Introduction

With the growing population, increase in demand, and per capita income, tremendous pressure is put on the supply side, pushing them to rely on unsustainable practices to meet this existing and future demand. Compromising on sustainability has not only been responsible for climate change but also other negative environmental externalities. The modern agricultural corporate structure known as agribusiness, which can introduce sustainable and innovative technology into the agricultural sector, would pave the way for achieving all the sustainability dimensions, viz., social, economic, and environmental. With this expanding agribusiness sector, farmers can create a win-win alliance that maintains environmental harmony and financial success. There seems to be a huge scope to achieve sustainability goals well in advance by exploring the pathways with the help of the agri-business sector.

As the global population continues to grow, there will be an ever-increasing demand placed on the agricultural industry to provide more food as well as other raw materials. It is anticipated that farmers will need to produce 70% more food than is currently cultivated to feed up to 10 billion people by the year 2055 (Alexandratos & Bruinsma, 2012). However, the situation is aggravated due to shrinking cultivated areas, depletion of natural resources, higher production costs, fewer farmers, and climatic changes. We are in the middle of a perfect storm of social, economic, and environmental pressures on the food supply around the world. Along with the increasing production and productivity, it has to be taken care of that the natural resources and environment are not exploited indiscriminately. Agriculture is both a threat to climate change and a possible way to stop it. Therefore, sustainability in agriculture is the only way forward. This commitment rests not only with the governments but with all the players in the agricultural supply chain. A holistic approach that concurrently tackles issues of environmental integrity, social equality, and economic prosperity is what we mean when we talk about sustainability. Over the course of the previous few decades, its significance to businesses operating in virtually all fields has grown substantially.

Introduction Insects are the largest group of individuals in the phylum Arthropoda. They are the most dominant species on earth, as they originated 480 million years ago. Insects account for damage to agriculture produced through pest incidence; they also render benefits through pollination services, reduction in pest population as natural enemies, and various other services. Utilisation of beneficial insects like silkworms, honeybees, and lac insects for their products was well known to Indian people way back. In the current chapter, opportunities for the utilisation of some of these beneficial insects for emerging businesses are discussed.

Insect farming

By 2050, there will be a 60% increase in the global need for proteins, driven by the unrelenting growth of the human population. What is very disturbing is that present protein manufacturing uses very unsustainable methods, in addition to this exponential increase. The ecosystem is under a lot of stress from traditional farming practices, which also contribute to the loss of already depleted wild fish species and water supplies. By 2050, there will be 10 billion people on the planet, and to feed them sustainably, new farming options such as insect farming will be necessary. Due to their rapid rates of reproduction and high protein content, insects are extremely simple to produce (Igini, 2022).

Sericulture is regarded as a significant rural and cottage industry in India. It can generate more income in addition to agricultural crops. Although being viewed as a secondary occupation, sericulture may now be practiced on a large scale due to technological advancements. Since it provides a steady source of revenue, cocoon production and cultivation could be seen as a vital economic tool for the improvement of rural communities. It spreads its welfare-raising distributive impact both in the rural and urban sectors of society throughout its vertical process of production (from the rearing of silkworms to the fabrication of silk goods). Although farmers in rural regions engage in sericulture operations, most of the silk is produced in urban towns and cities through weaving. As a result, silk and sericulture are interconnected with both the agrarian and cottage industries, having a broad-based distributive effect on the creation of jobs and revenue. The employment generation pattern of the sericulture sector has been divided into two main categories by the Indian Sericulture Industry: 1) Direct employment, which includes mulberry cultivation, leaf harvesting, and silkworm rearing. 2) Indirect employment examples include reeling, twisting, weaving, printing, dyeing, finishing, and processing silk waste.

Introduction

Most of India's population, which lives in rural areas and is largely uneducated and unskilled, is unable to compete in the employment market generated by the expansion of the service industry. They are therefore reliant on the agricultural sector for their means of subsistence. Even in the modern era, the agriculture industry is still a significant source of employment, as it employs more than fifty percent of the labour force. The cyclical and seasonal character of unemployment is made worse by the fact that agriculture is inherently seasonal and that there are insufficient irrigation facilities.

A significant portion of the labour force used in agriculture is of a secretive character. Even though they provide the appearance of having a job, their marginal production is zero. Even if some of the younger people living in rural farm communities want to move away from primary agricultural production activities and towards secondary agricultural and agribusiness pursuits, it is possible that the current level of agricultural production will not be impacted in any way (Shivacharan et al., 2017). This led to a focus on seeing agriculture as a commercialization aspect for improving the economic aspects of the people who aspire to entrepreneurship in the agriculture sector.

“Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services” (GFRAS) defines “Agripreneur ship as an entrepreneurship activity practiced by individual who aims to cre ate wealth by applying innovative skills within the agriculture industries”. As mentioned, agribusiness entrepreneurship is a relevant solution that may be implemented throughout the agricultural value chain.

