Apterygotes

The Apterygota, which formerly included the other primitively wingless insects currently placed in the class Entognatha, are now restricted to the two orders Archaeognatha and Zygentoma, which in turn were formerly united as the Thysanura. Despite the superficial similarity of the two groups, it is now clear that they are not closely related, mainly because of fundamental differences in the mouthparts. The Archaeognathous mandibles are monocondylic, having a single articulating point with the head so that the mandible can rotate. The Zygentomous mandibles are dicondylic, with two articulating points that restrict the motion to a single plane yet enable the development of a much stronger biting action; this is the type found in all the higher insects, and the Zygentoma may well be the sister group of the Pterygota, or winged insects. Clearly the ‘Apterygota’ is not a monophyletic group and is simply retained for convenience in grouping these two orders that superficially resemble each other and have similar life histories.

ORIGIN OF INSECT

Entomology is a branch of zoology which deals with insects. In this branch we study the insect origin and evolution of insect and their diversity and classification and other parts of insect body. Insects belong to the class insecta in the phylum arthropoda, the largest group in the animal kingdom. All arthropods are characterised by having segmented body, claws, chitinous exoskeleton, ventral nervous system and dorsal heart. The class insecta is generally considered to have evolved from myriapod of some sort during the Devonian period. Based on different mandibles and mandibular movement concluded that insects are not direct insect group myriapods the mouth is located between the prostomium and the first body segment and the anus open in the periproct.
The first great step was the development of a pair of ventral appendage. Insect legs on each body segments and locomotion, parallel to this an improvement in the sense organs of the head occured eyes and Antenna were the ultimate result this level of organisation is met in onychophora. ‘Insect pest control’ includes all measures adopted to make the life of insects hard and ultimately to destroy them or to prevent their multiplication and spread. Such measures can be taken up before the appearance of the pests or after occurrence of the pests. To achieve this purpose , it is quite necessary to know the factors, which favor the occurrence of the pests and acquire enough knowledge about the nature and life cycle of the pests, the vulnerable growth stage at which they can be effectively destroyed and appropriate measures of control to destroy them Control measures may be either preventive or direct.

Need for pest control

Control measures for the control of pests have to be taken up as soon as the infestation reaches the economic threshold level. Failure to control the pests at this stage will result in further increase in the pest population and consequent loss in yield and economic loss.

The need for pest control is of two kinds :

i) For yield maximization. The only objective of pest control in this method is to maximize the yield. The cost incurred for pest control is most often more than the income accrued as a result of pest control. The method is adopted only with the object of increasing the yield as much as possible so that the country and the people may be benefited. In this method, pest control operations are taken up before the actual occurrence of the pest or before the pest infestation reaches the economic threshold level. Such treatments taken up to control the pests before their occurrence are known as ‘prophylactic treatments’

1. INSECT- PESTS OF MANGO

1. Mango hoppers: Idioscopus niveosparus, I. clypealis, Amritodus atkinsoni (Cicadellidae: Hemiptera)

Management

• Avoid close planting, as the incidence becomes very severe in overcrowded orchards.
• Orchards must be kept clean by ploughing and removal of weeds.
• Pruning of dense canopy to facilitate aeration and sunlight.
• Avoid excess use of nitrogenous fertilizers.
• Immediately after withdrawal of monsoon (September-October), off-seasonal trunk spraying with Malathion 50 EC @ 15 ml in 10 lit of water suppresses the adult hoppers from multiplying further and hinders their oviposition and also kills the newly hatched nymphs.
• Avoid application of all other synthetic pyrethroids as they have been reported to cause resurgence of hoppers.
• If overlapping generations of hoppers are found, spray imidacloprid @ 3 ml or acetamaprid 4 gm in 10 litres of water at panicle emergence stage.

Immediately after withdrawal of monsoon (September-October), offseasonal trunk spraying with Malathion 50 EC @ 15 ml in 10 lit of water suppresses the adult hoppers from multiplying further and hinders their oviposition and also kills the newly hatched nymphs.

The crop production has been found to make wide use of chemicals with hundreds of newly imported molecules. Unnecessary and excessive use of inorganic chemicals have led to an upsurge in the ecosystem and imbalance of nature. Natural enemies and bees get destroyed with chemical pesticides. Other side effects include resurgence of target pests and outbreak of secondary pests. Moreover, the residues of the pesticides in food products and environment have caused grave health issues. The contamination of pesticides into the fruits causes a quality decrease of the fruits, which is widely reported. The best available solution for sustainable agriculture can be the non-chemical organic/ natural farming that does not permit the usage of inorganic and synthetic chemicals for crop cultivation. Natural farming is the ecology-based production management system promoting and It provides biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity. The basic principles of organic/natural farming are materials and practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural systems that integrate parts of the farming system into the ecosystem. The first purpose of natural farming is to improve the health and productivity of interdependent communities of soil life, plants, animals, and people, that is termed as ‘one health concept’.
Natural farming is a system in which laws of nature are applied to agricultural practices. It has an advantage of natural biodiversity on every area of farmed resources; it also fosters the intricacy of living organisms, plant and animal alike, which would form each specific ecosystem to grow in harmony with food crops. Insects are indeed very mobile and well adapted to farm production systems as well as pest control tactics. Organic/natural farms focus on management, not eradication, of these insects. Thus, success in organic/natural farms depends on learning the biological, ecological, and behavioural information of the insects. The biological information as to what the insect needs to survive can be used to determine if insect pests can be deprived of some vital resource. Ecological information can be used to inform how the insect interacts with the environment and other species. shape an environment resistant to pests.

