Introduction

Every time a part of an organism is removed, the action of bacteria will soon disintegrate, dry or putrefy it. They must be kept as close to normal as possible or in other words preserved and fixed in order to study these. Chemicals are required in many practical of Biology. Some of these chemicals preserve and specifically colour certain cell parts while others are used as solutions. You will learn about certain fixatives (preservatives) and stains in this chapter.

Objectives

Introduction

The tendency of two or more genes to stay together during inheritance is known as linkage and it is the consequence of the concerned genes being located in the same chromosome. Linked genes do not show independent segregation, as a result the ratios obtained in F₂ and test cross generation are significantly different from the expected ratios of 9:3:3:1 and 1:1:1:1, respectively.

Detection of linkage χ² using test

In genetic experiments, when the material under study is segregating simultaneously for two characters, it may be of interest to know whether the two characters are inherited independently or they are linked. The χ² test can be used for this purpose. χ² test is used in detecting linkage in back crosses and inter crosses.

First the χ² is computed based on the theoretical segregating ratios. If χ² is not significant it may be concluded that the loci segregate independently. If χ² is significant we may suspect linkage between the loci. The χ² is then partitioned into components assignable to different factors.

Introduction

All the genes that are linked together form a linkage group. Genes of a linkage group may be presented on a single straight line in the same order in which they are normally present on the concerned chromosome. The number of different linkage groups in a species is, as a rule, equals to its gametic chromosome number (n). The distance between two neighbouring genes is proportional to the frequency of recombination (%) between them depicted on a line drawing. Such a line drawing depicting the linked genes the recombination frequencies between them is known as Linkage map, Genetic map or Chromosome map. Linkage maps provide information on the genes that are linked together and the frequencies of recombination that may be expected between them. The frequency of recombination between two linked genes cannot exceed 50% which is the frequency in case of independent segregation.

Introduction

The concept of probability is basis to many principles of classical genetics (segregation, independent assortment etc.) The principals of population genetics are based on the considerations of laws of probability. Probability is the likelihood of occurrence of an event.

Trial

A trial refers to an opportunity provided for an event to occur, e.g. tossing of a coin once constitute one trial as it provides an opportunity for head or tail to occur. A new borne can be either a boy or a girl.

The discovery of mutagenic effects of X-rays on the fruit fly (Drosophila) by H. Muller in 1927 and by L. J. Stadler in barley and maize in 1928 paved the way for researchers to experiment with its effects on various organisms. In 1928, H. Stubbe showed the use of mutagenesis in producing mutants in crop plants like tomato, soybean and others. The first commercial mutant was produced in tobacco in 1934. Reports by B. Sigurbjornsson and A. Micke mentioned 77 cultivars that were developed through mutagenesis prior to 1995. In 1995, this number was 484. This number has since been significantly increased covering a large number of crops, namely, corn, wheat, pea, chrysanthemum, poinsettia, dahlia, citrus, apple, peach and the modified traits include plant maturity, winter hardiness, lodging resistance, protein and lysine content and numerous ornamental mutants. By the end of 20th century, the number of mutant varieties rose to 2252 covering a range of crops like cereals, oilseeds, pulses, vegetables, fruits, fibres, and ornamentals. Majority of these mutants were released as direct mutants and the rest as a result of cross breeding with the mutants. Most of the mutant varieties have come as a result of using physical mutagens (X-rays, gamma rays, thermal and fast neutrons) with gamma rays alone accounting for more than 60% of the mutant varieties. By 2017, nearly 3250 mutant varieties belonging to 175 plant species have been developed and released where China, Japan, India, Russia, the Netherlands, Germany and USA are the leading countries. India with 345 commercialized mutants stands third after China (810 mutants) and Japan (481 mutants). Thus mutation breeding is a significant contributor to the development and release of commercial cultivars in several crops and for several traits.

The concept of recurrent selection grew out of need to increase the number of superior genotypes that could be obtained from breeding stock of corn. This could have been possible by increasing the frequency of superior genes in the gene pool and by increasing the chances for genetic recombination to occur. Both can be achieved by recurrent selection which is defined as “a method of breeding designed to concentrate favourable genes scattered among a number of individuals by selecting in each generation among the progeny produced by mating inter se of the selected individuals (or their selfed progeny) of the previous generation.” The original idea behind recurrent selection was proposed first by Hayes and Gerber in 1919 and independently by East and Jones in 1920. Jenkins (1940) was the first to describe the method in detail and Hull (1945) proposed the name ‘recurrent selection’. Each cycle of recurrent selection requires (i) evaluation and selfing of selections and (ii) crossing of the progenies of superior selfed plants in all combinations and bulking of equal amount of seed from each cross. The selection of plants before selfing is possible for maturity, plant height, ear/head characters, kernel characteristics and resistance to diseases and insects. In general, these are the characters which have high heritability. It is clear that the selection of plants before selfing is more for morphological traits and these evaluations do not include yield. Yield evaluations are done on the top cross progenies (crossing of selected plants to a tester). Such top crosses will be grown in the second year of the cycle during which time the selfed seed is held over until the evaluations for yield are over. Or the selfed seed may be grown out as S₁ lines which in turn are selfed. After yield evaluation is over, the selfed seed of superior plants is grown out for crossing. Progenies of selfed plants are crossed in all possible combinations. This is done manually or by growing progenies together in an isolated block. In isolation planting, random mating should be ensured. After manual crossing or random mating in isolation, equal amounts of seed of each are bulked and this bulk seed is used to start the second cycle of selection, selfing and crossing.

When conditions in the plant growing environment are less than the optimum, the plants experience stress which is broadly termed as abiotic stress. Major abiotic stresses impacting crop yield significantly are as follows (Grover et al., 2004; Acquaah, 2007):

Drought: This is the environmental condition caused by lack of adequate rainfall. This is also termed as water stress or desiccation stress. Effects of drought on crop plants are complex and variable and are greatly accentuated by a number of interacting factors. The onset of drought in general has been observed to reduce germination, emergence, hypocotyl length, water uptake and the mobilization of dry matter reserves even at the early growth stages. Drought stress causes a marked reduction in leaf area. Soil moisture availability at the seed germination, anthesis and at post-anthesis growth stages determines as to what extent production potential of crops would be expected in drought-prone situations.

