Protected Cultivation

Protected cultivation (PC) may be defined as the “modification of the natural environment to achieve optimum plant growth” (Singh, 2005). Modifications can be made to both the aerial and root environments to increase crop yields, extend the growing season and permit plant growth during periods of the year not commonly used to grow open field crops. PC may also indicate comprehensive systems of ‘Controlled Environmental Agriculture’ in which all the aspects of natural environment are modified for maximum plant growth and economic return.

Breeding

Pomegranate is genetically heterozygous material thus there is lot of variability existent in the nature. Therefore there is scope for crossing two selected genotypes. Raising of hybrid population and identification of superior types for following major constraints in its successful cultivation.

    1.    Cracking and splitting of fruits is a severe menace due to variation in atmosphere, humidity. 
    2.    Resistance to fruit borer and stem borer. 
    3.    To develop varieties having high sugar (16%) and less acid (1.5 %).
    4.    All varieties bear some sterile flowers. This reduces the yield appreciably. Selection of varieties bearing high percentage of fertile flowers should be achieved.

At present, approximately 1.4 million of the world’s species are described, but  majority are still unknown to science. Plant genetic resources have gained global attention in  recent past by agricultural and environmental institutions. Conservation and use of genetic resources attracted considerable attention. Value of biological diversity in economic terms is very important for human society. India is one of the major centers of diversity in world. A small part of plant and their culture is considered as floriculture. India is bestowed with varied types of agro-climatic conditions conductive for growing a wide variety of ornamentals including flowers. India has a rich heritage of ornamental floriculture.

In rural and hilly areas there are different types of colourful flowers and foliage at different seasons round the year. All these colourful flowers and foliage are wasted under natural process. In spite of aesthetic beauty, all these natural resources are totally unutilized due to unawareness of their use. All these flowers are available in wide range of colours but mostly dominated by yellow. The entire seasonal colourful vegetations can be converted into value added products by using simple dehydration technique developed at National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow. The technique is  suitable for dehydration of flowers and foliage. Present chapter will highlight how dehydration techniques can be utilized for preparation of value added products from seasonal unutilized floral vegetation of rural India.

Morinda citrifolia L is a unique horticultural plant belonging to Rubiaceae family. It has a tremendous demand because of its high medicinal value. Increase in demand has led to commercial farming of the tree. Noni is an ideal plant for mixed farming with other horticultural plantations. There is concurrent efforts to select early bearing plants with big size and fruits.  Noni can be grown in any type of soil under adverse climatic conditions.  Crop Improvement, nutritional requirement, water requirement, pest and disease management are the research priorities in Morinda citrifolia.

Indian Noni (Morinda citrifolia) is popularly known as Indian mulberry belongs to Rubiaceae family.  It is also called great Morinda, Cheese fruit, Mouse’s Pine Apple, Nono, Jumbie bread fruit, Hog apple. Noni was one of the most widely used medicinal plants in Polynesia prior to European contact, and continues popular among modern population. Noni is commonly known as canary wood in Australia, Kura in Fijii, mora de la India in spanish, nono in Tahiti and Nin in Marshall Island. Medicinal values of Noni were known to man many centuries ago. Uses of Noni were mentioned in Indian ethnopharmacology and ayurvedic medicines. Noni is grown as medicinal plant in most of  South Indian temples as sacred plant like basil (Tulasi). In India, it is called by several names in different  regional languages like nuna, manjanathi, manjanuna in Tamil,  molugu, mogal, bundamaddi in Telugu, kakaiplam, kattapitalavam, mannanatti in Malayalam, tagatemara, haladipavete in Kannada, Ach Al in Hindi, Paphan, Achchhulca in Sanskrit, Aseti, Nagkura, Mundari solidaru in Marathi.

Plant genetic resources are the key components of crop improvement because of development of precision breeding system through biotechnological approaches as well as conventional system of breeding like selection and hybridization. Breeding system of hybridization is replaced by cybrid technology that facilitates transferring more qualitative and quantitative traits rapidly within incompatible genotypes. Aonla is mainly recognized for its high nutritive, medicinal and therapeutic properties. It contains high amount of vitamin-C (500-1500mg/100g), it is also rich in pectin, iron, calcium and phosphorus. Dried fruits of aonla can be used in curing haemorrhage, diarrhea, chronic dysentery, diabetes, jaundice, dyspepsia and cough. Recently, aonla gained more popularity in arid and semi- arid region of the country because of its hardy nature, prolific bearing capacity and ability to grow under various adversities as a remunerative crop (Shukla et al.2002). Aonla is the main ingredient of Chavanprash and Triphala powder, used for curing different   human ailments. Fruit contains a chemical substance gallic acid and leucoanthocyanin, having antioxidant property.

Ber (Chinese date, Chinese fig or bore) (Ziziphus xylopyrus) is an important minor fruit of India. It is a hardy fruit tree cultivated all over India and also known as poor man’s fruit. It is widely cultivated in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Ber does well even under marginal growing conditions and provides quality yields at low cost (Shukla, 1996). Fruits are eaten fresh but the other forms like dried, candied and squash can also be prepared from ber. Stem bark, root and leaves have medicinal values. Leaves of ber are used as fodder in dry regions. Ber tree is a host plant for rearing the Tachardia laccad, a lac insect (Sharma and Kore, 1990).

Lilies, both Asiatic lilies and Oriental lilies, along with their hybrids are cultivated in very small scale in India, but are classified under high value crops (based on per stem value). Lilies are also capital intensive crops, in terms of high cost of infrastructure required for protected cultivation and bulbs which are imported. This article deals with growing conditions, varieties and other cultural aspects, as well as, practical tips from field conditions, from areas where Liliums are commercially grown in India.

Lilies are grouped under “high value flowers” in commercial floriculture parlance and are generally regarded under minor crops in production terms (on quantity produced or on area under production or on per sq.meter yield per year basis).  Lily is in fact a more productive and lucrative crop, specifically so in terms of income (on per sq. meter per year basis) than any other cut flower grown for commercial purposes in the open or protected cultivation in India.

Mahua botanically known as Bassia latifolia Roxb, (Hindi name: Mahua, Family: Sapotaceae) is an economical and multipurpose tree. Its flowers, fruits and oil obtained from seeds are eaten in various ways. Corolla commonly called mahua flowers is a rich source of sugar, containing appreciable amount of vitamins and minerals. Flowers are used for preparation of distilled liquors and potable spirits. Flowers and spent flowers (after fermentation) are also used as feed for livestock. Fruits are eaten as raw or cooked. Fruit pulp can be used as a source of sugar for alcoholic fermentation, whereas dry fruit husk can be used for preparation of absolute alcohol. Seed is a good source of oil. Amount of oil obtained from seeds is higher than many oil seed crops and oil seed-bearing trees. Oil obtained from kernel is used for edible purpose and used for preparation of vegetable oil. In Mahua oil, linoleic and unsaturated fatty acids are found which are useful for cardiac patients because it reduces cholesterol content in blood serum. Mahua oil is used in manufacture of soap, lubricating grease, fatty alcohols and candles. Mahua fat is a rich source of palmitic acid used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Mahua seeds can also be used for preparation of defatted flour, which has great potential in bakery products. Saponin obtained after extraction has industrial and commercial applications. Cake obtained after extraction of oil is used as manure and has insecticidal properties. The trees provide quality timber wood for various uses. Every part of Mahua yields an economic product of great potential value; hence it is a very useful tree.

Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is one of the most popular perennial vegetables grown in South India. It is commonly grown as a unique vegetable. Its fruits, leaves and flowers are equally useful. They are cut into slices and used in the preparation of a number of food items. Moringa oleifera is the most widely cultivated species of a monogeneric family, the Moringaceae. The tree is indigenous to North West India. It is found wild in the sub Himalayan tract from the river Chenab eastward to the Sarda and in Tarai tract of Uttaranchal in India. Moringa is native to the sub-Himalayan tracts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. This rapidly growing tree (also known as horseradish tree, drumstick tree, benzolive tree, kelor, marango, mlonge, moonga, mulangay, nébéday, saijhan, sajna or Ben oil tree, radish tree, West Indian ben), was utilized by ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. It is now widely cultivated and has become naturalized in many locations in tropics. It is a perennial softwood tree with timber of low quality, which for centuries was advocated for traditional medicine and industrial uses. The name drumstick is derived from the pod shape resembling slender and curved stick used for beating the drum. Fruits also resemble the siliqua of radish and hence the name “radish tree”.

Euphorbiaceae is a large family that includes 310-320 genera and 7500 species (Walters and Keil, 1996). Two centers of distribution for this family are tropical America and tropical Africa. The family has an extremely variable life span and habits are found as annual and perennial herbs, vines, succulents, shrubs and tall trees. Members of the Euphorbiaceæ are found in many habitats, from deserts to rain forests. Euphorbiaceae family has genera used as unconventional foods

In Mexico, 826 species under Euphorbiaceae family are found with 50 genera including those introduced from elsewhere and cultivated. A subfamily with a larger number of genera is Acalyphoieae (16), while Euphorbioideae has more species (306), and Crotonoideae has more specific endemism (Martinez-Gordillo et al, 2002). Some of these plants are used in traditional medicine, in oil industry, as ornamental plants, and as food additive. A few examples of its uses include edible wax from Euphorbia antisyphilitica (candelilla) that coats fruits and vegetables to retard water evaporation. Jatropha dioica is a small shrub that is used in traditional medicine and Euphorbia pulcherrima (Poisenetta) an ornamental plant.

The effect of oil sludge on the growth and performance of Celosia argentea (L.) were evaluated using four levels of pollution viz: 0%; 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75% of the 6kg soil and three levels of N.P.K. fertilizer (20:10:10) viz: low level (0.005 kg), normal level (0.01 kg) and high level (0.015kg). These treatments were imposed after the soil analysis were carried out on the site.  The results obtained show that pollution has a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the growth and performance of Celosia argentea, despite the different levels of fertilizer application with second level of pollution (0.25%) being the critical point. Thus, pollution retards the growth of this crop drastically beyond the critical level with Celosia argentea showing more tolerance to pollution at the post-application treatment than the pre-application treatment.

It is therefore suggested that land users should not embark on cultivating land that has an oil sludge pollution level beyond 0.25% of soil.

My first experience with Colocasia gigantea (Blume) Hook. f. (Araceae) was one of personal cultural food use. I recently came to Hawai‘i for my Ph.D. studies, and although I am Vietnamese, it was in Hawai‘i that I began experiencing many Vietnamese foods I never knew as a child growing up in the northeastern U.S. I thank the Vietnamese immigrants in Hawai‘i that became my aunties and uncles from whom I learned a great deal about my roots and the food of Vietnam. I listened to their stories and teachings while we ate together at holiday and community events, reflecting on my childhood, and considering the effects of globalization on the movement of people and plants, I have come to understand the extraordinary significance of that seemingly mundane first experience of eating C. gigantea. In this paper, I describe the botany, ethnobotany,  including a case study of C. gigantea usage in Hawai‘i and the implications for biocultural diversity, and examples for increased utilization of C. gigantea.

India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world. Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi recommends intake of 125g leaf vegetables, 100g roots and 75g other vegetables/ day / adult for a balanced diet. Green leaf vegetables occupy an important place among the food crops as these provide adequate amounts of many vitamins and minerals for humans. Besides this, leaf vegetables are easy to grow and readily fit in any cropping system owing to its short duration. They are rich sources of carotene, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, folic acid and minerals like calcium, iron and phosphorus (Ramdasmurthy and Mohanram, 1984).
 
In nature, there are many greens of promising nutritive value, which can nourish the ever increasing human population. In spite of their nutritional importance, in India, leaf vegetable production is limited to kitchen gardens and market gardens due to various reasons. Although they can be raised comparatively at lower management costs even on poor marginal lands, they have remained underutilized due to lack of awareness and popularization of technologies for utilization.

Mature seed samples of Vigna dalzelliana (O.Kuntze) Verdc. were analysed for proximate composition, total (true) seed protein fractions, amino acid composition, fatty acids profiles, mineral and antinutritional factors. The investigated seed samples contained higher amount of crude protein, crude fat, ash and nitrogen free extractives and constitute 27.33,7.48,6.71 and 50.12g/100g. seed powder respectively. The calorific value of seed material was 377.12  K.cal / 100 g Dm. The essential amino acids, isoleucine, tyrosine and phenylalanine, were present in relatively large quantities. The fatty acid profiles revealed that the seed lipids contained higher concentrations of palmitic and linoleic acids. The seeds are rich in sodium, phosphorous, calcium, zinc, manganese and iron. Anti-nutritional factors, such as total free phenols (8.26%), tannins (6.1875 %), L-DOPA (0.96%), hydrogen cyanide (1.94 %) and phytic acid (7.32%) are present in variable quantities. This paper presents the analytical data on the chemical composition and nutritional potential of Vigna dalzelliana seeds with regard to its suitability as a regular component in human diet.

The North East region represents eight states namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Sikkim consisting 7.79% of the Indian national geographical area. The altitude difference (50m-7000m) coupled with varied physio- geographic and agroclimatic conditions; varying intensity of rainfall (800-12000 mm) and topography harbour various vegetation types of tropical, temperate and alpines zones. In India, there are about 800 plant species used as food plants chiefly  by the tribal population (Singh and Arora, 1978). Out of these about 300 species are prevalent in the northeastern region (Khrasati, 1973, Joseph and Murti, 1981, Singh et al. 1981).

Tribals of various ethnic groups like Khasi, Garo, Monpas, Karbis, Jaintia, Naga, Kuki, Manipuri, Mizo, Chakma, Dafla, Adi, Mishing, Apatani and others are predominant in the various habitats of hilly regions also used to practice “Jhumming” or shifting cultivation. Most of wild fruits are used  in day to day diets of tribal people of the region and are often sold in the local markets.

A nectarine (Prunus persica var. nectarina) is a fuzz less variety of peach. The word nectarine means as sweet as nectar and this is very likely the obvious origin of the name. Though peaches and nectarines are commonly regarded as different fruits with nectarines often erroneously believed to be crossbred between peaches and plums or peach with plum skin. But it is not a cross between a peach and plum. They belong to same species as peaches. The smooth skin of peaches is a minor genetic variation. Fuzziness is a dominant trait of peaches. Occasionally when peach trees are crossed or self pollinated they produce some fruit whose seeds will grow into nectarine trees and others which will be peach trees. Nectarines will some time appear on peach trees, and peaches sometime appear on nectarine trees. It is impossible to tell which seeds from nectarine trees produce nectarine bearing trees, so commercial growers take branches which produce nectarines and graft them on to peach trees. These branches continue to produce nectarine.
 
