Ficus carica L, one of the oldest plant species in China, is abound in Shandong, Xinjiang, Jiangsu province. Fig belongs to the family Moraceae and genus Ficus. It is native to Middle East region (West Asia), but now it is widely distributed in Asia and North America.

Cultivars/Varieties: Depending upon the nature of flowers and the method of pollination there are four distinct classes of fig- i) Common fig or Adriatic fig ii) Capri fig, iii) Smyrna fig and iv) San Pedro fig. Kadota, Mission, Adriatic, Brown turkey, Celeste and Conadria are some important varieties of common fig.

Uses

Fig is consumed fresh or dried, preserved, candied or canned. Fresh figs are very delicious, wholesoms and nutritious and used as dessert or for making jam. Due to its highly perishable nature it is dried and marketed. The fruit fresh, or dried is valued for its laxative property. Dried and ground fig can be used as a substitute for coffee.

Fig (Ficus carica  Linn.)  also called ‘Anjeer’ is a nutritive and delicious fruit. Its tree is native to western Asia. It is rich in calories (269), protein, and calcium (higher than milk), iron and fibre content. The small deciduous plants of fig are grown in different parts of the country. Fig has been cultivated since ancient period (4000 BC.) and well known through out the world. It is originated in Middle East and naturalized in many parts of the world. Fig tree plantations cover 426,244 ha. area in the world with an overall yield 1070676million tones. The largest fig growing countries are Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Greece and Algeria (Pasqual and Ferreira, 2007). It is also grown in some parts of Australia, California, New- Zealand and Argentina.

Fig is one of those fruits which are known to mankind since early ages. Legend maintains that the Fig was the “Autumn Fruit’ as revealed by the Greek Goddess, Demeter, and the tree is still held sacred in most parts of the Mediterranean. The fig’s nutritional value is so high that it is often referred to as the ‘Fitness Fruit’. It is a rich source of dietary fiber. It contains a good amount of vitamins and various useful minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, etc. The matured fruit has a tough peel either pure green, green suffused with brown, brown or purple. The interior is a white containing a seed mass bound with jelly-like flesh.

Stem-borer: Batocera rufomaculata, B. rubus, Olenecamptus bilobus:Cerambycidae

These are large dark brown adult beetles that lay eggs in loose bark.  Grubs bore into the trunk and make tunnels in branches and main trunks.  This causes drying and wilting of the branches. Adults of O. bilobus are pale whitish with long serrate antenna.
 
When bark is suspected to have the grubs, try mechanical removal of them. Paste the tree trunk with mud paste containing insecticides like chlorpyriphos or carbaryl. In endemic areas, spray the bark with Carbaryl 4gm /l, Malathion one ml/l, or Chlorpyriphos 2.5ml/l

The common fig, (Ficus carica L.) is a fruit of warm temperate zone. It is one of the oldest fruits known to man and is mentioned by well known Greek writers Homer and Plato. Mention about this fruit is in the earliest chapter of Bible. Figs belong to family Moraceae, which include many tropical fruits and ornamental species. The fruit is known botanically as ‘syconium’ in which the flowers are borne on the inner walls of a hollow receptacle. It is one of the most salt and drought tolerant amongst fruit trees. Fig is a moderate sized deciduous tree in subtropics but performs as evergreen in tropics. Branches are irregular, shoots develop at base of trunk, leaves are very broad, ovate and long stalked. Fruits mostly long stalked, pear shaped with a velvety or glabrous skin, yellow, brown, purplish or black in colour.

Fig along with fruits like date palm, grape (vinifera) and olive was regarded as an important food crop of the ancient civilization that developed in the Mediterranean region. The fig description occurred prominently in number of songs as well as in the mythological and historical events that took place at that time. Fig is thought to be native of southern parts of Arabian peninsula, Italy, Balkan and USSR region. Fig was in cultivation as early as 300 BC and from Arabian peninsula it spread to Turkey, Syria, Iraq and later to many subtropical parts of the western hemisphere.

