Soil fertility -importance

From edaphological point of view soil is a medium for plant growth. It holds and nourishes the plants. Soil fertility refers to the ability of soil to supply plant nutrients. Soil fertility and fertilizers are very much closely related terms; and cannot be neglected one from the other in their function. Soil fertility acts as a ‘SINK’ where in plants can draw nutrients for maximum productivity, where as fertilizer, acts as a ‘SOURCE’ wherein we can apply continuously different nutrients. The importance of soil fertility and nutrient management is being increasingly recognized in all countries recently to meet the demand for food and other agricultural raw materials. Intensive use of fertilizer, intensive cropping and high yielding seeds have no doubt increased the food production and reduced the food shortage but it has also ushered in innumerable problems of soil fertility, soil and water pollution. On the other hand, fast depletion of nutrients due to over exploitation, a wide spread deficiency of N, P, K and S coupled with micronutrients deficiencies specially Zn, B and Mo is taking place. Further deforestation, shifting cultivation, burning of crop residues, trees, bushes, grasses and cow dung, soil erosion, nutrient losses and imbalanced nutrient application, leaching losses etc., have aggravated the depletion of soil fertility status. The productivity of Indian agriculture solely depends on scientific management of soil fertility along with judicious and efficient use of fertilizers integrated with organic sources.

Soil represents a medium or substrate in which numerous microorganisms live and bring about a great variety of processes that are responsible for the continuation of the cycle of life in nature. The numerous living forms which spend their life in the soil, ranging from submicroscopic forms to the lower animal forms. With the growing recognition of the numerous processes carried out by the microorganisms in the soil there gradually emerged a branch of microbiology, which came to known as soil microbiology. It is a branch of soil science concerned with soil-inhabiting microorganisms and their functions and activities.

Since soil microbiology concerns soil microorganisms and their processes it is closely associated with soil biochemistry. Medical bacteriologists are interested in the soil as a medium for the growth and survival of disease-producing organisms. Agricultural chemists are also interested in the soil processes that result from the activities of microorganisms. General bacteriologists, zoologists, botanists are interested in a certain special group of organisms found in the soil. Recently, soil microbiology has expanded to include the study of the role of soil microorganisms in genetic engineering, in the biological control of pests and diseases, the degradation of pollutants, production and destruction of radioactive gases and its transfer. Thus microbial participation in several important processes emphasizes that soil microbiology has become a global science.

“SOIL” the term is derived from Latin word “solum” which means, “floor”. Soil has been a defining component of humanity since the beginning of civilization. It holds the clues of past cultures, it supports the web of life connecting all ecosystems, provides materials to build houses, and provides the base for our food, feed, fiber and even some biofuels.

Soils are complex mixtures of minerals, water, air, organic matter, and countless organisms that are the decaying remains of once-living things. It forms at the surface of land and is the “skin of the earth.” Soil is capable of supporting plant life and is vital to life on earth. There are several general roles that soils play:

Spices breeding is the process of developing new and improved varieties of spices through selective breeding, hybridization, and other genetic techniques. The main goals of spices breeding are to enhance desirable traits such as yield, flavour, aroma, disease resistance, and adaptability to different growing conditions. Importance of spice breeding
• Economic value: Spices are economically valuable crops globally. Breeding can lead to higher yields and better quality, improving profitability for farmers.
• Diversity and culinary use: Spices like black pepper, cardamom, turmeric, and chili are used worldwide in various cuisines. Breeding helps to maintain and improve the diversity of these spices.
• Medicinal properties: Many spices have medicinal properties. Breeding can enhance the concentration of beneficial compounds in spices.
Breeding objectives
• Yield improvement: Increasing the quantity of spices produced per plant or per unit area.
• Quality enhancement: Improving the essential oil content, pungency, colour, and other quality traits.
• Disease and pest resistance: Developing varieties that are resistant to common diseases and pests affecting spices.
• Climate adaptation: Creating varieties that can withstand different climatic conditions, such as drought or high humidity.
• Reduced crop duration: Breeding for shorter growth cycles to increase the number of harvests per year.

