General Aspects About Insects

‘Insects’ are almost ubiquitous. They are found all over the world, in the icy regions of the poles, deserts, forests, mountain peaks, oceans and even in oil wells. They can adopt themselves to any climatic conditions and can live in any habitat where food is available. Insects are mostly small, air-breathing organisms of the animal world. Most of the insects live freely in nature. Many species are wild and harmless to human beings. Many are beneficial because of their role in the ecosystem. Some are a part of the food chains of wild creatures, while others through predation and parasitism hold in check many other species of insects. Insects also play a vital role in pollination. Relatively only a few species are harmful to man and are his chief competitor on earth.

At present, food and nutrition security are the prime aspects which need to be addressed in an efficient way. It has been projected that by 2050 the global population will reach 9.2 billion which in turn enhances annual demand for agricultural products by 1.1 per cent from 2005 to 2050 (McKenzie and Williams 2015).

As we draw the threads of “Droughts through the Ages” together, we are left with a profound understanding of the cyclical yet evolving nature of drought. From the earliest whispers of human history to the stark realities of our modern world, the absence of life-sustaining water has cast a long shadow, shaping civilizations, sparking innovation, and at times, triggering societal upheaval. This book has journeyed through millennia, examining the historical accounts, scientific understandings, and societal responses to these arid interludes. Yet, the true value of this historical lens lies not merely in recounting the past, but in illuminating a path towards a more resilient future. • The preceding chapters have underscored several crucial insights. We have witnessed the devastating impacts of prolonged dry spells on ancient empires, the ingenuity displayed in developing early irrigation systems, and the growing scientific understanding of the complex interplay between atmospheric conditions, land surface processes, and human activities in driving

Millets categorized as cereal crops are rich sources of nutrients, mostly cultivated across arid and semiarid areas of the world, specifically in southeast Asia and Africa. Millets are easy to cultivate, demands minimal field input and have appreciable market values. Despite of great value of millets, their production is limited mainly because of climate change which triggers multiple abiotic stresses like drought, high temperature, salinity, etc. Even though millets can withstand the majority of abiotic stresses, it necessitates their further improvement to develop more resilience against unprecedented effects of climate change by incorporating or enhancing stress tolerance characteristics. It is currently not attainable to create stress tolerant and high yielding varieties through conventional breeding techniques and thus modern approaches like genome editing become inevitable to achieve this goal. Also, available data for genome sequences of millets in these years promotes genome editing. The technique has drawn tremendous attention recently due to its potential in precise modification of alleles and is considerable to speed-up crop breeding by targeting important traits with precision. Additionally, many stress-resistant genes are identified in related monocots and are reported to be orthologs of millets which could assist genome editing for developing stress resilience and productivity in millets. Above all, the technique has also gained legal acceptance and has potential to revolutionary counter climatic challenges.

1. Introduction

The once fantastical concept of the Metaverse is now poised to become the next major innovation(Jung et al., 2024). It is widely acknowledged by scholars and researchers that the Metaverse is an idea of technology that attracts itself as a three-dimensional monotony of the Internet. Moreover, as noted earlier, definitions of the metaverse in existing literature and among professionals reflect the integration of physical objects in virtual space as a consumable description of the metaverse great role(Dwivedi et al., 2022). The key to any Metaverse technology is their user experience. Analysis of Metaverse applications shows that most current applications are stand-alone or centralized. These applications provide different user experiences, based on the cardinal technology and interface devices used to communicate within virtual environments.2