Fig, Ficus carica grows in both mild temperate climates and in the tropics. In India, it is a minor fruit crop and the commercial cultivation is mainly confined to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu though is slowly spreading to warmer areas of Northern parts of the country. Stem borer, Batocera rufomaculata (Cerambycidae: Coleoptera)

It is commonly known as mango and fig borer. The adults of this pest bear long serrated antennae and are also called as longicorn beetles. The adults get attracted to light. The female cuts the tree bark and lays eggs singly into these cuts, laying a total of up to 200 eggs. On hatching the larvae start to tunnel into the sapwood of the trunk or branches. Filler flowers play an essential role in floral arrangements by providing volume, texture, colour balance and supporting elements around major cut flowers. This chapter presents several commercially useful filler crops and their production technologies. It covers crop establishment, climate, soil, propagation, nutrient management, irrigation, crop regulation, pest and disease management, harvesting, drying and postharvest handling. I. Filtration

Filtration is a process of separation of precipitate from solution. Filtration is used to remove impurities from a solution (or) to isolate a solid.

Filtration may be defined as the separation of a mixture or solution into component parts. The resulting components may be pure or may be solutions or mixtures. In water/wastewater treatment filtration technique is used for removing suspended solids, dissolved solids and organic matter.

Creating and sustaining a healthy aquarium depends on the correct setup and operation of filtration, aeration, and heating systems. These components function collectively to maintain clean water, adequate oxygenation, and consistent temperatures—key elements for the health and comfort of aquatic life.
Filtration systems clear debris, neutralize toxic substances like ammonia and nitrites, and provide a home for beneficial bacteria that fuel the nitrogen cycle. Options include internal filters, canister models, sponge filters, and hang-on-back units, each ideal for different tank capacities and setups.
Aeration equipment—such as air pumps, bubble stones, and diffusers— boosts dissolved oxygen and enhances water movement, which is especially critical in well-stocked or densely planted aquariums and during warmer periods when oxygen tends to deplete. Heaters are essential for tropical tanks, maintaining water temperatures typically between 24–28°C. A stable temperature supports healthy fish metabolism, immune response, and breeding activity. Together, these systems are the core of a functioning aquarium. Choosing the right equipment and maintaining it regularly ensures optimal conditions for both fish and plants.

Aquarium filters come in various types such as internal, external (canister), sponge, and hang-on-back (HOB) filters. Internal filters operate from inside the tank, while external canister filters function outside. Sponge filters work using an air pump that moves water through a foam medium. HOB filters are mounted externally on the tank’s back.

a. Balance Sheets or Net worth Statement

Balance sheet is the list of assets and liabilities owned by a business. It helps to calculate the growth in net worth of the business by calculating the change in assets less the change in liabilities. They represent the financial foundation on which the business is built.

The term ‘balance sheet’ implies some sort of balance as part of the document. That balance represents the relationship between assets on one side, and liabilities on the other, and the basic accounting principle that assets always equal liabilities plus equity. Since it is simply a list of assets owned and debts owed, at a given time, with monetary values attached, we must understand the concepts of assets and liabilities.

Assets are resources owned by or owed to the business such as dairy, equipment, real estate, and notes receivable. Assets are those parts of the business that are owned or controlled. A TTO needs a planned budget of five years to sustain it in the long term. This involves budgeting the infrastructure, manpower, research, and outreach programs. The budgetary needs of a TTO will be based on the size and scope of the TTO and the maturity of the parent institution it caters to. The initial years will be focused on capacity development, the appointment of experts, and the establishment of processes of intellectual property management. The mature TTO will generate income through the returns of the licensing agreements and the collaborative efforts with the industry. Nevertheless, external funding through grants and government schemes plays a vital part, particularly in the initial years. The planned budget ensures long-term stability and development of the TTO.

Investment Appraisal Techniques

A financial evaluation/ appraisal of Project considers the possible compensations of completing the Project against the anticipated expenses. The assessment of the project will rely on several factors, including the Size of the project, time span of project etc. The motivation behind the financial evaluation is to decide if the project is advantageous, contrasting its expenses and its expected normal advantages. An agricultural project is defined as an investment activity where financial resources are expended to create the capital assets with an anticipation of benefits over time. In other words, it is an activity where money is spent to realize the expected returns and requires planning, financing and implementation as a unit. In fact, the whole complex of activities using resources to gain benefits constitute the agricultural projects. Financing the Business

The capital of a business consists of those funds used to start and run the business. Capital may be of two types: fixed and working.

