Introduction

Fruits are an essential component of the human diet, and India holds the position of the second-largest fruit producer worldwide. The nation’s agricultural sector produces banana, papaya, and mango, contributing approximately 13% of the global fruit production. Nevertheless, the present fruit output in India falls short of satisfying 46% of the total demand. Fruits provide a substantial amount of vitamins and minerals that are crucial for sustaining good health and immunity. In addition, they include oils, lipids, and proteins that are used in different metabolic processes.

The overutilization of synthetic fertilizers to enhance fruit yield has resulted in problems such as economic inefficiency, ecological degradation, and potential injury to both plants and consumers. This has resulted in significant issues. In order to meet the requirements of plants and enhance productivity, a significant quantity of nutrients must be supplied to the soil. Continual crop production may result in the gradual depletion of nutrient reserves in the soil, which ultimately leads to soil degradation. Due to the exorbitant expense of inorganic fertilizers, there has been a growing focus on using bio-fertilizers and organic matter with inorganic fertilizers. Farmers are now exploring the use of the Integrated Nutrient Management system for cultivating fruit crops. This system incorporates innovative techniques such as deep fertilizer application and urea coatings to enhance plant absorption of nutrients and minimize nutrient wastage. Ultimately, fruits are essential components of human meals, although their over use has resulted in economic inefficiencies, environmental harm, and land deterioration.

Introduction

Through the use of both art and science, crop breeding is the process of enhancing significant agricultural plants for the benefit of humanity. Crop breeders attempt to improve the productivity and nutritional value of our food, f iber, pasture, and industrial crops via their efforts. In order to meet the needs of a growing global population with rising dietary demands, crops are essential. Additionally, the activity of crop breeders contributes to the improvement of environmental protection.

Since the beginning of agriculture, farmers have been selecting plants for desirable characteristics such as bigger seeds, more flavourful fruits, and other desirable characteristics. This method is known as plant breeding. In today’s world, the breeding of plants is a collaborative effort between scientists and farmers.

Different techniques are used by plant breeders, depending on the manner of reproduction of crops. This process is known as self-fertilization, and it occurs when pollen from one plant fertilizes the reproductive cells or ovules of another plant. There is a phenomenon known as cross-pollination, in which pollen from one plant can only fertilize another plant. For example, runners from strawberry plants are an example of asexual propagation, in which the new plant is genetically identical to its parent plant. Apomixis, also known as self-cloning, is a process in which seeds are created asexually and their offspring are genetically identical to their parents. When it comes to developing appropriate breeding and selection strategies, the mode of reproduction of a crop is the decisive element. This is because the genetic makeup of the crop is determined by the mode of reproduction. Additionally, it is necessary to have knowledge of the way of reproduction in order to artificially manipulate it in order to produce enhanced varieties. The only breeding and selection strategies that are appropriate for a crop are those that do not disrupt the crop’s natural condition or guarantee that it will remain in that form. The imposition of self fertilization on cross-pollinating crops results in a significant decrease in the performance of such crops for several reasons, including those listed above.

In the field of agriculture, integrated disease management (IDM) refers to a technique that is both comprehensive and sustainable. Its purpose is to successfully control plant diseases while simultaneously reducing negative consequences on the environment and assuring long-term output. This is a plan that is based on scientific research and incorporates a variety of illness management strategies in order to reach the best potential result. IDM seeks to achieve a balance between the economic viability of the project, the preservation of the environment, and the well-being of the community.

In order to keep plant populations healthy and produce maximum yields, integrated disease management (IDM) places an emphasis on prevention, early diagnosis, and the use of a number of methods. This strategy is especially important in contemporary agriculture, where reducing the quantity of chemical inputs and fostering techniques that are environmentally friendly are of the utmost importance.

