Abstract

Three seepage tests were carried out for an earth canal at Rawakeeb Research Station (RRS)-west of Omdurman and an average seepage rate of 3.4 m/day was obtained. This value suggests that irrigation canal at RRS should be lined. In addition to that preliminary economic evaluation showed that canal lining is imperative in RRS. A concrete slab form was well designed for lining of RRS canal. Precasting technique and construction technique provided the required water tightness. Economic evaluation was done for RRS canal to investigate the extent of occurrence of supposed advantages, and to estimate costs and benefits and rate of return to lining. The capital expenditure (C), net present worth (NPW) and benefit/cost ratio were found to be 2600.4, 1961.9 and 1.3 respectively which offers a good indicator to adopt the technique.

4.1 INTRODUCTION

India enjoys a wide range of climates and agro-meteorological zones which are suitable for growing various kinds of horticultural crops like fruits, vegetables, f lowers, spices and condiments, plantation crops, and medicinal and aromatic plants.

India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices in the world. India stands second both in production of fruits and vegetables next to China. China contributes 21.2% in the world fruit production whereas India produces 12.6%. When we think of vegetables, China produces 49.5% and India produces 14.09%. India is the largest producer of Mango, Banana, Papaya, Coconut, Arecanut, and Cashewnut in the world. In the country, Andhra Pradesh (13.0%) is the leading state in fruit production followed by Maharashtra (11.2%). In case of vegetables, Uttar Pradesh stands first occupying 15.1% share followed by West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh in the range of 14.6% and 10% respectively. In cut flower production West Bengal ranks first.

Total horticultural production for the year 2017–18 was 311.71 million tonnes from cropping area of 25.43 million hectares of land and an estimated production for the crop year 2018-19 is 314.87 million tonnes from an area of 25.6 million hectares.

8.1 Economic Geology and Ore Mineralogy

8.1.1 Economic geology

Economic Geology deals with the comprehensive study of mineral deposits including their processes of formation and uses. By applying the principles of geology, a mining engineer is able to exploit such deposits profitably for the use of Man.

8.1.2 Ore mineral

An ore is a term applied usually to that part of a metalliferous mineral deposit that can be utilized profitably as a source of one-or-more metals, this term now is widely used for the usable part of many non-metallic (non-metalliferous mineral) deposits, like barite, fluorite, sulphur, etc.

8.1.3 Gangue mineral

An ore is usually a mixture of one or more usable minerals (ore minerals) and one or more unusable minerals (gangue minerals). The usual gangue minerals are quartz and other forms of silica, calcite, dolomite, siderite, barite, feldspars, garnet, chlorite, kaolin, fluorite, apatite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, and sometimes the gangue material is the country rock or host rock itself in which the ore minerals occur. Sometimes, the gangue minerals may also be utilized as by-products of the ore deposit. The nature and proportion of the gangue influence the economic value of an ore to a great extent.

Introduction

Any project is undertaken and an investment is made with expectation of realizing benefits out of it. This applies to projects both in the private domain as also in the public domain. Hence, it is imperative to assess the benefits derived from the project investment over its entire economically viable. The extent to which project contribute to various aims of development (benefits) and make use of scarce resource (costs) can differ widely. A proper project preparation requires an assessment of the various benefits and costs associated with execution of a project. Methods to determine, analyze and assess the relevant benefits and costs of a project are known as cost-benefit analysis. The cost- benefit analysis ensures that all the relevant factors that contribute to a project’s net benefits are systematically taken into account, whether they relate to an individual, a firm, a social group, the public sector or the country as a whole.

There are many tools or criteria for the financial evaluation of projects. However, the important and commonly used evaluation criteria are simple Rate of Return, Payback Period, Net Present Worth, Benefit- Cost Ratio and Internal Rate of Return.

Economic appraisal and evaluation helps the decision makers who are saddled with the responsibility to prioritize measures in a situation with enormous needs and quite limited resources. Government planners as well as donor agencies are all in need of enough data in order to make rational choice or decision in selection of investment alternatives. Most of the economists believe that economic analysis cannot give the final answers. There will always be lack of data, uncertainty about the future, disagreement on the methods, and similar issues. However, economic analysis, if properly done, can indeed be of much help to decision makers.

9.1 ECONOMIC LOSSES DUE TO ANIMAL DISEASES

Economic considerations are increasingly forcing their way forward in the decision-making processes of animal health management. With the continuing intensification of livestock production systems, the economic implications of livestock diseases have become increasingly important at both farm and national levels, as they represent avoidable waste of scarce resources (McInerney, 1988). From an economic point of view, an animal disease either destroys the basic resources, reduces the attainable output, dwindles the efficiency with which the resources are converted into products, or decreases the economic value of products (McInerney, 1995).

The effects of a disease present in an animal or herd may be manifested by stunted growth, lowered production, delayed maturity, delayed conception, mortality, reduced resource (especially feed) use efficiency, etc. These negative impacts of a disease demand more resource(s) than usual, resulting in higher expenditures for the same output and reduced farm income. Apart from these negative effects at the farm or herd level, animal diseases lead to economic losses at the regional, national, and global levels too by increasing animal mortality, reducing productivity, increasing disease control costs, swelling losses in animal trade, decreasing the market values of livestock and their products, and ultimately ending at food insecurity. These economic impacts of livestock diseases, besides their social impacts, have now been recognized globally, in both developed and developing countries, necessitating quantification of the economic impact of animal diseases as an urgent and important step to support the prevention and control decisions for improved animal health to ensure better rural and global economy.

