Introduction
• Arrival of the nerve stimulus at the motor end plate result in reversal of the polarization of the sarcolemmal surfaces and the muscle gets activated
• This causes momentarily loss of potassium and sodium ions impermeability by the sarcolemma and Ca++ ions combined with calsequestrin in the sarcotubular system gets dissociated bringing Ca++ ion equilibrium with the sarcoplasm
• The junctional foot protein (JFP) and the L-type calcium channel (LTC) are the two big protein complexes responsible for the calcium release mechanism (Fig. 10.1)

Pollution emanating from industrial units has become a major problem globally and it is generally monitored by some government agencies. These agencies enforce various laws and regularly carry out checks at the industrial units. Same is true with regards to slaughterhouses or abattoirs. Pollution parameters are parameters against which the effluents coming out of the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) of slaughterhouse or any industrial entity is measured against. Effluent generated during various processes of the slaughterhouse is directed towards the ETP and it undergoes different processes to reduce the pollutants level in the effluent. Then, the effluent is tested against the pollution parameters and the effluent must have less than the maximum permissible level of the pollution parameters. The effluent must not have more than the permissible maximum level of the pollutants after coming out of ETP before being discharged into the municipal sewage system or some natural water bodies.

Pollution
The Latin word “polluere,” which meaning to “soil” or “defile,” is the source of theEnglish word “pollution.” Unwanted changes in our environment that negatively impact humans, animals, and plants are known as pollution.
Any unfavorable alteration to the physical, chemical, or biological properties of any element of the environment (air, water, or soil) that has the potential to negatively impact a variety of life forms and property is referred to as environmental pollution.
Substances that are produced by human activity and are present in greater quantities than they would naturally be—solid, liquid, or gaseou —and that negatively impact our environment are referred to as pollutants.
Three Categories of Contaminants Exist
• Pollutants that break down or are not persistent: Natural processes rapidly decompose them. For instance, leftover veggies, home sewerage, etc.
• Pollutants that degrade slowly or are persistent: These are bad for the environment and take decades to break down. For example, most plastics and DDT (pesticides).
• Non-biodegradable contaminants: These have long-term negative effects on the environment and public health since they cannot be broken down by natural processes. For instance, radioactive waste and toxic materials like lead or mercury.

The productivity of waste lands is extremely low, and the individuals who own them are impoverished and compelled to work for pay. Wastelands are therefore seen as a potent weapon for combating the problems of poverty and backwardness.
Definitions
Water and land are essential for the development of agriculture. Wasteland is eventually created when there is a decrease of vegetation cover, which causes erosion to take place. Waste lands are large areas of land that have been degraded and are rather difficult to plough.
The National Wasteland Development Board (NWDB) and the Planning Commission established a Technical Task Group. According to this group, wastelands are areas of deteriorated land that are currently underutilized due to various constraints, withthe exception of current use  (CSIR 1990). Depending on the random elements, the wastelands could be categorized under
1. I.erosion caused by water
2. Erosion caused by wind and
3. The Alkalinity and Salinity
The arid, stony, steeply sloped, and snow-covered wastelands are examples of the uncultivated wastelands.

Fodder serves as the foundational element of livestock nutrition within natural farming frameworks. Providing animals with a consistent, nutritious, and chemical-free fodder supply throughout the year is essential to maintaining their health, optimizing productivity, and ensuring long-term sustainability. In contrast to commercial models that often depend on externally sourced feed concentrates, natural farming promotes the cultivation of fodder on-farm through organic and regenerative practices. India’s fodder supply is typically divided into the following categories:
• Green Fodder: This includes grasses like Napier, Guinea, and Dinanath, as well as legumes such as Berseem, Lucerne, and Cowpea, and nutrient-rich tree leaves from Moringa, Subabul, and Neem.
• Dry Fodder: Comprising crop residues like wheat straw, paddy straw, maize stalks, and groundnut haulms.
• Pasture and Forest Grazing: Utilization of common lands, silvopasture systems, and forest areas for grazing.
• Fodder Trees and Hedges: Protein-rich varieties like Gliricidia, Sesbania, and Leucaena, which also enhance soil fertility.
In natural farming, fodder crops are grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Farmers enrich soil and seeds with preparations like Jeevamrit and Beejamrit. Mulching helps conserve soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and foster microbial activity. Intercropping and crop rotation with cereals and legumes maintain ecological balance and soil vitality. Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) methods integrate livestock with crop cycles to regenerate fodder naturally.
The establishment of fodder banks and use of staggered sowing patterns ensures a steady supply even during off-seasons. In arid regions, drought-tolerant and native fodder varieties are prioritized to uphold fodder security.