Organic crop production is a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture, emphasizing environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and soil health. By eliminating synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic farming fosters resilient ecosystems and enhances soil fertility through natural processes such as composting and crop rotation. Integrated water management, often known as IWM, is being more acknowledged as an essential component of environmentally responsible crop production in the horticulture industry. Horticultural crops, which include ornamentals, fruits, and vegetables, are very reliant on water in order to achieve their full potential in terms of development and yield. Nevertheless, techniques that are inefficient in terms of water management may result in the waste of water, the deterioration of soil, and contamination of the environment. Integrated Water Management (IWM) provides a comprehensive strategy for addressing these difficulties by using a variety of water management approaches, including irrigation scheduling, water saving devices, soil moisture monitoring, and conservation measures. The ideas and methods of integrated water management (IWM) in horticultural crops are investigated in this abstract, along with the advantages, problems, and possible solutions associated with IWM. IWM plays a critical role in assuring the long-term sustainability and productivity of horticultural crop production systems. Through workshops, training sessions, field demonstrations, and one-on-one consultations, extension agents empower farmers to adopt sustainable production methods, optimize inputs, and enhance crop yields while minimizing environmental impact. By promoting efficient post-harvest handling, storage, and marketing strategies, extension services help farmers reduce post-harvest losses, improve product quality, and access lucrative markets. Additionally, extension programs often incorporate valuable information on crop rotation, integrated pest management, soil conservation, and water management practices, enabling farmers to make informed decisions for long-term agricultural sustainability. Ultimately, agricultural extension services serve as catalysts for innovation, productivity, and resilience in the agricultural sector, contributing to food security, economic development, and rural livelihoods.

The tissue system

A group of tissues performing a similar function irrespective of its position in the plant body is called a tissue system. In 1875, Sachs recognized three tissue systems in the plants.

a) Epidermal tissue system

Epidermal tissue system is the outermost covering of plants. It consists of epidermis, stomata and epidermal outgrowths. Epidermis is generally composed of single layer of parenchymatous cells compactly arranged without intercellular spaces. But it is interrupted by stomata. In leaves, some specialized cells which surround the stomata are called the guard cells. Chloroplasts are present only in the guard cells of the epidermis. Other epidermal cells usually do not have chloroplasts. The outer wall of epidermis is usually covered by cuticle. Stoma is a minute pore surrounded by two guard cells. The stomata occur mainly in the epidermis of leaves. In some plants such as sugarcane, the guard cells are bounded by some special cells. They are distinct from other epidermal cells. These cells are called subsidiary or accessory cells. Trichomes and root hairs are some epidermal outgrowths. The unicellular or multicellular appendages that originate from the epidermal cells are called trichomes. Trichomes may be branched or unbranched. Rhizodermis has two types of epidermal cells - long cells and short cells. The short cells are called trichoblasts. Root hairs are produced from these trichoblasts.

Fruits and vegetables are important supplement to the nutritional requirements in the human diet as they provide the essential minerals, vitamins, flavonoids/ antioxidants and dietary fiber required for maintaining health. India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world after China. During 2012-13, fruits and vegetables have registered a production of about 77.7 million MT and 159.5 million MT respectively (NHB, 2013. However, increase in production has not matched with the improvement in infrastructure for post-harvest management and processing. Fruits and vegetables are highly susceptible to deterioration owing to their high moisture content and delicate nature. Besides, most of the fruits and vegetables are seasonal in nature leading to glut in the local market during peak season resulting in huge economic losses to the growers. According to an estimate, 6-18% of fruits and vegetables are lost in the supply chain right from harvest to consumption due to lack of infrastructure for postharvest management, processing and value addition (Nanda et al., 2012).

4.1. Introduction

Food occupies first position among the basic needs of human beings. Food processing dates back to the prehistoric age when crude processing including various types of cooking, such as over fire, smoking, steaming, fermenting, sun drying and preserving with salt were in practice. These crude processing techniques remained essentially the same until the advent of the industrial revolution. However, the change in food habits and the quality consciousness of the consumers in the developed world raises the need of advancements in development of food processing like spray drying, juice concentrates, freeze drying and also introduces dried instant soups, reconstituted fruit juices, and self cooking meals such as ready-to-eat food rations etc., during 20th century.

