In Indian Agriculture pulses play an important role in maintaining soil fertility and supplying protein to the vegetarian population of the country. The global importance of cereal crops to the human diet and moreover to the written history of man and agriculture cannot be overstated. Cereal grains are the fruit of plants belonging to the grass family (Gramineae) most important group of food crops produced in the world. Nutritionally, they are important sources of dietary protein, carbohydrates, complex vitamin B, vitamin E, iron, trace of minerals, and fiber. It has been estimated that global cereal consumption directly provides about 50 per cent of protein and energy necessary for the human diet. Some cereals, notably wheat, contain proteins that form gluten, which is essential for making bread. Major cereal crops produced worldwide include wheat, rice and maize. Wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, and millet are produced in large quantities in India.

Integrated Disease Management

Disease control is, managing the plant disease severity below the economic threshold following economically viable, eco-friendly and easily operational procedures. The position of IDM in the overall agricultural system indicates clearly that it is an important sub-system and interacts with other such systems that fall under the cropping system.

Introduction

Fruits, oldest forms of food known to man, are not only good source of nutrition to the body but also have medicinal property and treat ailments. Fruits like apple, lemon, orange and pomegranate aid in proper functioning of the heart. Nutrients in apple, date and mangoes sharpens memory, prevents exhaustion, hysteria, insomnia and mental tension. All berries are rich in iron, phosphorus and sodium which are essential minerals for blood building and nervous system strengthening. Liver ailments, indigestion and rheumatism can be cured by the use of Lemons. Watermelons are good kidney cleansers. Pineapple, pomegranates help in soothing inflammation of nose, throat, fever and other chronic or bronchial ailments. Grapefruit juice is an effective aid for common cold. Fresh and ripe fruits like grapes, apples, bananas and figs are good for all brain deficiencies. Even the kernel of walnut is a helpful remedy for weakness of the brain.

The over emphasis on the use of chemical pesticides and their improper use by the farmers has led to several complications such as residue in food, feed, fodder, development of resistance, resurgence, secondary outbreak, etc. and above all, environmental pollution, leading to a condition known as Pesticide Treadmill characterized by the need to spray ever greater quantities of chemical pesticides. In 1962, Rachel Carson in her book ‘Silent Spring’ aroused worldwide concern about the excessive use of pesticides, which eventually led to the concept of Integrated Pest/Disease Management as an environmentally sound alternative to the sole use of chemicals.

The IDM Concept

In disease management, all the alternate control measures like cultural, biological, mechanical, resistant varieties, physical etc, are utilized in anintegrated manner in order to maintain the disease below economic injury level. If the disease increases and reaches the economic threshold level, pesticides are used to bring the disease down. This is concept of an Integrated Disease Management in which minimum pesticides are used keeping in view of agro- ecosystem. Actually, we do not go for 100 percent control in disease management rather the disease is allowed below which can be tolerated i.e economic threshold. This also provides opportunity for bioagent to survive, managing upon the diseases keeping them at certain equilibrium level. Thus, the Integrated Disease Management concept aims at managing the disease through all the available tactics with favorable economic, social and ecological consequences.

Definitions

This has caused a condition known as Pesticide Treadmill, which is characterized by the need to apply ever-increasing amounts of chemical pesticides. Integrated Pest/Management was developed as an environmentally sound substitute for the exclusive use of chemicals after Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” in 1962 sparked widespread concern about the overuse of pesticides.

Introduction

India enjoys variable climatic conditions and multiplicity of topographic feature, elevation and rainfall. 2.1 Introduction

Energy is one of the main input for rural development and economic development. The greater part of the world population lives at low standard and a quarter of the population or about 1.5 billion, have an extremely low standard of life. Energy is one of the essential requirement of the quality of life the people. The industrial development or even large scale food production, water supply, textile manufactures & construction of building and other recreation items are not possible without adequate supply of energy. Therefore, one of the most important tasks is to provide adequate, reliable, convenient and efficient supply of energy, if quality of life of the people is to be raised from its present level of grinding poverty. Table 2.1 project the global primary energy supply in six scenarios i.e A1 - its strong emphasis on oil and natural gas use. A2 - which is coal-intensive. A3 - which emphasises the roles of natural gas, new renewables and nuclear in averting serious problems from emissions. B - Middle course. C1- with its emphasis on energy efficiency improvements, new renewables (especially solar in the longer run), but with nuclear power phased out by 2100 because unable to satisfy its critics and C2 - where nuclear power plays an expanding role.

