The major challenge of the present time in agriculture is implementing sustainable development and meeting the food needs of increasing population simultaneously. Agricultural extension always remains an integral part of National Agricultural Policy. At present, agricultural extension has a crucial role to play in the context of growing demands of agricultural production in a sustainable manner. In this situation extension’s traditional task of transferring and disseminating appropriate technologies and agronomic practices would not be sufficient. There is need to view extension for sustainable development in an institutional strengthening context, both in functional and structural.

Variation is inherent in almost all biological populations. In any science, research work, that is, the study and explanation of development changes in a phenomenon can be theoretical as well as experimental. Thus, in order to have solution to a problem the need arises to collect relevant information (called data) their analysis and interpretation through appropriate statistical tools. Statistical analyses help the biologists to draw appropriate conclusions. For instance, in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) the entomologists are primarily concerned with the estimation of insect-pest population, its distribution pattern over time and space, its relationship/fluctuation in population with the prevailing weather parameters and ultimately its control measure through the judicious use of chemicals, biological control agents and resistant varieties etc. There are two broad modes of collection of data:

Growth enhancement technologies have been widely embraced in the livestock industry to improve growth, efficiency and carcass traits. For over 50 years, estrogenic and androgenic hormone implants were widely used in the cattle feeding industry, and it is estimated that approximately 97 percent of feedlot cattle in the U.S. receive one or more implants during the finishing phase (Barham et al., 2003; Tatum, 2006). There is a large body of literature that indicates the positive growth enhancement effects which implants impart on growing and finishing cattle and producers have extensively used implants to increase live body weight, improve average daily gain and feed efficiency, and reduce the number of days cattle are on feed (Apple et al., 1991; Duckett et al., 1997;Milton and Horton, 1996; Perry et al., 1991). Likewise, there is a growing body of literature that indicates the positive response on growth and carcass characteristics that finishing cattle have to beta-adrenergic agonists. The hog industry, and more recently, the cattle feeding industry have increased utilization of beta-adrenergic agonists to improve the efficiency of production. While the use of Ractopamine hydrochloride (Paylean^®, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, Indiana) has been used extensively in hog production since its approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999, similar pharmaceutical feed additives have only recently been implemented in commercial cattle feeding operations. Beta-adrenergic agonist use in fed cattle has substantially increased following the FDA approval of Ractopamine hydrochloride (Optaflexx^®, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, Indiana) in 2003, and the approval of Zilpaterol hydrochloride (Zilmax^®, Merck Animal Health, Summit, New Jersey) in 2006. The use of both Ractopamine hydrochloride (RH) and Zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) have shown to elicit similar improvements in live weight gain, average daily gain, and feed efficiency as those reported in hormone implants (Allen et al., 2009; Avendano-Reyes et al., 2006; Beckett et al., 2009; Elam et al., 2009; Gruber et al., 2007; Kellermeier et al., 2009; Scramlin et al., 2010). In addition, these compounds have been reported to have profound effects on hot carcass weight, Longissimus muscle area and carcass cutability (Gruber et al., 2007; Hilton et al., 2010; Rathmann et al., 2009; Scramlin et al., 2010; Shook et al., 2009; Vogel et al., 2009). It is because of this that cattle feeders have drastically increased use of beta-agonists since their FDA approval, and a growing portion of the fed cattle population receive a dietary beta-agonist supplement that is provided within the final 20 to 30 days of finishing.

The most important use of R programming lies in importing of data files which serves as input for the analysis work. After the analysis is over by using R codes, operators and functions, the output result must also be exported in form of files. The files are imported in form of csv files (comma separated variable), text files or excel files.

Before going to the actual content of the chapter we have to have an idea about csv files. CSV stands for Comma Separated value. It is used to store tabular data, such as a spreadsheet or database. CSV is delimited text file in which the values are separated by commas. CSV files occupy much less space than excel files and also gets imported in a program at a much faster rate than Excel files. CSV Files also does not manipulate data and stores as it is.

Let us consider that an excel file named as ‘plant’ which stores three variables, named as ph, pd and yield is created inside the folder named as ‘My Data’ which is placed in the desktop. Thus the path of the file is “C:\\Desktop\\My Data\\plant”

To import excel file the package will be readxl and the command will be library(readxl)

1. Determination of qualitative nursery planting materials

1.1 Quality assessment of seedlings

Nursery is a place where young/infant seedlings are kept under intensive care until they are ready for planting. The production of quality seedlings begins with the collection of quality seed, nursery establishment, and after-germination maintenance. The quality of plant propagation structures may not be a qualitatively gradable criterion, but it can be indirectly assessed by their relationship to growth, productivity, and vigour. The Dickson Quality Index (DQI) is very useful for assessing the quality of a specific group of seedlings. This is done by selecting some seedlings at random from that group and computing Dickson Quality Index (DQI).

The Export-Import (EXIM) Committee was constituted in the Seeds Division to deal with application for exports/imports of seeds and planting materials in accordance with the New Policy on Seed Development and EXIM regulation.

The Policy reiterated that all imports of seeds and planting material would be regulated under the Plant Quarantine Order 2003 and amendments made their under, Import licences would be granted by DGFT/PPA on the recommendations of DAC.

