The wellbeing of a person depends on his immune system. Any deficiency in any component of the immune system is called immunodeficiency and it may impair the normal functioning of his body and makes the person more susceptible to infections.

As long ago as 1881 Charles Darwin wrote: “It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organized creatures”.

The soil of the food bowl states of our country viz. Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh and plains of Uttarakhand have become deficient in organic matter, macro and micro nutrients and trace elements. Now soil has become non living due to death of earthworms and beneficial micro organism. Farmers are using mainly nitrogen and phosphorus in crop production. However 17 elements are essential for plants nutrition for growing of crops. To get maximum yield and output from the crop plants, a vicious cycle of using the maximum amount of chemical amendments is going on. In the chemical amendments, indiscriminate use of both fertilizers and pesticides are included. Due to this indiscriminate use of these fertilizers and pesticides, our environment is being polluted and living organisms on this planet are experiencing the deleterious effects of all this on their health. These chemicals also exert their influence on soil flora and fauna, therefore the balance of macro and micronutrients release in soil is being disturbed and as a consequence soil fertility and productivity is decreasing day by day. Therefore, for sustainable agriculture healthy farming is fast becoming an urgent necessity.

The problems being faced are the destruction of the soil health leading to reduction in production potential, failure of pest control strategies due to the development of pesticide resistance, biomagnification of pesticides such as reside problems in food and water. The food grain produced and assessed with attributes of fertilizers, the fertilizer efficiency seems to be decreasing. In 1970-71 it was 17.1%, declined in 1980-81 to 10.3% and in 1988-89 reached to 8.1%. Now a day, farmers are not properly using organic, green and compost manures in crop husbandry. Soil fertility and ground water level has been declining very fast by adopting intensive farming. If soil health of any country has been depleted, then the food grain production will also tend to decrease.

One of the characteristics of the immune system is to recognize and discriminate self from the non-self antigens. But, sometimes, there is a failure to discriminate between self and non-self antigens in the body and an autoimmune response occurs. Body starts producing antibodies against its own cells/antigens. The self antigens against which the immune system responds are called autoantigens and the antibodies produced against self antigens are called autoantibodies.

This comprehensive review highlights how nanotechnology enhances feed efficiency, improves growth and health monitoring, develops novel materials, and addresses environmental and sustainability challenges within the aquaculture industry.

1. Introduction to Nanotechnology in Aquaculture

1.1 Understanding Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology involves the manipulation and engineering of materials at the nanoscale, typically ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers. At this scale, materials exhibit unique physical, chemical, and biological properties that differ significantly from their bulk counterparts. These properties make nanomaterials highly versatile for applications across various industries, including agriculture and aquaculture.

Seed testing

No matter how good processed seed may look, the actual value is the number of seedlings it will produce. Testing of seeds is therefore imperative to determine and identify the changes that have occurred from the time of collection until the seeds are sold or sown at one time. The critical step in evaluating a seed lot is the drawing of representative sample. Place all the test samples in a bucket, mix them thoroughly and subdivide to obtain sample size. Improvements in seed processing can only be obtained with quality control. These evaluations should be made in the processing plant and at a seed testing laboratory. The National Tree Seed Laboratories offers a free service to evaluate processing machinery. You need only collect a small sample of seed after it has been processed by each machine and send it to the laboratory. Be sure all the seed comes from the same lot so all samples are related. Each machine must be adjusted for efficient operation, and proper adjustment requires monitoring of the operation.

Descriptive Statistics of Independent Variable With Respect to Minimum, Maximum, Range, Mean, Standard Deviation of Values, Variance, and Coefficient of Variance:

Results: The variable age (x1 ) having the range between 20 to 62. So, the mean of the age (x1 ) variable is 38.64. Similarly, the other variables education (x2 ), family size (x3 ), family income (x4 ), risk factor (x5 ), management factor (x6 ), natural calamities (x7 ), employment status (x8 ), expenditure (x9 ), push factor (x10 ), pull factors (x11 ) have the mean 5.220, 4.720, 1.270, 0.505, 4.790, 3.875, 4.809, 5.655, 2.226, 5.613 respectively. Here, we see that distribution of variables education (x2 ) and push factor (x10 ) among the respondents are moderately consistent and residual distribution of variables among the respondents are highly consistent.

