Introduction

Persistent use of conventional farming practices based on extensive tillage, especially when combined with removal or in-situ burning of crop residues, has magnified soil erosion losses and swiftly degraded soil resource base. One of the glaring examples for the aforementioned statement is the ‘Dust Bowl’ in the U.S during 1930s in Great plains, where 91 M ha of land was degraded by severe soil erosion (Hobbs, 2007).

One of the primary challenges of our time is to feed growing and more demanding world population with reduced external inputs and minimal environmental impacts (nature paper). Conservation Agriculture (CA) is a set of management practices for sustainable agricultural production without excessively disturbing the soils, while protecting it from the processes of soil degradation like erosion, compaction, aggregate breakdown, loss of organic matter, leaching of nutrients, and processes that are accentuating due to anthropogenic interactions in the presence of extremes of weather and management practices. The organic materials conserved through this practice are decomposed slowly, and much of materials are incorporated into the surface soil layer, thus reducing the liberation rate of carbon as CO₂ into the atmosphere. In the total balance, carbon is sequestered in the soil, and turns the soil into a net sink of carbon. So, CA enhance soil health by improving soil aggregation, reducing compaction through promotion of biological tillage, increasing surface soil organic matter and carbon content, and moderating soil temperature and weed suppression. CA reduces cost of cultivation, saves time, increases yield through timelier seeding/planting, reduces pest and diseases through stimulation of biological diversity, and reduces green house gas emissions.

Machinery development, refinement and adoption for a range of soil and cropping situations will be fundamental in any success to promote conservation agriculture practices. Agricultural machinery or tools, which support conservation agriculture generally refer to the cultivation systems with minimum or zero tillage and in-situ management of crop residues. Minimum tillage is aimed at reducing tillage to the minimum necessary that would facilitate favorable seedbed condition for satisfactory establishment of crop. Zero tillage is however an extreme form of minimum tillage. With the development of direct drilling machines, almost all research work was attempted to define the responses of direct-drilled seeds in relation to soil micro-environments. Different designs of direct drilling machines viz. zero till drill, no till plant drill, strip till drill, and rotary slit no till drill have been developed with controlled traffic measures for energy efficient and cost-effective seeding of crops without tillage. In this paper various issues, challenges and prospects of conservation agriculture in India has been discussed.

Introduction

Consumers are nowadays very much concerned about the food they purchase and consume. Consumer wants the food containing antioxidant properties or can say functional food in safe and stable forms, so that the availability of daily requirements of functional food ingredient must be ensured for normal growth and development of the body. The functional food that can provide a health benefit such as increased dietary fibre, vitamins or minerals to the body. The incorporation of antioxidant compounds acts as an efficient way to fight against reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in our body. As it is already known that the ROS causes oxidative stress and acts as a main trigger for different life threatening chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, aging etc. Therefore, seeing the consumers’ demand for value added products with bioactive ingredients, all small and large scale food industries are taking initiatives to process different types of food (fruits, vegetables, dairy, sea food, animal, microbial products etc.) to extract and purify its active fraction of functional ingredients to valorize different value added products. Functional ingredients may also be derived from different food wastes generated during processing of food. This practice provides additional economic benefits to food businesses. Food industries are also giving importance to different processing methods to extract high quality of functional food ingredients in large quantity because processing method affects the concentration of extracted bioactive compounds. The simple addition of functional ingredients may cause an unwanted and negative change of sensory and texture of food. Therefore, using novel processing technologies such as microencapsulation, the negative changes could be minimized or avoided because these technologies could prevent the inactivation of bioactive ingredients.

The historical backdrop of irrigation is rich and diverse, reflecting the ingenuity of civilizations in adapting to their environments to meet the basic human need for sustenance. Ancient cultures such as the Sumerians, Egyptians, and Chinese were pioneers in developing rudimentary irrigation systems, channeling water from rivers, and constructing canals to nourish their crops. These early practices laid the foundation for the evolution of irrigation, marking a significant transition from relying solely on rainfall to actively controlling water distribution.