The yield losses in field crops may be attributed to inadequate water availability at the critical growth stages. Crops therefore differ in their susceptibility of growth stages to water stress. Stress exposed plants immediately lower down relative water content (RWC) of their leaves, leaf water potential, osmotic potential. Turgor pressure may also be decreased unless plants have finally adapted to drought by opening of stomata again and improving the water potential. It has been reported that low leaf expansion rate at the early stage and accelerated leaf senescence accompanied by mortality of older leaves at later stage decreases total leaf green area.

When there is indication of linkage from F or testcross data through significant deviation from 9: 3: 3: 1 and 1: 1: 1: 1 ratio, it is implied that independent assortment is not taking place and this is taken as an indication of linkage. The inverse of linkage strength is the recombination value and is often symbolized by ‘p’ whose maximum value is 50% because out of four strands of a tetrad, two are always parental types and two are recombinant types when all the cells show crossing over.

1.1 WHAT IS PLANT PROPAGATION?

Propagation of plant is defined as multiplication and perpetuation of new individuals from a selected plant having all the characters of the original one. It is the process of increasing the number of plants of a particular species or cultivar. It refers to the multiplication of an individual plant or group of plants, which have specific value to mankind. New plants or new individuals are required for establishing new plantings/new gardens/new orchards.

Precision farming involves the collection of data by observation and measurement, and the subsequent response. Sensing is key to the collection of data; whether this is remote from space by satellites, by aircraft or drones, or by proximal sensors used on the ground, mounted on vehicles or otherwise. Responses are increasingly automated and data are often integrated into wholefarm management systems. Early commercial applications were directed towards improving crop nutrition, however, utilising precision technologies to control weeds, pests and diseases is now a reality.

Precision crop protection requires detailed data on the occurrence and distribution of problems at the earliest possible stage of detection. An early detection is the key for successful management of pests in precision farming. Some of the key aspects are:

Identification: Identifications of crops, targets and beneficial; temporal and spatial distribution: presence of the target before, during and after the crop growth period;

Sampling techniques: statistically valid sampling regimes must be used to permit an accurate view of any problem

Thresholds: under particular circumstances, the point at which action to ensure levels of infestation or damage are kept to those deemed to be acceptable;

Prediction: the speed and pattern of development of a problem must be capable of being modelled, e.g. spread and severity of insect pests and fungal diseases; weed emergence according to species, dormancy and environmental conditions.

Apple is the pomaceous fruit (Malus domestica) in the rose family (Rosaceae). It is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits, and the most widely known of the many members of genus Malus that are used by humans.

The apple originated in South-West Asia which includes Asia Minor, the Caucasus, Soviet Central Asia, Himalayan India and Pakistan. It is grown extensively in the temperate region. The major apple growing countries are Australia, Argentina, Brazil, China, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Gemany, USA, India, etc. In India states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and mountanous region of Uttar Pradesh are the major apple producers.

Cultivars/Varieties: The apple varieties are divided into three groups based on their maturing periods. The early season varieties grown in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttranchal are: Tydeman’s Early(P), Irish Peach, Early Shanburry(P), Michael Molies, Benoni Fenny, Benoni Delicious, Schlomit Starkrimson, and Chaubattia Princess. The Mid season varieties are: American Mother, Red Delicious, Richared Razakwar, Starking Delicious, Vance Delicious, Jonathan(P), McIntosh(P), Top Red Lord Lam, Cox’s Orange Pippin(P), Cortland bourne(P), Red Chief, Red Gold(P), Golden Delicious(P), Oregon Spur, Queen,s Apple, Redspur, Rome Beauty, Scarlet Siberian. The late season varieties are: Golden Delicious(P), King’s Pippin, Rymer, Yellow Newton(P), American Apirouge, Buckingham(P), Winter Banana, Kerry Pippin, Granny Smith(P), Sunhari Chamure, Golden Delicious(P), Red Delicious, Ambri Baldwin, and Yellow Newton(P).

Bael (Aegle marmelos, L.) belongs to the family Rutaceae and is an important indigenous fruit of India known since 2000-820 BC. Bael is considered to be native to India and is grown all over the country. It is also seen in south east Asian countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Indonesia and Thailand. It is a hardy plant and can be grown even on marginal soils.

The leaves are trifoliate and aromatic. The leaves of the tree are used in religious offerings. The fruit is usually globose, grey or yellowish with small hard aromatic rind. The pulp is thick mucilaginous, orange yellow in colour with sweet scented aroma. The importance of bael fruit lies in its curative properties. It is used in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties.

There are no recognized or improved varieties of bael with a standard name. It usually goes with the name of locality or region it is grown in. Ayodhya, Etawah, Faizabad Local, Gonda Selection, Kagzi Bael, Kagzi Kalan, Mirzapuri, Darogaji, Ojha, Rampuri Azamati, Khamaria, Deoria Large, Gonda-1 and NB-5 are a few to name.

Uses

Bael fruits cut in half, or the soft types broken open, and the pulp, dressed with palm sugar, eaten for breakfast, as is a common practice in Indonesia. The pulp is often processed as nectar or “squash” (diluted nectar). A popular drink (called “sherbet” in India) is made by beating the seeded pulp together with milk and sugar. A beverage is also made by combining bael fruit pulp with that of tamarind. These drinks are consumed perhaps less as food or refreshment than for their medicinal effects.

Mature but still unripe fruits are made into jam, with the addition of citric acid. The pulp is also converted into marmalade or sirup, likewise for both food and therapeutic use, the marmalade being eaten at breakfast by those convalescing from diarrhea and dysentery. A firm jelly is made from the pulp alone, or, better still, combined with guava to modify the astringent flavor. The pulp is also pickled. The young leaves and shoots are eaten as a vegetable in Thailand and used to season food in Indonesia. They are said to reduce the appetite. An infusion of the flowers is a cooling drink. (Morton, 1987).

Mango (Mangifera indica L.), the choicest fruit of India, is said to be the king of fruits. Mango belongs to the family Anacardiaceae and genus Mangifera. The fruits are lusciously juicy, with pleasant aroma and sweet taste. In nutritive valve and popularity, no other fruit can match it. It is an outstanding source of vitamin A, a good source of vitamin C, apart from normal minerals and other vitamins. In, India, it occupies the same position as apple does in temperate countries and grapes in certain other regions.

