This chapter is an extensive survey of all past studies relevant to the field of investigation which gives knowledge of what others have found out in the related field of study. In any scientific investigation or research, a comprehensive presentation of the review of literature is a statutory requirement. Its main functions are to develop a better understanding of the problem to be investigated, delineate a new area of study and avoid unnecessary duplication, decide on the tools and techniques to be adopted including developing some new ones, also to relate the present study with the previous ones by finding out the areas of agreement and disagreement.

The review of literature of the present study is based on the major concepts related to the field of investigation. As direct references on the entire item are not in abundance, certain specific references along with some indirect references have been incorporated in this chapter for the purpose of meaningful use.

Extension organizations are highly sociable organizations with a definite purpose of using the grass root principle and democratic leadership in bringing transience in the organization and society. In this direction the communication styles most suited for these extension functionaries in bringing these transitions need to be studied and understood and developed for effective functioning of these organizations as nucleus of change in transforming societies for development

Learning to identify the different communication styles - and recognizing which one we use most often in our daily interactions with friends, family and colleagues - is essential if we want to develop effective, assertive communication skills. But how can we tell the difference between the styles, and is there a time and place for each one in certain situations?

Being assertive means respecting yourself and other people. It is the ability to clearly express your thoughts and feelings through open, honest and direct communication.

Becoming more assertive does not mean that you will always get what you want - but, it can help you achieve a compromise. And even if you don’t get the outcome you want, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you handled the situation well, and that there are no ill feelings between you and the other person or people involved in the discussion.

Abstract

Extension and Advisory Services (EAS) are delivered by millions of extension professionals representing the public, private and civil society located across the globe and have been helping in addressing farmers’ needs over the years. However, public sector has been a major agency dealing with EAS in India and is facing several challenges and constraints to fulfill the demands of farmers on timely basis. The challenge today is to change the organizational culture to incorporate innovation as a core value and to institutionalize the emerging paradigms. Further, different strategies and measures need to be taken to ensure timely and quality EAS by reorienting extension priorities. This paper has highlighted on strengthening extension and feedback mechanism, improving research- extension linkages, capacity building, public-private partnership (PPP), developing infrastructure, mass media support and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) etc. to improve the efficiency as the time demands. The paper concludes that reorienting extension priorities is very essential with a vast network of various stakeholders by adapting effective approaches like utilization of social media, human resource development, PPP, farmer groups etc. during and post pandemic scenario. Further, empirical efforts are also needed to develop reliable, location-specific, participatory, gender-sensitive and inexpensive extension methodologies and materials to meet the emerging demands. Further, developing countries like India have to invest in terms of various resources like financial, human resource etc. for promoting higher productivity and sustainability through EAS.

Being a Health Extension Practitioner, one should have a clear idea regarding some fundamental aspects like the nature of health, health education, health promotion and some related concepts. This will help them to understand the social, psychological and physical components of health and enable them to be a better health educator by considering these basic ideas while planning and carrying out a health education session.

Definition & concepts of health

As a Health Extension Practitioner, one’s main target will be to prevent health problems in a community rather than to treat them. Malaria, diarrheal diseases, tuberculosis, pneumonia, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse and many harmful traditional practices are among the different health problems we generally see within our community setting.

Introduction

Agricultural and Animal husbandry extension continues to be in transition worldwide. Governments and international agencies are advancing structural, financial and managerial reforms to improve extension. Decentralization, pluralism, cost sharing, cost recovery, participation of stakeholders in development initiatives and the decisions and resources that affect them - these are some of the elements in extension’s current transition.

Public sector extension was severely attacked in the 1980s for not being relevant, for insufficient impact, for not being adequately effective, for not being efficient and, sometimes, for not pursuing programmes that foster equity. In the context of meeting the holistic needs of increasing agricultural production in a sustainable manner in India, agricultural extension has a crucial role to play. Reforms in the system envisaged an extension service which is more broad-based and holistic in content and scope and beyond agricultural technology transfer.

