Concentrated milk products are obtained through partial removal of water which increases the dry matter content of milk. The increase in dry matter content in concentrated milk is proportional to the degree of concentration. The milk concentrate may be prepared from either full-cream whole milk or fat-free skim milk.

Depending on the nature of raw material and other non-milk additives concentrated milks are classified into four broad categories.

1. Sweetened condensed milk

2. Evaporated milk or unsweetened condensed milk

3. Sterile milk concentrate

4. Reconstituted concentrated milk

Sweetened Condensed Milk

One of the earliest dairy products to be produced industrially is sweetened condensed milk. According to FSSA (2006), sweetened condensed milk is the product obtained by partial removal of water from the milk of cow/buffalo with the addition of sugar or a combination of sucrose with other sugars or by any other process that leads to a product of the same composition and characteristics. The fat and/or protein content of the milk may be adjusted by the addition and/or withdrawal of milk constituents in such a way as not to alter the whey protein to casein ratio of the milk being adjusted. It shall have a pleasant taste and flavor and be free from off-flavor and rancidity. It shall be free from any substance foreign to milk. It may contain food additives. It shall conform to the microbiological requirement as laid down by FSSA. The said product shall also conform to the following requirements

Commercially, one of the most significant milk products is ice cream. It is a frozen product which is usually made from milk or cream that has been f lavored with fruits like peaches or strawberries, and spices like vanilla or cocoa, or with sugar or a substitute. Stabilizers are sometimes combined with food coloring. Ice cream mix typically contains 10.0% milk fat, 11.0% solids not-fat, 14.0% added sugar, and 0.3% additives like an emulsifier, stabilizer, f lavor, and color substances.

Standard of Ice Cream

According to FSSA (2006), ice cream, kulfi, chocolate ice cream or softy ice cream means the product obtained by freezing pasteurized milk prepared from milk and/or other products derived from milk with the addition of sweetening agents and fruit products, egg products, coffee, cocoa, ginger, and nuts. It may also contain chocolate, and bakery products such as cake or cookies as a separate layer and/or coating. It may be frozen hard or frozen to a soft consistency. It shall be free from artificial sweeteners. It shall have a pleasant taste and smell free from flavor and rancidity. It may contain food additives. It shall conform to the microbiological requirements as given in FSSA (2006).

Food adulteration is a global issue, and because there are insufficient regulations and oversight, developing nations are more vulnerable to it. But in many nations, food adulteration has gone unnoticed. Contrary to popular assumption, milk adulterants can, regrettably, present major health risks that result in fatal diseases. Modern milk adulteration involves increasingly complex techniques, necessitating state- of- the- art research to identify the adulterants. Because milk contains so many nutrients that are needed by both adults and infants, it is referred to as the ideal food. In terms of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, it is among the best sources. Regretfully, milk adulteration is a very common problem worldwide. Potential causes could be the gap between supply and demand, the perishable nature of milk, the low purchasing power of the consumer, and the absence of appropriate detection tests. Because there is insufficient oversight and inadequate law enforcement, the situation is substantially worse in developing and underdeveloped nations. While quantitative detections of adulterants in milk are varied and complex, qualitative detections can be carried out simply using chemical reactions. The type of quantitative detection methods used depends on the milk’s adulterants.

Typical Adulterants in Milk

The addition of vegetable protein, milk from different species, whey addition, and watering are the main adulterants in milk that are known to be economically motivated. There is no serious health risk associated with these adulterations. Some adulterants, though, are too dangerous to ignore. Urea, formalin, detergents, ammonium sulfate, boric acid, caustic soda, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, hydrogen peroxide, sugars, and melamine are a few of the main adulterants in milk that have been shown to have serious negative health effects.

Vitamins are natural and indispensable nutrients that are essential for our bodies in small quantities. Vitamins are indispensable for a multitude of biological functions, including growth, development, wound healing, maintaining healthy bones and tissues, supporting the immune system, and more. These vital organic compounds exhibit diverse biochemical functions and are essential for metabolic processes. The discovery of vitamins dates back to 1912 when Casimir Funk, a Polish American biochemist, initiated research on their sources, functions, and deficiency disorders. Because of his groundbreaking work, Funk is widely recognized as the pioneer of vitamins.

Types of vitamins

The classification of vitamins is determined by their solubility, resulting in two distinct groups: fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins.

Fat-soluble vitamins

Fat-soluble vitamins, as their name implies, need fat for absorption and are stored in the fat cells. These vitamins include Vitamin A, D, E, and K.

Most of ultrasound machines are designed for imaging with a particular resolution linear and convex transducers. These machines can be used for general purpose for abdominal, obstetrics, gynecological, small parts, urology and cardiac applications. Most of the machines have standard measurement software viz. distance, area, volume, circumference, and obstetrical gestational age measurement for BPD, HC, AC, FL, GS, CRL, AD and FW.

Assessment of probes: One should examine the probe whether it is linear array or curved (convex) array. The probe should also be checked for its frequency. These days multi-frequency probes are supplied with the ultrasound-machine. These multiple frequencies could be 2.0 to 5.0 MHz with centrally fixed frequency of 3.5 MHz. The frequencies could be 4.0 to 7.0 (5.0 MHz setting), 5.0 to 9.0 MHz (7.5 MHz setting). The area and depth covered by various frequencies should be known.