In natural farming-based aquaculture, feed management emphasizes sustainable practices that utilize naturally occurring food sources along with lowcost supplements. This method reduces dependency on commercial feeds and chemical inputs, aligning with eco-friendly farming principles and supporting aquatic biodiversity. Fish raised in natural farming systems primarily feed on natural organisms such as plankton, algae, and detritus. These develop in ponds fertilized with organic inputs like cow dung and compost, which help create a self-sustaining aquatic ecosystem. Fish thrive by feeding through the natural food chain, minimizing the need for external inputs.
Supplementary feeding includes locally sourced plant materials such as azolla, duckweed, water hyacinth, and aquatic weeds that are rich in nutrients. Farmers also use kitchen waste, crop residues, and agricultural byproducts like rice bran and wheat bran to enhance nutritional value.
Fermented feed mixtures—made using bran, cow urine, and microbial solutions—are applied to improve digestion and nutrient uptake. These probiotic feeds support fish health and improve immunity without resorting to synthetic additives. Regular pond maintenance, including partial water renewal and organic fertilization, supports the continuous generation of natural feed organisms. This ensures a balanced and productive environment for fish rearing.
Adopting such natural feed strategies leads to healthier fish, reduced environmental impact, and lower input costs. It also complements integrated farming systems, contributing to farm sustainability and diversified income opportunities.

On-farm feed formulation involves preparing nutritionally balanced rations for livestock using locally available ingredients, while keeping in mind the animals’ dietary needs and the cost-effectiveness of components. This can be done either manually or through mathematical methods such as linear programming. Key elements of the process include understanding animal nutrient requirements, the nutritional profile of ingredients, and using tools like Pearson’s square for precise formulation.
This practice is a core aspect of natural feed management, enabling farmers to create customized feed mixes with natural, locally sourced inputs. It significantly reduces reliance on commercial feeds, lowers production costs, and promotes principles of ecological balance and self-reliance integral to natural farming systems. The aim is to meet the dietary needs of various livestock species—such as cattle, buffaloes, goats, poultry, and fish—during different life stages like growth, lactation, reproduction, and maintenance, using only natural, chemical-free components.
Frequently used natural ingredients include the folloning:
• Cereal Grains: Maize, sorghum, pearl millet, rice bran (as energy providers)
• Oilseed Cakes: Groundnut, mustard, sesame (for protein)
• Pulse Residues: Broken pulses and husks (rich in digestible protein)
• Green Forages: Moringa, lucerne, subabul, cowpea (sources of vitamins and minerals)
• Minerals: Rock salt, lime powder, ash, crushed bones or eggshells
• Natural Additives: Neem leaves, garlic, turmeric, and fenugreek (for health and digestion)
Common techniques in feed Formulation are as bollows:
• Mixing ingredients manually in proportions suited to the animal’s requirements
• Enhancing digestion and microbial activity using Jeevamrit or other fermented inputs

Let‘s dive deeper into the processes of condensation and explore each in more detail:
• Adiabatic Processes: Adiabatic cooling occurs when air rises and expands, reducing its temperature (Fig. 9.1). This process can lead to condensation and cloud formation. There are several ways air can rise and cool adiabatically:
• Orographic Lift: When air is forced to rise over a mountain or hill, it cools, and condensation occurs, resulting in clouds and precipitation. This is why mountainous regions often experience more rainfall than surrounding are as.
• Frontal Lift: When two air masses with different temperatures and humidity levels meet, the warmer air is forced to rise, cool,
and condense, forming clouds and precipitation. This can lead to significant weather changes, such as the formation of fronts and lowpressure systems.
• Convection: When the sun heats the ground, it warms the air closest to the surface, causing it to rise and cool, leading to condensation and cloud formation. This process can lead to the development of cumulus clouds, thunderstorms, and other types of convective weather.

Modifying microclimates in agriculture involves altering the local climate conditions surrounding crops or plants to create a more favorable environment for growth. This can be achieved through various techniques when the crops are subjected to weather related stresses.
14.1. To Mitigate Moisture Stress during Droughts
When the crops are under moisture stress, the principles involved are conservation of soil moisture and reduce the evapotranspiration from crops. The moisture conservation can be achieved by suppressing soil evaporation using mulches (Fig. 14.1). The evapotranspiration can be reduced using antitranspirants. Some antitranspirents close the stomata of the leaves to reduce evapotranspiration. Some anti-transpirants increase the reflectance of radiation from the crops, thereby reducing heat load on crops. When crops are grown under irrigation in isolated patches, micro shelter belts can be provided across the predominant wind direction to reduce the increased evapotranspiration from advection. Advection is phenomena of horizontal transport of heat due to strong hot and dry winds.