Pure-breeding

Mating purebred individuals of the same breed. The progeny share the same genetic make-up. The primary goal of pure-breeding is to identify and propagate superior genes for use in commercial production, primarily through crossbreeding programmes, as well as to identify and propagate better females for the preservation of precious genetic material. Therefore, crossbreeding will be futile unless superior purebred individuals are used.

Pig Nutrition

Proper feed is necessary for development, body maintenance, and the production of meat and milk. When correctly prepared, one can use less expensive locally available feeds that are nutritionally sufficient. Pigs can be fed effectively with leftovers from a family’s kitchen. Pig nutritional needs can be divided into six sections. Examples include water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.

Pigs are omnivorous, which means they can consume both meat and plants. Pigs’ digestive systems can also manage roughage-rich diets. Pig must drink plenty of clean, fresh water every day. Pigs will consume practically anything. They will consume grass and other plants. They can be kept in a safe field where they will consume all vegetation and grass. The pig will burrow into the ground and consume both the roots and the green parts of plants. A pig with a nose ring cannot root plants. Pigs will develop and fatten more quickly if fed concentrate feed. Grain meal that has been thoroughly pulverised is a good feed for pig.

Pigs can also be fed leftover veggies and scraps from the kitchen. Before feeding scraps to the pig, household scraps, especially those containing meat, must be well prepared. The pig requires constant access to fresh, clean water. Each day, a sow with young requires 20 to 30 litres of water.

Gametogenesis

Male Gametogenesis: Male gametogenesis is the formation of male gametes and it occurs in the anthers. The end products of meiosis in higher plants are four microspores. Two mitotic divisions occur in microspores. The first division produces a tube nucleus and a generative nucleus. The second mitotic division occurs only in the generative nucleus resulting into production of two sperm cells (Fig. 3.1). The microspore is haploid (n) and develops into pollen grain in the anther, and the pollen grain further develops into a pollen tube on the stigma and in the style. The pollen tube, when it reaches the embryo sac is the fully developed male gametophyte and is trinucleate, two sperm cells and one tube nucleus.

Reproduction by asexual means is common among higher plants. The best known means of asexual reproduction are by corms, bulbs, rhizomes, stolons, or other vegetative organs. Plants normally propagated in agricultural practice by these means or by budding or grafting include nearly all fruit and nut trees, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries, grapes, pineapples, almost all ornamental shrubs and trees and a few field crops such as sugar cane, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Asexually or clonally propagated plants produce genetically identical progeny. Clones are identical copies of a genotype. Together, they are phenotypically homogeneous. However, individually, they are highly heterozygous and segregate widely upon sexual reproduction. This is not unexpected, because the types selected as commercial cultivars are likely to be vigorous ones, and a positive correlation exists between vigour and heterozygosity in most species.

6.1 Introduction

It is an important vegetable in European countries. It got its name from the capital city of Belgium since it has been grown around Brussels for hundreds of years. From Belgium it has been introduced to England (1810). Some parts of Long Island in New York are also well known for Brussels Sprout production. In India, it is widely grown in Kodai kanal and Nilgiris hills of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Exact statistics regarding area, production and productivity are not available. It is a cool, moisture loving and frost resistant biennial, with axillary buds produced in the leaf axils during the first year of growth and a seed head is produced in the second year of growth. Edible part is swollen axillary bud (sprouts or buttons or mini cabbage). 

21.1 Introduction

Globe artichoke, commonly known as artichoke, is a perennial crop grown for its flower buds. It has thistle like plants. The above ground portion dies each year during winter and again emerges in spring. It is generally propagated by means of suckers or off shoots from the old root stocks and also by dividing the old crown into pieces with a portion of the stem. The buds are harvested before they become loose and fibrous. It is very nutritious as it contains appreciable quantities of proteins, carbohydrates and minerals. It is a herbaceous perennial in which the globular immature flower heads or buds and the edible bracts are used as vegetable.

The wide range of agro-climatic and agro-ecological situations that prevail in the country supports cultivation of a variety of horticultural crops. The horticultural sector in the country is experiencing a phenomenal growth as far as increase in area, production and productivity are concerned. However, there is a lot of opportunities for enhancing productivity, post- harvest processing, value addition, hi-tech horticulture and precision farming etc. Hence, it will be enterprising to develop this sector, especially among the marginal and small farmers, so that that it will help them doubling their income from farm sector.