In appearance, nectarine trees are same as peach trees, and are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Tree size and shape, leaves, and even buds look the same. Nectarines, however, are smaller and smooth skinned (ripe fruits look the same as unripe- the colour does not change significantly,

Jasmine

Jasmine oil and its synthetic substitutes are extensively used in high grade perfumes in the western countries, the main buyers being USA, France, UK, Japan, Holland and Russia. Essential oil production is an export oriented agro industry in Egypt, France, Morocco, Belgium, Germany, Tunisia, Italy, Algeria, China and India. It is also used for perfuming expensive soaps and cosmetics, mouthwashes and dentifrices. 

Jasmine oil is unique and the odour of jasmine cannot be imitated by any known synthetic chemicals. There is hardly any perfume of floral origin which does not contain at least a small quantity of jasmine concrete or absolute. The world production of jasmine concrete is approximately 20 tones/year and India’s production is 2 tones.

Agriculture is the main source of income of the rural masses in India and the disease accounts for more than 30% losses every year. According to a WHO estimate of 1990. There were 25 million cases of acute occupational pesticides poisoning in developing countries each year. ILO 1996 estimates suggests that out of 14% of all known occupational injuries 10% of all total injuries are caused by pesticides. Further more developing countries are a dustbin for the developed countries. More than 20, 000 tonnes of obsolete pesticides are dumped in Africa alone. The biopesticides are amenable to small scale and local production. Presently there is an increased awareness regarding environmental and food safety. The biopesticides as such can be used as an essential and fundamental component of integrated pest management. It helps to manage the disease which are difficult, otherwise to be managed and so also these control the pests resistant to conventional pesticides. Paulitz and Belanger (2001) has reviewed the potential of biological control in green house systems.

During the last 21 years, the scientists and scholars of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) have been working on the design and implementation of projects which could have a large extrapolation domain in respect of imparting a pro-nature, pro-poor, pro-women and pro-sustainable livelihood orientation to technology development and dissemination. I would like to write about a few of the MSSRF initiatives, which have now become state, national and global programmes.

Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana: Strengthening the role of women in agriculture

MSSRF initiated the Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra in 2007 for empowering women farmers, including the widows of farmers who had committed suicide, in areas related to enhancing the productivity, profitability and sustainability of small-scale rain-fed farming. The empowerment measures incorporated access to technology, credit, inputs and market.

1. Introduction

Our Indian traditional medicine depends on herbals which always played an important role in the health problems of many countries. In India, the tribal people are using variety of herbals for effective curing of various ailments. These plants are often used by the local people of that area for treatment of various diseases. Ethnomedicinal studies have offered immense value and opportunities for the development of new drugs. Living close to nature, traditional societies have acquired unique knowledge about the use of wild flora and fauna, most of which are unknown to the people who live away from such natural ecosystem as forests and hills. The hills have been the sources of medicinal plants since the time man realized the preventive and curative properties of plants and started using them for human health care.

Tribal people throughout the world, including India, have developed their own cultures, customs, religious rites, taboos, legends and myths, folk tales, medicine, food, etc., They are the repository of accumulated experience and knowledge of the indigenous vegetation; this can be utilized in tribal development. These days greater emphasis is being laid on this traditional knowledge and on using it in the “bioprospecting” of natural products as a new source of food and medicine.

1. Introduction

Pyrus malus Linn. commonly called as ‘apple’ in English and ‘seb’ in Hindi locally, is a well known tree belonging to family Rosaceae. It is indigenous to Europe and West Asia and grow wild in N.W. Himalayas and also cultivated. The leaves and young aerial parts are useful medicinally1. Leaves contain phloretin which is a natural antibiotic. Crushed leaves are used as temporary treatment for wounds. In Homoeopathy, its use is mentioned for labyrinthine vertigo by Dr. Cooper, in Boericke3.  The plant is a tree growing up to 20 to 40 feet, with spreading branches. The leaves are ovate or oblong ovate, serrate, 2-3’’ long; Petioles ½ to 1’’ in length. The flowers are large, fragrant, pale rose in colour and borne in sub umbellate corymbs. Fruit is a pome and edible.

Chemically the plant is  reported to contain patulin, campesterol, stigmasterol, b- sitosterol, nicotinic acid, phloretin 2- O-glucoside, phlorizin, Gibberellin A 62, melibiose, ostreasterol, 1,28-octacosanediol, pomonic acid and 1,24-tetracosanediol.

1. Introduction

Inflammation have been linked with pathogenesis of many diseases like Cancer, Atheriosclerosis, Neurodegenerative diseases, Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, Arthritis, Cardiovascular diseases, Parkinson’s disease and other deadly diseases (Lee and Weinblatt, 2001). Inflammation can result to genetic defects and immunoregulation and mechanism defects which lead to tissue damage (Jones, 2006). Anti-inflammatory drug was serendipity discovered without thorough investigation and even not effective in term of controlling inflammation and now record several side effect just like other synthetic drugs, thus, safe biological sources are now been considered. Biological sources for active compounds that have medical importance are increase in recent time (Kaboli, 2001). Also, due to the residual side effects of synthetic compounds that form bulk of the materials used for the production of pharmaceutical products. Aspirin can cause stomach bleeding, acetaminophen can cause liver damage Cox-2 inhbitor Vioxx and Celebrex can cause heart problem and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) was reported to contribute to numerous death (Clegg et al., 2006; Wolf et al., 1999; Sing, 1998).

Definition 

Radiation poisoning, also called “radiation sickness” or a “creeping dose” is a form of damage to organ tissue due to excessive exposure to  radiation. The term is generally used to refer to acute problems caused by a large dosage of radiation in a short period, though this also has occurred with long term exposure to low level radiation. Many of the symptoms of radiation poisoning occur as ionizing radiation interferes with cell division.

The clinical name for “radiation sickness” is acute radiation syndrome . A short exposure can result in acute radiation syndrome; chronic radiation syndrome requires a prolonged high level of exposure. A chronic radiation syndrome does exist but is very uncommon;

Many people confuse fortification with the term enrichment. There is a big difference in between these two terms. Fortification means the addition of those ingredients not normally found in a food and it is added to achieve a particular dietary purpose. Lysine may be added to corn products to increase the biological value of the protein. Salt may be iodised to prevent the occurrence of goiter. Breakfast cereals may be fortified with an array of vitamins and minerals to ensure a completely balanced nutritional meal.

In enrichment, the amounts added are designed to meet specific legal standards of minimum and maximum levels of nutrients. It is recognised that in the processing of cereal products that the removal of bran and germ causes a large portion of the vitamins and minerals naturally found in the product to be lost. During World War II an effort was made to correct this deficiency by government endorsement of the enrichment of bread, flour, and cornmeal. Wheat flour, cornmeal, corn grits, bread, ready to eat and uncooked cereals, and macroni products have been enriched with thiamine, ribo-flavin, niacin, iron and in some cases, calcium and vitamin D.