Before setting the ultrasound machine, one should make sure of all the auxiliary devices for the machines. These are Thermal video printer, Ultrasound gel, Biopsy needle, image saving devices (USB device or internal saving mechanism), wire, Uninterrupted Power Supply etc.

Identifying and knowing the main system: One should note down the name and model of ultrasound machine as these are quoted in all the documents published with the ultrascan images generated on that particular machine. It is written on one side of front panel. On the front panel, there are various knobs for proper setting. One should locate the auxiliary power switch of the machine to begin with. Generally, there is power indicator on the machine that shows light on when power button is pushed to on position. The auxiliary power switch may also have indications of its ON and OFF positions, may be marked with 0 and 1 or other symbols. As shown in the figure below, there are various operating buttons on the operating panel. These might vary from Machine to Machine.

Failure to accurately diagnose ovarian function is said to be one of the reason for poor reproductive efficiency in this species. The information regarding ovarian function can be gathered either by observing the reproductive behavior of the animal, status of reproductive hormones or palpation of ovaries per rectum for the presence of cyclic or pathological structures. However, due to poor expression of estrus signs behavioral observations poorly reflect the accurate information about ovarian function in buffaloes. Similarly, palpation per rectum does not provide reliable diagnosis since the CL is frequently embedded deep in the ovarian stroma of buffalo ovary and findings vary due to its subjective nature. Furthermore, measurement of hormones requires sophisticated laboratory procedures/ instruments for making a correct diagnosis. Therefore, real time ultrasonic examination is a better alternative to ascertain reproductive status of buffaloes and for devising suitable strategies to optimize fertility of this species (Sharma, 2003). However, it is important to mention that information gained from ultrasound must be used in conjunction with reproductive history of the animal, palpation of genital tract, and other diagnostic procedures rather than in isolation.

Ultrasonography has an importance place in human practice and veterinary f ield especially in canine practice. Since many years two dimensional ultrasound has been used for scanning purposes both in human and animal practice. But the scenario has changed in human practice with development of three dimensional technology and later four dimensional ultrasonography has developed which shows movements of the objects being scanned especially in the case of fetuses. Nowadays it has been common to use these advanced technology in the human practices. Yet these technologies are in the childhood stage in the veterinary field. High cost of 3D/4D ultrasound equipment, operational difficulties in non sedated animals & lack of specific knowledge about the operation of volume scanning hinder the use of this technology in the veterinary field. Better understanding of the different application of these technologies can be made to use in research areas for the better understanding of the abnormalities, post therapeutics as well in the diagnosis of the diseases

Principle of Three Dimensional and Four Dimensional Ultrasonography

Sound waves of frequency higher than human audible frequency usually ranges from 2-13 MHz are used in ultrasonography. Depending upon on depth of tissue from the scanning surfaces frequency is selected. Three dimensional ultrasonography gives three dimensional images of the volume being scanned .it works on the same principle of 2D ultrasonography but ultrasonographic beams are sent different angles to get three dimensional image of object being scanned. Volume information is obtained either directly using 2D array probe or by reconstructing three dimensional volume from a series of continuous or non- continuous 2D images by using software (Fenster and Downey, 2000). An advancement of 3D technology is 4D ultrasound. Four dimensional ultrasound adds the fourth dimension as time and gives a dynamic real-time 3Dultrasonography of the concerned organ with a continuous volume image acquisitioned rendering process. (Khurana and Dahiya, 2004).

The ultrasonography is based on echo-principal i.e. reflection of sound waves. The ultrasound waves, commonly termed as ultrasound beam is generated from the pizzo-electric crystals, under electric stimulation. The sound beam travels and strike to the organs/tissues on its way and get either reflected or reabsorbed by these structures. The reflected beam is received back by the transducer, which are processed and displayed on the monitor of ultrasound scanner. The display of signal is in form of shades of grey scale i.e. from bright to black picture. If these sound beams strike to organ such as bone, then major part of the beam is reflected and it appears bright (white) on screen. If the sound waves strike to fluid, these get absorbed and are not reflected back, therefore, the image of fluid appears as black on the screen. Other organs appear in between black and bright white. In fact, the reflected sound beam is not proportionate to frequency and velocity of emitted ultrasound beam. The strength of ultrasound beam (grey scale) or brightness of the image depends upon the acoustic impedance of organ or tissue. In simple term acoustic impedance is the capacity of tissue or organ to reflect or absorb these sound beams that again depends upon density or composition of these structures. The reflection of sound beams also depends upon, the angle at which the ultrasound beam strikes the structure on its way. The distance of the organ from the transducer also affects image brightness.