India is known as the land of spices, while Kerala is often referred to as the spice bowl of the country. Out of the 109 spices acknowledged by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), India cultivates around 63 spices. The Spices Board of India actively encourages the cultivation and trade of 52 spices. This remarkable diversity in spice cultivation is made possible by India’s varied geographical conditions, encompassing all 15 agroclimatic zones, ranging from tropical and subtropical to temperate regions. These diverse conditions enable the cultivation of almost all kinds of spices.
Definition
Spices are defined as “spices are those plants, the plant products of which are made use as food adjuncts to add aroma and flavour”. Spices are also defined as per the Internal Organization for Standardization (ISO) as “Spices are Vegetable products, or mixtures thereof, free from extraneous matter, used for flavouring, seasoning and imparting aroma to foods”.
Condiments are defined as “condiments are also spices, products of which are used as food adjuncts to add taste only.” Mainly used for seasoning purpose. This book is designed to introduce to the students some of the most widely used experimental procedures in biotechnology, including DNA/RNA isolation, manipulation, cloning, protein purification and characterization. The biotechnology laboratory is conducted as a “directed” research project. This means that although the general procedures are well established, the overall goal of each experiment is the acquisition of new information. Because of the nature of scientific research, predicting the outcome of experiments that have not previously been performed is difficult. It may therefore be necessary to design new experiments based on the results of previous ones, or to repeat experiments that yielded uninterruptable or ambiguous results.

1.1 Importance

Perfumes, essential oils and aroma are some of the products which indicate religious values, living standards, personality development for personal use and adornment from years back. The Vedic literatures also indicate the presence of perfumes and aromatics and were used for religious purposes as well as medicinal purposes. The word perfume has been used today to describe scented mixtures and is derived from the Latin word, “per fumum”, meaning through smoke. Perfumery has been one of the Indian arts and was a famous centre for perfume and perfume products. The essential oil means a class of volatile odoriferous oils, obtained from raw material of botanical source that impart the plant odour and other characteristic properties derived through distillation (usually with water or steam) or expression and obtained in the form of an oily liquid. The oils extracted through expression are some time called “Expression oils”. The aromatic substances being used from the Vedic period are defined as those plants which possess odoriferous steam volatile constituent’s (essential oil) in them.

Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia and USA are the major producers of aromatic materials. China is becoming increasingly important as a primary source and a very large quantity of aromatics and flowers as raw material is available. European Union and Switzerland are the main world markets for aromatics and also has established as a largest consumer of essential oils. The world’s largest importer of aromatic materials is the USA followed by Japan. The latter accounts for about 10% of world demand especially for lemon, clove, orange, peppermint and cedar wood oil.

India exports essential oils of lemongrass, mint, sandalwood, palmarosa, cardamom, ginger and eucalyptus in adequate quantity under AGMARK certification. But, for a better export quality there is a need to study the customer requirements, quality assurance and standards to keep pace with International market, Total Quality Management (TQM) through adulteration detection and modern analysis techniques with economic marketing channels.

India possesses a number of resources as plant parts, ample land and varied climatic conditions with low production costs but the essential oil producers need to study the customer needs for a regular supply of best quality products at a competitive rates. Today, second important factor for successful competition is the quality assurance. The consumers, these days, are very much aware about the quality and safety of using perfumes, essential oils and other pharmaceutical products. The third most important point is the packaging which attracts the consumers most of the times. Proper packaging along with an attractive label is always a plus point for the marketing of any product. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and Good Manfacturing Practices (GMP’s) are the quality assurance systems which continuously controls and regulate the quality production of commodities, needs strict enforcement. ISO 9000, TQM and ISO 14000 series are the some of quality management organizations, working for the development of quality standards.

Ultrasonography is the process of obtaining images of an area, organ or tissue with the help of ultrasound beam that can be displayed on a screen. Such images can be recorded on videocassettes or printed on a thermal paper. Ultrasonography in veterinary practice is a revolutionary step for diagnosis of various ailments and to assess normal physiological functions of the body organs of domestic animals. Ultrasonography is considered a wonderful tool particularly for the study of reproductive functions viz. follicular dynamics, pregnancy diagnosis and abnormalities of contents of tubular tract. In 1980, Palmer and Driancourt reported for the first time, real time ultrasonography for diagnosis of pregnancy in the mare. This report generated considerable interest among veterinarians and scientists about ultrasonography and this new discovery contributed significantly towards understanding of functioning of the uterus and ovaries of mare (Chevalier and Palmer, 1982; Ginther, 1983; Ginther and Pierson, 1984a & 1984b), cows (Pierson and Ginther, 1988, Reeves et al., 1984) and other species (Buckrell, 1988; Driancourt, 1991). The ultrasonography is fast replacing the age-old procedure of rectal palpation of genital tract for pregnancy diagnosis (Pieterse et al., 1990). This technique has been used and advocated for the use in the academics and field practice.

The association of weeds with field crops was started when ancient man started cultivating plants as crops commercially. However, type of weed flora went on shifting with the passage of time, due to changing climatic conditions, cropping pattern, agronomic practices, crop cultivars etc. When crops are cultivated invariably a variety of volunteer undesirable vegetation come up simultaneously which competes with the crop for all growth factors viz., nutrients, soil moisture light, space etc.

Definition of Weed

Weed is a plant that originates under a natural environment and in response to imposed and natural environments, evolved and continues to do so as an interfering associate with our desired plant and activities.