The evolution of public administration in the digital age has been anything but linear. As governments worldwide grapple with waves of technological advancement, the boundaries between reform phases such as e-government, e-governance, digital government, and digital governance often blur. Transformations occur unevenly across sectors and regions, with older paradigms coexisting with or even outlasting newer innovations. As Dunleavy, Margetts, Bastow, and Tinkler (2006, p. 216) perceptively observe: “Defining periods in the evolution of any complex system, such as public management systems in advanced industrial countries, is tricky. New developments accumulate while older trends are still playing out and flourishing. Relatively established ideas move from leading-edge countries or sectors to implementation in previous laggard areas, even as the same ideas are being repudiated or reversed in the erstwhile pioneering locations. Moreover, a confusing welter of changes goes on simultaneously, amongst which it is difficult to distinguish ephemeral and hyped-up innovations from those that are fundamental and longerlasting”. This observation aptly captures the administrative reforms’ non-linear and layered character in the digital era. The coexistence of multiple reform paradigms ranging from early e-government initiatives focused on service delivery, to broader e-governance aimed at leveraging technologies for participatory governance, and finally to the strategic integration seen in digital governance illustrates how public sector innovation is cumulative and contested. Digital governance, in particular, cannot replace previous phases. Instead, it serves as their expansion and convergence, wherein technology, data, and citizen-centricity are embedded in policymaking, service design, and institutional accountability. To fully understand the rise of digital governance, examining the broader historical trajectory of administrative reforms is important. The recent advances in embryo transfer protocols have placed these techniques as widely adopted means of developing experimental models to understand complex biological processes such as feto-maternal dialogue, fetal programming and maternal effects on early development. This has noticeably widened the scope of embryo transfer programs which are now not only limited to transferring the genetically superior embryos from donors to recipients for faster genetic improvement, or as only the therapeutic tools in human medicine, but has embarked these techniques as basic research tools in biological research. It is however critical to achieve effective synchronization between donors and recipients along with optimal superovulation in donors to get more number of transferable embryos and subsequently greater conception rates of recipients. For transfer, the embryos are collected Day 6 or 7 post insemination of donors. An overall discussion of sequential steps to achieve successful embryo transfer along with recent advances in the subject area and its possible future scope is discussed in this chapter.

Farm Animals and Horses Urinary system mainly comprises of kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. In farm animals, diseases of urinary bladder and urethra are diagnosed with more frequency than that of kidneys. Renal insufficiency is observed as a sequel in cases of nephritis (pyelo or embolic nephritis), nephrosis or amyloidosis. Urinary diseases are clinically manifested with pain, dysuria, and variation in urine flow (polyuria, oliguria to anuria) and changes in urine (proteinuria, hematuria, hemoglobinuria, myoglobinuria, glycosuria, ketonuria, crystalluria, pyuria, and cellular casts). Decreased body weight, loss of appetite, polyuria, polydipsia and ventral edema are seen in chronic renal failure. Like dogs and cats, urinary tract is not accessible in large farm animals for clinical examination. Trans abdominal palpation of kidneys is feasible in calves and small ruminants. Rectal palpation, urine examination and renal function tests provide diagnostic assistance in the diseases of urinary tract in large animals. Clinical Manifestations Dysuria and abdominal pain are generally seen in urinary tract disease. Acute pain from urinary tract disease is not common. Bones of the animal body makes a skeleton system and helps in locomotion and support soft tissues. The proportion of bones in animal body varies with the animal species as they contribute 12-28 percent in cattle and buffalo, 17-35 percent in sheep and lambs, 50percent in bobby calves, 25 percent in veal calves, 12-20 percent in pigs and 8-17 percent in poultry. As the age advances bones becomes rigid due to ossification of cartilages but in older age bones becomes brittle and fragile due to reduction in bone organic matter.

ABSTRACT

Microorganisms play a key role for the proper running of the ecosystem. They help in nitrogen fixation, which is unique and most necessary property found only in this group. They help in decompositions, mineralization, nutrient cycling, phosphate solubilization, soil aggregate formation, symbioses, parasitism and many other important works. A great emphasis has been given by many scientists to conserve the microbial diversity. Developing human civilization has a great negative impact not only on the above ground biodiversity but also on the belowground biodiversity. This article is an overview, what important and crucial role nitrogen fixers play for maintaining soil and plant health. Nitrogen fixer not only fixes atmospheric nitrogen but also produces growth promoting hormones which are very important for plant growth. 