A value chain is a series of consecutive steps that go into the creation of a finished product, from its initial design to its arrival at a customer’s door. The chain identifies each step in the process at which value is added, including the sourcing, manufacturing, and marketing stages of its production. A company conducts a value-chain analysis by evaluating the detailed procedures involved in each step of its business. The purpose of a value-chain analysis is to increase production efficiency so that a company can deliver maximum value for the least possible cost.

3.1. Theoretical background of FPOs

Farmers Producer Organization is a people based organization having both the outlook of cooperation and business. In this context the theories of collective action, group formation, social learning cooperation etc are very much pertinent here.

3.1.1 Collective action

Collective action is visible in FPCs. Collective action is defined as action taken mutually by a group of people to augment their status and achieve a common goal. Over the past two decades analytic philosophers have been investigating the nature of collective action in the sense of acting together.

4.1. Registration Procedure

Registering a Producer Company follows a process similar to that of a Private Limited Company. The first step involves obtaining a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and Director Identification Number (DIN) for the proposed directors of the company. Following this, an application for name reservation is submitted to the relevant Registrar of Companies (ROC). It’s mandatory for the name of a producer company to end with the words “Producer Limited Company” as per the Act. Once the suggested name is approved, an application for incorporation of the Producer Company is filed in the prescribed format. The Registrar reviews the application and accompanying documents, and if satisfied, approves and issues a Certificate of Incorporation.

Introduction

Development of feeding strategies that are more efficient and more eco-friendly by reducing waste is one of the key priorities in poultry production today. Thus, there is a focus on reduction of the crude protein content in a diet fortified with adequate amounts of currently available free amino acids (e.g. L-Lys, DL-Met, L-Thr, L-Val and L-Trp) in order to optimize protein utilization efficiency while maintaining production performance and reducing nitrogen excretion in chicken. Baker et al (1978) reported that animals do not need dietary protein to provide amino acids. Since, then numerous studies have been conducted to study amino acid requirement of poultry. They are components of tissue proteins and provision at insufficient levels leads to reduced protein synthesis. Provision of the different essential amino acids is therefore a prerequisite for maintaining optimal rates of protein synthesis. However, optimizing amino acid nutrition requires consideration of the different functions of amino acids, which are recognized to have several significant influences. Amino acids are precursors of important molecules.

During last four decade poultry has taken giant step and become corporate sector with double digit growth. Especially in India poultry play pivotal role in fight against malnutrition, unemployment and also contributing in women empowerment. In poultry production the biggest single expense is of feed, which accounting for 70% of total production cost per bird (Kumar et al., 2011). So, obviously more Research and Development focus and new innovative technology need to be implemented in poultry nutrition area. Since last 40 years, feed enzymes have played a major part in helping radically to improve the efficiency of meat and egg production by changing the nutritional profile of feed ingredients. 

Introduction

Feeding cost and the price of poultry products have recently increased due to increasing competition between humans and animals for the same feed resources having different valuable nutrients. As you know that like other living creatures, the birds do need several nutrients in their diets to maintain optimum body growth, normal health and maximum production of edible egg and meat. Accordingly the efforts should always be made to feed poultry with a diet adequately balanced with almost all essential nutrients so that they do perform efficiently within a normal physiological form.

Introduction

The term ‘mycotoxin’ coined in 1962 in the aftermath of death of about 1,00,000 turkey poults in London, due to “Turkey X disease” in 1960, linked to a peanut meal contaminated with aflatoxins. Now, about 300 to 400 toxic fungal metabolites have been identified as mycotoxins, of which some are capable of inflicting deleterious effects to animal and avian health. The most commonly affected feedstuffs are cereals (maize, sorghum, barley, wheat, and rice meal), oilseeds (groundnuts) and oilseed meals (cottonseed meal). There are three major genera of fungi that produce mycotoxins: Aspergilius, Fusarium and Penicillium (Bennett and Klich, 2003). Among these, the Aspergillus species are of much concern as they are responsible for the production of aflatoxins, the most potent fungal toxin causing aflatoxicoses that have detrimental effects on living beings (Barret, 2000).

