This chapter introduces the major biological, nutritional, environmental and management factors that determine egg quality. It examines genetic and breed influences, hen age and stage of lay, nutrition and feed composition, housing systems, environmental conditions and heat stress. The effects of disease, medication, handling, on-farm management and storage are also discussed. The chapter emphasizes that egg quality results from interactions among multiple factors rather than from a single intervention. Induced moulting and nutritional management are considered as practical approaches to maintaining quality during the laying cycle.

Fruit is a structure which arises from an ovary or fusion of several ovaries after fertilization and may or may not carry associated floral parts. Fruit formation is an evolutionary mechanism designed to support and dispersal of seed by various agencies.With few exceptions e.g. banana, it is necessary for the flowers to be fertilized to set fruit. Fruit set succeeds the process which involves fusion of male and female gametes inside the ovary and is called fertilization. Fruit setting has long been remained a major problem as is evident from the old Greek literature and wall paintings where male panicles of date palm were being rubbed against the female flowers to get good fruit set.Lack of pollination with compatible source leads to the flowers drop except the flowers which set parthenocarpically. Further if fertilization is affected even then the flower drop and this decision depends upon the internal hormonal levels of the plant and prevailing climatic conditions.On the basis of pollination requirement fruit plants can be autogamous, allogamous or geitonogamous. In case of fruit plants like grape, peach where pollen produced by the same flower affect the fertilization are called autogamous and fruits like apple, kiwi, pistachio necessarily require pollen produced on some other plant or cultivar which are compatible can affect fertilization are called allogamous. Another condition exists where pollen grains from the same plant affect fertilization in flower at different part of the plant e.g. Walnut, pecan nut and is called geitonogamy. Similarly on the basis of compatibility between pollen and stigma, plants can be self unfruitfull, partially self fruitfull and self fruitfull.Self fruitfulness indicates that fruit species or cultivars produce abundant viable pollen grains whose shedding coincides with the receptivity of stigma, pollination is effective and there are no pre and post fertilization barriers. However, partial self fruitfulness and self un-fruitfulness exhibits number of causes. In case of fully self fruitfull types, a solid block of a single cultivar can be raised without making any provision for cross pollination, however it has been reported that provision of cross pollination in autoganmous crops increases the fruit-set. In case of self unfruitful and partially self unfruitful types, provision of cross pollination is necessary to get the fruits. Proper selection of the cultivars is therefore important from the point of fruit yield for which besides overlapping of blossoming season over long periods, the time of maturity, productiveness, market values etc. are of importance. Pollenizer must be a heavy pollen producer to ensure better chances of cross fertilization. Although pollenizers are desirable, their number must be restricted so that these do not become uneconomical because the pollenizer trees occupy space, consume nutrition and take away attention of the fruit grower without any return in yield, which would have otherwise been diverted to the trees capable of bearing fruits. Numerous environmental, edaphic, plant characters affect the fruit set and are discussed as under:

The integration of various farming enterprises—such as crops, livestock, poultry, fishery, horticulture, agroforestry, and others—plays a vital role in strengthening rural livelihoods. However, successful integration depends on
a variety of interrelated factors. The first and foremost is the agro-climatic condition of the area, which includes soil type, rainfall pattern, temperature, humidity, and elevation. These factors determine the suitability of different
enterprises and their possible combinations. For example, fish farming is more viable in water-abundant regions, while goat farming is more appropriate in dry or hilly regions. Landholding size and its layout also greatly influence
enterprise integration. Farmers with larger and well-demarcated plots have more flexibility to integrate different components such as ponds for fish, sheds for livestock, and space for crops or horticulture. On the other hand, marginal and small farmers may find it challenging to accommodate multiple enterprises without careful planning. Similarly, water availability is a key determinant, especially for integrating enterprises like fishery, dairy, and horticulture, which require regular and ample water supply. The presence of water harvesting structures or access to irrigation facilities enhances integration potential.

The prosperity and growth of a nation depends on the status and development of women as they constitute about 50.00 per cent of the human resource of the country. Women play a significant role in agriculture and allied fields. She also performs several management and decision making roles in farming and home making practices with her male counterpart and sometimes alone.(Sreenivasulu and Punna Rao, 2005). Khelkar (1995) found that 64.55 per cent had medium level of farm management followed by high and low 18.18 per cent and 17.27 per cent respectively.

