INTRODUCTION
A PTO (Power Take Off) in a tractor transfers mechanical power from the engine to various tractor implements or attachments, such as a rotavator, thresher, straw reaper, or super seeder, through a PTO shaft. In India, the PTO is typically located at the rear of the tractor, while in several other countries, a front PTO is also available to power front-mounted machines. Different PTO-driven implements require varying amounts of PTO horsepower (HP) for operation. PTO horsepower indicates the power available for driving tractor attachments, and it is transmitted to these implements via the PTO shaft.
The rear-mounted power outlet, known as the PTO, is used to operate PTOdriven implements like a rotavator, power harrow, and baler. Tractors are used not only for towing implements for tillage and sowing but also for stationary tasks such as crop threshing and water pumping from tube wells, which are powered by the PTO. The PTO-driven implements require a specific amount of horsepower, referred to as PTO HP, to function. This PTO HP is the portion of the engine power used to operate the implements, and it is always lower than the tractor’s total horsepower due to friction losses. Additionally, the PTO shaft derives its power from the gearbox.
There are two standard PTO speeds: 540 rpm and 1000 rpm. This standardization was introduced to ensure that implements are designed to operate efficiently at these speeds. For splines, the 540 rpm shaft has 6 splines, while the 1000 rpm shaft features 21 splines.
THE INVENTION OF PTO IN THE TRACTOR INDUSTRY
In 1918, the International Harvester Company (IHC) introduced the Power Take Off (PTO) in tractors, with Edward A. Johnston, an IHC engineer, being the first to develop the concept after being inspired by homemade PTO systems in France. The 8-16 model became the first commercial tractor to feature PTO. Two

Commonly targeted traits include tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, high grain or biomass yield, end-use quality characteristics such as taste, and specific concentrations of biological molecules (proteins, sugars, lipids, vitamins, fibers). Additionally, ease of processing (harvesting, milling, baking, malting, blending, etc.) is often a key consideration. The specific goals of a plant breeding project are highly dependent on the intended market for the product. For instance, in wheat, varieties bred for high gluten protein content are used for making noodles and breads, while varieties selected for low protein content are used for pastry flours. Similarly, grape varieties are developed with varying chemical compositions to suit different applications such as juices, red and white wines, and jams.
Plant breeders utilize various techniques to enhance the genetic composition of crops, with successful strategies depending on the plant’s physical, physiological, and hereditary characteristics. Different breeding approaches are needed for self-pollinating, cross-pollinating, and clonally-propagated plants. As human civilization has advanced, the methods used by plant breeders have evolved, incorporating humanity’s growing understanding of genetics.

Agriculture is a vital sector that sustains economies and ensures food security. However, farming comes with unique stressors that significantly impact mental health. Farmers face financial uncertainties, climate-related challenges, market fluctuations, labor shortages, and social isolation, all of which contribute to mental health struggles. Recognizing and addressing these issues is crucial for improving the well-being of farmers and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
Common Mental Health Challenges Faced by Farmers Farmers often experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression due to the demanding nature of their profession. Some of the primary mental health challenges include:
1. Financial Stress: Unpredictable weather conditions, fluctuating market prices, and increasing input costs lead to financial instability. This burden contributes to anxiety and, in severe cases, suicidal thoughts.
2. Isolation and Loneliness: Farming is often a solitary occupation, leading to social isolation. Limited interactions with peers can result in a lack of emotional support.

Agri-tourism, also known as farm tourism or agro-tourism, is a growing sector that combines agriculture with tourism. It offers visitors an opportunity to experience rural life, farm activities, and the natural beauty of agricultural landscapes. Agri-tourism serves as a supplementary source of income for farmers while promoting cultural exchange, environmental awareness, and sustainable development.
Concept and Scope of Agri-Tourism Agri-tourism encompasses a range of activities, including farm stays, organic farm visits, dairy farming experiences, vineyard tours, livestock interaction, and agricultural festivals. It allows tourists to participate in farm-based activities such as milking cows, plowing fields, harvesting crops, and tasting farm-fresh produce. This form of tourism not only educates visitors about agriculture but also fosters a deeper appreciation for rural traditions and lifestyles.
Benefits of Agri-Tourism
1. Economic Benefits: Agri-tourism provides an additional source of income for farmers, reducing their dependence on traditional farming. It creates employment opportunities in rural areas and contributes to local economies by promoting the sale of agricultural products, handicrafts, and local cuisine.
2. Environmental Benefits: By encouraging eco-friendly tourism, agritourism helps in the conservation of natural resources, promotes organic farming, and reduces the environmental impact of mass tourism.
3. Socio-Cultural Benefits: Agri-tourism facilitates cultural exchange between urban and rural populations. It preserves traditional farming practices, promotes rural heritage, and strengthens community bonds.
4. Educational Benefits: Tourists, especially students and children, gain hands-on knowledge about farming techniques, biodiversity, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Guava planting has historically followed a 5 m × 5 m or 6 m x 6 m spacing, providing 278 to 400 plants per hectare in a square planting pattern. Growth, productivity, fruit quality, and leaf nutritional content are just a few of the management characteristics of guava orchards that are greatly impacted by this traditional spacing method. CISH, Lucknow, has recently launched a novel meadow orchard system that comprises growing guava at a greater density of 5000 plants per hectare with a spacing of 2.0 x 1.0 metres. Regular topping and hedging techniques are used in this innovative approach, especially in the early phases of orchard development. Techniques for topping and hedging are essential for regulating tree size and increasing fruit supply. By using strategic management techniques to maximise tree size and fruit output, this meadow orchard system offers a more intense approach to guava cultivation than standard planting methods. It also provides improved plant density. This method’s introduction is a reflection of continuous attempts to improve guava growing methods and adjust to changing agricultural practises.
9.1 Low Density Planting
When planting guava, low-density planting differs from traditional or higher-density planting in that the guava plants are spaced widely apart and accommodates about 100-250 plants/ha. According to several studies, this strategy has a number of benefits that are essential for the best possible orchard management and acquires commercial production potential after 7-10 years of planting. According to Singh and Yadav (2014), guava trees are typically planted with a spacing of 6 to 8 metres between rows and 3 to 5 metres between trees within a row in low-density plantings. This spacing and planting density encourages a more open and well-ventilated orchard layout. (Singh & Yadav, 2014). The advantages of low-density planting are numerous, as Paramesha and Ravishankar (2013) have shown. Better fruit quality is the outcome of increased photosynthesis fostered by improved light penetration. Furthermore, the improved air circulation lowers the risk of illness, giving guava trees a better habitat. Additionally, less rivalry among trees promotes greater water and nutrient absorption, which increases tree vigour and productivity overall