Fixed capital refers to items bought once and used for a long period of time. This includes such things as building, fixtures and equipment. Fixed Capital does not vary with the level of output.

Financial markets fulfil three key functions that keep economies humming. Firstly, they facilitate capital allocation. Imagine a farmer with surplus earnings (savings) from a bountiful harvest (Schar, 2021). In the absence of financial markets, these savings may sit idle. But financial markets connect this farmer with businesses seeking investment capital to expand operations or develop new technologies. According to a 2023 World Bank report, global gross savings reached a staggering $36 trillion, highlighting the immense pool of resources financial markets can tap. This allocation function goes a step further by matching risk tolerance with investment opportunities. A conservative investor seeking stability might favour government bonds, while a risk-tolerant entrepreneur may invest in a promising startup. Financial markets offer instruments to cater to diverse risk appetites, ensuring a healthy balance between stability and growth (Umar et al?, 2022).

Businesses seeking to expand can raise funds through stock offerings, allowing them to build new factories, hire additional staff and develop innovative products. A 2022 study by the International Finance Corporation found that small and medium-sized businesses in emerging markets face a financing gap of over $5 trillion. Financial markets play a vital role in bridging this gap, fostering business expansion, and driving long-term economic prosperity. Furthermore, financial markets enable governments to finance critical infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and public transportation. Abstract
Electricity is one of the most important input factors for the economic development of the country. There is huge and increasing demand of electricity in India and it is continuously increasing with the countries corporate and economic growth. The Indian power sector has responded significantly and made significant progress in reducing the gap between demand and supply. Indian power sector offers one of the highest growth potential to players in this industry. However, this is subject to some challenges like to generate more power and to generate and distribute power efficiently and at minimum cost. The present study covers five selected companies operating in power sector for the financial performance using ratio analysis and ANOVA. Out of selected companies NTPC performance is better than other companies but overall Indian power sector needs to reduce too much dependence on coal and needs to generate more power availability, quality and reliability for successful future and growth of the country.

They first guaranteed that money would be available to start—the business. So, if one wanted to build up a unit for a business, one would undertake market research and then approach the bank. Then activities like product development, ordering equipment, determining the site, acquiring land for the facility, what government policies are applicable etc., were considered. Common Exotic and Indian Dog Breeds

India is home to a rich diversity of dog breeds both indigenous and exotic, each with unique traits suited to different environments and lifestyles. Among the exotic dog breeds that have gained popularity in India are the Labrador retriever, Golden Retriever, Beagle and German shepherd. These breeds often imported and are known for their friendly nature, intelligence and trainability. Labradors and Golden Retrievers are particularly famous for their loyalty and gentleness, making them excellent family pets. The Beagle, with its keen sense of smell and compact size, is a favourite among urban dwellers, while the German shepherd is valued for its protective instincts and versatility in roles like police work, guard duties and service tasks.

In contrast, Indian dog breeds, many of which are lesser-known globally, are uniquely adapted to the country's diverse climate and conditions. The Indian Pariah Dog is one of the oldest and most resilient breeds, found naturally across the country. Known for its strong immune system, minimal grooming needs and intelligence, the Indian Pariah is an exceptional companion that thrives with minimal human intervention. Another indigenous breed is the Rajapalayam, a sighthound from Tamil Nadu, historically used for hunting boar and protecting livestock. With its striking white coat and regal demeanour, the Rajapalayam is revered for its loyalty and bravery. The Mudhol Hound/ Caravan Hound, from the Deccan Plateau region (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu of India), is another notable Indian breed, known for its speed, agility and endurance, often used in hunting and guarding. Chippiparai, another hound from Tamil Nadu, has a sleek body designed for speed and was historically favoured by royalty for hunting small game. The Kanni, also native to Tamil Nadu, is a close relative of the Chippiparai and is recognized for its grace and loyalty, often kept as a companion dog.

