Introduction

Fertilization is the application of fertilizer for the benefit of the crops. It may be traditional broadcasting or fertigation. In broadcasting method the fertilizer is applied in concentrated granular form. The size of the granules ranges from granular dust to pellet size. These solid fertilizers get dissolved by the rain or irrigated water to leach down the plat root zone. This method results uneven nutrient delivery due to uneven dissolving the fertilizer granules. It may cause burning of plant leaves and root system due to uneven and uncontrolled release of nutrients. Dry fertilizers can volatilize and release gases which may damage or burn the nearby foliage. Availability of fertilizer to the plant root zone largely depends on the temperature and availability of water to dissolve the fertilizers.

In fertigation liquid or water-soluble fertilizer, soil amendments or other products required by the plants is either sprayed on to the plant material or applied to the plant bottom with irrigation water. Foliar application provides high rate of absorption of fertilizer through the leaf/stalk/branch structures of plants. Ground application also provides good consistency in making its way to root zone and plant absorption. Thus, the fertigation provides benefit of increased nutrient absorption; decrease water needs, and reduce the fertilizer and chemical use (Anonyms, 2005).

Introduction
Fertilization is sequence of events that begins with contact between a sperm and an oocyte, resulting in fusion of two gametes and formation of a zygote (unicellular embryo). Site of fertilization is distal end of ampulla of fallopian tube (ampulla-isthmus junction) in mammals and in birds, is infundibulum. Only 1% of sperms deposited in vagina enter cervix. Movement of sperm from cervix to uterine tube occurs by muscular contractions of uterus & uterine tube and by their own propulsion. Immediately after ovulation, ovum is caught by the fimbriae of the infundibular part of oviduct and is brought to the ampulla.Cilia along epithelium of oviduct moves OCc. In farm animals (except swine) corona radiata cells drop off in ampulla. In swine, they persist and help in attachment of ova to each other in forming egg-clumps. The optimum fertilizable life of egg in most mammals is 12-24 hours after ovulation, but in dog it may extend up to 4 days.

Capacitation
Spermatozoa are not able to fertilize the oocyte immediately after arrival in female genital tract. To acquire fertility, they must reside there for a certain period of time. The changes that occur during this period constitute capacitation. Ejaculated spermatozoa must be exposed to secretions of female reproductive tract for a variable period of time before they attain capacity to fertilize oocyte. The secretions of uterus & oviduct participate in capacitation. Important processes during capacitation are: 1. Surface of spermatozoa in region of epididymis acquires certain molecules (proteins & carbohydrates in nature) and in seminal plasma, these molecules are masked by surface proteins. In female reproductive tract, these molecules along with surface proteins are removed. Removal of cholesterol and GAGs sperm cell surface.

Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985 which is administered by Deptt.of Agriculture Cooperation, Govt. of India has been issued under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The FCO lays, down as to what substances qualify for use as fertilizers in the soil, product-wise specifications, methods for sampling and analysis of fertilizers, procedure for obtaining license/registration as manufacture/dealer in fertilizers and conditions to be fulfilled for trading thereof, etc.

Fertilizers are required where soils are deficient in plant food elements. When land is planted to crops over a long period of time, the plant food elements slowly get reduced and productivity of crop goes down. Sandy soil looses plant food elements rapidly because heavy rainfall or application of irrigation water leaches these elements out from the soil. Adding chemical fertilizer increases fertility of soil. Principally nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium are added to the soil to promote greater yields. Uniform distribution and proper placement of fertilizer in the soil have become increasingly important factor in providing maximum crop response at minimum cost. Placing the fertilizer near the seeds at the time of sowing results in more effective utilization of nutrients. In the row crops side dressing of fertilizer is done which has immediate benefit when placed in the moist soil within the root zone.

The method of fertilizer application should be selected appropriately taking into consideration the age and stage of crop plants, their root extensibility, type of orchard management, kind and amount of fertilizers to be applied. The fertilizers should be given over the area of crop plants, where their active roots are spread. In fruit trees, fertilizer should be given in restricted area i.e. in the surrounding area of about 1 to 1.5 m away from the trunk of the trees in active root zone.