Ultrasonography in goat is becoming popular in the field of reproduction and replacing the other old-age techniques, viz. abdominal ballotment, recto- abdominal probes, X-rays and radioimmuno-assays. The reasons are numerous such as unsatisfactory results, hazardous effects to animal, operator or environment, high cost, long delay in diagnostic results and requirement of sophisticated labs. The ultrasound system has low operating cost and does not need special labs as it can be done at farm itself. Ultrasonography is considered safe to the animal and the operator and provides quick and reliable results. The popular opinion about ultrasonography is that it is noninvasive imaging system and is rapid, safe and practical means of diagnosis of pregnancy and reproductive disorders in sheep and goat. The B-mode real time ultrasonographic system particularly portable system is popular among researcher and practitioners. In goat, B-mode real time ultrasonography was used in 1971, using 5 MHz frequency transducer. A transducer of switchable frequency from 7.5 to 5.0 is more popular in small ruminant research and practice.

Introduction

Acute lung injury (ALI) is the manifestation of an inflammatory response of lung resulting from severe sepsis, bacterial or viral pneumonia, trauma, and burns in animals (Ali et al., 2020).It is distinguwashed by disruption to the alveolar capillary membranes, atelectasis of the pulmonary airspaces, and neutrophil and protein-rich fluid infiltration into the alveolar space (Li et al., 2019). Although advances in treatment, the disability and fatality rates of ALI remain high, that is around 30-40% (Ali et al., 2020). At the moment, new therapeutic alternatives are urgently required to treat ALI. As a result, this is a very active area of research to understand the molecular principles underlying pulmonary inflammation and ALI (Reiss et al., 2012). The use of animal models of inflammatory lung has allowed for the probing of pathways of inflammation responsible for injury. Specially, rodent models may serve a link between in vitro research to large animals and clinical studies by allowing for high quantities of samples under physiological circumstances at low expenses (Domscheit et al., 2020).LPS, found in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, consists of a polar lipid head group (lipid A) and a chain of repeating disaccharides (Gao et al., 2023). LPS induced lung injury model, closely mimic sepsis and inflammatory lung diseases, is a well-establwashed model in this field of research (Reiss et al., 2012). To mimic acute lung injury, LPS can be administered either directly through intratracheal or intranasal route (direct pulmonary insult) or indirectly through intraperitoneally and intravenous routes (indirect extra pulmonary insult) (Perl et al., 2011). This chapter focuses mostly on rodent model of acute lung injury caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), both direct and indirect. Additionally, it also includes the characteristics and underlying molecular mechanism of LPS induced lung injury along with applications in drug development.

Introduction

The immense use of chemicals and pharmacological entities has put the public health at brisk of potential health hazards. These substances in modern days are presented in the form of common constituents of food, medicines, beverages and junk foods etc. However, long term consumption of these substances might be responsible for chronic toxicity, but the accidental ingestion of large quantities of these substances may result into adverse acute toxic reactions. Hence an experimenter should have the acumen to develop and perform the acute toxic tests in order to find out the lethal dose 50 i.e. LD50 of the substances.

Acute Toxicity Studies

Acute toxicity studies helps to establish the dose dependent adverse effect including mortalities. The LD50 has been used as a major parameter in screening of pharmacological agents for acute toxic potential. Apart from mortality, other biological effects and the time of onset, duration and degree of recovery on survived animals, are also important in evaluation of acute toxicity. Hence, acute toxicity study solely gives information about LD50, therapeutic index and the degree of safety of a pharmacological agent.

Acute toxicity is defined as adverse effects occur following oral or dermal administration of a single dose of a substance, or multiple doses given within 24 hours, or an inhalation exposure of 4 hours. Oral administration is the most common form of acute systemic toxicity testing.

Insects development

Once an insect hatches from the egg it is usually able to survive on its own, but it is small, wingless, and sexually immature. Its primary role in life is to eat and grow. If it survives, it will periodically outgrow and replace its exoskeleton (a process known as molting). In many species, there are other physical changes that also occur as the insect gets older (growth of wings and development of external genitalia, for example). Collectively, all changes that involve growth, molting, and maturation are known as morphogenesis.

Metamorphosis

• Metamorphosis actually means change in form Metamorphosis is derived from Greek word ‘Meta’ = Change, ‘morph’ = form or structure.

• The changes in the development from egg to adult, collectively called Metamorphosis (life cycle).

• Post-embryonic changes in form are collectively called as metamorphosis.

• Metamorphosis refers to the way that insects develop, grow, and change form. Metamorphosis include three developmental processes namely growth, differentiation and reproduction which takes place in larval, pupal and adult stages, respectively.

• Majority of insects pass through profound metamorphosis. The growth of an immature insect is accompanied by a series of molts or ecdysis, in which the cuticle is shed off and renewed. The number of molts varies in most insects from 4-8. However some undergo as many as 20 or more molts. A few insects like Bristle tail silver fish (apterygota) may continue molting even after reaching the adult stage. But most of the insects neither molt nor increase in size once then adult stage is reached. The intervals between the ecdysis are called Stadia. The term instar is applied to form of an insect during stadium. In numbering the instar, the form assumed by the insect between hatching from the egg and the first post embryonic molt is termed “First Instar”.

• Such a model can be based on statistics applied to a set of experimental data or on physical laws (Guyot, 1997).e.g. Irrigation is able to satisfy a crop’s water needs provided its management relies on the measurement or estimation of evapotranspiration. The manager can either invest in equipment to monitor changes in water content in the soil or fluxes of water into the plant or the atmosphere, or rely on a ‘‘schematic representation of the system’’, i.e. a model.