According to de Candolle, mango has been under cultivation in India for over 4000 years. References indicate that Alexander the Great noticed a beautiful mango plantation in the Indus Valley in 327 BC. Early foreign traveller like Huen-tsang (632-645), Ibn-Haukul, (902-968 AD) Ibn- batuta (1325-1349 AD) and Ludovici de Varthema (1503-1508) also praised the mangoes grown in India and mentioned it in their travel notes.

Mango is native to southern Asia, especially eastern India, Burma, and the Andaman Islands. Besides India, mango is cultivated as a commercial crop in many countries, such as, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, the Fiji Island, Tropical Australia, Egypt, Israel, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, the USA (Florida, Hawaii and Puerto Rico), Mexico, Brazil, Haiti and West Indies.

Varietie/Hybrids: Dashehari, Langra, Chausa, Fazli, Malda and Bombay Green are the popular varieties in Northern and Central India. Alphonso, Kesar, Pairi, Rajapuri, Jamadar, and Totapuri are widely grown in Western India. Bangenapalli, Suvarnarekha, Neelum, Totapuri, Malgoa and Alphonso are popularly grown in Southern India and Gulabkhas, Kishen Bhog, Himsagar, Zardal, Fazli and Langra are grown mainly in Eastern part of the country. Mallika, Amrapali, Manjeera, Ratna, Niranjan, Neeleshan, Neelishwari, Neelphonso, Arka Aruna, Arka puneet, Arka Anmol, Sidhu and CISH-M1 are some of the hybird varieties available.

The history of gardening in India is older than civilizations of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa. During the pre-Aryan period (around 2500 B.C.), Indians were cultivating flowers and plants of religious significance. Later importance of gardening was not properly understood in India. But presently, importance of landscaping and gardening is realised by planners and landscaping has now become an integral part of any new establishment or property. Due to urbanization and industrialization, pollution has increased considerably and landscaping is one of the best options to reduce the problem. Landscaping is an art of beautifying a piece of land or garden or a landscape with planting materials and non-living materials in order to create a picturesque effect or to imitate nature in that particular land for human use. The importance of landscape gardening can be divided into three categories.

An unbranched evergreen tree of tropical and warm regions with a crown of very long feathered or fan-shaped leaves and typically having old leaf scars forming a regular pattern on the trunk. Palms have great ornamental value and are planted in the garden for special effects.

Palms are native of tropics and belong to Palmae or Arecaceae family. They are varied in forms, size and habit of growth. Palms do not increase in thickness and also do not show any distinction in bark wood and pith. Flowers are produced on spikes that hanged gracefully in many species. Inflorescences are highly diverse from large panicles with many orders of branching to simply spikes. Flowers may be bisexual or unisexual borne either on the same plant or on separate plant. Whereas, some palms are polygamous.

Introduction

Bird of Paradise is known as Strelitzia as its genus is Strelitzia. The shape of flower and its brilliant orange and blue colour it resembles bird and called bird of paradise. Due to unique appearance of the flower, it is exceptionally popular as a cut flower which appears periodically throughout the year. Commercial production of cut bloom is done in California, Hawaii, Israel, France, South Africa and Japan.

Bird of paradise occupies a place of pride in the garden and is an important choice for landscaping. It is grown in backyard and also for mass effect. Plants of strelitzia can be used in the landscape in a low growing ground cover to enhance the beauty of garden. They serve well anchoring island beds when surrounded by lower growing annuals or ground cover.

Introduction

Crossandra is an important traditional flower crop of South India. The word crossandra is derived from Greek words ‘krossoi’ meaning fringe and ‘aner’ meaning male, thus word crossandra means fringed stamens. It is grown for loose flower production and commonly used in temple offering and for making Gajras and Venis to use as hair adornments. Owing to their attractive colours, light weight and good keeping quality, crossandra flowers are ideal for garland making. Steady market demand and assured and regular income have made crossandra a profitable venture for South Indian farmers.

Genetics

The genus Crossandra belongs to family Acanthaceae. The diploid chromosome number of crossandra is 2n=40. This genus consists of around 50 species of tropical plants with only a few cultivated species such as Crossandra undulaefolia, C. mucronata, C. guineensis and C. sebacaulis. Crossandra undulaefolia is an important species which is grown for commercial value across the world.

Introduction

The WTO was established on 1^st January 1995 and is responsible for making and enforcing rules for trade between nations. WTO marks a major change in global trade rules. As an organization, it replaces the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trades (GATT), which had been in existence since 1947. The Eighth Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations under GATT, which started in Uruguay in 1986, was concluded in 1994, leading to the creation of WTO as the new permanent international trade organization. The role of WTO is much more extensive than that of GATT, which dealt with trade in goods. Apart from goods, the two other broad areas that WTO covers are services and intellectual property, which previously belonged to the domestic domain. Accordingly, WTO administers not only the Multilateral Trade Agreements (MTAs) in goods but also the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which came into existence with WTO. All the agreements annexed to the Agreement establishing the WTO were signed as part of a package deal. Member countries did not have the option of choosing some and rejecting others. Another important difference with the erstwhile GATT is that WTO has a stronger compliance mechanism (Chawla, 2007a).

As one of the WTO agreements, TRIPS is binding on all member countries of WTO. TRIPS aims at establishing strong minimum standards for intellectual property rights (IPRs). Apart from patents, intellectual property includes copyrights, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs, integrated circuits and trade secrets. The protection of IPRs is binding and legally enforceable. Intellectual property (IP) is a product of the mind. Intellectual property is intangible in contrast to real property (land) or physical property, which one can see, feel and use. With any type of property there are property rights. When IPs are expressed in a tangible form, they can also be protected. Intellectual property rights (IPRs) have been created to protect the right of individuals to enjoy their creations and discoveries. In fact, IPRs can be traced back to the fourteenth century, when European monarchs granted proprietary rights to writers for their literary works.

