INTRODUCTION

In India, medicinal plants have traditionally occupied an important place in the socio-cultural, spiritual and health related aspects of peoples’ life. As much as 34% (ca. 6000) of total plant wealth have some known medicinal value (Ved, 2008). The genus Ephedra is one such important group of medicinal plants, from which the drug Ephedrine and a range of medicinally active compounds such as ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norephedrine, norpseudoephedrine, methyl ephedrine, methyl pseudoephedrine, alkaloids, phenols, terpenoids are obtained. Owing to its medicinal properties, genus Ephedra is in high demand by pharmaceutical industries. It is currently facing heavy extraction pressure from its restricted habitat in the wild, and utterly lacks effective proper conservation and management efforts. For long-term conservation management of this genus, a better and comprehensive understanding of the species remains a top priority, for which detailed studies on its biology, habitat ecology, and agro-technology are required.

Veterinary epidemiology is the study of disease within a livestock population, dealing with the investigation (including identification, quantification, and examination), of the direct and indirect determinants of disease distribution in animal populations. Any epidemiological investigation starts with whether there is an animal health problem in a population, which requires data collection on animal, management, economic, and environmental factors. These data are then analyzed descriptively to assess the frequency of disease occurrence. The results are then used to decide whether investigations of causal relationships between disease occurrence and potential risk factors are necessary for the development of control or prevention policies. Once the relationships are understood, necessary interventions for the disease are then planned and their impacts assessed. Hence, the goal of epidemiological investigations is the control and prevention of animal disease problems by integrating the available pieces of evidence into the decision-making process for disease control policy development.

Epidemiology is the study of diseases in a population in its natural setting. In epidemiology, the population is the patient and hence epidemiology is population medicine. All epidemiological studies are field based. In aquatic epidemiology, aquaculture ponds serve as the laboratory. This can be a great advantage over laboratory studies, which cannot be easily extrapolated to field conditions.

Diseases are among the greatest deterrents to the sustained production in aquaculture. Diseases such as Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) in fishes and White Spot Syndrome (WSS) in shrimps have devastated aquaculture with bad impact on productivity and profitability. Various diagnostic and health management tools are being used to devise disease control strategies. It is becoming increasingly difficult to manage pathogens that have become endemic. Epidemiological approaches which have been very successful in human and veterinary medicine are now being increasingly recognised as important weapons that can be used in aquaculture to formulate disease control programmes.

Concept of Cause for a Disease

Cause from an epidemiological perspective is interpreted in quite a wide sense. This is somewhat different to the more traditional view of the role of cause being restricted to etiological agents. An epidemiological definition of a cause of a disease is “an event, condition or characteristic that plays an essential role in producing an occurrence of the disease”. Epidemiologists avoid defining the word cause for any disease outbreak, but prefer to use words such as determinants, exposures and risk factors. Alternatively, they will categorise causes as direct or indirect; necessary or sufficient; and single or multiple rather than defining primary etiology.

Epidemiology

Vanderplank has called epidemiology the science of disease in population. Epidemiology puts its emphasis on population phenomena. The important populations are those of the host, on the one hand, and of the pathogen, on the other. But further, epidemiology is concerned with host-pathogen interactions that lead to disease and crop losses. These interactions are often environmentally dependent. So epidemiology deals with effects of the biotic and abiotic environments. Finally , man has had important effects on hosts, pathogens and the environments, effect that today are increasing in magnitude and scale of importance. Epidemiology therefore also deals with the effects of man on disease and sometimes with the effects of plant disease on mankind. All of this can be symbolized by the disease tetrahedron.

Introduction
The science of epigenomics has emerged as a key area of research across numerous biological disciplines. Epigenomics is the analysis of epigenetic changes occuring across many genes in a cell or entire organism, whereas the concept of epigenetics focuses on processes that regulate how and when certain genes are turned on and turned off. Understanding on the science of epigenetics can be traced back to the early hypothesis proposed by Aristotle to disprove the theory of preformation. Waddington’s initial conceptualization of epigenetics as a “conceptual tool” to integrate genetics and embryology established a foundational framework for subsequent research. Over time, advancements in molecular biology, developmental biology and evolutionary biology have since profoundly expanded and refined our understanding of epigenetics. Waddington further progressed in the 20th century with his introduction of the “Epigenetic Landscape” model (Baedke, 2013), marking a crucial milestone in the evolution of epigenetic theory.
In modern times, epigenetics refers to the study of heritable changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype that do not involve alterations to the underlying DNA sequence. Recent genetic and biochemical research has improved the understanding of various epigenetic regulation by three mechanisms including DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNA regulations. These mechanisms induce changes in chromatin conformation (active-open or repressiveclosed), which influences the gene expression that results in gene activation or gene silencing (Fig.1).
The transition between open and closed chromatin states, along with interactions among various epigenetic mechanisms, is essential to maintain optimal cellular function in diverse cell types, tissues and in response to varying developmental or environmental stimuli (Allis and Jenuwein, 2016).