In 2030, 289 MT of food grain production will be needed in India, whereas 349 MT would be needed in 2050. India's agriculture is now facing several problems, including the well-being of farmers, deteriorating soil health, stagnant productivity, a declining water table, soil salinity, a decline in factor productivity, and the need to limit further expansion of irrigated land. The livelihoods of millions of small farmers are in peril because of ecologically destructive and unsustainable agricultural practices. Growing countries must increase their agricultural production systems to boost their economies, food supplies, and food and nutritional security (Gill et al., 2005). Previous research initiatives in Indian agriculture that focused on a single company were inadequate to ensure sustained increases in production. Among the f inest choices for low-income farmers is the integrated agriculture system (IFS). With IFS, several farm operations may be streamlined to increase productivity and income. Agricultural waste and trash are also recycled on the property. It is essential that farmers have a reliable source of income if they want to raise their living standards beyond the poverty level. To deal with the challenges of the current economic, political, and technological environments, it is vital to progress production or consistently raise output.

1.1. Background

Once this beautiful planet conceived human civilization with the glory of motherhood, the birds kept on twittering in an ecstasy of joy and freedom; the ripples of pristine rivers, blue and giggling, offered shelter to silvery fishes and pink Amazon Lilies! But human greed has defeated its own needs. So, what had been a means to survive now has turned into tools to triumph, rather, a weapon to destroy her own creation. By this time, we have transformed fertile lands into a barren Arizona, deep forests into a nasty slums and blue rivers into a filthy stream, called Yamuna.

The advent of the Anthropocene, implies that an unprecedented era of human impact on the natural environment, is now so large that the Earth has entered a new geological epoch; it is leaving the Holocene, the environment within which human societies themselves have developed (Gornish and dos Santos, 2016; Reynolds, 2021). Climate change is a prominent sign of human- driven changes to the global environment. There is every reason to be alarmed about anthropogenic climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, all of which have been accelerating in recent decades and do pose “existential crisis” (Díaz et al., 2020; Abhilash et al., 2021). Sixth Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released on February 28, 2022, paints a troubling picture as limiting global warming to 1.5oC (a global target in the Paris Climate Agreement) is not safe for all. If warming exceeds 1.5oC, even temporarily, much more severe, often irreversible effects of climate change will occur, land and ocean temperature change, sea level rise and ocean acidification, loss of Arctic Sea ice and ice sheets, stronger storms, longer heatwaves and droughts, abrupt precipitation mainly intensity and seasonal distribution, thawing permafrost and more (IPCC, 2013). On the basis of the Sixth Assessment UN Secretary-General António Guterres said “The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people at immediate risk.” According to the United Nations (2015), there are still 836 million people in the world living in extreme poverty (less than USD,1.25/ day). And according to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), at least 70% of the very poor live in rural areas, most of them depending partly or completely on agriculture for their livelihoods. It is estimated that 500 million smallholder farms in the developing world are supporting almost 2 billion people, and in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa these small farms produce about 80 percent of the food consumed (IFAD, 2011). The rural poor often depend partly on forests for their livelihoods (World Bank, 2002). It is estimated that between 660 and 820 million people (workers and their families) depend totally or partly on fisheries, aquaculture and related industries as a source of income and support (HLPE, 2014).

7.1 Summary

Never ever in the annals of human civilization, the importance of ecological resilience has become so important and imperative as we are perceiving now. Both the need and greed of food economics have driven the resource bases of our ecosystem, to a dilapidated and fragile status. By 2050 the world’s population will touch close to 9.5 billion and we have to scale up our food production 60% more then what it is right now. In India by 2040, we have to cross 450 million tons of our targeted food production to keep rhythm with population growth. By 2035 we are going to cross the population of China. Understanding the cascade of risks for climate change, as well as the vulnerabilities to these risks, is key to frame ways to adapt. Reducing vulnerabilities is key to reducing the net impacts on food security and nutrition and also to reducing long-term effects. Increasing resilience of food security in the face of climate change calls for multiple interventions, from social protection to agricultural practices and risk management..

When population pressure is soaring up, the need to produce more food from less and less available land and water, the issues of ecological resilience are coming up more swashbuckling and humongous. The aftermath of green revolution has contributed to achievement in food security on one hand, the other hand water has been contaminated and depleted, soil has been eroded with a sharp decline of organic carbon. We are losing 15 tons of topsoil per hectare per year and inviting a disruptive agro-ecosystem, the syndrome of which are quite vivid and prominent.

History of pest control probably started when the first person swatted a mosquito or pulled off a tick, the battle for the control of our planet didn’t start until organized agriculture, when pests attacked the plants, and we grew to eat and threatened our very survival.

A pesticide is any substance or mixture of substances used to stop, kill, avoid, or lessen the effects of a pest (insects, mites, nematodes, weeds, rats, etc.). This includes insecticide, herbicide, fungicide, and many other substances used to control pests. Pesticide was defined in different ways at different times and in different places. But pesticide is still generally the same: it is a (mixed) substance that is poisonous and effective on target organisms but safe for non-target organisms and environments.

Chemical control, commonly known as pest control, is the use of chemicals to reduce insect populations. Herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, rodenticides, acaricides, nematodes, and fungicides are all examples of pesticides. Insecticides are a class of chemicals used to combat insect pests. A substance or combination of compounds used to kill, repel, or otherwise prevent insects is called an insecticide. When it comes to controlling pests, insecticides are most powerful tools available for management. They have a wide range of positive effects, including high efficiency, speed of healing, general applicability, adaptability to different settings, adaptability to shifting agronomic and ecological conditions, and low cost. When insect pest numbers approach or surpass the economic threshold, insecticides are the sole viable instrument for emergency action in pest management. The usage of pesticides, a widely used method, can be central to such a system. The use of chemical pesticides will remain pivotal in these initiatives. In many cases, chemical control of pests is the best option available. Some people’s view of pesticide use for pest management as an ecological sin is incorrect. Chemical pesticides are a reliable and useful tool for the biologist, so long as they are used in accordance with good ecological principles.