Cell and tissue culture techniques are becoming increasingly popular as alternative means of plant vegetative propagation. Plant tissue culture involves asexual methods of propagation and its primary goal is crop improvement. The success of many in vitro selection and genetic manipulation techniques in higher plants depends on the success of in vitro plant regeneration. Crop breeding and rDNA technology require the widespread use of reliable true to type propagation and better regeneration methods. Plant regeneration can be grouped in to different categories of enhanced release of axillary bud proliferation, organogenesis and embryogenesis. The oldest practical application of tissue culture techniques is the propagation of disease free plants from meristem tip culture. Meristem tip consisting of dome and one or two subjacent leaf primordial with a size up to 0.25 mm are aseptically cultured in appropriate nutrition media. The resulting plants are disease free because the pathogen is not generally present in the meristematic cells.

The aim of germplasm conservation is to ensure the availability of useful germplasm at any time. Breeding programs rely heavily on locally adapted ancient plant varieties and their wild relatives as sources of germplasm. Further, the continuing search for high yielding varieties of crop plants with resistance to pathogens and pests warrants the availability and maintenance of large collections of germplasm. In species which are propagated through seeds, it is economical to preserve the seeds. These seeds are dried to water content of 5 - 8% and then stored at a temperature of -18° C or lower and low humidity. In case of vegetatively propagated species, preservation of germplasm heavily taxes manpower and land resources. As in vitro techniques are becoming more important in crop improvement through the use of somatic cell genetics, the material produced in vitro will have to be conserved in vitro. The in vitro system is extremely suitable for storage of plant material, since in principle it can be stored on a small scale, disease free and under conditions that limit growth. Germplasm storage in vitro is crucial for the future development and safety of agriculture.

Introduction

Cucumber is one of the most popular vegetable of cucurbitacae family and grown worldwide for its freshly harvested fruits. Fruit yield in cucumber is suppressed due to its fruiting habit. Fruits developing from the first pollinated flower inhibit the development of subsequent fruits. This phenomenon is broadly known as crown fruit dominance or first fruit inhibition. Therefore, in mechanical once over harvest of seeded cucumber, only one to two fruits per plant are developed. Fruit set inhibition is less in seedless cucumber when compared to its seeded counter part. Parthenocarpy is the development of fruit without fertilization. This phenomenon was first studied in cucumber byNoll (1902) who introduced the term parthenocarpy. In parthenocarpic lines, a larger proportion of photosynthates could be diverted to fruit tissue instead of producing seeds. Partheonocarpic habit has become indispensable to greenhouse cucumber production because it alleviates the need for bees. Individual plants in the greenhouse produce many fruits simultaneously, with many fold higher yield in comparison to field grown crop.

Greenhouse or parthenocarpic cucumber production is very popular in many areas of the world. The fruits of parthenocarpic cucumber are mild in flavour, seedless and have thin edible skin that requires no peeling. Fruits are generally 10-14 inches in length and 200 g in weight. The parthenocarpic varieties require no pollination for fruit setting. If pollination occurs, the fruit will form seeds, shape of fruit will be destroyed and develop bitter taste. It is therefore essential to prevent bees and other pollinators entering the green houses. Cucumber cultivars are selected for commercial use based on quality and yield characteristics. An important quality factor is the shape of the cucumber referred to as the length to diameter (L/D) ratio. This becomes important to meet specifications of the number of whole cucumber units per container. The cool marine environment causes the L/D ratio of many cultivars to be undesirably long and therefore many of the useful cultivars for other production regions have been eliminate. The presently available parthenocarpic cucumber cultivars have been bred and developed in Europe under similar climatic conditions and produce fruit with desirable L/D ratios. The parthenocarpic cultivars have potential for improvement of both the L/D ratios and fruit interior quality.

Introduction

Germplasm identification as a part of a philosophy of consumer protection extends through the entire seed trade and allied industries, from plant breeders to food consumers. Increasingly, countries are introducing schemes for Plant Breeders (or germplasm) Rights. These reward breeders financially for their efforts and offer protection for their germplasm, but in turn require that new germplasm are distinct from others and also uniform and stable in the expression of their characteristics. Since, the genetic variations in plants and plant populations are of considerable interest to have desirable traits to develop a commercial variety. Biochemical and molecular biology based data and its analysis for information regarding selection have been realized of utmost importance.

Introduction

Indian subcontinent is one of the twelve mega diversity centres for cultivated plants and their wild relatives. More than 15000 species of flowering plants are indigenous to this region, which include 160 species of economic importance, 320 species of wild ancestral forms and approximately 800 species of ethnobotanical origin. Global diversity in vegetable crops is estimated around 400, of which 80 originated in India. These indigenous vegetables have immense potential in meeting the vegetable requirement of the country. They are rich in nutritional value especially in proteins, minerals and vitamins. Many of these vegetables have medicinal uses. Most of them are not used to their potential and their popularisation is needed in meeting the vegetable requirement of the country in coming days.

Ash gourd (Benincasa hispida Cong.)

Ash gourd also known as Wax gourd (Benincasa hispida Cong.) belonging to family Cucurbitaceae, is cultivated for its immature and mature fruits used as vegetable and in confectionery and ayurvedic medicines. A small fruited medicinal ash gourd is also grown in Kerala which is good for people suffering from nervousness. In areas where winter is mild, the crop can be grown throughout the year. The released varieties are KAU Local, Indu, Co.1, Co.2, APAU Shakthi, Karikumbala, Boodikumbala and IVAG -502. In addition, MAH-1 and MAH-2 are F1 hybrids released from private sector. The crop is raised by sowing seeds in pits at a spacing of 2.5 × 2.0 m in Tamil Nadu, 3.4 × 1.8-2.5 m in West Bengal and 4.5 × 2.0 m in Kerala. The seeds can also be sown in channels at a spacing of 2 × 0.5m. The crop is trailed on branches and twigs spread on the ground. The fruits are harvested at immature or fully ripe stage depending on demand. Immature fruits can be harvested 21 days after anthesis. Mature fruits for storage, long distance transport and seed extraction are harvested after full development of waxy coating on fruit surface. The average yield are 30-35 t/ha.

1. GERMPLASM

A germplasm is a collection of genetic resources for an organism. For plants, the germplasm may be stored as a seed collection or for trees, in a nursery.

1.1. Conservation methods

1.1.1. In situ conservation

The conservation of species in their natural habitats, is considered the most appropriate way of conserving biodiversity. Conserving the areas where populations of species exist naturally is an underlying condition for the conservation of biodiversity. That’s why protected areas form a central element of any national strategy to conserve biodiversity.