• In very simple terms we can define a crop model as “a well-thought out plan of activities to grow the desired crop to get maximum possible yields of high-quality produce with the given resources. It can be a mental or a written exercise (a “schematic representation of the system”) that a farmer or a farm manager prepares for a crop or for an individual crop”.

• In other words, we can also say that a model is “an attempt to describe a certain process or system through the use of a simplified representation, preferably a quantitative mathematical expression, that focuses on a relatively a few key variables that control the process or system”.

• It is clear that in finalizing a crop model we have to assume some mean or standard values (based on the past record, experience, expert judgment, etc.) of the variables which we may not be taking explicitly in our model.

• Successful horticultural production is not possible without sufficient moisture regimes and for that, the appropriate techniques should be adopted.

• In the total cultivated land of India, 75 % of land contributed as a rainfed area or dry land area in which 60% with semi-arid and 19.3 % of area with arid zone.

• The irrigation facilities are covered only 38 % of the total cultivated land of the country.

• The moisture is always the limiting factor in arid area.

• So, conservation of soil moisture or water management is the most important task for arid fruit production.

• Out of total cultivated area of Horticultural production, l lakh ha is under arid or semi-arid.

• In arid area, some fruit crops with specials features are adapted for their production. So, in this area, the soil moisture conservation or the water harvesting techniques is the prime important tools for crop production with best management systems.

Increasing pressures exerted on the environment by humans make protection of natural areas crucial for the preservation of biological diversity. Protected areas are one of the most effective tools available for conservation of biodiversity.

The IUCN defines a Protected Area as ‘an area of land and/or sea specially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultured resources, and managed through legal or other effective means.

Since 1986, the IUCN commission on National Parks and Protected Areas (CNPPA) has been promoting the establishment and management of a global representative system of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) which play a critical role in the conservation of biodiversity. MPAs are growing in importance globally as practical and potentially effective options for the management of fisheries, the protection of biodiversity and the generation of income from eco-tourism. The effective management of MPAs to ensure that they meet their declared objectives poses many challenges.

The IUCN has defined an Marine Protected Area (MPA) as ‘Any area of the intertidal or subtidal terrain, together with its overlying water and associated flora, fauna, historical and cultural features, which has been reserved by law or other effective means to protect part or all the enclosed environment (Kelleher,1999).

INTRODUCTION

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations defines aquaculture as the cultivation of aquatic organisms such as fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants by individuals or corporations. In aquaculture, interventions are made in the rearing process to enhance production. While aquaculture is a practice with origins dating back more than 3000 years, Aquaculture products have only recently been recognized by the United Nations Statistical Commission as distinct global commodities, despite the practice having origins dating back more than 3000 years. According to the FAO's "Global Aquaculture Production" database, the annual global production of aquaculture has increased at an average rate of around 8% over the past three decades (since 1980). Despite a recent slowing in global trends, growth remains higher than any other major animal food production sector. This rapid global increase in production is occurring alongside a slow decline in marine fisheries catches. There is a growing global focus, largely driven by demand from Western countries, on increasing the intensive production of omnivorous and carnivorous species farmed and harvested in maritime and brackish coastal environments, a practice known as mariculture. The farming of these species, such as salmon, groupers, seabasses, and prawns, typically relies heavily on inputs such as wild post-larvae and juveniles, fishmeal, fish oils, as well as significant amounts of water, land, and energy. As a result, mariculture has faced widespread criticism due to its often negative impacts on marine and coastal ecosystem health. Negative associations have been drawn between mariculture and its effects on marine capture fisheries and food security.

INTRODUCTION

The genus Pallisentis was erected by Van Cleave, 1928 with P. umbellatus as its type species. MATERIALS AND METHODS

The fish hosts were collected from the study area and brought to the laboratory for parasitic examination. The external body surface as well as the internal body organs were thoroughly examined for the parasites. The collected acanthocephalan parasites were washed and relaxed in normal saline. Then the specimen was fixed and preserved in AFA (alcohol-formalin-acetic acid) solution. To facilitate identification of the worms the parasites were cleared in lactophenol and mounted in glycerine jelly. Diagrams were made with the help of camera lucida and measurements were taken with ocular micrometer. All the measurements are in millimetres. The collected parasites were identified following Yamaguti (1963) and Bhattacharya (2007).

INTRODUCTION

In nature water is considered as the most important natural resource which is utilized in large quantity throughout the world for drinking, washing, bathing, recreation, irrigation, aquaculture and many industries. Water also plays a fundamental role in regulation of water cycle in nature. India is a agriculture based country totally based on different water sources. The quality of water plays a important role to mankind because it is directly linked with human health. Lake water’s are mainly used for farming and domestic activities like cloth washing. Increasing human activities continuously in lake basins is posing a great threat to all forms of life in aquatic environment. Most of the people who live in villages use irrigation facilities for farms and use excessive use fertilizers and pesticides for agriculture purposes and subsequently and degrade the aquatic ecosystems of lakes. We need to conserve water for future generations and safeguard our natural resources for sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.