When to apply the fertilizers?

Majority of the crops require nutrients at different stages like growth & development, flowering and fruit setting time. In fruit crops, stages like new flushes emergence, floral buds differentiation and fruit development require more nutrients. Time of application of fertilizers may also vary depending on types of fertilizers, need of the crops, soil and climate.

This growth necessitates enhanced agricultural practices to meet market needs while maintaining sustainable production systems. Efficient fertilizer use is paramount in this context as it directly affects the productivity, profitability and environmental impact of floriculture operations. Fertilizer efficiency refers to the ability to maximize plant nutrient uptake while minimizing waste and environmental degradation. Achieving this balance is crucial for sustainable f loriculture, as it helps reduce input costs, enhances plant health and mitigates adverse environmental effects such as nutrient runoff and soil degradation.

Knowledge of fertilizer dose, selection of fertilizer sources, time and method of application is essential for achieving efficient use of fertilizers and profitable yield.

A. Fertilizer Dose

Fertilizer dose for crops is determined based on the field experimentation. It varies with the crops and varieties, initial fertility of the soil, soil properties, cropping system, climate, season, rainfed or irrigated crop, expected yield etc. Fertilizer dose for rainfedcrops (Kg/ha)

Fertilizer N has been the key input in increasing cereal production throughout the world. In India, it made possible to achieve the yield potential of high-yielding dwarf varieties of wheat that led to ‘Green Revolution in 1968’. Nitrogen fertilization also increases protein content in wheat grains (Rajeswara Rao and Prasad, 1987) and leads to increased production of proteins in cereals (Prasad and Shivay, 2015). Cereal production in India increased from 42.4 million tonnes (Mt) in 1950–51 to 259.6 Mt in 2017–18, while fertilizer N application increased from 0.05 Mt to 16.96 Mt. However, the average agronomic ef?ciency of N (AEn) in India for cereals is only 9.5 kg grain kg–1 N (Sharma and Batra, 2011) as compared to global average of 24 kg grain kg–1 N for maize, 22 kg grain kg–1 N for rice and 18 kg grain kg–1 N for wheat (Ladha et al., 2005). Besides this, more disturbing is the fact that in irrigated areas the AEn declined from 13.4 to 3.4 kg grain kg–1 N during 1970–2005 (Biswas and Sharma, 2006). This is due to poor N management. Bulk of fertilizer N is applied broadcast on surface in most crops.

Fertilizers are applied to supplement nutrient requirement of the crop. It should not be looked as a substitute to organic sources. After determination of nutrient requirement of a crop fora given yield and contribution of nutrients from different sources, articularly, from the soil source, it is necessary to supplement the balance from the inorganic sources. These are determined by field experimentation supplemented by pot-culture, laboratory and green housestudies, if necessary. When a fertilizer is applied all of its nutrient (s) are not absorbed by the crop. The interactions between soil-crop-season and other factors are quite significant. Only a fraction of the nutrient(s) is utilized by the crop.

India’s economic prosperity is reliant on the agriclimate. The nation confronts particular challenges in guaranteeing food security and optimising agricultural yield because of its large and varied landscape. Using fertilisers strategically and sensibly is one of the main reasons Indian agriculture is so successful. Fertilisers are essential for preserving the fertility of the soil, improving crop health, and satisfying the nation’s growing need for food security.

Ensuring Soil Fertility

India’s economy is mostly based on agriculture, with a sizable section of the populace working in the field.However, there are significant regional differences in India’s soil fertility, with certain parts missing essential nutrients for crop growth.

Plant requires food or nutrients or elements for its growth and development which are absorbed through soil. Adequate supply of plant nutrients is important to ensure efficient crop production. Plant nutrients are essentially applied through manures and fertilizers. Application of manures and fertilizers to the soil is one of the important factors which help in increasing the crop yield and to maintain the soil fertility. 
Manures
Manures are plant and animal wastes that are used as source of plant nutrients. They release nutrient after their decomposition. These are relatively bulky materials, such as animal or green manures, which are added mainly to improve the physical condition of the soil, to replenish and keep up its humus status, to maintain the optimum conditions for the activities of soil micro-organisms and make good a small part of the plant nutrients removed by crops or otherwise lost through leaching and soil erosion.