Several environmental conditions affect the density and composition of the microflora and frequently alter their activities in soil. Primary factors include soil moisture, aeration, temperature, pH, organic matter and inorganic fertilizers. Lesser variables are the secondary factors, which include crop rotation, season, soil depth, cultivation practices etc.

I. Primary Factors

Soil moisture

Soil moisture is one of the important factors influencing the microbial population. Water is the major component of protoplasm; an adequate supply must be available for vegetative development of organisms. But, when it becomes excessive, proliferation is suppressed due to limitation in gaseous exchange and lowers the availability of O₂ supply creating an anaerobic environment. Most of the organisms prefer a moisture percentage between 20 and 60 per cent. Many bacteria and fungi can adjust themselves to different moisture conditions. Under dry conditions, the bacteria may form spores that can resist the drought conditions. The fungi may sporulate or form chlamydospores to tide over adverse conditions. The protozoans also may form cysts and can survive under dry conditions. Actinobacteria are the chief group of organisms that prefer dry conditions. It is believed that the concentration of nutrients is diluted and also the aeration is very much limited at moisture and hence only the anaerobic and microaerophilic organisms can develop better.

Factors for deterring the Fertilizer Schedule are two factor

Soil Supplying Power: Growing different crops during different seasons alters the soil nutrient status, estimated by soil analysis at the beginning of the season. The soil supplying power increases with legume in rotation, fertilizer application and addition of crop residues. The available nitrogen and potassium in soil after groundnut are higher to initial status of the soil. But after pearl millet, only potassium status in the soil is improved and no changes in P.

Nutrient Uptake by Crops: The total amount of nutrients taken by the crops in one sequence gives an indication of the fertilizer requirement of the system. The balance is obtained by subtracting the fertilizer applied to crops that nutrient taken by the crops.

Residual Effect of Fertilizers: The extent of residues left over in the soil depends on the type of fertilizer used. Phosphatic fertilizer and FYM have considerable residue in the soil, which is useful for subsequent crops. The residues left by potassium fertilizers are marginal. Legumes add nitrogen to the soil in the range of 15 to 20 kg/ha. The amount of nitrogen added depends on the purpose. Green gram grown for grain, contributes 24 and 30 kg N respectively to the succeeding crop. Inclusion of leguminous green manures in the system add 40 kg to 120 kg N/ha. The availability of phosphorous is also increased by incorporation of green manure crops.

Climate and Ornamental Crops

There are many factors which affect the production of the ornamental crops. It may be internal or external factors. Climate and soils are the chief natural factors on which the success or failure of ornamental crops production is dependent. A knowledge of the effect of various soil and climatic conditions on ornamental crops production is very essential for every prospective to grower, climate includes several factors like temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, wind, hail, light whereas, soil covers such factors as moisture supply texture, pH etc.

Temperature: The rate of development of a plant (the leaf unfolding rate) is a function of temperature. As temperatures increase, the leaf unfolding rate increases. If the temperature exceeds the maximum temperature, plants experience stress and leaf unfolding rate declines. Given the high costs of fuel, many growers are tempted to reduce the greenhouse temperature to save money on fuel. Because the rate of crop development is dependent on temperature, reducing temperatures increases production time of all crops. However, some crops will be more severely delayed than others. Reducing temperatures from 20°C to 16°C increased time to flower of Salvia farinacea by 13 days. This same temperature drop only increased days to flower of pansy by four days. For crops that are severely delayed by lower temperatures, reducing the growing temperature may actually increase total fuel costs for producing that crop. Every plant has fairly well defined range of temperature to which it is tolerant and below which the plants of that variety are liable to be injured to a more or less extent.

The behavior of pesticides is dependent on many factors, so be sure to consider everything from light and temperature to moisture and pH and recognize that all the factors will impact the active ingredient. Here is some information on these topics, and others, which will improve pest management success.

1.Identification: The first step to disease and pest management success is the proper identification of the insect, disease or weed pest. Without identification of the pest, controls may be misused or improperly timed.