Introduction

The total geographical area for farming is 328.7 million hectares whereas, only 139.4 million hectares are a net sown area in India (NHB). India is known as an agricultural powerhouse where small and marginal farmers are at the centre of the Indian rural economy. States like Punjab and Haryana have 80% of the net sown area whereas, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Manipur have only 10% of the net sown area. With the population increasing every year, innovative farming method should be used to feed the large population, utilising vertical space to make the most limited space and time.

Introduction

The term “Integrated Farming System (IFS)” (or simply “integrated farming”) is a term used frequently and generically to describe a method of farming that is more integrated than monoculture methods. By virtue of the intensification of crops and related industries, an IFS offers the chance to enhance economic yield per unit area per unit time. This is accomplished through the system’s use of several crop rotations. It improves the efficiency of fertilizers and natural resources, improves the recycling of nutrients, and contributes to increased food security. The IFS technique promotes ecological intensification by lowering the amount of anthropogenic inputs while simultaneously enhancing the performance of ecosystem services such as the recycling of nutrients, the creation of soil, and the soil’s fertility. IFSs that are well- managed are seen to be safer than those that are not because they benefit from synergy among businesses, diversification of crops, and ecological stability (Behera et al., 2015). It requires paying attention to the minute details and constantly striving to improve in all facets of agricultural production through well- informed administrative practices. The IFS approach is widely regarded as the most important strategy for enhancing the nutritional status of families and ensuring the viability of their livelihoods. The research strategy that is centered on crops and cropping systems needs to give way to the research strategy that is based on agricultural systems, especially for smaller farms (Jha et al., 2011). Recycling of waste and increased effectiveness in terms of land utilization are two essential components of the IFS. The components and enterprises that make up the IFS might differ from region to region. This is because agroclimatic conditions, such as the kind of land, the availability of water, the socioeconomic standing of farmers, and market demand, all play a role. For effective holistic agricultural systems to be constructed, there must be strong connections and complementarities between the various components (Bell et al., 2014). Integrating land- based businesses into the biophysical and socio- economic contexts of farmers, such as aquaculture, poultry, duckeries, apiaries, as well as field and horticultural crops, is essential in the IFS to make farming highly profitable and reliable (Behera et al.,2004: Kashyap et al., 2015). Farmers who are limited in their access to resources can achieve sustainable output through the careful administration of agricultural residues and the distribution of limited resources

The most significant achievement in India after independence is the self-reliance in food grain production. The use of high yielding varieties, irrigation facilities, higher application of fertilizers & pesticides contributed to sufficient food grain production in the mid 60’s & 70’s of the last century. Later on development in other enterprises like dairy, poultry, piggery, fishery, sericulture etc., took place in an isolated manner. However, the productivity of these high yielding varieties and hybrids became stagnant during last decade and with limited scope for increasing the cultivable land, the country’s food security is likely to be threatened in the near future. According to a recent estimate the food grain requirement of India would be 380 and 450 million tons in the years 2025 & 2050 respectively with the present rate of population growth. On the other hand, despite significant breakthrough in food production the living standards of farmers are far from satisfaction; this situation is matter of great concern for the country. The farmers are losing confidence in farming due to declining returns; hence majority of them prefers to shift to non-agricultural vocations. If this trend continues in future, the potential to satisfy future food needs will be seriously compromised. Agriculture continues to be the pivotal sector in the Indian economy providing employment to 69 per cent of the population.

The coastal zone of Karnataka is marked by highly fragmented agriculture land with more than 70 per cent of the land holders belonging to small and marginal farmer categories. Though the average annual rainfall received in the zone is 4000mm, the kharif season crops suffer from submergence and lodging.  The rabi/summer crops fail due to low soil residual moisture because of high percolation loss and poor water holding capacity of soils. Thus, the returns from the land is very less resulting in migration of youngsters mainly to the Arab countries as well as the neighbouring states in search of a job. In this situation, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore through Extension Education Unit, Mangalore has demonstrated the Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts to show that the IFS is profitable, sustainable and can secure the livelihood. The demonstrations were taken up in each farmer’sfield continuously for three consecutive years.

To analyze the impact of these demonstrations, case studies of three IFS demonstrated farmers were done during 2007 with the objective of documenting the farming systems demonstrated and the current farming systems practiced by the farmers; to analyze the income and employment generated and their impact on their socio-economic status. The yearwise documentation of the subsystems of the farming systems practiced by each farmer and the net income, percent increase of income over benchmark year, employment generation, cropping intensity, B:C ratio were analyzed. The results of the case studies are presented below.

