Moisture deficit causing shortfalls in crop production is the characteristic feature of dryland agriculture. Other adverse factors viz., decline in soil fertility together with play of biotic stresses add to the complexities of dryland crop production. Added to the proven agronomic management to combat the problem of drought in dryland agriculture, there is the need to tailoring of suitable crop varieties which can yield reasonably well under conditions of moisture deficit (Varshney et al., 2021). In this context, the appropriate developmental rhythm along with the combination of the constellation of characters of the crop plant matching with the rainfall and the soil moisture availability patterns of the zone are the important considerations together with stability of yield (Hanson and Nelsen, 1980). This task being a complex one, the problem should be approached through multidisciplinary strategy that should buffer the genetic and breeding efforts.

Introduction

Packaging of food material is an essential component of food industry since packaging provides protection, physical tampering resistance and unique appearance to the food products which attracts the customers (Robertson, 2006). The handling of food products would be inefficient and costly if they are not packed properly (Robertson, 2006). The style and design of packaging influence their sale as well as demand. The main aim of packaging is to corroborate the safety and quality of food by preventing microbial contamination (Lee K.M, 2010). Plastics, papers, glass and metals are the common materials used for packaging of food products (Arvanitoyannis and Bosnea, 2004). Among these plastics are most commonly used packaging material because of their low cost, light weight, design freedom and high durability (British Plastic Federation). Various additives are added to the plastics to achieve desired physical and chemical properties. These additives are stabilizers, plasticisers, lubricants and f lame retardants. These additives have potential to transfer from the packaging materials to the food stuffs(K Bunia et al., 2013).

The efficient food packaging solutions are the need of the hour for the Earth. The food losses including the production, post harvest, processing stages of the supply chain and food wastage includes loss of edible food occurring at the f inal stages of food chain that is during retail supply or ultimate consumption. The food born illnesses cannot be ignored which are a consequence of the contamination of food by bacteria, viruses, parasites, new chemical entities or toxicants. We need to optimise the food supply chain, increase food shelf life and consciousness amidst food producers to food consumers. The active and intelligent packaging may help the globe through sufficient food for the increasing population. Scavengers/ absorbers are important solutions which may absorb substances from the packaging inner atmosphere (ethylene absorbers, oxygen scavengers; emitters and antioxidants).

The plant can absorb more than sixty elements as revealed from the plant tissue analysis, still a few elements is considered essential for the growth and nutrition of the plants. The deficiency of any one of the essential elements can stop completing the life cycle of the plants which is reflected on the yield of the crop. The growth of the plant which is expressed in terms of dry weight, length ,diameter etc. are interlinked with the plant available nutrients of soils.

3.1 Essential Nutrients

The essential elements are those elements which are required for growth and nutrition of the plants. There are 17 elements known to be essential nutrients for plants. The essential elements are classified as micro and macronutrients depending upon the requirement of the crop. Among the naturally occurring elements, eighteen elements are considered essential to plants. These are: C, H, O, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Mo, Cl, Ni, Co. The elements which are found in different sources are required to be in available forms (Table 3.1) for growth and nutrition of the plants.

Preventive maintenance practices also contribute to the overall efficiency of the mill by minimizing downtime and optimizing energy consumption. Furthermore, the quality of the final product is closely tied to the condition of the milling machines. Proper maintenance ensures the production of high-quality dal and oil that meet industry standards and consumer expectations. The effective management of both operational processes and maintenance procedures is essential for the profitability and sustainability of Dal and Oil Mills. Skilled personnel, adherence to safety guidelines, and a proactive approach to troubleshooting and repairing equipment are key to achieving consistent output and high product quality. This chapter will delve into the specifics of the operation and maintenance practices required to run Dal Mills and Oil Mills efficiently, providing insights into best practices, challenges, and solutions that contribute to the overall success of these milling operations.