W.H.O. has defined food fortification as “a process where by nutrients are added to foods to maintain or improve the quality of the diet of a group, community or population”.

INTRODUCTION

Adulteration of food consists of substituting it wholly or in part by any cheaper or inferior substance or of removing any of its constituents, wholly or in part, which affects adversely the nature, substance or quality of the food. According to the Indian Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA) 1954, any ingredient which, when present in food, is injurious to health is an adulterant. Thus, according to the PFA definition, many of the food contaminants discussed in the previous section are adulterants and come under the purview of food adulteration.

Adulteration of foods was practised even in ancient times. It was not a serious problem then because business was on a small scale and the transactions involved a large measure of personal accountability. Later, with the increased centralization of food processing and distribution, and corresponding decline in personal accountability, intentional adulteration of food increased. Even in the early nineteenth century, many adulterants were used in articles like pepper, essential oils, vinegar, beverages (coffee, tea, beer, wines), butter, bread, etc. In recent years adulteration of foods has become a serious problem the world over. In western countries there is a rising concern over the safety of the food supply and many remedial actions, both voluntary and enforced, have been taken.

Nipah virus infection is an emerging zoonotic disease first described in 1999 and the virus is under the genus Henipavirus and family Paramyxoviridae. The disease is similar to another emerging zoonotic disease caused by Hendra virus and can spread from its wildlife reservoir to pigs and humans where it causes an often fatal disease. It is a notifiable disease in most countries and to be handled under highest biological security level 4 (BSL-4). In Malayasia an outbreak of viral encephalitis occurred over a 35 week period from September 29, 1998 to 31^st May, 1999 among pig farmers creating considerable anxiety and fear. Of the 265 cases reported to the Ministry of Health in Malaysia, 105 were fatal and the case fatality rate was 39.6%. The outbreak also spread to neighbouring Singapore where 11 workers of an abattoir developed the disease with one fatality. 93% of the reported cases involved those directly in the pig farming industries namely pig farm workers, pig farm proprietors, housewives and family members assisting in the farms. The majority of the cases occurred in those aged 20 and above (92.4%) and actively engaged in pig industry followed by the age group 10-19 years (6.4%). About 82.6% of the cases are male.

Etiology: Henipavirus is a genus of the family Paramyxoviridae and order Mononegavirales containing two members, Hendravirus and Nipah virus. The henipaviruses are naturally harboured by Pteropid fruit bats (flying foxes) and are characterized by a large genome (18.2 Kb), wide host range and their recent emergence as zoonotic pathogens capable of causing illness and death in domestic animals and humans.

The viruses are pleomorphic ranging in size from 40-600 nm in diameter. They possess a lipid membrane overlying a shell of viral matrix protein. At the core is a single helical strand of genomic RNA tightly bound to N (nucleocapsid) protein and associated with the L (large) and P (phospoprotein) proteins which provides the RNA polymerase activity. F (fusion) protein trimers and G (attachment) protein tetramers are embedded within the lipid membrane. The genome of the Nipah virus consists of a non-segmented, single stranded negative sense RNA. In common with other members of the Paramyxovirinae subfamily, the number of nucleotides in the Henipavirus genome is a multiple of six, known as the 'rule of six'. The Nipah virus has been classified by the CDC as a Category C agent.

SUMMARY

Green manuring is the practice of growing lush plants on the site into which organic matter directly incorporate to the soil while it is still fresh. Green manures, often known as cover crops, are plants which are grown to improve the structure and nutrient content of the soil. They are a cheap alternative to artificial fertilizers and an eco-friendly input for organic farming and can be used to complement animal manures. Growing a green manure is not the same as simply growing a legume crop, such as beans, in a rotation. Green manures are usually dug into the soil when the plants are still young, before they produce any crop and often before they flower. They are grown for their green leafy material which is high in nutrients and protects the soil. It is basically a holistic management system, which promotes and improves the health of the agro-ecosystem related to biodiversity, nutrient biocycles, soil microbial and biochemical activities.

SUMMARY

Seed quality comprises the sum of all properties or characteristics, which determine the potential level of the seed or seed lot performance and crop establishment. Once the seed is sown many factors (biotic, abiotic etc.,) influence its survival and potential. Seed priming is one of the short–term and most programmatic approaches followed to improve the quality of seed so as to exhibit maximum possible potential even under adverse conditions. Seed priming is a method that well fit in to the one or more principles of sustainability, as it is practiced as a low-cost, low-risk interventions that increase and stabilize yields to have a large and direct impact on the livelihoods of farmers. Various priming methods viz., hydro priming, halo priming, matrix priming, bio priming are in practice for advancement in seed germination, better crop growth and yield. The adoption of seed priming as a successful technology is widely practiced across the Globe for various benefits at farm level. On-farm seed programme is one such   successful programmes adopted under UK aid across 11 countries towards sustainable agriculture campaign.

In 1886, Escherich observed Campylobacter like organisms in stool samples of children with diarrhoea. In 1913, McFaydean and Stockman first confirmed them as Campylobacter in foetal tissues of aborted sheep. Confirmatory tests were also carried out by Smith in 1918 when similar organisms were isolated from aborted bovine foetuses. The organism was then known as Vibrio foetus. In 1963, due to certain differentiating characteristics, the organisms were separated from Vibrionaceae family and the new genus Campylobacter (means ‘curved rod’) under Campylobacteriaceae family was proposed. 

Properties of genus

1.   Morphology :  Campylobacter is gram negative, comma shaped rods specially in infected tissues and young cultures. The size is 1.5-4 µm by 0.5 µm. When two bacterial cells are found together in a microscopic field, it looks like ‘S’ or ‘wing of gull’ (‘flying seagull’). However in older cultures, the chains of organism appear as long spirals. They are motile by single unipolar/ bipolar unsheathed flagella. Motility is darting or corkscrew type, best observed by dark field microscopy. They are non-sporing. Some species contains S-layer (surface layer), a paracrystalline protein structure composed of S-layer proteins (SLPs). It is external to the outer membrane. It helps the bacteria in immune evasion.

Clinical conditions similar to Brucellosis have been described since the time of Hippocrates (450 BC). J. A. Marston first described brucellosis as gastric remittent fever in 1861 at Malta (Marston, 1861). Sir David Bruce in 1886 first isolated little coccobacillus from an infected soldier’s spleen. However he isolated the bacteria in a pure culture in 1887 and named Micrococcus melitensis (Bruce, 1889). Later the genus was renamed as Brucella in his honour. Similarly, Bang and Stribolg first isolated Brucella abortus from abortion material of a cow (Bang, 1897). Traum in 1914 isolated the Bacillus abortus suis. Presently we know it as Brucella suis. In 1953, Brucella ovis was first isolated in New Zealand (Budlle and Boyes, 1953) from the aborted material of sheep. Carmichael and Bruner in 1968 first isolated B. canis from the aborted placenta of a dog.

            In India first report of ‘Contagious abortion’ by Brucella was found from annual report of Imperial Veterinary Research Institute (presently Indian Veterinary Research Institute), Mukteswar, Uttarakhand (Anonymous, 1918). Seroprevalence of Brucellosis is reported from various states of India afterward (Polding, 1942; Sethi et al., 1971 etc.).

