History of human civilization initiated with the struggle against hunger, it flourishes with the fight against poverty and turns oblivious with absence of voices being raised against these two bio-social lethal. If hunger is a pain, poverty is an agony, then, keeping silent against this carcinoma of civilization is no doubt a crime. Is it that poor people are put to an insurmountable silence by the ruthless hegemonies of political economy, or, they are silent, that’s why they remain poor? Silence has been the lethal enzyme in transforming poverty into hunger, and, offers to a socio- chemical bond, poverty-hunger-silence; the bond that remains non-breakable as on date. Economists lament for poverty, nutritionists regret hunger, but the issues of silence and its cohesion to both hunger and poverty has seldom been scholastically delved into or dealt with. We can hope, a desperation of wishful thinking as it may be, shall drench the researchers who think and feel to explore a missing link between hunger and poverty, the silence or the social anemia of voices.

Spinach is estimated to have originated in ancient Persia some 2,000 years ago, and was transported to India and ancient China as the “Persian vegetable” via Nepal in 647 AD. The Saracens introduced spinach to Sicily around 827. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea), also known as vilayati palak in Hindi, is a leafy vegetable that grows well in cool or temperate climates. Vilayati spinach is dioecious, unlike beet leaf spinach, which is hermaphrodite. Its production is restricted to household gardens in mountainous regions of India, and it is consumed as a cooked vegetable.

“Every year, 26,688,150 tonnes of spinach are produced over the world.” With a production output of24,484,507 tonnes per year, China is the world’s greatest spinach grower. The United States of America is in second place, producing 323,620 tonnes each year. “Spinach isn’t grown in India.”

2.1 Introduction

Life exists in almost all diverse habitats, ranging from high mountain peaks of more than 20,000 feet to deep sea bottoms of up to 10,000m. Living organisms can be found in ponds, pools, ditches, sulphur springs, hot springs, the cold of the Polar Regions, the scorching heat of deserts, dense tropical forests, and anywhere else life is possible.

However, not all organisms occupy all possible life-supporting areas.

7.1 Introduction

Placoderms (plate-skinned fishes) (Fig. 7.1) flourished and evolved in divergent lines during the Devonian period and became extinct by the end of the Permian period. They were bottom-dwelling, mud-sucking Palaeozoic fishes that may have been nectonic. Their bodies were divided into three parts: the head, the trunk and the tail. They ranged in size from 10 cm to 9 meters. The head and trunk are surely covered by bony plates.

9.1 Introduction

Holocephalians are a group of highly specialised cartilaginous fishes that live in the sea. It is structurally similar to Elasmobranchii and Teleostomi. It exists in both extinct and living forms. Previously considered a class of Pisces, Nelson (1984) classified Holocephali as a sub-class.

Many courtship activities ensure that people only mate with people of their species. The distinction between species’ courtship behaviour allows females to identify males of their species. It is concerned with reproductive fitness and provides opportunities for survival

37.1 Introduction

Temperature describes the kinetic energy of the gases that make up air. As gas molecules move more quickly, air temperature increases. Among several environmental changes, increased air temperature affects the water cycle by increasing water temperature, which causes changes in local weather, water quality and river bodies (Gossiaux et al., 2019). This is because the water temperature is one of the most important factors for physicochemical properties of water quality (Szumiriska et al., 2020), aquatic habitats (Duggals et al., 2018), spawning rates (Besson et al., 2016) and fish growth (Collas et al., 2019) (Fig. 37.1).

Fungicides have been used to manage plant diseases since ancient times. The use of sulphur as a purifying agent is documented in the Old Testament, Homeric poems published about the eighth century B.C., Vedic literature (1500-500 B.C.), Buddhist literature, Surpala’s Vrksayurveda (800 A.D.), and other texts. Chemicals’ importance as fungicides was recognised only when fungus were clearly identified as a cause of plant diseases.

Over the previous two centuries, a wealth of information on fungicides has collected, owing primarily to advances in fungicidal chemical expertise. Aside from chemical control, other alternative approaches of disease control have earned appropriate respect throughout this period. However, in today’s modern agricultural system, fungicides play an important role in disease management and are useful in increasing crop output by reducing the attack of hazardous plant pathogens.

The effects of weeds, pests, and diseases result in the loss of between 20 40% of the world’s potential agricultural yield each year. By reducing crop loss from pest infestations, the use of pesticides can boost agricultural output by 25–50%. Only 25 to 30 percent of the area that is now being grown is protected by pesticides. Because domestic pesticide use is among the lowest in the world, there is significant room for expansion. India uses 0.6 kilogramme of pesticides per hectare compared to the global average of 3 kg per hectare. The use of crop protection products must be enhanced. There are now 1175 compounds accessible in the world, however only roughly 292 of them are registered in India.