Many materials can be applied to the soil as source of plant nutrients but the term fertilizer is often used to refer to relatively soluble nutrient sources with a high analysis or concentration. Commercially available fertilizers supply essential elements in a variety of chemical forms but many are relatively simple inorganic salts. Advantages of commercial fertilizers are their high water solubility, immediate availability to the plants, high concentration and low price per unit of nutrient, and the uniformity and accuracy with which specific amounts of available nutrients can be applied. Since they are relatively homogeneous compounds of fixed and known composition, it is fairly easy to calculate precise application rates and attain relatively consistent performance. This is in contrast to organic nutrient sources, which are a much greater challenge to manage because of their variable composition, variable nutrient availability and patterns of nutrient release that are greatly affected by temperature, moisture and other conditions that alter biological activity.

The solubility of commercial fertilizers can sometimes be a problem since soluble nutrients may move out of farm fields when applied in excess or large rains occur soon after fertilizer application. Soluble nutrients can be lost by leaching on well-drained soils and through tile outlets or in runoff on poorly drained soils. Denitrification can cause large losses of nitrate-N from water-saturated soils in wet springs.

Increasing soil cation exchange capacity by increasing organic matter reduces the movement and loss of some nutrients, although not nitrate-N (an anion). Management practices that synchronize nutrient availability with crop demand and uptake also minimize losses. Both application timing and the amount of fertilizer applied are important. Splitting fertilizer application into several small applications rather than a single large one is especially important to limit nitrogen leaching on well-drained sandy soils. Split nitrogen applications can also reduce nitrogen losses in runoff or from denitrification on poorly drained soils. Excess nutrient applications can be eliminated or at least significantly reduced by soil testing on a regular basis, setting realistic yield goals and fertilizing accordingly, accounting for all nutrient sources such as legumes, manure and other amendments and using plant analysis as a monitoring tool for the fertilizer program.

Potato plays a vital role in food security for ever increasing world population (Thiele et al., 2010; Scott and Sourez, 2011; Scott and Sourez, 2012). It is highly capital and labour intensive crop (Kushwah and Singh, 2011). Presently, India is the second largest potato producer in the world. India is producing about 45-48 million tonnes of potato annually from about 2 million hectare of area. However, India would require 125 million metric tonnes of potato from 3.6 million hectare area in 2050 (Vision, 2050). The stagnating growth rates of cereals’ productivity, large scale diversion of food grains to feed & bio-fuel and expected steep rise in per capita consumption of pulses, edible oil, fruits, vegetables, milk, sugar and non-vegetarian food in the regime of steadily rising population is bound to put pressure on existing cultivable land. Since, cultivable land is expected to remain more or less constant in the next 40 years, the role of crops like potato having higher production potential per unit land and time will become imperative. In this context potato crop has very high probability of making crucial contribution to the future national food security agenda. The perceived changes in Indian socio-economics in the medium and long term are expected to enhance per capita food consumption of fresh potatoes.

Fertilizer and nutrient recommendations for different crops are mostly region specific and very general in nature which results into a blanket application of fertilizer leading to its poor efficacy and wastage of costly resources as well as of environmental pollution. In addition, this has caused severe imbalance of nutrients in soil. The spatial variability of available nutrients properly mapped along with other relevant parameters will help to develop site specific nutrient management practices with increased productivity and profitability apart from checking nutrient imbalance and environmental pollution.

Fertilizer

Fertilizers are defined as materials having definite chemical composition with a high analytical value that supply essential plant nutrients in available form. They are usually manufactured by industries and sold with a trade name. They are commonly synthetic in nature and also called as chemical fertilizers/inorganic fertilizers/commercial fertilizers other than lime and gypsum. Most of the chemical fertilizers are inorganic in nature.

Any material of natural or synthetic origin added to the soil to supply one or more plant nutrients.