Fishes are used by human beings in different forms from time immemorial millions of human beings suffer due to hunger and malnutrition and fishes from a rich source of food, which has following importance:

1) Fish is an excellent food for mankind is more easily perishable than cattle, sheep and chicken.

2) Fish flesh is easily digestible by child and man.

3) Fish flesh has very great nutritive and medicinal values.

4) Fish flesh contains proteins, bass, vitamins, waters and minerals.

5) All the essential required amino acids are present in the fish flesh.

6) Fish flesh contains proteins about 13-20 % and it is easily digestible and nutritional.

7) Fish flesh is highly perishable commodity constituted as 60-80 % water.

8) Fish flesh contains about 1-8 % fats or oils and it is more important value of fishes.

Fish are one of the most important groups of vertebrates and have always been a significant species in man’s life, influencing it in a variety of ways. Fish are highly valued in human civilization for their food, cooking, and nutritional value. They have significant economic, nutritional, medicinal, industrial, aesthetic and religious values, and they employ millions of people worldwide. Several species are sought after as luxury foods in high-end restaurants. They help to ensure food security in many parts of the world by serving as a valuable supplement to varied and nutritious diets.

1. Introduction

Horticultural crops have emerged as a cornerstone of India’s agricultural sector, wielding substantial influence over the nation’s economic landscape. Comprising an extensive range of fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, plantation crops, spices, and medicinal herbs, this sector has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation in recent years. The significance of horticultural crops extends beyond sheer economic value, permeating various facets of Indian agriculture and socio-economic development (Ravichandra & Ravichandra 2014).The unique agro-climatic diversity of India allows for the cultivation of an unparalleled variety of horticultural produce, contributing to its global prominence as a horticultural powerhouse.

Introduction

Salinity is a significant abiotic stress faced by plants, particularly in semi-arid and arid regions of the world, where annual evaporation exceeds precipitation. In addition, approximately half of all the world’s irrigated areas are subjected to secondary salinization, alkalization, and waterlogging. About 8.85 million ha of land in India is degraded due to salinity and alkalinity problems. Besides the naturally occurring salt-affected soils, the extent of man-made salinized soil is also significant. Salt accumulation in the root zone layers of soils becomes a major constraint to agricultural productivity. However, such lands can effectively be utilized for salt-tolerant biological systems.

To survive under high salt concentrations, some plant species evolved well adapted morphological and physiological characteristics, allowing them to proliferate in saline environments. These species are known as halophytes. Halophytes constitute a small fraction of total plant species; they represent a wide diversity of plant forms and habitats and are of immense significance in expanding salinity problems and decreasing freshwater supply for agriculture. These salt-tolerant species possess enormous taxonomical plant forms and habitat diversity. Taxonomically, the species belonging to Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Chenopodiaceae, and Asteraceae families constitute a significant share of salt tolerant species of north-western hot arid regions of India. In the herbaceous plant group, the species of the family Poaceae are most abundant. In the case of woody perennials, Chenopodiaceae, Tamaricaceae, and Salvadoraceae families are essential as true halophyte and facultative halophyte species.

The vegetable crops like knol-khol, Broccoli and kale belong to the genus brassica of the cruciferae family. They are essentially cold weather, hardy crops and thrive best in cool moist season. These crops, if grown under warm conditions, the produce become pungent due to development of glucocide called sinigrin containing sulphur. According to Chowdary (1967), the crops of this group have developed from wild cliff cabbage, also known as cole wrots, from which the name cole has been given. Their taste founds to be more sweat in hills due to low temperature and constitute at top in the list of preference vegetables for people all over India.

This chapter attempts to describe the cultivation of these three cole crops, exclusively grown in hills of India.

Knol-Khol

Knol-khol (Brassica oleracea var. gonylodes) is a well known green–leafy vegetable, which is consumed with leaves and knobs. It is popular among Kashmiri people and the people of hilly areas. Its cultivation is confined to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pardesh, West Bengal, Uttranchal and Punjab. Due to its year round demand and conducive agro-climate available in J&K, it can be cultivated round the year. The crop is of short duration and be grown three to four times a year. Thus it gives very high productivity per unit area.

After assessing the prevalence or incidence of the disease concerned, the next step is to quantify the economic losses due to that disease by classifying and presenting all the information available on the losses, expressing these in monetary values, and identifying and quantifying the indirect losses attributable to a disease, to the extent possible. Usually, most of the negative effects of diseases can be conveniently estimated in terms of reduced output, mortality, reduced weight, delayed maturity, and treatment cost, directly. However, quantifying the indirect effects of the disease will be complex, but it is not impossible.

As we saw earlier, the economic impacts of animal diseases can be measured using statistical / epidemiological methods and economic methods. Economic methods of disease loss estimation include the Gross Margin Analysis, Enterprise Budgeting, Equi-Marginal Principle, Partial Budgeting, Cost Benefit Analysis, and Decision Analysis.