A small quantity of seeds sought to be imported would be given to ICAR, or farms accredited by ICAR, for trial and evaluation for one crop season. On receipt of applications for commercial import, DAC would consider the trial/ evaluation report on the performance of the seed and their resistance to seed/ soil borne diseases. DAC is required to either reject or recommend the application to DGFT for grant of import licence within 30 days of receipt.

Agriculture plays a key role in the overall economic and social well being of the country. Though the share of Agriculture in both GDP and employment has declined overtime, Agriculture still forms the backbone and occupies a pride of place :

1. Agriculture contributes 24 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product. GDP was declined from 39 per cent in 1983 to 25 per cent during 1999-2000 and now it 17.32 per cent.
2. Provides livelihood support for more than half of the population in the country. The sector provides employment to 56.7 per cent of the India’s work force.
3. Agriculture has been the source of raw material for industries. Majority of the industries depending on agriculture for their raw materials. Ex: Textile (Cotton, Jute), Sugar (Sugarcane, Sugar beet), Small & medium scale industries like soaps, dyes, medicines, vitamins, preservation of fruits and vegetables, dhal milling, rice husking, Jaggery making, oil crushing, handlooms etc.
4. It provides large part of market for industrial goods viz., seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, implements, machines like pump sets, trucks, tractors, power tillers, sprayers etc.
5. Support roadways, railways, airways and shipways for transport of inputs & produce.

1.1. Definition

Alteration in one or more of physiological processes culminating in a loss of coordination of energy utilization in a plant as a result of the continuous irritation due to presence or absence of some factor or agent.

A plant is said to be diseased when there is a harmful deviation from normal functioning of physiological process (Federation of British Plant Pathologists, 1973).

History of plant breeding
The process of plant breeding takes care of changing or modifying the genetically controlled characters of a particular variety or genotype of a crop. The practice of age-old agriculture uses the process of selection from the existing variability to save a particular quality of seed to grow better crops in the next harvest.
Gregor Mendel who is known as the father of Genetics discovered the law of segregation in the middle of the 1800s. This theory forms the base for the process of plant breeding. The primitive ways used for plant breeding are very different than what modern technology has contributed to the process of plant breeding during the 20th century.
Plant breeding is the science and art of purposeful manipulation of characters of crop species to create new varieties with a set of desired characteristics. Significance of plant breeding has been highlighted especially after the “Green Revolution”.

Cut flowers have become an important segment of modern commercial floriculture because of their high economic value, domestic demand, export potential and employment-generating capacity. This chapter introduces the importance and scope of cut flower production in India and internationally. It examines the economic, social, employment and export significance of flowers and discusses major commercially cultivated crops such as rose, chrysanthemum, gerbera, gladiolus, carnation, lily, orchid, anthurium and tuberose. The chapter also identifies production constraints including labour, infrastructure, cold-chain limitations and market fluctuations, while highlighting opportunities arising from protected cultivation, precision farming, technology, exports and increasing consumer demand.

The association of flowers with mankind is evidenced since dawn of the civilization. For many centuries, flowers play an important role in each and every occasions of life and no social function is considered complete without the use of flowers. Flowers are regarded as the symbol of love, beauty and a gift of nature. In India, there is a popular saying that flowers are associated with man from birth till death.

Floriculture can be defined as a specialized branch of horticulture which deals not only with the cultivation of flowers, foliage plants, climbers, trees, shrubs, cacti, succulents, etc., but also their marketing and production of value-added products from them.

Floriculture is increasingly regarded as a viable diversification from the traditional field crops due to higher returns per unit area. Flowers play a cardinal role in human behaviour and culture, bringing tranquillity and peace of mind. From a symbol of love, flowers have transformed into an industry, generating both income as well as employment. During the past few decades, appreciation of the potential of the commercial floriculture has resulted in the blossoming of this field into a viable agri-business option. The varied agro-climatic conditions prevailing in India and wide availability of natural resources are conducive for production of a large number of flowering and ornamental crops almost throughout the year. The commercial production and marketing of flowers and floriculture products have also increased during recent years due to improved marketing and communication facilities, making availability of these throughout the country and generating a huge employment.

Horticulture is the science and art of production, improvement and utilization of fruits vegetable, ornamental, aromatical medicinal, spices and plantation crops. The word horticulture derived from latin words ‘Hortus’ means garden and culture means cultivation.

The horticulture science can subdivided into different following branches on the basis of product utilization and crop involved.

Pomology: This word is derived from latin word pomus ‘Fruit’ and Greek term logy ‘Science’. The branch deals with the cultivation of fruits called pomology.

Olericulture: It is the branch of horticulture which deals with cultivation of vegetable crops product of which is utilized for culinary purpose after cooking. Olericulture word is derived from the latin word oleris means pot herbs and the english word culture means the culture of succulent vegetables.

Plantation crops: Cultivation and processing of tropical crops grown on a large scale centered around a factory constitute the plantation crops e.g., tea, coffee, black pepper.

Spices crops: These crops are grown and used for providing fragrance and flavouring to various food stuffs e.g., cinnamon, clove, pepper, coriander etc.

Medicinal plants: These plants are rich source of alkaloids and steroids having prophylactic and curative properties for treatment in several diseases e.g., Aloe, Isabgol.

Aromatic plants: Aromatic plants are rich source of essential oil which is used for cosmetic industry e.g., Rose, lemon grass etc.