10.1. Introduction

Sugar acts as a preservative by osmosis and sugar is not a true poison fo micro organisms. It absorbs most of the available water and restricts the availability of water/moisture required for growth of micro-organism. The concentration of 68 70% sugar is used for preparation of jam and jellies. Sugar adds value to these products as it imparts sweetness as well as body to these products. When sugar is boiled with acid and fruits it is hydrolyzed into dextrose and fructose, the degree of inversion depending on the pH and duration of boiling. Because of inversion of sucrose, a mixture of sucrose, glucose and fructose are found in jams and jellies.

Jams, jellies and marmalades constitute an important class of preserved fruit products. Apple jam, pineapple jam, strawberry jam and mixed fruit jam prepared by using pulp of two or more fruits are quite common. Similarly, guava jelly and orange marmalade are also examples of such products.

Remote sensing

It is the art and science of obtaining information about an object, area, or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device without being in physical contact. Remote sensing technology involves acquiring information about the earth’s surface and atmosphere, using satellite based sensor, interpretation, of spectral measurements and characterization of land resources and environmental phenomena.

The information recorded by this technology is not visible to humankind. It provides synoptic view as well as three-dimensional view of larger area. And data are received periodically and helps in monitoring the changes at short intervals. The data recording is unbiased one which is stored permanently and can be used in many applications. Thus, processing of data is faster than the conventional interpretation method. Thus, soil resources data collected by extensive ground surveys and soil maps were prepared using cartographic techniques these were tedious, costly and time consuming. Multi date, multi spectral and real time satellite data provide a reliable accurate tool for assessment and repeat coverage of the same area at the same local time for monitoring soil resources (Joshi, 2013). In remote sensing, reflected energy from the object is recorded by a sensor. The information about the object is obtained through the analysis of reflected rays. Three energy interactions occurs when electromagnetic energy falls on any surface feature i.e., reflection, absorption and transmission.

Need for certification

Forest restoration and reforestation experts know the effect the right seed source can have on the long-term economic and ecological success of tree planting efforts. However, unlike stock quality (such as size and health), genetic quality (seed source) cannot be observed by the consumer at the time of stock purchase. Where once the provincial government controlled the source of seed and its destination through the provincial nursery system, seed supply is now in the private sector, and the source is unknown or a matter of trust. Tree planting in general needs help, and the wrong seed source is only one of the many reasons that your planting project may not be successful. Besides, the identity of the source will be tracked throughout the chain of custody until it is presented, as a labeled, certified product to the consumer. The seed source may be from a single parent tree or preferably from a large healthy stand of trees. But if seed is bulked from many locations, the label on the resulting seedlings can only indicate the greater area. For example if a nursery bulked its seed from many counties across a specific place, they can only certify and market that crop as? specific place? not as one from a specific county that may have been a source for the seed. For this reason we will have to encourage collectors and growers to bulk only by tree seed zones to promote certification program for the context of successful tree planting.

Technological change and innovation are fundamental forces shaping our lifestyles, culture, and futures. We devote a substantial proportion of our wealth to research activities that span all areas of society, including agriculture. This investment, particularly in agricultural research, aims primarily to create wealth and conserve natural resources. The returns on our investment in agricultural research—the wealth created and resources conserved—depend significantly on the extent to which primary producers adopt the products of that research.

Maximizing the return on our investment in agricultural research involves identifying which research products are likely to be adopted by primary producers and by how many, as well as determining the processes required to ensure the rapid diffusion of research products among producers. This requires a deep understanding of how research products can better meet the needs of primary producers in their agricultural enterprises.

Productivity growth in agriculture is anticipated to drive successful structural transformation and industrialization in pre-industrial developing countries that possess untapped agricultural potential. Historical precedent shows that agricultural revolutions often precede industrial revolutions in countries with predominantly rural populations. Recent industrialization experiences in countries like China, India, and Brazil reinforce this perspective. Achieving productivity growth in agriculture necessitates the availability and adoption of technological innovations within the farming community. In recent years, attention has increasingly focused on understanding the delay between the emergence of promising innovations and their adoption.