10.1. Classification of fertilizers

10.1.1. Straight fertilizers

Supply only one primary plant nutrient, namely nitrogen or phosphorus or potassium.

Eg. Urea, ammonium sulphate, potassium chloride and potassium sulphate.

Organic Fertilizers and Manures

Farmers have been using organic waste as fertilizers for a very long time. As previously mentioned, the application of O.M. to a soil can have number of beneficial effects on soil structure, C.E.C. and microbial activity. However, organic manures mainly originate from the waste products of animal and plant production and although rich in carbon compounds, they are usually relatively poor in available plant nutrients.

The nutrient content of organic manures varies widely depending on their source and moisture content. Farm yard manure (F.Y.M.) is one of the most common organic fertilizers used. Others are concentrated animal manures, and crop residues such as straw.

The thermal range ideal for poultry rearing is 130C to 240C and is known as thermo neutral zone. Any temperature on either side of this zone falls in the critical range (240C-380C and 0-130C) and is detrimental to birds. Heat stress (HS) happens when the amount of heat produced by a bird exceeds the bird’s capability to dissipate the heat from the body to its surrounding environment both by sensible and insensible heat loss. The imbalance between heat production and dissipation result due to variations in a combination of various factors viz. sunlight, temperature of the air, humidity etc. and individual variations at bird level viz. sex, breed, species and physiological status (Lara and Rostagno, 2013). During heat stress, the birds reduce their heat production by decreased feed intake and increased water consumption.

11.1 Introduction

In previous chapters we have described fiber optic sensors based on intensity and phase modulations. These sensors have some problems in practical applications that need to be solved. Some of these are fluctuation of light source power, loss in couplers, scattering and absorption effects that affect measurement performance, temperature drifts and vibrations. In comparison to intensity and phase modulated sensors fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have following advantages:

Insensitive to intensity fluctuation because the signal obtained from an FBG sensor is encoded directly in wavelength domain.

Cotton

Cotton is one of the most important fiber and cash crop of India and play a key role in economic and social affairs of the world. Cotton is referred to as “King of Fibres” and also known as “White Gold”. India is largest produces of accounting for 22% cotton in the world. Nearly 65 per cent of the cotton crop is grown under rainfed conditions. Cotton production, processing and trade provides livelihood to several millions of people.

Scientific Name : Gossypium hirsutum

Family : Malvaceae

Origin: Cotton has been used as a fabric in India from time immemorial. It has been cultivated in the Indus Valley for more than 5000 years before. The excavations of Mohen-jo-daro indicates a high degree of art in spinning and weaving with cotton at that time. It finds mention in the Rigveda, the oldest scripture of the Hindus. Manu also refers to it in his Dharma Shasta. India appears to have been the centre of an important cotton industry as early as 1500 B.C.

Benign/malignant tumor may arise from fibrous tissue. Fibroma mostly occurs in the dermis or subcutis of limbs and head.

The tumour is most commonly seen in adult and aged dogs. It occurs anywhere on the body surface. It is due to trauma, chronic inflammation, vaccination, genetic predisposition etc.

Methods to Improve Fidelity

a) Use several channels of communication

To say the same thing, thus providing a duplication of information. Multiplying the channels used will make communication redundant. A smile, a node of the head, a firm hand shake or embrace and the greeting "Hi! How are you?" often convey the same meaning – meaning that would be conveyed through a single channel or redundantly through more than one.

b) Control the speed of communication

Information is processed by different individuals at different speeds. The rate varies for each situation and for each of the individuals in various situations. In talking casually to a few friends, we might speak very quickly where as in talking to a large group of strangers, we might want to talk more slowly because of the increased possibility for misunderstanding, the intrusion of noise. Whether we should speed up, slow down, or become more succinct (briefly and clearly explained) has to be a function of the feedback we gain. There is no specific rate that is ideal for all – except that rate at which a high degree of fidelity can be attained. It is the rate at which the amount of noise affecting the communication can be minimized. Sender and receiver should be aware of how communication works and interested in achieving the greatest f idelity possible

All infectious agents, toxins, and nutritional imbalances have an impact on the performance of the farm and consequently on the local poultry industry. Additionally, poultry can be infected with common diseases like endoparasites, ectoparasites, infectious bronchitis, Marek’s disease, fowl cholera, salmonellosis, infectious coryza, fowl pox, avian encephalomyelitis, etc.