Insect pests are responsible for 10.8% of crop losses on an average. Their management is crucial in agriculture to protect crops and boost output. In organic farming systems, preventative measures are taken more often than curative. Understanding the impacts that the local climate, topography, soils, and all other facets of the production system are expected to have on crop performance and potential host/pest complexes is essential for developing successful organic crop protection techniques. Crop rotation, soil health management, host plant resistance, field location, monitoring pests and their natural enemies, vegetation management to enhance natural enemies and exert direct effects on pest populations, releases of bio-control agents and use of approved insecticides of biological origin are highlighted in organic farming in order to reduce pest damage. The safe and environmentally friendly methods for managing the pests in organic farming are discussed in this chapter.

1. Introduction

The fundamental tenet of organic pest management is the use of environmentally sound measures as outlined by worldwide and national organic agricultural standards. The emphasis of organic farming's pest management strategies is on the employment of numerous and diverse strategies integrated into the cropping system, which ultimately lowers the pest incidence. Pest and disease options mainly dependent on preventive measures in organic farming rather than curative and maintaining healthy ecosystems is priority. The farmer should have a better grasp of the pests and beneficial organisms that exist in the specific crop ecology when practising organic farming. The farmers must follow a monitoring mechanism in which they may able to act on the pest before they reach devastating levels.

Important insect-pests of vegetable crops

1. Aphids: (Myzus persicae)

The aphids damage the crop by sucking the cell sap from the leaves as stems. The affected leaves in severe cases curl-up and rolled. The plant may be stunted, wither and die. There are three different species of aphids. They are greenish or black in colour.

Pests

The English name ‘Pest’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Pestis’, which means causing destruction. Pests are defined as ‘those organisms, which compete with man in his food supply, damage his possessions and attack himself’. They are of vital concern to mankind in their everyday life, as they cause considerable damage directly as well as indirectly to crops, domestic animals, birds and to man himself. They are also responsible for causing or transmitting many serious diseases. Pests include thousands of invertebrates such as, insects, nematodes, mites, ticks, snails and slugs, crabs etc. and vertebrates such as, rats, squirrels, jackals, pigs and boars, porcupines, rabbits, deers, bats, some species of birds etc., which are destructive to plants and livestock. Several microorganisms such as, fungi, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, phytoplasma etc. are also pests in nature. Weeds and phanerogamic parasites are also pests in the true sense.

Sensing of heterogeneities in the field is the prerequisite for timely and spatially adjusted insect pests and disease management. Recent developments in sensor technologies have led to a broadening of their capacity to detect pests and thereby improve application in crop protection practice. These sensors can be space-borne (satellite), air-borne (airplane, unmanned aerial vehicle) or groundbased (handheld, vehicle-mounted) and provide spatial information that has added value management. Insects are usually unevenly distributed throughout an area in nature. Despite this knowledge, analytical methods and technology have limited insect pest management to uniform management decisions in the field. The methods and technology to map and analyse insect spatial distribution have been developed to a level where the uneven nature of insect populations can be considered for application of insect-pest management practices. Site-specific pest management utilizes spatial information about pest distribution to apply control method only where pest density is economically high within a field. This results saving in pesticide and labour cost. In conventional farming pesticides are applied uniformly to the field resulting in heavy use of pesticide and labour beside polluting the environment. Site-specific application of pesticides in precision farming helps to overcome this problem

Near-range and remote sensing techniques have demonstrated a high potential in detecting diseases and in monitoring crop stands for sub-areas with infected plants. The occurrence of plant diseases depends on specific environmental and epidemiological factors; diseases, therefore, often have a patchy distribution in the field. The use of non-invasive optical sensors for the detection, identification and quantification of plant diseases on different scales is made of in precision farming. Most promising sensor types are thermography, chlorophyll fluorescence and hyperspectral sensors. For the detection and monitoring of plant disease, imaging systems are preferable to non-imaging systems. To utilise the full potential of these highly sophisticated, innovative technologies and high dimensional, complex data for precision crop protection, a multi-disciplinary approach—including plant pathology, engineering, and informatics—is required.

India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables. The area under fruits alone is 32.05 lakh hectares with a production of 329.55 lakh tones. Jammu and Kashmir is the most important horticultural state with unique temperate fruit and European type of vegetable crop production. The total area during 2005-06 under the fruit crops in the state was 2.83 lakh hectares with a production of 1504.01 thousand metric tones (Table 1). Almost 45 per cent of economic returns under agriculture sector are contributed by horticulture, thereby adding 7 per cent to the Gross State Domestic Product (Anonymous, 2007). Among the fresh and dry fruits, apple and walnut, respectively, are the most important fruit crops in the Jammu and Kashmir. However, there is a wide gap between the present yield and the potential yield of fruits. One of the limiting factors for this gap in fruit production is severe attack of arthropod pests and diseases affecting yield and quality. Unlike agricultural crops, horticultural crops are grown as perennial monocultures, therefore, harbor the insect pest and disease problems that are entirely different and complex in nature. These two factors impose huge losses upon horticulture in terms of alleviated production, reduced quality and cost of management.