Weed is a plant growing out of place. They are unwanted not useful, persistent and prolific, effectively competing with the beneficial and desirable crop plants for space, nutrients, sunlight, and water, interfere with agricultural operations and thereby reducing the yield and quality of produce.

Weeds are unwanted and undeserved plants that interfere with the utilization of the land and water resources and thus adversely affect crop production and human welfare. Thus a plant out of its place or a plant growing where it is not desired is a weed. This definition was given by Buchholtz in 1967. E.g. Bajra is a weed in pulse, pulse is a weed in bajra, tomato is a weed in brinjal field. Weed is defined as the unwanted, undesirable plant growing out of their proper place which interfere with the utilization of natural resources, prolific, persistent, competitive, harmful and even poisonous in nature and can grow in adverse climatic conditions (Jethro Tull: Father of Weed Science).

Weediness: Weediness is defined as the state or condition of a field, flower beds, lawns and so forth in which there is an abundance of weeds.

Weeds are plants that are unwanted in a given situation and may be harmful, dangerous or economically detrimental. Weeds are a serious threat to primary production and biodiversity. They reduce farm and forest productivity, displace native species and contribute significantly to land and water degradation. The costs of weeds to the natural environment are also high, with weed invasion being ranked second only to habitat loss in causing biodiversity decline.

In textile manufacturing, fibers serve as the fundamental components of raw materials, distinguished by their length, flexibility, and strength, which enable them to be spun into yarns and woven into fabrics. Extremely long fibers are referred to as filaments. Fibers can be classified as natural, derived from plants, animals, or minerals, or artificial, produced through chemical processes. Natural fibers are those sourced directly from animal, vegetable, or mineral origins and can be utilized for creating nonwoven fabrics or spun into yarns for woven textiles. Typically, they are significantly longer than they are wide. Although nature offers a variety of fibrous materials, including cotton, wood, grains, and straw, only a select few are appropriate for textile applications. The appropriateness of a fiber is determined by its length, strength, flexibility, elasticity, abrasion resistance, absorbency, and surface characteristics. Most textile fibers are slender, flexible, robust, and elastic, allowing them to stretch and revert to their original form.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution brought about significant advancements in machinery for processing natural fibers, resulting in increased fiber production. This era saw the introduction of regenerated cellulosic fibers such as rayon, which is produced by dissolving and purifying cellulose, followed by the emergence of synthetic fibers like nylon, which began to compete with the supremacy of natural fibers in the textile industry. Synthetic fibers, with their distinct advantages, started to supplant natural fibers across various sectors. In reaction to this shift, there was a surge in research aimed at enhancing natural fibers through improved strains, advanced production techniques, and modified properties of yarns and fabrics. Nevertheless, synthetic fibers, being more economical and less labourintensive, captured a larger share of the market.

This chapter introduces wool as a natural, renewable and biodegradable keratin fibre produced by sheep. It explains the distinction between wool, hair and kemp and examines the historical development of wool sheep and the global and Indian wool industries. The chapter discusses the biological, physical and economic characteristics that make wool an important animal fibre. It also introduces wool's role in sustainable textiles, its value chain and the institutions involved in research, standards and development.

India is one of the chief carpet wool producing and exporting countries of the world. A large quantity of carpet wool is exported to the developed countries. Wool production in Indian subcontinent is mainly dependant on distinct type of sheep producing wool in a particular geographical area. For example small and course wool is produced by Bikaneri breed in North Western India, course wool by Deccani breed and hair type breed by Mandya breed in Peninsular India and fine wool is produced in Himalayan region. In general, tropical breeds of sheep are mainly producing course wool which is highly suitable for carpet manufacture. Most of the Indian sheep breeds are producing low fleece yield. The annual total yield of greasy wool is in the range of 1-1.5 Kg. Overall great quantity of wool is produced in southern hemisphere but consumption is in northern hemisphere.

4.1 Microsoft Word

4.1.1 Introduction

Microsoft Word, or Word as it is commonly known, is a software application that allows the user to perform word processing. The word processing means the creation, input, editing, and production of documents and texts by means of computers systems. Microsoft Word allowthe user to format text with attributes such as bold, italics, font size, and margins. It is part of the Microsoft Office suite of applications and is a highly popular programme for the workplace.

Microsoft Word was first released in 1983 under the name Multi-Tool Word for Xenix systems. Versions were later writtenfor several other platformsincluding IBS PCs running DOS in 1983,the Apple Macintosh in 1984 and Microsoft Windows in 1989. The latest release is Word 2010.