Possible Integrations:

Agriculture is not only the main source of employment, income and food for over 70% of the population but also the main culture of the rural families. But the linear growth in population and unplanned colonization lead to rapid fragmentation of land holdings and shrinkage in fertile cultivated land. In India, more than 70% of the total population of the country still live in villages and mainly depend on agriculture and/or related enterprises. Marginal and small farmers constitute more than 84% of the 115 million operational holdings in India which are cultivating only 29% of the arable land (Singh et al., 2011). 

Abstract

The green revolution concentrated only on a single enterprise, the crop.  Later on, developments in other enterprises like dairy, poultry, piggery, fishery, etc took place, however in an isolated manner.  Now it is essential to diversify the economic activities in an interdependent and integrated manner at micro level within the available resources. The system thus developed will be termed as integrated farming system approach.  This helps in generating sustained, stable farm income and higher employment. To achieve these objectives, several extension programmers were designed and conducted in integrated farming system demonstration undertaken by the Extension Education Unit of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore in close association with other subject matter specialists. The programmes were implemented in selected taluks of Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka. One such case study is presented here.

India is predominately a agriculture based country, wherein 85 per cent of the land holding are small and marginal. The per capita availability of land has been decreased from 0.5 ha in 1950-51 to 0.15 ha by the turn of the century and a projected future decline to less than 0.1 ha by 2020. This decline in trend in size of land holding poses a serious challenge to sustainability and profitability of the farming. The population is steadily growing without any possibility of increase in land area. The income from cropenterprise for an a average farmer is hardly sufficient to sustain his family. But the farmer has assured of a regular income for a reasonable standard of living by including other enterprises. The integrated farming system (IFS) seems to be the solution to continue to increase the demand for food production, stability of income and improvement of nutritional status of family members.
 
Agriculture in this millennium, due to emerging production scenario, higher economic growth, population explosion and shifts in dietary pattern has changed the supply and demand profiles of food respectively. Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) seems to be the possible solution to meet the continuous increase in demand for food, stability of income and diverse requirements of food grains, vegetables, milk, egg, meat etc., thereby improving the nutrition of the small-scale farmers with limited resources.

Abstract

Agriculture is at a cross-road in J&K wherein the small holdings, profitability, livelihood security and sustainability issues are the factors adding to the existing agrarian crisis in the state in particular and the country in general. This requires a decisive direction shift at the policy level towards adoption of integrated farming system. There is a need of fundamental change from the unilateral, top-down, prescriptive “knowledge generation and transmission” models of agriculture development adopted in the country so far, which have in fact resulted in an ecological, economic and social crisis in the farming sector of the state during 40 years of adoption and that climate change is one more imperative for drastic change to address the situation. Climate change is already a reality for farming community and that conventional models of agricultural research and extension have failed to address the need of the hour unless some fundamental recasting in the form of diversified farming system is adopted. The immediate need for interventional action precludes traditional models of research and support systems and requires alternative but urgent programmatic interventions, led by farmers’ institutions and their local resources, knowledge and innovations. Existing mainstream models of farming are GHG-inducing and are not conducive to adoption either given their high external-input dependency-models which increases the risk of vulnerable farmers. Integrated farming system a key to sustainable agriculture, on the other hand, holds immense mitigation and adaptation potential, specifically in the context of climate change even as it improves rural livelihoods and addresses the ecological crisis in farming of today under various climatic regions of Jammu in particular and state in general. Jammu region of the J&K state is bestowed with varying climate zones i.e. subtropical, intermediate and temperate zones, which is best suited for diversified farming,as the promotion of single enterprise is neither beneficial from economy point of view nor is sustainable under the given climate change crisis. The integration of Crops, Horticulture, Animal ,Fish cum Poultry, Mushroom, Vermicompost, Apairy, Biogas and Boundary plantation enterprises in Jammu region under integrating farming system is having the potential to improve the farm income to three folds besides will address the sustainability issues in the long run.

Integrated Farming System is a traditional concept in agriculture in which we are trying integrate various agriculture farming and its allied enterprises suitably for efficient use of single and multiple production function. In simple sense, it is a way integrating crop farming with livestock and poultry farming, fish farming, bee keeping and other agriculture technologies to enhance the value chain of farming system.

The integrated farming systems, therefore, assume prime place for sound management of farm resources to enhance the farm productivity, reduce the environmental degradation, and improve the quality of life of resource poor farmers and to maintain the sustainability to meet the challenges of food security. In order to meet the soaring demand for food there is a need to go for integrated faming system.This approach facilitates in strengthening the socio-economic status of Indian farmers besides strengthening ecological balance. Integrated farming system is common to Indian farmers simply because of the preponderance of small farm systems which form the backbone of traditional agriculture. For small farmers, these systems enable a means of diversifying the use of meagre resources in the context of a rational means of reducing risk. Additionally, it also enables increased efficiency in the use of these same resources in a manner that there will be livelihood security and stability to farming systems. There is no scope for increasing the farm size. Yet steady increase in population with shrinkage of cultivated land as a result of industrialization and urbanization would pose serious hurdle for agricultural development. Only vertical expansion is possible by integrating appropriate farming components requiring lesser space and time ensuring continuous income to the farmers.