Kewda plants are hardly attacked by the insect pests and diseases. However, a few fungal and bacterial diseases are found to reduce the yield of flowers significantly. Some important insect pests and diseases of this plant with their nature of damage and suggested control measures are discussed here as reported by Jagadev et al. (2001).

Pests

1. Bag worm

During the dry season, leaves are found to be attacked by bag worm (Manatha albipes; Fam. Psychidae; order- Lepidoptera) (Plate 36). The larva, a foliage feeder, feeds on the chlorophyll and veins of leaves leaving the mid-rib resulting in perforation of leaves. In case of heavy infestation, the leaves become dry. Extensive damage arrests the vegetative growth resulting in significant reduction of flowering. Thus, the insect is considered to be of economic importance, but till date neither the extent of economic loss caused to the crop nor its control measures have been worked out.

Citrus genus belongs to the family Rutaceae that comes in various forms and sizes (from round to oblong) that commonly known as oranges, mandarins, limes, lemons and citrons. Besides being consumed as raw/fresh fruits, they are also used in the industries of beverages, cosmetic and pharmaceuticals. Citrus fruits have got abundant quantity of vitamin-C and other micronutrients like sugars, dietary fiber, potassium, folate, calcium, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, riboflavin and pantothenic acids etc. (Economos, 1999). Secondary metabolites like flavonoids, limonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, phenolic acids and other essential oils of this fruit also have anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous as well as cardiovascular protective effects (Lu et al., 2015).

Abstract

Insect pests, fungi, bacteria and other injuries are found in all types of environment and affect the growth, production and survival of both plants and animal species in one way or other. Similarly a large number of insects belonging to different orders, families and genera feed on pods and seeds in natural/ during storage and cause injuries. Regeneration failure in several broad leaved and conifers in India and other countries by heavy insect attack in the natural stands at the time of inflorescence and seed formation and on the ground after seed shedding causes heavy loss to number of afforestation programmes. Several methods like chemical, cultural, natural and biological are available for reduction in loss caused to seeds by insects. Generally, earlier the control measure, the smaller the destruction. Forest seeds can be stored safely by taking some precautions before their final storage, viz. inspection of the seeds for their moisture content, visual examination of cleaning method, scanning through soft X-ray technique, thermotherapy or treatments with chemicals, etc. The present chapter has covered review regarding damage caused to seeds by different insect pests and their management options.

Fruits are very important in human diet, as they are chief sources of vitamins and micronutrients. Variable agro-climatic condition in India provides tremendous scope for cultivation of fruit crops. Among fruits, apple, pear, cherry, plum, peach, apricot, walnut and almond (temperate fruits); mango, grapes, banana, citrus, pineapple (tropical and subtropical fruits); pomegranate (arid zone fruit) are important fruit grown in India. Insect-pests are amongst one of the major constraint for the low productivity of fruit crops in India. Therefore, it is important to have some information of the important insect-pests of fruit tree and their management. Over 1000 species of insects found damaging fruit trees all over the world, of these as many as 800 insect species have been intercepted from India (Butani, 1979). The information on insect pests of apple and other temperate fruits in India have been reviewed by several workers (Pruthi and Batra, 1960; Butani, 1979; Bhalla and Gupta, 1993; Sharma and Thakur, 1996). In India, more than 200 insect species on apple trees (Bhalla and Pawar, 1977), 70 species on pear, 80 species on peach, 60 species on plum, 30 species on apricot (Butani, 1979), 85 species on grapevine (Tandon and Verghese, 1994), 175 species on mango, 182 species on banana (Dhaliwal et al., 2006) and 250 species of insect and mites on citrus (Pruthi and Mani, 1945; Wadhi and Batra, 1964; Rajput and Hari Babu, 1985; Tandon, 1993) have been reported. The important insect-pests of fruits are as follows:

The orchids are commercially important group of flowering plants and their flowers are affluent in uniqueness in their shape, size and colour, exquisitely attractive, remain fresh condition for long period of time in comparison to other flowers. Orchidaceae is the second largest family among floriculture; about 25000 to 35000 species of orchids have been reported over the world (Rampal and Nagrare, 2006). India accounts for nearly 7 per cent of world’s orchids genetic diversity contributed 1300 species under 184 genera (Arora, 1983; Rampal and Nagrare, 2006) and 1150 species belonging to 164 genera (Satish Kumar, 1994) of which about 800 species are found in the North Eastern region of the country (Nagaraju et al., 2006) and many more are discovered year after year because of the prevailing congenial climatic conditions, diverse terrain and altitudinal variations, which provide suitable habitat for orchids.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn.) is an important fruit crop cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions, serving nutritional, medicinal and aesthetic need of human beings. It is grown in Iran, Spain, India, Moracco, Egypt, Afghanistan, Arabia, West Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, China, USA and Japan.World pomegranate production is currently estimated at 1.5-2.0 million tonnes, 90% of which is in Iran and India. The rest is distributed amongst various Mediterranean countries, China, the United States, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and Argentina (CBI, 2014). In India, it is found from Kashmir to Kanyakumari cultivated in Maharashtra,Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,Karnataka andAndhra Pradesh.Among the different states growing pomegranate, Maharashtra is the largest producer occupying 2/3^rd of the cultivated area in India followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Pest