Introduction

Biodynamic farming is a holistic and sustainable approach to agriculture that goes beyond organic practices, incorporating spiritual, ethical, and ecological dimensions into farming and food production. Rooted in the early 20th century, this method is based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher, who laid the groundwork for what has become a global movement aimed at creating a harmonious balance between nature and agriculture. Unlike conventional farming, which often relies heavily on chemical inputs and monoculture practices, biodynamic farming emphasizes the interdependence of all elements within a farming system. This includes the soil, plants, animals, and even cosmic forces. The approach seeks to enhance the vitality of the farm as a living organism, fostering a self-sustaining and self-regulating ecosystem.

Central to biodynamic farming is the concept of the farm as a closed-loop system, where all inputs are produced on-site. This includes composting organic waste, rotating crops to maintain soil fertility, and using herbal and mineral preparations to enhance the health and resilience of the farm. These preparations are often made from specific plants, minerals, and animal manure, which are applied according to a biodynamic calendar that aligns farming activities with the lunar and cosmic cycles.

Over the last decade, area under horticultural crops grew by 2.60% per annum and production 4.8% per annum. During 2017-18 total 311.71 million tonnes horticultural crops were harvested from 25.43 million hectare area. India is 2nd largest producer of fruits in the world after China, with average productivity at 14.97 t/ha. Fruits alone were cultivated almost in 6.5 million hectare area and production of 97.38 million metric tons, (Anonymous, 2018).

Of the 7 billion global population, about 800 million do not have enough food to eat and majority of the them live in developing countries. By 2050, the world population is estimated to reach 9 billion. Plant pests and diseases are responsible for losses of 20 to 40% of global food production. Due to increasing global trade and a changing climate, plant diseases pose a major threat to food security today than ever before. Agriculture will have to cope with weather fluctuations that can affect the survival, distribution and multiplication of plant pathogens apart from shift in pathogenic microbial flora. Emergence of new races of pathogen potentially threaten the production of food. To cite an example, migration of 13 -A2 clonal lineage of Phytophthora infestans from Europe, during 2013, devastating tomato and potato in India. Plant pathogens also impact on environment sustainability, forest health, recreational horticulture, human and animal health.

The science of plant pathology can play a much needed role in alleviating hunger and malnutrition through development of affordable solutions for devastating plant diseases leading to increase in food production. It hold promise to ensure quality produce by containing microbial invasions and toxin contamination of food crops. Plant Pathologists have an important role to play in meeting the food security need of the nation by developing technologies for ensuring proper crop health. There is an urgent need to produce more food per unit area for feeding rapidly increasing human population. We need to act ahead of pathogens in our efforts to ensure normal crop yields. Cutting edge biotechnologies such as CRISPR gene editing systems and RNA interference are being exploited to rapidly developed crop varieties having resistance to specific pathogen races.

Crop protection has come a long way from predominantly chemical based approaches to more environment friendly IDM technologies including green chemistry. There is a need to develop bio-intensive modules for management of diseases. Decision support system need to be developed for important diseases for their timely, more efficiently management. There is need to adopt information technology at a larger scale to facilitate quick dissemination of new crop protection solutions among the farmers and other stakeholders.

1.1 Introduction to Sustainable Energy
The idea of sustainable energy has come to light in the twenty-first century as the globe struggles with rising energy demands, environmental degradation, and the menacing threat of climate change. It offers hope and a way forward for a more promising future. A major change in the production, distribution, and consumption of energy resources is what sustainable energy entails. It is a paradigm that includes a range of clean and renewable energy sources, technologies, and methods with the goal of supplying our energy demands with the least amount of harm to the environment (Andrews and Shabani, 2014). 1.2 Importance of Sustainable Energy Sources Sustainable energy is of paramount importance due to several interconnected reasons listed below and shown in Figure 1:
1.2.1 Environmental Concerns: For many years, conventional fossil fuelbased
energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas have formed the foundation of our energy system. But as they burn, greenhouse gases (GHGs) mostly carbon dioxide (CO2) are released into the environment (Hosseini and Wahid, 2016). These greenhouse gases are the main causes of climate change, which raises global temperatures, brings on harsh weather, and raises sea levels. Conversely, sustainable energy sources are crucial for reducing climate change because they emit little or no greenhouse gases when in use.
1.2.2 Finite Nature of Fossil Fuels: Because fossil fuels are limited resources,
their stocks are running out quickly. The task that follows is to ensure that future generations have access to economical and dependable energy sources. Because they are renewable or endless, sustainable energy sources provide a solution to the problem of energy security (Su-Ungkavatin et al., 2023).
1.2.3 Economic Benefits: Making the switch to renewable energy can be
very profitable. It can improve national energy security and lessen trade deficits by fostering innovation, generating jobs, and lowering dependency on energy imports. Furthermore, because they frequently have lower operating and maintenance costs than fossil fuel-based systems, sustainable energy technologies can result in cost savings over time (Shafiei et al., 2015).