Bhuva is a small village in north-west Gujarat – India.  My mother was born there. The loving people of Bhuva called me ‘Bhano’ (Sister’s Son / Nephew) and it was my favourite place to go as a child. I have my fondest memories of Bhuva, but could not visit for several decades, until when I was once at the Junagadh Campus of Gujarat Agricultural University, to inaugurate the International Conference on New Developments in Agriculture. Bhuva was not too far and I decided to go there. Soon as I reached, a familiar face, now aged with time, recognized me from a distance and with tears rolling from his old eyes (and mine) he hugged me, calling out “MaroBhano, MaroBhano” (My sister’s son, my sister’s son)! Now in his eighties, it was overwhelming to meet Nanji Ata, who I always remembered being wise, educated and cheerful. He was a relatively progressive farmer with about 6 to 7 acres of land, a few cows and a buffalo. Though water was scarce and saline, he managed to make a good living and was considered a well to do man.

It argues that farmers’ mental models are shaped by a range of factors, including their own experiences and observations, social networks and interactions, access to information and resources, and broader economic and political contexts. The present study has also highlighted the role of uncertainty in shaping farmers’ mental models and decision-making. Uncertainty about the future impacts of climate change can create significant challenges for farmers, as they must make decisions based on incomplete information and uncertain predictions.

The current research work was carried out in the new alluvial zone which is one of the agro-ecological regions in the state of West Bengal. To conduct the study, three villages located in the Haringhata block of Nadia district were chosen randomly. A total of 90 farmers were selected with 30 respondents each from the villages of Kastadanga, JalkarBhomra and Subuddipur. Initially a list of contact farmers was collected from the Kastadanga SKUS and few contact farmers were selected randomly from the list. Afterwards Snowball sampling method was followed to select respondents.

Urban adolescents are faced with downward mobility and endure disappointment in their hopes for professional professions and ‘modern’ lives, whereas rural kids enjoy certain types of upward mobility when they relocate into the metropolis (Brown, T. 2015). It is recognized that the main driving force behind migration is the pursuit of better job prospects, and the extent and direction of migration are predominantly influenced by employment opportunities (Khan, 1983). Furthermore, rural areas in Darjeeling have experienced a noticeable trend of male-selective migration in search of better opportunities in the past few decades. This migration primarily occurs towards urban environments within the district and major cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai, to name a few important destinations. Several factors have contributed significantly to this phenomenon, including population pressure, degradation of common property reSources like forests, long neglect of the region, economic and social backwardness, low agricultural productivity, and lack of opportunities. While this migration brings in much-needed income, it also diminishes the available workforce in the home villages.

To understand the movement of a ocean particle, We have to consider different forces. Introduction

Introduction
With the dynamic change in the pace of human activity and changing life style, the demand for easy-to-prepare drinks is also increasing. Besides being consumed in the household, these drinks are also served in restaurants, clubs, airlines, railways etc. There has been an appreciable increase in the export of processed foods which includes squashes, cordials, and syrups. With the fast pace of growth in the urban sector and the increase in living standards of the Indian people reaching higher levels by the year, there is a good potential to develop this industry in the small-scale sector. To prepare fruits and vegetable juices at commercial level, several equipments are needed. Some of the important equipment required for processing of specific fruit and vegetables are discussed herein.
Pome Fruit and Small Fruit Processing
Generally, most pome fruit (e.g. Apple, Pear, Quince) and small stone fruit (e.g. Plum, Olive, Peach, Cherry) can be used for juice extraction. No peeling is needed. Small stone fruit such as apricots and plums might have to be destoned (pitted) depending on the grinding, extraction equipment selection. Cherries, although containing a pit, may be pressed with the pit intact. Breakage of the pit will release benzaldehyde, the familiar aroma of maraschino- type cherries.