Botanicals

Botanicals play a significant role in the development of a disease management approach that is both ecologically sound and acceptable to the environment. Plant products have been found to have fungicidal, bactericidal, and antiviral properties. It is known that 346 plant species have fungicidal, 92 have bactericidal, and 90 have antiviral properties. This proves conclusively that the plant kingdom is home to a sizable stockpile of chemicals that can control a range of plant diseases. Because many of them employ many modes of action and plant compounds are safer for species other than the targeted, there is also less chance of resistance developing.Plants and plant products known as botanicals are safer for protecting plants against pathogens.

Pesticides are any chemical or mixture intended for use as a plant regulator, defoliant, or desiccant as well as any substance or mixture meant for preventing, getting rid of, repelling, or controlling pests. Agricultural pests include insects, weeds, fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, rodents, and mollusks. The term pesticide, which refers to these pests and cide, which meaning “to kill.” Insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, weed killers, molluscicides, rodenticides, nematicides, and other types of pesticides can be classed as pesticides. Every manufacturer of pesticides as well as companies with CIB & RC registration must provide all scientific data on bio-ecacy, toxicity, residues, and safe waiting periods that has been obtained via laboratory research.

Chemotherapy is the procedure of treating a sick or infected plant using chemicals to kill the fungus. Chemotherapy has proven successful in very few circumstances. For example, plants have been treated with antibiotics to minimise the severity of “lethal yellowing” of palm trees caused by Phytoplasma and the decline of pears. Likewise, fungicides have been used to elm trees to mitigate the effects of Ophiostoma ulmi and O? neo-ulmi, the causative agents of Dutch elm disease. The chemotherapy drugs must, however, always be given repeatedly. Systemic fungicides like sterol biosynthesis inhibitors (SBIS), which partially penetrate plant tissues, eradicate recent infestations.

Chemotherapeutic fungicides are a class of systemic fungicides that have some plant mobility. They are capable of eliminating diseases even in parts of the plant that were not exposed to the chemicals. Unfortunately, pathogens develop resistance to systemic fungicides because they are site-specific

Combining two or more pesticides in a tank saves time and labour while also lowering equipment and application costs. However, the effectiveness of one or more products may change in some circumstances. Two or more pesticides are compatible if they may be mixed and sprayed together without changing the efficacy, physical and chemical qualities of the mixture, or harming unwanted application locations. Chemicals are considered incompatible when issues arise when more than one product are mixed..

Incompatibility

Incompatibility occurs when a pesticide is unable to be adequately blended to generate a homogenous solution or suspension. Flakes, crystals, or greasy masses, as well as significant separation, are not acceptable. Incompatible mixes like this can clog application equipment and hinder the even distribution of the active ingredient in the spray tank. This inhibits pesticides from being applied properly.

Agrochemical Sector is Transforming

Over two lakh crores of India’s agricultural production—roughly 20% of overall production—are lost to pests and diseases. In order to safeguard farmers’ crops in this situation, agrochemicals might be quite important. Even though India uses very little agrochemicals domestically (less than 0.5 kg/ha), it is the world’s fourth-largest producer of agrochemicals.

n the post-COVID era, there is ample opportunity for agrochemicals to emerge as one of the key export sectors capitalising on changes in global supply chains. The government has already identified the agrochemicals industry as one of the 12 Champion sectors to watch, and by 2026, the agrochemicals market is projected to grow to a valuation of around $7.4 billion.

Nano technology: It is the art of manipulating materials on an atomic or molecular scale to build microscopic devices. The word “nano’ meaning ‘dwarf” in Greek language refers to dimension / magnitude of the material / particle in the order of 109. Nanotechnology is nothing but manipulating of particles into very small particles called nano-particles. These particles have dimensions in the scale of nano-meter and used to design / build materials and devices. Nanotechnology has been provisionally defined as relating to materials, systems and processes which operate at a scale of 100 nanometers (nm) or less. Nanotechnology is an anticipated manufacturing technology that allows through and inexpensive control of the structure of matter by working with atom. It will allow many things to be manufactured at low cost and with no pollution. The concept of nanotechnology was first given by Nobel Laureate physicist Richard P. Feynman in Southern California in 1959. Nanotechnology is sometimes termed as Molecular Manufacturing based nanotechnology “MNT”.