This undertaking necessitates a nuanced comprehension of salt-affected soils, coupled with the crafting of contingency blueprints predicated upon resourceefficient, economically sound, and ecologically sustainable methodologies. Given the flux in climatic patterns, the adoption of proactive measures assumes heightened significance. Scholarly discourse, exemplified by Singh’s seminal work in 1998, furnishes a retrospective lens on the saga of salt-affected soils. Building upon this historical scaffold, the present exposition endeavors to trace the trajectory of agronomic inquiry spanning epochs ranging from the Vedic era through pre-independence and post-independence epochs. By spotlighting the seminal contributions of researchers in tackling salt-induced soil adversities, the paper endeavors to underscore the profound ramifications of such endeavors on societal wellbeing and environmental equilibrium.

Agriculture has undergone profound transformations over the past century, driven by technological advancements, economic shifts, and environmental challenges. This article explores the multifaceted evolution of agriculture, emphasizing the integration of modern technology, sustainable practices, and global policy changes. From the advent of precision farming and biotechnology to the impact of climate change and urbanization, contemporary agriculture is characterized by its complexity and adaptability. This examination provides a foundational understanding of the current agricultural landscape, highlighting key trends, challenges, and opportunities for future growth and sustainability.

1.1 Introduction

The human population is growing rapidly at an alarming rate, disproportionately to the production of food supplies, which will necessitate production of more food in the near future. The human population has already crossed the 7 billion mark and is expected to rise over 8-10 billion by 21st century. More than 800 million people are reported to suffer from malnutrition (Matson et al., 1997).  Thereby necessitating the need for more food production. Presently, agriculture faces the double challenge of feeding a fast growing population and at the same time prevents the degradation of the agricultural resource base. There appear to be two options for developing countries; either to improve agriculture through modernization, by emphasizing pesticides, fertilizers, machinery and modern varieties of crops; or use sustainable agriculture, promoting improved traditional, small-scale techniques (Pretty, 1999).

The term nanotechnology, buzzword of present day science owes its origin from the Greek word ‘nano’ literally meaning dwarf. When it is expressed in terms of dimension one nanometer equals to one billionth of a meter (1nm = 10-9 m). A nanometer is a thousandth of a thousandth of a thousandth of a meter, about 60,000 times smaller than a human hair in diameter or the size of a virus, a typical sheet of paper is about 100,000 nm thick, a red blood cell is about 2,000 to 5,000 nm in size, and the diameter of DNA is in the range of 2.5 nm. Therefore, nanotechnology deals with matter that ranges from one-half the diameter of DNA up to 1/20 the size of a red blood cell. 

Laparoscope

The term laparoscope derived from Greek word “Laparo” meaning “flank,” which is the side of the body between the ribs and hips (abdomen) and “scope” means to look at or examine. Laparoscope can be defined as an instrument through which structures within the abdomen and pelvis can be seen or a fiber optic device that consists of a flexible tube. Fiber optic scope is used to directly visualize the internal anatomy of a hollow organ. Laparoscope is used in laparoscopy and laparoscopic surgery. It has lenses like a telescope to magnify body structures, a powerful light to illuminate them and a miniature video camera. The camera sends images of the inside of the body to a TV monitor in the operating room. Specialized surgical instruments can be inserted through the laparoscope.

1.1 DEFINITIONS
1. Forest
Forest is the homeland of trees. Because man must protect and maintain the life of the forest and because of this;  certain natural
calamities  and  bad  use  of  the  forest  constitute  severe danger to  the forest  and the  environment at large.  In  other to divert from these difficulties, man was bound to cultivate trees. This is silviculture. Silviculture then became a science and art.

The application of machines to agricultural production has been one of the outstanding developments in world agriculture during last fifty years. The results of this development can be seen in many aspects such as reduction in burden and drudgery of farm work and worker, increase in production per worker, increase in cropping intensity due to timeliness of operations, reduction in grain losses and increase in farm employment. Mechanization is particularly advantageous when it can minimize a high peak labour demand that occurs over a relatively short period of time each year. For example, sowing of wheat and harvesting of paddy in the months of October and November, transplanting of paddy in the month of June and harvesting of wheat in the months of April and May. Severe labour shortages and high rate of wages during peak period, together with simultaneous demands for increased agricultural production had a marked influence on the mechanization of certain farm operations such as seedbed preparation, sowing/planting/transplanting, harvesting and threshing. Mechanization encourages better management of farms, improvement in working conditions and performance of jobs that would otherwise be difficult by hand. It also helps in reducing the cost of production.