Any organization which is in the process of scaling heights should find job motivation for its personnel. The job motivation of personnel in any organization should support the personnel and improve productivity and services. The chapter gives accounts of the significant findings of the study, followed by tenability of hypotheses and further areas of research in the related areas, suggestions and conclusion. The present study has been undertaken to find out the job motivation of LIS professionals working in Kerala's major eight state universities. The data of the study were collected from 266 (two hundred and sixty-six) Library and Information Science professionals. The study's objectives are examined with reference to the analysis of data gathered through questionnaires and realized.

The present study investigated the Quality of Work Life (QWL) of Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals working in Kerala’s eight prominent state universities. The data of the study were collected from the two hundred and sixty-six 266 regular qualified LIS professionals. 

Shrimp culture is slowly emerging as one of the major and fastest growing food production sector in the world. High demand in the international market encouraged many developing countries to grow shrimp in their coastal areas. Many countries including India earn sizable foreign exchanges by exporting both shrimp and frozen shrimp. International institutions like the World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) etc. have also encouraged production of shrimp that fetch huge returns on investment within a short period of time. Indigent coastal people in India have been farming fish for hundreds of years. The warm climate, accessibility to coast, saline water and relatively low wage rate provides a comparative advantage for shrimp cultivation. Commercial shrimp farming developed in India on account of the government’s policy to promote shrimp culture in view of its potential to utilise the vast saline tracts along the coastline and to provide employment opportunities to coastal rural population. After the liberalization, development of shrimp culture gained greater momentum in the country. Individual entrepreneurs were also encouraged to take up shrimp farming with both financial and technical support from the government.

‘Shrimp’ which is an aquatic organism inhabiting the sea, estuaries and backwaters remained the backbone of Indian marine products exports. Shrimp is a protein-rich food with universal taste. Shrimp farming is a short duration activity and therefore, provides quick return on investment. It also provides gainful employment opportunities to the rural poor in the remote coastal areas. The value of shrimp exported in 2011-12 from India was estimated at about Rs. 8175.26 crores (US$ 1741.20 million). According to an estimate made by MPEDA, one hectare of shrimp culture operation can provide direct employment to atleast two persons and can also generate indirect employment to the extent of 1100 man-days.

Shrimp culture has a long tradition in India that began with the tidal stocking of shrimp in paddy fields and lagoons and holding them until harvest. More intensive forms of shrimp farming developed rapidly during the 1990’s. As was the case in many other nations in Asia, the development of shrimp farming in India took place without planning and regulation. This resulted in a variety of environmental problems and social conflicts. Although India has benefited from rising foreign exchange earnings, the conflict of coastal communities with shrimp farming has prompted a heated debate over the relevance of aquaculture in coastal ecosystem. Questions have been raised on its sustainability in the long run and some people also accused that this culture has disturbed the social harmony and has raised the inequality level in the rural areas.

This chapter introduces the microscopic and molecular structure of wool fibres and explains how structure determines their physical behaviour. It examines the cuticle, cortex and medulla and discusses the role of overlapping cuticle scales in felting. The bilateral organization of the cortex and the relationship between ortho-cortex and para-cortex are related to crimp formation. The chapter also explains the filament-matrix organization of keratin and its importance for the mechanical properties of wool.

Morphology based nematode taxonomy and biodiversity studies have historically challenged most biologists. In the past few decades, there have been efforts to integrate molecular methods and digital 3D image-capturing technology in nematode taxonomy, the former to enhance the accuracy of identification of such a taxonomically challenging group and the latter to communicate morphological data. While the employment of these two methods is growing in recent taxonomic, biodiversity and biogeographic studies, a movement to abandon traditional phenotypic identification methods altogether has emerged (Eyualem Abebe et al?, 2011). Proponents try to justify this trend by citing the challenging gap between the high estimated number of undescribed species and the limited ability of traditional taxonomy to accomplish the task of documenting such diversity.