INTRODUCTION

Farming acts as the primary occupation of majority of the population in India. According to National Sample Survey Estimate, about 49% of the Indian population is dependent on agriculture and allied industries (GOI, 2014, CIA, 2012) making it the largest source of employment to the people of India. Although, being a second largest food producing country in the world (Sarkar, 2009), the contribution of agriculture to the GDP has been declining. The contribution of agriculture to Indian GDP has declined from 30% in 1991 to 15% in 2011-2012 to 13.7% in 2013 (Economic Survey. 2013-2014). This decline is also accompanied by a decline in the participation of people in Indian farming sector. In fact between 2001 and 2011 about 9 million people have quit farming, which is about 2 million more than the decline noted in the previous decade (GOI, 2011). This figure equates to about 2035 farmers quitting farming per day. The recent census (GOI, 2011) also highlighted that for the first time in four decades an absolute decline (about 7%) in the cultivators has been noted.

During the last visit of Barak Obama in the year 2011, he pointed out that India is fortunate to have a youth population with a half of the total population being under the age of 30-35 years. Out of 600 million young people, over 60% live in villages and majority of them are educated. Mahatma Gandhi considered that migration of rural youth from villages to town and cities as the most serious form of brain drain affecting adversely rural India’s development. The National Commission on Farmers stressed the need for attracting and retaining rural youth in farming. Recently, National Sample Survey has indicated that over 45% people want to quit farming under these condition there is need to persuade educated youth including farm graduates to stay in villages and take up agriculture as a profession. Among various animal husbandry enterprises, poultry production has emerged as number one position and attained industrial status in many countries, including India.

This tremendous growth in poultry production is due to the following reasons:

There is no religious taboo towards poultry and poultry products.

Egg is the most nutritious, natural, unadulterated and easily digestible food with the highest biological value.

Eggs can be consumed by all age groups and economic classes, since it is the cheapest among all the nutritious natural foods on the earth.

Among various meats, poultry meat has the highest protein, lowest fat and cholesterol content.

Poultry is the best converter of feed into meat and eggs. A hen needs only 1.5 kg feed to produce 1 dozen eggs. Similarly a broiler needs less than 2 kg of feed to produce one kg broiler meat whereas other species need more than 3 kg of feed to produce 1kg of meat.

Poultry has the shortest generation interval among various livestocks.

More than any other living organisms, insects have more intimate and complex relationship with man. It is well known that insects affect human interests both for good and bad. However, their injurious activities are of much greater concern to man than the beneficial aspects of their activities. Several insects are beneficial to man in several ways, both directly and indirectly and there are scores of other insects, which do not interfere with the interests of man in any way.

From the time man stepped into the domain of insects, a stifle has started between the insects and man. To meet his various demands for food, clothing, shelter and various other requirements, man cultivates various crops and raises many domesticated livestock. Unfortunately for man, insects also have started depending on these for their living. When the requirements for man and insects happen to be the same, a race is on for their survival and existence. Insects attack plants and livestock and cause extensive damage and economic loss. So, man considers such injurious insects as his enemy and to safeguard his interests tries to destroy them by various means. However, man’s supremacy and intelligence have not proved a match to the rapid propagation of insects and their various adaptations to withstand any hardship and adverse conditions. In the effort to gain an upper hand, it has not been possible for man to destroy the unwanted insects completely and the struggle is going on as a never-ending ordeal.

Introduction

Tripura is a small state blessed with rich flora and fauna. The small scale aquaculture with other agricultural enterprises and allied economic activities are common practice followed by majority of the farmers in rural areas. The small scale aquaculture is not only common in rural areas but is also practiced in the backyard ponds in urban which have multiple uses. The homestead fish production is common in Tripura because fish is highly preferred food item in the diet of about 95% people of Tripura. But due to the subsistence level of aquaculture practices in the state, productivity and production of fish is quite insufficient to meet out market demand for fish. Though the state Government and other stakeholders of fish production systems are making relentless effort to enhance the production to the level of 74 MT to meet the current market demand, the average fish productivity in the state is comparatively lower as compared to many states of the country. The lower productivity is an important issue and one of the major impediments in enhancing fish production in the state. The experts and research finding have identified several factors such as short culture period, acidic nature of soil and water, more iron content, poor quality of seed, improper feeding, lack of technical knowhow etc are the main reasons behind the lower productivity. Still, there are many other issues uncovered and unaddressed which may be the lower growth of fishes and consequent lower fish productivity. For instance, factors like pond size and number of species in the culture system at farmers’ level may also have impact on the farm productivity. It is necessary to adopt region-specific models for furthering freshwater aquaculture in view of the available aquatic biodiversity as well as the consumer preferences and economics of operations in different parts of the country (Ayappan et al, 2009). This is particularly important considering polyculture is the major form of aquaculture in the state. Datta 2015, has opined that due to consumer’s preference, high market value as well as conservation-revitalization of various cultivable species, importance of diversification in culture of various species has been found of immense importance in the present aquaculture scenario. Among the species, endemic minor carps, catfishes in monoculture, perches, murrels live species are important. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyse level of species diversification at the farm level and their socio-economic and scientific significance at farm level.