Like many other beautiful plants, Bougainvillea has been chosen as the symbol of a host of countries, regions and municipalities. It is the National Flower of the Caribbean Nation of Granada and the United States territory of Guam. It is also the official flower of several counties in Taiwan and Malaysia. In the United States, Bougainvillea is the floral symbol of three California cities (Camarillo, Laguna Niguel and San Clemente). The cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale L.) belongs to Anacardiaceae family which also includes the mango, pistachio and poison ivy (Nakasone and Paull, 1998). Anacardium contains 8 species all of which are native to the coastal parts of north eastern Brazil (Azam-Ali and Judge, 2001). Cashew nut tree provides food, employment, income and the wood is used for carpentry mainly in the construction of boats and ferries while other products derived from it include firewood and charcoal (Akinwale, 2000). Cashew resins are also used in the manufacture of insect repellents and natural insecticides, while different tree parts have medicinal value as they are used to cure various diseases (Cavalcante et al., 2003). The cashew tree is a sprawling broad-leafed evergreen, well adapted to poor soils and dry sandy locations, drought resistant, but grows best on well drained sandy soils with pH of 4.5 to 6.5 (Aliyu, 2004). It favours temperatures between 15 to 35°C and rainfall over 400 mm with elevation of up to 1000 m above sea level.

Years ago before becoming the food producers, humans, for years remained food gatherers and the food collected from wild was sufficient to satisfy the food needs of human on the earth. The ever increasing population demanded more food to quench their hunger which is mainly served by plants but plants have limited intrinsic potential or threshold limit upto which it can put on biomass which ultimately could be consumed as food. Though by making certain modifications in the genetic make-up of the plant, the output can be altered. Before attempting any modification in the genetic make-up, it is necessary to understand the genetics and genetic behavior of the targeted plant. So the aim of studying the genetics and genetic behavior of the plants is to improve the quality and quantity of the produce. The inferences of genetics cannot be directly applied to the improvement but the principles of genetics and the genetic behaviors are set into particular situations. This part of genetics which deals with the improvement of the quality and quantity of the produce with the aim of benefitting mankind is called plant breeding.

Several centuries ago, perhaps as early as 6000-8000 BC, ancient man learned to domesticate species of animals for obtaining milk for their consumption. These included cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats, and camels, all of which are still used in various parts of the world for the production of milk for human use. The significance of milk as the most wholesome single food available in nature has never been debated. It is as ancient as mankind itself. The role and consumption pattern of milk in the traditional diet varies widely in different regions of the world. The tropical countries have not been traditional milk consumers, whereas in Europe (especially Scandinavia) and North America, milk and milk products have been traditional parts of the diet.

Agriculture occupies a significant place in the economy of India. It contributes nearly 20% to the Gross Domestic Product [GDP] and provides employment to around two-thirds of nation’s population Agricultural commodity exports account for nearly 20 per cent of the total export earnings of the country. The agricultural produce sector has been one of the most important components of Indian economy. Considerable progress has since been achieved in scaling new heights in the production of foodgrains, commercial crops like cotton, sugarcane, tea etc., fruits, vegetables and milk. The increasing trend of agricultural production has brought, in its wake, new challenges in terms of finding market for the marketed surplus. There is also pressure from all segments of agricultural economy to respond to the challenges and opportunities that the global markets offer in the liberalized trade regime. To benefit the farming community from the new global market access opportunities, the internal agricultural marketing system in the country also needs to be integrated and strengthened. In particular the market system has to be revitalized to a) provide incentives to farmer to produce more; b) convey the changing needs of the consumers to the producers to enable production r burning; c) foster true competition among the market players and d) to enhance the share of farmers in the ultimate price of his agricultural produce.

Commercial crops include a variety of high value plantation crops, which play a vital role in the agricultural economy and export trade of many developing and developed countries (Table 1). Tea, coffee, cocoa, rubber, coconut, arecanut, oil palm, cashew, palmyra and cardamom are the major crops grown on a plantation scale. These crops are perennial in nature and the cultivation is labour intensive, generating considerable employment opportunity during on farm operations and off farm processing activities. The most obvious characteristic is that plantations are monocultures; the same species occupying large contiguous area usually in even aged stands. Exceptions are coconut, arecanut, cocoa and coffee, which are grown either as mono crop or as multiple crops. These crops are grown in humid tropics, mainly between 20°N and 20°S of equator in an area of 35.7 million ha yielding about 74.4 million tonnes of produce and contributing US $ 11 billion to global trade during 2002.