Background
Blood collection from cows and other animals is a routine procedure often performed for diagnostic, research, or health-monitoring purposes. Diagnostic testing, such as hematology, biochemistry, hormone assay, infectious disease testing, and animal pregnancy diagnosis, can be done using blood. Blood samples are required for genetic testing (DNA fingerprinting or parentage determination), pharmacokinetic studies, and immunological studies. Another use of blood collection is monitoring animal health.
It is essential to consider that proper techniques of blood sample collection should be followed. Avoid introducing infection to the animal during blood collection. Remember the animal welfare to minimize distress and discomfort to the animal during blood collection.

• Sterile syringe or vacutainer (usually 16-18 G needle)
• Blood collection tubes (BD Science K2 EDTA Vacutainer(R) PLUS 6 mL) for whole blood, serum tubes for serum collection, or other specific tubes depending on the test (Figure 1).

Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye. It is a crucial aspect of our daily lives, and its importance extends beyond just visibility (Fig. 5.1). Light plays a vital role in various fields, including agriculture, energy, health, and more.
5.1. Properties of Light
• Wavelength: Light consists of different wavelengths, which determine its color. The visible spectrum of light includes colors ranging from approximately 380 nanometers (violet) to 780 nanometers (red).
• Intensity: Light intensity affects its brightness and energy. Higher intensity light is more energetic and can have a greater impact on various processes.
• Direction: Light travels in straight lines and can be directed or focused. This property is essential for applications like lasers, optics, and solar concentrators.

Weather’s influence begins with the very first stage of a plant’s life. Temperature governs seed germination and seedling development, while sunlight provides the energy for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy. The availability of water, dictated by rainfall patterns, is crucial for plant growth and nutrient absorption. Wind patterns can aid in pollination but also cause damage to crops.
Throughout the growing season, weather continues to play a critical role. Optimal temperatures are essential for each stage of plant development, from flowering to fruit production. Adequate rainfall, or irrigation to supplement it, ensures healthy growth and abundant yields.

Sericulture, the art and science of silk production through silkworm rearing, is profoundly influenced by weather conditions. Optimal weather is not just beneficial; it’s often a prerequisite for successful mulberry cultivation and healthy silkworm development. 20.1. Weather’s Influence on Mulberry Cultivation
Mulberry (Morus spp.) leaves are the sole food source for the most commercially important silkworm, Bombyx mori. Therefore, the health and productivity of mulberry plants are paramount. Weather parameters significantly affecting mulberry growth (Fig. 20.1) include:
Temperature: Mulberry thrives in a mean atmospheric temperature range of 24 to 28oC . While it can survive between 13.0 to 37.7oC, optimal growth and bud sprouting occur within the narrower ideal range. Temperatures outside this can stunt growth and leaf quality.
• Rainfall: An annual rainfall between 600 mm and 2500 mm is suitable for mulberry. In regions with lower rainfall, irrigation becomes essential. Consistent moisture is crucial for leaf yield and quality. Excessive rainfall can lead to waterlogging, harming the plants.

Defining Wellbeing
The notion of wellbeing is not new, it is much more difficult to come up with a consensus definition since the phrase is frequently ill-defined and under-theorized (Camfield, Streuli & Woodhead, 2009). The problem of definition inconsistency is exacerbated by the fact that the phrases “wellbeing” and “happiness,” “flourishing,” “enjoying a good life,” and “life satisfaction” are frequently used synonymously, although having quite different connotations.
Defining wellbeing is tough because it's talked about in many different ways across local and global media, literature, and daily conversations. So many voices, so many angles. But that makes the journey of understanding it all the more fascinating! At first, there were two distinct schools of thinking on wellbeing: hedonic and eudemonic. From a hedonic perspective, happiness is defined as the sum of all happy experiences.
Philosophers like DeSade, Bentham and Hobbes defined wellness as the “pursuit of sensations and pleasure” Hobbes as “a pursuit of human appetites,” and Husain (2008) as “the good society is built through maximizing pleasure and self-interest.” Being loyal to one’s inner self and having a eudaimonic viewpoint on wellbeing are synonymous with the concept of eudaimonia. Maslow (1970) developed a notion of self that builds upon the eudaimonic idea of wellbeing. The conditions that exist in life and the ways in which a person or community makes use of those situations directly affect the quality of life that an individual or community experiences. Wellbeing has become “something everyone seemingly aims for and arguably has a right to,” according to McCallum and Price (2016).