Varietal description and nomenclature of different guava varieties grown in India are greatly confusing. Some varieties were named according to shape of the fruit, skin colour and pulp colour, while, several other varieties were named after in the place of origin. Pandey (1968) made detailed studies in different cultivars of guava and classified them into the white pulp group and the red pulp group. Guava is largely a self-pollinated crop, but crosspollination also does occur. This results in a large variability in the seedling population from which promising genotypes have been selected in different agro-climatic regions of the country. Promising cultivars of different Indian states are given below:
About 160 genotypes, including somePsidum spp., are available in Indian collections and are maintained at several centres within the country in field gene banks. Nomenclature of the cultivars of guava grown in India is not yet well established. Some of the varieties have been named according to shape, colour, and smoothness of skin or by the place of their origin. Characters like plant growth, yield and physico-chemical composition of different guava varieties were reported by several workers. Varietal evaluation was carried out by many workers who reported performance of these varieties under

environmental conditions tailored to the specific needs of the crop. Key factors managed include water availability, light intensity, humidity levels, temperature, and soil moisture. While this technique is extensively adopted in developed nations, its use in India remains relatively limited.
In recent years, the climate of India has experienced several disasters such as droughts, floods, and pest attacks.
India’s agricultural landscape has faced numerous challenges in recent times due to frequent natural calamities like droughts, floods, and pest infestations. These conditions have led to substantial crop losses and have pushed many farmers into financial distress. To combat this, the adoption of protected cultivation techniques has become increasingly essential, offering a path to higher productivity and profitability.
Every year, India’s Northeastern state and Coastal regions face extreme crop damage due to high rainfall.
Heavy rainfall causes severe crop destruction annually in the Northeastern and Coastal areas of India. Fortunately, greenhouses now offer a viable solution by acting as protective shelters from rain, enabling farmers in these regions to safeguard their crops effectively.
TYPES OF PROTECTED CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES
Though there are several protected cultivation techniques, the most commonly used are:
• Greenhouses
• Shade net houses
• Insect-proof net houses

Bunding is a traditional yet effective soil conservation method that involves constructing embankments or barriers along land contours to manage water flow and reduce soil erosion. These embankments, known as bunds, are particularly beneficial in semi-arid and erosion-prone areas, where water conservation and soil stability are essential for sustainable agriculture.
Bunds slow down surface runoff, allowing water to infiltrate the soil rather than washing away valuable topsoil. This not only reduces erosion but also improves soil moisture retention and supports crop growth. Bunds can be made from local materials such as soil, stones, or a combination of both.
TYPES OF BUNDING
There are several types of bunding, each with its unique features and benefits. Let’s explore the most common ones:
Contour Bunding
Contour bunding is a well-established soil conservation technique that involves constructing embankments along lines of equal elevation across sloping terrain. These structures, often equated with level terraces, are designed to intercept surface runoff, thereby reducing soil erosion and improving moisture retention in cultivated lands. Originating as a famine relief initiative in Maharashtra, India, contour bunding has since proven to be an effective and sustainable method for preserving agricultural productivity in hilly and semi-arid regions.
This practice is particularly suited to a wide range of permeable soils, including alluvial, red lateritic, shallow and medium black soils, as well as deep black cotton soils. However, challenges such as soil cracking in black cotton soils may compromise bund integrity, necessitating periodic repair and upkeep.

As globalization evolves, including free trade liberalization and the expansion of rural agribusiness, smallholders face challenges in adapting to the changing market economy. Population growth and land inheritance laws have led to the subdivision and fragmentation of farmland. In countries like India, smallholders risk marginalization as larger agricultural enterprises increasingly dominate profitable agribusiness.
Recent global trends emphasize environmentally sound practices-balancing ecological and economic concerns and sustainability, which integrates social, environmental and long-term economic considerations. These principles, along with health and environmental regulations, are driving the expansion of contractual farming relationships (Rehber, 2019). Globalisation and market liberalisation in developing countries have transformed agricultural markets, creating new opportunities for high-value products (Wigboldus, 2018). Consequently, migration to urban areas is widespread. According to the Periodic Labour Survey Report (July 2020 - June 2021), the primary reasons for male labour migration are “search for employment or better employment (22.8%)” and “to take up offered employment opportunities or be close to their workplace (20.1%)”. Efforts to curb this migration focus on promoting income-generating activities for smallholders. However, these initiatives have largely failed due to a lack of market linkages-both backward and forwardand reliable, cost-effective inputs, such as extension services, mechanization, quality seeds, fertilizers, credit and access to profitable markets. Evidence suggests that well-organized contract farming can establish such linkages, offering smallholders an affordable pathway to operate commercially. Notably, contract farming can ensure a dependable supply of agricultural products, both in quality and quantity.
Since its inception, contract farming has demonstrated its potential to support smallholder farmers. Historical evidence shows the opportunities of contract farming from ancient Greece, China and to modern United States. The foundation of such arrangements in different countries is a commitment by smallholder farmers to provide a specific community with certain quantity and quality standards set by the purchaser and a commitment by the company to