Indian agriculture is characterized by small farm holdings. The average per capita land holding is speculated to squeeze to 0.10 ha by 2050. The proportion of marginal holdings is to swell more due to the growing population, inheritance laws of division of land and diversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural purposes. But we need around 457 Mt food grains to feed our nation by 2050 as against the present level production of about 257 Mt. Significant changes are also taking place in domestic and international demand for crop products due to improvement in income and standard of living, fast urbanization, and changing life styles and food preference patterns. The food demand is projected to grow annually at 2.0 % for cereals as against 3-4 % for edible oils and pulses, 4-5% for milk and milk products, meat, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, sugar and gur. In contrast, association of emerging problems like declining per capita land availability, increasing nutritional insecurity, decrease in factor productivity, increasing risk with individual farm component, unsustainability of cropping systems and unwillingness of young farmers towards farming lead to an apprehension in achieving the target. Farming system which aims at long term productivity, profitability, recycling of resources and employment generation, comes out as a major strategy to tackle all such problems. In farming system, various components of farming are integrated based on the cardinal principles of minimizing the competition and maximizing the complementarity between the enterprises so as to improve productivity and profitability as well as resource conservation along with maintenance of the environment. A survey conducted by the AICRP on Integrated Farming Systems indicates existence of 19 predominant farming systems with majority (85%) as crop + livestock (Gangwar and Ravisankar, 2014). Crop dominant farming systems are existing in most of the states such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, North-East, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal while livestock dominant systems, are present in Rajasthan and Parts of Gujarat. West Bengal, parts of Odisha and Assam states have the fisheries as a major source of income to the existing farming systems. The scope for promotion of horticulture (fruit) based systems exists in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, parts of Uttar Pradesh and in Sikkim while plantation dominant systems, are available in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala. Further, the contribution of crop and livestock to gross income of existing farming systems in 732 marginal households in 30 districts of 20 states in various NARP zones of India indicates that in majority of the place crop component contributes more than 50 % while at few districts such as Samba (Jammu), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Mehsana and Panchmahal (Gujarat), livestock component contributes either equally or more. Thus cropping systems play a pivotal role in most of the farming systems of India.

Plants are used for many purposes apart from food such as industrial products like perfumes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, food additives, cosmetics and also for rectifying the side effects of allopathic medicines, etc. Interest was taken in the chemical constituents of plants in the very early days of modern science. Plants were used for very many purposes besides providing food, such as for treating medical ailments and for dyeing in textiles.

To the agricultural chemists, any biological organism is ultimately constituted from the elements like C, H, O, N, P, Ca, Mg, S etc. Two or more elements combine to form complex organic compounds such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, enzymes, alkaloids, glycosides, organic acids and many more complex compounds. These biomolecules can be classified into two main major metabolites. (1) Primary metabolites and (2) Secondary metabolites.

Pulses are annually grown leguminous crops that yield one to twelve grains/ seeds within a pod, and are often promoted in diet owing to their low cost and many beneficial nutritional effects (Craig 2009). The United Nations general assembly has declared 2016 as the international year of pulses (Oyeyinka et al. 2016). The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) describes pulses as the crops that are harvested only for dry grain. This definition excludes crops that are harvested green as food sources (such as green beans and green peas), crops that are used only for sowing purposes (such as alfalfa and clover) and crops used primarily for oil extraction (such as peanuts and soybean). India is the largest producer (around 25%) of pulses in the world and the Indian subcontinent covers the leading area in terms of consumption of pulses. It was also suggested that India can also increase the production output by 30%, considering a rise in government support prices for stimulating the growth of pulses and in case of a normal monsoon season (FAOSTAT 2008). The mainly grown pulses in India include mungbean (green gram), chickpea (Bengal gram), urd bean (black gram), lentil (masur), pigeon pea (arhar), cowpea, horse gram and peas (Tiwari and Singh 2012). In the western countries, nowadays pulses are one of the preferred food sources of the population, owing to ideological reasons and interest in vegetarian diet.