Numerous factors contribute to the lack of technology adoption, including credit constraints, limited insurance coverage, high transaction costs, and behavioral biases. Moreover, the availability of information about new technologies is a critical, albeit not sufficient, condition for adoption. Consequently, addressing potential information failures that hinder farmers' adoption of available technologies is essential. This underscores the importance of extension services, as well as the transfer of information through social networks, agro dealers, and commercial partners in the agricultural value chain.

The most innovative member of a social system is frequently perceived as a deviant by average members and is often assigned a status of low credibility. Consequently, this individual's role in the diffusion process, particularly in persuading others to adopt an innovation, is quite limited. Other members of the system, known as opinion leaders, play a crucial role in providing information and advice about innovations to many individuals within the system.

Opinion leadership refers to the degree to which an individual can influence others' attitudes or overt behaviors informally and with relative frequency. This type of leadership is not derived from the individual's formal position or status within the system. Instead, it is earned and maintained through the individual's technical competence, social accessibility, and adherence to the system’s norms. When a social system is oriented toward change, opinion leaders tend to be more innovative. Conversely, when the system's norms resist change, the behavior of opinion leaders also reflects this resistance. By conforming to the system’s norms, opinion leaders serve as models for the innovation behavior of their followers, thus embodying and reinforcing the system's structure.

Sustainability is one of the main guiding principles for our modern societies. Water and sustainable development are closely linked since the provision of water is sufficient quantities and of high quality have important impacts on our environment, society and industry as well as the well-being of next generation.

Nowadays, there are several emerging problems and risk that affects the sustainable management of water resources. Pollution diffusion pose major threat. Water resources and demand for water remain unbalanced at various levels. Groundwater abstraction and over exploitation have serious environmental impacts. Reservoirs for water storage, flood control, recreation and energy production remain controversial. Climate change on the other hand is creating lot of impact on both water availability and water demand. These problems have not only physical, chemical, biological and ecological dimensions but encompass also important socio-economic issues such as, regulatory framework for water resources management, methods to balance conflicting human and ecosystem demand, financial sustainability of water management system. This shows the complexity water managers face for sustainable management of water resources and the need to shift from strong traditional, local and regional water resources management approaches to more integrated river basin approaches dealing with uncertainties in environmental conditions, societal development and global change.

Clouds play very important role on weather and climate. The formation of clouds takes place when water condenses in the sky. Clouds are visible accumulation of tiny water droplets and ice crystals in the Earth’s atmosphere. The moisture is always present in the atmosphere though it may not be visible. Clouds form when air becomes cooler until the water vapour present in it condenses to liquid form. The condensation over oceans occurs around solid particles like salt, dust, smoke etc. suspended in the atmosphere. The type of clouds depends upon temperature and wind. The clouds are classified based on physical appearance and the height at which clouds are formed (Fig. 7.1).

The division of earth’s climates into worldwide system of contiguous regions, each one of which is defined by relative homogeneity of the climatic elements (Fig. 9.1)

9.1 Koppen’s Classification

Koppen’s climatic classification describes 5 major groups of climate A, B, C, D and E which are sub-divided into a total of 14 individual climate types, along with a special category of Highland (H) climate.

A - Tropical: Average temperature of coldest month is 18°C or more.

B - Dry climate: Potential evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation.

C - Warm temperature: The average temperature of the coldest month (of the middle latitudes) is higher than -3°C but below 18°C.

From the beginning of 18th century, the human activities started increasing gradually. Industrialization, increased use of petroleum products, deforestation, mining and increased use of chemicals have contributed to the pollution of natural resource base. The proportion of gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane etc started increasing in the atmosphere and more heat is getting trapped in the atmosphere leading to rise in atmospheric temperatures (Fig. 15.1).

The changes in atmosphere temperatures have led to changes in weather patterns. This changes in weather pattern triggered extreme situations like heat wave, cold wave, severe cyclonic activity, strong winds and hail storms, f loods and droughts of greater intensity creating new records.