Introduction

Species of Polygonatum, traditional known for their therapeutic properties for treating different ailments,are fairly well represented in temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia, America and Europe and find use. In India, P. cirrhifolium, and P. verticillatum are the two important constituting species of Ashtavarga, but have attained a threatened status due to overexploitation. Of the 60 odd known species of the genus, less than 10 have been explored phyto-chemically. Their status varies species wise, at regional and global level.

In simple terms, business refers to buying and selling of products. Business would define itself as an organized effort through companies aimed at supplying consumers with products and services in a return for monetary compensation. However, this simplistic definition is insufficient to assess the impact of the environment on modern international business operations. For easy understanding, modern business can be explained as a complex field of industry and commerce involving activities associated with both production and distribution. These activities cater to the wants and desires of society at one extreme and provide profit for business firms at the other.

Indian leaders, particularly the first Prime Minister Dr. Jawaharlal Nehru, who had conceived the theory of five year plans, had regarded high economic growth and higher income among poor population as the foremost objectives before the newly independent nation. To achieve these objectives, government was made to play a very important role, and since 1951, a series of five year plans have been the driving forces behind the economic prosperity of the country. Despite of experiencing growth in 1950s, it was still lower than that of many Asian countries. Between 1951-79, the Indian economy had grown at an average rate of 3.1 percent a year at constant prices. Growth in the industrial sector had been about 4.5 percent a year, while for the agriculture sector, growth was 3.0 percent over that period. Many of the political leaders associated with the movement were also in support of a socialistic development pattern. They favored state interference in the economy. They encouraged state ownership of core industries.

Embryologically, the circulatory system is the first organ system to develop in the living animals. The form and function of this system vary considerably among the animals and are shaped by a variety of environmental factors i.e. phenotypic plasticity. Oxygen (O₂) acquisition and carbon dioxide (CO2) elimination occur simultaneously at the gill site of fish and shrimp. The gases are transported around the body by the circulation of the blood.

3.1. Circulatory System of Fishes

In fishes, heart is simply a muscular enlargement and modification of a part of the main blood vessels, lying between the hepatic capillaries and the gills. Fishes have a closed circulatory system with a heart that pumps blood in a single loop throughout the body. From the heart, blood goes to the gill capillary bed. Then via the systemic capillaries it returns back to the heart. Usually the gills account for approximately 30% of the total resistance to blood flow, the rest being in the visceral and somatic vasculature. Tuna requires more O₂ and the gill area is large with gill resistance up to 57%.

Various activities of the body in different external environmental conditions are co-ordinated by the appropriate message from the neurons due to the stimuli from the environment. These messages pass in the form of impulses through the co-ordinated links between a number of neurons or nerve cells. The constant passage of messages require a very little energy but high level of O₂ .There is interaction between the nervous and endocrine system with the areas of interchange among the two systems. Some neurons show the action of both the systems and thus termed as neurosecretory or neuro-endocrine. Fishes have a well-developed nervous system. Broadly the nervous system can be divided into central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).The brain and spinal cord are the parts of the CNS. The motor and sensory nerves link the receptor and effector organs. All nerve tissues other than brain and spinal cord are grouped under PNS. Peripheral nervous system consists of nerves, ganglia and receptors. The nerves carry sensory information from special receptor organs like eyes, internal ear etc. to the integrating centers of the brain and spinal cord. The PNS also carries information via different nerve cells from the integrating centers of the brain and spinal cord. This coded information is carried to the various organs and body systems, such as the skeletal muscle system for appropriate action in response to the original external and internal stimulus. The PNS can be divided into somatic and visceral. The term visceral is sometimes used in referring to the autonomic or involuntary nervous system (ANS), controlling visceral functions. The ANS helps to co-ordinate the activities of many glands and organs, and it is closely connected to the integrating centers of the brain.