Introduction 
India’s digital governance journey represents a transformative reimagining of public administration in the 21st century. The integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into governance structures has enabled a paradigmatic shift from hierarchical, rigid, and often exclusionary bureaucratic systems to more responsive, transparent, participatory, and citizen-centric governance mechanisms (Bhatnagar, 2004; Madon, 2009; Singh, 2013; Rao et al., 2020). This shift aligns with global trends in public administration, where digitalization is seen as a means to enhance state capacity, citizen engagement, and administrative efficiency. India’s progress in this domain is evidenced by its improved performance in international indices. For instance, the United Nations E-Government Development Index (EGDI) 2022 places India 105th out of 193 countries, with notable improvements in the Online Services Index (OSI) and Human Capital Index (HCI), making it one of South Asia’s top digital governance performers despite a recalibrated drop in global ranking (UN DESA, 2022). In the Network Readiness Index (NRI) 2023, India stood at 65th among 134 countries, reflecting advancements in digital infrastructure, skills, and public digital platforms like Aadhaar and UPI (Portulans Institute, 2023). However, challenges persist, as highlighted by the ND-GAIN Index, which underscores India’s vulnerability due to digital inequality and climate-sensitive infrastructure (Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative, 2023). These performance indicators reflect a dual narrative: India is at the forefront of digital public innovation, yet its trajectory remains marred by barriers to inclusivity, last-mile service delivery, and institutional adaptability. The conceptual framework of digital governance in India encompasses key principles and mechanisms that collectively aim to bridge these gaps and foster a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Digital governance extends beyond mere e-Governance or ICT deployment; it refers to the strategic, integrated use of digital tools to transform governance models, improve service delivery, enhance transparency, and facilitate citizen

Stabilizers and emulsifiers are used in small quantities but have major effects on the structure and quality of ice cream. This chapter explains the differences between these two functional ingredient groups and describes their roles in controlling water mobility, fat destabilization, air-cell stability, texture, meltdown, and heat-shock resistance. It discusses commonly used stabilizers and emulsifiers, their individual characteristics, and the advantages of using blended systems. Particular attention is given to formulation balance and the defects that may arise from incorrect selection or dosage, including gummy texture, weak body, poor meltdown, and structural instability. Practical guidelines help manufacturers select and use these ingredients effectively for consistent product quality.

The concept of Self Help Group (SHG) has its roots in rural areas and it has been mooted along the rural poor to improve their living conditions. Though it is applicable to both men and women in our country, but it has been more successful among women and they can start economic activities for improving their livelihoods through SHG movement. Self Help Group (SHG) is a small voluntary association. It is informal and homogenous group of not more than twenty members. SHGs consist of maximum 20 members because any group having more than 20 members has to be registered under Indian legal system. That is why, it is recommended to be informal to keep them away from bureaucracy, corruption, unnecessary administrative expenditure and profit motive. In fact, it is a home grown model for poverty reduction which simultaneously works to empower and shape the lives of its members in a better way. Groups are expected to be homogenous so that the members do not have conflicting interest and all the members can participate freely without any fear. SHG movement has triggered off a silent revolution in the rural credit delivery system in India. SHGs have proved as an effective medium for delivering credit to rural poor for their socio-economic empowerment. In the development paradigm, SHG and micro-finance has evolved as a need-based programme for empowerment and alleviation of poverty to the so far neglected target groups (women, poor, deprived, etc.).

Abstract

In biocatalysis, isolated enzymes, enzyme mixtures, immobilized enzymes or microbes (enzymes that are still present within the living cells) are used to perform chemical transformation of organic compounds into novel compounds. Both in academia and across chemical and pharmaceutical industry, biocatalysts are used as isolated preparations or in whole cell format or as recombinant proteins produced in alternate host cells. Biocatalysts catalyze novel small molecule transformations that are usually difficult or impossible using traditional synthetic organic chemistry. Biocatalysts exhibit high chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity towards their substrates. As a result, the use of biocatalysts during chemoenzymatic synthesis minimizes the issues of unwanted side-reactions such as decomposition, isomerization, racemization and rearrangement. The process of biocatalysis has become an important tool in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and enantiopure compounds. Biocatalysis offers a more sustainable, efficient, and less polluting methods for the production of APIs and advanced pharmaceutical intermediates. Biocatalysts have received tremendous attention in pharmaceutical industry because they typically catalyze reactions under mild conditions, so they do not consume much energy or emit much greenhouse gas. Biocatalysts are currently employed for the development of products in different fields, such as pharmaceuticals or intermediates of their production (e.g., antibiotics, statins, and enantiopure building blocks), fine chemicals (e.g., amino acids and vitamins), and food ingredients (e.g., sweeteners, lipids, and nutraceuticals). However, it would be helpful for the pharmaceutical industry to take advantage of developments in biochemistry, molecular cloning, random and site-directed mutagenesis, advanced tools for enzyme discovery, enzyme-directed evolution, high-throughput laboratory evolution techniques for biocatalyst optimization, immobilization, and fermentation technology to gain access to a new class of biocatalysts (enzymes), cells and other microbes.