A pest is any animal or plant detrimental to crops, livestock and forestry. The term is also used of organisms that cause a nuisance, such as in the home. An older usage is of a deadly epidemic disease, specifically plague. In its broadest sense, a pest is a competitor of humanity, means disease causing microbes, plant devouring insects, macro-fauna like rats and moles, weeds, off type plants and even human beings are pests in perspective of plants.

IPM

IPM is a pest management system that in the context of associated environment and population dynamics, utilizes all the appropriate techniques to minimize the pest population levels below those causing economic injury. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) includes cultural Practices, Host Plant Residence, Mechanical control, Biological control, Use of Bio-pesticides, botanicals and Chemical control.

A number of insects infest seeds in storage. These insects infest seeds to fulfill their feed and shelter requirements, which result into qualitative as well as quantitative loss of seeds. Indian climate is very favourable for their multiplication and growth throughout the year. Storage pests move along with commercial products from one area to another and even to different countries in the world. Some adult insects are strong fliers and may spread from one to another place of storage or from source of infestation. Generally, all insects infesting seeds in storage belongs to insect order Coleoptera and Lepidoptera (Table 4.1). Some minor species belong to Pscoptera. These pests cause losses to man by destroying large quantities of grain, corn, legumes (beans, lentils and peas), milled cereal products, flour, bran, macaroni and other paste products, dried fruits, dried vegetables, cheese, nuts, candy and other food materials. They contaminate and thus eliminate for human consumption, far more food than they eat and either cause direct loss or transmit diseases to man and his domestic animals. These insects can be categorized as major or minor pests according to the loss of seeds caused by them. Similarly, on the basis of their feeding behavior, they can be grouped as follows:

Introduction

The increasingly precarious situation facing the world’s hill regions has been the focus of a growing level of awareness over the past two decades. The high altitude regions offer a challenge to agricultural development agencies which is shared by many hill areas of the world characterized by marginality, extreme diversity, environmental fragility and complex smallholder farming systems. There is justifiable concern relating to the conservation of hill and mountain ecosystems, to the extent that the concept of sustainability has been adopted as a broad slogan by the environmental movement (Lele, 1991).

Conditions specific to mountain regions, such as inaccessibility and diversity have placed a high premium on large families, encouraging population growth. Children are essential to family subsistence strategies offering free labour, and they are consequently considered to be a source of wealth. Population control measures in these regions have ignored this scenario (Sharma and Banskota 1990; Jodha, 1991).

DEFINITION

Pheromones are chemical produced as messengers that affect the behavior of other individuals of insects. The term pheromone was introduced by Peter Karlson and Martin Liischer (1959) and is based on the Greek pherein (to transport) and hormon (to stimulate) is a chemical that triggers a natural behavioural response in another member of the same species. There are alarm pheromones, food trail pheromones, sex pheromones. And many are others that affect behaviour or physiology. Their use among insects has been particularly well documented, although many vertebrates and plants also communicate using pheromones. Pheromones are chemicals released by an organism into its environment enabling it to communicate with other members of its own species.

A number of plant substances have been considered for use as insect antifeedants or repellents, but apart from some natural mosquito repellents, little commercial success has ensued for plant substances that modify arthropod behavior. Several factors appear to limit the success of botanicals, most notably regulatory barriers and the availability of competing products that are cost-effective and relatively safe compared with their predecessors.

Farmers still rely heavily on insecticides because of their efficiency, portability, and speedy returns on investment. Although synthetic organic insecticides are highly efficient, their widespread usage has led to toxicity to natural enemies, toxic residues in plants and the environment, insect resistance, and a resurgence in insect populations. Ripper (1956) first time recognized the problem of resurgence in plant protection.

Metcalf (1986) distinguished between two types of resurgence: primary insect resurgence, in which populations of target insects that had been suppressed by insecticide application quickly recover to excessive levels (Fig. 1.A), and secondary insect outbreak, in which non-target species develop into serious insect s after insecticide application (Fig. 1.B).

Primary insect resurgence

Primary insect resurgence occurs when the target insect population increases to at least as high (Hajek, 2004) or higher (Hardin et al., 1995) than in an untreated control or higher than before the treatment (Pedigo and Rice, 2006).

Secondary insect resurgence/ secondary insect outbreak (Type II resurgence)

The phenomenon known as replacement of a primary insect with a secondary insect, or secondary insect outbreak, occurs when the population of a non-target insect, which is harmful to the crop, experiences a surge following the application of a insecticide aimed at controlling the population of the primary insect. A second insect outbreak is also called resurgence. A secondary insect outbreak is the rise of a non-target species after an insecticide has been used.