Plant absorbs large number of elements from the soil and other sources during their growth and development. But all these elements are not essential for plant growth. Seventeen mineral elements are known to be essential for the growth and development of all plants. A list of essential nutrients, their source and forms by which they are absorbed by plants are presented in Table 1.1.

Except carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O), all the other nutrients are obtained by plants largely from soils, fertilizers or manures. It has been seen that the number of nutrients obtained from soil is about 5 times the number of nutrients obtained from air and water. However, most of the plant tissue, in general, from 74 to 99.5% is made up of C, H and O i.e. nutrients obtained from air and water and only 0.5 to 26% of the plant tissue is synthesized from soil constituents. In ordinary (normal) conditions of agriculture, except drought, C, O and H are not limited for plant growth. It is the remaining 14 elements from soil that are usually limiting plant development and hence considerable emphasis is placed on the improvement of soil in respect of greater availability of these 14 nutrients. It may be borne in mind that all nutrients are essential for all crops even though their requirements differ from crop to crop and even among varieties of a given crop. Secondly, all nutrients are equally essential regardless of amounts required. For example, to produce one tonne of grain, wheat may absorb 25, 9, 33, 3.7, 5.3 and 4.7 kg of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulphur (S), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), respectively and 56, 624, 70, 24, 48 and 2 g of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), boron (B) and molybdenum (Mo), respectively. If the crop (any crop) does not get the smallest amounts of micronutrients needed, it cannot make the best use of abundant NPK.

According to Liebig’s Law of minimum which he enunciated in 1855, the growth of a plant is limited by that nutrient which is in shortest supply. This law in fact lays the ground rules for balanced crop nutrition.

The performance of plants is affected by the soil in which it grows and climate and micro climate of its surroundings.

Impact of soil

The soil provides anchorage, nutrients and water for plant growth. Soil fertility status, structure and texture influence the plant growth and productivity.

Classification of soil

On the basis of the organic and inorganic contents and particle size and texture, the soils have been classified. The inorganic matter in the soil constitutes of varying amount of sand, silt and clay, on the basis of which the soils are classified as follows.

Sandy soil

These soils have coarse textured and large pore spaces, have poor water holding capacity. Retention of nutrients in this soil is very poor. This type of soil is suitable for precocious crops. Sandy soils initiate rapid root growth, hence good as propagating medium. Since sandy soils has low in nutrient content, supplementation of adequate nutrition is imperative to achieve good plant growth.

GAP stands for “Good Agricultural Practices” which are used for production of safe agricultural produce which has zero microbial load on it and inside it. It is important for the producer to be acquainted with GAP.

Good Agricultural Practice of horticultural crops are intended to apply to the growing and processing of all produce as traded and used in the European Union. Hence, they apply to the production of all plant materials used in the food, feed and medicinal industries. They also apply to all methods of production including organic production in accordance with the European Union regulations.

The farmers involved in the cultivation of horticultural produce should ensure that the there is no damage to the existing wild life and the biodiversity in the farms which are maintained. It is advisable to regulate wild gathering by a specific guideline.

The main aim of GAP guidelines is to ensure that the produce meets the demand of the consumer and is of high quality standard.

It is therefore, important that they are produced hygienically, in order to reduce microbiological load to a minimum. They are produced with care, so that negative effect on plants in the course of cultivation, processing and storage is limited.

All participants in the production process are required to comply with these guidelines voluntarily and to develop practical measures to achieve it.

Farmers are showing their keen interest to grow this crop in all part of country due to market value. Strawberry has a unique place among all the berry fruits because of its charming red color and high nutritive value

New Seed Policy

Ministry of Agriculture, vide Letter No.11-71/88-SD-1 dated September 16,1988, has brought out ‘New Policy on Seed Development’, with the aim of providing to the farmers the best planting materials available in the world so as to increase productivity and thereby increasing farm income and export earnings. The Policy covers the import of seeds of coarse cereals/pulses/oil seeds; vegetable and flower seeds; bulbs/tubers of flowers; cuttings/ saplings/bud/wood etc., of flowers; and seeds & planting material of fruits. The following are the guidelines for the import of above categories of seed/planting material under the Seed Policy

Import of Seeds of Coarse Cereals/Pulses/Oil Seeds

The import of seeds of coarse cereals/pulses/oil seeds is permitted for a period not exceeding two years by companies that have technical/financial collaboration with companies abroad, provided that the latter agree to supply parental lines/nucleus or breeder seed technology to the Indian firm within two years of first shipment of commercial consignment. The bulk import is permitted by the importer based on the recommendation issued by the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation (DAC) after considering the trial/evaluation report of the varieties/hybrids, which he intends to import. PPA or any other officer notified for the said purpose issues the import permit based on the recommendation of DAC. However the recommendation of DAC is not required for import of trial material. The quantities of the seed permitted for import for initial trials by the importer, for ICAR multi-location trials & agronomic trials or combined trials (vide Letter No. 11-71/88/S.D.I dated 30^th January 1989 issued by the Ministry of Agriculture) as per Para 4.3.5 of Seed Policy shall be in accordance with Schedule-XII and also the quantities of seeds of parental lines required to be sampled and submitted in sealed condition for accession to gene bank of National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi (vide Letter No. 11-102/88-S.D.I dated 5^th February 1991) as per Para 4.3.8 of Seed Policy. The imported consignment shall be subjected to detailed testing for a period of 30-35 days and the same purpose the consignment will be held under detention in AAI warehouse or any customs bonded warehouse at the cost of importer.

Astro-meteorology is considered as one of the branches of Astronomy along with Astrophysics, Astrobiology and Astrometry. Astronomy is the science that deals with the material universe beyond the earth’s atmosphere. It studies the nature and constitution of Celestial (heavenly) bodies and the laws which govern them including the effect they produce upon one another. It seeks to unravel the probable past history of heavenly bodies and their development. There exists a confusion between the branches of Astronomy viz., Astrophysics and Astro-meteorology with the term Astrology. Astrophysics uses principles and laws of physics to explain how Celestial bodies form and function or in other words it will help to ascertain the nature of the astronomical objects, rather than their positions or motions in space. However, the Astrology and Astro-meteorology are the subjects deal in future prediction and often considered as pseudo-science which uses position and movement of stars and planets for that purpose. Astrology links these to predict the human behaviour, while that of Astro-meteorology links the same to predict the future weather.