Farmers still rely heavily on insecticides because of their efficiency, portability, and speedy returns on investment. Although synthetic organic insecticides are highly efficient, their widespread usage has led to toxicity to natural enemies, toxic residues in plants and the environment, insect resistance, and a resurgence in insect populations. Ripper (1956) first time recognized the problem of resurgence in plant protection.

Metcalf (1986) distinguished between two types of resurgence: primary insect resurgence, in which populations of target insects that had been suppressed by insecticide application quickly recover to excessive levels (Fig. 1.A), and secondary insect outbreak, in which non-target species develop into serious insect s after insecticide application (Fig. 1.B).

Primary insect resurgence

Primary insect resurgence occurs when the target insect population increases to at least as high (Hajek, 2004) or higher (Hardin et al., 1995) than in an untreated control or higher than before the treatment (Pedigo and Rice, 2006).

Secondary insect resurgence/ secondary insect outbreak (Type II resurgence)

The phenomenon known as replacement of a primary insect with a secondary insect, or secondary insect outbreak, occurs when the population of a non-target insect, which is harmful to the crop, experiences a surge following the application of a insecticide aimed at controlling the population of the primary insect. A second insect outbreak is also called resurgence. A secondary insect outbreak is the rise of a non-target species after an insecticide has been used.

In modern poultry farming, the need for alternatives to probiotics is increasing due to concerns about the stability, viability, and potential side effects of using live microbes. Postbiotics have emerged as promising substitutes, offering similar health benefits without the risks. Postbiotics are non-viable microbial metabolitewhich exhibit benefits like promoting gut health, boosting immunity, and preventinfections, which are crucial for sustainable poultry production. Postbiotics enhance gut health by modulating immune responses, improve the microbialenvironment,and inhibit pathogenic growth. Furthermore, their incorporation can reduce theneed for antibiotics in poultry farming, contributingto a decrease in antimicrobial resistance. With the growing global population and increasing demand for animal protein, postbiotics offer sustainable solutions. The review concludes that postbiotics could revolutionize poultry farming, aligning with global efforts toward food security and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 2 i.e. Zero Hunger. Future research should focus on optimizing these additives for large-scale commercial use.This paper highlights the concepts of postbiotics, their mechanisms of action, current research advances, beneficial effects in poultry farming, and future prospects.

Introduction

It is estimated that zoonotic infections account for around 60% of infectious diseases and 70% of newly developing infections in humans. The major zoonotic illnesses that have outbreaks documented between 2009 and 2023 have been divided into two categories: endemic and emergent (IDSP). Zoonoses that are either newly discovered in a population or that have been known to exist in the past but are rapidly expanding in frequency or geographic range are referred to be emerging zoonotic diseases.A variety of underlying causative variables contribute to the genesis of zoonotic illnesses, which pose a worldwide risk to the health of both humans and animals. They reduce food availability, impede agricultural output, and contribute in unnecessary trade embargos. Livestock is crucial to the livelihoods of impoverished farmers, consumers, and traders in India. Close relationships between human population groups and animals, the consumption of unpasteurized milk and dairy products, the intensification of animal production andincreased trade in animals and animal products, the high number of stray animals, illegal slaughter, and improper waste disposal are major risk factors in the introduction and sustenance of zoonotic infections. These outbreaks are continuously increasing. More and more such episodes of new zoonoses such as Nipah virus disease, Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), Kyasanoor Forest Disease (KFD), Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and Zika virus disease have been reported between 2014 and 2023 as compared to the period between2009and 2013.

As per 20th Livestock Census, 2019 goat population in the country was 148.8 million, the second largest species in terms of number after cattle. Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s largest states in terms of population and agricultural activity, boasts a substantial goat population of 14.48 million, which accounts for approximately 9.73% of the country’s total goat population. Goats indeed play a crucial role in many agrarian economies worldwide, including India. In regions where crop and dairy farming may not be as economically viable, goats provide a valuable source of income and sustenance for small and marginal farmers as well as landless laborers. Goats, specifically Capra hircus, possess unique qualities that make them valuable assets in meeting this growing demand for animal protein (Rout et al. 2018). The livestock market has been experiencing significant growth, with global trade presenting vast opportunities for livestock farmers to increase their income. One notable trend over the past decade has been the increasing preference for animal protein consumption worldwide. This shift in dietary habits has led to a surge in demand for meat products, particularly in developing countries where access to protein-rich foods may be limited. The adaptability, diversity, and versatility of goats make them an invaluable resource for agriculture and livelihoods in both developed and developing nations, contributing to food security and economic sustainability in many regions (Mazhangaraet al. 2019).