Abstract

High Tech interventions begin with acute desire and demand for high productivity and profit from Agricultural activity. High Tech cultivation implies judicious use of space, time and inputs; nothing more and nothing less. It is interesting to note that the different components that were listed in each case above are known to scientists and extension workers and to a lesser extent to farmers also. Piecing them together to formulate a practise is the novel thing. The major components of high tech cultivation assume the highest priority by virtue of the fact that the country has shortage for water and fertilizer and both are essential for any type of crops. Different components of high tech intervention can be used for growing crops, also for the growers to enhance production and quality .High tech intervention includes a number of components like- uniform virus free planting material, drip fertigation technology, assistance to post harvest management, and training and guidance to farmers, value addition opportunity, technical support to the farmers etc. These high tech interventions are introduced to other crops- a host of vegetables, fruits like Pomegranate, Cashew and Guava, and agricultural crops like, Cotton, Pulses, Sugarcane, and even cereals like, maize, wheat and rice. Another important aspect of such interventions is that only if concomitant interventions in marketing of produce are made, the whole exercise would bring profit to the farmers.

Breeds of rabbits: There is a diverse range of breeds when it comes to domestic rabbits, with each one possessing unique qualities. Currently, there are 38 recognized breeds and 87 varieties of rabbits that are well established all around the world. These breeds and varieties differ in various aspects such as color, size, type of hair coat, and other characteristics. Entrepreneurship can be defined as the propensity of mind to take calculated risks with confidence to achieve a pre-determined business or industrial objectives. That points out the risk-taking ability coupled with decision making. The word ‘entrepreneurship’ typically means to undertake. It owes its origin to the western societies. But even in the west, it has undergone changes from time to time. In the early 16th century, the term was used to denote army leaders. In the 18th century, it was used to denote a dealer who buys and sells goods at uncertain prices. Towards 1961, Schumpeter, used the term innovator, for an entrepreneur. Two centuries before, the concept of entrepreneurship was shady. It is only in the recent years that entrepreneurship has been recognized widely all over the world like in USA, Germany, Japan and in the developing countries like ours. Gunnar Myrdal rightly pointed out that Asian societies lack entrepreneurship not because they lack money or raw materials but because of their attitudes. Till recently, in the west, the entrepreneurship is mainly an attribute of an efficient manager. But the success achieved by entrepreneurs in developing countries demolishes the contention that entrepreneur is a rare animal and an elusive character. In India the definition of an entrepreneur being the one who undertakes to organize, own and run a business has been accepted in a National Seminar on entrepreneurship organized in Delhi in 1975. Still there has been no consensus on the definition of entrepreneurship and qualities of entrepreneurship.

Addressing these challenges is paramount for improving survival rates and ensuring the success of aquaculture systems. Nutritional management during the larval and juvenile stages plays a pivotal role in determining the overall health, growth performance, and survival of fish. Fish larvae and juveniles have distinct dietary requirements compared to adults due to their rapid growth, underdeveloped digestive systems, and the need for specific nutrients to support organ development, skeletal formation, and immune system maturation. A comprehensive understanding of these nutritional needs is essential for developing feeding strategies that optimize fish health and maximize growth potential.

The nutritional status of larval and juvenile fish significantly influences their physiological development and long-term survival. During the early stages of life, fish undergo rapid cell proliferation and differentiation, especially in tissues such as the muscle, digestive organs, and immune system. Introduction 
The Pleurotus species, belongs of the basidiomycetes class, are typically grown on non-composted lignocellulose substrates and have a shorter growth cycle compared to other types of mushrooms (Bellettini et al., 2018). These are shell-like fruiting bodies commonly known as “oyster mushroom” and also referred as “Dhingri mushroom” in India. The fanor spatula-shaped fruit body can be found in various colours depending on the species, including white, pink, yellow, grey, and blue (Verma et al., 2023). Their cultivation is popular due to the simple and low-cost methods. These mushrooms are highly favored not only for their taste, flavor, and pleasing texture but also for their nutritional and medicinal benefits (Sharma and Khanna 2019, Sarita et al., 2023). Pleurotus sp. are found naturally in both temperate and tropical regions across the globe which are cultivated more widely around the world due to their adaptable nature (Badshah et al., 2021). Despite their potential, India’s mushroom production has declined significantly, from 487 million MT in 2017 to 314.84 million MT in 2023 (Anonymous, 2023). Mushroom farming in Gujarat presents several opportunities due to various factors such as favorable climatic conditions, easy availability of raw material increasing market demand and supportive government initiatives. In India, rice straw is 80 Innovations of University Extension in Indian Agriculture mainly used as substrate for large scale mushroom production (Kundu et al., 2022). But, cultivation and consumption of mushroom were limited due to lack of awareness about the health benefits of this high valued food. However, by the efforts of KVKs under Agricultural Universities through the trainings and awareness programs, mushroom cultivation becomes popular among the people of Gujarat particularly in rural areas. Entrepreneurs and farmers can tap into this growing sector for profitable ventures, provided they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources.