19.1. Introduction

A wave of research on insect pheromones has been initiated in early 1960’s in response to public concern and alarm about chemical pesticides to develop an elegant and ecologically safe technology for the control of insect pests. Pheromones, a class of semiochemicals are considered as ‘Biochemical Pesticides’, belong to the subdivision of Biorational pesticides which include “Microbials” (Viruses, Bacteria, Pathogens etc.) and “Biochemicals” (insect plant growth regulators, semiochemicals etc.). The term biorational (biological + rational) pesticides can be defined as the use of specific and selective chemicals, often with a unique modes of action, that are compatible with natural enemies and the environment, with minimal effect on non-target organisms. Biorational control is based on a diversity of chemical, biological and physical approaches for controlling insect pests which results in minimum risk to man and the environment (Horowitz  et al., 2009).

History

• Aristotle (384-322 BC): A good beginning of taxonomy was made by Aristotle (Historia Animalium). He erected entomon. He could distinguish mandibulates and haustellates; winged and wingless forms. The insect orders like coleopteran, dipteral, psyche (Lepidoptera) were created by him. Hence, he was called as Father of Biological Classification.

• Linnaeus (1707-1778): Father of Taxonomy and Binomial Nomenclature. He coined the term Insecta. He used the term Systematics. His greatest contribution is Systema Naturae.

• Brawer (1885): Laid foundations for modern system of classification and responsible to divide class Insecta into Apterygota and Pterygota.

• Michael Anderson (1727-1806): Contemporary and rival of Linnaeus. Introduced Numerical Taxonomy and hence is called Father of Numerical Taxonomy. 

• Johan Christian Fabricius (1745–1808), the first systematist considered to specialize on insects, published in 1778 his Philosophia Entomologica (40), the first textbook of entomology.

• Fabricius had already set forth his system of insects in 1775 (Systema Entomologiae), his system of genera in 1776 (Genera Insectorum), and then numerous works on species, culminating in individual accounts of the species of each order

1. Introduction
Aquaculture, the farming of fish and other aquatic organisms, has experienced exponential growth over the last few decades, becoming one of the fastest-growing food production sectors globally. This expansion is driven by the rising global demand for seafood, fueled by population growth, increased per capita consumption, and the recognition of fish as a healthy and nutrient-rich food source. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aquaculture now supplies more than half of the world’s fish for human consumption, a significant leap from the 1980s when it contributed only a fraction of global seafood production. However, this rapid growth poses challenges, particularly with respect to sustainable feed production.
One of the primary concerns in aquaculture is the reliance on fishmeal, a high-protein feed ingredient traditionally sourced from small, wild-caught fish species such as anchovies, sardines, and menhaden. Fishmeal is rich in essential nutrients, particularly amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients, making it an ideal component for aquafeeds. However, its dependence on wild fish stocks has raised sustainability concerns, as the continuous harvesting of these species can lead to overfishing, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation. Moreover, the rising demand for fishmeal in aquafeeds, coupled with finite fishery resources, has driven up its price, making it less economically viable for aquaculture operations, especially for small-scale farmers.

Onion production is constrained by insect pests and diseases that damage seedlings, foliage, roots and bulbs and reduce both yield and market quality. Important pests include onion thrips, leaf miners, cutworms, armyworms and onion maggots. Major diseases include damping-off, basal rot, downy mildew, purple blotch, white rot and pink-root rot. Some insects also transmit damaging viral diseases. This chapter presents integrated cultural, biological, botanical, behavioural and chemical strategies for managing these threats. Crop rotation, sanitation, healthy planting material, proper spacing, resistant varieties, traps, barrier crops, beneficial microorganisms, natural enemies and need-based pesticides are discussed as components of sustainable crop protection and resistance management.

Introduction

Medicinal plants are known to Indian traditional healers since time immemorial. The plants were collected from the wild and were used in many preparations of wellness products. India is endowed with diverse group of medicinal plants accounting for more than 8000 species which are being used in more than 10,000 herbal products. Ninety percent of herbal industry’s requirement of raw materials is meted out from the natural ecosystem-forests-resulting in ruthless exploitation and destruction of its natural habitats (Mathivanan et al., 2016). Medicinal plants are cultivated or found in the wild throughout the country and are used for various purposes including traditional herbal remedy (infusion, tincture and decoction) and extraction of phytochemicals for homoeopathic and ayurvedic drugs, cosmetics, neutraceuticals/dietary supplements, functional foods and aroma therapy oils (Nagpal et al., 2004). The large scale cultivation of medicinal plants may face the problem of sudden appearance of large populations of insect pests in a single crop. Like other plants, medicinal plants too have to bear the devastating effects of injurious insect-pests, which are not only harmful for the plant but also, deteriorate the quality of the produce, thus hampering its medicinal value.This chapter discusses major insect-pest and their eco-friendly measures in medicinal plants so that a package of practices can be recommended for an easy adoption even by small and marginal farmers and gardeners in India.