In the 19th century, Etienne Geoffroy de Saint Hilaire conducted pioneering studies on prenatal anomalies such as cyclocephaly, anencephaly, and twin monsters, and is credited with coining the term 'teratology'. The physician Josef Warkany is considered the father of experimental teratology. His studies led to the definition of both genetic and environmentally induced structural defects. The occurrence of congenital malformations varies significantly across species, breeds, and geographic locations. Studies suggest that approximately 1.5% to 6% of live-born domestic mammals exhibit recognizable congenital malformations. These malformations range from complex anatomical abnormalities to complicated enzyme defects detectable only through advanced molecular diagnostics. Occurrence of these malformation is very low in cat while in sheep, cattle and horses it is almost 3-4 % and highest in dogs and pigs and is range about 6%. The genesis of congenital malformations is understood as interplay between an embryo's genetic makeup and its developmental environment. Teratology thus highlights the critical periods during embryonic development when external influences can significantly impact normal growth and formation, underscoring the delicate balance between genetic predisposition and environmental factors in shaping fetal development. Teratogens are those substances which may cause inheritable birth defect via a toxic effect on an embryo or foetus. These defects include malformation, disruption, deformation and dysplasia which may cause stunted growth, congenital disorders that lack structural malformation. A fundamental principle of teratology is that the susceptibility to teratogenic agents those causing malformations vary with the embryo's developmental stage at the time of exposure. Exposure during the first three weeks of gestation (stage of preformation), when the basic body plan is established, typically results in early embryonic death or is compensated for by regulatory mechanisms within the embryo. Agents that disrupt the morula or blastocyst stages, or interfere with embryo maternal communication and proper implantation in the uterine mucosa, often lead to early embryonic mortality. The severity of malformation is depends on the frequency and dose of the teratogens. Most of the teratogens affect the embryo during early differentiation and organogenesis stage. It has been found that the organogenesis of urogenital system of bovines, equine, canines, porcine and felines are most susceptible for teratogenic agents.

Use of Antimicrobial Agents

The most frequently used classes of antimicrobial drugs in animals include tetracyclines, sulfonamides alone or in combination with potentiators, quinolones particularly fluoroquinolones, aminopenicillins alone as well as in combination with potentiators, first- and second-generation cephalosporins and also third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins, macrolides, and glycopeptides [1]. The “Terrestrial Animal Code”, issued by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) in 2022 represents recent guidance for the responsible and prudent use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine [2]. It describes the respective responsibilities of the competent authority and stakeholders in all processes pertaining to veterinary antimicrobial agents ranging from authorization to the administration to the animals.

The integration of pharmacology and bioinformatics has ushered in a new era of drug discovery and therapeutic innovati on, particularly in veterinary medicine. This interdisciplinary approach leverages computational tools to enhance the identification of drug targets, optimize treatment strategies, and address challenges such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and species specific drug metabolism. Pharmacogenomics, one of the most promising applications, allows for personalized medicine by tailoring drug therapies based on genetic variations in animals. Additionally, bioinformatics is revolutionizing vaccine development by identifying conserved antigens, aiding in the design of broad-spectrum and species-specific vaccines. In silico screening accelerates drug discovery by predicting drug-target interactions, reducing the time and cost of developing new veterinary therapies. Predictive modeling enables the simulation of disease progression and treatment outcomes, improving disease management. As bioinformatics technologies advance, they are poised to transform veterinary pharmacology, offering more precise and effective therapeutic options. This paper explores the synergies and applications of integrating pharmacology with bioinformatics to improve veterinary therapeutics, combat AMR, and accelerate drug discovery.

Antimicrobial drugs are important medicines which are continuously developed and evolveddue to the phenomenon of development of antimicrobial resistance to antimicrobial agents by microorganisms since the discovery of Penicillin by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928-29. It has become essential for both pharmacologists and clinicians to optimize the certain principles of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic aspects in both development of new antimicrobial drugs and in getting better therapeutic outcome in actual clinical situations in the field conditions to overcome the challenge thrown by microorganisms to the mankind.

Pharmacokinetics (PK) describes the relationship between the dose of any drug given and the resulting concentration in the body. It includes the physiological process of absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination whereas Pharmacodynamics (PD) describes the interaction between the drug concentration and pharmacological/therapeutic effect in vivo. It is determined as a definite concentration of a drugand its ability to kill or inhibit the cultured pathogenic microorganismin vitro that is aptly described asminimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in case of antimicrobial drugs.

Nitrovasodilators are pharmaceutically key signalling molecule in the cardiovascular, immune and central nervous systems, and crucial steps in the regulation of NO bioavailability in health and diseases. These agents are well characterized and responsible for vasodilation by donation of nitric oxide (NO), and are principally employed for the treatment and prevention of angina pectoris, several cardiac diseases and regulation of vascular homeostasis (Carlstrom et al., 2024). NO has also been implicated in the pathology of many inflammatory diseases, including arthritis, myocarditis, colitis, and nephritis and a large number of pathologic conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Several alternative strategies to increase NO signalling in the cardiovascular system have recently emerged, with promising therapeutic potential (Lundberg eta al., 2015). Nitroglycerin is commonly used in the treatment of angina pectoris because of its ability to decrease myocardial oxygen consumption. The use of nitroglycerin in the treatment of angina pectoris began not long after its original synthesis in 1847. Since then, the discovery of nitric oxide as a biological effector and better understanding of its roles in vasodilation, cell permeability, platelet function, inflammation, and other vascular processes have advanced our knowledge of the hemodynamic (mostly mediated through vasodilation of capacitance and conductance arteries) and nonhemodynamic effects of organic nitrate therapy, via both nitric oxide–dependent and –independent mechanisms (Divakaran and Loscalzo, 2017). These encompasses the identification of new pathways for enhancing NO synthase activity; ways to amplify the nitrate–nitrite–NO pathway; novel classes of NO-donating drugs; drugs that limit NO metabolism through effects on reactive oxygen species (Lundberg et al., 2015; Roy et al., 2023). Apart from the organic nitrates, direct activators of soluble guanylate cyclase, L-arginine, phosphodiesterase inhibitors and some other drugs also play critical role in vasoprotection (Gewaltig and Kojda, 2002).