Limited feed supply and poor quality of the available feeds are the major constraints for optimal livestock and poultry productivity in all developing nations like India. Most of the regions in India are characterized by irregular rainfall and thus livestock have to survive on persistent shortage of feed resources of low nutritive value for most part of the year. The poultry industry is an important livestock sub-sector in India with a potential to solve the problem of malnutrition, unemployment and augmenting rural economy. However, high feed cost decreases animal production which contributes to lower animal protein availability for human consumption. This vicious cycle of low productivity and intake of animal protein has been maintained and sustained by the scarcity of feedstuff.

Introduction

Nutrients are essential substances present in different types of foods which perform various life-sustaining functions in the body. They are required for growth, maintenance and the reproductive process. Poultry require more than 40 such nutrients, which are classified into six major groups - water, carbohydrates, protein (amino acids), fats, minerals and vitamins. Poultry diets must be formulated to provide all these essential nutrients as per the bird’s requirement to achieve optimum growth and production. Several ingredients including cereal grains, cereal by-products, fats, plant protein sources, animal by-products, vitamin and mineral supplements, crystalline amino acids and feed additives are commonly used to prepare poultry diets. Further, specialist areas such as immuno-nutrition are rapidly gaining attention due to continued advancement in the field of poultry nutrition (Beski et al., 2015).

7.1 Introduction

A biodiesel fuel is an environmentally friendly, renewable, biodegradable fuel that is produced at domestic facilities from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled grease from restaurants. In accordance with the Renewable Fuel Standard, biodiesel meets the requirements for biomass-based diesel as well as the requirements for advanced biofuels as a whole. Biodiesel is distinct from renewable diesel, also known as “green diesel.” In its pure, unblended form, biodiesel is also known as B100 or neat biodiesel. Biodiesel is used to fuel compression-ignition engines in the same way as petroleum diesel. Alternatively, biodiesel is a liquid biofuel that can be used in diesel engines alone or blended with diesel oil. The fuel is obtained through the chemical conversion of vegetable oils or animal fats combined with alcohol.

10.1 Introduction

As one ofthe oldest and most widely used renewable energy sources, hydropower generates electricity by using the natural flow of flowing water. Streams and rivers have been used for producing mechanical energy for thousands of years. Hydroelectric power plants are located near or on water sources since they derive their power from flowing water. The amount of energy that can be released in moving water depends on the volume of the water flowing and the elevation change from one point to another, often called head. Generally, hydropower plants can produce more electricity when there is more water flow and a higher head. 

People worldwide are getting affected by the changing climate and associated natural disasters. These climate changes affect both genders differently. Changing climate is not often thought of as an issue related to gender, yet it is increasingly evident that women are more affected by its impacts. Women of all ages are more vulnerable due to persistent cultural norms and low socioeconomic status. Women’s domestic roles often make them inconsistent users of nature-based resources such as firewood, water, and forest products. When these resources become scarcer, they experience an increased work burden. This is proved by many researchers that women in developing countries share the primary responsibility of providing basic needs like food (to feed) and water for their families; this is the cause behind their dependency on natural resources.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is generally a policy to assess its impact on society and estimate its societal responsibilities. The CSR plan of any organization ensures that it complies with government norms, their investments in respect of growth, development of weaker sections and the environment. CSR’s primary requisite should be sustainable, involving interventions that an organization can justify without negatively affecting its profit goals.

Rural development is transforming the lives of the rural people by creating awareness and mobilizing the people for self-help and pastoral help. Rural development is not new in India, where more than 70% of the people live in villages, their primary source of livelihood being agriculture, animal husbandry etc. Any area’s development initially occurs when changes happen in the home and family. Rural development focuses on the holistic development of the rural population by helping them to recognize their needs & interests and guiding them to meet them. This would result in personal, social, economic, and spiritual development.

