1. INTRODUCTION

Thermal processing means preservation by application of heat. It involves heating of foods in hermetically sealed containers for a specific time at a specific temperature to eliminate the microbial pathogens that endanger public health and that micro-organisms that deteriorate food during storage. The credit for invention of thermal processing (Canning) goes to a French Confectioner, Nichola Appert. The application of heat is an important method of preserving foods and is also a means of developing texture, flavour and colour in some foods.

Introduction

ICT may be defined as technologies that facilitate communication and the processing and transmission of information by electronic means. ICT is an acronym that stands for Information Communications Technology and refers to technologies that facilitate communication and the processing of information by electronic means and includes everything from radio and television to telephones (fixed and mobile), computers and the internet. Information and communication has become an increasingly powerful tool for improving the delivery of basic services and enhancing local development opportunities. Recent years have seen increases in the use of ICT in almost all spheres of rural life. Especially, the rural communities require information among others on supply of inputs, innovations, improved technologies, credit, market prices and competitors. Since the concepts, methods and applications involved in ICT are constantly evolving on an almost daily basis. It’s difficult to keep up with the changes - they happen so fast.

Agricultural professionals continuously confront challenges in preventing pest infestations and managing temperature and moisture levels to protect grains from decay. They recognize the critical importance of safeguarding these valuable resources and rely on quick, dependable solutions to tackle common grain storage issues. Let’s take a closer look at the challenges faced by growers, handlers, transporters, and processors in long-term grain storage, and the strategies they employ to overcome these obstacles.
ABIOTIC FACTORS
There are also abiotic factors, which are non-living elements, that influence the quality of stored grains. Factors such as air, humidity, and temperature play a significant role in grain storage. If these factors are imbalanced in terms of quantity or quality, they can have a detrimental effect on the stored grains.
SPACE CONSTRAINTS
As crop yields continue to rise, farmers face the challenge of finding enough storage space to accommodate the increased harvest. Often, last year’s grain still fills storage bins when the new crop arrives, prompting the agricultural industry to seek innovative storage solutions.
The most straightforward solution to a shortage of storage space is to build additional bins. However, this option is not always feasible for smaller farms or processing facilities with limited budgets. As a result, many choose to repurpose existing barns or store surplus grain outdoors in piles. Unfortunately, this outdoor storage method comes with its own set of challenges, including faster spoilage and pest issues. To counter these problems, some facilities use temporary storage options such as grain bagging systems or outdoor storage tents. Mechanical ventilation systems are also employed to ensure proper aeration, reducing the risk of spoilage before the grain is moved to its final destination.

9.1. INTRODUCTION

A data are generally voluminous, so they need to be put in a compact and presentable form. This chapter deals with presentation of data precisely so that the voluminous data collected could be made usable readily and are easily comprehended. There are generally three forms of presentation of data:

Textual or Descriptive presentation

Tabular presentation

Diagrammatic presentation

The growing demand for sustainable materials has encouraged the development of green composites based on bio-based polymers and renewable reinforcements. This chapter explores advanced carbon nanomaterials, including graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and carbon quantum dots, as functional reinforcements for green composites. It discusses their synthesis, functionalization, incorporation into biopolymer and bio-based matrices, and influence on mechanical, electrical, thermal, and barrier properties. Particular attention is given to green synthesis approaches using biomass-derived resources, surface modification, dispersion, environmental considerations, scalability, cost, and life-cycle assessment. The chapter also considers future opportunities for multifunctional and commercially viable sustainable nanocomposites.

Introduction

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has evolved over the last five decades since Stern et al. (1959) first gave the concept of integrated control. The basic tactics of IPM were developed and applied to reduce crop losses against the ravages of pests before the term IPM was coined (Jones, 1973; Smith et al.,1973). Entomologist at the university of California, United State of America (USA) played a pivotal role in developing IPM tactics (Perkins, 1982). Development of resistance to insecticides and the elimination of natural enemies by insecticides led to the development of ‘supervised control’. The publication of the book ‘Silent Spring’ written by Rachel Carson (1962) was a defining milestone for it brought the problems caused by pesticides to the attention of the public and the scientists. The term ‘integrated pest management’ was used for the first time by Smith and van dan Bosch (1967). In the last five decade many synthetic pesticides have been banned. In 1972, ’integrated pest management’ and its synonym were incorporated into English dictionary and accepted by the scientific community (Kogan, 1998). IPM is the main strategy accepted for pest management under agenda 21 of the United Nations conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, 1992).