Pasteurella and Mannheimia species are gram negative small coccobacilli under family Pasteurellaceae. Trevisan (1887) coined the generic name Pasteurella for the first time and it was accepted worldwide. Lignieres (1900) proposed the specific name for each organism according to the species of animal host: Pasteurella aviseptica for fowls; P. suiseptica for pigs; P. boviseptica for bovines; P. oviseptica for ovines and P. leptiseptica for rabbits. Finally, Rosenbuch and Merchant (1939) proposed a single species Pasteurella multocida and it is in use till date. 

      Mannheimia haemolytica was earlier known as Pasteurella haemolytica, but because of variations in cultural, pathological and 16S rRNA sequence, it is placed in separate genus.

Properties of genus

Morphology : P. multocida is a non motile, non spore-forming short rod or coccobacillus, 0.2-0.4 by 0.6-2.5 µm in size. Repeated laboratory subcultures or cultures grown under unfavourable conditions tend to be pleomorphic and longer rods or filamentous forms appear. In tissues, exudates and recently isolated cultures, the organism shows the typical coccobacillary forms. It is a gram-negative organism and, in fresh cultures and animal tissues, gives typical bipolar staining (Fig.1), particularly with Leishman or methylene blue stain.

Pfeiffer first isolated and described Haemophilus influenzae as a cause of human influenza (1892). So it is also known as ‘Pfeiffer’s bacillus’. Later other workers isolated and described different species of the genus Haemophilus from animals and birds. In 1903, Friedberger, a research assistant of Pfeiffer, isolated similar kind of organism from prepuce of the dogs. In 1922, Rivers described it as Haemophilus canis. In 1925, Mitchell isolated Haemophilus ovis from the respiratory tract of sheep. In 1931, Lewis and Shope first isolated and illustrated Haemophilus suis from the infected pigs. Glasser found an association between fibrinous serositis, polyarthritis in pigs (Glasser’s disease) and a small gram negative rod as early as 1910, latter became known as Haemophilus parasuis. It was first isolated by Hjarre and Wramby in 1943.  The first recorded isolation of a hemophilic organism from the birds was in 1931 by De Blieck and he called them as Bacillus haemoglobinophilus coryzae gallinarum. He isolated them from the chickens suffering a disease, now known as ‘infectious coryza’.

Listeria

Murray et al. (1926) first described about Listeria which was followed by Pirie et al. (1927). In India Listeriosis was first reported by Mahajan (1936) in sheep from Andhrapradesh. He recognized it as ‘circling disease’. Latter a number of reports are available from various parts of India.

The name Mycoplasma is originated from the Greek word mykes (fungus) and plasma (formed). It was first used by Albert Bernhard Frank, a German Biologist in 1889. He thought it was a fungus. An older name for Mycoplasma was Pleuropneumonia-Like Organisms (PPLO), referring to organisms similar to the causative agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP). It was later found that the fungus-like growth pattern of M. mycoides is unique to that species. It was first isolated in 1898 by Edmond Nocard and E. Roux from bovine lungs. Whereas, Mycoplasma pneumoniae was considered as a virus previously. Eaton and his co-workers cultured the causative agent of human primary atypical pneumonia (PAP) or "walking pneumonia." It was known as "Eaton's agent." In the early 1960s, Leonard Hayflick, in Philadelphia, was first to isolate and cultivate the causative agent of primary atypical pneumonia and identified the agent as a Mycoplasma and named it Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

INTRODUCTION

‘Wilting’ is a broad terminology used by Plant Protection Scientists.  Any disturbance or damage to the normal physiology of the plant leads to ‘wilting’ of plants.  Wilting in cotton is attributed to many factors and it is necessary to single out the actual cause for wilting before suggesting any remedial measure (Kannan, 1991).
Wilting in cotton could be due to any one or more factors as indicated below:

Introduction

India is the largest producer of pulses in the world, both in quantity and variety. But, presently, India is one of the largest importer of pulses. India imported pulse grains upto a tune of approximately 4000 crore rupees during 2006-07. It accounts for about 20 per cent of the total import bill during 2006-07. This is because of the green revolution (quantum jump in cereal production) accompanied with changes in the infrastructures and incentives including input supplies and price support systems in favour of major cereals. It altered the traditional cropping pattern against pulses with decades of emphasis on research as well as production in superior cereals coupled with a near total neglect of the rainfed areas, pulses were driven out of not only the irrigated areas, but also the rainfed farming and were relegated to the marginal lands. Further more, the weak infrastructural support for input supply, credit and marketing in the rainfed areas, the traditional home of pulses, also adversely affected the prospects for pulses. A vicious circle of low input use and low output thus got built in. Lack of processing and marketing facilities in pulses also contributed its share to the woes of pulse growers. The increasing shortage of pulses, resulted in the need for more and more import which, in turn has dampened the speed of rejuvenation of pulses sub-sector of agriculture sector.

The net per capita availability of pulses has fallen from 60.7 (1950-51) to 33.4 g (1991-92). On the contrary, the daily per capita availability of cereals has registered an increase from 334.2 (1950-51) to 443 g (1991-92). It leads to increase in the pulses/cereal ratio from 0.18 to 0.08 g i.e., by 55 per cent. This is despite the increases of 24.36 per cent in area; 61.71 per cent in production and 29.93 per cent in production. It is significant to note that almost all these increases had taken place during 1950-51 to 1960-61. The area, production and yield of pulses have either stagnated or declined since then. This stagnation of pulse production and productivity should be viewed seriously not only from the point of security and quality of food for our people, especially the poor and the rural population, but also from the soaring import bill, imbalance and distribution in the cropping pattern and resource allocation among various sub-sectors of agriculture.

MUTATION BREEDING

Mutation refers to sudden heritable change in phenotype of an organism or permanent change in the number, kind and sequence of nucleotides in genetic material, while individuals showing these changes are known as mutants. Mutation was first discovered by Wright in 1791 in male lamb which had short legs. Hugo de vries coined the term mutation. In crop improvement the breeders are always look for wide range of variability and stabilization of desirable traits. Mutation breeding is very useful in inducing new variability, which is an essential requirement of any plant breeding programme. The modern day cultivars are the resultants of various breeding techniques like selection, hybridization, tissue culture and mutagenesis including some biotechnological tools. Novelty in commercial traits like colour, size, shape, length, post harvest life of flowers etc. are always valued and preferred by consumers. Mutation breeding by exposing planting material with irradiation has play vital role in inducing novelty in a number of flower crops.

TYPES OF MUTATION

Based on occurrence

(1)Spontaneous mutation: Occur spontaneously in nature and not present in sufficiently high frequency and spectrum.

(2)Induced mutation: Artificially produced by the treatment of various mutagenic agents and present in sufficiently high frequency and spectrum

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are legal rights, which result from intellectual activity in industrial, scientific, literary and artistic fields. These rights safeguard creators and other producers of intellectual goods and services by granting them certain time-limited rights to control their use. Protected IP rights like other property can be a matter of trade, which can be owned, sold or bought. These are intangible and non exhausted consumption. The term “intellectual property” denotes the specific legal rights which authors, inventors and other IP holders may hold and exercise and not the intellectual work itself (Chadha, 2013). Intellectual property rights are essentially territorial in nature so, where registration is necessary, for patents, registered designs and trademarks, these will not exist in other countries unless registration has been sought and obtained there.