Many researchers investigated the freshwater lakes and ponds in the Indian subcontinent viz. Bagde and Verma (1985), Desai (2014), Patel and Patel (2012), Nirbhavanae and Khobragade (2017), Mehta et al (2016), Gupta (2018), Bastola (2013), Raj and Sevankodiyane (2018), Rana Phul Kunwar Singh (2016), Shyamala and Hemvathy (2018), Meshram et al (2014), Fule and Nimgare (2018), Chaudhary and Sitre (2020), Pimpalshende and Sitre (2021).

INTRODUCTION

India is rich in biodiversity and possesses about 108276 species of insects. Indian subcontinent is one of the mega biodiversity countries of the world occupying ninth position in terms of freshwater mega biodiversity (Mittermeier et al., 1997) comprising 30 order (Dijkstra et al. 2013). Inland wetlands of India serve as the habitat for more than 500 species of aquatic insects which are represented predominantly by Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Odonata (dragonflies) and Trichoptera (caddisflies), (Subramanian and Sivaramakrishnan, 2007). Aquatic insects play important ecological roles in keeping freshwater ecosystems functioning properly (Choudhary and Janak, 2015). The aquatic insects are important part of aquatic ecosystem which play vital role in ecosystem functioning and are known to be representative of structure and function of freshwater ecosystem due to their high abundance, high birthrate with short generation time, large and rapid colonization (Choudhary and Ahi 2015). Aquatic insect function on multiple trophic level such as shredders, collectors, scraper and predators on animal debris, wood and leaf litter reaching the wetland from the surrounding landscape. Nutrients processed by aquatic insects are further degraded into absorbable form by fungal and bacterial action. Plants in the riparian zone absorb this nutrient soup transported through the wetlands. In addition to this significant ecosystem function, aquatic insects are also a primary source of food for fishes and amphibians (Tachet et al., 2003 ; Kumar, 2014).They interact in nutrient cycling within lentic and lotic systems and are regarded as an effective bioindicator (Lundquist and Zhu 2018) and serve as an important component of natural foodweb in aquatic ecosystem. However, the aquatic insect fauna of this part in India is inadequately documented. Therefore, present study carried out to delineate the baseline status of aquatic insects of Anandwan lakes at Warora Dist: Chandrapur.

Acaricides: Acaricides are agents that kill members of class Arachnida like ticks and mites.

Acaricides are used both in medicine and agriculture, although the desired selective toxicity differs between the two fields.

What is acaricide resistance?

The ability of a parasite strain to survive and/or to multiply despite the administration and absorption of a drug given in doses equal to or higher than those usually recommended but within the limits of tolerance of the subject.

How does resistance develop?

• Animals are treated with the chemical (Acaricide), exposing nearly all of the tick population to the toxin.

• Susceptible individuals are killed, and those rare individuals that have some genetic resistance, survive.

• They reproduce, and pass along those “resistance genes” to the general tick population.

For instance, the extraction of small ectoparasites such as lice, fleas, and wingless keds typically employs usage of forceps with pointed tips for precision. In poultry, a method of brushing against the grain of feathers enables dislodgement of ectoparasites, which are then collected on a black surface for examination. A highly effective strategy for harvesting ectoparasites from small or deceased hosts, such as poultry, involves sealing the carcasses within a polyethylene bag. This confinement prompts ectoparasites to detach from the host and accumulate within the bag, facilitating subsequent collection using a brush. The retrieval of ticks to prevent the rupture of their mouthparts is achieved by straightening the tick forward and pulling backwards before extraction. These ticks are further placed in a tube sealed with a ventilated stopper or a gauze covered with cotton wool plug. The tubes ought to include paper for the ticks to cling onto, along with a labelled piece of paper. These tubes are stored in a cool and humid container for transportation to the laboratory. India boasts one of the world's biggest and most intricate agricultural research programs in terms of structure. The Imperial (now Indian) Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) was established in 1929 on the advice of a Royal Commission on Agriculture, marking the culmination of a process that began in the 19th century and led to the creation of the current Indian agricultural research system [1].

The importance of subsidies lies in their ability to offset market failures and externalities, leading to greater economic efficiency. By providing financial aid, subsidies can stimulate production, increase supply, lower prices for consumers, and drive economic growth in targeted sectors. They play a crucial role in stabilizing economies, responding to economic shocks, and promoting long-term economic stability. India has a unique social and cultural setting with diverse people, culture and religions. It is one of the oldest and greatest civilizations of the world. Geographically India extends snow clad Himalayan mountains in the north to the tropical rain forests of the south. It is the 7th largest country in the world and well recognised in Asia by its mountains, seas, deserts, and vast stretch of fertile plain land, which give the country a distinct geographical identity.

India has a very rich, diverse religious and cultural heritage. The four main religions of India are - Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Sikhism. Hinduism is the largest religion in India, with approximately 80% of the population is Hindu while Islam (Muslim) is the second-largest religion having 14% (approx.) share.

Religion in India is characterised by the diversity of religious beliefs and practices. In Indian history, religion has been an important part of the country's culture. Indian subcontinent is the birthplace of four of the world's major religions, namely, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism, which are collectively known as native Indian religions and represent 83% of the total population of India approximately.