Rodents and lagomorphs are two distinct groups of mammals, often mistaken for each other due to some shared physical characteristics. However, they belong to different taxonomic orders and possess several key differences

5.1. Rodents

They belong to the order Rodentia and the example species include rats, mice, squirrels, hamsters, guinea pigs, beavers, and porcupines. Order Rodentia is the largest and most diversified mammalian group, differing widely in size, behavior, feeding habits, anatomy, and physiology. Based on the anatomy and functional differences of masseter muscles, it is divided into 3 suborders viz., Caviomorpha, Myomorpha, and Sciuromorpha. Caviomorpha is also called hystrichomorpha and includes guinea pigs, chinchillas and degu. The suborder Myomorpha includes mice, rats, hamsters and gerbils. These animals have the strongest ability to gnaw among animals in all 3 suborders. Sciuridae is a family that includes small or medium size rodents. This family consists of tree squirrels, ground or medium size squirrels, and large size squirrels also known as marmots or prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). Smaller and less bushy tailed squirrels are known as chipmunks (Tamias striatus) and flying squirrels (Glaucomys volans).

7.1. Introduction

Chemical restraint of insectivores is a technique used by veterinarians and wildlife biologists to immobilize small mammals that primarily eat insects, such as shrews, moles, and hedgehogs. It is essential for performing examinations, administering medications, and conducting research on these animals.

There are several factors to consider when chemically restraining insectivores:

• Species: Different species of insectivores may have varying degrees of sensitivity to different drugs.

• Age and health: Younger and healthier animals generally tolerate chemical restraint better than older or sick animals.

• Temperature: Insectivores are sensitive to temperature regulation, so it’s crucial to maintain a stable body temperature during restraint.

Okra [(Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench] is one of the traditional vegetable crop cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warmer regions of the world. Okra fruits are rich in calcium (90 mg/100 g fresh weight) and provide valuable supplementary items in the tropical diet which is starchy in nature lacking calcium and iron. The root and stem are used for clearing cane juice in preparation of jaggery or ‘gur’. The high iodine content of fruits helps prevent goiter, while leaves are used in inflammation and dysentery. It has yet multiple uses. The dry seed contains 13-22 % good edible oil and 20-24 % protein. The oil is used in soap, cosmetic industry and as vanaspati, while protein is used for fortified feed preparations. The crushed seed is fed to cattle for increasing the milk production and the fibre is utilized in jute, textile and paper industries. India ranks first in the world with 7.16 million tonnes of production 5.49 lakh hectares of area. Gujarat is the leading okra-producing state which produces around 1147.66 thousand tonnes from an area of 93.95 thousand hectares followed by West Bengal. Fresh fruit of okra is exported to UAE, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, UK, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The national average productivity is very low (11.70 t/ha), that the crop is prone to damage by major biotic stresses like fungus, nematodes and viruses like Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus and Enation Leaf Curl Virus. The yield potential of okra is low; however, it could be improved through hybridization. Marked heterosis has been reported in okra for yield and its components.

Ridge or ribbed gourd (Luffa acutangula (Roxb.)L.) is grown commercially and in homesteads for its immature fruits which are used as cooked vegetable. It is a popular vegetable both as spring-summer and rainy season crops. It is grown in tropical and subtropical countries, especially in Asia and India as an important cucurbitaceous vegetable crop (Jansen et al., 1993). The immature fruit is a rich source of dietary fiber and minerals (Sheshadri, 1990). Apart from culinary properties, it has vast medicinal properties which are traditionally used for the curing of stomach ailments and fever (Burkill, 1985; Chakravarty, 1990). The genus derives its name from the byproduct 'loofah', which is used in bathing sponges, doormats, scrubber pads, mattresses, pillows and in cleaning utensils. The tender fruits are prescribed for people suffering from malaria and other seasonal fevers because it is easy to digest and act as an appetizer. Ridge gourd contains 0.5g protein, 3.4g carbohydrates, 37mg carotene and 18mg vitamin C per 100g of edible portion. Some round varieties of ridge gourd are also used for stuffing purposes.