Controlling infectious diseases is vital for poultry health and diagnostic methods are an indispensable feature to resolve disease etiologies and the impact of infectious agents on the host. Although the basic principles of disease diagnostics have not changed, the spectrum of poultry diseases constantly expanded, with the identification of new pathogens and improved knowledge on epidemiology and disease pathogenesis. In parallel, new technologies have been devised to identify and characterize infectious agents, but classical methods remain crucial, especially the isolation of pathogens and their further characterization in functional assays and studies.

In poultry medicine, the diagnostic process originally shifted from the traditional veterinarian approach centered on individual animals to the health assessment of entire flocks. Flocks are commonly classified as “healthy” if they perform according to their genetic potential and are considered free from clinical disease. On-farm, diagnostic activities comprise routine sampling and investigations in line with health control programs; nationally and/or internationally adopted control programs for certain Mycoplasma and Salmonella species represent examples of paramount importance. Samples may be investigated immediately on site (e.g., rapid antigen test for avian influenza) or sent for further processing to a laboratory (e.g., ELISA and PCR). Field veterinarians further implement diagnostic surveillance in order to provide epidemiological data for flock management purposes. The periodical collection of samples (e.g., feces, serum samples, and swabs from mucosal surfaces) is primarily used to confirm the infection (free) status of a flock or to monitor vaccine response. Altogether, generated data facilitate objective judgment and decision making in order to optimize flock health and production.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) in the family Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae have enormous potential to control insect pests of economic importance. Since, chemical pesticides pose environmental hazards, these nematodes have received considerable attention as potential bio-insecticides because of their wide host spectrum, active host seeking, killing the host within 48 h, easy mass production, storage and application and are environmentally safe. One of the important criteria for a successful biocontrol agent is formulation of nematodes into a stable product, which has played a significant role in commercialization of these biological control agents. Apart from formulation field application and desired control of insect pests decides the success of EPN.

Formulation of Entomopathogenic Nematodes

EPNs have been known since 1929 but they became commercially available only during 1990s.The first attempts at formulating EPN were initiated in 1979 but the shelf life was very limited (one month). Infective juveniles carried on moist substrates such as sponge, vermiculite and peat require continuous refrigeration to maintain their viability. While formulating nematodes, two things are necessary, a long shelf-life and easy application method. The simplest method is impregnating a moist substrate (such as sponge, peat, vermiculite, etc.) with nematodes. The sponge needs to be squeezed in water before application, to release the nematodes, whereas nematodes from other carriers could be applied directly to the soil. However, these formulations are labour-intensive, require continuous refrigeration and lack economy of scale and therefore can be used on small scale only.

Although the infective juveniles of entomopathogenic nematodes can be stored for several months in water in refrigerated bubbled tank, high cost and difficulties of maintaining quality preclude the deployment of this method. Therefore, nematodes are usually formulated into solid or semi-liquid substrates soon after they are produced.

There are two kinds of field notes

The field diary is the basic document which contains all the data collected. Facts and interpretations are to be written separately and conversations to be noted in the vernacular languages. Two kinds of field notes are to be observed a) Taking notes on the spot b) Writing detailed diary.

Daily field diary

It is instructed to write the field diary everyday in which a) Detailed notes of observations b) Field notes on discussion and conversations c) Details of Interpersonal communication, gossips, fold history‘s similar events d) Specific details of special events Specific reference about the main field of study for instance, the details about the process of message diffusion, various kinds of channels of communication were described in detail.

Field diary for research process documentation

The most useful tool for a process documenter is a field diary. The documenter uses a field diary to record his or her observations and thoughts in an orderly fashion. Recording observations and impressions enables a researcher to pick up clues about how the system is operating. A field diary should help the investigator understand the systems physical and social setting. It should help describe who, what, why, where, when and how. Who refers to the people or system being studied. What concerns the information gathered. Why, where, when and how provide important details about the observation.