Abstract

Solid waste, the creation of human being, is taken today the shape of a Demon to kill its creator by polluting breathing air, drinking water and essential food materials. It spreads different infectious killer diseases if not disposed off timely. Municipal authorities are spending lakhs of rupees to collect and transport solid wastes to dump-yard. Presence of both biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes together in dustbin makes the disposal problematic and Municipal workers handling solid wastes suffer injury and disease infections. Municipal authority can clear about 50 percent of solid wastes either by dumping in low lying areas or by burning in open places causing unwanted environmental pollutions. Incinerations with electric producing facility, pyrolysis, dumping in properly built concrete landfills, Pelletization are scientific techniques for solid waste management. But recycling as resource materials is the best economical approach. Since non-biodegradable wastes can be sold to scrap dwellers for further processing it offers income opportunity. Biodegradable wastes can be converted to good quality vermicompost, which is also a marketable product and fetch good income. Different activities during recycling of solid wastes offer employment opportunities to literate & illiterate, skilled & unskilled, male & female, young & old workers. The present ‘Treatment at the end of pipe’ approach is to be changed by ‘Treatment at source’ approach.

1. House Plant

The screwpines or kewda plants are characteristics of many tropical regions with long ringed trunks, bracing roots and crowns of Dracaena-like foliage. The young plants are amongst the most popular foliage plants for home decoration as the plants do not flower at early stages (Wickham, 1950). They are also grown as pot and tub specimens for green house, residence, veranda and lawn decoration where their stiff clustered foliage gives them a formal decorative character. They may be kept as indoor ornamental foliage plants in the warm and semi light places of a house. (Wickham, 1982a).

2. Fence

The plant is useful for binding the soil, so checks soil erosion and not browsed by the cattle due to its spiny leaves; hence sometimes used as fence around the crop field in the coastal districts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Gujrat. The plants are often used for hedges as in the Casuarina plantations at Puri of Odisha (Haines, 1961a) (Fig. 17).

One of its key strengths lies in reduced dependency on costly inputs like synthetic drugs, chemicals, and advanced machinery. By employing traditional hive models, natural pest control methods, and organic feeding practices, operational costs are kept low, making the venture accessible to small and marginal farmers with limited capital resources. Natural beekeeping yields multiple marketable products beyond honey, enabling producers to diversify their income. Products like beeswax and royal jelly are in demand in premium sectors, both domestically and globally. With multiple harvests across seasons, this diversity ensures consistent revenue and improved economic resilience. Global consumer trends increasingly favor natural, organic, and chemical-free products due to their health and environmental appeal. As a result, natural honey and related derivatives are gaining traction in wellness, skincare, and gourmet food markets, creating promising opportunities for certified natural beekeepers to access niche segments and export markets. Although, beekeeping is labor-intensive, it can be easily integrated with existing agricultural practices, making it a practical source of supplementary income for rural families. It not only creates direct jobs in hive care and product processing but also fosters indirect employment in areas like packaging, transportation, and value chain development. Women and indigenous communities, in particular, benefit due to the inclusivity and low entry barriers of this enterprise.

Model Project for Setting Up 10 & 20 Cow Dairy Farm (Indicative)

Livestock economics and marketing plays an important role in the economy of farmers in the country. Marketing of goats and goat products suffers from many drawbacks such as involvement of middlemen, avoidable marketing cost, and unnecessary transportation, mortality of animals during transit leading to exploitation of both producers and the consumers. Goat keeping and marketing is fraught with risks. Risks in goat keeping can be managed or reduced but cannot be completely eliminated. Some of the precautions needed include following the recommended systems of management and health care, use good feeding and vaccination schedules and master the art of marketing. Marketing of goat is under the hand of unorganized sector and middleman oriented. Goat producers themselves are most often involved in informal market systems which lead to underestimation of goats’ contribution to the rural and national economy. Goats from villages are sold to middleman or butcher or in the local goat market that go to the slaughterhouses of organized or unorganized sector. Male goat is sold at the age of 12-15 months and at higher prices. However, farmer grows the male goat to sell in festive season for more profit. Market Goat price is highly variable. It differs from region to region. In area where good breeds of goat found, the prices are more for these animals. It also depends on health, body status, production potential and market demand for meat/milk of animals. Infact, male goat is sacrificed before God in many places. Goat market price gets higher during the festive season of Bakrid. “Bakra bech rahe ho ya sona,” a customer was heard exclaiming at Nai Sadak Mandi, considered the biggest goat market in Kanpur. During Bakri Id, male goat is sold even at the cost of Rs 30-35 thousand. Similar stories are commonplace in most other goat markets. Lame and ailing goats are not purchased by customers for sacrificial purpose. For this purpose goats which are at least a year old are purchased. They are recognised by their two teeth.If animal is young one (1-2 yrs old & or pregnant), then price is higher than old animal. Female goats are sold to market for slaughter at the end of their productive life (Spent goat. Normally goats are sold on lot basis and not on body weight basis. With advancing knowledge, the farmers are now demanding price on body weight basis.