Ridge gourd is originated from India and is grown throughout the country by many of the small and marginal farmers for their regular income. Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra and all southern states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the major states in India where ridge gourd is cultivated. It is grown in an area of 1.00 lakh ha in India with a productivity of about 10 12 t/ha which is very low.

Melons are annual plants that have up to three meters of climbing, creeping, or trailing vines. Several of them are consumed as dessert fruits while a few varieties/types are used for vegetable purposes. Generally, the fruits of commercial varieties are sweet, juicy, delicious with good nutritional and medicinal properties and a daily intake of 120-150 g can help in weight loss, better eye and skin health (Shivapriya et al., 2021).

Currently, muskmelon is being cultivated throughout the world, especially under tropical and subtropical climatic conditions. In India, muskmelon is grown in 54,000 ha with a production of 1.23 million tons (NHB, 2018). The estimated national seed requirement per year is about 27 tons with a value of about Rs. 27 crores. The crop is cultivated mainly in rabi season (November to February sowings), thus limiting its availability in the market during summer. Rarely, melons are cultivated for the off-season market, and those fetch a premium price. The total value of muskmelon fruits in the domestic market is estimated as Rs.1231 crores.

5.1 Introduction

Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) is an important fruit crop of temperate regions of India. In India, it is mainly grown in the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and on a limited scale in North Eastern states. It is popular worldwide owing to their high nutritional value and delicious flavour, which not only can be used as fresh fruit but also has a high importance as processed product (Moradinezhad and Jahani, 2016). Apricot is drought resistant, salt tolerant, hardy and less susceptible to pests and diseases and can be grown with minimum cultural care in the tracts which are otherwise unfit for cultivating other temperate fruits.

People can reach the web, which is short for "World Wide Web," which is a huge network of papers and tools that are all linked together. The web, which was created by Tim Berners-Lee in the late 1980s, changed the way people around the world share and receives information.

The growth of technology has had an impact not only on the formats and sources of the information, but also on the manner in which library services are provided and the locations where they are provided. A portion of libraries and the resources they provide have been relocated to the digital realm created by the Internet. The web works on a client-server model: web computers (clients) ask web servers for web pages and other data and then show them. Web development is based on key tools like HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), and JavaScript, which make it possible to make web pages that look good and let you interact with them. Over time, improvements like flexible web design (which makes sure that websites work on all devices) and web APIs (which let different software systems share data) have made the web experience even better.

In accordance with this existing structure, libraries have additionally adopted the use of robots, which have shown enhanced efficacy and capabilities in executing diverse library functions. A significant number of libraries around the world have used humanoid robots to facilitate a variety of library functions, including STEM education initiatives. Academic institutions such as the Chicago Public Library and the University of Rhode Island Library organize programs centered on robotics.

Libraries may become obsolete in the 21st century if they do not begin to harness new technology and improve their information and service delivery. Robots come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they serve a variety of functions. It is difficult to define the purpose of a specific robot and its categories because each robot has its distinct feature and varies in size, shape, color, and components.

Library enhances socioeconomic development by creating a knowledgeable society, empowering marginalized people, and promoting economic activity, skill learning, cultural identity enrichment, and decision-making participation. These services are supported by infrastructure, ICT, media. Libraries are responsible for knowledge, acquisition, management, fostering mutual relationships between librarians, the publics, and stakeholders. Its role as a storehouse of resources worldwide, including acquiring, organizing, preserving, storing, and making information available. Public libraries are important for public infrastructure, community health, and supporting social development goals. The contributions of the various types of libraries are discussed below:

1.1. National Library

A country's reference library is called its national library. It is the resource that all kinds of libraries utilize since it has a collection of all books published by Academic Library nationals in every subject area, as well as writings about the nation written by both nationals and non-citizens and by people in need of materials made in the nation. As a result, it is responsible for maintaining the country's cultural legacy and making the national bibliography available each year.