There is no special format in writing a field diary but entries should be written daily in chronological order so information is not forgetten or changed because of forgetfulness. The critical concern is that observations are recorded in a diary regularly.

ABSTRACT

Lack of high yielding varieties, variation among progenies through seedling propagation and transmission of viral diseases through sucker propagation together contribute to the decline in productivity of large cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb). To increase the productivity of this crop, planting material raised through tissue culture techniques from few selections having higher productivity was considered. From the study, it was revealed that TC plants were superior to conventionally propagated plants due to vigorous growth during juvenile phase, precocity in the yield and higher productivity compared to that of open pollinated seedlings.

Introduction

Fresh fruit journey from the farm to the consumer’s table is an intricate process which needs a lot of attention. The way that the produce is harvested and handled is of supreme importance in relation to its quality shelf life and general market attractiveness. Improper handling practices during these critical stages can bring both quantitative and qualitative loses hence the perishable produce will lose its commercial value and appeal to the consumers (Kader, 2005). No doubt the significance of successful harvesting and post-harvest handling practices is crucial and has an impact on quality features and safety in case of fresh fruits. Poor management can cause physical assault ripening speed and more susceptibility to the growth of micro-organisms which makes the produce unsuitable for consumption or processing.

To store liquid nitrogen a special type of container is used and is known as a LIQUID NITROGEN CONTAI NER OR CRYOCAN. Frozen semen doses are always preserved in liquid nitrogen which is an inert liquid having a boiling point of -1960C and a freezing point of -212°C. Liquid Nitrogen Containers are doubled walled metal (Stainless Steel/Aluminium) vacuum vessels with a very efficient insulation system. Due to highly efficient insulation system the temperature inside the container can remain -196 oC as long as atleast two inches of Liquid Nitrogen is present in the container. It has got an inner chamber which is suspended in outer chamber through neck tube which is a non metal and bad conductor of heat. Walls of the inner chamber are coated with a high quality of insulation material. The space between the inner and outer chamber is also filled with high quality insulation material. Vacuum is created in between inner and outer chamber. Loss of vacuum will lead to the boiling of the liquid nitrogen gas and hence rapid loss of this gas from the inner chamber.

Introduction

For optimum use of harvested rain water in surface reservoir like farm ponds or tankas, small sized solar PV pumping systems with 1 hp AC and DC motor were experimentally tested at research farms of ICAR-Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur (Fig. 16.1). Total suction head in both pumps was about 5 m. Among two installed pumps, the system with AC pump consisted of 1400 Wp (200 Wp × 7) whereas the DC pump consisted of PV array of 920 Wp (230Wp × 4). Each PV panel of AC solar pump was connected in series, which was further connected with an inverter to generate AC output of about 220-240 volt and 4-4.2 ampere. In case of DC solar pump, panels are connected in parallel to generate DC output of 40-50 volt and 15-20 ampere.

Plant breeding activities basically involve development of new and superior crop varieties to replace the old ones and this naturally needs comparison of several lines/cultivars for agronomically important traits which are often quantitative in nature. Therefore, lots of environmental influences are there on the mean performance and mere numerical comparison of mean data is not sufficient to draw valid conclusions regarding the superiority of one variety over the other. Great advances have been made during the last about 100 years in the area of experimental designs and analytical procedures to facilitate such comparisons. Most commonly used designs by the plant breeders are included here for better understanding by the students and the breeders and to handle the experimental data on their own when confronted with such issues. Before applying statistical procedures on the experimental designs, it must be well understood that proper use of field plot technique is of great value to have meaningful data for further statistical analysis and use.