Linear programming (LP) is a modeling tool that can assist in the solution of many problems in agriculture. It is useful in selecting the best alternative from a number of available course of actions.

LP models are designed to “optimize” a specific objective criterion subject to a set of constraints. The quality of the resulting solution depends on the completeness of the model in representing the real system.

What is a system?

A group of interacting components, operating together for a common purpose, capable of reacting as a whole to external stimuli is called a system. It is not affected directly by its own outputs, having a specified boundary based on inclusion of all significant feedbacks. Human body is a system with a boundary (e.g., the skin) enclosing a number of components (heart, lungs) that interact (the heart pumps blood to the lungs) for a common purpose (to maintain and operate the living body). Collection of unrelated items does not constitute a system. A bag of pebbles is not a system because with addition or removal of a pebble, a bag of pebbles remains and is almost not affected completely by that change. Pebbles behave as a whole if the whole bag is influenced, for example by dropping it; the constituent parts go their own ways with its bursting. The vulnerability of agriculture to climate change has become an important issue resulting in reduced productivity due to adverse climatic changes. The overall purpose is to assess farming systems change to enable adaptation to climate change. It deals with the predicted climate change scenarios and the adaptations necessary to reduce climate change impacts and examines improvement of indigenous breeds for adaptation to climate change. It also explores the use of crop modeling as avenues to address adaptations of crop production systems and draws the recommendations to outlines of future research needs.

Although the adverse effects of climate change are likely to be borne disproportionately by the small farmers of the developing world, it is the integrated farming systems with their high degree of biodiversity which are best equipped to withstand the shocks of climatic extremes. Apart from the landless and urban poor, small farmers are among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups in the developing world. It is obvious that climate-related environmental stresses are likely to affect individual households differently compared to more market-oriented farmers. The climate change reduces crop yields. The effects on the welfare of subsistence farming families may be quite severe, especially if the subsistence component of productivity is reduced. Changes in quality and quantity of production may affect the labour productivity of the farmer and negatively influence his/her family health(Rosenzweig and Hillel 1998).

Introduction

Agriculture is a dynamic sector affected by rapid changes in environment and climate, technologies, development priorities, impact of changes in other sectors and social changes such as family structure, migration and international policies such as globalization and liberation. The Indian Green Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, with its package of improved seeds, farm technology, better irrigation and chemical fertilizers, was highly successful in meeting its primary objective of increasing crop yields and augmenting food supply. However, the Green Revolution as a development approach has not necessarily translated into benefits for the lower socioeconomic strata, particularly the rural poor and farm women, in terms of greater food security or greater economic opportunity. It has increased the need for cash incomes in rural households to cover the costs of technological inputs which has forced women to work as agricultural laborers and increased the need for unpaid female labor for farming tasks.

In the era of burgeoning population and shrinking natural resources integrated farming system may be the panacea. Integrated Farming system approach envisages the integration of agroforestry, horticulture, dairy, sheep and goat rearing, fishery, poultry, pigeon, biogas, mushroom, sericulture and by-product utilization of crops with the main goal of increasing the income and standard of living of small and marginal farmers. Integrated systems are about bringing crops and livestock into an interactive relationship with the expectation that together, as opposed to alone, they will generate positive effects on outcomes of interest, such as profitability overall productivity and conservation of nonrenewable resources. It is, however, much more than this. The “system” includes the environment, soil characteristics, landscape positions, genetics and ecology of plant and animals. It involves management practices, goals and lifestyles of humans, social constraints, economic opportunities, marketing strategies and externalities including energy supplies and costs and impacts of farm policies. Systems also reflect available natural resources and the impact on their use, wildlife issues, target and non-target plant and animal species, micro-organisms and indeed all of the definable and indefinable factors that ultimately interact to result in an outcome that is never constant. The aims of integrated farming system is to increase productivity, profitability, sustainability, balanced food, clean environment, recycling of available resources and income round the year. Besides we can also think for adoption of new technology, solving energy crises: fuel and fodder crises, avoiding deforestation, increasing employment generation by taking more than one component, input-output efficiency and enhancing opportunity for agriculture oriented industries as well as uplifting living standard of the farmers

Introduction

It is obvious beyond doubt that the climate is changing. Climate has also been changing in the past, but its rate of change has been unprecedented in recent past years. It is true that no one could stop the climate from changing, but could do a lot for mitigating some of its effects and formulate adaptation mechanisms to it. Agriculture, especially the small holder producers have been at the receiving end of the climate change effects, resulting into not only in the fluctuating and unstable productivity, loss of natural resources and consequent livelihoods, but also to their survival.