The word ‘Democracy’ is derived from the Greek roots ‘demos’ meaning the people and ‘kratos’ meaning authority i.e. in democracy, all authority originates from the people. Decentralisation means distribution of functions and powers from a central authority to regional and local authorities. Democratic Decentralisation in the present context means that the Government which has derived its authority from the people, redistributes it to some extent to the people, for decision and action at the local level. This is popularly known as PANCHAYATI RAJ in India. It was thought that Panchayati Raj would emerge as a system of democratic local self- Government, discharging developmental municipal and ultimately, regulatory functions.

National Rural Employment Programme (NREP)

The NREP was launched in October, 1980 and became a regular Plan programme from April, 1981. The programme was expected to generate additional gainful employment in the rural areas, to the extent of 300-400 million mandays per annum, create durable community assets, and improve nutritional status and living standards of the poor.

An outlay of Rs. 1620 crores was provided under this Programme, out of which the outlay from 1980-81 onwards (Rs. 1280 crores) was to be shared equally between the Centre and the States.

Adoption

Adoption is a decision to make full use of an innovation as the best course of action available.

Steps in adoption process

Ryan and Gross (1943) were probably the first to recognize that the adoption of a new idea consisted of stages. They distinguished between awareness of hybrid seed cron conviction of its usefulness, trial acceptance and complete adoption of the innovation.

Adoption is essentially a decision making process. According to Johnson and Haver (1955), decision making involves the following steps.

Nursery is an art of raising and selling seedlings, saplings, and other planting materials for use in gardens and orchards. The availability of true to type, healthy and high quality planting materials is a must for a successful and profitable fruit production. “Scion block” refers to trees planted to provide scion wood for propagating nursery stock, whereas “seed block” refers to the planting of registered seed trees that will provide seeding rootstock for propagating certified nursery stock. It consists of planting self-rooted mother trees/mother stools with the objective of providing vegetatively propagated (clonal) rootstock for the multiplication of certified nursery stock.

It is generally observed that N, P and Zn content in soil decreases with increasing soil salinity. Nutrient imbalances created by continuous use of chemical fertilizers, particularly nitrogenous fertilizer alone, combined with sub optimal rates of other nutrients or total omission of other nutrients are the primary causes for unsustainable yields of crops in saline soil. A sustainable approach for nutrient management in salt affected soils should therefore include balanced use of organic, inorganic and biological sources of nutrients (Bandyopadhyay and Rao, 2001). Organic amendments are known to facilitate the reclamation of sodic soils and better nutrition of crops (Anand swarup, 1992).

Secondary nutrients

Secondary nutrients includes Calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Crop plants requires secondary nutrients in moderate quantity for crop growth and yield. Their requirement by plant is less than the macro nutrients. Sulphur and Magnesium requirement of crops are very similar to the Phosphorus needs. Calcium is required in higher amount than Phosphorus. Calcium and magnesium are mostly deficient in acid and alkali soils. In India S deficiencies are found in almost 40 per cent of the cultivated soil. Under intensive cropping system, the use of higher amount of nitrogenous fertilizer without secondary and micro nutrients and lesser use of organic manures are the major reason for the secondary and micro nutrient deficiency in soil.

9.1 Introduction

In the preceeding chapter, we have studied the estimation part of statistical decision (inference) infered about the parameters of the population on the basis of information available in the sample observations drawn from the parent population under study. In the present chapter we discuss the problems related with the tests of statistical hypothesis and its significance about the population parameters under study. For understanding of the subject matter considered in this chapter, very clearly and easily, one must be familier with the statistical terminologies used in the subject matter. Hence we discuss the various notable terminologies with some suitable examples in a simple way for better understanding.

Review of literature helps a scholar describing and citing related works to justify the topic and objectives set in the thesis work. This is a splendid scholastic exercise to vindicate and validate the reasons and output of the research work undertaken.

Source of risk

Boris and Radivoj (2017) reveal that agricultural risk and uncertainty come from many different places, but they can be categorized into five management-related categories: production and technology, prices and the market, finance, legislation, and employees.