Abstract

Anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (APB) are having the genetic potential of converting radiant energy into chemical energy useful for growth and metabolic activities without evolving oxygen. They are physiologically, metabolically and phylogenetically versatile group of organism spread in five distinct phyla; Proteobacteria (purple bacteria), Chlorobi (green-sulfur bacteria), Chloroflexi (green non-sulfur bacteria), Fir micutes (heliobacteria) and Acidobacteria. Different group of APB harbors distinct photosynthetic pigments, carotenoids, and a photosynthetic reaction center. These group of bacteria succeeds in a natural environment with light availability and presence of anoxic conditions as the pigment, and the molecular oxygen inhibits bacteriochlorophyll synthesis whereas few APB can grow in hypooxic as well as in aerobic conditions. Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB) pathway, reverse tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycle, and hydroxypropionate cycle are reported pathways for carbon assimilation in APB to fix carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis occurs in either intracytoplasmic membrane (ICM) or membrane bound chlorosomes and in the cytoplasm for few APB. APB have a wide range of potential applications including removal of H₂S from wastewater and gas streams, hydrogen production, degradation of xenobiotic, toxic metals and radioisotopes, work as host for the production of challenging membrane proteins, source of carotenoids and terpenoids, single cell protein, extensive applications in agriculture and production of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer activity. The chapter is focused on the diversity of different types of APB, habitats, their growth requirements, photosynthetic machinery and biotechnological applications of APB.

Introduction

Millets, which are small-seeded grasses belonging to the Poaceae family, have a rich historical and cultural significance as they have been cultivated for thousands of years (Goron and Raizada, 2015; Wen et al., 2014; Cheng, 2018). They remain an important crop in various regions worldwide, particularly in developing countries where they serve as a staple food for millions, especially in rural areas. Millets offer several advantages as they are gluten free and provide valuable protein, fiber, and minerals, making them highly nutritious for both human consumption and animal feed. The diverse range of millets includes pearl millet (Cenchrus americanus (L.) Morrone), foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) P.Beauv.), proso millet (Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx.; syn. Panicum miliaceum Walter), finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.), barnyard millet (Echinochloa frumentacea Link), kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculatum L.), little millet (Panicum sumatrense Roth), and more (Ahmad et al., 2018; Bora et al., 2019). These grains have a significant historical presence globally, with evidence of cultivation in ancient China, Greece, and Rome (Li et al., 2020a; Huan et al., 2022). In India, millets have maintained their importance as a vital crop for thousands of years and continue to be an integral part of the diet in many regions of the country today (Padulosi et al., 2015; Li et al., 2020b).

Introduction

Groundwater resources are under stress globally due to various reasons including increasing water demand, impending climate change, industrialization, land use/land cover changes, etc. Adequate sustainable development strategies have to be adopted for the management of groundwater resources. Irrespective of the developmental status of countries all over the world, groundwater serves as a crucial resource for meeting fundamental needs. However, increasing population, water demand, surface water contamination, and recent patterns of climate unpredictability have caused increasing reliance on groundwater as reported by several researchers (Adimalla and Taloor 2020; Aladejana et al. 2020; Cuthbert et al. 2019; Green 2016; Hamed et al. 2018; Jasrotia et al. 2019; Khalaj et al. 2019; Li 2016; McGill et al. 2019; Morsy et al. 2017; Taloor et al. 2020).

Even in India, water scarcity has been reported in many parts, though the country receives relatively higher rainfall. However, the rainfall pattern has changed over the last few years. The country has been experiencing significant spatiotemporal changes in rainfall patterns, leading to fewer rainy days and more extreme rainfall, which many studies have attributed to global climate change and anthropogenic influences. The rainfall variability has substantial impacts on water availability, agricultural productivity, and welfare of the 1.2 billion people in India because agriculture in India feeds about 17.2% of the global population and more than 56% of the agricultural land is rain-fed. Rapid and heavy patterns of rainfall result in the draining of most of the rainfall as surface runoff particularly on higher slopes, and reaches the surface water bodies, thereby reducing the infiltration and subsequent groundwater recharge. These variations in rainfall have ultimately affected the groundwater behavior and availability in many river basins.

Insolation is a term that might sound abstract but is fundamentally the driving force behind nearly all physical processes on Earth, including those within our precious aquatic environments. In this chapter, we will unravel the journey of solar energy from the vast expanse of space to the surfaces of our oceans, lakes, and rivers, and understand its profound influence on the life within. For you, as future professionals in fisheries and aquaculture, grasping the concept of insolation is paramount. The amount of solar radiation reaching a water body dictates its surface temperature, influences the rate of photosynthesis by aquatic plants and algae (the base of many aquatic food webs), affects water stratification, and even plays a role in phenomena like ice formation and melting. Think about it: the warmth of a lake on a sunny day, the intensity of light penetrating the surface waters, the seasonal changes in algal blooms – all are directly linked to the amount and intensity of solar radiation received. Understanding insolation allows us to begin to explain why some aquatic environments are more productive than others, why water temperatures vary geographically and seasonally, and how changes in solar energy input (whether natural or human-induced) can ripple through entire aquatic ecosystems.