Climate change and food insecurity are two most pressing challenges human beings are facing today and has emerged as the biggest twin challenge of this century. There are evidences that the increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activities is responsible for global warming and consequent climate change (FAO, 2007). Under the six emissions scenarios the global average surface temperatures are expected to increase by 1.1°C - 6.4°C this century [IPCC, 2007]. Climate change has its impact on almost everything on the earth and so on the food production. The agriculture plays a very important role in the economy of most of the nations of the developing world. For India, agriculture is the base of nation’s economy, largely rainfed and dominated by smallholders (Singh 2008 and 2010). As per reports from a number of governments, non-government and intergovernmental organizations, the countries and agriculture especially practiced by smallholders are particularly vulnerable to climatic changes and they have least capacity to adapt to these changes. In most of the developing countries of the world, the agriculture is not merely a matter of cultural practice but it is the source of livelihoods of millions of smallholders and their dependents. Changing climate as predicted will not only affect the agricultural productivity but also heavily hit the lives and livelihoods of the smallholder families and ultimately lead to food insecurity to the concerned nation and the world (Singh et al. 2012). Business-as-usual scenarios of population growth and food consumption patterns indicate that agricultural production will need to increase by 70 percent by 2050 to meet global demand for food. South-Asian countries made tremendous progress in food production in 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. with an impressive growth of food production, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal transformed themselves from countries with a chronic food deficit to countries that were almost self sufficient in early 1990s. Except Afghanistan, all these countries had exported some quantities of food grain in late 1990s. The dynamic growth in the agriculture sector has, however, recently been lost. Productivity of major food grains has slowed and has been decline for some crops (Kumar et al. 2008) with food production failing to keep pace with population growth (G. Rasul and A. Schild 2009). As a result, South-Asian countries are now finding it difficult to meet their population most basic food and nutritional needs and remain vulnerable to food insecurity (Tab.1).

Integrated farming system is a multidisciplinary whole farm approach, which enables the farmers to identify opportunities and threats and act accordingly. It is a dynamic approach which can be applied to any farming system around the world. It is very effective in solving the problems of small and marginal farmers.

The development of software in the sphere of information technology and agriculture currently make up the majority of the economy (Shashank et al., 2006). The majority of people in our country live in rural areas, so efforts to improve the economy must be concentrated there. To make any kind of progress in rural areas, strategies should be developed that will primarily focus on some crucial points, including the sustainable use of natural resources and their conservation, increasing production and profitability by efficiently using the resources already available, and improving quality and productivity by reducing waste.

Integrated fish farming, a sustainable aquaculture practice, combines the cultivation of fish with other complementary activities such as agriculture or livestock farming in a mutually beneficial system. This chapter explores the importance of integrated fish farming as a solution to enhance the income and livelihoods of fish farmers while promoting environmental sustainability (Pauly et al., 2003). By leveraging the synergies between different farming components, integrated fish farming systems can optimize resource utilization, improve productivity, and diversify income streams for farmers. The chapter discusses various integrated fish farming models, including aquaponics, rice-fish culture, and integrated livestock-fish systems, highlighting their potential to increase profitability and resilience in the face of climate change and market uncertainties. Furthermore, the chapter examines the challenges and opportunities associated with integrated fish farming and provides recommendations for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to promote its widespread adoption and long-term success.

Integrated fish farming, when paired with biogas production and vermicomposting, offers an eco-friendly and resource-efficient model. This system combines fish culture with livestock such as pigs or poultry, using animal waste to fertilize fishponds. This reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers and enhances fish growth. Biogas units convert manure into energy while producing a nutrientrich slurry that can serve as fertilizer. Vermicomposting further processes waste into high-quality compost, adding to the sustainability of the system.
USE OF CATTLE/PIG DUNG FOR BIOGAS GENERATION
Dung from cattle and pigs serves as an excellent input for biogas production, which can be seamlessly integrated with fish farming. Utilizing animal waste in this way improves pond fertility, increases fish production, provides clean energy, and reduces environmental strain. In India, cow dung is traditionally used directly in fishponds, yielding 1,500–2,000 kg/ha of fish. However, this output can more than double when the dung is first processed in a biogas plant and the digested slurry is used.
Method for a 0.4 ha Pond
1. Pond Preparation: Prepare the pond in June using the urea-bleaching powder method or through draining and sun-drying.
2. Stocking: Add 2,000 fingerlings (5–8 g each) of six Indian major carps—Catla (20%), Rohu (25%), Mrigal (20%), Silver Carp (20%), Grass Carp (5%), and Common Carp (10%).
3. Fertilization: Apply 30 liters of biogas slurry daily. The slurry, high in nitrogen and phosphorus, is non-toxic, unlike decomposing raw dung. Avoid application on cloudy days or when fish surface for air.