1.1 Spice – definition and uses

Spice is defined as “a strongly flavoured or aromatic substance of vegetable origin, obtained from tropical plants, commonly used as a condiment”. A spice is a dried seed, fruit, root, rhizome, bark or vegetative substance or flower bud used in nutritionally insignificant quantities as a food additive for the purpose of flavoring. Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are leafy, green plant parts used for flavoring purposes. Herbs, such as basil or oregano, may be used fresh, and are commonly chopped into smaller pieces; spices, however, are dried and usually ground into a powder (http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Spice). American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) defines spices as “any dried plant product used primarily for seasoning purposes”. Included are tropical aromatics (pepper, cinnamon, cloves, etc.), leafy herbs (basil, oregano, marjoram, etc.), spice seeds (sesame, poppy, mustard, etc.) and dehydrated vegetables (onions, garlic, etc.) (http://www.astaspice.org/spice/frame_spice.htm). Many spices have other uses like food preservation, medicine, religious rituals, cosmetics, and perfumery or as vegetables.

The term plantation crops refers to those crops which are cultivated on an extensive scale in contiguous area, owned and managed by an individual or a company. The crops include tea, coffee, rubber, cocoa, coconut, arecanut, oil palm, palmyra and cashew. 
    ·    Coconut, cashew nut, cocoa, arecanut, oil palm and palmyra comes under Ministry of Agriculture.

Physiological or abiotic disorders are mainly caused by changing environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture, unbalanced soil nutrients, inadequate or excess of certain soil minerals, extremes of soil pH and poor drainage. The distinction between physiological or abiotic disorders from other disorders is that they are not caused by living organisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi, insects, etc.), but they are the result of abiotic situations (inanimate) i.e. their agents are non-living in nature which causes deviation from normal growth. They results in physical or chemical changes in a plant which is far away from what is normal and is generally caused by an external factor. Non-infectious disorders in some cases are easy to identify, but others are difficult or even impossible to recognize. Most of them are non reversible once they have occurred. For the identification of physiological disorders it is important that one must know that:

Food security of a country can be achieved through advanced agricultural research, followed by efficient and effective transfer of technologies. Unlike laboratory experiments, agronomic experiments are being conducted at open environment which leads to lot of variations in outcome/results due to influences of unpredictable weather condition and heterogenic soil characters even though proper adoption of local control. Results of an experiment can be expressed in different ways to make the clients to understand easily recordable output data viz., growth attributes, yield parameters and yield, laboratory analyses data like soil and crop nutrient status and quality parameters of the produce. Nutrient management studies should focus the efficiency of particular fertilizer nutrient over others, methods of fertilizer application, contribution of nutrients to crops from soil and fertilizer etc. Similarly, water management experiments would explain the water conveyance, application and storage efficiencies, suitability of method of irrigation, water saving techniques and water use efficiency of different crops as well as agronomic practices etc. In weed management experiments, the efficiency of particular herbicide in terms of controlling weeds, and increasing crop yields have to be expressed by various efficiency indices. Weed suppression ability of an intercrop can be explained by smothering efficiency.

Plants have been a major source of therapeutic agents since time immemorial. The increasing acceptance of traditional herbal systems of medicine, like Ayurveda, within India and outside has resulted in the revival of ancient traditions of medicine. Medicinal plants and their derivatives are thus looked upon not only as a source of affordable healthcare but also as an important commodity item of international trade and commerce. As per World Health Organization estimates, traditional medicines, mostly plant drugs, cater to the health needs of nearly 80% of the world population. The medicinal plant related trade is growing rapidly every year due to the growing recognition of natural products being non-narcotic, with relatively less side effects and being easily available at affordable costs.

In India, medicinal plant sector has traditionally occupied an important position in the socio-economic, cultural and spiritual arena of rural and tribal lives. About 8000 flowering plants, 650 lichens, 650 algae, 200 pteridophytes and 150 bryophytes are attributed with medicinal properties. The Indian coded systems encompasses a large number of treaties on recognized systems of medicine viz. Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha. The Ayurvedic system of medicine, which cater to the health needs of a major segment of population currently utilizes as many as 1000 single drugs and over 8000 compound formulations of recognized merit. Other systems of medicine viz. Siddha, Unani and Amchi (Tibetan) systems of medicine together utilize about 1800-1900 medicinal species. Many medicinal plants are the source of clinically useful prescription drugs being used in modern systems of medicine. Also incredible knowledge on phyto medicine is acquired in non-coded form by tribals and rural community, as is clear from evidences related to folklore medicine. Recognizing their importance, medicinal plant sector has been identified as one of the key areas by the Government of India and the Department of Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy.

1.1 Definition of Statistics

Statistics has been defined differently by different ‘Statisticians’ from time to time. These definitions emphasize precisely the meaning, scope and limitations of the subject.  The reasons for such a variety definitions may be stated as follows:

    i.    The field of utility of statistics has been increasing steadily and
    ii.    The word statistics has been used to give different meanings in singular (the science of statistical methods) and plural (numerical set of data) senses.