In this study, data collected from the field were meticulously scored, tabulated and analyzed using a variety of statistical tools to meet the specific objectives of the research. The structure and functioning of Indian agriculture have undergone significant transformation, primarily driven by the forces of commercialisation and increasing reliance on trade. These changes have been influenced by a range of both visible and subtle shifts in the sector. Among these, crop diversification and the implementation of trade liberalisation policies have played the most prominent roles in reshaping agricultural dynamics.
One of the critical challenges repeatedly highlighted by agricultural experts is the small size of landholdings in India. this structural limitation has left many Indian farmers unable to compete with the large-scale mechanised farming systems prevalent in Western countries. In light of this, land consolidation is becoming increasingly essential for improving competitiveness and sustainability. Despite various policy interventions and efforts by nongovernmental organizations aimed at curbing rural out migrations, including generating programs and measures, have largely failed. The primary reason lies in the breakdown of forward and backward linkages within the farming ecosystem. Key services such as mechanisation, farm advisory support, critical input supply and access to profitable markets remain inefficient and poorly coordinated. In this context, contract farming emerges as a promising solution. By establishing structured agreements between smallholders and agribusinesses, contract farming strengthens market linkages and provides access to essential resources and management support. Typically, these agreements cover three core areas: market access, resource provision and management services.
When implemented effectively, contract farming can offer long-term benefits for both farmers and buyers. Most importantly, it supports the welfare of smallholder farmers by addressing multiple dimensions of poverty, not just income-based poverty, but also by creating sustainable employment opportunities and improving market access. Against this background, the present study has undertaken to explore the perceived effects of contract farming on employment generation and poverty reduction.

The Renewable energy (also called green energy) is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale. In other words, Renewable energy is energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. The most widely used renewable energy types are solar energy, wind energy,biomass energy, and hydroenergy.
India has made significant progress in the renewable energy sector, with renewable energy accounting for 43.12% of the country’s total installed power generation capacity. Globally, India ranks 4th in overall renewable energy capacity, 4th in wind power with 46.65 GW, and 5th in solar photovoltaic power with 85.47 GW. The country has surpassed 200 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity which includes 85.47 GW of solar power, 46.93 GW of large hydropower, 46.66 GW of wind power, 10.95 GW of biopower, 5.00 GW of small hydropower, and 0.60 GW of waste-to-energy capacity.
Presently India has set ambitious renewable energy targets. By 2030, the country aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity and meet at least 50% of its total energy requirements through renewable sources. These efforts position India as a global leader in the transition towards sustainable and clean energy.
In recent years, India’s renewable energy capacity has grown rapidly. As per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE, 2025), the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro) reached 220.10 GW by March 2025. When large hydro and nuclear power are included, the non-fossil fuel capacity has crossed 242.8 GW, representing over 50 percent of India’s total

Proximate Analysis of Biomass
Objective
To determine the key compositional parameters of biomass, including moisture content, volatile matter, ash content, and fixed carbon, using standardized analytical procedures.
Principle
Proximate analysis of biomass is a standardized method used to determine the basic compositional components of biomass materials. It provides essential information about fuel quality and conversion characteristics. Biomass can serve as an energy source either directly through combustion or indirectly through conversion into gaseous, liquid, or solid fuels for more efficient utilization. These transformations occur through thermochemical processes (combustion, gasification, and pyrolysis) and biochemical processes (anaerobic digestion and fermentation).
Common biomass materials such as agricultural residues, cattle dung, poultry litter, and paddy straw are analyzed for parameters including total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), ash content, total organic carbon (TOC), moisture content, and total sugars. These parameters are typically estimated using AOAC (2000) and other standard protocol.

    In recent years, the global demand for renewable and sustainable energy sources has led to increased interest in biogas production from agricultural residues and lignocellulosic biomass. Among these, paddy straw an abundant agricultural by-product—has gained attention as a potential substrate for anaerobic digestion and biofuel generation.
However, the biochemical conversion of paddy straw into biogas is limited by its complex lignocellulosic structure, which makes it resistant to microbial degradation. Therefore, pretreatment of biomass is a critical step to enhance its digestibility and improve the overall efficiency of biogas production.
Objective
The primary objective of pretreatment is to break down the structural and compositional barriers within lignocellulosic biomass that hinder microbial degradation and enzymatic hydrolysis. Specifically, pretreatment aims to:
1. Disrupt lignin structure and reduce cellulose crystallinity.
2. Increase surface area and porosity of the biomass for microbial access.
3. Improve enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency for higher sugar and methane yields.
4. Minimize sugar loss and avoid the formation of inhibitory byproducts.
5. Enhance biogas yield and the rate of biodegradation.
6. Achieve these improvements in a cost-effective and scalable manner

Objective
To produce ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., paddy straw)
through a series of biochemical processes pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, and microbial fermentation and to evaluate sugar yield, ethanol concentration, and fermentation efficiency.
Introduction and Theoretical Background
Ethanol (C2H5OH), commonly known as ethyl alcohol, is one of the most important biofuels and renewable energy sources in the modern era. It is a clear, volatile, and flammable liquid that can be used both as a fuel additive (blended with gasoline to form gasohol) and as an independent energy source in modified internal combustion engines. In addition, ethanol is extensively used in the pharmaceutical, beverage, and chemical industries. Globally, more than 30 billion litres of ethanol are produced annually, primarily via fermentation of sugar-rich feedstocks such as sugarcane juice, molasses, and starch-based crops like maize and wheat. However, reliance on these food-based resources has raised sustainability and food security concerns. Therefore, attention has increasingly shifted toward lignocellulosic biomass, such as agricultural residues (paddy straw, corn stover, bagasse, etc.), which are abundant, renewable, and inexpensive.
Paddy straw, a by-product of rice cultivation, is a promising raw material for bioethanol production due to its high cellulose (30–40%) and hemicellulose (20–30%) content. However, the complex structure of lignocellulosic biomass, reinforced by lignin and silica, restricts enzyme accessibility to polysaccharides. Hence, pretreatment is essential to break down lignin and enhance enzyme digestibility before fermentation.