Calibration is the process of measuring and adjusting the amount of pesticide your equipment applies or delivers to a specific area. The purpose of calibration is to ensure your equipment is applying the correct amount of material uniformly over a given area.

Equipment is manufactured to be adjustable. Charts or tables may be provided to assist the operator in making adjustments to the settings. These recommended settings, however, are only approximate and may not be appropriate for all situations. Therefore, your equipment must be calibrated periodically. This depends on the type of equipment and the frequency of use. The application rate of the sprayer is affected by travel speed, nozzle size, and sprayer pressure. Equipment is calibrated by making a trial run on some premeasured area and measuring the output. For example, using a hand-held sprayer, spray a premeasured test area with water using the same pressure and techniques (i.e., travel speed and equipment) you would use when applying the pesticide. After spraying the test area, determine how much water was used. This volume can then be used to calculate the amount of water and pesticide needed to cover the intended application area.

The time invested in calibrating your equipment is time well spent. Accurate calibration to determine the application rate under your operating conditions is important for cost, efficiency and safety.

The production of premium fish feed involves using specialized equipment across various stages—grinding, mixing, conditioning, pelleting or extruding, drying, cooling, and packaging. Each machine contributes to achieving consistency, efficiency, and high-quality standards in aquafeed manufacturing. Equipment selection depends on production scale, feed type (floating or sinking), targeted aquatic species, and financial considerations. • Hammer Mill or Grinder: The grinding phase reduces raw materials into smaller particles using a hammer mill, which operates with rotating hammers to crush substances like grains and oil cakes. The screen size can be changed to control particle fineness, which is important for effective mixing and digestion. • Mixer :Mixers ensure even distribution of ingredients. Two types are common: • Horizontal Mixers: High mixing efficiency and ideal for large volumes. • Vertical Mixers: Cost-effective, better suited to small-scale operations. Micro-ingredient dispensers and dosing units may be attached for accurate inclusion of additives and micronutrients

UV-visible spectroscopy has undoubtedly become an indispensable tool and is routinely used for identification and quantitative estimation of most of the biomolecules. Besides other applications, most of the enzyme assays and the screening of biomolecules recovered in different fractions by separation processes such as column chromatography, density gradient centrifugation etc, rely heavily on spectrophotometer or colorimetric technique.

Chocolate is a product that requires complex procedures to produce. The process involves harvesting coca, refining coca to cocoa beans, and shipping the cocoa beans to the manufacturing factory for cleaning, roasting, grinding , ref ining , conching , moulding and enrobing operations which are accomplished using wide range of machinery. A few have been discussed in this chapter.

1. Bean Roasters

When cocoa beans were first brought to Europe, the method of roasting was quite simple, often consisting of no more than metal trays suspended by chains over a fire, an ancient Middle Eastern technique for roasting coffee. The beans would be stirred by hand with a long stick or paddle until the roast was complete. Needless to day, this was very labor intensive and inefficient. Clearly, something more efficient was needed. The next development in roasting technology was not that far distant from roasters in use today. Metal cylinders or balls that could hold up to several pounds of cocoa beans would be suspended over the embers of a fire. A rod would run through the center and act as an axis upon which the roaster would turn. A hand crank on one end would allow the cylinder or ball to be turned while the beans were roasting. The result was a much more even roast than was before possible. Aspects of this technique remain in many of today’s roasters.

Plant protection equipment, often referred to as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for agricultural or horticultural activities, includes various gear and clothing designed to protect individuals from potential hazards while working with plants, pesticides, or other agricultural materials. These items are crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of workers in the agricultural and horticultural industries. Common types of plant protection equipment:

1. Protective Clothing

Coveralls or suits to shield the body from pesticides, chemicals, and other substances.

Long-sleeved shirts and pants to minimize skin exposure.

Gloves to protect the hands from contact with pesticides, thorns, or other hazards.Safety goggles or face shields to safeguard the eyes.

2. Footwear Sturdy,

closed-toe boots or shoes to protect the feet from potential injuries and exposure to pesticides and plant debris.