Hinduism

Hinduism is the main Indian religion. It is considered as a religious and universal order, a way of life which followed by the people who believed in Hinduism. The word ‘Hindu’ refers group of particular people who believes and follow Hinduism, the oldest religion in the world. It has also been described as ‘Sanatana dharma’.

Pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] is one of the most importanttropical fruit belonging to the family Bromeliaceae and is native to Brazil. It is cultivated in High rainfall and humid coastal regions of peninsular India and Hilly areas of North eastern states. In India, pineapple is commercially cultivated in the states like West Bengal, Assam, Karnataka, Bihar, Tripura, Kerala, Nagaland, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya on large scale whereas on small scale in the states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh etc. It is popularly known as ‘Ananas’ in India and has lot of health benefits due to the presence of a proteolytic enzyme called bromelin, which is used to tenderize meat (Coppensd’ Eeckenbrugge, 2011). It acts as antiamoebic, arbortifacient and also used in correction of stomach disorders (Leal and Coppensd’ Eeckenbrugge, 1996). It is consumed both fresh and processed but mostly as fresh (70%) (Loeillet, 1997). Portuguese are the first people to introduce pineapple to India. The greenhouse cultivation of pineapple was first started in 1500s by Europeans, which led to the varieties like Smooth Cayenne and Queen and transported to all tropical and subtropical regions of the world (Collins, 1951). Due to its ease in transport of its propagules and high tolerance to drought, pineapple cultivation has spread worldwide. But due to its short shelf life, in temperate regions it is consumed more as processed food. The first commercial product made out of pineapple is jams and sweets (Thevet, 1957).

Pineapple is a monocarpic perennial herb. Each stem flowers only once and dies after fruiting, similar to bananas, before a side shoot takes over. After the pineapple plant reaches a certain size, natural inflorescence initiation (flowering) occurs in response to decreasing day length and temperature (Bartholomew, 2003). Flowering of Smooth Cayenne pineapples grown under an 8-hour day length was encouraged by a night temperature of 20°C, whereas f lowering was delayed by temperatures of 15 and 20°C, and totally inhibited by 30°C.Flower initiation usually starts in November and lasts through the winter. Flowering in nature is highly irregular, and some plants can fail to produce fruit. Thus, growth regulators such as ethylene (25-50 ppm) and NAA (25 ppm) are used in industrial practise to force plants to bloom. The numerous radish-purple sessile flowers are spirally arranged on the axis, each with a pointed bract. To explain the emergence of developing inflorescence, this stage is also known as the red bud stage. The spike-like inflorescence contains 100 to 200 florets. The petals are white at the base and bluish-purple above the calyx at anthesis. They are ligulae form in shape, about 1.6 cm long and 5 mm wide, and are about 1.6 cm long and 5 mm wide (Collins, 1960).The outer f lower petals are very close together, allowing only small insects to reach the f lower; they have 14 to 20 locules, resulting in a capacity of 6000 to 7000 seeds per 150 floret fruit. After pollination, fruits with 2000 to 3000 seeds are not uncommon (Collins, 1960).

Successful cultivation of a crop is governed by various factors including the edaphic and climatic conditions of the region, owing to which the crop responds in terms of quality and productivity. Pineapple (Ananas comosus L. Merr.) is one of the major crops cultivated across the tropical and sub tropical countries worldwide. Adaptability of the crop under different climatic conditions, topography, temperature, photo-periodicity, rainfall and edaphic conditions will be discussed in this chapter.

Climatic zone: Pineapple is a tropical fruit crop though it can thrive well in the sub-tropical condition as well.Pineapple grows well inwarm and humid climate ranging from mild coastal climate up to an altitude of about 1000 meters, provided the area is free from frost (Singh, 2014).Pineapple is commercially grown over a wide range of latitudes from 30° N (Assam, India) in the northern hemisphere to 33°S in the Southern hemisphere (South Africa) (Malezieux et al., 2003; Purseglove, 1972).

Topography: Pineapples are easy to cultivatesince they thrive naturally in a variety of places with different elevation, especially in tropical countries (Kaudo, 2014). Though the plant survives at different altitude, the fruit quality and size may alter at different elevation. When pineapple is grown at altitudes greater than 1000 m, smaller fruits with elevated tartness with less attractive pulp colour (Purseglove, 1968).Moreover, fruit flavour can also vary, wherein the fruit tends to bemore acidic and sour when cultivated above 1800 meters, but will be sweet and tasty under 1350 meters (Kaudo, 2014).

Temperature: On an average, the temperatures required for growing pineapples range within 18-30°C (Kaudo, 2014) andmore specifically at 23 - 24 ° C (Neild and Boshell, 1976; Py et al., 1987). The optimum day and night temperatures for pineapple were reported to be about 30°C and 20 °C, respectively (Neild and Boshell, 1976). Bartholomew and Kadzimin (1977), however have reported that leaves and roots grow best at 32°C and 29°C respectively and the growth practically ceases below 20°C and above 36°C. Py and Tisuucau (1965) have observed 25°C to be optimal for fruit ripening.