The preceding chapters have firmly established the conceptual foundations of the systems approach and introduced the diverse world of crop models, highlighting their intricate mechanisms and their transformative potential for agroadvisory. However, even the most elegantly formulated and sophisticated crop model is ultimately a framework; its predictive power and reliability are inherently tethered to the quality and availability of the information it receives. As the adage in data science goes, Garbage in, garbage out– a truth that resonates profoundly within the realm of agricultural system simulation. The chapter shifts focus from the theoretical constructs of models to the vital practical considerations of data requirements. This chapter will delve into the indispensable role that accurate, comprehensive, and well-structured data plays in every stage of crop modeling, from initial parameterization and rigorous calibration to robust validation and reliable application. Without the right data, even a theoretically perfect model cannot accurately mimic the complex dynamics of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum or provide trustworthy insights for agricultural decision-making. This chapter will systematically unpack the various categories of data essential for crop modeling. It will meticulously detail the specific characteristics and sources of weather data, which serve as the primary atmospheric drivers. It will then explore the crucial properties and measurement techniques for soil data, underpinning the understanding of water and nutrient availability. The discussion will extend to crop genetic and physiological data, which define the inherent capabilities and responses of specific plant varieties. Furthermore, the chapter will cover management data, illustrating how human interventions are integrated into the modeling framework. Beyond merely listing data types, this section will critically examine the challenges associated with data acquisition, including issues of quality, resolution, consistency, and spatial representativeness.

1. INTRODUCTION

In recent years, fruit and vegetable consumption has grown rapidly. Today’s society is characterized by an increasing health consciousness and growing interest in the role of food for maintaining and improving human well-being and consumer health. Due to consumer’s profile being ‘‘rich in cash/poor in time’’, there is a demand for ready-to-eat products As a result of changes in consumer attitudes, the market of minimally processed (MP) fruits and vegetables has grown rapidly. In addition to their nutritional and sensory properties, foods are currently recognized as active and protective agents. Among the others, minimally processed products stand out as convenient novel foods that fit the many needs of a modern lifestyle as they combine technical content with an innovative food concept. Fresh fruits and vegetables are an essential component of a healthy diet, able to decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Their consumption has continued to grow rapidly, linked to the increased public awareness of their health benefits.

Minimal Processing’ (MP) is a concept describing approaches to food safety and preservation that are designed to retain the natural and as-fresh properties of foods. Minimally processed fruits are new forms of product marketing, intended to meet the consumers’ desires for convenience and fresh-like quality. Minimally processed fruits and vegetables, also called ready-to-use, fresh-cut or pre-cut produce, are raw fruits and vegetables that have been washed, peeled, sliced, chopped or shredded into 100% usable product that is bagged or packaged to offer to the consumers high nutrition, convenience, and flavour while still maintaining its freshness.

Introduction

Arid Horticulture denotes cultivation of fruits and vegetables under dry and arid regions. Arid region in India is stretched over 39.54 million ha (31.71 million ha is under hot arid region and 7.38 million ha under cold arid region) comprising about 12.02% of the total area of the country. Most of the precipitation in north-western arid region takes place from July to September. Occasional frost has also been a grave issue for horticultural crops, especially, aonla and moringa (Dhandar and Saroj, 2004). The region is exemplified by low and erratic rainfall with extremes of temperature (1–48°C), high wind velocity and sandy soils (Bhandari et al. 2014). Growing of annual crops restricted only a particular season of the year is the merely source of livelihood for the inhabitant of these region. These crops often encounter abiotic stresses like drought, hot and desiccating winds during their growth period leading to poor productivity. These regions have tremendous potential for cultivation of perennial fruit trees.

Ruminant, major source of meat and milk for human consumption, whose digestive system has evolved in such a way that it provides an additional advantage of being non-competitive to human food chain. Global warming is real and rising with a pace threatening lives of all flora and fauna on earth. Methane produced by ruminant bacteria predominately by methanogen group of bacteria acting as hydrogen sink cause loss of dietary energy to the animal affecting its potential productivity as well as a major source of global warming. The use of plant secondary metabolites is preferred as a feed additive in ruminant diet to improve fatty acid production by reducing enteric methane. The study was carried out using 10% aqueous and ethanolic extract of Psidiumguajawa leaves powder, citrus fruit peel powder to assess in vitro rumen fermentation parameters. The in vitro trial was conducted by taking different concentrations @ 0.2 ml, 0.5ml, 1ml and 2 ml of plant extracts with substrate media containing rumen fluid. After 6 and 24 hours of incubation, pH, total gas production, ammonia- nitrogen, TVFA and total nitrogen were measured. Bacteroides and methanogenic bacterial profile was done by Real time PCR. The results revealed that the total gas production decreased in plant extract supplemented samples with respect to control. Total nitrogen production increased in aqueous P. guajawa and increase in TVFA was observed in all plant extract supplemented samples. Ammonia- nitrogen production does not vary significantly, indicating no change in NPN degradation due to supplementation of different plant extracts at different concentration. Total bacteroides expression were increased in rumen samples treated with P. guajawa and citrus peel powder, while a decrease in methanogenic bacterial expression was observed in plant extracts supplemented samples as compared to control indicating an improvement in rumen fermentation further enhancing productivity.