People all around the world have been conducting genetic association studies for a long time. Still the literature to practically understand the statistical analysis of such data using software packages is scarce. Statistical analysis of molecular data is a vast topic. So we will be undertaking one of the important basic and preliminary topics “Statistical analysis of genetic association studies among unrelated individuals” in this chapter. Overall, we will be discussing population association studies in which qualitative and quantitative data on unrelated individuals for various economic traits is collected and these individuals are also typed at a number of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers. This excludes family-based association studies, admixture mapping or linkage studies. Various software packages used in this chapter to analyze molecular data of a population are given below in Table 1.

Vegetable occupy an important place in diversification of agriculture and have played a pivotal role in food and nutritional security of ever growing population of our country. The vegetable requirement of our country is estimated at 225 million tonnes by 2020 (Paroda, 2020) against only 134 million tonnes in 2009-10 (NHB, 2010). India is facing, today, with stagnation in crop productivity and slows down in agricultural growth. Declining soil health and fertility is considered as one of the factor for such a decline. The restoration of soil health and fertility is, therefore, a formidable challenge before us to ensure higher and sustainable productivity, profitability and national food and nutritional security.

An Overview of Parasitic Diseases in Asian Aquaculture

Parasitic induced diseases bring about significant economic losses in fish culture system. Estimated loss due to mortality and morbidity of fish due to parasitic infection is much more than that from microbial diseases. Protozoan ciliates (Ichthyopthirius, Trichodina) and flagellates (Ichthybodo, cryptobia) are some of the common ectoparasites of fish. Certain ectocommensal ciliates (Epistylis, Vorticella and Zoothamnium) attach to the external surface of fish leading to fouling. These protozoan ectoparasites are often associated with mortalities of younger stages of cultured fish. The situation becomes worst in water with low oxygen and high organic matter. Most extoparasitic protozoans have simple and short life cycle and reproduce by binary fission. Most protozoan ectoparasites are readily detected in direct microscopic examination of skin and gill scrapings. Histopathological changes in the integument following ectoparasitic protozoan infection are outcome of two counteracting cellular processes – hyperplasia of the epithelial cells, including mucus cells and chloride cells, versus a progressive cellular destruction. Cellular necrosis primarily occurs due to the feeding and attachment activity of the parasites. Generally, immersion therapy using suitable chemicals can control ectoparasitic protozoan infections

Disease caused by endoparasitic sporozoans are a serious threat to fish farms. These sporozoan spores present in the pond soil are normally ingested by the fish. The infective element of the spore (sporoplasm) is released in the gut. The sporoplasm reaches the target tissue using the vascular route. Once inside the target tissue, the vegetative trophozoites cause massive destruction of the target tissue and produce large spore containing cysts. There are two types of sporozoan infecting fish and shell fish namely myxosporidian and microsporidian. Myxosporidian occur in fish either as histozoic (intercellular tissue parasites) or as coelozoic (inside the lumen of various ducts and tubules) parasites. Microsporidians are intracellular obligatory parasites and lead to massive hypertrophy of infected cells (xenomas). There is no effective treatment for sporozoans. However, treating pond soil with chemicals and lime is the best option.

INTRODUCTION
Over the past two decades climate change has evolved from a debate about whether the planet is really warming to an increased focus on how to mitigate and adapt to its impacts. After an extensive review of the available literature on evidence of climate change, the Working Group I to the Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC, 2007 concluded that “the warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average temperature”. “The scientific evidence is now overwhelming; climate change presents very serious global risks, and it demands an urgent global response” (Stern 2007).

Abstract

Quality of water is affected by natural and man induced contamination to groundwater system. Area chosen for study has gained its own importance due to the location of two lignite mines and a Thermal power plant in operation. Extensive large scale pumping of water is done for lignite mining. The mine drainage and drainage from thermal power plant along with agricultural return flow from lignite charged waters increases the severity of problem. In order to achieve a panacea for the above-mentioned situation, the study has incorporated and integrated in all related factors to get a meaningful interpretation for groundwater quality and quantity management in and around Neyveli area. The frequent failure of monsoon has added to the existing problem of over exploitation. To attain a panacea for water chemistry groundwater samples were collected for four different seasons. Higher EC and TDS values are observed in Southeast and Southwest part of the study area. In Southwest monsoon and Summer seasons HCO₃Cl dominates the anions, with few representations for SO₄. In Northeast monsoon and Post monsoon season Na + K – Ca + Mg is the dominant. Thermodynamic, studies reveal that groundwater of the region are stable with Kaolinite stability field in all the silicate systems. Bicarbonates derived from silicate mineral weathering are noted in the NW, Northern and in the mining region. These regions are located in the NW and NE part of the study area. Comparison of water quality to standards shows that the water can be used for drinking and for irrigation purposes except in few locations.