Use of veterinary drugs in prevention, control and treatment is becoming inevitable with the intensification of livestock production system. Food animals given veterinary drugs contain residues of parent compounds and/ or their metabolites may remain in edible products for a period of time after treatment. In such scenario if withdrawal period of the drug is not observed, then there is every chance for that residue to become a part of the human diet. Subsequently, people consuming such veterinary drug residue-containing foods may suffer from different adverse health effects like increasing incidence of AMR, in addition to hypersensitivity and allergic reactions in some sensitive individuals. On the other hand, some veterinary drugs like nitrofurans and its metabolites (SEM, AHD, AOZ & AMOZ) represents major concern in food due to their carcinogenic nature and their use in food animals have been banned in most countries. Responsible and prudent use of veterinary drugs in food animals is must to promote animal health and to ensure food safety. On that front, veterinarians who is holding the prescription decision, indeed play a crucial role in the mission for attainment of judicious use of veterinary drugs in food producing animals and complying the regulatory requirement to produce safe animal sourced foods.

Aspergillosis

Aspergillosis is a fungal disease of poultry caused by different species of Aspergillus sp and characterized by granulomatous nodules in lungs, thickening of air sacs and presence of fungal growth in lungs and air sacs in early age of chicks. It is also known as Brooders pneumonia (Fig.8.1).

With increasing demand from consumers for organically produced and certified food products in the country, organic agriculturein India is growing steadily as more and more farmers are adopting organic practices to meet the increasing demand.. Starting with organic tea and spices, it’s grown to organic f lour, breakfast cereals, fruits, vegetables and many more, the number of food categories sold as organic is growing rapidly in India. Of late, the consumer demand for organically produced livestock products like milk, eggs and meat is also on the rise.

Domestic organic food products market in India is witnessing a growth rate of around 20% CAGR in the recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic has also led to consumer awareness about the quality of foods and contributed to the growth of organic food market in the country. As a result, informal markets for organic products are getting established to serve the niche consumers and simultaneously, producer to consumer market is also gaining momentum. Local markets are also now vending perishable organic foods like fruits and vegetables. During 2020-21 in India, there were around 16 lakh organic producers under NPOP production system producing 34.9 lakh tons of organic products in 43.3 lakh hectares of land including 16.8 lakh hectares under wild harvest. During this period, 8.88 lakh tons of organic products worth Rs.7078 crores were exported from India. Under Participatory Guaranty System (PGS) in India, as of September 2021, there are about 42 thousand organic farmer groups comprising of around 12 lakh farmers producing organic products in 75 lakh hectares of land. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are the major organic production states in the country and the major commodities produced are oil seeds, fibre, sugar, cereals, millets, spices and condiments. USA, EU, Canada and Australia are major export destinations of Indian organic products and the major organic products exported from India are processed foods, oil seeds, cereals, millets, spices and tea.

India is bestowed with huge livestock population reared under diverse production systems and agro-climatic conditions. Livestock sector is great importance for the sustainability of rural economies and many ecosystems. The economic importance of livestock activity is reflected by the weight of the agricultural sector in the national gross domestic product. The share of livestock sector to the national GDP has increased more than 56% over the span of ten years to 6.17% in 2020-21 from 3.94% in 2010-11. The contribution of the livestock sector, mean while, to total agriculture GVA has increased to 30.87 per cent from 20 per cent during the corresponding period. The livestock sector employs about 8.8% of the population and provides livelihood to two third of rural communities in India.

India occupies first position in terms of goat population and milk production. Since ancient times goat milk has traditionally been known for its medicinal properties and has recently gained importance in human health due to its proximity to human milk for easy digestibility and it’s all round health promoting traits. The goats are also important for chevon production; the most preferred and relished meat in India. As per 20th Livestock Census, the total population of goats in the country is estimated at 148.88 million numbers. Goat milk has continued to play an important role in human nutrition in the area acknowledged as the cradle of modern civilization (Hatziminaoglou and Boyazoglu, 2004). Goat milk is having better digestibility, alkalinity, buffering capacity and certain therapeutic values in medicine and human nutrition in comparison to cow’s or human milk. Goat milk is considered the best milk for infants because of predominance of smaller fat globules causing faster lipase activity which results in easy digestibility of goat milk (Chandan et al.,1992).

Poultry diseases can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or a combination of these pathogens. Common poultry diseases include Newcastle disease, avian influenza, infectious bronchitis, infectious bursal disease, coccidiosis, and salmonellosis, among others (Grace et al., 2024). These diseases can affect various organs and systems in poultry, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and immune systems, leading to a wide range of clinical signs and symptoms (Dunislawska et al., 2024). Prevention and control of diseases in poultry is paramount for maintaining the health and welfare of poultry f locks and ensuring the sustainability of the poultry industry. Poultry diseases can have devastating effects on production, leading to decreased productivity, increased mortality rates, and significant economic losses. Therefore, implementing effective prevention and control measures is essential for poultry producers to mitigate the risks associated with diseases (George & George, 2023).