1.    Total horticulture covers an area of 27.1 m ha and production 305.8 m ton in the country annually (Indian Horticulture Database, 2018).

2.    Fruit crops cover an area of 8.4 m ha and vegetable crops 12.2 m ha. Accordingly, 98.7 m ton of fruits and 182.1 m ton of vegetables are produced in the country annually (Indian Horticulture Database, 2018).

3.    Apart from fruits and vegetables, floriculture industry in India comprising of florist trade, nursery plants, potted plants, seed and bulb products is being observed as sunrise industry.

4.    The developed flower market in the country during 2018 is with area of 0.32 m ha with a production of 2.7 m ton flowers.

5.    The traditional flowers are grown on a large area on a commercial scale. These flowers are mostly grown for loose flower purpose.

6.    Area under cut flowers like rose, chrysanthemum, gladiolus, carnation and orchids is increasing day by day.

7.    Plantation crops are another potential sector with lot of opportunities for employment generation, foreign exchange earnings and overall supporting livelihood sustenance of mankind at large.

The Total Horticulture production of the country is estimated to be an impressive level of 314.87 Million Tonnes during 2018–19.

Production of fruits is estimated to be about 97.38 million tonnes during 2018–2019.

Production of vegetables is estimated to be about 187.36 million tonnes during 2018–2019.

Production of spices is estimated to be about 8.61 million tonnes during 2018–2019.

Plantation crops are another potential sector with lot of opportunities for employment generation, foreign exchange earnings and overall supporting livelihood sustenance of mankind at large.

In short and sweet horticulture supplies quality food for health and mind, more calories per unit area, develops better resources and yields higher returns per unit area.

It also enhances land value and creates better purchasing power for those who are engaged in this industry. Therefore, horticulture is important for health, wealth, hygiene and happiness.

Similar to forest trees these horticultural trees will maintain the ecosphere. They help in transforming the micro climate.

It provides shelter to birds, reptiles and other micro organisms and add to the geo–ecological diversity on the land.

Horticulture means the cultivation of garden plants. The garden plants are comprised of fruits, vegetables, ornamentals etc. The culture covers the operation from raising and planting of saplings to the ultimate use of the products and, as such, it is the most intensive of all the agricultural sciences. However, the concept of growing plants in garden or in an enclosure does not fit well in the changed perspective where large scale cultivation of fruits, vegetables and flowers extending over several square kilometers, in many a place nowadays, delimits the boundary of garden.

Importance of Horticulture

The importances of horticulture are established not only as a source of nutritious foods but also in many other ways which are narrated in the following points:

Social- Due to the long association, the fruits are seen to have a permanent seat in the social life of man. As a consequence, various fruits have acquired their place in art, music, literature, customs and habits of various nations of the world. The description of fruit as symbolic insertion in the poems and literatures, the use of whole fruit plant or part thereof in various social festive and public gathering, and conferring titles to individuals in the name of fruits or naming a region or whole district after the name of a fruit are nothing but an indication of their popularities and social position in various countries.

Horticulture is of immense importance for human beings. Among these major ones are nutritional importance, economic importance, medicinal values, environmental balance, aesthetic value and recreation. These are as follows.

1. Nutritional importance: Healthy body maintains a healthy mind. Human body requires vitamins, minerals, proteins, energy, fibers, etc. for its health. Fruits and vegetables are the chief sources of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, organic acids, fibers, etc. Consumption of fruits and vegetables keeps the human body away from several illnessess and hence are recognized as protective foods; necessary for the maintenance of human health. As per the Indian Council of Medical Research; consumption of at least 120 g of fruits and 280-300 g of vegetables per day per capita is essential. Among vegetables, 80-100 g of leafy vegetables, 100-125 g of tubers as energy source and reamaining as other vegetables. However, the consumption of fruits per capita in India is still low. In countries like Italy, France and USA; the daily fruit consumption is 308, 232 and 223 g respectively. 

The history of gardening in India is older than civilizations of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa. During the pre-Aryan period (around 2500 B.C.), Indians were cultivating flowers and plants of religious significance. Later importance of gardening was not properly understood in India. But presently, importance of landscaping and gardening is realised by planners and landscaping has now become an integral part of any new establishment or property. Due to urbanization and industrialization, pollution has increased considerably and landscaping is one of the best options to reduce the problem. Landscaping is an art of beautifying a piece of land or garden or a landscape with planting materials and non-living materials in order to create a picturesque effect or to imitate nature in that particular land for human use. The importance of landscape gardening can be divided into three categories.

Loose flowers occupy an important position in Indian floriculture because of their extensive use in garlands, Veni, Rangoli, worship, festivals, weddings, decoration and perfumery. Crops such as marigold, jasmine, chrysanthemum, tuberose, rose, crossandra and gomphrena provide livelihood opportunities for small and marginal farmers and rural workers. This chapter discusses the cultural, economic and employment significance of loose flowers, along with value-addition opportunities in essential oils, natural pigments, floral waters, cosmetics and food products. It also examines the national and international scenario, production constraints, postharvest challenges, market opportunities, emerging technologies and prospects for entrepreneurship in the loose flower sector.