Mushrooming population, subsiding agricultural resources; land and water, people’s concern towards quality of vegetable s/food and changing climate throws several challenges for vegetable production. Conventional management and crop improvement strategies alone can no longer sustain the nation’s as well as global demand. So there is an urgent need to adopt modern biotechnological methods which are multidisciplinary where a large number of tools and elements of conventional breeding technique, genetic engineering, molecular biology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics and biochemistry are utilized and integrated. Biotechnological tools provide three major aspects of genetic improvement viz, application of tissue culture, molecular breeding or marker assisted breeding and genetic engineering.

Healthy body maintains a healthy mind. Fruits and vegetables are said to be protective food as they provide proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, roughages, organic acids, enzymes and energy for normal growth and sustenance of physiological activities of human beings. Fruits and vegetables provide palatability, taste and improve appetite. It also provides fiber to prevent constipation. They reduce the ill-effect of acids produced during digestion of proteins and fatty acids. Thus, they protect the human body from various deficiency disorders.

Important fact is that most of the Indians are vegetarians. The incorporation of fruits and vegetables in daily diet is essential as body building elements and calorie yielding foods for good health. Comparatively fruits and vegetables are the cheapest source of natural nutritive foods and are an important component of a balanced diet Balanced diet is a diet which contains body building elements and calorie yielding foods in an appropriate proportion for normal growth and well-being of a person. According to ICMR, New Delhi; 120 g fruits and 280-300 g vegetables should be consumed per day per capita. Vegetables include 80-100 g of leafy vegetables, 100-125 g of tubers as energy source and remaining as other vegetables.

The plant growth regulators are the organic compounds other than the nutrients, which accelerate, inhibit or modify the various physiological processes in the plant system, when applied at low concentration. These growth regulators are readily absorbed and move rapidly in the tissues, when applied to the plant system and regulate its life processes in some beneficial ways to enhance the yield and improve the quality of the fruits.

The word hormone is derived from Greek, meaning set in motion. The five major phytohormones are auxins (indole-3-acetic acid and its derivatives), gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid and ethylene. The key difference between plant hormones and plant growth regulators is that plant hormones are natural, while plant growth regulators are artificially synthesized and are applied to plants. Plant hormones are also called phytohormones. Plant hormones are the organic chemicals, which are synthesized by plants themselves naturally during the metabolic processes.These are synthesized at the given site and translocated to the site of action.

India has a wide agroclimatic range i.e. temperate, subtropical and tropical, enabling to achieve horticulture diversification. India is second in fruit and vegetable production at global level. The percentage share of horticulture output in agriculture has become 33%, (Horti statistics, 2018). However, productivity in most of the horticulture commodities is very low below world productivity, as we have not concentrated intensively on some major aspects to achieve competitiveness in horticulture for expansion in international trade.

India has potential to lead the world in horticulture. Horticulture is mostly concerned in different aspects of human beings such as provision of nutritious food to achieve a balanced diet; rural employment, integral part of rainfed and dry land areas, wealth generation through the activities of production, processing, marketing, servicing, and related sectors, economically important in export related activities and associated with all the elements of the supply chain etc.

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) crop belongs to the family Apiaceae and having diploid chromosome number 2n =14. It is also known as Jeera in Hindi. This crop is originated from Mediterranean region. It is an erect or sub erect, glabrous annual herb which grows to a height of 30-50cm. The leaves are alternate, compound and green, the blade consists of three slender filiform leaflets. The inflorescence is a compound umbel with white or pinkish flowers (Verma et al., 2018a). The typical pleasant aroma of the seeds is due to their essential oil and the main constituent in essential oil is cuminaldehyde. It is mainly cultivated in arid and semi arid parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The total area is about 12 lakh hectare with the production of about 8.5 lakh tons and total export of cumin is worth of more than Rs. 4200 crore during 2020-21 (Fig. 1 & 2).