Abstract

The present study aims to assess postural and muscular stress among farm women performing weeding and winnowing operations. Postural stress was assessed through postural deviation in spinal curvature, energy expenditure, physical cost of work, cardiac cost of work, pain in different body parts and muscular stress was assessed by percentage decrease in grip strength. Postural deviations were recorded with the help of flexi curve. Heart rate was calculated in 3 phases: before, during and after the work. Energy expenditure, physical cost of work, cardiac cost of work was also calculated. Grip strength of both hands was calculated by grip dynamometer. The mean value of ergonomic parameters were found more in weeding operation which were as follows : -Postural deviation (250), Average heart rate (5.35), energy expenditure (5.70), physical cost of work (3.05), total cardiac cost of work (35.82). After weeding operation farm women perceived very severe pain in lower back, buttocks, and palms, while after winnowing they experienced very severe pain in shoulder, upper back and upper arms.

Abstract

The present paper examines the effect of fodder cutting and uprooting activity on the cardiovascular system of farm women. The research design comprised of field study conducted on 30 farm women. The activity of cutting and uprooting were studied with the traditional tools as well as with the improved tools. Newly designed and developed slashing knife and uprooter were provided to the respondents for performing the activity of cutting and uprooting. The results revealed significant reduction in average working heart rate (2.08** - cutting and 4.99** - uprooting; Significant at 5% level) and peak heart rate (-3.55**- cutting and 1.70**- uprooting; Significant at 5% level).  It was found that there was significant reduction in muscular stress after use of improved tools over the existing tools.

This chapter applies ergonomic principles to hospitals, clinics, laboratories and other healthcare environments. Healthcare personnel encounter demanding physical tasks, emotional pressures, complex decisions and extended working hours. Common risks include patient handling, repetitive movements, prolonged standing, awkward postures, mental overload and poorly designed workstations. The chapter considers physical ergonomics, workflow design, cognitive support and stress management as complementary approaches to improving healthcare delivery. Safe patient-transfer techniques, adjustable furniture, accessible equipment and logically arranged clinical spaces are discussed. By reducing fatigue and occupational injury, ergonomic interventions can improve staff health, job satisfaction, patient safety, clinical accuracy and organizational efficiency while decreasing absenteeism and employee turnover.

Ergonomics, also known as human factors engineering, is a multidisciplinary f ield that focuses on designing and arranging environments, products, and systems to fit the people who use them. The primary goal of ergonomics is to enhance efficiency, safety, and well-being by optimizing the interaction between humans and their work environment.

Physical Ergonomics

Posture : Examining how people sit, stand, and move to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort.

Repetitive Motion: Addressing issues related to tasks that involve repetitive movements, which can lead to strain injuries.

Introduction

Soil is one of the crucial natural resources that support life on the earth and controls the economic conditions of the nation. Soil erosion has become a serious problem in both rainfed and irrigated areas of India thus it of vital importance to raise awareness about soil erosion and their reclamation / management methods, so that future land management decisions can lead to more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. In India almost 130 million hectares of land, i.e., 45 % of total geographical surface area, is affected by serious soil erosion through gorge and gully, shifting cultivation, cultivated wastelands, sandy areas, deserts, and water logging.

In India, the soil is eroded at an average annual rate of 16.35 tonnes per hectare which means 5334 million tonnes per year for the country as a whole. Out of this, about 29 per cent is permanently lost to the sea, while 61% is simply transferred from one place to another, and the remaining 10% is deposited in reservoirs (which mean the storage capacity is reduced by 1-2 per cent annually (Narayana and Ram Babu, 1983)). Singh et al. (1990) estimated that the average annual soil loss is about 15.2 tonnes per hectare and at national level it amounts to about 4978 million tonnes annually. The annual erosion rates vary from region to region. In dense forests covers, snow-clad cold deserts and arid regions of western Rajasthan, the annual erosion rates are less than 5 tonnes per hectare. On the other hand, about 64 per cent of the total soil is contributed by highly to very severely eroded areas, such as the Shiwalik hills (annual rate is more than 80 tonnes per hectare), the Western Ghats, black and red soil regions, ravines and other gully eroded areas and the northeastern region. For the first time, Gurmel Singh prepared map of soil erosion in India (Fig. 7.1), on the basis of iso-erosion lines i.e. line joining the place of same erosion rates.