Ornamental horticulture consists of floriculture and landscape horticulture. Each is concerned with growing and marketing of plants used to beautify the outdoor environment and with the associated activities of flower arrangements and landscape designs. Ornamental plants provide comfort and peace in our everyday lives. Floriculture is a dynamic, global, fast growing industry comprises of cultivation and trade of cut flowers, loose flowers, potted plants, foliage plants, dried flowers and value added products etc and is becoming popular in both domestic and export markets (Rikken, 2010). In the recent years, ornamental horticulture has emerged as a profitable agri-business in India due to improved living standards and growing consciousness among the citizens to live in environment friendly ambiance. Now-a- days this activity has assumed the commercial status with great potential for generating gainful self-employment among small and marginal farmers. Globalization of the Indian economy and subsequent liberalization of the Seed Act paved the way for the advent of protected cultivation of flowers in the country resulting in increase the production of quality floricultural products witnessing their presence in the international flower markets. The production and trade of floriculture has exhibited considerable increase consistently over the last decade in the country.

Flowers and ornamental plants have been associated with mankind since time immemorial, as they have been used for religious offerings and other social ceremonies. Loose flowers are mostly grown for worship, garland making and decoration. Cut flowers like rose, chrysanthemum, carnation, gerbera, anthurium, orchids and lily are mostly grown for export purposes. Some of the flowers are also edible with their nutritional value e.g. Dahlia tubers, lily, tapioca etc., mainly their roots are rich in starch and even dahlia roots are considered good to cure the cancer.

Agriculture shapes the foundation of Indian economy and despite the fact that there has been vast industrialization in most 60 years; horticulture still occupies a place of significance. In India, approximately 20-25% of the horticulture produce goes waste due to improper post harvest operations which reduces the growers share in the present marketing arrangements. The grower is getting hardly 25-35 paisa of a consumer rupee. The Value addition activities where the fruits and vegetables are processed, that fetches higher remunerative prices of the produce. Such opportunities are presently not available in rural areas but could be created through selective mechanization of agriculture and appropriate post harvest management and value addition to the harvested biomass in the production catchments.The agricultural produce involves operations like cleaning, grading, drying, storage, milling, packaging, transport, marketing and utilization. At the end of each operation, value is added to the product. The lowest and the highest monetary values of a food commodity are, respectively, when it is in raw and fresh form and when it is in processed and ready to consume/eat form. Post harvest and food processing technology are commodity and location specific. It prevent avoidable post harvest losses and adding value to the fresh agro-produces. It also creates opportunities for employment and income generation. Integration of production agriculture with on-farm primary processing is needed to have higher and sustainable production, productivity and better quality end products for domestic and export markets. It would help in reducing rural- urban disparity and ensuring household food and nutritional security for all at an affordable cost. The technology is available and a wide range of tools, machines and equipment are used in post-production of agriculture. The globalization of trade may compel many agro processing industries to rely on an imported technology at a high cost and the advantage of such technology may be availed by a few who have an exclusive business interest. Majority of agriculture-based enterprises will continue to depend upon indigenous technology and, therefore, R&D through public support has to be strengthened to become globally competitive and serve small-scale food processing sector of the country.

Pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] is an important commercial tropical fruit crop under the family Bromeliaceae. Centre of origin of this fruit can be traced back to Brazil, South America. It is eulogized as “Queen of Fruit” or “Friendship Fruit” or “Haven Fruit” or “Golden Queen”. The word ‘Pineapple’ came from the Spanish word “Pina” based on appearance of fruit which resembles a pine cone. Now, pineapple is termed as “Boon for dry land agriculture”. Pineapple is an introduced crop in India and was first introduced in Goa by Portuguese. The largest producer of pineapple is Thailand and India ranks 6th in the world pineapple production. In India, Tripura, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala are the leading pineapple producers. Pineapple is a CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism), monocarpic (each stem flowers only once and dies after fruiting), herbaceous perennial plant (Baruwa, 2013) and is suitable for cultivation in xerophytic conditions (Baraily and Deb, 2018).

The earliest written references to pineapple are found in the reference of Christopher Columbus, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, and Sir Walter Raleigh. They found pineapple growing in the West Indies mainly for for food and wine making. The Portuguese sailors were responsible for early dissemination of the pineapple and introduced it to Saint Helena in 1502. They also carried it to Africa and India by about 1550. Cultivation of pineapple had spread over most of the tropical countries including some of the islands of the South Pacific before the end of the 16th century. Costa Rica, Brazil, China, India, and Thailand are now major growers of pineapple.

India has a substantial livestock population, with animal husbandry acting as a supplementary occupation for about 67% of the rural population. Unlike the commercially oriented farming systems found in Western countries, livestock rearing in India is intricately linked to rural life, where most farmers maintain a small number of animals.
Currently, India’s livestock population surpasses 535 million, which includes 192.49 million cattle, 109.85 million buffaloes, 74.26 million sheep, 148.88 million goats, 9.06 million pigs, and over 850 million poultry birds. Each year, approximately 100 million animals are slaughtered in nearly 4,000 slaughterhouses, resulting in a significant amount of by-products or offals. In tropical regions, a considerable portion of these by-products deteriorates before they can be utilized, primarily due to a lack of knowledge, skills, and infrastructure.
Enhancing profitability in the livestock sector could be realized through improved utilization of animal by-products and waste. Many slaughterhouses presently do not have sufficient facilities to collect and preserve these byproducts in a timely manner. Additionally, retrieving fallen animal carcasses from remote rural areas often presents challenges. The competitiveness of the meat industry can be bolstered by more effective use of by-products. It is estimated that by-products such as skin, pluck, head, feet, and gut can recover approximately 30% and 35% of the live animal value for goats and sheep, respectively. Thus, it is crucial to add value to significant by-products.