• Fish cum-poultry farming.

A) Fish Cum-poultry farming

Inland fish culture in conjunction with poultry rearing is a compatible business and can provide a readymade fertilizer for fish pond. In a larger sense fish and poultry are mutually complementary the former provides fish meal a protein rich poultry feed and the later is droppings which acts as fertilizers for plankton production to serve as natural proteinous fish feed. Fish meal is recognized as perhaps the choicest poultry feed. In an integrated fish cum-poultry farm, birds have to be housed in deep litter of battery system in which the pen flora is covered with hay. The floor of the pen is covered with chapped straw dry leaves, hay broken up groundnut shells maize straw and saw dust. Each bird should have about 0.3 m² space to live on the deep litter flooring bird droppings falling on the litter react with the flooring organic material. The litter has to be periodically churned for aeration and maintenance of hygienic conditions.

INTRODUCTION

Integrated farming is an innovative approach towards increased fish production. In integrated fish farming two or more commodities are framed together on a common infra-structural base with the objective of optimizing use of available resources. It is based on the concept that “there are no wastes and waste is only a misplaced resource, which can become a valuable material for another product”. There are several advantages of integrated farming system viz. increased productivity, greater income, improved cash flow, fuller employment, a better diet for the farmer’s family and less biological and economic risk (Pillay, 1990). On the other side, there is the disadvantage that the integrated system is more complex, with a need for more knowledge and better management, since the failure of one system could adversely affect other system (Singh et al., 2014). In integrated farming system, animal manure is shed directly into a fish pond as fertilizer and supports the growth of natural fish food organisms. The fish not only utilize spilled animal feed, but also directly feed on fresh animal excreta which is partially digested and is rich in nutrients. Surplus excreta support the rich growth of planktonic fauna. Fertilizers and supplementary feed are not used, resulting in a drastic cost reduction. These farming systems are relatively confined units with little exchange of water. Manure from livestock which indirectly trigger the growth of mainly photosynthetic organisms resulting in the production high yields fish with low input and limit the dependency on supplementary feed (Saikia et al., 2020 and Sharma et al., 1979; 1998). Ugwumba et al. (2010) suggested that the higher the number of viable enterprises integrated into an agricultural system the higher the expected profit. Integrated culture system is quite compatible with the earthen pond culture and relevant to benefit the rural poor (Misra et al, 2016, Vohra et al., 2012).

Homestead is a small scale, supplementary food production system; it has the potential to produce high value crops including various spices condiments by and large for the household members. A typical home garden is an adjunct to the house, where selected trees, shrubs are grown, not only edible fruits / vegetables, but also for medicinal, ornamental, socioeconomic and ecological benefits. Homestead exhibit a multi tired canopy structure somewhat identical to the tropical evergreen forest formations. The vertical stratification provides a gradient in light and relative humidity, which creates different niches for enabling various spices/groups to exploit them .Mostly shade tolerant crops constitute the lower stratum, the shade intolerant trees the layer and spices with varying degree of shade tolerance in the intermediate strata .These multi strata system are structurally and functionally the closest mimics of natural forests yet attained The structural and floristic diversity of tropical home gardens are perhaps aided by the biophysical environment, socio-culture factors and economic consideration. 

Introduction

Rapeseed-mustard is attacked by more than 43 insect species. Out of which, mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach); mustard sawfly, Athalia proxima (Klug); painted bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burnmerister); pea leaf miner, Chromatomyia horticola (Goureau) and Bihar hairy caterpillar, Spilarctia obliqua (Walker) are of major importance. Other pests are of sporadic occurrence. Status of important insect pests attacking rapseed mustard in India have been given in detail by Bakhetia and Arora (1993) and Singh 2005. The occurrence of various insect pests on rapeseed-mustard is stage-specific. This has been a gift provided by nature to help avoid inter-competition among them for their fullest exploitation of the host. The insect pests attacking rapeseed- mustard as given in Table 1 and at various stages of the crop in Table 2.