Introduction

Agricultural production in India is constrained by number of biotic and abiotic factors. India is a tropical country and has a climate which is conducive for insect pests which are, one of the major constraints in agricultural production, processing and storage. Annual crop losses due to insect pests and diseases in India are estimated to be 18 percent of the agricultural output. Insect pests are widespread in all the agroclimatic zones and large quantities of insecticides are used to control these pests. Indiscriminate use of insecticides, lack of adequate knowledge on proper application techniques and dosages, and frequent use of broad spectrum insecticides are common in India. There is a need to identify suitable alternative methods for the management of insect pests and among them, biological control using viruses, bacteria, fungi and entomopathogenic nematodes is gaining greater attention world over.

Nematode families of Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae attracted most attention as they contain the entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN). Entomopathogenic nematodes are obligate parasites of insects that kill their hosts with the aid of bacteria (Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus) carried in the nematode’s alimentary canal. The lethal obligate insect parasites are ubiquitously distributed without pathogenicity to mammals and beneficial non-target insects, and exempted from registration requirements. Currently there are about 98 valid EPN species belonging to Steinernema (79) and Heterorhabditis (19). Soil surveys conducted in divergent areas of Indian subcontinent have demonstrated high diversity of EPN across seasons, habitats, and geographic regions. There are several target pests in India that can be controlled with entomopathogenic nematodes and several workers have used EPN against cutworms, stem borer, white grubs, etc. under laboratory and field conditions and are compatible with existing IPM programmes.

1. INTRODUCTION

Vegetables differ widely from field crops in their requirements for land preparation and cultural practices because of their differences in their morphologies, growth habit, and socio-economic values. In preparing land for vegetable production, ecological location, mode of cropping, season, crop disposition and the type of vegetables to be grown are taken into consideration.

Clearing: It is often necessary to remove the vegetation cover when a piece of land is to be used for vegetable production. The land clearing methods may involve removing the remains of previous crops and undergrowth, cutting back the woody shrubs and trees and burning them.

Levelling: When the site has been cleared, uneven land may have to be leveled. This facilitates the process of ploughing, harrowing ridging and layout of the site.

Minimum field standards for seed production have been prescribed  for each crop. The major components to be looked into for meeting the field standards are: 
   Preceding crops 
   Isolation distance 
   Number of field inspections 

The minimum proceding crop requirement has been specified to minimize genetic contamination on account of volunteer plants germinating from the left over seeds in the previous season. The disease contamination is also possible from soil borne disease organisms if the previous crop was not certified. The preceding crop requirement would mean that for a prescribed minimum period the same crop or any other contaminating crop should not have been grown on the same field where seed production is to be taken up unless the preceding crop was a seed crop and had met the field/the seed standards.

Many farmer participatory field  experiments were designed and conducted in different states of India having large area under acid soils, with locally available soil ameliorants to study their effect on soil health and crop performance. This work was done during 2000 & 2005 under an ICAR network project on “Soil characterization and resource management of acid soil regions for increasing productivity”. The details of the field locations are presented in table 1.

Thailand This is another unit of the ARRI. It was established in 1979, in Chonburi Province Thailand.

Fieldpea is animportantrabi pulse crop which is highly productive and is grown for food, feed as a vegetable. There are two types of peas grown in India viz., vegetable type in which grains arevery sweet when green and become wrinkled ondrying, and grain type where grains are generally white and round. Green seeds of the grain type are not so sweet as in thecase ofvegetable type. The dry grains areconsumed in various forms such as chat, chhola, dal, vegetable and flour. Green seeds are used as fresh, frozen or canned vegetables. The cultivation of grain type is confined to northern and central parts of the country.

It is high protein (20%) crop with all the essential aminoacids important for normal activity of living organisms. The fractional composition is also favourable the most easily assimilated water soluble protein from mature pea seeds varies from 36 to 87% and in green matter from 65 to 82%. Pea contains 4 mgpro-vitamin A, 300 mgvitamin C, 3 mgB₁, 1.5 mgB₂and 1.2 mgpantothenic acid per 1000 g fresh seed weight. Also, it contains 1.1% fat, 2.2% minerals, 4.5% fibre and 56.5% carbohydrate. It is rich in phosphorus. Green pea and the immature pods of pea are typified by a high level of active lipotropic antisclerotic substances-choline and inositol.Choline deficiency may lead to the development and growth of malignant tumors.