Abstract
Urban farming, encompassing practices like rooftop gardening, vertical farming, hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics, involves cultivating, processing, and distributing food in urban areas. With global urbanization projected to reach 60% by 2030, urban farming addresses challenges like rural youth migration, farmland fragmentation, and declining agricultural engagement (currently 49% of India’s workforce). It offers sustainable solutions by producing fresh, pesticide-free food, reducing transportation needs, and combating urban heat island effects. Techniques like hydroponics and aeroponics enable high-yield, year-round crop production in controlled environments, minimizing resource use and environmental impact. Despite high initial costs and skill requirements, urban farming creates employment, enhances food security, and supports urban environmental management, making it a viable alternative to conventional farming in India’s rapidly growing cities.

Introduction
Crop production is weather dependent and almost every crop has been affected by the changing climate. The favourable weather may result bumper production sometimes or even complete destruction of crop may take place under severe weather aberrations. The number of events of sudden aberrations is increasing in a cropping period with the gradual climate change in the recent past. It has been recorded too severe in case of perennial crops. Ready to harvest crops have several times been completely destroyed due to thunderstorm or cyclone in coastal regions or even in main land. Thus, Indian agriculture is being impacted by the climatic changes, and its affect is very much visible now (Aggarwal, 2008). Horticulture sector is not escaped from its’ ill affect and new challenges are coming for production (Singh et al., 2021). The role of adaptation strategy has now been felt crucial (Babu et al., 2021; Banerjee et al., 2022) and importance of agro advisory not only protects the crops from such types of risks but also provide guidance to farmers about the right time for activities in crop husbandry (Adak et al., 2018). Issuance for improving water productivity in water limited areas (Adak and Babu, 2024), micronutrient management for nutrient richness and enhanced yield (Adak et al., 2023; Shukla et al., 2020), rejuvenating unproductive orchards (Shukla et al., 2021; Mishra et al., 2007), disease (Misra et al., 2013; Shukla et al., 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021a,b; 2022; Kumari et al., 2021) and insect pest (Gundappa et al., 2016; 2018) management are becoming very crucial and essential for the benefit of growers.

Vegetable crops, known as protective foods, are important for the healthy diet providing vitamins, minerals, fibre, amino acids and other bioactive compounds. Improvement in vegetable crops is inevitable for better yield, pest or disease resistance, morphological characters, nutritive quality, to adapt with environmental stress, climate change, offseason production, satisfying varying consumer preference etc. Vegetable crops comprise of a large number of species and are rich in diversity. Diverse genetic resources are pre-requisite for any crop improvement programme and vegetable improvement is carried out using exotic introductions, indigenous collection and hybrids/varieties by different breeding systems. Characterisation of genotypes is the description of germplasm giving information on heritable characters so that promising one can be utilised in breeding programme which is the best option for higher yield and other qualities. The morphological, physiological and molecular (biochemical and DNA) traits are called qualitative descriptor and yield, pest/disease resistance, stress tolerance etc are quantitative descriptors that are easily influenced by the environment factors. Apart from the higher production and resistance to biotic and abiotic factors, nutritional traits, flavour, processing qualities that increase the food value is also important in improvement programme of fruits as well as vegetables.

Genetic resources of vegetables available at international and national levels are characterised, evaluated and conserved. With the high diversity of vegetable crops, characterisation and evaluation of genetic resources become a stupendous responsibility requiring extensive infrastructure facilities and varying methods of evaluation (Srivastva, 2012). Genetic resources are characterised on highly heritable traits expressed across the environment. Apart from morphological characterisation, biochemical and molecular characterisation is also conducted that are useful for the identification of biotic and abiotic stress parameters, nutritional and processing quality. Genotype characterisation can be done efficiently using potential of biochemical and molecular markers that help to set up the breeding programme.

Biofertilizers are products that contain microorganisms essential for soil fertility and plant growth when added to the soil. Biofertilizers consist of microbes and living bacteria that promote the fertility of the soil and the growth of plants. Biofertilizers are known to play a number of vital roles in soil fertility, crop productivityand production in agriculture as they are eco-friendly and cannot at any cost replacechemical fertilizers that are indispensable for getting maximum crop yields. Increasing useof chemical fertilizers in agriculture make country self-dependent in food production but itdeteriorate environment and cause harmful impacts on living beings.

Malnutrition remains a pervasive global challenge, affecting millions of individuals across the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite significant advancements in agriculture and food production, a large segment of the population still lacks access to essential nutrients, leading to severe health consequences and perpetuating cycles of poverty and underdevelopment (Müller and Krawinkel, 2005). Malnutrition, defined as the inadequate intake of essential nutrients required for optimal health and development, encompasses both undernutrition and over-nutrition (WHO, 2023). While undernutrition, characterized by deficiencies in energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals, remains a significant concern, over nutrition, manifesting as obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases, is also on the rise, particularly in urban settings (Wells et al., 2020). The consequences of malnutrition are far-reaching, impacting physical growth, cognitive development, immune function, and overall well-being, with long term implications for productivity, economic prosperity, and societal stability (Saunders and Smith, 2010).