The unpredictable and frequently tumultuous nature of events affecting farming and rural life, such as weather patterns, market fluctuations, and policy changes, is referred to as uncertainty and chaos in agricultural extension, particularly with regard to livelihoods. These factors can interfere with farmer income and agricultural output, making it difficult for extension agencies to offer consistent assistance. Adaptive management techniques, such as encouraging diversified farming methods, boosting early warning systems for weather and market trends, and improving education and training for resilience development, are necessary to address these problems. Data-driven decision-making, adaptable policy frameworks, and cooperative efforts with local communities can all aid in managing uncertainty and averting chaos, which will eventually support more stable and sustainable livelihoods for farmers.

1. To delineate the present status of transforming and transformed livelihood in present terrains of social ecologies.

The major source of water supply on the earth is precipitation. The water received at the earth’s surface from the atmosphere either in solid or liquid form is called precipitation. The water received in solid form may be snow or hail. The precipitation is seasonal in character in many parts of the world. The precipitation may occur due to –
• Conventional physical process
• Orographic effect and
• Convergence of air masses
3.1. Conventional Physical Process
It occurs when the air on the surface of the earth and few metres above the surface of the earth is heated by absorbing long wave radiation emitted by the earth’s surface. As the air is heated, it becomes lighter. The water vapour formed due to evaporation from the soil surface or water bodies will mix with the air and the air will be moist. When the moist air gets heated it becomes lighter and rises vertically upwards. After reaching certain height, the air gets cooled enough to get saturated with water vapour. The moisture in the saturated air will condense on small solid particles to form tiny drops. These solid particles may be dust or smoke or solid particles suspended in the atmosphere and are called aerosols.

It is estimated that the world requires nearly 70 per cent increase in agriculture production to meet the demand for food by the year 2050 based on current trends in population growth it can be achieved either by increasing land under cultivation (which is not possible), increasing the availability of more water for agriculture and efficient utilisation of available land and water resources. The best available option is to increase in productivity of unit of land for unit water. However, the availability of water for agriculture production cannot be presumed to be same year after year as the major source of water is precipitation more known for its uncertainty due to change in weather patterns from season to season and year to year all over the world. The element of uncertainty is increasing since the beginning of the present century due to climate change under the present circumstance, the crop production is practiced -

For increasing crop production under irrigated condition, it is necessary to identify crops and varieties that can produce more yield per unit of water even when there is some decrease in availability of water through irrigation. Therefore, the concept of water production function is used for evaluation of water use efficiency of the crops.

Stress is force per unit area. When matter is subjected to stress; it may undergo changes in size, shape and displacement. Plants are grown in open environment and are likely to experience stress due to environmental conditions or when subjected to pests and diseases. The stress experienced by plants due to environmental conditions is called abiotic stresses. These include stresses caused by weather factors and climatic conditions and include moisture stress and thermal stress. The plants may also experience stress due to strong winds, dryness and as well as humid conditions (Fig.8.1).
The plants are generally classified into three types depending upon the ability to cope up with moisture stress as exhibited by-
• Drought resistance
• Drought tolerance
• Drought adaptations
The moisture stress may be to shortage of Water Compared to its requirements for evapotranspiration and metabolic activities. The plants may also suffer moisture

Remote sensing involves measurement of the physical properties of a body without actual contact with it. It is based on the reflectance when the electromagnetic radiation is incident upon a body or surface. The spectral characteristics of the reflected radiation vary depending upon the nature and condition of the surface. In case of vegetation, it absorbs light and can reflect light in the visible range. The leaf pigments dominate the reflectance properties (Fig.9.1). The radiation bands within which the reflectance of electromagnetic radiation takes place are classified as follows-

9.1. Vegetation Indices
The vegetation index is a mathematical expression that uses spectral imaging data to characterize the health and growth of the vegetation indices are calculated using data collected by remote sensors like Satellites. The vegetation indices have wide range of applications in agriculture and hydrology including
• Classification of vegetation
• Apex health of vegetation
• Changes in land cover
• Drought monitoring
• Estimation of soil moisture
• Evaluate crop growth, vigour, biomass and chlorophyll content
• Irrigation scheduling

The purpose of irrigation scheduling is to decide upon the amount of water to be applied for irrigation and timing of irrigation in order to avoid wastage of precious water. The irrigation scheduling is also used to determine the number of irrigations required for a crop during its growth cycle and judicious use of water depending upon the weather forecasts issued from time to time. The irrigation scheduling has to be planned for either full irrigation or supplementary irrigation depending upon the availability of water resources and the season during which crops are grown. Crops grown during the dry season requires full irrigation and crops grown during the rainy season require supplementary irrigation. The third category of irrigation is protective irrigation which is practiced in dryland areas. The protective irrigation is given when the crops are experiencing severe moisture stress due to prolonged dry spells wherever the farmers has access to small ponds and tanks developed within his own field as water harvesting structures.
10.1. Full Irrigation
Under full irrigation, the crops are provided with irrigation right from land preparation till the crop is getting ready for harvest maturity. The full irrigation will be usually planned for maximum yields of the crop (Fig.10.1).

A watershed is an area that provides pathway to the surface or sub surface water flow to a given drainage system. The watershed is a hydrological unit. The area of watershed may vary from few hectares to thousands of square kilometres. The watershed development involves effective management of land and vegetation in order to conserve and improve the quantity of water. The watershed development is a comprehensive and sustainable solution to water conservation (Fig.13.1).
The watershed development has several advantages. It helps in
• Conservation, upgradation and utilization of natural resources particularly land, water and vegetation
• Minimise the inequalities between rainfed and irrigated areas
• Promoting cost effective adoptable simple technologies
• Supply water for domestic ,agricultural and industrial use
• Poverty alleviation and employment generation
• Reducing chemical pollution
• Adopting flood control measures by constructing water storage or impounding structures