From ancient days, these predictions are based on one’s wisdom and knowledge in astronomy and often these astrologers are astronomers who keenly watch the stars and planets movement and guide their rulers and farmers with their guesstimates. Till date it is being lore, mainly passed to followers of this group and the methodology is not documented clearly and properly. There are many incidences of falsified predictions of astrology as reported by many reviewers elsewhere and we are not discussing the same here, owing to our interest in weather prediction i.e., astro-meteorology only. However, we have to recognize the works of the ancient astrologers who helped in developing the astronomical science.

Basically, there are two approaches in astrology viz., geocentric and heliocentric as used by the practitioner of astrology worldwide. As the name implies the Geocentric astrology is based on the calculation of planetary position as seen by the observer from the earth and thus earth is centre, while Heliocentric astrology bases its interpretation upon position within solar system with reference to the sun as centre. Though in true sense, the sun is the centre, the effect of motion as manifest on the earth is the basis of most astrological interpretation. Hence, vast majority of astrologers employs the geocentric calculations of the planetary positions for their predictions.

Adaptation is any feature of an organism which has survival value under the existing condition of its habitat. The basic of successful crop production is the selection of an adapted plant species and varieties. Plants may have morphological adaptation or physiological adaptation or both for the existing environment.

Adaptation to soil moisture

Hydrophytes: More number of stomata on the upper surface of the leaf, aerenchyma tissue in the roots of rice plants, stem is hollow/straw, internodes are longer in floating and submerged rice,

Mesophytes: Stomata are normal. Present both on upper and lower leaf surface, medium root growth.

Freezing : Freezing is a process where temperature of food (fruits, vegetable etc.) is lowered down considerably below freezing point so that the water present inside the food undergoes change in state from liquid to solid (ice) and gets frozen immediately eg Frozen Pea. Water is immobilized and solutes are concentrated to reduce the water activity.

Principles of preservation : Combination of low temperature, low water activity, and pre-treatments like blanching, dipping in sugar syrup etc. stop (reduce) the growth and activity of microorganisms.

Theory of freezing : Freezing takes place in two main steps

Soil is the top layer of the earth surface in which plants can grow, consisting of rock and mineral particles mixed with decayed organic matter and having the capability of retaining water. Soil is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that together support life. Earth’s body of soil, called the pedosphere, has four important functions

The foods we eat contain nutrients. Nutrients are substances required by the body to perform its basic functions. Nutrients must be obtained from diet, since the human body does not synthesize them. Nutrients are used to produce energy, detect and respond to environmental surroundings, move, excrete wastes, respire (breathe), grow, and reproduce. There are six classes of nutrients required for the body to function and maintain overall health. These are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, water, vitamins, and minerals. Foods also contain non-nutrients that may be harmful (such as cholesterol, dyes, and preservatives) or beneficial (such as antioxidants). Nutrients that are needed in large amounts are called macro-nutrients. There are three classes of macro-nutrients: carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. These can be metabolically processed into cellular energy. Micro-nutrients are nutrients required by the body in lesser amounts, but are still essential for carrying out bodily functions. Micro-nutrients include all the essential minerals and vitamins. There are sixteen essential minerals and thirteen vitamins.

Processed fruit and vegetable are considered as staple food products throughout the world, and are becoming more popular with the increase of the global urban population. As a result, demand for processed fruit and vegetable products tends to increase with population growth in the world. There is strong demand for processed fruits and vegetables in the developing world over the past few years. In poor countries, people consume less fruits and vegetables due to the relatively high prices. All forms of preserved fruits and vegetables are available only to the urban elite people. But rural mosses producing more than 90 % of these fruits and vegetables are usually deprived of their uses.

Demand of Processed Fruits and Vegetables

Demand of processed fruits and vegetables is increasing in the developing as well as under developing countries of world. The following reasons are responsible for day by day increasing demand of processed fruits and vegetables.

After harvesting the quality of fruits and vegetables begins to diminish and products is edible for only a limited time then products begin to spoil or rot. Losses occur during harvesting and handling of fruits and vegetables can be minimized by proper techniques but processed food spoilage is bit difficult to control and stop after infection and contamination of microorganism.

Spoilage

Spoilage is deteriorative process which results reduction in quality of food (fruits and vegetables) which become inedible. The changes in food that cause it to lose its desired quality and eventually become inedible is called food spoilage or rotting. After harvesting, the quality of fruits and vegetables begins to diminish and product is edible for only a limited time. The deterioration and spoilage of fruits and vegetables may occur at different ways.

The losses in harvested products begin immediately after detachment of products from their parental plants. After some time, theses products begin to spoil or rot. Spoilage can be defined as the deteriorative process which renders the food inedible or results in reduction in quality. Spoilage of fresh fruits and vegetables usually occurs during storage, transportation and during processing. They also get contaminated with spoilage organisms either from each other or from the containers. Mechanical injuries during harvesting and transportation further aggravates the deterioration process.