2.Time of Application: Time of application of pesticides plays major role in optimizing pesticidal performance. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to spray. Dust formulations should be apply in early morning hours (6 am).In the case of foliar spray, it should be done in morning hours between 8 am to 11 am. Avoid spraying during the heat of the day.

3.Water Quality and pH: Primary factors important in water quality are pH and alkalinity (bicarbonates). Most of the pesticides show high efficiency in slightly acidic to slightly basic water pH (i.e. 6.5 to 7.5). Many water sources in alkaline pH (<7.0). Alkali pH (7.5>) is always harmful for pesticides. High pH levels are responsible for alkaline hydrolysis, a process that breaks down the active ingredient in many insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.Add a buffer agent to lower spray solution to a pH of 5.5-6.5. This will give better initial knockdown and longer residual action.

The spermatogenesis is a continuous process in male animals but affected by following factors. 
    
1.     Genetic makeup of male animal: Certain sperm defects like Diadem defect, knobbed sperm, decapitated sperm, sterilizing tail stump, corkscrew mid piece and narrow head are inherited defects and reported in certain males. Few inherited genetic factors are also associated with poor libido and poor fertility. Inherited sperm defects affect sperm motility, fertilization and embryo formation.

Abstract

This research has analyzed the “Factors Affecting Shoes ‘Consumer Preference In Nekemte Town:-An Econometric Analysis” considering different age level, income level high grade completed, social status, and sex with an objectives of identifying determinants of preference of consumers between domestic goods and import close substitute goods. The study was under taken on the consumer goods that are produced in domestic industrial and imported from abroad because of international trade. The goods in this study are only shoes. The data is collected from 100 respondents with different age, income level, educational level and sex through both questionnaire and interview. More than half (51%) of respondents prefer to use locally substituted foreign products that were allowed to choose either foreign or domestic shoes. Proud of and conformity to one’s life styles have statistical significant positive association with preference of buying locally produced shoes. Youth especially youth females have strong attachment with foreign products. People considering the quality have preferred the current generation.

Silage fermentation is a dynamic process involving interactions among the forage, microbial populations and the ensiling environment. A good fermentation process is not only dependent on the type and quality of the forage crop, but also on the harvesting and ensiling technique. There are various factors that influence the fermentation process and ultimately the nutrient composition and quality of ensiled feed. These are as follows:

1. Plant Factors

Forage characteristics at the time of ensiling are the predominant factor which determines the final quality of silage. Factors such as type of forage to be ensiled, maturity, DM content and WSC content of that forage, all influence the ease of ensiling and ultimately the quality of silage that is produced.

Benefit of biofertilizers have been extensively studied for various agricultural and horticultural crops. However, the effectiveness of inoculated biofertilizers are influenced by several factors. If the use of biofertilizers have to be popularized in horticultural crops, the major factors affecting their performance particularly in relation to soil, plant, quality of the product and application methods have to be addressed. Factors affecting the performance of biofertilizers are:

4.1 Quality of the product

4.1.1 Production process

The high quality of biofertilizers are determined by the production process (Bashan et al., 2014). At the same time, the population density of mother culture and the quality of the final products are directly related (Stephens and Raskm, 2000). As the inoculum consists of a strain, the relationship among the microorganisms interaction in the rhizosphere have to be understood. In the case of more than one microorganisms, the efficiency depends on the various mode of action by various microorganisms which might overlap with antagonistic acitivities (Vassilev et al., 2001, 2006 b). The relationship of microorganisms with plants is not based on the taxonomic diversity, but their functional diversity (Maherali and Klironomos, 2007).

The efficiency of biofertilizers could be assured by enhanced shelf life of the inoculant and biological traits which are a challenge for developing a formulation (Bashan, et al., 2014). Hence, either single or consortia of microorganisms formulation with or without additives determines the efficacy of the biofertilizers. The formulation determines shelf-life during storage and transport, which enhances the persistence of the strain in soil and get maximum benefits to the host plants after inoculation (Manikandan et al., 2010; Schoebitz et al., 2012). Different kinds of carriers are used in the formulation process which affects the overall quality and efficacy of the biofertilizers (Bashan et al., 2014; Herrmann and Lesueur, 2013). Granular inoculants showed good results under stressed soil conditions (Clayton et al., 2004; Lupwayi et al., 2006). Encapsulation of the microbial strain into polymers allow diverse compositions and structures (Vassilev et al., 2005) but, have limitations for commercial production (Bashan, et al., 2014; John et al., 2011). Use of additives might improve the shelf life of the product (Bashan et al., 2014; Malusà et al., 2012; Herrmann and Lesueur, 2013) with introduction of specific substances to enhance the efficacy of biofertilizers.