Rice, a staple food for more than half of the world’s population, plays a central role in global food security and nutrition. However, conventional rice varieties often lack sufficient levels of key nutrients, such as iron, zinc, vitamin A, and certain amino acids, leaving populations reliant on rice-based diets vulnerable to micronutrient deficiencies and associated health risks (Peña-Rosas and Mithra, 2019). Iron deficiency anaemia, zinc deficiency, and vitamin A deficiency, are among the most prevalent forms of malnutrition worldwide, particularly affecting women and children in resource-constrained settings where rice consumption is high (Dipti et al., 2012)

The profitability of dairy animals depends on milk yield and reproductive efficiency. High-yielding cows require more nutrients to support increased milk production. However, early lactating cows and buffaloes often face a Negative Energy Balance (NEB) due to inadequate energy intake, which hampers their performance. To enhance productivity, it is essential to minimize the extent and duration of NEB. One effective approach is the use of bypass nutrients, which safeguard essential dietary components like fat and protein from rumen fermentation, enabling better digestion and absorption in the lower digestive tract. Additionally, protected starch, chelated minerals, and vitamins can also boost animal performance.
“Bypass Nutrients” are nutrients that undergo minimal fermentation in the rumen, allowing them to remain intact for digestion and absorption in the lower gastrointestinal tract. These slowly degradable nutrients provide a steady nutrient supply to rumen microbes, unlike easily soluble nutrients that lead to sudden spikes in nutrient availability.
Rationale behind the protection of dietary nutrients
The potential benefits of delivering nutrients directly to the intestine in a form available for direct absorption and utilization by the animals are:
1. Prevention of energy losses associated with the degradation and fermentation of nutrients in the rumen, thus sparing available energy for productive purposes.
2. Ensuring that particular nutrients will be available to the host animal in their original form.
3. Taste masking of unpalatable substances.
4. Preventing interactions among nutrients and their oxidation during storage.

Introduction

Environmental Assessment is taken up in this exercise as a rapid assessment technique for determining the current status of the environment and identifying impact of critical activities on environmental parameters. EIA is a relatively new planning and decision-making tool first enshrined in the United States in the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. It is a formal study process used to predict the environmental consequences of any development project. EIA thus ensures that the potential problems are foreseen and addressed at an early stage in project planning and design. Creation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) system is vital to conform socio-economic development projects to environmental safety and thereby ensure sustainable economic development. In view of the fact that development is an ever-growing process, its impact on the environment is also ever increasing, leading to rapid deterioration in environmental conditions. As such Environmental Assessment provides a rational approach to sustainable development.

It also enables us in carrying out Environmental Cost-Benefit Analysis of projects at an initial stage. It is thus a precursor to detailed analysis of environmental impacts, which are taken up only if a need for the same is established.

Introduction Fish oil is the major source of essential Fatty acids (EFA) for humans. Generally, Fish requires three long-chain highly unsaturated Fatty acids (HUFA) for their normal growth and development including reproduction like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6) (Sargent et al. 1993a, 1995, 1997). Like the terrestrial mammals, DHA, EPA, and ARA are all involved in maintaining the cell membrane structure and function of fish but majorly EPA and DHA are considered. Moreover, the EPA and DHA are the major currency as fatty acid for the synthesis of phospholipids, Prostaglandins, and energy etc. However, the biosynthesis of EFA in fish changes in accordance with the relative bioconversion capacity of the PUFA (Linoleic acid and α-Linolenic acid) as shown in figure 01.

Mechanized agriculture is the process of using agricultural machinery to mechanize the work of agriculture, greatly increasing farm worker productivity. The effective mechanization contributes to increase production in two major ways: firstly the timeliness of operation and secondly the good quality of work. The requirement of power for certain operations like seedbed preparation, cultivation and harvesting becomes so great that the existing human and animal power in the country appears to be inadequate. As a result, the operations are either partially done or sometimes completely neglected, resulting in low yield due to poor growth or untimely harvesting or both.

Introduction

Evolution of agriculture in India has an ancient tradition of farming since beginning of human civilization. It has been referred in several ancient scripts including Vedic literature and many other ancient scriptures. Therefore, the study consists methods of cultivation, cropping pattern and status of agriculture sector in economy and in human life is essential for strengthen the agriculture sector during recent period. The agricultural sector in pre-independence India was very prone to breakdown and highly unstable. In other words, there was not stable production rate for various crops. The main reason for this was improper infrastructure for perennial irrigation, non-judicious water use, imbalance use fertilizers and manures, uncertainty and uneven distribution of rainfall throughout the year.

Importance of the farmers

Farmers, who put their labour in crop cultivation, grow crops in the land, supply food to the people generation to generation, most unprivileged and unorganized sector of their communities who used to sale labour. In ancient period, workforces were the actual owner of the land and their produce. Gradually, the farmers became paid workforce in the production system.