Historical Account on Vegetable Cultivation in India

The vegetables have chequered history in India which dates back to prehistoric period before the arrival of Aryans in India (c. 1500-1000 BC). During the pre-historic times before the arrival of Aryans in India, the Proto-Australoids (Nisada) used brinjal, bottle gourd and watermelon as vegetables. Pea existed in India much before the Aryans came to the country and it was already present in Western Asia prior to its cultivation. The pea, most likely the field pea (Pisum sativum subsp. sativum var. arvense L.) was eaten during the Harappan civilization as evidenced from the archaeological excavations of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa (2500-1750 B.C.) in which carbonized pea seeds were discovered. Pea seeds were also found from Neolithic site (last stage of the Stone age) of Chirand in Bihar (situated 10 Km south-east of Chapra), Chacolithic site (period or Copper Age) of Maheshwar Nevdatoli (c. 1200 BC.) in Madhya Pradesh and part of Osmanabad district in Maharashtra. The presence of seeds of melon along with wheat was also recorded from the Harappan excavation. Plant remains of Chenopodium album, Portulaca oleracea and a few species of Solanaceae, Polygonaceae and Labiatae family during Mesolithic times (Middle Stone Age) were found at Mesolithic site of Damdama, Uttar Pradesh (c. 7000-6000 BC). Wood charcoals of plant remains of Lablab purpureus were found from the early phase of Indus-Saraswati (Sarasvati) or Indus Ghaggar-Hakra civilization (c. 3100-2800 BC). Kundru (Coccinia indica), cowpea and field pea were recorded from Hulas in Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, late Indus valley civilization archeological site. Carbonized seeds of hyacinth bean (dolichos bean), peas, Phaseolus, Vigna and melon from Rojdi in Gujarat and Chenopodium and amaranth from Surkotada, Gujarat (c. 2300-1800 BC), both being the archaeological sites belonging to the Indus valley civilization also suggested the existence of vegetables in India in the pre-historic times. Among the vegetables eaten during the pre-historic period, like brinjal, bottle gourd, watermelon, peas and melon as mentioned earlier, only brinjal has its origin in India while the other were brought from other countries much before the arrival of the Aryans. It is difficult to understand how a few important Indian native vegetables, like cucumber, Luffa (smooth and ridge gourd), pointed gourd and Dolichos bean (Lablab purpureus) were not known at that time. Similarly okra which has a secondary centre of origin in India has not been mentioned in any ancient literature. However, Abelmoschus moschatus called “Lata kasturika” in Sanskrit as a source of perfume has been recorded in Carak Samhita. The use of bottle gourd, which is not a native vegetable, is known from pre-historic times. Its dried fruit-shell is used as a hand jug (utensils) by saints and monks and in musical string instruments, like ektara, tamboora, tanpura, sitar and veena. Even mythological paintings have always delineated Naradmuni with tamboora in his hand and the goddess Saraswati with Veena which suggest the antiquity of bottle gourd in India. However, its date of introduction and the place from where it came remain unrecorded. It is also not mentioned in any iconography of the Medieval period (9^th and 10^th Century AD).

INTRODUCTION

Knowledge Resource Centres play a very important role in this fast changing e-environment of publishing. Their role includes identification and selection of information, its organization and management, storage, retrieval and dissemination to right users at the right time at right place at right price and in right format. The dawn of information revolution is considered to be one of the marvels of 21st century. It is well known that paper and printing were originated in China in the 2^nd and 5^th century of Christian era, respectively.(1) There is a “ wordless heaven book”, “ published in oral or paper less form among the Chinese. The word less book is actually an adaptation and extension of “the song of baked dough by Pie-wen Lu” (2) of the 14^th century. The “elite” in every generation have access to the timelessly flexibly text of the heaven-book to interpret the contents and to predict, accordingly, the great events of the world, particularly when it is in chaos. The world refers to, of course, the “middle kingdom,” which is China in Chinese. Although the work is only a legend, the wordless heaven-book can be considered as the pioneer prototype of modern electronic publishing and as the earliest idea of the recently developed hypertext.

Another classic concept of e-publishing can be traced in Gullivers Travels by Jonathan Swift first published in 1726. The work has a passage describing a writing machine developed by the Lagadonians in the Grand Academy of Lagado. The Lagadonian writing machine used the method of a fixed syntactic structure and the filling in of that structure with contents by a random procedure (3).

USER EDUCATION

User Education can be defined as a program to guide and to instruct the potential users either individually or collectively. User education is an action taken by the Library staff to train / educate their users so as to make full use of the existing knowledge to develop their community.

ALA Glossary defines user education as it encompasses all types of activities designed to teach users about library services, facilities and organizations library resources and search strategy.

User education can be defined in the context of electronic sources of Information as educating the users how to operate computer and searching Information on Net using various search strategies and to educate them how to use electronic sources of information and various databases.

Users of the library must be convinced that continuing learning is worthwhile and that the process of education does not end with examination. They must have confidence to be learners and to stand of their own, to possess autonomy to select and to direct their own future study experience. User education has been defined by Mews as “instruction given to readers to help them to make best use of library”. User education was not solely to stimulate library use as this but one of the sources of Information. According to Nancy, Fjalbarnt and Lan Malley “ User Education is concerned with the whole Information and communication process and one part if this involves the total interaction of the users the library. This should be a continuous process starting with schools and public libraries and with possibility of extension to academic and specialized libraries. According to Jacques Tacathan, Director of UNESCO general Information Program “User Education is to include any effort or program which will guide and instruct existing and potential user in the recognition and information service and their assessment.

INTRODUCTION

Information services are keys to the development of agriculture education, research and extension education in India. The services are rendered by the agricultural department, university, college and ICAR institute libraries. In changing scenario the users of libraries access the information themselves from various sources such as computer, internet, television, e-governance, videoconferencing, call centers, mobile phones and other electronic sources from anywhere, at any time as and when required.

Agricultural trends are changing everyday with the development of new research techniques and technologies and in support of this a heterogeneous knowledge is available in the form of various electronic sources. To make the best of emerging technologies in agriculture, it is vital that agricultural students, scientists, research scholars, academicians, extension workers, agriculturalists receive continuous information on education, research, extension work, training and to the cultivators on topics such as pesticide management, use of better seeds, irrigation and use etc. for the development of farm and farming. With the introduction of new technology that affects both their processes and products, libraries become more and more hybrid organizations. Hybrid libraries are mixes of traditional print material like books and magazines, as well as electronic based material such as downloadable audio books, electronic journals, e-books, etc. Because of this shift, libraries face many challenges, the most important of which is the competition for scarce resources. In this competition libraries have to change the allocation of resources from the more traditional processes like circulation to more value added processes like direct self-services to their patrons. The FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, providing behind the scenes assistance to help people help themselves.