Abattoir is a structure meant to recover the edible portions of slaughtered animals for human consumption. These structures are used to cater the need of domestic purposes as well as some of them are utilized for export purposes. The demand of Indian meat and meat products is increasing day by day not only in our country but also around the globe. Therefore, millions (about 15 million cattle and buffalo and 1 million sheep and goat) of food animals are slaughtered every year to meet the current demand. Such large scale slaughter of food animals generates huge amount of wastes but due to lack of proper sanitary measures in majority of slaughter houses of our country their wastes not only deteriorate the hygiene of meat and meat products but also pose a potential threat to the environment. Therefore, it is an urgent need for safe and proper disposal of slaughter house and meat processing waste for food safety and human health. It is also important to protect the environment and to improve the quality and hygiene of meat and meat products.

ABSTRACT

The present paper describes application of synergistic action of microalgae viz., Spirulina platensis, Chlorella vulgaris, and Oscillatoria princeps coupled with state-of-the-art microbial biotechnology (that involved strains of Bacillus subtilis, Nitrobacter winogradskyi, Aspergillus flavus, and A. niger) developed by Biotechnology Resource Centre (BRC), Mumbai for treatment of secondary liquid effluents from a gelatine manufacturing industry. The growth of mixed cultures of selected microbial and algal species was measured respectively in terms of Colony Forming Units (CFUs) and Optical density (O.D.) of the culture. The results were indicative of efficient degradation potential of the proteinaceous liquid effluents. Moreover their BOD and COD loads reduced by 30.75 % and 84.10 % respectively after the treatment. Furthermore, the bio-safety of algal biomass cultured in selected effluents as feed supplement was tested on Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus). Mice in treated group didn’t exhibit any observable adverse effect on their growth or on their reproductive performance. In fine, the liquid effluents of gelatine manufacturing industries were polished along with production of probiotic food supplement.

Self Help Group (SHG) and micro finance may be said a recent movement and the literature on SHG and micro finance is relatively one of the youngest. Review of past works in the field of SHG and related issues since 1995 has been considered, which helps to identify the research gap. Therefore, studies related to SHGs were reviewed and presented covering various aspects comprehensively.
 
2.1 Profile of the SHG Members
 
Hemalatha (1995) conducted study in Haryana and found that majority of women taking up pottery activity were illiterate, Sirki making women’s education ranged from illiteracy to primary level and bakery unit were illiterate.

The basic purpose of the immune system is to provide defense to the body from various types of infections. But, sometimes, the system which is aimed to provide protection become damaging or even life-threatening. There are situations when immune response against harmless and inert antigens is exaggerated and cause diseases.

The emergence of Large Language Models has enabled the development of virtual teaching assistants capable of providing students with continuous, interactive, and personalized academic support. This chapter examines the role of LLM-powered chatbots and intelligent tutors in modern education. Unlike conventional digital resources, AI teaching assistants can engage learners through natural-language dialogue, explain difficult concepts, provide examples, generate practice activities, offer hints, and deliver immediate feedback. They can support individualized learning pathways by adapting explanations and learning materials to student needs, performance, and pace. The chapter explores applications in tutoring, assessment, academic guidance, interactive textbooks, student support, and self-directed learning. AI assistants can also reduce routine teacher workload by supporting activities such as grading, question generation, content recommendation, and classroom analytics. However, challenges remain concerning hallucination, accuracy, privacy, algorithmic transparency, inclusivity, and the appropriate balance between automated assistance and human mentorship. Large-scale and long-term evidence is still needed, particularly in diverse and low-resource educational settings. The chapter therefore emphasizes human–AI collaborative instruction, educator training, ethical integration, and responsible deployment of intelligent teaching assistants.