The vegetables form an essential component of the human diet especially in case of India and some South Asian countries where sizeable population is vegetarian. India ranks second in the production of vegetables after China and occupy 5.993 million hectares area and the total annual production is around 90.83 metric tonnes (Gopalakrishnan, 2007). There is a need of around 5-6 million tones of food to feed 1.3 billion India’ population by 2020 AD. It is an established fact that any attempt at improvement of agricultural production by using new cultivars with the recommended package of practices has invariably resulted in the increase in activity of damage by pests and diseases. Vegetables are more prone to insect-pests and diseases mainly due to their succulence as compared to other crops. The pest problems on vegetables can be more serious because of the favourable conditions which are provided for multiplication by the present methods of cultivation. The major constraints in vegetable production include the extensive crop losses due to increased pest infestation directly or due to viral diseases vectored by insects. The extent of crop losses in vegetables varies with the plant type, location, damage potential of the pest involved and cropping season. The crop losses to the tune of 40 per cent have observed in vegetable crops. The increased demand and limited productivity of local cultivars, led to introduction of high yielding varieties and hybrids. As a result dramatic changes in pest scenario occurred and minor pests became major pests. Indiscriminate use of pesticides has led to severe ecological consequences like destruction of natural enemies, effect on non-target organisms, pesticide residues in vegetables and resistance of the pests to pesticides. The modern pest management is aimed at educating the farmers on various issues of pest management like identification of the pests, natural enemies, and judicious use of pesticides with alternate methods of pest control like cultural, mechanical, biological and behavioural (use of pheromones) management. The strategy for the control of insect-pests on vegetable crops is necessarily to be different from the other crops because of the nature of utilization of vegetables. This is especially true in the case of chemical control. Insecticides which are highly toxic and are known to leave hazardous residues cannot be recommended on vegetables. The vegetable crops have been grouped into summer and winter vegetables depending upon their season of cultivation in majority of areas. The present chapter deals with the insect pests infesting summer and winter vegetables and their possible management options.

INTRODUCTION

The interactions of plant communities – natural or man-made, with their pests are invariably complex, and the complexity further increases with the diversity of the system. When a farmer adopts agroforestry instead of monocultures, the opportunities of relatively easy monitoring of the pest and their frequent disturbance through crop rotation, tillage and burning are traded against a greater stability of the system with an increased potential for self-regulation, which is however complex and more difficult to control. For this trade to be successful in reducing pest risks, agroforesters should not merely rely on increased diversity, but should attempt to integrate into their decisions the full range of traditional and scientific knowledge on the interactions between plant species, planting designs and management practices on one hand, and pests and their natural enemies on the other hand. This obviously requires collecting knowledge and organizing in more systematic way than up to now.

India is contributing about 10% of the world’s vegetables, and in terms of production, the country stands second after China. The existing area under vegetable cultivation in India is around 6.89 million hectare with a production of about 96.54 million tonnes. There will be a demand of 151-193 million tonnes of vegetables in India by 2030 (Dhaliwal et al., 2006). There are extensive crop losses in vegetable crops due to increased insect infestations. Since vegetables are grown round the year, there is carry over of insect-pests across the seasons and also from sowing until harvesting. Vegetables also invite more pest problems because of their cultivation under high fertility conditions leading to high plant succulence. High yielding varieties and hybrids are further more prone to the attack of insect-pests. Insect infestation affects the quality and market value of vegetables adversely and it is estimated that 30-40% of the total production is lost due to the attack of pests (Lal et al., 2004). A large number of pesticides are being used repeatedly to manage the insect-pests in India. Indiscriminate use of pesticides has led to many problems like toxic residues in edible parts of the vegetables, adverse effects on non-target organisms and beneficial insects, resurgence of secondary pests and development of resistance in major pests to pesticides and also environmental pollution. Therefore, latest approach has been to minimize the use of highly toxic insecticides by integrating different strategies of pest control like use of biological control agents, pesticides of plant origin, insect resistant varieties and other cultural practices. In this chapter, efforts have been made to highlight the distribution, host range, identifying characters, biology and nature of damage of important insect-pests of vegetables and also the methods of their management crop or pest wise.

MAJOR INSECT-PEST OF MANGO

1. Mango hopper (Idioscopus atkinsani, I. niveosparsus, I. clypealis)

This is one of the most serious pests of mango. They are small greenish wedge-shaped insect. They cause serious damage to the crop at the time of flowering and fruiting. Both adult and nymphs suck sap from the tender plant parts, inflorescence, young shoots and panicles. They excrete sugary shirring substance on which shooty moulds develops. Cloudy and humid weather are favourable for their development.

Efficiency of pest control by insecticides is dependent on the correct type of pesticide formulation applied at the proper time and correct dosage, besides the good equipment. Equipment used to apply insecticides must be suited to the crop (or other situation in which the pest is to be controlled), to the scale of operation, and to the formulation of chemical to be applied. In the long run, it is good economy to buy the best equipment available.