In the Sanskrit literature described “agriculture is a divine skill taught by sages to farmers for sustenance of life” and shows the high regard for farmers in society. The farmer was the Annadata that stands for the food provider. Farmers raised fodder for animals. Farmer planted and maintained the orchard of blessed trees after that to the village, maintained pasture land, grew herbs and medicinal plants for supply to the village physician, and fragrant flowers for worship at the temple. Farmers nurtured cattle, which gave milk and carried burdens for the community. Farmers, no doubt were the source of raw materials for all artisans and ever increasing population of the country. But farmers are often neglected, exploited, cheated and deprived from their own legitimate cash out. Farmers’ rights were slowly whittled down at first by foreign invasions, later by changes in the land ownership.

Food safety has become increasingly important with globalization due to various factors such as increased volume and diversity of trade in foods, greater public demand for health protection, changing hazards e.g., resistant microbes, more sophisticated methods for detection of hazards, changes in production and consumption pattern, etc. Food safety contributes significantly to food security as unsafe and poor quality food leads to illnesses as well as food wastage. This leads to a strong need to emphasize not only on availability of food but also ensure that the same is safe.

Livestock production is an integral part of agriculture and plays a significant economic role in most developing countries. It contributes to poverty alleviation, food security and provides elements that are essential to the national economy. Livestock production accounts for 40% of the gross value of the agricultural production globally and this figure is likely to go up, as the demand of livestock products is increasing rapidly with the increase in income and urbanization (FAO, 2012). For poor farmers, animal ownership ensures varying degrees of sustainable development and economic stability. Livestock provide a stable cash reserve independent of inflation and are an important source of traction. Livestock are closely linked to the social and cultural lives of several million people. Quality and quantity of feed is essential for optimum animal productivity. Inadequacy of quality animal feed resources is most often the crucial factor for livestock production. The success of livestock is greatly dependent on continuous supply of good quality nutritious feed at competitive price. Poor nutrition of animals has been identified as the major constraints to animal production across the developing world (FAO, 2000). Feed is the major input cost in animal production system, accounting for 65-70% of the total rearing cost.

The quest for drugs from the sea has yielded a remarkable di versity of natural products mostly from invertebrates such as sponges, tunicates, bryozoans etc. These molecules are either in late stages of clinical trials or have already entered the market. There has been an increased emphasis on marine microorganisms as sources of bioactive compounds over the past decade. Marine bacteria alone constitute 10% of the total living biomass carbon of the Earth’s biosphere and they have unique metabolic and physiological capabilities to ensure their survival in diverse habitats. In the marine environment, some microorganisms associate with living and non-living surfaces and the competition amongst these microbes for space and nutrients leads to the production of bioactive secondary metabolites.

Medicinal Aromatic Plants (MAPs) play a valuable and important role in economic, social, cultural and ecological aspects of local communities the world over.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) “a medicinal plant is plant which, in one or more of its organs, contains substance that can be used for therapeutic purpose, or which are precursors for chemo- pharmaceutical semi-synthesis”.

However, a simplest definition of the medicinal plant would be “Medicinal plants are those plants which are used in official and various traditional systems of medicines throughout the world”.

Other definition could be “Medicinal plants are plants that provide people with medicines - to prevent disease, maintain health or cure ailments”.

In Indian traditions, all the plants in this earth are considered as medicinal [Jivak in Astanga Hriday (Sutra: 9-10)].

Aromatic plants are a special class of plants used for their aroma and flavour. Many of them are exclusively used also for medicinal purposes in aromatherapy as well as in various systems of medicine.

It is an established fact that there is no further scope for horizontal expansion of area under plough, as the per capita land is decreasing every year due to unabated increase in human population. Hence, the future need of food has to be met through vertical expansion i.e. more intensification of agriculture. Nearly 40 million tonnes of nutrients in the form of chemical fertilizers will have to be utilized to feed upon an estimated population of 1.5 billion by 2050 AD (Sakai, 2001). However, presently the crop productivity especially rice and wheat has stagnated not only in India but in other South Asian countries also (Mahajan and Gupta, 2009).

Ornamental plants require the nutrition in proper amount for better growth and yield in open as well as in protected condition. For the cut flower production quality is one of the most important trait and is maintained by the applying the nutrients. Quality is an essential criteria in domestic and export markets. Adequate amount of nutrients in suitable proportions and at right time is the most important factor to improve the plant growth in flower crops. In the present scenario, floriculture is a vast emerging and highly competitive industry. The importance of micronutrient In Indian agriculture the role of micronutrient is well known to all and their use had significantly increased the production and productivity of many crops.

In terms of their contribution to human nutrition, the dairy industry is very important. Since dairy farming has the ability to offer meaningful selfemployment and stable income, it is a dependable source of subsistence for the rural poor. Additionally, it requires less labour and cash to maintain. Dairy cattle feeding directly affect the animals’ ability to reproduce and produce. Therefore, the addition of a mineral mixture is necessary to maximize the animal’s productivity and milk output.

The use of seed processing equipments helps in improving the seed quality by inducing uniformity of physical properties of seeds. This help in achieving optimum plant population and desired economic yield. In certain crops like soya bean, standard seed processing may not give desired seed quality because of sensitivity towards moisture. As general practice seed need to be dried to its safe moisture content of 9 before processing. But in case of soya bean lower seed moisture may result higher mechanical damage after standard seed processing. Drier seed are more vulnerable for mechanical damage. In this practical w try to explore the importance of moisture in seed processing and also need of alternative processing equipments like spiral graders to minimize mechanical damage.