Mental wellbeing in youngsters is not merely the absence of mental illness; it encompasses a state of positive psychological functioning, where individuals are able to manage their emotions, build healthy relationships and navigate the challenges of life. This period is characterized by significant physical, emotional and cognitive development, making it a critical time for establishing the foundations of mental health.
Mental wellbeing is a crucial aspect of overall health, especially during the formative years of childhood and adolescence. In the contemporary scenario, for youngsters, the journey to mental wellbeing is a complex interplay of biological, psychological and social factors. This journey is increasingly shaped by rapid societal changes, technological advancements, academic pressure, family dynamics and global crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. These influences have profound implications for the mental health of young people, making it essential to explore the current challenges and opportunities in promoting mental wellbeing among this demographic.
Psychological Development During Adolescence
Adolescence is a time of significant psychological change, marked by the development of identity, self-concept and emotional regulation. During this stage, youngsters begin to form their own beliefs and values, separate from those of their parents or guardians. They also develop the capacity for abstract thinking and moral reasoning, which allows them to engage with complex social issues and make independent decisions. These developmental processes are influenced by a range of factors,

In today’s world, where youngsters face inevitable stress and pressure, wellbeing has gained significant importance. Since research began in the field of mental wellbeing, psychologists have increasingly focused on ‘quality and satisfaction of life,’ making it a popular topic. Quality of life and life satisfaction measure an individual’s perceived level of psychological wellbeing, wellness and happiness, often used interchangeably with subjective or general wellbeing. Mental wellbeing can be described as the overall mental state of an individual who is well-adjusted to their environment. This includes feelings of contentment, enjoyment, happiness, satisfaction with life experiences, job satisfaction and a sense of achievement and belonging. Additionally, it encompasses the ability to manage grief, distress, dissatisfaction, fear or worry in personal and social life. Due to the difficulty in objectively measuring these parameters, the term ‘subjective’ or general wellbeing is emphasized. This concept generally promotes a subjective sense of wellbeing, influencing individuals’ attention to self-care and emotional wellbeing.
Researchers studying subjective or general wellness often view it as a multi-faceted domain rather than a single construct (Pavot and Diener, 2003). Diener, Suh, Lucas and Smith (1999) define subjective wellness as a broad category that includes people’s emotional responses, domain satisfaction and overall life satisfaction. The concept of wellness encompasses both physical and mental health, as well as moral and ethical values. Life is not always smooth; people encounter failures, frustrations and disappointments. It is the mental strength and wisdom of a person that helps them move forward and emerge from life’s occasional darkness to achieve wellness. Maintaining mental balance amid life’s difficulties is crucial for achieving one’s goals.

What causes lead to mental illness? Although the exact origin of the majority of mental health problems is unclear, research indicates that many of these diseases are caused by a combination of biological, psychological, environmental and socioeconomic factors.
Many mental illnesses are passed down through family lineage. However, it doesn’t imply that just because one or more of one’s ancestors had an illness, they will compulsarily inherit it too. But just because your mother or father had one does not mean you will.
Some illnesses impair brain circuits that control thought, emotion and behavior. Within particular circuits, for instance, certain brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters may be activated excessively or insufficiently. Certain mental diseases are also linked to brain injury.
Mental health illness in adolescence are a significant problem, relatively common and amenable to treatment or intervention. Mental disorders and mental health problems seem to have increased considerably among adolescents in the past 20-30 years. The rise has been driven by social change, including disruption of family structure, growing youth unemployment and increasing educational and vocational pressures.
The prevalence of mental health disorders among 11 to 15 year olds in Great Britain is estimated to be 11%, with conduct problems more common among boys and depression and anxiety more common among girls. The identification, treatment and follow up of mental health problems in young people can be complicated. Parents and teachers may dismiss problems as merely reflecting adolescent turmoil. Young people are often very reluctant to seek help, owing to developmental needs about being “normal” at the time when they are exploring identity issues and trying to engage with a peer group.