Factors which influence the colonization and life cycle of VAM fungi have important bearing on the extent to which they may benefit their host. As we move closer to using mycorrhizal fungi to increase growth and productivity of different plant communities, a thorough understanding of the factors which influence their survival, germination, root colonization an d sporulation will be critical. Seasons, physico-chemical characters of the soil, agronomic practices, plant protection chemicals, pollutants and genotypic characters of the host may affect VAM fungi and their potentiality to colonize and provide benefit to the host. In view of this, the effect of such factors on the VA mycorrhizal symbiosis and its benefit to diverse plant communities has been extensively investigated worldover.

This chapter introduces the genetic, physiological, nutritional, environmental and management factors that determine wool quantity and quality. Breed establishes the genetic ceiling, while age, sex, pregnancy, lactation, nutrition, climate, stress, disease and parasites influence fibre growth. The chapter emphasizes the importance of steady nutrition, particularly sulphur-containing amino acids, for maintaining staple strength and fleece production. It also explains how breeding, husbandry, health management, shearing and preparation interact to determine the final commercial value of wool.

ABSTRACT

Bangladesh is a land of rivers, wet lands and tributaries across her deltaic plains in which aquaculture is a potential arena to meet dietary needs of protein. The main objective of this study was to bring out the dominating factors on adoption of modern aquaculture technologies by the fish farmers. The study was conducted in Kahaloo and Sherpurupazilas of Bogra district. Respondent fish farmers were selected using proportionate random sampling technique. Quantitative data were collected using predesigned interview schedule during August to September 2011. Socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents viz. ‘use of information sources’ ‘innovativeness’, ‘social participation’, ‘commercialization’ and hindrances of adoption i.e. ‘lack of technical knowledge’, ‘unavailability of credits in time’, ‘lack of quality fish fry’, ‘comparatively low market price’, ‘fish fry price is high’, ‘unavailability of quality fish feed’, ‘adulteration of fertilizers’ were the major dominating factors on adoption of modern aquaculture technologies. ‘formulated feed is costly’, ‘high production cost’

3.1. Non-Climatic Factors

Apart from climate several other non-climatic factors has to be considered before selection of proper greenhouse technology, which are listed in the following text.

1. Location and selection of site: The ideal location for greenhouse cultivation is an area having moderate climate with high sunlight, low humidity and good natural drainage. It is better to avoid storm prone areas or it is a must to take necessary protection, like wind-break and shelter belt, in such areas. However, selection of site, where the greenhouse will be constructed, is the first consideration to select the proper greenhouse technology. The proper selection of site will also depend upon various non-technical factors, which are listed below.

Postharvest loss of fruits and vegetables is defined as “that weight of wholesome edible product (exclusive of moisture content) that is normally consumed by human and that has been separated from the medium and sites of its immediate growth and production by deliberate human action with the intention of using it for human feeding but which for any reasons fails to be consumed by human.” Not only quantity and quality but even the appearance of fruits and vegetables are affected, and their market value is reduced. Most ‘skin deep’ injuries such as ‘fly speck’ in apples do not affect the edible part. Some infections are not harmful as they occur on inedible parts and can be trimmed off before consumption ego Colletotrichum spots on the outer leaves of cabbage]. Fresh fruits and vegetables are perishable and highly prone to these losses because they are composed of living tissues. These tissues must be kept alive and health throughout the process of marketing. These are composed of thousands of living cells which require care and maintenance (Alao, 2000). The pathological rots are the most serious which is followed by mechanical injury. Pathological rots in combination with mechanical damage cause serious damage to the perishables. Environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity and oxygen balance most especially during storage are also greatly responsible for damage also environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity are responsible for rendering fruits and vegetables susceptible for pathological attacks (Yahaya and Mardiyya, 2019). Fungi and bacteria are the major pathogens, which cause postharvest diseases in crops leading to about 30 % loss. Normally diseases will be more at improper temperature and relative humidity. Apart from causing disease, pathogens are also involved in ethylene production, which hastens the deterioration of the product.