Fish and shellfish seed rearing forms the foundation of a successful and sustainable aquaculture industry. It involves the breeding, hatching, and nurturing of fish or shellfish larvae until they reach a size suitable for stocking in grow-out systems such as ponds, tanks, or cages. This early stage of aquaculture not only determines the quality and survival rate of the final harvest but also influences the overall productivity and profitability of the sector. Economically, seed rearing requires substantial initial investment in infrastructure, broodstock procurement, and operational costs like feed, energy, and skilled manpower. However, with efficient management and species-specific best practices, it offers high returns due to growing demand for quality seed across freshwater, brackish water, and marine aquaculture systems. From a policy perspective, government interventions such as capital subsidies, training programs, and biosecurity regulations aim to improve seed quality, promote entrepreneurship, and enhance the availability of certified seed stock. Schemes under PMMSY, NFDB, and state-level fisheries departments provide financial and technical assistance to individual hatcheries, FPOs, and cooperatives. Moreover, the introduction of hatchery accreditation and seed certification frameworks is vital for ensuring uniformity, disease-free stock, and farmer trust. Thus, seed rearing is both a critical technical operation and a key economic driver in India’s evolving fisheries landscape.
COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF SMALL-SCALE SEED UNITS
A cost-benefit analysis of small-scale seed units in Indian aquaculture reveals promising profitability and their significant contribution to the broader aquaculture sector. While specific data may differ across regions and practices, various studies have consistently demonstrated benefit-cost ratios (BCR) ranging between 1.67 and 3.01. These units play a vital role in improving survival rates of fish seed, facilitating acclimatization to the growing environment, and reducing transportation-related stress and costs.

Rainfed areas currently constitute 55 per cent of the net sown area of India and are home to two-thirds of livestock and 40 per cent of human population. Livestock plays an important role in the rainfed agro-ecosystem, because of inherent risk involved in the crop farming. The aspect of milk production costs in the country need to be reduced to make the dairy industry competitive. The milk production costs are generally high because of small herd size, difficult collection conditions in hills and high feed costs. Cost of production of rearing animals can be reduced either by improving per unit productivity or reducing feed cost which is the major constituent of total cost. The scientific practices of growing feed and fodder needs to be disseminated among the farmers for increasing the efficiency of dairy animals.

Forages also contribute in prevention of soil erosion and decline in organic matter and fertility. They can also help in reducing nitrogen fertilizer costs and the energy costs associated with application of nutrients.This chapter attempts to determine the economics of different fodder and fodder seed crops for highlighting their importance in the livestock sector in hills.

Introduction

Livestock are vital to subsistence farming and sustainable livelihood in most developing countries. Of India’s population of one billion people, more than 70 percent live in the rural areas. India also has more than 30 percent of the world’s bovine population. So, Milk production costs are generally high Livestock rearing plays a significant role in the economy of the Indian people. Crop residues and pastures / grasslands are the major feed resource for this activity.

Climatic, topography, physiographic factors, altitude and related aspects have influenced the distribution of various crop and grass species, which determine the fodder/forages production both qualitatively and quantitatively (Whyte, 1968). Though livestock rearing is an important occupation of farmers in India, the scientific forage cultivation has remained almost neglected. Thoughtless cutting of trees and indiscriminate use of grazing areas has lead to denudation of hill slopes, which has resulted in critically low biomass availability and adverse effects on livestock production in hills and thus, the livestock productivity remains very low.

Agricultural Economics is an applied discipline that examines the economics of agricultural commodity production, marketing, exchange, and consumption in the economy. It largely focuses on how a society decides to use its limited resources, which have alternative uses, to produce things for both current and future consumption. Due to this shortage, people are forced to choose between options, and economic knowledge is utilised to compare the options and select the best one. For example, a farmer can grow paddy, sugarcane, banana, cotton etc. in his garden land. But he has to choose a combination of crops depending upon the availability of labour and irrigation water.

The emergence of economic problems is caused by two key reasons.. They are: (i) the existence of unlimited human wants and (ii) the scarcity of available resources. The existence of human wants is the starting point of all economic activity in the world. Unless we make efforts, we cannot satisfy wants. Hence, wants, efforts and satisfaction form the circle of economics. Thus, the science of economics focuses around want - effort - satisfaction.

Approaches to study subject matter of economics

Economics studies human economic activities, which involve the creation, use, exchange, and distribution of wealth.

This approach splits economic activities into four interconnected areas:
Consumption, Production, Exchange, and Distribution (CPED).
1. Consumption – Using Goods & Services
Consumption refers to the utilization of goods and services to satisfy human needs and wants. It involves the destruction of utility, meaning that once a good or service is consumed, it cannot be reused in its original form i.e. once used, their original form is gone (utility destroyed) Economics studies the nature of human wants, their characteristics, and how individuals make consumption decisions.

Cashew is one major crop of Konkan region of Maharashtra and requires comparatively less expenditure for cultivation as compared with other crops. Under normal planting density (7m x 7m), about 200 plants/ha are occupied. If the cashew grower has its own land, then for first five year of orchard establishment and maintenance, total expenditure of Rs. 47447 is come up. Year wise expenditure (first five years) on cashew cultivation per hectare is presented in Table 61.