IP protection is crucial for a sustainable contribution of plant breeding and seed supply. Breeding new varieties of plants, which are developed after contributing number of years to the selective inheritance of traits which provide improved yields, higher quality and better resistance to such plant varieties requires a substantial investment in terms of skill, labour, material and economic resources. However, a new variety once released could in many cases be readily reproduced by others so as to deprive its breeder of the opportunity to benefit adequately from the investment made. Thus, an effective system of plant variety protection (PVP) is a key enabler for investment in breeding and the development of new varieties of plants or improving existing plant varieties, encourage importation of foreign varieties, promote exportation of plant varieties provide access to information of the created products and the methodology of creation for the enhancement of social welfare and generally benefit the market place. An international system of IPR protection for plant varieties expands these benefits by facilitating access to new varieties created in other states (Gautam et al., 2012).

Intellectual property is usually divided into two branches: (i) industrial property and(ii) copyright and the rights which neighbour upon copyright. The principal categories of industrial property are: patents, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs and trade secrets. Industrial property according to the 1883 Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property is to be understood in the broadest sense and to apply not only to industry and commerce proper but also to agricultural and extractive industries and to all manufactured or natural products including wines, grain, tobacco, leaf, fruit, cattle, minerals, mineral waters, beer, flowers and flour.

China aster (Callistephus chinensis L. Nees) belongs to family Asteraceae. It is a half hardy and branching annual. Its generic name Callistephus is derived from two Greek words “kalistos” meaning beautiful and “stephos” meaning a crown alluding the large colourful flower heads. Plant is erect having hispid-hairy branches (Bailey, 1963). It is propagated through seed. It is cultivated as cut flower both in the field and under protected condition in temperate countries (Post, 1956 and Warren Auman, 1980). Whereas, in India it is widely grown in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharastra for cut as well as loose flower production (Janakiram et al., 2001).

ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

China aster is originated from China. Several literatures also stated that China aster is native to China and Japan (Anon., 1950, Bailey, 1963 and Cockshull, 1985). The evolution of China aster has remarkable variations. The present day aster has been developed from single form of wild species, C. chinensis, a plant native to China. The plant was introduced in Europe in 1731 by Jesuit Missionary R.P. d Incarville.

The original plant had single flowers with two or four rows of blue, violet or white ray florets. The first change in the flower type had been the prolongation or development of central florets which lead to quilled flowers. Much original work to improve the plant was done by French. Later the British followed suit with breeding programmes. Most of the recent improvements are the work of American breeders. French florists contributed much in development of double forms. German scientists also evolved many doubled cultivars. These asters were known as German asters because the first great advances in the evolution of the plant were made in Germany and the seeds then used came largely from that country. The comet types introduced in 1886 or 1887 subsequently replaced the quilled types. With the introduction of new branching types by James Vick in 1893, the USA became the main centre of development of this plant as well as for the production of seeds. Since its introduction into Europe, it is grown in almost all the countries of the globe as a garden annual. A good amount of work on China aster on improvement and growing practices has been done in India (Singh, 2006).

Freesia is ornamental flowering plant belongs to family Iridaceae subfamily Ixioideae. Freesia is named after a physician and botanist from Germany named “Friedrich H.T. Freese” (1795–1876). Dr. Christian P. Ecklon, a collector of plants from South Africa, named the flower after his friend and student. Modern freesias are known as Freesia x hybrida and cultivated for cut flowers. Freesia is grown for two purposes i.e. cut flower and pot plant.

It is excellent cut flowers because of its appealing shapes and found suitable for various types of arrangements and bouquets. Wide range of colour increases its beauty. Hence, its flower demand increased dramatically in recent year in global market. Forced freesias are grown as pot plant. Colours in freesias consist of pink, red, orange, yellow, blue, lavender, cream and white. Some flowers are multicoloured and possess several variations of colour within the same bud. Because of their delectable fragrance, Freesias have been drafted as a vital ingredient in many fragrance oils. Freesia fragrance oils are utilized for many oil burners and vaporizers. It is used as an essential fragrance in potpourris. Freesia essence oil is high grade essence oil. This is because it is undiluted, alcohol free, and long lasting. The oil is used for aromatherapy to scent candles, soaps, massage oils, bath oils and perfumes.

ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Freesias are South African in origin. Most species were found in the Cape Province area in southern Africa and two others were found just north of the equator in a tropical climate and even in Sudan. Freesia x hybrida is the name of modern Freesia.

In 1866 Freesia was described as a distinct genus. Freesia alba was first described in 1878 by G.L. Meyer, and became well known in Europe, as F. refracta var. alba. Gumbleton recognized Freesia alba as a distinct species in 1896, but Freesia alba first appeared in the English nursery trade in 1878 and quickly spread to Europe and North America. It appears to have caused quite a sensation, and appeared in almost every horticultural publication of note in both Europe and America in the years following its introduction. Breeding began immediately after F. alba appeared on the market and continues to this day.

Most of the modern hybrids were first made in the 19^th century from a few species. The genus contains some superbly ornamental and adaptable plants. These range from the lovely, scented Freesia alba and the brilliant red Freesia grandiflora and Freesia laxa, to the bizarre green-flowered Freesia viridis.

Stock or Gillyflower (Matthiola spp.) belongs to family Brassicaceae. It is a hardy annual, biennial and perennial plant, flowering in terminal clusters. Matthiola incana is ornamentally important and grown for various purposes i.e. cut flower, fragrance, pot culture, etc. This species develops a woody base in areas where it grows as a biennial or short-lived perennial, hence the name of stock. Generic name “Matthiola” was given in the honour of “Dr. Pietro Andrea Gregoria Matthiole” (1501-1577), personal physician of Emperor Maximilian of Austria. “Incana” means “hairy or gray-white” in reference to plant leaves. It exists as both single and double forms and is valued for fragrant flowers that can be used as fresh or dried cut flower. They are excellent pot plants for the greenhouse in winter and spring and provide good cut flowers. Flowers are well arranged on a long column and colours are variable from white to rose, crimson, purple, yellow, mauve, pink, etc. The highly fragrant flowers are used as a garnish, especially with sweet deserts. Many old names were given to Matthiola incana including stocks, sea stocks, wallflowers and wall or gillyflowers.

ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Matthiola incana is native to the Iberian Peninsula, France, the Apennine Peninsula, the Balkan Peninsula, the British Isles, Turkey and Cyprus. According to Greuter et al. (1986), four species of Matthiola are known in Sicily and its surroundings: M. fruticulosa(L.) Maire, M. incana (L.) R. Br. & Ait., M. tricuspidata (L.) R. Br. and M. sinuata (L.)R. Br. Unlike its congeners, which only have a single taxon in this archipelago,M. incana consists of three infra-specific subdivisions (Lojacono-Pojero, 1888 and Greuter et al. 1986): ssp. incana (L.) R. Br., which is widespread in other insular and continental Mediterranean enclaves, and the narrow endemics ssp. pulchella (Conti) Greuter & Burdet (confined to the islet of Pantelleria) and ssp. rupestris (Raf.) Nyman, distributed in the surroundings of Palermo (Sicily) and in the Aeolids, the Egadian and Ustica, respectively (Raimondo et al. 1994).