Introduction

The increasing concern about the long-term productivity of agro ecosystems has emphasized the need to develop a management strategy that maintains and protects the soil resources. This is directly related to the maintenance of the level of soil organic matter and nitrogen status, which are the critical components of soil productivity. These parameters can change over time due to crop management practices such as cultivation, crop rotation, residue management or fertilization which, in turn, can influence the long-term sustainability of ecosystem. Application of chemical fertilizer is one of the most expensive inputs in agriculture. About 65% of the applied nitrogenous fertilizer is lost from the plant–soil system through gaseous emissions, runoff, erosion and leaching which causes greenhouse effects and nitrate pollution of surface and ground water (Rejesus and Hornbaker 1999). Similarly, P applied in soil is rapidly fixed and results in low P availability for plant production. In this context, the deployment of microbial biofertilizers promise increasing soil nutrient availability in integrated nutrient management system.

Introduction

Soil supports richest number and kinds of microorganisms interacting with each other and thus by modification or alteration in soil conditions greatly influence the microbial community and their activity in soil ecosystem. Soil physico-chemical and the biological factors interact to provide rapidly changing ecological niches and microbial components fluctuate in response to change in soil conditions. There are large evidences that agricultural practices often favour antagonistic microorganisms (Cook and Baker,1983; Yarham,1979) and therefore, biological control of plant pathogens could be possible through manipulation of soil condition. Soil organic matter also has a profound influence on microorganisms in soil, particularly those, including some pathogens, saprophytic and obligate plant parasites. Soil organic matter is distributed at discrete sites within the soil and determines to a great extent which parts of pore space are occupied.

DSM-5 and Diagnosis of Mental Health Issues
Mental health is a fundamental aspect of overall wellbeing and the accurate diagnosis of mental health issues is crucial for providing appropriate and effective treatment. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) is the latest reference guide used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental health conditions (Kapadia et al., 2020). The current edition, DSM- 5, builds on the goal of its predecessors of providing guidelines for diagnoses that can inform treatment and management decisions. The DSM-5 represents a significant advancement in the field of psychiatry, as it incorporates a cross-cultural assessment of mental health issues and an updated classification system. (Petito et al., 2020) This detailed diagnostic criteria helps clinicians accurately identify and differentiate mental health conditions, enabling them to develop tailored treatment plans.

The growing adoption of Generative AI in academic institutions has moved the technology from experimental applications toward practical implementation across teaching, learning, research, student support, and university operations. This chapter examines real-world applications and institutional case studies that demonstrate how GenAI can be incorporated into higher education and other academic environments. Key applications include AI tutoring and learning support, curriculum and course development, assessment and feedback, research assistance, student-success services, and institutional operations. AI writing coaches can provide individualized guidance, while dialogic mathematics and coding assistants can support problem-solving without simply providing answers. Educators can use GenAI to develop learning objectives, case studies, examples, question banks, rubrics, multimedia scripts, synthetic datasets, and practice environments. The chapter also considers institutional experiences with AI policies, academic integrity, accessibility, privacy, and professional development. Successful implementations generally combine technological capabilities with human review, clear institutional guidelines, and AI literacy. ABSTRACT

Eastern part of the Uttar Pradesh falls in mid-Gangetic plain commonly called as ‘Purvanchal’. It is divided into three ecozones : i) North eastern tarai, ii) Eastern Plains, and iii) Vindhyan. Most of the farmers of the region have subsistence agriculture with small land holding. Although total forest area is 10.69 per cent of the geographical area, the actual well stocked forests (medium and good forests) in the region are confined to 3.51%. Vindhyan zone indicates higher dependence for fire wood (35% of the total need) on natural forests. Cow dung is major source used as fuel in Eastern plains (65% of the fuel requirement). The cropping systems are different in rainfed and irrigated lands. Surveys of different parts of the eastern U. P. indicate that people have a progressive attitude towards agroforestry. However, due to land hunger most of the farmers develop homesteads. Agrihorticulture system is most popular system adopted by large and medium farmers in the region. Agrisilvihorticulture system is adopted by the farmers of Eastern plains and North eastern tarai zones. Agrisilviculture, Silvihorticulture, Agrisilvihorticulture and sivipastoral systems researched by us, are recommended for adoption by the farmers.