There are three types of disease occurrence namely, endemic, epidemic and outbreaks. Martin et al. (1993) described the term endemic as the disease occurrence in a predictable pattern. There can be low, moderate or high levels of endemicity. Although many times the terms epidemic and outbreak are used synonymously, the term epidemic is used when there is an unexpected incidence of a disease. Thrusfield (1995) defined an outbreak as the occurrence of a disease involving one or more animals.

Animal disease prevention and control activities offer valuable benefits for food production, food security and safety, animal and human welfare, and alleviation of poverty. The effectiveness of disease prevention and control policies depends on the good governance and quality of the veterinary services, in compliance with OIE standards and guidelines on animal disease control. The apex body in each country is the core system that takes care of the prevention and control of animal diseases. This body is responsible for early detection of diseases and rapid response to outbreaks. The veterinary services in developing countries require adequate human and financial resources and capacity building to carry out the tasks of disease prevention and control and to protect animal health and thus public health, including food security and food safety.

Abstract

Kachchh with 45,652 sq. km. geographical area is the biggest district of Gujarat. The monsoon is very erratic and the frequent occurrence of drought or scarcity of rainfall is very common feature in this region. The soils as well as water are saline at most of the places and the irrigation is mainly through underground water. The agriculture under these conditions is becoming increasingly vulnerable. Hence a study was conducted to assess the economic viability of crops having access to assured irrigation facility in Kachchh district of arid Gujarat in 2009. A total of 60 farmers were randomly selected for detailed data collection from five selected villages in three talukas namely Bhuj, Anjar and Mundra. The study revealed that cultivation of cereal crops like pearl millet and wheat was mainly to meet out family needs while cultivation of crops like cotton, castor, groundnut, mustard and coriander was solely for market purpose and intention is to maximize the returns per unit of investment.

In order to assess the economic value of biochar, various factors need to be taken into account, including production expenses, market demand, potential income sources, and cost reductions. The economic worth of biochar can be determined by considering these factors.

8.1 Production costs

The cost of producing biochar can differ based on various factors such as the type of material used, the scale of production, the method of pyrolysis used, and the particular operational conditions.

i. Feedstock costs

• The cost of acquiring or producing biomass feedstock includes purchasing agricultural residues, forestry waste, or other biomass sources. Additional costs such as land, seeds, fertilizers, and harvesting should be considered using dedicated energy crops.

The demand for biofuels has been steadily increasing due to environmental concerns, government promotional policies, and technological advancements. The factors driving biofuel demand, current market trends, and future projections are the global demand for biofuels is experiencing rapid growth due to government policies, energy security concerns, and advancements in sustainable biofuel production. As more countries implement biofuel mandates and invest in next-generation biofuels, demand is expected to rise significantly in the coming years, positioning biofuels as a critical component of the global energy transition. Governments worldwide have implemented various policies to promote biofuel production and consumption. These policies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and support rural economies. Ethanol remains the most widely used biofuel, with major producers like the U.S., Brazil, and China increasing production to meet rising demand. The U.S. and Brazil collectively account for over 80% of global ethanol production. Bioethanol production originated in Brazil in the early 20th century, where sugarcane was used to produce ethanol as a fuel additive. However, the United States also played a significant role in the large-scale commercialization of bioethanol, especially from corn, starting in the 1970s during the oil crisis. Brazil remains a global leader in sugarcane-based ethanol, while the U.S. leads in corn-based ethanol production. Biodiesel demand is growing, particularly in the European Union, Indonesia, and Argentina. Indonesia’s B30 program (30% biodiesel blending) has significantly boosted demand. Between 2005 and 2015, the biodiesel production experienced a sevenfold increase and is projected to grow by an additional 35% by 2025 (OECD/ FAO, 2014). Biofuel policies have played a crucial role in shaping the growth of biofuel production worldwide. Since their inception, these policies have provided financial incentives, blending mandates, and research support, which have driven large-scale production. The impact of these policies varies across major biofuelproducing nations, including the United States, Brazil, the European Union, China, and India (Table 1). The U.S. biofuel industry expanded significantly due to the