8.1 Introduction

There are many theories that deal with the generation of innovations, their diffusion and adoption or non-adoption by the end users. Such theories include actor-network theory, knowledge systems and network theory, strategic niche management theory and adoption and diffusion of innovations theory (Rogers and Shoemaker, 1971; Rogers, 1983, 1993, 2003). Among the different theories, the diffusion and adoption theory has achieved a prominent position in the field of anthropology, sociology, public health, medical sociology, communication, marketing and management, economics, public administration, industrial engineering, geography and many other disciplines all over the world for more than half a century. The main elements of diffusion of innovation as identified by Rogers (1962) are: i) An innovation, ii) Communication channels, iii) Time and iv) Social system. This shows that diffusion of any innovation will take place only if a new idea or practice exists which is accepted by an individual or a group of people over a period of time. The rate of diffusion depends upon the availability of communication channels and structure of the social system. But, in 1966, Fliegal and Kivlin complained that the diffusion of innovation has the status of a basted child with respect to parent’s interest in social and cultural change: Too big to ignore but unlikely to give full recognition.

The sustainable agricultural practices include integrated pest management (IPM), integrated nutrient management (INM), soil conservation and water management. However, there is not a single technological innovation were the innovator/company that commercializes a technology is not interested whether it is adopted/purchased by the consumer.

Fungicides are only allowed after years of intensive testing for effectiveness against a variety of plant plant. When a disease is stated on the label of a fungicide, it can be presumed that the active ingredient inhibits pathogen growth and limits the occurrence and spread of disease within acceptable levels of control. Fungicides do not always perform as predicted in practice. Not because the active ingredient is useless, but because of other factors that influence its performance. Consider everything from light and temperature to humidity and pH, and remember that all of these variables affect the active ingredients. Audio-visual aids are employed individually or in combination, taking into account the following factors:

1. Size of Audience: Video presentations or whiteboards may not be effective when the audience exceeds 30 participants. Leaflets, bulletins, or handouts are suitable for one reader at a time, while public address systems or internet messages are suitable for large audiences.

2. Nature of Audience: Printed media are suitable for literate individuals, while exhibits, pictures, and symbols are more appropriate for those with lower literacy levels.

3. Teaching Objective / Expected Nature of Change: Audio-visual aids should be selected based on the objective of extension teaching, whether it aims to change:

• Thinking or knowledge,

• Attitude or feeling,

• Actions or skills.

The digital revolution is radically shifting how people create, manage, share and publish information, as well as how they relate, collaborate, communicate and share resources. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), Social Media, Web 2.0 and mobile applications have also significantly changed the livelihoods of the local farmers especially in developing countries.

The goods and services with the help of which the process of production is carried out, are called factors of production. Economists talk about four main factors of production: land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship (or organization). They are also called as the inputs of production. On the other hand, the goods produced with the help of these inputs, are called as the output.
1. Land
Land refers to all natural resources such as forests, water, climate, and soil. It provides space for livestock farms and raw materials for the dairy and meat industries.
Features of Land
1. Gift of Nature – Land and climatic conditions are naturally available. For example, the fertile plains of Punjab and Haryana are naturally suited for growing fodder crops like berseem and maize, which are essential for dairy farming. Similarly, the lush green pastures of Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh provide an ideal environment for rearing sheep and goats.
2. Limited in Supply – Land is fixed, and certain resources like water bodies and fodder resources may deplete over time. Water scarcity in regions like Maharashtra has forced farmers to shift from water-intensive crops to drought-resistant fodder crops.

Factories are the backbone of industrial growth for economic prosperity of any nation especially for developing countries like India. There is usually huge area available in the factories but the whole area is not covered under construction or used. The vacant spaces of the factory premises are ideal for development of gardens. Moreover, plantation of trees and development of greeneries are now compulsory in industrial areas as per laws for the purpose of environmental amelioration.