The respiration of animals includes the exchange of gases either at the surface of the body or through the internal processes involving circulatory system. The gases that are exchanged are oxygen (O₂), carbon dioxide (CO₂) and the inert gas like nitrogen. When the organism respires, the O₂ that is taken up from the external environment is transported by the vascular system to individual cells within the tissues. At the same time this system picks up CO₂, an end product of cellular metabolism, and releases it to the environment. Thus respiration is a term applicable either to a whole organism or one of its cells. The mechanical process, by which respiration is achieved, is called ventilation.  This ventilation rate of aquatic organisms is controlled directly by the concentration of dissolve oxygen (DO₂) in water.

Respiration in aquatic medium is produced by a water current passing in a single direction. The area of respiratory surface is thus an important limiting factor in the movement and growth of the animal. For aquatic animals, if the water is at all deficient in O₂, the rate of breathing is naturally accelerated, and the animal appears to respire hurriedly. Other factors, which lead to an increased rate of respiration, are the stresses.

This paper presents a lucid and application-oriented delineation of the theory of probability which has proved itself as a basic tool in the theoretical and applied researches in almost all disciplines of science, specially, in the problems encompassing the real-life issues. Bio-informatics has recently emerged as a potential discipline of science and, needless to mention that the application of the probability theory has delved deep to elucidate the laws under its ambit. The inference procedures based on biochemical systems require the formulation of stochastic models (owing to the prevalence of low to moderate levels of stochasticity and noise in their dynamics) which, in turn, are developed using the probability laws in abundance. In Systems Biology, the estimation of parameters poses a prime task in biokinetic models developed on experimental data, and such estimation procedures have been possible only by applying appropriate tools derived using probability. Likelihood-free Bayesian inference that explicitly accounts for discrepancies between the model and the data, termed Approximate Bayesian Computation under model uncertainty is an off-shoot of the celebrated, Bayes' theorem of probability.

In India since ages, the dryland farmers adopted a kind of mixed farming involving traditional annual crops and livestock consisting of one or two cows / bullocks and few poultry birds. The bacteria in the genus Ralstonia, Xanthomonas, Agrobacterium, Xylella, Pantoea, Leifsonia, Curtobacterium, Enterobactor, Pseudomonas, Corynebacterium, Erwinia cause the most important bacterial diseases of crop plants. Few of them are directly responsible for post harvests losses during storage or transit and many of them are known to cause disease in the field. These diseases are economically important due their potential to cause crop failure in crops including spice crops. Among the bacteria genus Ralstonia is very important owing to its broad host range across the plant kingdom. Traditionally bacterial diseases of crops are prevented by the principle of ‘Disease Avoidance’ rather than disease control in the field. Their fast rate of multiplication, selective host and rapid spread in the field makes the disease control one of the challenges in the production system. The organic strategies are very well fit in the disease avoidance in the field. The preemptive strategies works exceedingly well for management of bacterial disease in any crop. Few genus such as Ralstonia, Enterobacter and Xanthomonas have been frequented in spice crops.