Kewda plants are mostly propagated through vegetative means. The common propagating materials used are ground suckers. The planting materials are planted in paired-row method maintaining a spacing of 4m from plant to plant and row to row keeping a spacing of 6 m between paired rows. In a field of one hectare, a minimum plant population of 500 plants in the field and 150 plants on the field bunds with a total of 650 plants are maintained. A fertilizer dose of 30:15:15 kg NPK/ha and 4 cartloads (100 cft) of FYM/ha are applied. The planting of collected ground suckers is normally done in the field just before monsoon after thorough land preparation under rainfed condition.The earthing-up of the plants are done up to five years of planting for quick initiation of flowering at the age of 5 years after planting. During the first year, the operational cost per hectare comes to Rs.28,900/- and from 2^nd to 5^th years, it comes to Rs.6,600 per year and then the maintenance cost from 6^th year onwards comes to Rs.6,000/- per year. The details of the operational cost per hectare of kewda cultivation under rainfed condition of coastal Ganjam district is given at Table 23. Kewda plant comes to flower on the 5^th year of planting, but the annual net profit begins on the 6^th year of planting and the cumulative net profit starts on the 10^th year (Table 24). The economic viability of kewda plantations is observed from 10^th to 30^th year of planting and after 30^th year, the net profit declines. A farmer can earn an annual profit of Rs.61,000/- per hectare of kewda cultivation from 11^th to 15^th year, which goes on increasing and from 26^th to 30^th year, the annual net return reached to Rs.1,23,400/- with a cumulative return of Rs.4,04,970/- on the 30^th year of planting. Then at the age of 35^th year, it declines to Rs.1,07,800/ - and at 40^th year to Rs.87,000/- per annum (Table 24). Although the profit was calculated only on the basis of sale of flowers yield, some additional profit can be obtained from other plant parts like leaves and stilt roots. After distillation of one lakh flowers, the spent over flowers and plant parts can be utilized as fertilizer/manure by selling at a rate of Rs.1000/- per batch. In the two blocks (viz., Chhatrapur and Rangeilunda) of Ganjam district, about 7,000 women are engaged for collection of flowers, leaves and stilt roots and they prepare ropes and other household items from the roots and leaves. It has been observed that one female can prepare 12 bundles of ropes each of 12 m length and the sale rate of rope is about Rs.10/- per metre. The ropes are sent to the markets of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu) for sale. The profit can also be increased by incorporating some inter-crops like Casuarina, coconut, Agasti and medicinal crops like Patchouli etc. Further, kewda can be taken on the sand dunes and waste saline land of the coastal lines, where no other crops can be grown profitably. Hence, kewda needs better attention for its extensive cultivation with a foresight on the perfume industry.

11.1 Introduction

Economic analysis is the most important parameter for determining the optimum size of farm pond. It is, no doubt that a big size farm pond can meet the irrigation demand of the crops grown in the command areas in addition to meeting the other demand in the command areas. But a big size farm pond is an oversize structure which necessitates large investment to be incurred which may not be economically viable. On the other hand, a small size structure may not be able to meet the crop water demand and also other demands in the command areas and so is called as under-designed structure. It has been observed that as the size of the farm pond gradually increases from a certain minimum size, the total investment cost increases. At the same time, the benefits from the increasing storage capacity of the farm pond also get increased. In such cases, from a purely business point of view, the most economical capacity is that which provides the highest rate of return on investment. As the size of the farm pond increases, the proportion of the benefit/profit to the cost also increases from certain minimum size, attains maximum value at a particular size and then declines as the size further increases. This particular size of the farm pond at which the net profit is maximum, is called as the optimum size. It is to be noted that at the optimum size, the other economic indicators like the benefit-cost ratio and internal rate of return are also high. The variation of net profit with size of the farm pond is a concave curve. The size of the farm pond corresponding to the peak of the curve which represents the highest net profit is the optimum size of the pond.

The principle of obtaining the optimum size of farm pond is to first assume a certain minimum size say five percent of the farm area and conduct the economic analysis by studying the costs and net profits of the assumed size. Then the size is gradually increased and the economic analysis is conducted for each increased size. Then a curve relating the size of the farm pond and net profit is drawn. Such a curve is generally concave shaped. The size of the structure corresponding to the maximum net profit gives the optimum size. It is to be noted that any size chosen more or less than the optimum size would give less net profit and benefit-cost ratio than that of the optimum size.

The economics surrounding fish feed production are crucial in determining the profitability and sustainability of aquaculture operations. With feed expenses making up 60 to 70 percent of total fish farming costs, optimizing feed manufacturing and management is essential for improving financial returns. The feed production cost structure encompasses raw material sourcing, processing, labor, equipment upkeep, quality control, packaging, and logistics. Among these, protein-rich ingredients such as fishmeal and soybean meal represent the highest expenditure, and fluctuations in their prices significantly affect overall feed costs. To address this, producers often explore affordable alternatives and substitute ingredients that maintain nutritional standards. Additionally, large-scale feed mills benefit from economies of scale, achieving lower production costs through bulk buying, mechanization, and efficient processes, whereas smaller units often struggle with higher expenses and limited market access. Feed formulation is designed for both nutritional efficiency and costeffectiveness. The use of advanced software allows for precise ingredient balancing to meet dietary needs while minimizing expenses, thereby improving feed conversion ratios (FCR) and reducing waste. Investments in processing innovations like extrusion and automated packaging enhance feed durability and quality, supporting premium pricing and minimizing spoilage. Effective branding, marketing, and customer service also contribute to the economic strength of feed businesses.

Cost of production of fodder is critical in deciding the profitability of fodder production and livestock production. In intensive animal farming, fodder plays a vital, because of the reason that, most of the feeding regimen of dairy cattle, buffalo and small ruminant production system is fodder based. Fodder make out the bulk o feed expenditure apart from compounded feed. Understanding the economics of fodder production is vital in production of fodder in livestock farms.

In India, only two species viz. Capsicum annuum and Capsicum frutescens are known and most of the cultivated varieties belong to the species Capsicum annum. Insect pests and diseases are among the major constraints to enhancing production and productivity of chilli. There are a number of diseases, bacterial and viral infections that can attack chilli plants. They can sometimes be difficult to identify as they can have similar symptoms. The limited availability of commercial cultivars, resistant to pests and diseases especially in hilly areas affects its productivity. This makes more important for the farmers to rely on proper management practices to control pests and diseases.