Mental health prevention entails intervening to reduce mental health problems by addressing underlying factors before a specific issue arises in an individual, group or population. The primary objective is to decrease the occurrence of future mental health problems. Mental health promotion and prevention strategies seek to enhance an individual’s emotional regulation capabilities, promote healthier alternatives to risky behaviors, cultivate resilience in managing challenges and adversities and foster supportive social environments and networks. These initiatives lie at the heart of a public health approach to children and youth mental wellbeing, emphasizing the importance of optimizing positive mental health while also preventing and addressing mental health issues.
Adolescence represents a critical period for mental health vulnerabilities. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that approximately half of all mental health conditions manifest by the age of 14, often remaining unidentified and untreated. Nonetheless, proactive preventive measures can yield significant benefits. The latest WHO report highlights the “numerous opportunities for health promotion and disease prevention during adolescence, which could have positive effects on young individuals in both the short and long term.” The WHO guidance advocates for the implementation of preventive psychosocial interventions among youth to mitigate or prevent the potential longterm consequences of mental health conditions.

5.1. Meaning
Demand in economics means a desire to possess a good supported by willingness and ability to pay for it. If you have a desire to buy a tractor, but do not have the adequate means to pay for it, it will simply be a wish, a desire or a want and not demand. Demand is an effective desire, i.e., a desire which is backed by willingness and ability to pay for a commodity in order to obtain it. In the words, “Demand means the various quantities of a good that consumer willing and able to purchase at various price during a particular period of time in a given place/market”. Thus, demand in economics implies both the desire to purchase and the ability to pay for a good.

1. According to Prof. J M Keynes, “emphasized the importance of effective demand, which is the total amount of goods and services that consumers are willing and able to purchase at various price levels, taking into account their income and other factors”.
2. According to Alfred Marshall, “the amount demanded of a commodity is the amount that buyers are able and willing to purchase at a given price in a given time period.”
3. According to John Maynard Keynes: “demand as the total amount of goods and services that individuals, businesses and the government are willing and able to purchase at various price levels”.
4. According to Milton Friedman “demand as the quantity of a good or service that people are willing to buy at a specific price, influenced by their utility and income”.
5. According to Paul Samuelson “demand as the quantity of a product that consumers are willing to buy at different prices, holding other factors constant”.

13.1. Introduction
Knowledge regarding various relationships existing between costs and output is necessary to comprehend the concepts of equilibrium conditions of different firms under different market conditions. Basically we require data on output, fixed costs, variable costs and the prices of inputs and outputs. From this data we finally derive all the seven cost concepts, viz.,TFC, TVC, TC, AFC, AVC, AC and MC. These cost concepts would have implications for output expansion of the firms and equilibrium position of the firms in different time periods. In the cost theory, economists use different names for cost concepts under different context. They are money costs or nominal costs, real costs, opportunity costs, economic costs, implicit costs, explicit costs, deflated costs, social costs, short run costs, long run costs, separable costs, etc.
Nominal Costs or Money Costs
These are usually expressed in money terms at current prices. Nominal costs of production refer to per unit cost of production of output at current market prices.
Real Costs
When the costs of inputs and input services are expressed at constant prices they become real costs.

16.1. Meaning
National Income is nothing but the aggregate money value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year. It can also be viewed as income distributed among the factors of production in the form of rent (to land), wages (to labour) interest (to capital) and profits (to entrepreneurs).
According to Alfred Marshal National Income is defined as the labour and capital of a country acting on its natural resources produce annually a certain net aggregate of goods and services.
16.1.1. Limitations
• In an economy in which numerous goods and services are produced, it is really a difficult proposition to estimate them correctly to arrive at the national income. Coming to the farming, farmers do retain some part of production for personal consumption and the rest is only marketed. In such a case, the methodology to evaluate the amount of produce not reached the market has not been given.
• Double counting: It implies the same good being counted twice: say, cotton may be counted in agricultural production and the cotton cloth in industrial production.
Marshall approached national income from production end. On the other hand, some other economist approached from consumption end. At the same time this approach in reality poses problems. Consumers who number in millions, consumes the same good at different places, and the estimation of their total consumption is a difficult proposition. Hence, there are problems in measurement of national income.