Ergonomics (also known as Human Engineering, Human Factors or Human Ergology) is the scientific study of relationship between a person and his/her working environment. The term environment includes the tools, materials and method of work, ambient conditions and physical environment in which the work is carried out, and also the organizational factors. Ergonomics application can help in increasing the efficiency and productivity, reducing drudgery and occupational health problems, and enhancing safety of workers in various activities.

Flooding and soil erosion are closely connected because concentrated runoff detaches, transports, and deposits soil material throughout a watershed and river system. Raindrop impact initiates splash erosion, while surface flow produces sheet, rill, and eventually gully erosion. Sediment generated from fields and channels reduces reservoir capacity, raises riverbeds, obstructs drainage, and lowers channel conveyance, thereby increasing flood risk. This chapter explains erosion mechanisms, classifications, influencing factors, gully development, sediment yield, sediment-delivery ratio, suspended and bed loads, and sediment-transport models. It also examines soil-loss estimation and agronomic or structural conservation measures that can reduce erosion, control sediment movement, and improve watershed-level flood management

2.1. Soil erosion

Detachment of soil particles from the surface • Transportation by water, wind, ice or gravity.

Damage to arable land tends to attract most attention but degradation of non-arable land can also have serious effects, whether economic, or social, or on the food supply. In dry seasons, loss of grazing capacity is a common and serious problem, forest land may suffer through over-exploitation, roads can cause much damage particularly on steep land. In this chapter we will look at the more important erosion problems on non-arable land.

13.1 Erosion on grazing land

On well-managed high-yielding pasture it is unlikely that there will be any erosion, for the ground will have a good uniform cover. But land which is not arable because it is too poor, too infertile, too stony, or too arid, and is only described as grazing land because it is unfit for more intensive use, is a very different matter. Again, erosion control can be directly and precisely equated to improved management - anything leading to a better water balance and a better ground cover will lead to reduced erosion.

11.1 The farmer’s point of view

In the last chapter possible conservation practices were reviewed in groups according to their purpose in terms of influencing runoff or soil loss. Now, looking at ways of limiting soil degradation by improved land husbandry, the primary consideration is to look at the alternatives from the farmer’s point of view. In fact we need to be very wary of manual-type recommendations. A better approach is to offer a menu of alternatives, and the role of the professional is to help the farmer choose what is appropriate for his or her circumstances. A recent review of technologies acceptable to resource-poor farmers points out that combining practices into a farming system must take account not only of the physical factors such as soil and climate, but equally the available resource inputs, especially cash and labour, and the farmer’s objectives (STOCKING 1993).

The objectives of a commercial farmer are usually to maximize yield and income, but the subsistence farmer is likely to be more interested in improving food security by reducing the risk of failure, or improving the return on inputs of seed, fertilizer and labour, or improving the quality of life by reducing drudgery, particularly relevant in the case of women farmers.

We need a new approach to the farmer when recommending changes to farming practice. Instead of recommending practices because they will reduce erosion, we should show how they can lead to increased production. For example, practices which lead to better soil structure, more organic matter, or more moisture-holding capacity should be put forward because they improve yield, not because they reduce the soil erodibility. Increasing infiltration from better ground cover or the use of contour farming or ridging can result in better crops as well as reducing soil loss. Improved crop management could include more use of fertilizer and manures or crop rotations. These practices will make more sense to the farmer if they are recommended as leading to better production, which he can instinctively appreciate as desirable, rather than because they will reduce soil erosion which is likely to be a less important objective.

Aquaculture, also known as aqua-farming, embodies the procedure of the farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other organisms. Aquaculture involves cultivation of freshwater and saltwater fish-populations under controlled conditions (Wikipedia, 2019). Aquaculture industry has undergone a lot of change in the last two decades. The application of the sophisticated technologies in the aquaculture industry has greatly altered the face of the industry in special relation to the Western and developed countries. New tools related to the measurement of the different environmental parameters needed to be controlled in different layers of the production process like Hatchery, Nursery and Grow-out have come up. Lots of data generated from the above stages relate to include the parameters, like, cost of production, health condition of produced fish, etc., which ultimately leads to the generation of the appropriate pricing of produce. With the advent of globalization, all aquaculture product companies need to look for exporting their respective products along with meeting the full satisfaction related to the demand from the domestic markets with an ultimate objective to increasing the profit. Export of the fisheries products in the western countries needs proper certification on the quality of the products duly by the appropriate authorities. The certification authorities need to check the detailed production process related to the fisheries- products in order to be sure about the quality imbibed in the same. The development of integrated software maintaining the details of the production process makes the task easy for both the production company and the certification authority, thus satisfying the needs of the end-customers in the western markets. Useful ERP software needs to maintain all relevant information on the production process commencing from the very early stage of the production till the act of selling the products in the market.