Inability to go to sleep or to get sleep for a period insufficient for the needs of an individual is known as insomnia. Chronic inability to sleep.

None of us can do without sleep. An infant sleeps 14 to 18 hours a day. This period is slowly reduced. An adult may be happy with 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. There are people who require 5 hours or even 4 hours of sleep in 24 hours.

Sleep has a definite purpose and that is why all mammals sleep. Lack of sleep apparently does not cause any physical harm. But anyone who gets less than his normal sleep experiences a decrease of efficiency and concentration.

Since meteorology and climatology are primarily observational sciences, adequate care has to be taken for getting most representative and accurate observations of weather parameters for their efficient application. This depends on site of observatory, maintenance of observatory, accuracy of instruments, timely measurements of weather parameters, knowledge and responsibility of the observer.

Monitoring of weather conditions, in a country like India, which is climatologically so diverse because of its unique geographical situation is a challenging task. It is done through a large network of observatories of different types. India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, is entrusted with the collection and keeping the record of weather data collected from different stations and also to train the man power in this specialized area. Weather stations installed in different parts of the country are of different types.

About the Lower Bhavani Project

The Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) is located in Tamil Nadu in Bhavani River, irrigates 83980 ha in two seasons in a year. The canal water supply is provided for one wet crop from August to December (41885 ha) and one dry crop from January to April (41885 ha). The cultivated area under LBP in Erode and Coimbatore districts are irrigated lands with canals and groundwater, and rainfed crop lands (with supplemental groundwater irrigation).

1. Introduction

Each day, millions of people take a small bag, drop it into a cup, pour in boiling water, and add a dash of milk plus a spoonful of sugar. People start the day with it, end the day with it, and also serve it socially or in times of distress (Herath and De Silva, 2011). The reason behind its popularity is based on the fact that the combination of theanine amino acid contained in tea and melatonin and B-complex vitamins contained in milk offers superior relaxing effects. Furthermore, the harmony of tea’s sweet aroma and milk’s natural sweetness will create a healthy low calorie drink.

Tea is one of the most pleasant drinks consumed by two third of the world’s population. It is not only the most popular and one of the oldest known beverages in the world but also an antioxidative agent available in everyday life which may help to prevent a wide variety of diseases such as cancers and heart diseases (Yang and Landau, 2000; Luczaj and Skrzydlewska, 2005). Tea provides a significant source of phenolic compounds in the diet. While polyphenols have long been of interest for their contribution to the astringenttaste of teas (Ding et al., 1992), research into the health benefits of tea has been actively pursued only in more recent times (Dufresne and Farnworth, 2001; Yamamoto et al., 1997). Even though the results are mixed for the relationship between tea and health in epidemiological and clinical studies, in vitro studies point to a range of mechanisms by which tea phenolics may help to offset chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases (Kris-Etherton and Keen, 2002).

On 17 October we visited the Institute of Marine Science, Burapha University (BIMS), THAILAND at 9 a.m. The institute is situated in Bangsean. BIMS is a marine research institute of Burapha University. They have 6 organizations: Marine Research Department, Marine Aquarium Department, Marine Museum Department, Academic Service Department, Office of the Director and Research Station.

They have shown us their Life Support System of Public Aquarium and coral propagation and conservation.

1) Public aquarium

We have seen the Life Support System of Public Aquarium i.e. Filtration System, which involves the complex systems and technologies used to maintain the health and well-being of marine life in public aquariums. This is crucial for keeping the animals and ecosystems on display healthy and sustainable. The display tank has having 10,00,000-liter capacity.