17.1. Theories of Population
The theory of population is studied because the supply of labour depends upon population and its growth. Observing the abnormal growth of population and consequent fall in the standard of living, Thomas Malthus (1760 – 1834) an English Clergyman first studied population growth in various countries of Europe. Later he wrote a book entitled “An Essay on the Principles of Population” in 1798. His observations compelled him to foresee a gloomy future for the human race and hence emphasized the immediate need to keep the population growth under check. Now his theory is popularly known as Malthusian theory of population. To quote the theory in his own words “By nature human food increases in a slow arithmetic ratio, man himself increases in a quick geometric ratio unless want and vice stop him.”
17.1.2. Propositions of Malthusian Theory
These are briefly presented below:
1. Population is necessarily limited by means of subsistence (food supply). According to Malthus in a country the size of population depends on its food production. Greater the food production, larger would be the size of population, which a country can support and smaller the food production then the country would be in a position to support smaller population only.
2. The power of population is infinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for men. He further adds that population growth always overtakes food production, since agricultural production is constrained by the law of diminishing returns. This prevents the food production to grow as faster as that of population. As such, there is no limit to the growth of population.
3. Population increases in geometric progression, whereas food production increases in arithmetic progression. This means that population tends to grow in quick geometric progression i.e., 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc., while,

18.1. Meaning
When the human civilization was not developed, people used to exchange those goods which they produced for those which others produced. Such an act of exchanging goods for goods is called barter. But as the years rolled by and when the social organization became more complex, barter system was found to be not practicable. The following are the main difficulties which were found in the barter system.
1. Double coincidence of wants
2. Lack of a standard unit of account
3. Impossibility of subdivision of goods
4. Lack of information
5. Production of large and very costly goods not feasible
The difficulties in barter system were replaced with the introduction of money. Money has been defined as the medium of exchange. According to Robertson money is defined as “Anything which is widely acceptable in discharge of obligations”. The different stages in the development of money are as follows.
1. Commodity Money: The earliest form of money consisted of goods like rice, wheat, cattle, skins, elephant tusks etc. These were accepted as they were all desired by all the people.
2. Metallic Money: As the civilization advanced, people found it difficult to carry on the exchange transaction with commodities, as they were found to be very inconvenient. Commodity money gave way for the metals to be used as money. These metals include gold, silver, copper, bronze, etc. From the beginning of their introduction, Government kept the right to issue coins and certify their weight and quality. Metals were converted into coins for this purpose.

Fish pathology is a specialized area within veterinary and aquatic sciences that focuses on understanding diseases affecting fish—their origins, progression, effects, and methods of control. With aquaculture playing an increasingly critical role in meeting global protein demands, maintaining fish health is essential for the long-term viability and efficiency of aquatic farming. Like other animals, fish are prone to numerous diseases caused by a variety of pathogens, which can impact both wild and farmed species, leading to serious economic, ecological, and health issues.
The field draws on various disciplines, including parasitology, immunology, microbiology, histopathology, and molecular biology, to study disease mechanisms and how fish interact with infectious agents. Disease outbreaks in fish may stem from infections, poor environmental conditions, overcrowding, or insufficient nutrition. Among these, infectious diseases pose the greatest threat, caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, each differing in severity, transmission methods, and environmental resistance.
Viral infections, such as those from IHNV or KHV, can rapidly spread and cause high death rates, particularly in hatchery environments where treatment options are limited. Bacterial diseases, triggered by agents like Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio anguillarum, or Edwardsiella tarda, often enter through damaged skin or gills, causing ulcers, bleeding, and internal organ damage. Fungal diseases, like those caused by Saprolegnia, are usually secondary infections that develop when fish are already weakened. These fungi attack the skin and gills, forming cottonlike lesions and damaging tissue.

Fish and shellfish seed rearing, a crucial branch of aquaculture, involves the controlled breeding, nurturing, and development of aquatic organisms—primarily fish and shellfish—from their earliest life stages. This process ensures a sustainable and reliable supply of high-quality aquatic seed stock, especially vital in regions facing declining wild fisheries.
Seed rearing acts as the intermediate stage between hatching and grow-out. It focuses on the careful management of larvae or juveniles until they grow large enough to be transferred to grow-out systems such as ponds, cages, or pens. The main goal is to enhance survival rates, promote healthy growth, and produce robust fry or post-larvae that can thrive in commercial farming conditions.
In aquaculture terminology, “seed” refers to young aquatic organisms—fish fry, fingerlings, or shellfish post-larvae—sourced either from hatcheries or natural environments. These early-stage organisms are highly vulnerable to environmental changes and disease, requiring meticulous care. Success during this stage depends on optimal nutrition, water quality control, and disease management.
The seed rearing process typically begins shortly after hatching. For fish, stages include yolk-sac larvae, free-swimming larvae, fry, and fingerlings. For shellfish such as shrimp, development proceeds through nauplii, zoea, mysis, and post-larvae stages. Each phase demands close attention to water parameters like temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, and hygiene.
Seed rearing can take place in a variety of systems—indoor tanks, nursery ponds, hapa nets, or specialized seed rearing facilities—depending on the species and production scale. In India and other tropical regions, both extensive systems (natural feed-based) and intensive systems (involving formulated feeds and aeration) are widely practiced. Innovations such as biofloc technology, probiotics, and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) have significantly improved outcomes.