Horticultural sector, which is contributing significantly for food and nutrition security, employment opportunity and poverty alleviation, got a real boost only in the early 1990s which coincided with liberalization of Indian economy. National area and production of horticultural crops are showing increasing trend over the years and production of horticultural crops has outpaced the production of food grain since 2012-13(Press Information Bureau, Govt. of India, Ministry of Finance, 2016). According to Economic Survey 2015-16, the share of horticultural output in agriculture is more than 33% over last decade and the sector contributes 30.4% to GDP of Agricultural sector. Horticulture sector accounts for 37% of total export of agricultural commodities at present and the exports have recorded sustained rising trend (Jha et al., 2019). The export status of APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) products in the recent years shows 28.18% growth in value of horticultural products over the previous year. The investment in horticultural sector with focused attention has resulted in spectacular change in the horticultural scenario and production and productivity of horticultural crops.

As a result, at the initial stage, assessing the animal aids in making a confirmation diagnosis. Given its significance, an assessment of the animal must be performed or obtained before concluding the laboratory finding, if available. Assessment can be conducted in several steps, each of which is detailed in the next paragraph. The physiological vital parameters of animals are crucial reference points to conclude the evaluation findings.

Certain medication poisonings can be identified due to patient individuality and eccentricities. As a result, there are many cases of these poisonings. This chapter discusses the poisoning caused by frequently and carelessly used veterinary medications, such as the toxicity of antibiotics and antibacterials, the toxicity of antiparasitic drugs, the toxicology of analgesics, the toxicity of cough treatments, the toxicity of the digestive system, the toxicity of vitamins, and the toxicity of topical preparations.

It has been determined that a number of plant species are poisonous to animals. These plants not only posed a health risk to humans and animals, but they also significantly reduced cattle productivity. Many plants contain chemicals that can be dangerous or even lethal to animals. The degree of toxicity varies based on the animal species, the quantity of plant material ingested, and the particular poisonous compounds in question. In general, there are two categories of dangerous plants: those that are known to be toxic and contain toxic compounds, and those that are normally non-toxic but can turn hazardous in certain circumstances. Here are some typical plant toxicities, along with information on managing toxicity and clinical signs.

Packaging is an essential tool to make products stand out from the competition. Beyond the shelf appeal, packaging also provides protection to the contents from physical, chemical and microbiological hazards. However, a lesser known fact is that the same packaging material could also be a source of chemical contaminants, and hence, may impact food safety as well as food quality. Among the different components of packaging material, packaging inks play a critical role as they might hamper product and consumer safety.

Each packaging ink is a mixture of different chemicals and some of these chemicals might be harmful with the potential to migrate to the foodstuff. In terms of risk, the chemicals could be toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, repro-toxic and even endocrine disruptors. The chemical contaminants from the packaging inks can get transferred to the foodstuff by a process called migration.

Over the last two decades, a number of scientific papers have been published, revealing the migration potential of substances from the printed matter. However, the first big scandal that brought the subject alive was about the f indings of isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX, a low molecular photo initiator used in UV inks) in baby milk and other liquid foodstuffs all over Europe, resulting in a product recall in the year 2005. The food scandal alerted the packaging chain about the linkage between packaging inks and food safety. Consequently, the authorities issued strict regulations for the application of printing inks as well as general food control measures.

The village of Khan Saheber Abad is located in the Sagar subdivision of South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, India. It is situated 4.8 km away from the sub-district headquarter Rudranagar (the tehsildar office) and 99.6 km away from the district headquarter Alipore. A training programme was conducted for the empowerment of rural tribal communities through sustainable inland fisheries development and utilisation of open water bodies in the village.

Challenges and opportunities

The Khan Saheber Abad is primarily a tribal dominated village. These Tribal people belong to the Santhal community. They have a low level of literacy, declining or stagnant population, and are economically weak, but they are very close to nature.

The demand for nutrients is rising, along with the population, which is rapidly expanding. The sustainability of life on earth now places a high focus on protecting the sources of sustenance. In this regard, aquaculture has a crucial role to play. The regulated raising of fish and other breeds in a particular environment is known as aquaculture. The natural resources and other elements required for sustainable development can be preserved using this method. The promotion of the value of nutrients and the expansion of employment prospects in the future are both made possible by aquaculture. Biofloc fish farming, which has set trends in fish farming all over India, facilitates recycling and reusing of the nutrients in the culture medium by filtering the unwanted substances and metabolites and converting them into nutrients, which benefits the zero exchange of water.

It is clear that Odisha has significant potential for aquaculture due to its vast brackish water resources. However, as the aquaculture industry grows, it is important for farmers to be knowledgeable about the inputs and techniques they use to ensure the sustainability of the industry. A total of 2.98 lakh ha of estuaries, 0.081 lakh ha of backwater, 0.80 lakh ha of Chilika Lake, and 0.32 lakh ha of cultivable brackish water area make up the 4.18 lakh ha potential brackish water area for fish and shrimp production. Additionally, proper disease diagnosis and management are crucial for reducing the risk of disease outbreaks and ensuring the health of the aquatic animals being farmed. With appropriate training and support from organisations such as the Aqua One Centre, farmers can improve their practices and increase their yields, while also contributing to the economic growth of the region.