Agricultural production in India is still vulnerable to vagaries of monsoon rainfall in spite of rapid technological advancements like 1) Availability of high yielding varieties 2) Improved crop management practices and increased irrigation availability and effective control of pests and diseases and etc, over last few decades. Majority of Indian farming community which broadly comprising of small and medium farmers are often subject to climate extremes such as droughts, floods, heavy rainfall events, heat and cold waves, frost, hail storms during the crop growing season. The probabilities of occurrence of such climate extremes and associated crop damages and production losses are common in tropical countries like India. Compensation to the resource crunched farmers in the form of crop insurance seems to be the best option for speedy recovery from the losses incurred during the season. It provides security and stability to farm income by protecting the farmers’ investment in crop production and then improves their risk bearing capacities. Crop insurance scheme is based on the fundamental principle of insurance business in which risk is distributed across space and time. For successful implementation of any crop insurance scheme operating presently in the country, proper monitoring of accurate weather parameters at the identified locations throughout the crop life cycle is important. Since these ongoing schemes requires recording weather data right at the locations the existing weather network stations operated by the national agencies which are mostly located at the district head quarters are not adequate to cover the entire cropped areas, where crop is grown and insured. In order to avoid such difficulty, the government allowed few private entrepreneurs for monitoring and supply of daily weather data of high quality by adopting strictly the norms laid out by world Meteorological Organization (WMO) and India Meteorological Department (IMD). Some portion of absorbed fatty acids are degraded in the same way, while others are combined with glycerol transported back to depots. All these reactions are so balanced, that mixtures of fatty acids in the depots, blood and organs tend to remain at equilibrium
condition.

Floriculture has flourished with a considerable growth and a useful crop diversification option, particularly for small farmers over the past three decades. The commercial production of the cut greens has started in India in recent years and has huge demand in the market. They are suited for year round production with low investment and less care and maintenance. Cut greens or fillers are an important component of the floricultural industry and their commercial value depends on vegetative characters, such as stem length, leaf colour, density and side branching. Cut foliages (leaves and stems), which are attractive in form, colour and freshness, are lasting and in great demand. They have various other uses in making attractive fresh floral designs and floral arrangements, such as bouquets, wreaths, decoration of house interiors, etc. Evergreen plants with green, silver or variegated leaves are usually used and species with berries are now also becoming popular. Fillers are critical components in most arrangements as the flowers themselves,used to increase the volume and size of the bunch and provide colour contrast. These floral produce have various other uses in making attractive fresh floral designs and floral arrangements, such as bouquets, wreaths, decoration of house interiors, etc. Colour, freshness, stem length, freedom from pests, fragrance and vase life are important quality aspects of fillers. In the International market, fillers accounts for about 16 percent of the total trade by volume with an annual turnover of more than Rs 800 crores including selling of ornamental leaves, filler flowers, dry and dyed flowers along with berries and capsules. On the contrary, fillers representvery less quantum with poor quality in the domestic market and are unsuitable for cut flower bouquets. Their share in the market is very low and fetches nominal rates.

Real benefits are obtained when we use a participatory approach to curriculum development and reorientation. Primarily, the course contents we provide and the learning will become more effective. If students participate actively in the learning process, then they are more likely to learn and teaching is more likely to be effective. They will have more ownership in the teaching, because their needs will have been identified and hopefully they will also be involved in deciding how their needs can be met. This will increase their motivation, which will help them to learn more effectively.

Crop physiology is the study of the ways in which plant physiological processes are integrated to cause whole plant responses in communities. The subject matter of crop physiology includes the ways in which the knowledge of plant physiology is applied for better management of crops.

Genetic potential of a plant and its interaction with environmental factors decides its growth and development by influencing or modifying certain internal processes. Plant physiology studies about these internal processes and their functional aspects. It helps to understand various biological processes of the plants like photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, translocation, nutrient uptake, plant growth regulation through hormones and such other processes which have profound impact on crop yield. Many aspects of Agriculture can benefit from more intensive research in plant physiology to provide practical solutions in agriculture. Understanding the physiological aspects of seed germination, seedling growth, crop establishment, vegetative development, flowering, fruit and seed setting and crop maturity provides a reasonable scientific base for effective monitoring and beneficial manipulation of these phenomenon’s. Studying this phenomenon with a view to develop better crop management practices forms the subject matter of crop physiology. Later on several research works were carried out to understand the processes like translocation of food materials, their partitioning towards economic yield, storage mechanisms, physiology of flowering, effect of stressful environmental factors on crop growth and development, role of plant growth regulators in increasing the crop productivity etc. All these areas have enriched the knowledge of physiological processes and their role in deciding the crop yield. Crop physiology covers different topics such as seed germination and proper establishment of seedling depends upon various internal and external factors. Knowledge in seed physiology helps in understanding of different physiological and morphological changes that occur during germination. Any deviation in these processes causes seed dormancy. The dormant condition of the seed, bars immediate use of harvested seed for next crop which is important in intensive agriculture. By understanding the causes and effects of this problem, crop physiologists have come up with different methods of breaking the seed dormancy. Nutriophysiology is yet another important area to understand crop physiology. For the healthy growth of a crop, around 16 essential elements are required. Knowledge of nutriophysiology has helped in identification of essential nutrients, ion uptake mechanisms, their deficiency symptoms and corrective measures. It also helps to check the toxicity symptoms of various nutrients.