INTRODUCTION

Library networks and cooperatives were formed to provide support among libraries, leveraging staff and resources to provide cost-effective and efficient services that the libraries individually could not afford. By 1960s, the networks and cooperatives were focusing on automation; it was through them that library automation was introduced and pioneering efforts in resource sharing began. As the world of libraries changed, other services became the business of networks and cooperatives. Frequently, services initiated by networks were later integrated into the daily operations of individual libraries. Examples of such pioneering services included Internet connectivity and training; teleconferencing; services to special populations; distance learning; database licensing and training. Hence the discipline of LIS meant to manage and provide information service may not be taught effectively and practiced perfectly through a framed curriculum in the formal education stream alone. Driven by the market demands and user needs, the discipline is embracing other disciplines like computers, communication technology research etc. Library consortia and networking are not new to the library community as it is the latest phrase of the so-called library cooperation, library networks and so on. We have talked a lot about the issues that caused the lack of successful implementation of library networks in India. Of them, technology and economics are very important factors for realizing a successful cooperation. We talked about the solutions that are of global in nature but never suited Indian environments with its economic background. The result is that we developed library networks, but nothing to share. And then we realized that we need to develop information resources in the electronic form so that library networks become effective for the purposes they were setup. We have had number of conferences, meetings, publications etc on discussing the bibliographic formats, standards and the software to host these resources. There was a lot of initiatives by networks such as INFLIBNET, DELNET and other library networks supported by NISSAT to formulate bibliographic standards and formats that is suitable for Indian environment. And the database development activities started. Union catalogs of serials, thesis and dissertations were developed followed by catalog of books. Web enabled search interfaces were also developed for searching. However, union catalog system will be effective only when they are supported by efficient and timely document delivery system.

INTRODUCTION

In the current climate of rapid change, whether political, economical, social or technological, the importance of knowledge cannot be ignored. Knowledge plays a crucial role in the development of the society which is based on the development of the individual person of that society. Once society is developed automatically the nation will develop. Developed countries have already realized the importance of knowledge and accordingly collected and organized properly. The developing countries like India are now realizing its importance. It has been felt that without knowledge society and then nation cannot be developed.

On this backdrop someone has to come forward and act as a broker between those who have knowledge and those who may use it. No doubt, knowledge cannot be well managed until some organization or professional takes the clear responsibility of it. Library professionals are the right persons to shoulder this responsibility.

Knowledge is action. It is a value-added behavior and activity. It provides the ability to respond to a novel situation. The person having knowledge can take right decision at right time in any critical situation. Such decisions will definitely get fruitful results. Therefore it should not be neglected. It must be focused and shared.

2.1 Clean Cultivation

This type of cultivation is extensively followed in India. It involves regular ploughing of the land followed by removal of weeds. Tilling the orchard soil regularly provides a weed free environment in the orchard. Traditional tillage with the spade or hoe involves shallow cultivation and partial burying of weeds. Use of animals for ploughing reduces the labour cost but some superficial tree roots get damaged in ploughing. Tractor drawn tool can be used during initial years when the orchard trees are not fully grown. Branches hanging low, spreading in the inter-row spaces hinders the movements of the tractor even in widely spaced rows at maturity in most of the orchards. Under such situations small power tillers can be used. Tillage controls weeds partly through burying weeds and partly through exposing underground parts of weeds to desiccation. The land around the trunk must be cleaned separately with the help of spade as it is difficult to operate a power implement in the vicinity of the trunk. This is very instrumental in saving soil moisture. It has immense effects on the soil properties. Cleaning removes the protecting layer of vegetation and exposes the soil surface to weathering, and thus reduces the frequency of additions of organic matter to soil. Cultivation physically disturbs soil, mixing upper and lower layers. In this management system, the interspace between the trees is kept clean by tillage by removal of weeds. Clean cultivation by tillage influences the soil aggregate size and stability, porosity and pore size distribution, and the development of sub-surface layers of high bulk density (hard pans). The first change that occurs with tillage is the disruption of established soil pore continuity (Chan and Mead 1989). Organic carbon and nitrogen decline to a new equilibrium value depending on tillage intensity, cropping system and climate.

Introduction

During transition period and lactation, the high-producing dairy cows undergo a period of extensive tissue catabolism because of negative nutrient balance. Homeorrhetic mechanism at this stage ensures that nutrients are partitioned to favour the growth of fetus prepartum and meet the demand of nutrients in early lactation. Simultaneously the homeostasis secures survival of the animal body functions. However, a decline in feed intake in transition period leads to metabolic disturbances and low milk production in early lactation. The postpartum negative nutrient balance impairs immune and reproductive functions in dairy cows and buffaloes. The increased demand for nutrients and decreased dry matter intake results in low circulating glucose and insulin levels and elevated non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and ketone bodies postpartum. The energetic status of a cow or buffalo modulates the secretion of hormones that play key roles in growth of ovarian follicles, ovulation, corpus luteum (CL) formation, and oocyte competence. The NEBAL not only limits milk production potential but also has a detrimental effect on immune cells. Negative nutrient balance is associated with changes in the pattern of ovarian follicle growth and oocyte quality and alteration in endocrines. In addition, cows under negative nutrient balance have extended periods of anovulation. These changes could be minimized by supplementing energy rich supplements like prilled fat or any bypass fat preparations.

Introduction

Water resource is imperative for the survival of all life-forms on planet earth and defines the limits of sustainable development, without any substitute. Only 2.5% of all water on the earth is freshwater, and of that, around 0.5% is accessible through ground or surface water supplies. The increasing world population, industrialization and climate change is putting additional pressure on water resources. This is also true for livestock sector. As per prediction equations, the requirement of water for livestock will rise from 2.3 billion m³ in 2000 to 2.8 billion m³in 2025 and 3.2 billion m³ in 2050 (Hedge, 2012).

The balance between humanity's demands and the quantity available is already precarious (Karin et al, 2002). Additionally, climate change poses a serious threat to water resources as the climate system and the hydrological cycles are intimately linked, and any variability in climate affects the hydrological cycle. The World Bank report on the water and climate change inter-linkages also reiterated that climate change could profoundly alter future patterns of both water availability and use, thereby increasing levels of water stress and insecurity, both at the global scale and in sectors that depend on water (Alavian et al., 2009).

Animal body contains several fluids other than blood and lymph which have specialized functions for specific organs. Two of these fluids are cerebrospinal fluid and synovial fluid. The cerebrospinal fluids protects and supports brain and spinal cord function. Synovial fluid protects the functioning of the movement of the body by bone-muscular joints.

Management skills are also known as leadership skills and involve planning, decision making, delegation, time management and time management to ensure optimum organization in focus and the technical of how and why of accomplishing tasks. Managers who are expected to carry out performance appraisal should have some appropriate training. This should include the reasons the organization carries out appraisals, and the skills of performance appraisal. Managers need to appreciate how the process fits into the wider strategic process of performance management, and how the data collected contributes to an analysis of the organization’s human resources, and its capability to contribute to business strategy and value.