Several fungal and bacterial pathogens that are airborne settle on the foliar tissues of susceptible host plant species and initiate infection which spreads to other plant parts later. Fungal pathogens cause different types of leaf spots, downy mildews, powdery mildews and rust diseases commonly on various crops. The bacterial pathogens induce blights and rot diseases.

Fungal and bacterial pathogens infecting either directly or causing secondary infection of inflorescence may be responsible for greater losses than the pathogens infecting stems or foliage, if they do not cause the death of plants. The extent of earhead infection by the pathogen(s) is directly correlated to the quantum of yield losses.

Diseases are caused by different kinds of microorganisms which may primarily attack specific plant organs initially. They may be either confined to the organs in which infection is successfully initiated and may spread to other organs to cause secondary infection. The plant organs initially affected may not show characteristic symptoms in certain cases as in root rot and wilt diseases. The root infection is recognized much later, when yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves is observed. It may become very difficult to save the infected plants at this stage, since the pathogen is well established in the deeper tissues of the infected plants. However, the spread of the disease to the adjacent plants may be prevented by protective treatments. Integration of various principles of management of crop diseases has to be followed for successful crop cultivation. The combination of practices that can be applied varies with different types of diseases and the crops affected. Hence, the integrated management of crop diseases is discussed for different groups of diseases affecting primarily different plant organs/ tissues. Fungal and bacterial pathogens remaining in the soil or plant debris left over after harvest of previous crops infect the root system initially and crown or the basal portions of the stem may also be affected later.

Plants have to transport water and nutrients absorbed by the roots from the soil and photosynthetic products from the leaves to other plant parts and storage tissues through the stem tissues. Infection by fungal and bacterial pathogens interferes with the movement of the essential materials leading to the derangement of several physiological functions to varying degrees and even collapse of the aerial plant parts.

16.1 Fungal Pathogens causing Diseases Affecting Stems of Plants

Fungal pathogens cause blight, stem rot, rust, anthracnose, die-back and canker symptoms on the stem tissues of several crops. These pathogens may be soilborne or airborne generally, while some of them may spread through water also.

Pulse crops have a unique position in sustainable crop production as they provide proteinaceous food of high nutritive value and keep the soil alive and productive. India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses in the world which accounts for 32 per cent of global area and 28 per cent of world’s pulse production. But the yield levels of these pulse crops are not satisfactory as it is grown as a neglected crop. Besides, extensive damage caused by insect pests is another major constraint for low yield of pulse crops. On an average annually 2.5 to 3.0 million tonnes of pulses are lost (Rabindra et al., 2004) with a monetary value of nearly Rs.6,000 crores due to ravages of insect pest complex (Reddy, 2009 and Panda et al. 1998). About 250 insects have been recorded feeding on these pulse crops in different parts of India (Narang, 1990) of which maximum damage is caused by the pod borer complex along with some sucking pests and foliage feeders. Sap feeders viz., aphids, whitefly, leaf hopper, thrips ; defoliator viz., leaf roller, hairy caterpillars etc are major threats to the crop during vegetative stage whereas the pod borers and pod sucking bugs are of major concern during reproductive stage. About two dozen insect pests are very important and found occurring on one or the other pulse crop frequently causing variable degrees of damage. A list of the very common insect and mite pests infesting different pulse crops (Table 1) and the extent of loss caused by different insect pests to some important pulse crops documented by the IIPR, Kanpur (Table 2) are furnished below.

Many economically important diseases are caused by Phytophthora spp. There are as many as 60 described Phytophthora species, most of which are primary invaders of plant tissues with limited saprophytic ability. Some important diseases with respect to symptoms, etiology and management have been described in this chapter as given below.

Introduction

The growing interest in agricultural production over the past few decades has resulted in more farming systems that rely on chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers, which has seriously harmed the soil, water, air, and climate while paying little attention to quality or concern for the agricultural system’s negative effects on ecosystems. But as time went on, scientific research began to focus on sustainable agriculture, organic farming, clean agriculture, and other ideas that eventually evolved into agricultural systems that maintain the balance in all areas of the agricultural and production process, as well as consumer and environmental concerns. These agricultural approaches have attracted the attention of numerous farmers, and many large farms are now interested in organic farming in the context of sustainable agriculture. The idea of sustainable agriculture is simply the production of food, fiber, other plant products, or even animal products using agricultural techniques that protect the environment, public health, and human societies from the detrimental effects arising from carrying out that process using the standard format as well as technology that also takes into account animal welfare, such that this type of agriculture will enable us to produce healthy foods without compromise (Bahlai et al., 2010; Muller et al., 2017, and Palmgren et al., 2015).