Nanotechnology epitomizes one of the most dynamic and transformative fields in modern science and technology. This multidisciplinary domain bridges chemistry, physics, biology, along with engineering, enabling the creation of materials and devices with extraordinary properties and applications. The book chapter reflects the research and patenting trends in nanotechnology. USA leading the global share for most patents granted followed by South Korea, Japan, China and Germany for the top five spots contributing more than 76% of all the granted patents by EPO & USPTO related to nanotechnology. Nanotechnological products in relation to sub-industrial areas of medicine, food, agriculture, cosmetics, environment, and renewable energies are also highlighted in chapter. 

6.1 Alternative Protein Sources

Traditional aquaculture feeds rely heavily on fishmeal and fish oil, derived from wild-caught fish, which poses ecological and economic challenges. The overreliance on these marine resources can lead to overfishing, increased production costs, and environmental degradation. To address these challenges, the aquaculture industry is increasingly exploring alternative protein sources that are sustainable, cost-effective, and nutritionally adequate. This essay discusses various alternative protein sources, their benefits, and challenges in the context of sustainable aquaculture feed and nutrition.

Plant-Based Protein Sources

Plant-based proteins are among the most promising alternatives to fishmeal in aquaculture diets. These proteins are derived from crops such as soybeans, peas, and canola. They offer several advantages, including wide availability, cost-effectiveness, and relatively low environmental impact.

The demand for alternative energy sources is on the rise as a result of global apprehensions regarding the swift exhaustion of fossil fuels, escalating energy usage, and significant environmental challenges (Lijó et al. 2019). Microalgae are regarded as highly favorable raw materials for upcoming energy sources, thanks to their various advantages, including rapid growth rates, elevated lipid contents and resistance to a variation of pH, temperature, light intensity, and salinity (Goswami et al. 2022; Zhang et al. 2022; Wang et al. 2019; Das et al. 2011). As per a recent evaluation of the lipid production efficiency of microalgae biomass, numerous nations could derive their transport fuel (~30%) from microalgae biomass grown on non-agricultural areas (Moody et al. 2014). Apart from their higher lipid production efficiency in contrast to earthly raw materials, microalgae consist of lipids, polysaccharides, pigments, proteins, and nucleic acids, making them versatile raw materials for a range of finalized outcomes, including nutrients, pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and bioplastics (Tang et al. 2020; Kim et al. 2016; Moody et al. 2014; Sharma et al. 2011). Additionally, microalgae are appealing for their efficient sequestration of CO2 during photosynthetic growth (Vargas-Estrada et al. 2020). In contrast to landbased oilseeds, microalgae can be cultivated in freshwater and contaminated or saline locations, eliminating the requirement for substantial nitrogen fertilizer application (Sharma et al. 2022; Rashid et al. 2019; Lam and Lee 2012). The positive attributes of microalgae as raw materials have prompted substantial research endeavours aimed at the commercialization of microalgal biofuels. Regrettably, microalgal biorefineries continue to encounter various technological and economic challenges (Khoo et al. 2020). In essence, nanotechnology involves the invention, creation, and utilization of resources at the nanoscale. Precisely, nanomaterials engineering explores the synthesis and designing of artificial or adorned nanoparticles to drive technological progress and enable applications that would otherwise be impractical. Nanomaterials possess surface areas hundreds of times greater than their weights, significantly enhancing their physico-chemical attributes (Husen and Siddiqi 2014; López-Serrano et al. 2014). Currently, nanotechnology-driven developments, with diverse potential features, have emerged as a burgeoning trend in various industries, including drug delivery, food industry, catalysis, coatings, agriculture, bioremediation, cosmetics, and materials science (Malik et al. 2023). Nanoparticle engineering offers practical and potential solutions to address the problems that arise at different phases of the microalgal biorefinery procedure. For instance, diverse nanomaterials have been proposed as ways to enhance transformation efficacy and the quality of green diesel. The distinctive capabilities of nanoscience and nanomaterial engineering exert a substantial impact on the commercial feasibility of microalgae derived products, including bioactive compounds, oils, lipids, and biofuels (Kumar et al. 2020; Milano et al. 2016). Nanoparticles have the capacity to boost intracellular fatty acid synthesis and complete microalgal biomass, leading to substantial reductions in production expenses. The presence of nanomaterials enhances the efficiency and speed of the microalgae harvesting, and the recoverability and reusability of these materials contribute to improved production efficiency.