Hydrometeorology forecasting is limited to forecasting of occurrence of rainfall to a greater extent. Although several countries all over the world have developed and established hydrometorological forecasting with focus on occurrence of floods and droughts, still there is very limited success. Floods are associated with occurrence of continuous heavy rainfall due to movement of low-pressure systems like cyclones and depression overflow into rivers, reservoirs and breaching of bunds. In countries like India, the floods occur on the average in 70 lakh hectors of area and the economic loss due to floods and expenditure on relief operations mounting year after year besides loss of life. Foods occur at all of a sudden leaving little time for planning mitigation or rescue operation. Flood forecasting in based on impact assessment of heavy rainfall assessments to identify the exact area that is likely to be affected. It requires more intensive research. Forecasting of droughts is still an area of serious concern. There is need to strengthen regional capabilities to develop forecasting techniques for occurrence of flood and droughts through proper analysis of historical data in conjunction with meteorological forecasts and remote sensing data. Though flood alerts are issued, the identification of exact area and the extent to which flood impacts are not very clear most of the times heavy rainfall warnings are not just sufficient until and unless the vulnerable areas can be clearly specified. The medium range forecasting will be extremely useful for issuing flood alerts.
14.1. Forecasting Droughts
Long range forecasting of seasonal rainfall can indicate the possibility of receiving excess or deficit rainfall over larger regions. In India, there is considerable progress in development of long range forecast of Southwest monsoon rainfall. This forecast also indicating the regions which may get surplus or deficit rainfall and for indifferent parts of a given region as well. However, there is serious dearth of local expertise to further analyse and interpret the long-range forecast for a given area on the basis of local climate data. The advantages of reliable long-range forecast are still unexpected. Almost one fifth of the area in India gets affected by draught most of the years. The drought affects are more severe in arid and semi arid regions. Prediction of occurrence of drought and its intensity, period of occurrence and the areas to be affected by drought is very important. During recent years, there is considerable increase in the occurrence of droughts due to climate change which is attributed mainly to atmospheric pollution. The physics of the pollution is consistent and not the policies support in handling hydrometerological disasters. There are instances where in flood and droughts occurred in the same

The world of agriculture is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by advances in technology, data analytics, and citizen science. Smart farming, also known as precision agriculture, has emerged as a key driver of this transformation, enabling farmers to optimize crop yields, reduce waste, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. However, the full potential of smart farming can only be realized by integrating it with citizen science and agrometeorological advisories. Citizen science, which involves the participation of citizens in scientific research, has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach agriculture. By engaging citizens in the collection and analysis of data on weather conditions, soil health, and crop health, we can create a more inclusive and effective agricultural system. Agrometeorological advisories, which provide weather-based agricultural advice to farmers, can also be enhanced through the integration of citizen science data (Fig.10.1).
This book chapter explores the potential of bridging the gap between citizen science, smart farming, and agrometeorological advisories. We examine the current state of these fields, highlighting the opportunities and challenges associated with their integration. We also discuss the role of technology, including mobile apps and online platforms, in facilitating this integration and enhancing the effectiveness

1. Fix the organ or the animal in 5-10 % formalin preferably neutral buffered formalin. If the organ is an isolated thoracic limb, for example, then cannulate the axillary artery and perfuse the formalin. I find sometimes it is advantageous to pump some buffered saline solution to flush out any blood before pumping in the formalin. Organs, such as the heart, could be nicely flushed with water through major blood vessels, and immersed in formalin to fix. The same can be done with liver, kidney, etc. It takes a week for fixing a large structure (e.g., 10 kg) by immersing in formalin.
2. Dissect the specimen as needed. Remove all fat and clean as much as possible so the specimen looks nice.
3. If the specimen is dark brown, it can be lightened by leaving 1-2 days in 5% hydrogen peroxide. Check the specimen 1-2 times during the day to make sure desired light tone is achieved. Leaving it too long in the hydrogen peroxide may result in tissue degradation.
4. Drain the specimen well, and dehydrate in acetone. The dehydration should be thorough. To achieve this, use 100% acetone, at least 2-3 changes. The acetone can be recycled by repeated distillation. Acetone tends to evaporate, so use a container that has a tight lid. Acetone is also flammable, so use required precautions when handling acetone. If concentration of acetone remains up to 99% even after leaving organ for 4-5 days it is sure that dehydration is complete. If you are using any thin sheets of organ or Brain for dehydration keep slice between glass plates and then dehydrate.
5. Immerse the specimen in glycerin. Buy industrial glycerin, which may be cheaper. It may take 2-3 weeks for the glycerin to permeate into the tissues.

Sectioning of tissue is carried out by using an instrument called microtome and the procedure is known as microtomy. Most commonly used microtome is HYPERLINK http://paramedicsworld.com/microtome/ rotary microtome which allows the perfect sectioning of the paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. For histological purposes, section cutting is done at the thickness of 4-6 microns whereas for histochemical staining techniques, the thickness of sections may be increased.
Pre-steps involved in tissue section cutting
1. Ensure that microtome is placed on an even surface so that it will not be shaken during the procedure of section cutting
2. Ensure that Knob for the rotating handle of microtome is locked to avoid cutting the fingers of handler of microtome while fixing the blade in its holder
3. Ensure that paraffin shavings from the previous section cutting were removed from the various parts of microtome for smooth functioning of microtome
4. Thermostatically controlled water bath or tissue flotation bath should be kept ready with filled water to heat
5. Ice cubes should be kept ready in the refrigerator. Success of sectioning can be greatly improved by cooling the wax blocks before subjecting them to cut. To properly cool the blocks, placing them on a piece of aluminum foil on a levelled tray of ice for at least five minutes before sectioning is preferable. Chilled paraffin wax is harder and in general it allows thinner and higher quality sections .Cooling both the tissue and wax giving them a similar consistency, in addition to a smaller amount of water will be absorbed into the tissue and making sectioning easier.

A protein that is deposited in various tissues of body called amyloid. Amyloidosis is a disorder of protein folding, in which normally soluble proteins accumulate in the tissues as abnormal insoluble fibrils (or filaments), thus disrupting their function The deposited proteins, generically known as amyloid, damage the structure and function of the tissues and so cause serious disease which is often fatal when it affects major organs. There are several techniques to observe the amyloid which is as follows.
Highman’s Congo Red Technique

1) Sections to water, removing pigment where necessary.
2) Stain in Congo red solution, 5 minutes.
3) Differentiate with the alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution, 3-10 seconds.
4) Wash in water, stain nuclei in alum hematoxylin and differentiate blue.
5) Dehydrate, clear, and mount.