5.1 INTRODUCTION

A GIS database without single error is reliable for decision making. There are various possible sources of errors in GIS. If an error is not removed during scanning, the final output will also have that error. Besides whatever the work has been carried on wrongly scanned map it will add to errors because the source map itself's erroneous. This is like garbage in garbage out proverb. If wrong data is taken for analysis it will only result in wrong output. Hence it is important to remove error at every stage of GIS work. It is important to locate the sources of errors so that due care may be taken while handling a project.

5.2 ORIGINAL SOURCES OF ERRORS

All the equipments which give attributed data and spatial data will give errors. Before going to field or before collecting data all the related instruments should be calibrated properly. Also the instrument should not cross the permissible error. Besides these while using data from diversified sources errors pertaining to those instruments are mixed to give a different result. When very good accuracy is desired data should be collected from high end equipments. Even if one adds the data from a comparbly less accurate instrument to the data of many accurate instrument is then the result obtained finally will not reliable enough. Global Positioning System (GPS) is available with mm accuracy to meters accuracy. Also surveying with suitable map projection and datum is important; otherwise the result will be wrong. Survey instruments posses some inaccuracy and when a person is using it he should have the accuracy over the instrumental like rain gauge, water level recorders which give attributed data which should be checked for instrumental inaccuracies and method of data collection before using it. Likewise satellite and aerial sensors miss some data and some error are inherent. Such errors should be removed before moving ahead. Errors are resulted due to map reduction, enlargement, data editing and computation method adopted. At the same mapping instruments also possess inaccuracies. When after certain interval a person is going for survey, the registered object may have been changed. Many new features might have come up. Hence the established control points are changed and if the wrongly placed control points are taken for survey then the result itself will be wrong. If proper resolution is not available in the instruments, then the instruments may not capture the minute details which are required.

The GIS database is a model of real world. It goes without saying that there is an inherent discrepancy between GIS database and the real world it represents. This is so because all models are fraught with cognitive issues and remain as approximations. To realize the objectives of a GIS, geographical data collected, entered and processed are to be sufficiently error free and reliable.

Errors can be statistical errors like mistakes, wrong inputs or faulty field surveys or system errors like excessive tolerances or high RMS error. The spatial database has further problems in the sense that the real world phenomena are not always intrinsically discrete. For instance where is the bank of a shallow river? Where is the boundary between two soil types? These are but a few questions revealing the fuzzy nature of geographic data. Many soil scientists, geographers have noticed that carefully drawn boundaries or iso-lines on maps in general give misrepresentations of change that are often gradual, vague or fuzzy. Traditional cartography as a medium of spatial data handling had a solution to such problems. But now when digital data are handled, they need to be stored with certain precision. Moreover, the spatial variation of natural phenomena is not just a local noise function or inaccuracy that can be removed by collecting more data or by increasing the precision measurement but is often a fundamental aspect of nature that occurs at all scales. (Goodchild, 1980; Mark and Aronson, 1984). This means residual unmapped variation is a remarkable problem in geographical information processing. It is therefore a prerequisite to fully understand how errors arise or propagated in GIS and what might be the effects of errors on output.