In order to have a clear grasp of the subject, we give below some selected definitions of statistics which are grouped under two main heads: ‘Statistics as numerical data’ and ‘Statistics as Methods’.  The former one is in plural sense and the latter singular sense.

The Indian agriculture is characterized by agro-ecological diversities in soil, rainfall, temperature and cropping system. Besides favorable solar energy, the country receives about three trillion cubic meter of water from rainfall. Of the total geographical area of 329 million hectares the net sown area has remained at about 140-142 million hectares during the last 40 years. The gross cropped area however has increased to about 200 million hectare in 2011-2012 (Anonymous, 2013). The total operational holding is estimated at 105 million with average size of the holdings of 1.6 ha. The Indian agriculture is not only characterized by small fragmented land, but also hill farming and shifting cultivation are also practiced. Out of an estimated 142 m ha net cultivated area around 40% is irrigated and rest is rain fed. About 65% of the population depend upon agriculture for their livelihood.

Soil is the most precious basic natural resource, on which depends the security of food, nutrition, income, biodiversity, livelihood and environment. But, its indiscriminate and unscientific management is a major threat to sustainability of agriculture. Over the years, there is a loss in the productive potential of soils, which is attributed to imbalance in nutrient use, mining of nutrients from soil, poor replenishment, loss of carbon, pollution, decrease in biological activities, waterlogging, soil salinity etc. Thus, land use is not commensurate with land capability.

Analysis of materials or samples is essential to understand their nature and quality. In recent years it has become mandatory to display the composition of food as well as non-food items. This is because of the need for their safety from the point of view of their day to day use. Environmental awareness has further imposed many restrictions on items of wide ranging nature. Analytical information gained from a laboratory is highly useful in knowing the qualitative and quantitative composition of the material.

Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp.) is crowned as poor man’s crop which provides much needed protein to farming families with least inputs. It is a versatile plant species which can grow successfully in a range of soil types, temperatures and photoperiods. Its deep root system enables it to overcome intermittent drought and other stresses. In India, the crop is grown annually on about 4.04 m ha (FAO, 2012) and the major pigeonpea growing states are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat (Table 1). The high protein pigeonpea dal (decorticated dry splits) is widely consumed across the country in various cuisines. The annual national production of pigeonpea is about 2.56 m tones. This produce, however, is not sufficient to feed the ever growing population of the country, and hence, necessitates huge (500,000 tons) imports of this pulse. In spite of its importance in food security and sincere research efforts, its national productivity could never cross the bar of 800 kg/ha (Fig 1) since independence. Since last 50 years, ICAR has been very seriously pursuing the issue of genetic enhancement with huge investments and some out-standing pure line varieties with about 10% more grains over the best local varieties were developed.

Vegetables are defined as edible herbaceous plants or parts of plants consumed as raw or after cooking and are rich in vitamins and minerals, low in calorific value and neutralize the acid substances produced during digestion of high energy foods.  Olericulture is a branch of Horticulture that deals with production, storage, processing and marketing of vegetables and has its origin when man started growing vegetables for consumption. The term Olericulture comes from Latin words holus-holeris = any kind of culinary vegetable, pot herb, and cultura = to cultivate.

As per the projection of International Food Policy Research Institute, Washington, there is likelihood of shortfall of 41% in food production in India by 2020 and need to produce 300mt of food by 2020. India is the seventh largest country in the world with a population of more than 1.03 billion and with 1.93 population growth rate. To overcome such problems we have to go for horizontal or vertical increase in production. As the cultivable area and water resources are limited to bring under cropping, except by way of increasing the cropping intensity/cropping system, horizontal increase has little scope. While the vertical increase in production has tremendous scope with better value added varieties and farmer friendly sustainable management and production technologies.

Everyone on this earth wishes to have a healthy life free from all ailments, stress and strain. But it is a common observation that some of us are more susceptible to diseases and fall victim of many infections while others have the capacity to resist many such infections. They are not so much susceptible to diseases. Is there anything which distinguishes them from others? An organism is made up of organs and organs systems. Like many other organ systems, in the body there is a system which is concerned with the protection of the body from infections.

The livestock sector is one of the fastest growing agriculture sub sector in India, which accounted for about 17% of the value of agriculture output in 1981-83, has gradually increased by to 25% in 2011-2012 (CSO 2011, GOI). India possesses one of the largest livestock populations in the world with 218 million cattle, 115.4 million buffalos, 160 million goat, 75 million sheep, 9.4 million pigs, 947 million poultry (FAO, 2012) which provide excellent opportunities and boost rural income and alleviation of poverty. The country has 16.5% cattle, 56.8% buffalo, 5.78% sheep and 14.76% goat population of the world. India stands first in milk production likely to be touch142.6 MT in 2014 with 4.5% annual growth rate of milk.