Protocol
Prepare tissue
Weigh 25 mg of tissue, add approximately 3 ml of 0.8 per cent of normal saline. Homogenize the tissue with homogenizer or with mortar and pestle. Transfer the homogenized tissue with saline to a microcentrifuge tube. Centrifuge at 14000 rpm for 10 minutes. Discard the supernatant and use the pelleted tissue for further lysis.
Digest tissue
Add 180 μl of resuspension buffer and 20 μl of Proteinase K solution to the pelleted tissue in microcentrifuge tube. Mix by vortexing. Incubate the sample at 55oC until the tissue is completely digested (2-4 hours) in a shaking water bath. Vortex briefly after complete digestion.

Since its founding in the early 2000s, Scopus - which describes itself as a “source-neutral abstract and citation database curated by independent subjectmatter experts” — has been recognized as one of the top research indexes. At the time of writing this blog post, Scopus includes over 25,100 titles from 5,000 publishers, spanning 240 academic disciplines - with a staggering 76.8 million core records. Scopus encompasses research across scholarly disciplines but consists primarily of science and technology articles (Fig. 4.1).
There are many benefits to having journals added to the Scopus database. In addition to its extensive content coverage encompassing virtually all subjects, Scopus is known for its high level of academic rigor, including an annual journal re-evaluation process, which it requires as “an incentive for journals to maintain their high content quality.”
Scopus also provides a wide range of metrics for indexed content, including
• Journal-level metrics such as Citescore, which both publishes an annual impact score and gives monthly updates on how things are currently shaping up for each of the indexed titles via the CiteScore Tracker
• Article-level metrics such as PlumX, which analyzes how readers are responding to content in the broader online context (i.e., via tweets, blogs, Wikipedia references, etc.)
• Author-level metrics such as the h-index, which aims to provide an objective measure of the overall impact of individual authors’ publication histories.

Increased importance of research publications, impact factor and citations as metrics in evaluating science and assessing the quality of research is driving unethical practices too in research and publications. Adding to that, limited access to research publications, exuberant subscription charges, heavy article processing charges and several other transboundary science and technology issues are further dividing the scientific community which is severely impacting the progress of the Nation (Pathak, 2025). The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) journal rating system serves as a cornerstone for researchers in India, particularly in the domain of agricultural sciences. Its significance lies in providing an accessible and systematic framework for evaluating the quality and relevance of academic journals. This chapter explores avenues for enhancing the NAAS journal rating methodologies to ensure greater accuracy, inclusivity, and ethical rigor in the assessment process. By integrating global best practices, incorporating diverse metrics, and addressing emerging challenges in the academic publishing landscape, the proposed framework aims to make NAAS ratings more robust and globally competitive. To enable universal access to scholarly scientific literature, under Aatmanirbhar Bharat it would be appropriate to strengthen our own Indian Journals to compete globally in the long run. In this regard, NAAS rating of Agri-journals has been a progressive step and NAAS should continue to upgrade its evaluation mechanism. The Professional Association of Agricultural Societies (PAAS) and NAAS partnership in upgrading of publications in Indian society journals should be encouraged.

In the world of academic publishing, Article Processing Charges (APCs) have emerged as a significant barrier, particularly for researchers from countries with limited resources like India. These charges, often levied by open-access journals to cover the costs of peer review, editing, and dissemination, have created a financial divide that impedes equitable access to scholarly communication. This chapter delves into the multifaceted challenges posed by APCs and outlines potential solutions to address the inequities they perpetuate (Fig. 6.1).
6.1. The Burden of Article Processing Charges
The financial burden of APCs is disproportionately felt by researchers in developing nations. Many prestigious open-access journals charge APCs ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 or more per article. For researchers in high-income countries, these charges might be manageable, supported by robust institutional funding or grants. However, for their counterparts in countries like India, where research funding is limited and often tied to modest institutional budgets, such costs are prohibitive. The disparity in income and currency exchange rates further amplifies this challenge. A charge of $2,000, for instance, could equate to several months’ salary for a researcher in India, compared to a fraction of that amount for a researcher in the United States or Europe.

In the evolving landscape of agricultural sciences, integrative research models have emerged as a cornerstone for addressing complex, multifaceted challenges. These models bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and their practical applications, ensuring that innovations are not just conceptual but also actionable and impactful. This chapter delves into the essence of integrative research models, highlighting their significance, successful case studies, and strategies to foster their adoption and effectiveness in agricultural progress.
8.1. The Need for Integrative Research Models
Agriculture today is at the nexus of critical global challenges, including climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity. Traditional, siloed research approaches often fall short in addressing these interconnected issues. Integrative research models offer a paradigm shift by combining insights from diverse disciplines such as agronomy, ecology, economics, data science, and social sciences. This approach not only enhances the depth of understanding but also ensures that solutions are holistic and sustainable (Fig. 8.1).
One of the primary drivers for adopting integrative research models is the increasing complexity of agricultural systems. Modern agriculture is no longer

Global agricultural research, an essential field in ensuring food security and sustainable development, is heavily influenced by the academic and publishing ecosystems in Europe and North America. This chapter examines the challenges faced by researchers from developing regions, focusing on limited representation in editorial boards, barriers to accessing high-impact journals, and the overarching dominance of Western institutions (Fig. 9.1).
These issues underscore the need for greater inclusivity and recognition of regional expertise to foster a more equitable global research landscape.
9.1. Dominance of Europe and North America in Agricultural Research
Publishing
The dominance of Europe and North America in agricultural research publishing is evident from the distribution of international journals in agriculture and allied disciplines. Approximately 75% of these journals originate from these regions. Breaking this down further:
• Europe accounts for 43.6% of international journals, with leading contributors including the United Kingdom (14.1%), the Netherlands (8.5%), Germany (6.2%), France (4.3%), Italy (3.5%), and other European countries (7.0%).
• North America contributes 31.4%, with the United States alone publishing 28.5% and Canada accounting for 2.9%.