Eye

Avian ocular apparatus includes eyeball, optic nerve, and accessary structures e.g., eyelids, lacrimal glands, and muscles etc. The eyeball is composed of three tunics namely the f ibrous (cornea and sclera), vascular (choroid, iris, ciliary body) and nervous tunic (retina). The histological structures of all these tunics are similar to mammals except the Bowman’s membrane (the basal lamina of corneal epithelium) is not distinct. Similar to the mammals, they also have three refractive media viz., aqueous humour, lens, and vitreous humour. The cornea does not refract light.

There are some important diseases and disease conditions of eye in poultry birds. The common aetiology of eye diseases in poultry birds has a wide range and includes heredity, nutritional deficiency, infections (microbial and parasitic) and managemental failure. Some of them are not seen often in the modern intensive rearing systems like the deficiency diseases while others are seen associated only with the intensive system housing of birds like the ammonia burns. The infectious diseases of only eyes, are not encountered in poultry birds. The diseases like the colibacillosis, pasteurellosis and Marek’s disease can affect eyes along with other body systems. Understanding of eye diseases of poultry birds requires basic knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, concepts and terminology of eye associated pathological changes. The affected birds generally show ocular lesions and loss of condition due to starvation as they are unable to search for feed and water. Some conditions are reversible while others may be irreversible according to the extent of damage. Nutritional and managemental diseases in most cases are relatively easy to diagnose and manage, while infectious and hereditary diseases may require deeper investigation. Some diseases like endophthalmitis, eye notch syndrome and ophthalmopathy have been recorded but their causes could not be found out.

India has cemented its position as the global leader in milk production for 2023-24, contributing a staggering 230.58 million tonnes, or 25% of the world’s total supply. This achievement reflects an annual growth rate of 4%, driven by a vast network of small-scale farmers who manage one or two milch animals each. Despite their limited productivity, these farmers collectively power the nation’s dairy industry. Before the transformative Operation Flood, the sector was fragmented, dominated by middlemen, and poorly linked to urban demand. The initiative revolutionized the industry, introducing cooperative, private, and state driven organizations that established a seamless system for milk procurement, processing, and marketing. Today, thousands of dairy factories across the country transform raw milk into value-added products to meet India’s immense demand, with rural households allocating 15.51% of their food budget to dairy and urban households spending an even higher 18.19%. Coordinating milk collection from millions of scattered producers and delivering it to processing facilities is a monumental task, yet this streamlined system ensures that India’s dairy sector continues to thrive and satisfy its growing consumer base. India’s dairy export performance in 2023-24 was nothing short of “legendairy,” shipping 63,738.47 metric tonnes of dairy delights worth $272.64 million to fans in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, USA, Singapore, and Bhutan. Butter, ghee, and dairy spreads took the spotlight with $43.65 million in exports (8,106.54 MT) to destinations like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar, spreading Indian flavor worldwide. Cheese exports were equally impressive, with 9,262.63 MT worth $46.84 million making their way to the UAE, USA, and Bhutan clearly, everyone loves a slice of India.

Though India is a highest producer of milk in the world, only 15 to 20 per cent of the milk is marketed through organized sector comprised of cooperative societies, public and private processing plants. Bulk marketing is limited to processing plants and cooperative societies. In contrast to Indian situation, most of the milk in developed world is consumed in different processed forms. It is something very general to India where overall food markets for processed foods are generally low and same is the case with milk. By all estimates about 75 per cent of the milk purchased by the consumer as liquid milk whether raw or processed. The share of pasteurized milk is only 10 per cent but the demand is increasing at the rate of 15 percent per annum. One fourth of the milk production is processed in the unorganized sector transforming into products like, sweets. Khoa, paneer, curd, lassi, etc. There are small scale milk product manufacturing units which fall in the category of semi-organized sector comprised of creameries, ice-cream units which are manufacturing the similar products as produced by the composite milk plants in the organized sector. They generally serve the local markets but have the important share in processing of milk as well as meeting the consumers specific demands. The organized sector comprised of mainly dairy plants, procures surplus milk through Milk Producers Cooperative Societies and generally follows the HACCP standards leading to quality of the products, whereas unorganized sector is composed of milk vendors, contractors, halwaies and creameries, collect milk from producers and sell either as raw milk or manufactured milk products or both.

With over 8 crore farmers employed and a 5% national GDP contribution, the dairy industry in India is vital to the country’s economy. With around 25% of the world’s milk supply and a massive livestock population of 536.76 million animals, it tops the world in milk production. With major markets in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Singapore, and Bhutan, India exports approximately 63,738.47 metric tonnes of dairy products in 2023–2024, generating US$ 272.64 million.

Fungicides are chemical compounds or biological organisms used to kill or inhibit the growth of fungi and their spores. They are essential tools in agriculture and horticulture for protecting crops and plants from fungal diseases, which can cause significant yield losses and economic damage.

