity. In addition to potentially boosting soil resilience to climate change, nano-black carbon greatly boosted enzyme activity, microbial activity, and soil organic carbon retention.Due to a liming action, nano-black carbon has been proposed as a potential biotechnology to boost agricultural yields in acidic soils.

More than three billion people are at risk of poverty due to land degradation caused by humans (Kansanga, Kerr, Lupafya, Dakishoni, & Luginaah, 2021). The implementation of Soil Sustainability Management (SSM) practices remains low among smallholder farmers, despite the fact that SSM has developed as a generally accepted technique to tackling soil degradation in Agro ecosystems (Kansanga et al., 2021). When it comes to food, water, energy, climate, biodiversity, and the provision of ecosystem services, soil plays a pivotal role in addressing these global environmental sustainability concerns (McBratney, Field, & Koch, 2014). The availability of food, fiber, clean water, and a varied landscape are all dependent on healthy soil.