The mandate of the University under section 30 of the Act of 1963 is for establishment of Extension services for the purposes of under taking extension programs, dissemination of information for solving of problems relating to agriculture and domestic fields, developing the interests of youth in agriculture etc., The first extension service of APAU popularly known as District Extension Education Programmes were introduced in 1967 in Hyderabad district and were subsequently extended to Chittoor(1968)and Guntur (1970) districts. National Demonstrations Scheme (NDS) was established during 1970-71 in the University in four locations. In commemoration of the Golden Jubilee Year of ICAR, a Lab to Land Programme was launched by the APAU in June,1979. In order to improve the productivity of pulses and oilseeds in different regions of the state, two extension education centres were sanctioned by the ICAR at Ananthapur and Rastakuntubai which started functioning from December,1980 and December,1981 respectively. Reorganization of the University Extension work followed the reorganization of research activities of the APAU and implementation of Training and Visit System by the Department of Agriculture to streamline the setup of the field extension program of the University during 1982. To optimize the utilization of available extension resources, the resourcess of District Extension Education programs, extension services around research stations and NATP were integrated and reorganized to form six Extension Education Units. The extension activities of these units were entrusted with the respective Associate Directors of RARS for integrating research and action activities. The Associate directors of Research in turn were made responsible to the Director of Extension. The Extension Education Units conducted different extension activities like organization of field trials for testing new technologies for their feasibility including minikit trials of pre-released varieties to get feedback to the scientists, introduction of new cropping patterns, demonstration of latest technologies through early demonstrations including educational activities like organization of Kisan Melas training programs for the developmental

Host Range

Outbreaks of significant economic loss are in turkeys. Occasional outbreaks have been reported in pheasants, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, chukars, grebes and emus. Erysipelas also occurs in swine, sheep, sea mammals, fish and many wild animals. In humans (fish handlers, butchers, kitchen workers, turkeygrowers and veterinarians) it causes a localised inflammation called “erysipeloid”.

Natural Habitat
The bactrerium is widespread in nature and has been recovered from a wide variety of wild and domestic animals including mammals, fish (both fresh and salt water), birds, reptiles and amphibians. It is present in the soil and can survive for 20 days or longer in alkaline soil. The major source of infection for swine and turkeys is carrier animals of the same species. It is reported that 30-50% of pigs carry the bacterium in their tonsils, other lymphoid tissues. It is present in slurry of piglets and can be recovered from the faeces of carrier pigs.
Morpholgy
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (previously named Erysipelothrix insidiosa) from S (Smooth) -form colonies and usually from acute syndromes is a grampositive rod, the R (rough) form colonies usually from chronic disease is a gram-positive filament. The organism is non-motile, non-spore forming, nonacid fast, capsulated occur either in singly, in groups or in chains.

Cultural Characters
It is a facultative anarobe, but growth is enhanced by 10% CO2. It is able to grow in a temperature range of 50C to 420C, within a pH range 6.7 to 9.2 and 8% NaCl2. Growth occurs on nutrient agar but is improved by the addition of serum or blood. It will not grow on Mac Conkey agar. Media contain either sodium azide (0.1%) or crystal violet (0.001%) may be used as selective media. On blood agar, non-haemolytic pinpoint colonies (0.5 mm) appear at 24hrs incubation. Colonial variation becomes obvious at 48hrs incubation when azone of greenish haemolysis often develops under and just around the colonies.

It examines metabolite profiling, central carbon metabolism, metabolic pathways, environmental responses, and metabolic flux analysis. The chapter explains how metabolomic data can reveal changes in cellular metabolism and support the identification of pathway bottlenecks and regulatory mechanisms. Introduction
Escherichia coli (commonly abbreviated as E. coli) is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms (endotherms).
Escherichia coli are common inhabitants of the terminal small intestine and large intestine of mammals. They are often the most abundant facultative anaerobes in this environment. They can occasionally be isolated in association with the intestinal tract of non-mammalian animals and insects. The presence of E.coli in the environment is usually considered to reflect faecal contamination and not the ability to replicate freely outside the intestine.
Morphology
E.coli is Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic and non-sporulating. Cells are typically rod-shaped, and are about 2.0 micrometers (μm) long and 0.25- 1.0 μm in diameter, with a cell volume of 0.6–0.7 μm. It can live on a wide variety of substrates. Strains that possess flagella are motile. The flagella have a peritrichous arrangement. It is motile by peritrichous flagellae, though some strains are non-motile.Spores are not formed. Capsules and fimbriae are found in some strains.
Cultural Characteristics
Escherichia coli or E.coli cells may grow on a solid or in a liquid growth medium under a laboratory condition. Solid and liquid media may have exactly the same composition except that the solid medium contains an extra 1.5% agar. Different E.coli clones may have different properties. Colonies growing on solid media represent different clones. It is an aerobe and a facultative anaerobe. Optimal growth of E. coli occurs at 37°C (98.6°F) but some laboratory strains can multiply at temperatures of up to 49°C (120°F).