Aquaculture is the culture of aquatic organisms per unit water area per unit time for maximum profit. The economically important finfishes and shellfishes, whose body physiology is adjustable to varied environmental conditions, are considered as aquaculture candidate species. So, an overall knowledge on the physiology of such species is required to improve the culture practices.

1.1. Finfish

A fish may be defined as a vertebrate, adapted for a purely aquatic life, propelling and balancing itself by means of fins, and obtaining oxygen  (O2) from the water for survival and life processes. As the fishes have fins, they are also known as finfishes. Fish describes a life from rather than a taxonomic group. They share certain features with other vertebrates. These are gill slits, a notochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord and tail. In number of individuals, and may be also in number of species, fishes are presently superior to other vertebrates, including mammals. There are 20,000 different species of fishes. Fishes form largest group of vertebrates, Pisces. The various types of fishes differ so much in shape, color and size that it is difficult to believe they all belong to the same group of animals. Fish in general are cold-blooded and adjusted either to freshwater, brackishwater or marine environment.

The millets are a group of highly variable small seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for both human food and fodder. These are important crops in semi-arid and tropical regions of the world (in particular in Afro-Asian countries) due to their resistance to pests and diseases, short growing season and productivity under heat and drought conditions. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.) is a small seeded annual cereal which belongs to the grass family, Poaceae. 

1. Introduction Millets have gained popularity as staple foods worldwide, particularly in regions with hot and humid climates. These crops are often cultivated in marginal areas where major grains struggle to yield significant harvests (Thapliyal and Singh, 2015). One such millet is finger millet (Eleusine coracana), native to Ethiopia, and widely grown in Africa and India, where it is known by various names, including ragi and mandua (Table 1). In many developing countries, finger millet serves as a staple for a substantial portion of the population, especially those belonging to lower economic strata, providing essential nutrients (Chandra et al., 2016).

Finger millet (Ragi/ Mandua) is the principal small millet grown in South Asia. It is believed to be native of India (De condole, 1886) but according to Vavilov (1926) it originated in Abyssinia.

Diagnostic Symptoms
• Crop is susceptible to the disease during all stages of its growth, from seedling to grain formation stage.
• In young seedlings, lesions are generally of spindle shaped, however lesions of different sizes may also be observed.
• In the beginning the spots have yellowish margin and grayish centre. Later, the centres become whitish grey and disintegrate.
• Lesions are isolated in the beginning and afterwards they may soon coalesce. The distal portion of the leaves beyond the lesions may hang and drop off.
• In older plants, the disease appears on leaf blades with typical spindle shaped spots.
• Under congenial conditions, such spots enlarge, coalesce and form bigger lesions.
• Lesions are like those on the seedlings and are about 0.3-0.5 cm in breadth and 1-2 cm in length. Apices of the infected leaves beyond the lesions hang down and sometimes break.
• Stem infection causes blackening of the nodal region, penetrating into the tissues.

1.1 Introduction Millets were one of the first crops to be domesticated by mankind in Asia and Africa which later spread across the globe as critical food sources to the evolving civilizations. The earliest evidence of millets has been found in the Indus civilization around 3000 BC. Millets are a collective group of small-seeded annual grasses that are grown as grain crops, primarily on marginal land in dry areas of temperate, sub-tropical and tropical regions (FAO). However, due to the popularity of the cereal crops like wheat, rice and maize; millets have lost dominion and have become an underutilized crop in last few decades. Millets have the potential to be the crop of the future, as our major crops have reached yield plateau, also changing climate has introduced several new biotic and abiotic stresses to the major crops, so to feed the ever-growing population we need to shift towards other potential crops. India is the largest producer of millet as it contributes about 41% of the total millet production of the world (APEDA, 2020).