The Future of Sustainable Agriculture

The adoption of sustainable agriculture was made to raise awareness of their significance and to support the governments of plantations and businesses that operate within the parameters of sustainability, in particular organic agriculture, which is clean and recently devoted a lot of studies and research as well as major scientific conferences on sustainable agriculture, as were a lot of major exhibitions for organic goods and food made from organic ingredients around the world. Specifically, the potential role that organic agriculture could play in reducing the adverse effects of climate change, reducing deforestation rates, maintaining biological risk, and also arranging the steady increase in the world’s population, attracted attention to the level of international policy.

A wide variety of fungal and bacterial pathogens cause postharvest disease in fruits and vegetables. Some of these infect produce before harvest and then remain quiescent until conditions are more favourable for disease development after harvest. Other pathogens infect produce during and after harvest through surface injuries. In the development of strategies for postharvest disease control, it is imperative to take a step back and consider the production and postharvest handling systems in their entirety. Traditionally fungicides have played a central role in postharvest disease control. However, trends towards reduced chemical usage in horticulture are forcing the development of new strategies. Controlling or reducing disease relies on integrated crop and postharvest management, with attention to fungicide application, crop hygiene and nutrition, and the management of ripening, to optimise advantages conferred by the plant’s natural resistance factors that prevent and delay disease development. Agricultural production and food distribution systems have evolved over many years to a complex system which allows for nearly year-round supply of most fresh commodities through longterm storage and long distance shipments to consumers. The expectation of year round supplies has resulted in increased challenges for postharvest handling systems. The availability of fungicides for disease management likely played a major role in the evolution of our current system of food distribution (Mitcham, 1999). With the recent loss of registration of many postharvestfungicides and more expected under the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), as well as consumer pressure to reduce the amount of chemicals used on food, the challenge to maintain our current system of food distribution increases.

Postharvest diseases caused by fungal pathogens are more numerous than those due to bacterial pathogens. Infection by these pathogens may be initiated in the field before harvest, during transit or storage. These pathogens may remain dormant and become active, when the physiological conditions of the produce and environmental conditions become favourable. Symptoms characteristic of the diseases are observed as the produce age or ripen.

INTRODUCTION

Plants are susceptible to different types of pathogens, which are responsible for production of varied symptoms and causing losses. In the absence of the crops pathogens perpetuates in different manners and survival in the soil is one of the most important amongst these. Because of the constant presence of the pathogen in the soil, these become more destructive. These may reduce the plant growth, results in rotting of different plant parts, reduce yield or may cause the death of the plant. The destructiveness of soil borne pathogen increases because of the ability to survive in the soil as dormant structures for several years. Efficient control of soil borne diseases is thus difficult but can be achieved by employing various disease management practices in an integrated manner (Verma and Varma, 1992; Gupta, 1996, Gupta and Sharma, 1999).

Many insets inhabit the soil and participate in different activities which will result in changes in soil physico-chemical properties. Thus soil is a very good habitat for some insects. Several insects spend either complete or few stages of their life cycle in soil. Soil provides protection from predators for many soil dwelling insects especially in immature stages. Few insects also undergo diapauses in soil. Soil insects include phytophagous, scavengers, predators and parasites. Among these, soil macro fauna especially termites and white grubs are very important pests of many crops and their activity also brings many changes in soil ecosystem.

Termites

Termites (Order: Isoptera) are eusocial, polymorphic and live in small to large colonies. The colony consists of different castes viz., functional reproductive (queen and king), sterile workers and soldiers, which are morphologically distinct.  The tasks of the latter two castes include foraging, nest building and care of eggs and young ones and defense. All species maintain symbiotic relationships with microorganisms, which aid in digestion. Few species build the often-spectacular mounds or arboreal nests and others build subterranean nests. They constitute important group of soil fauna and play a major role in the arid and semiarid tropics. Worker castes are dominant and are responsible for major functions in the colony. During the process of food collection, the workers generally attack the plants that are weakened due to some internal growth factors or environmental causes such as drought or poor soil conditions (Roonwal, 1978).

Among the microbial pathogens, viral and phytoplasmal pathogens primarily depend on various vector species for their spread from infected plants to healthy plants in the same or distant locations. Hence, management of these diseases depends on the reduction of vector populations, in addition to the disease management strategies applicable to diseases caused by fungal and bacterial pathogens that are not transmitted by vectors.

19.1 Diseases caused by Viruses

Plant viruses are transmitted through seeds, propagative plant materials and vectors such as mites, insects, nematodes and fungi. Hence, the strategies to manage these diseases vary depending on the nature of vectors involved in the transmission of viruses.