The emphasis on greater participation of the beneficiaries in the development pro- cess on general and in message development process on general and in message development on particular has led to a reorientation on the study and operation- alization of the role of communication in development activities. There is a shift from the concept of development communication (DC) with its emphasis on top- down, big-media centered government to people communication to development support communication (DSC) focused on co-equal, little-media centered govern- ment with people communication.

A concomitant development is the emergence of a development professionals : the development support communicator, who mediates between the technical experts and their beneficiaries. This person is required to help the beneficiaries interact with the technical personnel, administrators, etc. as co-equal partners. Thus, the new horizontal axes provided by development support communicator will counter- balance the vertical axes of development communication involving the technical change agents.

The Government of India has established a comprehensive institutional framework to promote natural farming through various schemes and initiatives that provide financial support, technical assistance, and policy backing to farmers transitioning from conventional to sustainable agricultural practices. These government interventions represent a strategic shift toward recognizing natural farming as a viable solution to address environmental degradation, input cost escalation, and farmer distress while enhancing agricultural sustainability and food security. The National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) represents the flagship government initiative specifically designed to promote chemical-free and climate-smart agriculture across the country. The Union Cabinet approved the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) on 25th November 2024 as a standalone Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, with a target to initiate one crore farmers into natural farming over the next two years. The mission builds upon the earlier Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP)

Institutes like schools, colleges, universities, R&D laboratories besides hospitals, offices, hotels, banks, courts etc. come under this group. It is recommended that these institutions should develop ornamental gardens and greeneries in order to create ambience and producing aesthetic effects. Lawn, flower beds, creepers, shrubbery borders, trees should be planted as a part of beautification programme.

Purpose

Garden attached to these institutions serves various purposes. The main purpose is aesthetic improvement of these campuses by way of planting various ornamental plants in a planned manner which provides scope for relaxation. Educational institutions may develop small gardens for botanical collection which are related with the course curriculum so that these collections complement educational courses. In that case, representative collections of different families are to be planted as per requirement of the course.

1. Introduction

Higher educational institutions especially the agricultural universities and institutes have multifaceted mandate which includes teaching, research and extension. Scientific information is generated at rapid pace in the form of research papers, project reports, conference/Seminar proceedings, Theses/ Dissertations, books and so on. It is necessary to manage, preserve and share the intellectual output to the academic community for innovations and betterment of the society. Technological developments, open access and open archive movements have facilitated easy access to information. Open access literature available in public domain removes access as well as price barriers. Realizing the importance of preserving valuable digital and print material of an institution idea of developing institutional repositories was invigorated. It is online digital content free of cost and mostly free from restrictions of copyright and licensing. In other words, it is royalty free literature which can be applied to any digital content that are born digital or the older works digitized later in life. Researchers are not well aware of the various channels to enhance the visibility of their work such as scholarly journals and conferences. Further they don’t identify existing library provisions that could help them to share their work on different platforms due to lack of awareness about it. So there is need to create awareness among masses about the institutional repositories and its role in disseminating scientific output of an institution. Institutional repositories are the need of hour for to showcase the research output of an institution.

1. INTRODUCTION

With the rapid development of Information Communication Technology (ICT), many new services have been introduced in libraries to satisfy the need of users in a better way. Institutional Repository is a type of information service which involves collection, organization, preservation and dissemination of digital scholarly materials such as theses, dissertations, technical reports, journal articles and teaching materials. It is created and maintained by an individual library/ organization or a group of libraries/organizations with an aim to preserve the institutional knowledge .Thus basically it is an online locus for collecting, preserving and disseminating the intellectual output of an academic or research institution in digital form, created and maintained by the institution itself.