Fungistat: Some chemicals do not kill the fungal pathogens. But they simply arrest the growth of the fungus temporarily. These chemicals are called fungistat and the phenomenon of temporarily inhibiting the fungal growth is termed as fungistatis. Antisporulant Some other chemicals may inhibit the spore production without affecting the growth of vegetative hyphas and are called as ‘Antisporulant’. Eventhough, the antisporulant and fungistatic compounds do not kill the fungi, they are included under the broad term fungicide because by common usage, the fungicide has been defined as a chemical agent which has the ability to reduce or prevent the damage caused to plants and their products

1. What is Genome Sequencing?

Genome sequencing is the process of determining the complete DNA sequence of an organism’s genome. The genome is the genetic material that contains all the instructions necessary for the growth, development, functioning and reproduction of an organism. It is composed of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid., which is a long molecule made up of four building blocks called nucleotides adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G).

2. Why is genome sequencing important in plant pathology?

Genome sequencing is essential in plant pathology for several reasons

i. Genome sequencing in plant pathology identifies and characterizes plant pathogens at the molecular level.

Seed treatment refers to the application of chemical or biological substances to seeds before planting. This process is designed to protect seeds from diseases, pests, and other adverse conditions that may affect germination and early growth and can improve overall crop yield and quality. Seed treatment can involve the use of fungicides, insecticides, bactericides, and other agents that help improve seed health and vigor. Seed treatment is a crucial step in ensuring healthy crop production. By investing in seed treatment, farmers can achieve better crop establishment and reduce the need for subsequent interventions, leading to more sustainable and cost-effective agricultural practices.

4.1 Importance of Seed Treatment

1. Disease Control: Seed treatment helps to protect seeds and seedlings from soil-borne and seed-borne pathogens, reducing the risk of diseases that can impair seed germination and seedling growth.

2. Pest Protection: Treated seeds are less likely to be damaged by insects and other pests that may be present in the soil. This protection can lead to higher seed survival rates and better crop establishment.

3. Improved Germination: By reducing the incidence of diseases and pests, seed treatment can enhance the germination rate and uniformity of seedlings, leading to more robust and consistent crop stands.

4. Nutrient Provision: Some seed treatments include nutrients or growth promoters that help improve seedling vigor and early development, ensuring that young plants have a better start.

5. Resistance to Environmental Stress: Seed treatments can help seeds withstand adverse environmental conditions such as drought, salinity, and temperature fluctuations, improving the overall resilience of the crop.

10.1 Multiple transplanting for increasing papaya yield: Papaya seedlings are uprooted and transplanted at a different spot, then uprooted again and planted back at the same spot after fifteen days. This decreases the plant's height and enhances its productive phase (Banaskantha, Gujarat). Kodarbhai (1999).

10.2 Reducing mango flower drop by applying buttermilk and salt: To prevent mango flowers from dropping due to wind and disease, farmers dig a circular trench around the tree trunk during flowering, mix 60-80 liters of buttermilk with 2 kg of salt, and pour it into the trench. After absorption, fresh water is added, and the practice is repeated (Banaskantha, Gujarat). Dudhaji (1997).

10.3 Enhancing fruit set in papaya by inserting a nail in the stem: To induce fruiting in trees that flower but do not bear fruit, farmers insert nails (iron or wooden, 1-2 cm in diameter) into the stem about a foot high (Amreli, Gujarat). Sheldiya (1992).

10.4 Increasing yield of vegetables and fruits by using hair: Waste hair is collected and applied to vegetable, fruit, and ornamental crops. Hair is buried around plants in pits (1/2 kg for ornamental plants, 1 kg for fruit trees) one month after planting and 45 days before fruiting. For vegetables like tomato and brinjal, hair is dispersed during the last ploughing (Tamil Nadu). Subbiah (1998).

10.5 Lemon juice for higher lemon productivity: Farmers increase lemon productivity by spraying a solution of 100 ml lemon juice dissolved in 2 liters of water on lemon trees, ensuring all leaves are wet (Rajkot, Gujarat). Pethan (1997a).

Due to their remarkable health benefits, such as their low glycemic index, rich amino acid profiles, and abundance of B vitamins and antioxidants, little millets, formerly hailed as nutri-cereals, are once again becoming important dietary staples. These crops, which include a variety of species like finger millet, foxtail millet, and barnyard millet, have stimulated innovation in the food business by producing value-added goods like rice analogs, noodles, and biscuits. Additionally, their medicinal qualities could help advance research on nutraceuticals. Small millets are essential to climate-smart agriculture because of their renowned resilience, which allows them to flourish on marginal soils and in difficult climates. Breeding efforts seeking to create climate-resilient, high-yielding, and lucrative cultivars can benefit greatly from their extensive genetic diversity, which is conserved in traditional landraces and farmer-managed cultivars. Even with their potential, small millets’ genetic development projects are still in their early stages, requiring concentrated efforts to find trait-specific donors and enhance breeding techniques. In addition to preserving their ethnobotanical and cultural heritage, the conservation of their genetic resources supports international initiatives for environmental sustainability and food security. Small millets have the potential to become a vital component of sustainable and nutritionally enhanced agricultural systems by incorporating cutting edge agricultural techniques and speeding up breeding improvements.

History of poultry production

Domestication of birds has a long history, with evidence of their existence and use dating back thousands of years. Here are some key points:

• Chickens: Archaeological evidence suggests domesticated chickens existed in China 8,000 years ago and later spread to Western Europe, possibly via Russia. The cockfighting in India 3,000 years ago indicates their cultural significance. Modern domestic chickens (Gallus domesticus) evolved from the wild red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus), native to India and Southeast Asia.

• Pigeons: The domestic pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica) is considered the world’s oldest domesticated bird.