Purpose

Gardens at the factories and other industrial places are different from the normal ornamental gardens. These gardens are generally less intensive in nature. The main function isto fulfill dual purpose i.e., beautification and minimizing environmental pollution. Selection of plants should be evergreen trees, free flowering perennials tolerant to air pollution.

Scope

There are large open spaces available within the campus of factories. These are generally located along the boundary wall, inner open areas and other unutilized spaces. As a whole, there is ample scope for development of gardens and other kind of plantation.

Abstract

The Adam bridge, the curvilinear chains of islands linking India (Thanushkodi) with Sri Lanka (Thalaimannar), has been a matter of scientific and mythological debate. While the great epic Ramayana says that Lord Rama built this Adam bridge around 1.5 million years ago to bring back his wife Seetha from Srilanka who was a captive by king Ravana of Srilanka, some reports gave another view that it is coral islands of 1.7 million years of age. Under this backdrop, the author refutes the claim made by NASA that the Adam bridge was located firstly by one of its satellites and cited evidences that the Indian scientists located and mapped it using the IRS satellite data much earlier. Further, on the basis of bundles of beach ridges dated in Tiruthuraipoondi-Vedaranniyam area and as well as some of these continue up to Uchipulli area in Ramanathpuram district, the author assigned an age of 3500 YBP ( Years Before Present) to Uchipulli beach ridges seen in the main land to the west of Rameshwaram and Adam’s bridge and inferred that the Adam’s bridge must be equal to or younger than 3500 YBP. The easterly nosing of Indian mainland in Ramanathapuram – Rameshwaram – Thanushkodi and its further extension in the form of Adam bridge, the author demonstrated that the because of anticlockwisely rotating littoral currents to the north and clockwisely moving littoral currents to the south of Adam bridge, the chains sandy islands namely Adam’s bridge was formed by the segregation of sands in between currents shadow zone after 3500 YBP.

Studies and Findings

There was some coverage in the newspapers some time ago about the discovery of a land bridge (Adam’s Bridge) between Dhanushkodi (India) and Talaimannar (Sri Lanka) by NASA through one of its satellite mission. It was also written in some articles that this land bridge was constructed by Lord Rama 1.7 million years ago to reach Sri Lanka with the aim to bring back his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana. However, this linkage was refuted by NASA. It accepted that the picture was captured by one of its satellites, but it was unaware of the linkage of the land bridge with the great Indian epic Ramayana. Some reports gave another view and mentioned that the bridge was nothing, but 1.7 million years old coral reefs. Many historians have also come out against linking the Adam’s Bridge with Ramayana.

India possesses the largest livestock population globally. To sustain this extensive livestock sector, it is essential for the country to ensure a corresponding supply of feed and fodder that meets the growing demand. However, a significant barrier for enhancing livestock production in India is the inadequate availability of feeds and fodders, both in terms of quality and quantity. The limited land designated for cultivation approximately 3.3-4.4% of the total cultivable area coupled with the decline in pasture lands and a shift in cropping patterns from coarse cereals to commercial crops, poses substantial risks to fulfilling the nation’s feed and fodder requirements. A considerable portion of the coarse cereal byproducts is utilized as fodder. Projections indicate a shortfall of 28% to 35% in green fodder, 10% to 11% in dry fodder and 33% to 35% in concentrates (Niti Aayog, 2018). The current status of feed and fodder resources is insufficient to meet the rising demand. Proper feeding is vital for the improvement of livestock breeds, as inadequately fed improved breeds tend to deteriorate more quickly. Consequently, there is a persistent imbalance between the number of animals and the available feed resources.

Livestock feeds are generally classified according to the amount of a specific nutrient they furnish in the ration. They are divided into two general classes roughages and concentrates. Roughages are bulky feeds containing relatively large amount of less digestible material, i.e. crude fiber more than 18% and lower than 60% TDN on dry matter basis. A. Roughages

Roughages are subdivided into two major groups – succulent and dry, based upon the moisture content. Succulent feeds usually contain moisture content from 60 to 90%, whereas dry contains only 10 to 15% moisture. Succulent may again be divided into pasture, cultivated fodder crops, tree leaves, silage and root crops. Dry roughages may be further classified as hay and straw based on the nutritive value and methods of preservation.