“Clifford Lynch defines “ a university based Institutional Repositories as a set of services that a university offers to the members of its community for the management and dissemination of digital materials created by the institution and its community members. It is most essentially an organizational commitment to the stewardship of these digital materials, including long-term preservation where appropriate, as well as organization and access or distribution” ¹

Similarly Mark defines IR as “An institutional repository (IR) is defined to be a web-based database (repository) of scholarly material which is institutionally defined (as opposed to a subject-based repository); cumulative and perpetual (a collection of record); open and interoperable (e.g. using OAI-compliant software); and thus collects, stores and disseminates (is part of the process of scholarly communication). In addition, most would include long-term preservation of digital materials as a key function of IRs”²

EMERGENCE OF ALLAHABAD AS A LITERARY CENTER

The period between 1865 to 1936 can be called the ‘literary ’ period of Allahabad (Refer table10.a.). The press was powerful and there were a number of national dailies which came out from the city. Hindi Sahitya Sammelan established in 1911and Prayag Sangeet Samiti in 1925 were the biggest achievements of Allahabad, these institutes were of national repute and strengthened the cultural bearings of the city. A total of 82 libraries functioned during this period, Allahabad was also known as the ‘intellectual’ capital of the country.

As a start-up founder or small business owner, the person contributes not only towards oneself but also towards the local community, state, region, and country. In India, several institutions are working towards women’s empowerment and gender equality. The Ministry of Women and Child Development is the nodal agency responsible for promoting women’s rights and empowerment. The National Commission for Women (NCW) is another statutory body that works to protect and promote women’s rights. Additionally, there are various autonomous organizations such as the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), and the Women’s Technology Park (WTP) that provide training and support to women entrepreneurs. Furthermore, there are numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), the All India Women’s Conference (AIWC), and the YWCA of India that work towards women’s empowerment and gender equality. These institutions provide a range of services including education, healthcare, legal aid, and economic empowerment programs to support women’s development and well-being.

Instrumentation and Advanced Analytical Techniques

    1.    Chromatography is defined as an analytical technique where by a mixture of chemicals may be separated by virtue of their differential affinities for two immiscible phases. One of these, the stationary phase, consists of a fixed bed of small particles with a large surface area, while the other, the mobile phase or “eluant”, is a fluid that moves constantly through, or over the surface of, the fixed phase.

    2.    The chromatogram evaluated qualitatively by determining the Rf or retention factor, for each of the eluted substances.

    3.    The Rf is a measure of that fraction of its total elution time that any compound spends in the mobile phase.

    4.    If the liquid phase is a polar substance (e.g. polyethylene glycol) and the mobile phase is non polar, the process is termed normal-phase chromatography

    5.    When the stationary phase is non polar (e.g. octadecylsilane) and the mobile phase is polar, the process is reversed-phase chromatography

    6.    The chromatographic separation of mixtures of large molecules such as proteins may be accomplished by a mechanism called size exclusion chromatography or gel permeation chromatography.

    7.    Separation of certain molecules is accomplished by a mechanism called affinity Chromatography in which specific binding between an antibody (stationary phase) and antigen (analyte) occur.

Measurement also forms a basic element of any control process. The measurement of discrepancy between the actual and desired performance of a system is central to any control process. Electronic instrumentation provides the solution to many and varied problems of measurement and control. It is often required to change or transduce a measurand into a corresponding electrical signal. The elements which changes/converts the physical variable in electrical signal are termed as sensors or transducers. For a measurement to be useful it must be reliable. That is where question of accuracy or uncertainty of a measurement arises. This may be dealt with clear understanding of measurand and measurement system.

Although Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC) is widely used technique for pesticide residue analysis, it has some limitations. It can analyze of volatile and thermo stable type of pesticides only because it operate at high temperature. These problems have overcome in HPLC. Although HPLC can analyze both polar as well as non-polar type of compounds but it has less sensitivity than GLC.

Chromatography is a physical method of separation in which components to be separated is distributed between two phases, one of which is stationary while other moves in a definite direction. By separating the sample into individual components, it is easier to identify (qualitative) and measure the amount (quantitative) of the various sample components. There are numerous chromatographic techniques and corresponding instruments.

Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC) is the most widely used analytical technique for estimation of volatile and thermo stable type of pesticides with speed, accuracy, reproducibility and sensitivity.

The basic equipment for performing laparoscopy includes the laparoscope and corresponding trocar and cannula, light source, gas insufflator and the Veress needle. Laparoscope applicable for use in the small animals (dog, goat, sheep and lab animals) ranges in diameter from 2.7 to 10 mm in diameter, however, a 5mm diameter telescope is suitable for most cases and 2.7mm may be required for toy breeds of dogs and lab animals. A 0 or 30 degree direction of vision provides the operator with a “normal’ field of view and has proven most useful. Authors are using a 5-mm diameter 30-degree field of view telescope for routine diagnostic laparoscopy. The 5-mm diameter is adequate for most all small animal procedures in animals of variable size. The 0-degree designation means that the telescope views the visual field directly in front of the telescope.

Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) and Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) were initiated by the government to guarantee funds to SC/STs both at State and Centre in pro portion to the size of their respective population. It was in 1974-75 in the Fifth Five Year Plan period that the Government of India introduced the policy of the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) and later in 1979-80 in the Sixth Five Year Plan period the Special Component plan (SCP) which was renamed as Scheduled Caste Sub Plan in April, 2006 and renamed as Allocation for the Welfare of Scheduled Caste (AWSC) in February, 2017.Specifically, the SCSP and TSP mandated that pub lic resources towards SC/ ST welfare must be earmarked in proportion to their share in total population.The Narendra Jadhav Committee was constituted by the Planning Commission in 2010 in this regard.Every year, the Union Budget makes allocations exclusively for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe.This fund is spent through the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) and the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP).As per the recommendations of the committee the earmarking of funds for all Central Ministries/Departments taken together should be at least 16.2% and 8.2% of the total Plan outlay respectivel under the SCSP and the TSP. The aim of such dedicated allocation is to promote nutritional security, livelihood security and entrepreneurship among these communities.

Stride of ICAR-IIVR and Operational Are

Amid nutritional and livelihood security of tribal population ICAR- Indian Insti tute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR), Varanasi has adopted 2724 tribal house holds from 24 villages of six clusters namely Faripan, Manvasa, Bakuliya, Chet wa, Jugail, Dahakudandi of Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh and one cluster from Ranchi, Jharkhand for implementation of TSP programme of the institute. Similarly 2566 Scheduled Caste (SC) households have been adopted from 33 vil lages of five different clusters of Varanasi, Mirzapur and Chandauli districts for implementing SCSP programme.

Agriculture has been very successful in addressing the food and fiber needs of today’s world population. However, there are increasing concerns about the economic, environmental and social costs of this success. Integrated agricultural systems may provide a means to address these concerns while increasing sustainability. Integrated agricultural systems have multiple enterprises that interact in space and time, resulting in a synergistic resource transfer among enterprises. In an integrated agricultural system, management decisions, such as type and amount of commodities to produce, are predetermined. Full integration of agricultural systems at the producer or community scale may help in slowing or reversing some of the detrimental environmental and economic problems associated with specialized industrial agriculture. Modern agriculture requires intensive inputs.

Introduction

• Successful horticultural production is not possible without sufficient moisture regimes and for that, the appropriate techniques should be adopted.

• In the total cultivated land of India, 75 % of land contributed as a rainfed area or dry land area in which 60% with semi-arid and 19.3 % of area with arid zone.

• The irrigation facilities are covered only 38 % of the total cultivated land of the country.

• The moisture is always the limiting factor in arid area.

• So, conservation of soil moisture or water management is the most important task for arid fruit production.

• Out of total cultivated area of Horticultural production, l lakh ha is under arid or semi-arid.

• In arid area, some fruit crops with specials features are adapted for their production. So, in this area, the soil moisture conservation or the water harvesting techniques is the prime important tools for crop production with best management systems.

Abstract

In the present study an integrated remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) based methodology is adopted for demarcating the groundwater prospective zones and identification of artificial recharge sites in the Peddavanka watershed, Andhra Pradesh. In this study Shuttle Radar Topograhic Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) with spatial resolution of 90 m and Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS-1A), Linear Imaging Self Scanner (LISS- III) satellite data along with other field and collateral data on geology and well inventory have been utilized to generating the Drainage, Slope, Lineaments and Hydro geomorphology of the study area, which are an essential prerequisites for demarcating water resources and identification of recharge sites. Spatial data integration and analyses are carried out in GIS environment.