Cage and pen systems are increasingly utilized in the rearing of fish seed, especially for coldwater and hill stream species. These systems provide controlled environments that facilitate optimal growth and development of fish from hatchery or wild-caught seed to pre-grow-out sizes before their eventual transfer to growout units or release into the wild. Cages are enclosed structures typically constructed from netting and supported by a floating or fixed framework made of bamboo, wood, or metal. These are deployed in sheltered areas of lakes, rivers, estuaries, or reservoirs. Cages allow continuous water exchange, ensuring fresh, oxygenated water while confining the fish.
• Structure: Floating or fixed; made of durable netting.
• Water flow: Allows free exchange with the surrounding water.
• Application: Ideal for pre-grow-out rearing.
• Advantages: Easy monitoring, efficient space use, reduced land requirement.
Pens are partially enclosed sections of a natural water body, demarcated using netting or barriers. Unlike cages, pens are bottom-open systems where the natural substrate remains accessible. Pens are commonly set up in shallow, calm water bodies such as lakes, bays, or slow-moving rivers.
• Structure: Encloses a section of a water body using fixed net barriers.
• Environment: Mimics more natural conditions compared to cages.
• Usage: Suitable for species requiring substrate interaction.
The wider popularity of cage culture as compared to pen culture may be due to its greater flexibility in terms of siting the structures. For example, cages may be installed in bays, lagoons, straits, and open coasts as long as they are protected from strong monsoonal winds and rough seas. Floating cages can also be set up in deep lakes and reservoirs, and in rivers and canal systems, and even in deep

Nursery rearing of bivalves and molluscs serves as an essential transitional phase in shellfish aquaculture, linking hatchery production to grow-out farming. During this stage, juvenile bivalves, called spat, or young molluscs are carefully raised in controlled or semi-controlled environments to promote their survival, healthy development, and preparation for transfer to open water farming systems. In India and Southeast Asia, common species include edible oysters (Crassostrea spp.), green mussels (Perna viridis), and clams (Meretrix spp.), while some molluscs such as abalone and gastropods are cultivated in specialized nursery setups. This nursery phase begins when larvae settle and transform into spat, typically measuring between 0.3 and 1 mm. These young shellfish are especially sensitive to changes in the environment, predators, silt, and diseases. To protect them, they are reared in nursery systems like upwelling or downwelling tanks, raceways, or floating mesh containers in clean coastal waters. Some hatcheries use land-based tanks equipped with filtered seawater and aeration. Optimal nursery conditions include maintaining water temperatures between 24 and 30°C, salinity levels of 25 to 35 ppt, and dissolved oxygen above 5 mg/L. Preventing biofouling through regular cleaning of nursery equipment is critical, as fouling can restrict water circulation and feeding. The spat feed by filtering microalgae such as Isochrysis, Chaetoceros, or Skeletonema, which are either supplied as live feed or cultivated within the nursery environment. The nursery period usually lasts 3 to 6 weeks, varying by species and growth rate. By its end, the spat reach 5 to 10 mm in size and are ready for transfer to grow-out systems like racks, rafts, poles, or bottom culture. Successful nursery rearing improves survival rates, ensures more uniform growth, and boosts the overall efficiency and sustainability of mollusc farming.