Stock earlier known as Leucoium album or Viola alba was later renamed as Mattiola after Dr. Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist. This was being grown by the ancient Greeks and was linked for its frangrance. In the wild state, stocks are found in the Mediterranean, Egypt, South Europe and in South Africa and two species, Mattiola incana and M. sinuate are among the rare British natives. Ruth et al. (2009) also reported that Matthiola is widespread in the Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian regions. Both single and double forms were grown in Europe from 10^th century onwards and became popular garden flowers. Apart from its countries of origin, Matthiola incana can be found in Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Romania, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States.

Paphiopedilum is a genus of the orchid subfamily Cypripedioideae and family Orchidaceae. It is derived from Paphos and ancient Greek word “pedilon” means “slipper”. Paphiopedilums are often called “slipper orchids” because of their unique pouch. The pouch traps insects seeking nectar and to leave again they have to climb up past the staminode, behind which they collect or deposit pollinia. Paphiopedilum has a highly ornamental value being the treasure of Orchidaceae. They are easily grown as houseplants and their care is very similar to African Violets.

ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

The genus name Paphiopedilum was established by Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer in 1886. Ironically, no paphiopedilum occurs on Cyprus- at least not as the genus is understood today. But it was long mixed up with its holarctic relative Cypripedium, which indeed grows in the Mediterranean region. Paphiopedilum was finally decided to be a valid taxon in 1959, but its use has become restricted to eastern Asian species. The genus is native to Indo-Malaysia (South China, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands) and India. Paphiopedilum armeniacum is found from China (west Yunnan province) to northern Myanmar. It occurs at 1,600 to 2,000 metres above sea level. It is found growing on limestone hills, in semi-shaded deciduous forest, usually on cliffs above rivers.

SPECIES

Over fifty species of Paphiopedilum have been discovered in the far east from the higher, cooler elevations of the Himalayas, across to China and Southeast Asia and down to the warmer, sea-level regions of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines (Hawkes, 1965). Most species, like Paphiopedilum callosum are terrestrial in nature growing under the shaded and moist conditions of the forest floor (Fitch, 1982). Some species, such as Paphiopedilum niveum are lithophytic found in colonies on the coastal rock formations of the Malaysian islands (Fitch, 1982a). While a few of the larger strap-leaf Paphiopedilum species exposed to the higher light conditions found in their loftier habitats. Paphiopedilum philippinense var. roebelenii and Paphiopedilum lowii provide a strong contrast to such as Paph. lowii, are usually epiphytic Paphiopedilum charlesworthii previously described and serve to illustrate the extent of variation in both plant and flower habit within this genus. Unlike the single-flowered spikes of Paphiopedilum charlesworthii, which are usually around 15 cm tall, those of Paph. philippinense var. roebelenii and Paph. lowii can bear up to a half-dozen flowers and can measure 60 cm or more in length. Paphiopedilums with this kind of flowering habit are referred to as multifloral paphiopedilums (Batchelor). The plants themselves can be quite large particularly in the case of Paphiopedilum lowii, where individual leaves are often well over 30 cm long, though narrow.

Wild relatives of cultivated plants constitute a part of crop genepool, which possess genes that have great potential for their utilization in crop improvement programmes. Wild genepools especially those occurring in biotically disturbed habitats are under threat of genetic erosion and require immediate collection to make use of their wider adaptability, tolerance/resistance to disease, insect-pests, yield, quality attributes and other biotic and abiotic traits. The wild relatives of crop plants occur in all the major phytogeographical regions of India as component of different vegetation types and exhibit variable life forms and habitat specificity. High priority demand is towards collection of those that are at the risk of erosion due to habitat disturbance by manmade/ natural causes and over-exploitation of species for commercial use.

The centres of endemism are also centres of genetic diversity and consequently centres of speciation. Unless suitable conservation methods are applied, important wild relatives of crop plants and rare endemic species in particular have poor chances of survival. Based on the efforts made in the past for collection of diversity in wild relatives of crop plants priorities have been recommended for their conservation on the basis of species status (endemic, rare/threatened/endangered, etc.) and those that have high demand in crop improvement programmes (Arora and Nayar, 1984; Nayar, 1996, 1997; Wiersema and Leon, 1999; Hanelt and Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, 2001).

All economically important species at the risk of genetic erosion require attention for collection and conservation. Highest priority may be assigned to those having highly specialized habitat requirement and those that are endemic/rare/endangered to Indian region. Species producing seeds in large quantity and having easy method of multiplication or conservation are at lower risk than those producing less seed and of the recalcitrant or orthodox types where the storage protocols have been least worked out. Species having short seed viability or low germinability need special investigation.

Importance

The dairy products, which have originated in India, are called indigenous dairy products. The products can be broadly classified in to khoa based and channa based. The importance of the dairy products were known to Indians since time immemorial or it could be roughly estimated to be around five thousand years ago and the development could be considered as an art.

All the states have some area under irrigation. Thus the term ‘irrigated ecosystem’is rather loosely defined, and the states having distinctly large net irrigated area may constitute this ecosystem. Two such areas can be easily carved out i.e., Indo-Gangetic Plain region representing five states namely Punjab, Haryana, U.P., Bihar and West Bengal, and coastal areas of two southern states i.e., A.P and Tamil Nadu. About 56% of the net irrigated area of the country exists in these states, and the cropping intensity is also much higher (144%) as against national average of 132%. With demographic viewpoint also, these areas are densely populated. Of late agriculture in this ecosystem has become unsustainable owing to over-exploitation of natural resources. Studies have conclusively established the superiority and worth of integrated nutrient management in restoration of soil health and sustenance of crop productivity and profits.

The basic concept underlying the principles of integrated nutrient management (INM) is the maintenance, and possibly improvement, of soil fertility for sustaining crop productivity on long-term basis. This may be achieved through combined use of all possible sources of nutrients and their scientific management for optimum growth, yield and quality of different crops and cropping systems. INM is not a new concept, but an age-old practice. Its importance was, however, not realized earlier due to low nutrient turn over in soil-plant system and almost all the nutrient needs were met through organic sources, which supplied secondary and micronutrients also besides major nutrients. INM has now assumed great significance mainly because of two reasons. First, the need for continued increase in agricultural production based on increase in per hectare yields requires growing application of nutrients, and the present level of fertiliser production in india is not enough to meet the total plant nutrient requirement. Second, the results of a large number of experiments on manures and fertilisers conducted in india and other countries reveal that neither the chemical fertilisers alone nor the organic sources exclusively can achieve the production sustainability under intensive cropping systems (Hegde and Dwivedi, 1993). Even the so called balanced use of chemical fertilisers would not be able to sustain high productivity due to emergence ofthe deficiencyofone ormore ofthe secondaryandmicronutrients (Swarup and Wanjari, 2000). The interactive advantages of combining organic and inorganic sources of nutrients in INM have proved superior to the use of its each component separately. The advantages of INM can be broadly enumerated as following:

Limited availability of additional land for crop production, along with declining yield growth for major food crops, have heightened concerns about agriculture’s ability to feed a world population expected to exceed 7.5 billion by the year 2020. Decreasing soil fertility has also raised concerns about the sustainability of agricultural production at current levels. Future strategies for increasing agricultural productivity will have to focus on using available nutrient resources more efficiently, effectively, and sustainably than in the past. Management of the nutrients needed for proper plant growth, together with effective crop, water, soil, and land management, will be critical for sustaining agriculture over the long term. Plants, like all other living things, need food for their growth and development. Growth is the function of various factors like light, carbon dioxide gas, water and mineral nutrients. Plants require 16 essential elements. Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are derived from the atmosphere and soil water. The remaining 13 essential elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, boron, molybdenum, and chlorine) are supplied either from soil minerals and soil organic matter or by organic or inorganic fertilizers. For plants to utilize these nutrients efficiently, light, heat, and water must be adequately supplied. Cultural practices and control of diseases and insects also play important roles in crop production. Each type of plant is unique and has an optimum nutrient range as well as a minimum requirement level. Below this minimum level, plants start to show nutrient deficiency symptoms. Excessive nutrient uptake can also cause poor growth because of toxicity. Therefore, the proper amount of application and the placement of nutrients are important.