This chapter attempts to brief the effect of insect pest and diseases on production of chilli. It also describes the proper management techniques of insect pests and diseases in chilli, highlighting the economics of their management. The chapter covers the description of insect pests of chilli like Aphid, Red Spider Mite, Slugs and Snails, Caterpillars, Capsid Bugs and Thrips and diseases like Bacterial Wilt, Anthracnose, Cercospora Leaf Spot, Damping off and Leaf Curl.

Introduction

India is a major producer, exporter and consumer of chilli. Chilli (Capsicum annuum) belongs to the genus Capsicum under Solanaceae family. It is also called as hot pepper, cayenne pepper, sweet pepper etc. Chilli besides imparting pungency and red colour to the dishes is a rich source of vitamin A, C and E and assists in digestion. Recently, Russian scientists have identified Vitamin P in green chilli which is considered to be important as it protects from secondary irradiation injury. The pungency in chilli is due to an alkaloid capsaicin which has high medicinal value. Capsaicin has many medicinal properties, especially as an anti-cancerous agent and instant pain reliever. It also prevents heart diseases by dilating blood vessels. The Chilli plant is a white flowered, dark green or purple leaved plant that grows upto 1.5 m in height. The major chilli exporting countries with their percentage share in world total exports are India (25 %), China (24 %), Spain (17 %), Mexico (8 %), Pakistan (7.2 %), Morocco (7 %) and Turkey (4.5 %).

Integrated fish farming, combining fish cultivation with other agricultural or livestock practices, offers significant economic advantages, including increased production, reduced costs, and diversified income streams. By utilizing farm waste and resources effectively, it maximizes the return on land and water, leading to higher profits and improved sustainability.
CAPITAL AND OPERATIONAL COSTS
In integrated fish farming, capital costs cover initial investments like pond construction and equipment, while operational costs include ongoing expenses like feed, labor, and maintenance. Capital costs are the one-time investments needed to start the business, while operational costs are recurring expenses that vary with the level of production.
Cost Savings Through Resource Recycling
1. Fertilizer Replacement: Livestock manure, pond sludge, and biogas slurry together supply the majority of nutrient requirements for fish ponds and crop beds. By replacing up to 80% of chemical fertilizers, integrated farms save INR 10,000–20,000 per hectare per crop cycle.
2. Feed Efficiency: Natural pond productivity—boosted by organic wastes— provides 30–50 kg of natural fish feed per hectare per day. This can reduce commercial feed costs by 20–40%, saving up to INR 15–25 per kg of fish produced.
3. Energy Co-benefits: On-farm biogas from manure offsets 2–4 cylinderequivalents of LPG per household annually (INR 3,600–7,200 value), while recirculating aquaculture (RAS) reduces freshwater pumping energy by 50– 70%.

The economic dimension of natural feed management is fundamental to achieving sustainability in livestock farming, especially because feed representsthe most significant recurring expenditure in animal rearing. Through the adoption of farm-based inputs and time-tested traditional methods, natural feed management minimizes dependence on commercially manufactured feeds, thereby boosting the profitability of small and marginal farming enterprises. In contrast to intensive livestock systems that rely on costly, externally sourced feed, natural farming makes effective use of green fodder, crop residues, kitchen scraps, and locally available alternatives like azolla, moringa leaves, and oilseed cakes many of which are low-cost or readily accessible on the farm.
Significant cost reductions stem from practices such as reusing farm waste, relying on indigenous knowledge for formulating diets, and forgoing synthetic additives and antibiotics. For instance, preserving excess green fodder as silage or hay secures feed supplies for dry periods without resorting to market purchases. Additionally, natural supplements like fermented cow dung and urine mixtures (e.g., Jeevamrit), along with turmeric and neem leaves, offer economical substitutes for commercial growth promoters and veterinary drugs. These approaches contribute to healthier livestock, reduce veterinary interventions, and enhance product quality by avoiding chemical residues.

ABSTRACT

India is one of the leading coconuts producing country in the world. Yet, it does not figure in the list of leading exporting countries of desiccated coconut. The study makes an attempt to examine the Economics of production and marketing of desiccated coconut. The study was conducted in Tiptur taluk of Tumkur district. The primary data was collected from the 10 desiccated coconut entrepreneurs from Tipturtaluk of Tumkur district of Karnataka. The study reveals that desiccated coconut units were utilizing 78.9 per cent of their installed capacity. The net return per tonne of coconut processed by desiccated coconut units was lakh Rs. 32.1, lakh Rs.81.1, and lakh Rs. 114.5 in case of small, medium, and large sized units respectively. On an average Rs. 144.01 lakhs was needed for the establishment of desiccated coconut unit. Out of which the investment on land (53.64%) was a major cost followed by machinery (26.15%), building (15.11%), and power installation (5.11%). The break even analysis showed that all categories of units had processed more than breakeven level. The investment made on desiccated coconut units was realized back within 2 to 3 years. The major constraints faced by desiccated coconut units were lack of skilled labor, limited market for desiccated coconut, higher requirement of working capital, and use of obsolete machines.