Stocking fingerlings in grow-out ponds increases survival rates, cut-down culture duration, better feed management and reduce risk-factors on account of natural as well disease occurrence. In pond culture, good amount of fry-size seed suffer predation from enemies such as snakes, birds and predator fishes, if any and mortalities due to disease occurrence as smaller size fish is more vulnerable. However, fingerling stocking reduces predation loss to a greater extent, increase survivals, allow better feed management and highe production. This is truer with carnivorous fishes and particularly those observe cannibalism. Qin and Fast (1996) stated that the rate of cannibalism is higher in small size (TL) predators than the larger in case of striped murrel, so stocking large size fingerling in culture ponds reduces chances of ICC and hence recommended for grow-out production.

7.1 Traditional Methods of Fingerling Rearing

Wee (1981) has defined traditional system of murrel farming in Thailand in which seed of murrel was procured from wild resources and raised to large fingerling size before stocking. Two type of practices being used to raise fingerlings. In the first one, the pond(s) designated for fingerling production are stocked with brooders of SFs so they could spawn in the stocking pond(s) few days before the stocking of striped murrel fry and could directly feed upon the juvenile SFs. In second system, the fingerlings were reared to accept small-size fish (SF) along with rice bran to cut down cost of feeding on production of fingerling. In recent, more systematic approaches have been made to wean the seed collected from the wild resources on inert diets totally. The protocol adopted for weaning the fingerling on inert diet includes initial feeding with cut pieces of SFs and then gradual supplementation of inert diet till fingerlings start relishing inert diet completely.

ABSTRACT

Exploitation of genetic resistance available in the local germplasm provides a rational solution to most deadly purple blotch disease problem associated with onion production in India. Keeping this in view, efforts have been made to characterize the identified sources of resistance available in the local germplasm. Three lines namely, MS-65-268, PBR-287 and Arka Kalyan-704 that were identified as resistant after screening, were subjected to Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis for their precise identification and estimation of genetic relationship among them. Highly susceptible variety Arka Niketan was also included in the study for better interpretation. A total of 160 ten- mer random primers were used in the analysis, out of which, 41 exhibited polymorphism among the accessions. Out of these DNA profile with 5 primers namely, OPB02, OPB13, OPC09, OPC12 and OPF08 distinguished the three resistant accessions clearly from the susceptible one. On an average of 2.65 polymorphic, 11.65 monomorphic and 14.3 total bands were produced per primer. The amplified PCR products were of the range from 300 bp to 2 kbp and were consistent, unambiguous and repeatable. Further genetic dissimilarity analysis based on the Ward’s method using minimum variance algorithm and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of these genotypes using the data generated from RAPD markers revealed high genetic diversity. Dendrogram clustered these four genotypes into two main clusters containing two each. PCA also confirmed high genetic dissimilarity. The least genetic dissimilarity (40.0%) was between PBR-287 and MS-65-268 where as the maximum (65.0%) was found between genotypes Arka Niketan-709 and MS-65-268.

Small amplitude wave theory was based on the premise that motions are sufficiently small to allow the free surface boundary condition to be linearized. In applied mathematics the solution of problem generally consists of numbers which satisfy some kind of equation which are generally specified by numbers. But in practice it is found that these equations not always possible to express numerically or in exact decimal representative of the solution. Numerical methods are very important tools to provide practical methods for calculating the solutions of applied mathematics to a desired degree of accuracy. The wide use of electronic computers for solving problems in the fields of engineering, scientific, industry etc that further enhanced the scope of numerical methods.

The calculus of finite differences deals with the changes in the values of the function (dependent variable) due to changes in the independent variables. Again through this the relation of the values of the function is studied whenever the independent variable changes by finite jumps whether equal or unequal.

First Aid in Orthopaedic Patient

Immediately transfer the animal to a safety place.

The place should be well settled, well ventilated, neat and clean.

If the fracture site is limb and it is a simple fracture, immediately immobilize the animal with soft cotton padding and plastic scale placed at four sites.

If the fracture site is limb and it is a compound fracture, cover the fractured site v/ith th’ck padded clean cotton cloth and few bamboo splint placed on four sides to keep limb straight.

Control the bleeding, if bleeding occurs at time of covering of fractured site with thick padded clean cotton cloth.

If the fracture site is vertebral column, it is better not to lift the patient vigorously.

A patient with vertebral column fracture shouldn’t be allowed for standing.