Application equipment of high quality means not only good, durable construction but also good design that gives it a professional appearance. Because it is desirable and often necessary to utilize pesticides in a variety of ways, various types of dispensing equipment have been developed. This equipment is placed in the following categories: (1) Sprayers, (2) Dusters, and (3) Granule Applicators. In addition, specialised equipment of various sorts (such as mist machines and fog generators) are available for particular purposes. Since detailed consideration of pesticide application equipment is out of the scope of this book, only a brief consideration is given here to some important features of the main types of equipment.

Insecticide classification majorly divided into three categories. A. based on chemical group, B. mode of entry in the insect, C. based on toxicity.

A. Classification of Insecticides based on chemical group

Historians have traced the use of pesticides to the time of Homer around 1000 B.C. earliest records of insecticide use pertain to the burning of “brimstone” (Sulfur) as a fumigant. Pliny the Elder (A.D. 23-79) recorded most of the earlier insecticide uses in his Natural History and included among these was the use of gall from a green lizard to protect apples from worms and rot. Later, a variety of materials used viz., extracts of pepper and tobacco, soapy water, whitewash, vinegar, turpentine, fish oil, brine, lye and many others. At the beginning of World War II (1940), insecticide selection was limited to several inorganic compounds, arsenicals, petroleum oils, nicotine, pyrethrum, rotenone, sulfur, hydrogen cyanide gas, and cryolite. It was during World War II that opened the Chemical Era with the introduction of a totally new concept of insect control.

Introduction

Analysis of insecticide formulations are critical for the availability of quality insecticides in the market for ultimate benefit of farmers and ecosystem health. This chapter highlights the significance of comprehensive insecticide formulation analysis protocols, encompassing methods for determining active ingredient and assessing physical and chemical parameters. Employing advanced analytical techniques such as spectroscopy and chromatography for insecticide formulation analysis will eventually maintain the quality of insecticides for the sustainable management of pests.

In India, over 339 pesticides are registered that includes insecticides, fungicides, herbicides (DPPQS, 2024). The current market of non-genuine insecticide is INR 3,200 crores (USD 525 Million) which constitutes 25 per cent by value and 30 per cent by volume of the total domestic market of agrochemicals in India as per Industry reports, primary interviews, news articles and Tata Strategic analysis (FICCI, 2015). Monitoring registration and regulation of insecticides is governed by the Insecticide Management Bill 2020, which replaced the Insecticide Act 1968 (DPPQS, 2023). The Insecticide Act of 1968 established the Central Insecticide Laboratory, Faridabad, under section 16 with two regional insecticide testing laboratories at Chandigarh and Kanpur (DPPQS, 2023). Current Quality Control of Insecticides in States/UTs during the last five years shows that 68078 insecticide samples were analysed (DPPQS, 2023). In the beginning, these laboratories involved in analysing insecticide samples drawn by any officer or the body authorized by the Central or State Governments and submit certificates of analysis to the concerned authority. Regional Pesticide Testing Laboratories (RPTLs) had a huge target of analysis of 1550 samples per annum that necessitated the establishment of 71 State Pesticide Testing Laboratories (SPTL) spread across India of which 14 are NABL accredited (DPPQS, 2023).

Formulation is a word that can be used in a lot of different ways, but at its core, it means putting things together in the right way, usually by following a formula. Insecticides come in different forms, which are called formulations. A formulation is just the way a product is used. The chemical or biological makeup of a pesticide and its active ingredient (also called the active substance) determine how it works on living things. Most of the time, the active ingredient is mixed with other things, and the product as it is sold will need to be weakened even more before it can be used. Formulation makes a drug easier to handle, store, and use. It can also have a big effect on how well it works and how safe it is.

Insecticides come in many different forms because the active ingredients vary in how easily they dissolve, how well they kill pests, and how easy they are to handle and move. The pesticide is made up of both active and non-active (used to be called “inert”) chemicals. The manufacturer will need to know the identity of the pest, as well as details about its feeding behavior, reproduction, and life cycle, in order to create an effective formulation. Manufacturers also take into account factors including surface and equipment type, runoff and drift rates, pest habits, and safety when formulating insecticides. Inactive materials (adjuvants/ additives) are often added to insecticides to make them stick to the application surface or spread out over leaves. There are solvents (liquids) that dissolve the active ingredient, carriers (liquids or solids) that aid in the delivery of the active ingredient, etc.. Boosting the efficacy of active ingredients requires additives, such as spreaders, stickers, wetting agents, compatibility agents, foaming agents, etc.

Insecticide use for agriculture has increased along with food quality and quantity, but self-harm has also increased. Despite a high rate of insecticide poisoning and sometimes usage for homicide, little is known about insecticide management.

Insecticide poisoning kills up to 300,000 people around the world every year. According to hospital admission data, most estimates of insecticide poisoning in the short term have been based on numbers of people poisoned by insecticide s. This represents only a small part of the real number, as it includes only the most dangerous cases. IS 4015 is a standard guide for handling cases of pesticide poisoning.