Sustainable agriculture warrants a wise management of natural resources and inputs to satisfy human needs in the fast changing scenario while maintaining, if not improving, the quality of environment. Soil as a natural resource is facing more and more serious degradation threats under modern agriculture. Incidence and expansion of multi-nutrient deficiencies in Indian soils owing to inadequate and unbalanced nutrient input through fertilizers is considered one of the major reasons for decline in factor productivity of crops. The problem of soil fertility depletion is spectacular across the soil types and agro-climatic zones, but it is more acute in intensively cropped areas, where annual nutrient removal by the crops often far exceeds replenishments. Recent diagnostic surveys indicate that in several high productivity areas of irrigated ecosystems like, Trans-and Upper Gangetic Plain zones, farmers are resorting to even excessive use of fertilizers, especially N, to maintain the yields at levels attained previously with lower fertilizer application rates. With an unabated deterioration in soil health in general, and soil fertility in particular, and a mounting pressure on finite land resources due to increase in population, the interest in soil fertility and soil health has revived due to several reasons:

Stagnation in growth rates of production and productivity of staple foodgrains - threat to food security

Decline in factor productivity, thus increasing cost of production

Nutrient withdrawals in excess of replenishment

Low nutritional value of food and feed grown on nutrient-starved soils - threat to nutritional security

Poor quality of produce fetching low price - threat to economic security

Rice-wheat is a dominant cropping system in the Indo-Gangetic Plains covering approximately an area of 10.5 million ha. Modern agricultural production practices have emphasized the widespread use of fertilizers as a source of nutrients. The continuous use of high levels of chemical fertilizers over a prolonged period, decline in area under legumes and reduction in the use of organic manures has resulted in soil degradation and environmental pollution. It is estimated that the gap between nutrient removal by crops and addition through fertilizers in India will remain at level of 8-10 million tones per annum. Such negative nutrient balances are depleting the soils of their nutrient reserves resulting in acute deficiencies of nutrients. Integrated plant nutrient supply (IPNS) is an important component of sustainable agricultural intensification. The goal of integrated nutrient management (INM) is to integrate the use of all natural and man-made sources of plant nutrients, so as to increase crop productivity in an efficient and environmentally benign manner, without diminishing the capacity of the soil to be productive for present and future generations. The INM is made up of components which possess great diversity in terms of chemical and physical properties, nutrient release efficiencies, positional availability, crop specificity, and farmers’ acceptability. Since organic manures cannot meet the total nutrient needs of modern agriculture, integrated use of nutrients from fertilizers and organic resources seems to be a need of the time. For INM to make desirable progress and find wide acceptance, nutrient supply packages for important agroecological environments need to be developed. These should be technically sound, practically feasible, economically attractive and socially acceptable. Integrated plant nutrient systems can ensure long-term sustainability of agricultural growth through improvement in soil health and will significantly reduce the needs for chemical fertilizers. The complementary use of chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers may increase the efficiency of chemical fertilizers in order to maintain a high level of crop productivity. Because of low primary nutrient content and thus the need for large applications per unit area, farmers and policy makers are often reluctant to adopt and promote the use of organic fertilizers. The different components of INM possess great diversity in terms of chemical and physical properties and nutrient release patterns.

Biodiversity is the variety of life in different microbes, animals, plants and their genes present in the ecosystem. Soil provides a vital habitat and environment primarily for microflora such as bactria, actinomycetes, fungi as well as microfauna viz. protozoa and nematodes, mesofauna such as microarthopods, enchytraeids, macrofauna such as earthworms, beetles, termites and millipedes (Gaur 2006a).

Biodiversity and soil are interlinked which interact closely with wider biosphere. Conversely, biological activity is ofprime importance in influencing the physical and chemical conditions of soil (Bardgett 2005). The level of soil biological activity is, therefore, affected by soil type and also depends on the use of management practices which contribute to crop productivity.

Soil biodiversity and soil processes

A majority of soil organisms participate in various processes which are essential for the biosphere. The main ecological function is to decompose organic matter largely derived from the plant and animals residues Which consist of celluloses, hemicelluloses and lignin, and to supply plant nutrients to support growth. These organisms participate in various nutrient cycles and processes such as nitrogen mineralization, nitrification, nitrogen fixation, transformations ofphosphorus, potassium, sulphur, calcium, magnesium, iron and micronutrients (Pankhurst et al 1997). They participate in bioremediation of harmful compounds such as heavy metals and pesticide residues (Gaur 2006 b). They not only maintain physical and chemical conditions of soil, but also regulate emissions / assimilations of green house gases and suppress soil borne diseases and pests

Introduction

Seed spices include group of annuals whose dried fruit or seeds are used as spices. These are characterised by pungency, strong odour, sweet or bitter taste. Coriander, cumin, fennel and fenugreek occupy largest area among the seed spices. However, ajowan, dil, celery, anise, nigella and caraway having secondary place as far as area and production is concerned. Major area under seed spices is in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and other seed spices producing states are Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The seed spices account for about 36% and 17% of the total area and production of spices in country. The export of seed spices from India during 2008-09 was 4.71 thousand tonnes worth Rs. 54914.8 million rupees. The per cent export growth rate during 1995-96, 2000-01, 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2008-09 was 12.0, 11.0, 8.0, 36.0 and 19.0% in terms of value and 13.0, 3.0, 8, 13.0 and 6.0 in respect of quantity, respectively.

Integrated plant nutrient management includes use of organic manure/ compost, bio-fertilizer, chemical fertilizer, green manuring, residue management, legume based cropping system, use of nutrient-responsive varieties, proper method and time oforganic manure and fertilizer application, soil and water management to minimize the nutrient losses occurring through volatilization, denitrification, runoff and leaching. Application of plant nutrients in proper balance form is also a part of Integrated Plant Nutrient Management (IPNS) system. Supply of nutrients to seed spices in appropriate quantities and at the correct times is essential for economically and environmentally sustainable agriculture. Soil organic matter, crop residues and manures play a vital role in the supply of macro and micronutrients and the transformation between the various organic and inorganic forms often control availability, both for plant uptake and loss to the environment (Aishwath and Vashishtha, 2008; Lal, et al., 2009).