The credibility of academic publishing hinges significantly on the integrity of journal rating systems. These systems, designed to evaluate and rank academic journals based on various metrics, play a pivotal role in shaping research priorities, funding allocations, and academic career trajectories. However, despite their importance, many journal rating systems are criticized for lacking transparency and ethical rigor (Fig. 10.1).
This chapter explores these shortcomings, focusing on potential biases embedded in current systems and proposing solutions to enhance their transparency and fairness.
10.1. Role of Journal Rating Systems in Academic Publishing
Journal rating systems serve as gatekeepers in the academic publishing ecosystem. They influence where researchers choose to publish their work, how institutions evaluate scholarly output, and how funding agencies allocate resources. Metrics such as impact factor, h-index, and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) are commonly used to rank journals. These metrics, while useful, often reduce the multifaceted nature of scholarly impact into single numerical values, potentially oversimplifying and distorting the evaluation process. The reliance on these metrics creates a feedback loop wherein highly ranked journals attract more submissions, increasing their citation counts and reinforcing their dominance. This system can marginalize smaller or niche journals that publish

Predatory journals undermine the integrity of academic publishing by charging exorbitant fees without providing rigorous peer review. These deceptive entities exploit the academic community, especially targeting early-career researchers, those from underfunded institutions, and scholars in developing countries. By prioritizing profit over quality, predatory journals erode trust in the research ecosystem, dilute scientific knowledge, and tarnish the reputation of genuine academic endeavors (Fig. 11.1).
This chapter delves into the multifaceted challenges posed by predatory journals and outlines comprehensive strategies for researchers, institutions, and policymakers to combat their pernicious effects.
11.1. Understanding Predatory Journals
Predatory journals are characterized by their lack of transparency, absence of editorial rigor, and aggressive solicitation of authors. They often masquerade as legitimate open-access journals but fail to adhere to the ethical standards of scholarly publishing. Unlike reputable journals, which uphold rigorous peer-review processes to ensure the validity and originality of research, predatory journals accept articles with minimal or no scrutiny. This results in the dissemination of low-quality or even fraudulent research, undermining the credibility of academic literature.
Several red flags can help researchers identify predatory journals. These include:

National journals play a crucial role in the dissemination of regionally relevant research, particularly in specialized fields such as agricultural sciences. These journals act as accessible platforms for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share findings, innovations, and solutions tailored to local contexts. Strengthening national journals is essential for fostering knowledge exchange, promoting inclusivity in scientific communication, and addressing the unique challenges faced by different regions (Fig. 12.1).
This chapter explores strategies for improving the quality, visibility, and credibility of national journals, with examples from countries across the globe, including those outside North America and Europe. Case studies of successful initiatives are included to illustrate best practices for empowering local publishing platforms, with a particular focus on non-English publications.
12.1. The Importance of National Journals in Agricultural Sciences
Agricultural sciences are inherently context-dependent. Local factors such as climate, soil type, cropping systems, and socioeconomic conditions influence the challenges faced by farmers and the solutions that are most effective. National journals provide a vital medium for addressing these region-specific issues, enabling researchers to publish studies that may not align with the broader focus of international journals. Furthermore, these journals often cater to the immediate needs of local policymakers, extension workers, and educators, ensuring that research findings are translated into actionable outcomes.

The final chapter of this exploration into agricultural sciences casts a forward-looking lens on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. As global population levels continue to rise, with estimates suggesting we will surpass 9 billion people by 2050, the demand for sustainable and efficient agricultural practices has never been more urgent. Emerging challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and water scarcity, coupled with rapid technological advancements, are reshaping the landscape of agricultural research and publishing (Fig. 16.1).
This chapter delves into how the integration of advanced technologies, the promotion of open-access publishing, and global cooperation can revolutionize agricultural sciences. It also highlights the importance of equity, innovation, and adequate funding in driving this transformation.
16.1. Advanced Technologies and Their Transformative Potential
In the past decade, advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and big data analytics have become central to scientific inquiry. These tools are now increasingly being applied to agricultural research, offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation. For example, AI-powered predictive models can help forecast crop yields, pest outbreaks, and weather

While evaluating Indian Journals of Agricultural and Allied Sciences, comprehensive and inclusive databases with many characteristics listed below should be adopted so as to ensure equal focus and benefit from international exposure:
• The database should have regional and multi-lingual journals with proper translation or abstracting, interdisciplinary research output, more and new journals/technical reports/official scientific documents/conference proceedings etc, open access for smaller journals to ensure readily accessible cutting-edge research in agriculture
• The database should provide more nuanced metrics that value realistic impact and localized research contributions considering immediate practical applications
• The database should include a wide range of journals across diverse disciplines, including agriculture, forestry, veterinary sciences, and environmental science with more inclusion of regional and specialized journals, providing access to a broader spectrum of agricultural research
• The database should emphasis on journals from developing regions, which often publish research addressing local agricultural challenges. This diversity helps in showcasing research contributions from regions/countries with significant agricultural economies
• The database of agriculture-related journals should overlap with other related fields viz., environmental science, biology, and social sciences, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of agriculture. This helps researchers access a more comprehensive set of resources
• The database have detailed subject areas, allowing researchers to pinpoint agricultural science journals within relevant subfields like:

Quantitative genetics is the study of continuous or quantitative traits and their underlying mechanisms. The main principals of quantitative genetics developed in the 20th century was largely in response to the rediscovery of Mendelian genetics. Mendelian genetics in 1900 centered attention on the inheritance of discrete characters, e.g., smooth vs. wrinkled peas, purple vs. white flowers. This focus was in stark contrast to the branch of genetic analysis by Sir Francis Galton in the 1870’s and 1880’s who focused on characteristics that were continuously variable and thus, not clearly separable into discrete classes. A contentious debate ensued between Mendelians and Biometricians regarding whether discrete characteristics have the same hereditary and evolutionary properties as continuously varying characteristics. I The Mendelians (led by William Bateson) believed that variation in discrete characters drove evolution through mutations with large effects I The Biometricians (led by Karl Pearson and W.F.R. Weldon) viewed evolution to be the result of natural selection acting on continuously distributed characteristics. This eventually led to a fusion of genetics and Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection: main principals of quantitative genetics, developed independently by Ronald Fisher (1918) and Sewall Wright (1921), arguable the two most prominent evolutionary biologists.
Interestingly, Galton’s methodological approaches to continuously distributed traits marked the founding of the Biometrical school, which is what many consider to be the birth of modern statistics. Karl Pearson was inspired greatly by Galton, and he went on to develop a number of methods for the analysis of quantitative traits. We will talk more about Galton and Pearson later on in this course. One of the central goals of quantitative genetics is the quantification of the correspondence between phenotypic and genotypic values. It is well accepted that variation in quantitative traits can be attributable to many, possibly interacting, genes whose expression may be sensitive to the environment

The amount of variation is measured and expressed as the variance. When values are expressed as deviations from the population mean the variance is simple the mean of the squared values. For example, the genotypic variance is the variance of genotypic values and the environmental variance is the variance of environmental deviations. The total variance is the phenotypic variance of the variance of phenotypic values, and is the sum of the separate components.
Components of Variance
The components of variance and the values whose variance they measure are listed as follows:

As a consequence, a close relationship between the breeder and the science, application and theory has been nurtured.
History of Animal Breeding

Natural Selection
In nature, the main force responsible for selection is of interest because of its apparent effectiveness and because of principles involved. Some of the most interesting cases of natural selection are those involving man himself. All races of man that now exist belong to the same species, because the races are interfile or have been in all instances where mating have been made between them. All races of man now in existence had a common origin and at one time probably all man had the some kind of skim pigmentation – which kind we have no sure way of knowing. As the number of generations of man increased, mutations occurred in the genes affecting pigmentation of the skin causing genetic variations in this trait over a range from light to dark or black.
Natural selection is a very complicated process and many factors determine the proportion of individuals that will reproduce. Among these factors are differences in mortality of the individuals in the population especially early in life, differences in the duration of the period of sexual activity and in the degree of sexual activity itself and the differences in the degree of fertility of individuals in the population. They are also examples of adaptive evolution.

Tandem Selection
Selection is practiced for one trait at a time until satisfactory improvement has been achieved in this trait. Then, selection efforts for this trait are relaxed and efforts are directed towards the improvement of a second, then for a third and so on, until finally each trait has been improved to the desired level. This method is the least efficient of all the three methods, from the stand point of the amount of genetic progress made for the time and effort by the breeder. Efficiency of tandem selection depends a great deal upon the genetic correlation between the traits selected for. If the genetic correlation is positive and desirable, improvement in one trait by selection would automatically result in improvement in the other trait not selected for, and then the method could be quite efficient. Otherwise, if there were little or no genetic correlation between the traits, which means that they are inherited independently, the efficiency would be less. When the two traits are negatively correlated, improvement in one trait is nullified or neutralized by the regression in the other. For example, in poultry, selection for egg number will result in reduction in egg weight, as they are negatively correlated.
Independent Culling Level (ICL) Method
Method of selecting two or more traits but they both need to meet a minimum standard. It is very strict that if the animal didn’t meet one trait it would be rejected. Independent Culling level (ICL) Method selects several characteristics or traits simultaneously.
Breeders set minimum or maximum culling levels or standards or criteria for each trait of selection objectives. Any animal not meeting all criteria is not selected for use in the breeding program regardless of the level of excellence of other traits. With each successive generation of progeny, the minimum quality of each characteristic is raised thus ensuring improvement of these traits. For example, a breeder has a view of the minimum requirements for milk yield, fat yield, and service period for which cows are breeding. The breeder will determine what the minimum acceptable quality for each of these traits will be for progeny to be folded back into her breeding program. Any animal that fails to meet the quality threshold for any one of these criteria is culled from the breeding program. Thereby, it causes the loss of excellent genes from the population for a particular trait.

Combining Ability Estimation
Crosses made in a definite fashion are a prerequisite for combining ability estimation. Estimated by half-sib (GCA) and full-sib (SCA) mating. Various steps like parent selection for crosses, performing crosses, their evaluation, and interpretation are involved while estimating of combining ability. For analysis of crosses, biometrical techniques like diallel analysis, partial diallel, and Line x tester analysis are used. If GCA variance is higher than SCA variance the importance of AGA & parent selection will be effective for the improvement of such traits. If SCA variance is higher than GCA variance there is importance of NAGA( dominance & epistasis) & Heterosis breeding may be rewarding. If GCA=SCA variance then AGA & NAGA are equally important in the expression of character, In this situation reciprocal recurrent selection may be adopted for population improvement.
Selection for GCA
General combining ability (GCA) is the average value of the inbred line based on its behavior in crosses with other lines. The mean performance of the line is expressed as deviation from the mean of all crosses.GCA is owing to the activity of genes which are largely additive in their effects as well as additive × additive interactions.

There is urgent need to increase the production in order to meet the demand for the exploding population. This could be achieved by applying various modern methodologies in selection and breeding of livestock. Increasing the productivity through genetic improvement requires adequate identification and intensive selection of genetically superior sires. About 93 per cent of the total herd improvement comes from breeding of young bulls from tested sires and only six per cent from selection of dams.
With the advances in artificial insemination and cryopreservation of semen, a sire has a potential of serving 3/4th million cows and producing 1/4th million progenies.
Thus, selection of bulls is of great importance in dairy herd improvement.
For maximising the genetic gain by sire selection, it is essential that the method of estimating breeding values of sires should be unbiased and efficient. The breeding value refers to the average genetic effect of the genes passed on by the individual to its offspring and is estimated to know whether the individual is genetically superior to other individuals or not for the trait concerned.