Introduction

Information technology is set to become important in agriculture in the coming years. In the last few decades, the application of computers and communication technologies has led to the development of a plethora of information of all types in the area of plant protection science. These information bases are available on CD-ROM, on-line form in various hosts and via mail over internet, multimedia data bases, Decision-Support Systems (DSS)/Expert Systems (ES), Simulation Models (SM), etc.- to cite a few of the latest developments. Further, cyber space is fast emerging as an area of information technology, particularly in the field of crop pest management (Srivastava and Swain, 1998). The application of information technology in pest management has been one of the most exciting developments in the field over the last decade. From the 1960s, the entomologists began using computers for spray scheduling, population modeling, exploring control strategies and managing pest monitoring data. More recently, computers are being utilized in pest management delivery systems and decision support systems (DSS) designed to enhance decision making.

The concept of indigenous knowledge or indigenous knowledge system (IKS) delineates a cognitive structure in which theories and perceptions of nature and culture are conceptualized. Thus, it includes definitions, classifications and concepts of the physical, natural, social land economic environments. The dynamics of IKS takes places on two different levels, the cognitive and empirical. On the empirical levels, IKS is visible in institutions, artifacts and technologies.

Two-dimensional nanomaterials have expanded the possibilities for designing advanced green composites with tailored multifunctional properties. This chapter focuses on MXenes and nanosilicates, including laponite, montmorillonite, and halloysite, as important alternatives and complements to graphene-based nanomaterials. Their integration into green composite matrices can influence mechanical strength, thermal stability, barrier characteristics, surface functionality, and other performance parameters. The chapter examines the development of advanced green composites based on these nanomaterials and considers their potential for sustainable material design. Particular attention is given to the relationship between nanoscale structure, matrix interaction, and composite performance, highlighting opportunities for multifunctional and environmentally responsible material systems.

In whole of the world, about 6 to 7 m ha of agricultural land is becoming unproductive every year due to one or the other reasons (Gupta, 2018a). This is, however, more so in case of developing countries (Gupta, 2003). Productive lands are utmost important to meet the countryís growing needs for food, fodder, fuel wood, medicinal herbs and timber.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful and versatile analytical technique through which mass of an atom, or a molecule is assessed. It helps for identification and structure elucidation of various complex compounds. The instrument used is known as Mass Spectrometer. It serves the purpose of qualitative identification, confirmation as well as the quantification of an atom or a molecule. MS identification is conclusive because the mass spectrum of each substance is unique. In general, MS instruments are composed of a sample inlet, an ionization source, a molecule accelerator, a detector, an amplifier, and a recorder (Figure 7.1)

This chapter, Potential and Achievable Crop Production, delves into the crucial distinction between what a crop can produce under ideal circumstances and what it actually produces in the farmer‘s field. Understanding this dichotomy is paramount for addressing global food security challenges, optimizing resource utilization, and developing sustainable agricultural practices. We will begin by exploring the theoretical maximum yield, often termed "potential production," which represents the inherent capacity of a crop variety to produce biomass and yield when all limiting factors are eliminated. This potential is primarily dictated by a crop‘s genetic makeup and the prevailing climatic conditions, such as solar radiation, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. Subsequently, we will shift our focus to achievable production, the real-world yield obtained by farmers. This actual yield invariably falls short of the potential due to a myriad of biotic (pests, diseases, weeds), abiotic (water scarcity, nutrient deficiencies, extreme temperatures, poor soil health), and socio-economic (lack of access to inputs, knowledge, or markets) constraints. The disparity between potential and achievable yield, known as the "yield gap," represents a significant opportunity for enhancing agricultural output without necessarily expanding cultivated land. By meticulously examining the factors that contribute to this gap, we can identify targeted interventions and innovative strategies to bridge it, thereby moving closer to realizing the full productive capacity of our agricultural systems. This chapter will therefore provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the science behind crop yields and the practical approaches required to optimize them for a more food-secure future.

ABSTRACT

Expert Systems could be incorporated into extension education programmes to assist in solving problems using knowledge gathered from experts. During the process of problem solving, the Expert System becomes a source of educational material for the user. Hypertext may be incorporated into an Expert System as a means of providing the user with additional information. A hypertext approach to system development involves attaching information to specific phrases used in the system. The form of attached information can be textual, graphical or procedural. The methodology of developing expert system consists of two parts viz., developing computer-based Expert System and testing its effectiveness. The first part includes selection of most relevant subject matter area and procedure used in the development of an Expert System. The second part deals with the research design and technique adopted to test the effectiveness of computer-based Expert System versus human expert.