Introduction

Agriculture has been the joint venture of both men and women since the time immemorial. Women play a significant role in agriculture and are responsible for half of the world’s food production in most of the developing countries. According to International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), women play a central role as producer of food, managers of natural resources, income earners and care takers of household food and nutrition security. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) studies also confirm that women are the mainstay of small scale agriculture, the farm labour force and day to day family subsistence. About 70 per cent of agricultural workers, 80 per cent of food producers and 10 per cent of those who process basic foodstuffs are women and thus making up more than two-third of the workforce in agriculture production. They currently account for 60-70 % of all food production in all the developing countries. Other than agriculture and allied sectors like dairy, poultry, fishery, goatery and sericulture, women are also skilled in handicrafts, wooden works and various other types of small enterprises which boost the rural economy. They are also involved in small scale enterprises like rope making, broom making, bamboo works. All women in rural areas, irrespective to their age, size of their family, size of land holding, caste and community, perform major agricultural tasks. The rural women form the most important productive work force in the economy of majority of the developing nations like India. Agriculture sector employs 4/5^th of all economically active women in the country and 48 per cent of India’s self employed farmers are women (Kumar, 2013). In present scenario, nearly 84 per cent of economically active women in India are engaged in agriculture and allied activities. In a study undertaken by DRWA (Directorate of Research on Women in Agriculture) in low land and rainfed rice in Odisha revealed that under low lying situation, women spent nearly 20 days in uprooting and transplanting, 10 days in intercultural operations and 20 days in harvesting and transportation. In up land rainfed rice women were involved for 40 days mainly in gap filling, weeding, harvesting threshing etc. (Arya, 2008). The rural women of low-income category and lower caste perform more work in farm related field activities while the women of higher income groups perform more work in post harvest processing like storing of food grains, parboiling, winnowing, preparing puffed rice etc. In tribal areas, women participate in all agricultural operations except ploughing. They are seen to do more hard work in the fields than men. Depending upon the socio-cultural variations among different tribal communities, Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) are collected by tribal women. They collect food, fodder, fuel, medicinal plants, building materials and other household materials. Every day during off seasons, they go to forest for collecting NTFPs and sell it in the local hats (market) for day to day expenditure of their family. Sal and kendu leaves are also collected by them for their livelihood support. Ladies are the decision makers in farming sector as well as on other domestic affairs because of their greater contribution of household income. Marketing of their produce and also other materials collected from forest by them are exclusively done by the women group. Tribes mostly depend on forest and forest products during the dry period of the year. Now-a-days non-availability of NTFPs has shifted women from self employed to wage employment.

World-wide, both in developing and in developed countries;family farming is one of the most predominant forms of agriculture. It includes a wide spectrum of farm sizes and types. In high-income economies, it ranges from very large land holdings that are easily cultivated by one or two family members with the use of labour-saving machinery and hired labour.     6.    Glyoxysomes : Glyoxysomes are temporary in that they occur during transient periods in the life cycle of a plant such as in certain beans and nuts which store fats in their seeds as energy reserves. Glyoxysomes appear in the first few days after seed germination in endosperm cells and associate closely with lipid bodies. They disappear after the storage fats are broken down and converted into carbohydrate.

It works to an average depth and width of 5 and 6 inches in alluvial soils, with a draught requirement of 185 lbs. It is used by 100% of the farming community in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. (ICAR, 1960)

6.2 Wetland Plough (Dammu Nagali) for Land Preparation: This plough is made from Babool, palmyra, and mild steel, weighing 30-40 kg. Operated by two bullocks and one man, it is attached to the yoke with ropes for puddling rice fields, covering half an acre per day. It has a draught of 200-220 kg and ploughs to a depth of 4-5 inches and width of 5-6 inches in black and red soils. Repairable locally, its annual maintenance costs range from Rs 0.5 to 1.0, with an operational cost of Rs 25 per hectare. It is widely used in the coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh (Guntur and West Godavari). (ICAR, 1960).