Integrated fish farming is based on the concept that ‘there is no waste’, and waste is only a misplaced resource which can become a valuable material for another product. In integrated farming, the basic principles involve the utilisation of the synergetic effects of inter-related farm activities and the conservation, including the full utilisation of farm wastes. It is assumed that all the constituents of the system would benefit from such a combination. However, in most cases, the main beneficiary is the fishes which utilises the animal and agricultural wastes directly or indirectly as food. As integrated farming involves the recycling of wastes, it has been considered an economic and efficient means of environmental management. Integrated fish farming, also known as rice-fish culture, is an age-old practice that combines aquaculture and rice farming. This method has gained renewed interest due to its potential to increase agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Fish–vegetable integrated farming, commonly known as aquaponics, merges aquaculture (fish cultivation) and hydroponics (soilless plant cultivation) into a unified, self-sustaining system. In this closed-loop setup, nutrient-rich water from fish tanks—containing waste primarily in the form of ammonia—is circulated through plant beds. Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia into nitrates, which are then absorbed by the plants. In turn, the purified water flows back to the fish tanks, creating a balanced environment that reduces waste and supports year-round production of both fish and vegetables. The success of this system depends on maintaining equilibrium between fish density, feed levels, and plant biomass. Common fish choices include tilapia, catfish, carp, and ornamental species, all of which adapt well to variable temperature and pH conditions. Lettuce, leafy vegetables, herbs (such as basil and mint), and vining crops (like tomatoes and cucumbers) flourish in this nutrientrich water. By pairing robust fish with quick-growing, high-value crops, farmers can boost productivity and income. One major benefit of aquaponics is efficient water use. These systems use up to 90% less water compared to traditional soil farming or separate fish ponds. Because the system recirculates water and prevents run-off, losses from evaporation or transpiration are minimized. Additionally, the absence of soil means no exposure to soil-related pests, diseases, or nutrient leaching. Plant roots act as natural filters, helping to remove ammonia, nitrites, and suspended particles, which ensures a healthier environment for fish. These systems are also energy-efficient and scalable. Small-scale units can be installed on rooftops or in backyards to feed households, while larger installations—especially in greenhouses—can support commercial production.

It is estimated that approximately 40% of the total heat generated is released into the atmosphere through the exhaust, 30% is dissipated through the cooling system, and the remaining 30% is used to produce power.

Agriculture lies at the heart of human civilization, providing sustenance and driving economic growth. However, in the 21st century, this essential sector faces unprecedented challenges. Among these, climate change looms as the most pressing, threatening to disrupt global food security. With rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and increasing incidences of droughts and floods, agricultural productivity is under severe strain. Global crop yields are forecasted to decline by up to 25% in some regions if climate change remains unchecked (IPCC, 2021; Lobell et al., 2011). At the core of climate-resilient agriculture lies the ability to breed crops capable of withstanding environmental stresses. This chapter aims to explore how climate-resilient breeding is the future of agriculture. We will review the potential of genomics-assisted breeding (GAB), advances in CRISPR/Cas genome editing, the exploitation of crop biodiversity, and the integration of automated technologies for the development of resilient crops (FAO, 2019; Tester & Langridge, 2010).

1. Temperature Stress: One of the most direct impacts of climate change on agriculture is the rise in global temperatures. Many crops, such as rice, wheat, and maize, are highly sensitive to heat stress, particularly during their flowering and grain-filling stages. Studies have shown that a 1°C increase in temperature can result in a 10-20% reduction in yields for several crops (Wheeler et al., 2020). For instance, wheat production could decrease by 6% for every degree of temperature rise (Asseng et al., 2015). Micronutrient inadequacy, also known as ‘hidden hunger,’ affects one in every three individuals worldwide (FAO, 2013). The growing worldwide population, expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050 (United Nations, 2017), has increased the demand for high-quality food. Unfortunately, the emphasis on food quantity has frequently outweighed issues of food quality. Undernourishment is a major issue, especially in emerging and undeveloped nations where diets are inadequate and largely reliant on staple commodities such as grains (Datta & Vitolins, 2016). Poor lifestyle and dietary choices contribute to food insecurity (Gakidou et al., 2017). To address endemic nutritional deficits, fortification or supplementing techniques have been used (Bouis et al., 2017). Biofortification, which involves breeding nutrient-rich staple crop types, is a low-cost and environmentally friendly way to give important micronutrients. While biofortified staple foods may not contain as many minerals and vitamins as supplements or industrially fortified items, they do help to improve daily micronutrient intake throughout the lifespan (Bouis et al., 2011). Success stories of biofortification include lysine and tryptophan rich quality protein maize won World food prize 2000, Vitamin A rich orange sweet potato won World food prize 2016. It is vital to highlight that biofortification alone cannot completely remove micronutrient deficiencies; however, it can supplement existing initiatives and help vulnerable groups.

Instead of using soil to develop their plants, hydroponic systems submerge their roots in a nutrient-rich water solution or provide it to them on a constant basis. This technique allows for maximum nutrient uptake and faster development by giving plants all the vital elements they require for growth. Hydroponics has many different and extensive uses in horticulture. Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale as well as vine crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers are among the many crops that are grown there.
Furthermore, strawberries, herbs, and even decorative plants like flowers grow beautifully in hydroponic systems.