Plants accumulate elements at different rates, absorbing some in large quantities, others in smaller amounts, and excluding most altogether. Before proceeding, it is important to familiarise with several key terms frequently used in this chapter.

Nutrient: A nutrient element is essential for an organism to complete its life cycle, and a deficiency in this element leads to specific deficiency symptoms. The negative effects can only be corrected by providing that particular element. Nutrient elements essential for plants may not be necessary for other organisms, and vice versa. Depending on availability, the nutrient levels in a plant can be deficient, sufficient, or toxic. A nutrient is considered deficient when its concentration is so low that it significantly limits growth and causes recognisable deficiency symptoms. If nutrient levels cause reduced growth without visible deficiency symptoms, they are termed insufficient. The nutrient content range in plants that supports optimal yield of crops is considered sufficient. When the concentration of a nutrient becomes high enough to significantly reduce growth, it is considered toxic.

Public concern over use of antibiotics in livestock production has increased in recent years because of their possible contribution to emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria, and their transmission from livestock to humans. Accordingly, ruminant microbiologists and nutritionists have been exploring alternative methods of favorably altering ruminal metabolism to improve feed efficiency and animal productivity. Plant extracts contain secondary metabolites, such as essential oils (EO) that have antimicrobial properties that make them potential alternatives to antibiotics to manipulate microbial activity in the rumen. Essential oils are naturally occurring volatile components responsible for giving plants and spices their characteristic essence and color. Over the last few years, a number of studies have examined effects of EO, and their active components, on rumen microbial fermentation. However, many of these studies are laboratory based (i.e., in vitro) and of a short-term nature. Nevertheless, results from in vitro batch culture studies provide evidence that EO and their components have the potential to improve N and/or energy utilization in ruminants. Effects of EO on ruminal N metabolism is more likely mediated by their impact on hyper-ammonia producing (HAP) bacteria resulting in reduced deamination of amino acids (AA) and production of ammonia N.

All higher plants have some kinds of aroma or flavor in their various parts, which includes roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits. This flavor and aroma in a particular plant part due to the presence of some specific essential oils present in special glands in it (Chadha and Choudhury, 1989). Essential oils arethe concentrated liquid, which is highly concentrated and water insoluble liquid (hydrophobic) and it is also known as ethereal or volatile oils, which are fragrant oily liquid that are extracted from the various parts of the plants. Generally they are organic compounds like hydrocarbons likealcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones and phenols. An essential oil is “essential” in case that it contains the essence of the different fragrance, and the properties of the plants from which they are derived. All though all ornamental plants have some aroma but only few of them are used commercially in perfumes, flavor and cosmetic industries. The essential oil demand by fragrance industry is 60%, flavour industry 20% and pharmaceutical industry 20%. In all the perfumes, rose oil is one of the best and costliest perfume. The first recorded reference of rose perfume is in CharakSanghita. The credit for discovery of rose perfume was given to Queen Noor Jehan mentioned in the book written by Md. Achem of King Jahangir’s regime.

The volatile oils showed the different kinds of biological activities including the antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, insecticidal, etc. These oils are also used for cancer treatment, while some other has been used for the food preservations, aromatherapy, and in the perfumery industries. Thus, in the day to day life a large spectrum of usage the essential oil and aroma industry has a bright future. Yet the known applications of essential oilsare opening up ofmore areas which will benefit the industry.

The functional diversity of chemicals within plants is best demonstrated by terpenoids. More than 30,000 terpenoids have been identified, each one composed of 5-carbon (prenyl diphosphate) building blocks added together to make 10-carbon, 15-carbon, and even 2000–500,000-carbon chains, as is the case for rubber. Terpenes are functionally diverse, and many are integral to primary metabolism, e.g., hormones such as gibberellins and abscisic acid, electron carriers such as plastoquinone and ubiquinone, terpene-derived compounds that form structural parts of membranes such as phytosterols, and photosynthetic pigments such as carotenoids.

Plant terpenes are also available as essential oil or ethereal oil. Essential oil is defined as the volatile oil obtained by the steam distillation of plants. There is a distinction between fixed or fatty oils and volatile oils. Their volatility (boiling point) and plant origin are characteristic properties of these oils.