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is a popular seed spice crop, used for dual purpose seed and leaves both. Since ancient times, coriander leaves have been used in the production of many popular Asian and East European foods. It improves the taste and flavor of vegetable, chicken, fish, and meat dishes when combined with other kitchen herbs and spices. Blending of green coriander leaves with other spice crops is used to make chatni (paste) which is a good appetizer, flavour enhancer and rich source of medicinal properties of coriander. The green leaves of coriander are a rich source of minerals like calcium, phosphorus and iron as well as vitamin A, C, riboflavin and folic acid. Coriander is one of the few plants which can be termed both as herb and spice, the seeds being used as spices (coriander) and leaves are widely used as herbs (cilantro). The green leaves of this herb contain 160 mg/100 g vitamin C, 12 mg/100 g vitamin A and 87.9% moisture, 3.3% protein, 0.6% fat, 6.5% carbohydrates and 1.7% mineral matter

India’s population is likely to reach 1.7 billion by 2050, making it as the thickly populated nation in the world. To feed the ever rising population, food production need augment by 70%. This augment is very serious since Indian agriculture is facing numerous challenges due to disintegration of holdings, ill brunt of climate change, sustaining investment, soaring fluctuation in prices and production, unorganized markets, inconsistent market performance, renovation of agricultural land intended for non-farm purposes and enlarged cost of production (Gangaiah, 2018). The current conditions of the Indian agriculture sector reflect that the farmers are facing severe deficit of income which is to an imperative issue and as a result dissuading the rural youth to take up agriculture as livelihood operation.

Fenugreek (Trigonella sp.) is one among the world’s oldest seed spice crops and has gained a supreme importance due to its extensive pharmacological properties (Basu and Prasad, 2011; Maloo et al., 2020). In ancient time’s fenugreek plant was well known and used as a medicinal drug by Egyptians (Rouk and Mangesha 1963). The Ebers Papyrus (one of the oldest preserved pharmaceutical documents) detailed therapeutic advantages and descriptions in Egypt circa 1500 BC (Betty, 2008). It has gained great importance due to its multifaceted uses which are being exploited by farmer’s and industrialist for different purposes.

Eggplant or brinjal (Solanum melongena L. family. Solanaceae) is the major vegetable crop of wet and hot climatic zone of south Asia (Srinivasan and Huang, 2008). After China, India is the second largest brinjal producer country in the world (Majumdar and Das, 2020). It is nutritious vegetable and consumed in throughout the world. Brinjal is considered as Indian native crop and it has been cultivated for last 4000 year. India is known to be the Origin Centre of brinjal cultivation, from where it distributed to throughout the world (Choudhury and Malda, 1968). In India, brijnal crop grow almost throughout the year. Brinjal fruit contains moisture 92.7g, carbohydrates 4.0g, proteins 1.4g, minerals 0.3g, vitamins 124 I.U. and vitamin 12.0mg per 100 g of edible part (Kalra et al., 1988). It is used as vegetable purpose as well as pickle (Singh et al., 1963).

Flowers have always been associated with mankind since time immemorial because they were used in religious offerings and other social ceremonies. Today; floriculture has emerged as one of the most lucrative business profession and as a major diversification options in the agri-businessin many countries of the world due to higher income per unit area. Floriculture is also known as sunrise sector of agriculture because of its fast growing and increasing demand. In India, about 3,09,000 hectares across the country was used for floriculture and produced 23,88,000 metric tonnes (MT) of loose flowers. India is second largest flower producer after China.

According to Watson, bio-herbicides are living entities (natural enemies) used deliberately to suppress the growth or reduce the population of a weed species. This may include an insect; a microbe or a parasite nematode. These organisms operate directly or indirectly (by producing toxins) and their mode of action proves deleterious to the weed species. The latter toxins are termed bio rationals, phytotoxins or natural herbicides and are excluded in the definition.Bio-herbicides are formulations containing plant pathogens capable of mass production in vitro that are applied directly to target weeds uniformly to kill or suppress their growth. This method employs the annual release of a bio-agent into specific weed infested fields to infest and kill susceptible weeds. At present only the potential use of fungal pathogens as mycoherbicide has been studied in depth. Exploitation of bacteria seems promising where use of viruses as biocontrol agents are problematic since they are not host specific and require vector for their transmission.