Mercury, a heavy metal, is present vi. Various forms and is well known for its toxic effects especially on human health. Mercury occurs naturally vin the environment through volcanic eruptions, weathering of rocks and forest fires. It can be observed in soil, water and the atmosphere. Human activities such as mining, industrial processes (eg. Coal Combustion, chor alkali production) and improper disposal of mercury containing products contribute to environmental contamination. Mercury can be absorbed through inhalation ingestion or skin contact. Once absorbed, mercury distributes throughout the body, crossing g the blood brain barrier and placenta. Inorganic mercury is partly metabolized to organic forms, such as methyl mercury, by micro organisms in environment. Mercury is excreted via Urine and feces. Mercury disrupts neuronal function by interfering with neurotransmitter signalling pathways, cognitive function, motor coordination and sensory perception Mercury accumulates in the kidneys, causing tubular necrosis. Proteinuria and renal failure. Clinical signs and symptoms are tremors memory loss, nausea, vomiting, hypertension and chest pain. Diagnosis is based on medical history, physical examination, blood, Urine, hair tests and neuro imaging techniques namely MRI or CT scans. Treatment is based on chelation therapy. Finally it is concluded that understanding the sources, toxico kinetics, toxico dynamics clinical manifestations and treatment options is critical for effective management and prevention of mercury toxicity.

Introduction

“Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” -the theme of the International Women’s Day 2024 celebrated by the United Nations and multiple organizations across the world highlighted the need of review of different works and efforts in bringing gender equality in various development departmentsincluding agriculture and allied sectors. This reflects the importance being given to the efforts towards gender equality at the highest level.

Agrifood systems are a major employer of women globally and constitute a more important source of livelihood for women than for men in many countries. Empowering women and closing gender gaps in agrifood systems thus, enhances the well-being of women and their households, reducing hunger, boosting incomes and strengthening resilience.Increasing women’s empowerment is essential for women’s well-being and has a positive impact on agricultural production, food security, diets and child nutrition. Also,the gender-transformative approaches to change restrictive social norms are cost effective and have high returns, but morework is needed on developing pathways to implement gender-transformative approaches.

With the recent advances in cognitive science and applied ethology, it become imperative to assess the effect of various negative stimuli on the animal welfare and meat quality in goats during slaughter. The present study was designed to assess the effect of exposure of goats to slaughter ambient such as the smell of blood, vocalization, noise, movement of equipment, and unfamiliar workers could initiate stress responses, thereby affecting animal welfare and meat quality. Boer cross bucks (age 8-12 months of age, 25-30 kg live weight, n=18) were halal slaughtered into three groups viz., Control (slaughtered alone), E (exposed to act of slaughter), and S (slaughtered in front of E). The vocalization and avoidance behavior were present in 50% of goats upon exposure to slaughter ambient. The time to death and bleed out percentage did not differ significantly among treatments. The exposure of the goats to the slaughter resulted in a significant (p<0.05) increase in the nor-adrenaline, and β-endorphin. Based on the present study, it can be concluded that exposure to slaughter ambient had an effect on behavioral responses, carcass, and blood biochemical factors. Thus, the present study highlighted the issue of emotional stress and slaughter empathy in goats. These findings could help in harmonizing all practices of slaughter and improving animal welfare while fulfilling religious and customary demands.

Disease
Disease is one of those terms that are very difficult to define. It is realized that disease (literally dis-ease) implies lack of ‘comfort’and therefore, involves deviation from normal functioning. From time to time several definitions which have been proposed, in fact descriptive but not simultaneously exclusive. The definitions for the term disease are:
• Disease is a malfunctioning process that is caused by continuous irritation, which results in some suffering producing symptoms.
• Disease is an alteration in one or more of the ordered sequential series of physiological processes culminating in a loss of coordination of energy utilization in a plant as a result of the continuous irritation from    the presence or absence of some factor or agent.
• Disease is any morphological or physiological abnormality in a plant or any of its parts caused by continuous irritation and results in economic losses to human beings.
• Any deviation from normal growth or structure of plants that is sufficiently pronounced and permanent to produce visible symptoms or to impair quality and economic value.
• A plant is said to be diseased when there is a harmful deviation from normal functioning of physiological process .

Parasitism
The term parasitism refers to a parasite’s taking of food from its host. Without chlorophyll, fungi are unable to synthesis their own sources of food. Fungi are classified into three main biological groups according on the basis of mode of the nutrient uptake . Parasites, Saprophytes and Symbionts, The term saprophytes, or saprobes, refers to those fungi that feed on dead and decaying organic matter (Gr. sapros rotten + bios life). Some of them have evolved farther, but they are still unable to grow on other living things and can only exist as saprobes. We refer to them as obligate saprophytes(L. Obligare = to bind sapros) . On the other hand, some species live as saprophytes, but under certain circumstances, they can infect another living entity. We refer to them as facultative parasites (Greek parasitos + Latin facultas ability). Many fungus infect living hosts and deprive them of their food. They are called parasites (Greek: parasitos, which means to eat beside). Additionally, a few of them developed into facultative soprophytes (L. facultatas ability + Gr. sapros) after diverging as obligatory parasites (L. Obligar? to bind + Gr. parasitos table mate). Obligate parasites can only grow in culture on living media; in the wild, they can only feed on living protoplasm. On the other hand, facultative saprophytes are basically parasitic organisms but also capable of growing on dead organic matter under some conditions.