What is dispersion?

In statistics, dispersion (also called variability, scatter, or spread) is the extent to which a distribution is stretched or squeezed. Common examples of measures of statistical dispersion are the variance, standard deviation, and interquartile range. For instance, when the variance of data in a set is large, the data is widely scattered. On the other hand, when the variance is small, the data in the set is clustered.

Dispersion is contrasted with location or central tendency, and together they are the most used properties of distributions.

The range is defined as the difference between the largest and smallest observations. Range(X)= Max(X)- Min (X)

Example

The range in statistics for a given data set is the difference between the highest and lowest values. For example, if the given data set is {2,5,8,10,3}, then the range will be 10 – 2 = 8. Thus, the range could also be defined as the difference between the highest observation and lowest observation.

We can categorize statistical theory into two general parts.

1. Firstly, there is descriptive statistics which uses the appropriate tools, typically tables, diagrams and/or numerical measures, to describe a data set and provide a summary of its distribution.

2. In addition, there is inferential statistics which is concerned with drawing conclusions about a population using information obtained from a representative sample selected from it.

(a) One aspect of statistical inference is the estimation of a population parameter by the appropriate sample statistic (e.g. the population mean by the sample mean).

(b) The second aspect of inferential statistics is hypothesis testing. In this case, we examine a hypothesis, framed in terms of the parameters in one or more populations.

Estimation is concerned with description whereas hypothesis testing is ultimately concerned with decision.

Basic concepts of hypothesis testing

Hypothesis testing is a process that is concerned with making conclusions about the population using the information obtained from its sample.

• In statistics, best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) is used in linear mixed models for the estimation of random effects. BLUP was derived by Charles Roy Henderson in 1950 but the term “best linear unbiased predictor” (or “prediction”) seems not to have been used until 1962 (Henderson, 1975, 1985).

• “Best linear unbiased predictions” (BLUPs) of random effects are similar to best linear unbiased estimates (BLUEs) of fixed effects. The distinction arises because it is conventional to talk not about estimating fixed effects but rather about predicting random effects, but the two terms are otherwise equivalent.

BLUE and BLUP are both acronyms used in statistics

• BLUE stands for Best Linear Unbiased Estimates and refers to the solutions (or estimates) associated with the fixed effects of a model.

• BLUP stands for Best Linear Unbiased Predictions and refers to the solutions (but identified as predictions) associated with the random effects of a model.

Modern-day agriculture and civilization together demand increased production of food to feed the global population. New technologies and solutions are being applied in the agricultural domain to provide an optimal alternative to gathering and processing information while enhancing net productivity. At the same time, the alarming climate change and increasing water crisis demand new and improved methodologies for modern-age agricultural and farming f ields. Automation and intelligent decision-making are also becoming more important to accomplish this mission in flower production. In this regard, the Internet of Things (IoT) ubiquitous computing, wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks, radio frequency identifier, cloud computing, remote sensing, etc. technologies are becoming increasingly popular.

Most of the IoT-based applications are targeted for various applications. For example, IoT for environmental condition monitoring with information on soil nutrients are applied to predict crop health and production quality over time. Irrigation scheduling is predicted with IoTs by monitoring the soil moisture and weather conditions. The world’s first IoT device was invented in the early 1980s at Carnegie Melon University.

Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton) belongs to the Ericaceae family and is native to North America. Cranberries are also known by various other names, including American cranberry, bearberry, and lingonberry. The plant has a diploid chromosome number of 24 and grows in acidic, nutrient-poor soils in wetlands and bogs. It is an important commercial crop worldwide due to its high nutritional value, antioxidant properties, and health benefits. Cranberries are primarily consumed as juice, dried fruit, or in the form of sauces and jellies. They are a rich source of vitamins C and E, dietary fiber, anthocyanins and essential minerals such as potassium, manganese, and copper. The fruit is also used in the pharmaceutical industries due to its anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti aging properties (Santos et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2017).

The composition of cranberries is quite remarkable, with high levels of antioxidants, including phenolic compounds such as flavonols, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins. These compounds are responsible for the fruit’s vibrant red color and are thought to provide many of the health benefits associated with cranberries. Cranberries are an important crop in the United States, Canada, and Chile, with significant economic value. They are primarily consumed as juice or in processed forms, such as sauces and jams. Cranberries are also used in the production of dietary supplements and cosmetics.

This led to an extended debate and international co-operation in the recognition of plant-related intellectual property rights, resulting in a greater attention being paid to questions of ownership of genetic resources. At the same time concerns for sustainable use of biological diversity were also raised.

One of the major events was the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) which came into force in 1993, which was adopted during the Rio Earth Summit of the United Nations. It was the first legally binding institutional mechanism, providing for conservation and sustainable use of all biological diversity and intends to establish the process of the equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the use of biodiversity.

The CBD was conceived in the 1980s and was negotiated under the leadership of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It was adapted in June 1992 at Rio de Janeiro, at the Earth Summit, and is effective since December 1993.