1.0 Introduction

Groundwater is an important natural resource in arid and semi- arid regions, because most of the places surface water resources are scarce and some places it’s totally absent particularly in hard rock areas. Because in hard rock terrains availability of groundwater is of limited extent and its occurrence is essentially confined to fractured and weathered zones (Saraf and choudhury 1998, Sankar 2002). In these areas groundwater recharge depends on rainfall only. For understanding rainfall recharge mechanism and groundwater management in the watersheds level, first we have to understand the morphometric parameters in the watershed level.

3.1 Integrated Insect Pests Management

1. Anar butterfly [Deudorix (Virachola) isocrates Fabricus]

Pomegranate fruit borer or pomegranate butterfly is the most widespread, polyphagous and destructive pest distributed all over India and common in Asia. Peak incidence is during the month of August in monsoon season, while it is more during November/December in winter crop. Infestation from flowering to button stage causing loss up to 50 per cent of the fruit. Adult bluish brown butterfly, female with V shaped patch on forewing. Full-grown larvae are dark brown with short hair and white patches all over the body and measures about 16 to 20mm long. The larvae bore into the pomegranate fruits soon after hatching. Once inside the fruit, larvae (approx 2cm length) feed on the flesh and seeds.  The bored hole is plugged by the last abdominal segment of the larva. When fully grown, the larva comes out by boring through the hard shell and spins a web, which ties the fruit, stalk to the main branch. Offensive smell and excreta of caterpillars coming out of the entry holes with excreta stuck around the holes. The fruits rot and drop off. The holes ultimately expose the rest of the fruit to disease, and typically rot off the tree.

Integrated disease management includes use of physical, cultural, biological, chemical and biotechnological for disease management. It may comprise computer aided sampling, decision making, improved farm tools & equipment.Farmers are the primary decision makers in Integrated disease management programs. They have to decide individually and collectively how to manage all diseases that may harm crops.

With some important exceptions, applied plant pathology was for many years rather single minded. It aimed at eradication or total exclusion of a plant disease , and it relied largely on a single control method, application of chemical poisons.

Integrated Disease Management (IDM) is an approach to controlling plant diseases that combines multiple management strategies to minimize the risk of disease development and spread. IDM integrates biological, chemical, cultural, and physical control methods in a coordinated and complementary way. The primary goal of IDM is to keep disease levels below economically damaging thresholds while reducing reliance on chemical inputs, preserving environmental quality, and promoting sustainability in agricultural systems.

Introduction

Arid Horticulture denotes cultivation of fruits and vegetables under dry and arid regions. Arid region in India is stretched over 39.54 million ha (31.71 million ha is under hot arid region and 7.38 million ha under cold arid region) comprising about 12.02% of the total area of the country. Most of the precipitation in north-western arid region takes place from July to September. Occasional frost has also been a grave issue for horticultural crops, especially, aonla and moringa (Dhandar and Saroj, 2004). The region is exemplified by low and erratic rainfall with extremes of temperature (1–48°C), high wind velocity and sandy soils (Bhandari et al. 2014). Growing of annual crops restricted only a particular season of the year is the merely source of livelihood for the inhabitant of these region. These crops often encounter abiotic stresses like drought, hot and desiccating winds during their growth period leading to poor productivity. These regions have tremendous potential for cultivation of perennial fruit trees.

The routine application of fungicides for insurance purposes is not appropriate, as it does not focus the proper attention on the real problem and can lead to resistance and potential environmental issues. Fungal, bacterial, viral diseases cause a great damage to the horticultural crops thus resulting in economic losses to the farmers. The extent of damage varies from year to year, location wise and variety involved. The pathogens responsible for causing diseases affect the crop at various stages of their development right from seedling stage to harvest. The manifestation of a disease can be in the form of different symptoms viz., damping off, leaf spot, blight, wilt, etc. It is thus important to properly identify a particular disease in a crop on knowledgeable basis to reach a particular end of profitability. As such, a proper disease diagnosis is of paramount importance.

Integrated Disease Management (IDM) in horticultural crops is a multifaceted approach aimed at mitigating the impact of plant diseases while ensuring sustainable production systems. Continued research, education, and collaboration among stakeholders are essential for advancing IDM practices and ensuring their effective implementation in horticultural production systems.