Introduction
The goal of plant disease management is to reduce the economic and aesthetic damage caused by plant diseases. Conventionally, this has been called plant disease control, but current social and environmental values believe “control” as being absolute and the term too rigid. More multifaceted approaches to disease management, and integrated disease management, have resulted from
this shift in attitude, however. Single often severe measures such as pesticide applications, soil fumigation or burning are no longer in common use. Further, disease management measures are often determined by disease forecasting or disease modeling rather than on either a calendar or prescription basis. Disease management might be viewed as proactive whereas disease control is reactive,
although it is often difficult to distinguish between the two concepts, especially in the application of specific measures.
Plant disease management practices rely on anticipating occurrence of disease and attacking vulnerable points in the disease cycle (i.e., weak links in the infection chain). Therefore, correct diagnosis of a disease is necessary to identify the pathogen, which is the real target of any disease management program. A thorough understanding of the disease cycle, including climatic and other environmental factors that influence the cycle, and cultural requirements of the host plant, are essential to effective management of any disease.

Natural farming is gaining prominence in India as a sustainable and environmentally friendly method for cultivating cereals and pulses. This approach eliminates the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, instead depending on ageold practices, natural biological processes, and locally sourced organic materials. Crops like rice, wheat, millets, pigeon pea, chickpea, green gram, and black gram are key staples in the Indian diet, and natural farming offers a promising route to enhance both environmental health and farmer well-being.
At the core of natural farming is the focus on soil health, maintained through techniques such as mulching, crop rotation, and the use of traditional inputs like jeevamrit, beejamrit, and ghanjeevamrit. These mixtures—prepared using cow dung, urine, jaggery, pulse flour, and local soil—boost microbial activity, improving nutrient absorption and resistance to disease. Cereals benefit from proper soil moisture through waaphasa (aerated soil) and mulching, while pulses, which naturally fix nitrogen, thrive without synthetic additives.
Weeds are controlled manually or with natural solutions like agniastra, and pests are managed using plant-based formulations and cow urine sprays. Intercropping cereals with pulses enhances soil fertility, deters pests, and optimizes land usage. Farmers in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have reported better soil health, lower input costs, and increased climate resilience through natural farming. As consumer interest in pesticide-free grains and pulses rises, farmers are also experiencing better market prices. With growing institutional support and public awareness, natural farming is emerging as a strong alternative for promoting food security, environmental sustainability, and rural development in India.

Natural farming in India adopts a preventive and ecosystem-based approach to pest and disease management, prioritizing ecological harmony over chemical control. Rather than eradicating pests, the aim is to regulate their populations through natural mechanisms and enhance the farm’s biological resilience.
Natural farmers commonly use plant-based formulations such as Agniastra, Brahmastra, and Neemastra. These are prepared from locally available herbs, cow urine, and cow dung, and serve as effective insecticidal and antifungal sprays. Neem (Azadirachta indica) plays a central role due to its wide-ranging pestrepelling properties and is a staple in fermented bio-sprays. Practices like crop
rotation, intercropping, and companion planting help disrupt pest life cycles and minimize disease occurrence. Crops like marigold deter nematodes and aphids, while plants like basil and turmeric suppress fungal infections. These practices also promote the presence of beneficial insects and pollinators, contributing to natural pest control.
A key strategy in natural farming is enhancing soil health through inputs like Jeevamrit, compost, and fermented plant extracts. These boost microbial activity, which in turn suppresses soil-borne pathogens and strengthens plant
immunity. Waaphasa—ensuring proper soil aeration—helps prevent root diseases by maintaining an optimal air-moisture balance in the rhizosphere.
Regular field inspection and sanitation help in early detection of pest issues. Timely weeding and residue management further reduce disease spread. Immediate application of natural deterrents can prevent outbreaks from escalating.

Natural farming in India is increasingly being recognized not just for its ecological integrity but also for its potential to enhance farmer incomes through systematic certification, innovative marketing, and value-added processing. Together, these elements form a vital support framework for scaling natural farming as a sustainable livelihood model.
While natural farming is rooted in chemical-free traditional practices, certification mechanisms like the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) and thirdparty organic certifications provide formal recognition. These certifications— backed by government agencies and NGOs—enhance credibility, assure consumers of product authenticity, and allow farmers to label their produce as
natural or organic. This certification enables access to niche, premium markets where consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable and safe food options.
Marketing remains a key challenge but also a promising frontier. Traditional supply chains often fail to acknowledge the ecological value of natural produce. Direct-to-consumer sales, farmers’ markets, and online platforms like Jaivik Kheti are bridging this gap, offering better price realization. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) further strengthen the position of natural farmers by enabling bulk marketing, logistics management, and improved price negotiation.
Value addition transforms raw produce into market-ready goods such as  pickles, flours, oils, and herbal teas, significantly enhancing profitability.