Fresh vegetables are essential part of a healthy diet as it is an important source of vitamins, minerals and fibers. The nutritional content of vegetables varies considerably, though generally they contain little protein, fat and varying proportions of vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Vitamin B6, pro-vitamins, dietary minerals and carbohydrates (Woodruff, 1995; Whitaker, 2001). Vegetables contain multifarious other phytochemicals, some of which have been claimed to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-carcinogenic properties (Steinmetz and Potter, 1996; Gruda, 2005). A balanced diet should contain 250 - 325 g of vegetables and the average human requirement for vegetable is 285 g per person per day (Attavar, 2000). This perception of nutrition makes vegetables as a valued farm output.

Insecticides are one of the key control measures to combat the insect pests for sustainable agricultural production in the world. Synthetic insecticides have been only strategy to control the resurgent and resistant insect population in of high value crops not only in India but also in the world. The advent of synthetic insecticides in the mid-20th century made the control of insect and other arthropod pests easy and much more effective, and such chemicals remain essential in modern agriculture despite their environmental issues.

INTRODUCTION

Insecticide resistance poses a severe threat to agricultural productivity in India and in other countries of the world. Humans have had the ingenuity to develop thousands of pesticides to protect foodstuffs, livestock, and health and the use of these poisons has triggered a rapid evolutionary response in many target species and some nontarget species of invertebrates, microorganisms, higher plants and vertebrates. Insecticide exposure led to nullify their toxic effects through genetic selection for individuals with the biochemistry or behaviour. Continual development of new compounds and its greater use and increase in input insecticide cost is mainly due increase in resistance. Reduction in insecticide efficacy from insect resistance has major economic, environmental and human health implications. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a convenient descriptor for wide range of still-evaluating pest control program that emerged from chemical prophylaxis practiced. IPM theory has fostered a transition from primarily chemical control to programs tempered with biological information and input tailored to each agro ecosystem, crop and pest situation in production.

Insecticide resistance to both fumigants and contact insecticides is an increasing problem in controlling stored grain and grain product insects throughout the world (Table 14.1). Hence, persons engaged in food commodity storage and preservation world over are concerned about the resistance of stored product insects to contact insecticides and fumigants. It is, therefore, necessary to work out strategies to delay or minimize the probability of resistance evolution. Resistance to pesticides is the ability of a strain of insects to tolerate doses of toxicants which would prove lethal to a normal population of insects of the same species. Resistance results when occasional resistant individuals arise in a population and survive the pesticidal treatment. These survivors then reproduce and confer the resistance to their offspring in succeeding generations. Resistance is the ability of a population (of insects) to survive a dose (of insecticide) that would normally kill 100 per cent of a susceptible population. Insecticide resistance is a dynamic phenomenon dependent on biochemical, physiological, genetic and ecological factors.

The chances of development of insecticide resistance in stored grain insect pest are more because of their life style, i.e., to remain confined in limited area. This results in more common inbreeding of the homozygous resistant strain resulting into homozygous resistant progeny. At the same time their management, once detected, can be easily achieved with the application of sufficiently acceptable sufficiently higher dose of the most appropriate insecticide to eliminate all the resistant survivors

The insect pest of stored grains can be conveniently divided into two groups, i.e., coleopterous and lepidopterous, therefore, the subject on these two groups has been pooled accordingly.

Medicines used for controlling insect pests are known as Pesicides which have assumed great importance in today’s high yielding and intensive agricultural system as well as public health programme, all over the world. The term pesticide is an all-inclusive word meaning killer of pests and includes substances used for controlling, preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest.

Insecticide mode of action is divided in to four major chapters 1. Nerve & Muscle 2. Growth & development 3. Respiration & Energy production 4. Metabolic process 5. Unknown or Non-Specific (multisite inhibitors) (Source: IRAC). To understand the mode of action of insecticides, it is necessary to understand the function of nervous system and how it works in insect. The nervous system functions transmits information throughout the body. This system has three components: 1) Peripheral nervous system (PNS) to receive and transmit incoming signals (taste, smell, sight, sound, and touch) and to transmit outgoing signals to the muscles and other organs, effectively communicating them how to respond, and 2) Central nervous system (CNS) to interpret the signals and coordinate the body’s responses and movements. 3) Visceral or sympathetic nervous system (VNS) directly connected with the brain that supplies nerves to the anterior part of the alimentary canal (foregut and midgut), heart, and spiracles. Some additional nerves arise from posterior compound ganglion of ventral nerve cord (VNC) which supply nerves to the posterior part of gut and reproductive system.

Insecticide resistance is a growing concern for those who need insecticides for medical, veterinary, and agricultural control of insect pests. In response to the introduction of DDT resistance in 1947, the incidence of resistance has increased annually by an alarming amount. Resistance is “the inherited ability of a strain of some organism to survive doses of a toxicant that would kill the majority of individuals in a normal population of the same species” (WHO, 1957).

As a result of continued insecticide application, the proportion of resistant insects increases compared to that of susceptible and the population becomes increasingly difficult to control

An adaptation to a pesticide leads to reduced susceptibility to it among the pest population targeted by that pesticide. In nature, pests develop resistance to chemicals through natural selection. In the most resistant organisms, their genetic traits are passed on to their descendants. Since 1945, at least 500 species of pests have developed resistance to pesticides (Anonymous, 2007), but other sources estimate as many as 1000 species (Miller, 2004).