• Geese: Domestic geese (Anseranserdomesticus in Africa, Europe, and West Asia; Ansercygnoides in East Asia) were domesticated in Egypt over 4,000 years ago and have significance in Roman mythology.

The performance of any commercial stock (offspring) depends on the careful selection and scientific breeding of their parent stocks, known as “breeders.” Breeders are the backbone of any commercial poultry operation, as they produce the next generation of chickens, ensuring the continuity and quality of the flock. A breeder farm’s primary purpose is to produce a high number of fertile eggs per layer bird and to increase hatchability through proper hygienic handling of these eggs. Effective breeder farm management encompasses several key areas, including:

• Pure Line Management: Focusing on maintaining and improving specific genetic lines.

• Parent Stock Management: Managing the birds that directly produce commercial layers or broilers.

• Grandparent Stock Management: Managing the generation that produces parent stock, critical for maintaining genetic diversity and quality.

Feeds and Feeding of Poultry

Proper feeding is crucial for the optimal growth, health, and productivity of poultry. It constitutes a significant portion of the total production cost in poultry farming, often accounting for 70-75%. Understanding the different types of feed ingredients and their nutritional contributions is essential for formulating balanced diets that meet the specific needs of poultry at various stages of growth and production.

Different Feed Ingredients Used in Poultry

Poultry feed ingredients are broadly classified into four categories: energy rich feedstuffs, protein-rich feedstuffs, vitamin and mineral sources, and non nutritive feed additives. Typically, commercial poultry feeds are formulated by blending 10-15 different ingredients to provide a balanced diet that meets the nutritional requirements of the birds.

Reproductive Organs of Fowl and Formation of Egg

The reproductive system of a hen is a fascinating and intricate setup designed to produce one of nature’s most perfect foods-the egg. Understanding this system requires a look into its two primary components: the ovary and the oviduct.

The Ovary

The ovary is where the magic begins. A hen typically has two ovaries, but in most cases, only the left ovary develops fully and remains functional. The right ovary, although present, becomes rudimentary and non-functional. The left ovary is responsible for the formation of ova, the initial stage of the egg.

Inside the ovary of a hen are approximately 2000 visible yolk-filled ova. These ova are the potential eggs, each waiting to be developed and released. As a hen matures, these ova progress through various stages of development. The transformation from an immature pullet, which has a small, undeveloped oviduct weighing about 1.1 grams, to a mature pullet ready to lay eggs, involves significant changes. By the time a pullet lays her first egg, her oviduct has grown to weigh around 77.2 grams.

Incubation is a critical process in poultry farming, involving the hatching of fertile eggs to produce chicks. This process can be carried out by natural or artificial means. Natural incubation involves placing eggs under a broody hen or duck, allowing the mother bird to provide the necessary warmth and conditions for hatching. In contrast, artificial incubation uses machines called incubators to create the ideal environment for the eggs to hatch. The incubation period, which varies among different poultry species, remains consistent within the same species regardless of whether natural or artificial methods are used.

While the fourth agricultural revolution has been sparked by technological advancements, humans still face many challenges in achieving agricultural resilience to meet the demands of the world’s expanding population, including declining croplands, depleting water supplies, the negative effects of climate change, and more. On the one hand, food and dairy products are in increasing demand due to the growing population. On the other hand, an increasing number of variables pose a threat to food security and sustainable food production, including globalization, climate change, scarce land and water resources, unsustainable land management techniques, pests and diseases becoming resistant to chemical pesticides, and the emergence of pathogens that have adapted to new hosts. The integration of geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI) in geospatial approaches offers a solid foundation for the sustainable management of agricultural resources with the goal of boosting agricultural output. These days, local, regional, and worldwide agricultural production uses these sophisticated instruments more and more. Growers have been more interested in implementing precision agriculture during the past ten years. Precision agriculture is a crop-management method that takes into account the temporal and geographical heterogeneity of soil and crops within a field. Another agricultural technique that is being promoted as a future development that will enable the world’s population to be fed sustainably is precision agriculture. The broad use of geographic methods for agricultural resource management, including crop disease monitoring and pest infestation control, is the main topic of this chapter.

The stone fruit crops namely peach, Prunus persica, plum, Prunus domestica, apricot, Prunus armeniaca, almond, Prunus dulcis and walnut, Juglans regia are grown in wide range of climatic conditions ranging from subtropical to temperate regions. Peach and plum are also cultivated in mid and low hills in addition to temperate regions. Peach is the major stone fruit crop followed by plum, apricot and cherry. Walnut and almond on the other hand are major nut crops. A number of insect pests (~80) infest stone and nut fruits in various stages of the tree growth and development and cause direct and indirect loss out. Only few pests are of economic concern, the details of which are given hereunder

1) Red rot
Symptoms: It is one of the most destructive disease of sugarcane. Dark reddish spot with brown margin appear along the mid rib. When the diseased canes are split open red blotches with transversely elongated white centres are seen. Under humid conditions numerous black dot like acervuli develop in the central discoloured portions. The diseased tissues emit a typical alcoholic odour. The juice of the affected stalks gives a sour alcoholic smell.
Causal organism: Colletotrichum falcatum
Management
i) Select healthy and disease free setts.
ii) Dip the setts on Carbendazim 50% WP or Thiophanate Methyl 70% WP @0.15% solution for 30 minutes before planting.
iii) Avoid rationing of infested crops.