Over the past thirty years, digital imaging methods have gained prominence in the food and agricultural industries due to their non-invasive nature and high throughput capabilities. These techniques provide precise and quantitative descriptions of biological products. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning, have significantly enhanced computer vision, making it a crucial element of smart food and agricultural systems. Common applications include quality control of bioproducts, plant disease detection, plant phenotyping, crop yield estimation, animal production, and animal welfare. Studies indicate that the market for agricultural-related machine vision and AI is projected to quadruple to $4 billion globally by 2026, driven by the anticipated increase in the world’s population to nearly 10 billion by 2050 and the existing 50% food gap needed to feed this population.

The Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color imaging system, which provides information on objects’ color, texture, and 2D morphology, is one of the most widely used computer vision techniques. However, 2D color imaging systems are limited in that they cannot capture the 3D spatial location information of objects. This 3D information is vital for describing the physical properties of bioproducts, such as size, and is essential for guiding autonomous robotic systems in precision tasks like pruning, harvesting, and cutting. With the development of affordable 3D imaging hardware, it is expected that 3D imaging techniques will become more prevalent in food manufacturing and agricultural engineering. However, various 3D cameras have different design principles and imaging capabilities, resulting in varying camera parameters like resolution and frame rates. Selecting the most appropriate 3D imaging system for specific applications is crucial to provide accurate information and ensure functionality under challenging environmental conditions, such as occlusions and lighting variations. Additionally, the extra 3D data, including point clouds and depth information, complicates data analysis, necessitating the design of efficient 3D analysis models for successful implementation. Following figure provides a timeline of the development of crop modelling approaches.

The future value and utility of any specimen are heavily influenced by the meticulousness with which the collector selects, gathers, and prepares the specimens. The following guidelines and recommendations on specimen preparation, field equipment, and field records are provided to help collectors produce high-quality herbarium specimens with comprehensive field notes.

Homeopathy

The word ‘Homeopathy’ is derived from two Greek words “Homeos” and “Pathos” meaning “similar” and “suffering” respectively (Mukherjee and Wahile,2006). This system of medicine is based on the principle of ‘Similars’ propounded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in late 17th century. The practice of Homeopathy came into being and gained wide spread popularity too early in the history of medicine at a time when it was impossible to provide any kind of explanation for its clinical efficacy. It is a complete and separate approach to health care using dynamized micro doses of herbs, minerals or animal products to stimulate the body’s innate healing mechanism. Homeopathy is claimed to be more ecological, compassionate and comprehensive owing to use of micro doses. Clinical anecdotal evidence exists to indicate that homeopathy is beneficial in veterinary practice also. The homeopathic remedies stimulate the body defense to heal itself. The practice of homeopathy began first and science in its efficacy is being discovered later as was in case of immunology. An increasing interest is being shown in Homeopathy as a complementary and alternative treatment for both human and animal diseases owing to ever increasing problem of emergence of resistance in micro-organisms to antibiotics, their residues in animal products, and side effects of modern drugs. But critics of homeopathy are not reconciling with the use of highly diluted homeopathic remedies and considering it as a controversial therapy. Researches with the help of modern technology are now illustrating science in homeopathy.

Materia Medica

The word ‘Materia medica’ is a Latin term that means medical matters or materials of medicine. All systems of medicine, based on drug therapies, have their own Materia medica. It is known by different names in different systems of medicine. It is termed as pharmacology in Allopathy, Dravya Guna in Ayurveda, Guna Padam in Siddha, and Materia Medica in Homeopathy. Pharmacology is based on physico-chemical properties of drug substances. Dravya Guna is based on Thridosa Sidhanda (vatha, pitha and kapha). Guna padam is based on Mucheer Amaippu (vatham, pitham, silatumam). Materia medica is based on dynamic properties of drugs applied on Law of Similars.

General Materia Medica

It is the body of collected knowledge about the therapeutic properties of any substance (drug) used for healing with their sources, preparations, doses, and use.

6.1 Summary

The study analyzed the economics of family migration decision and its relationship with urban informal sector and agricultural efficiency. The study is mainly based on primary survey, though various secondary data Sources have been consulted. The primary survey has been conducted in Birbhum district of West Bengal covering 300 households with equal share of rural and urban households. The selection of the district is mainly guided by the dominance of rural-urban migration and the wide prevalence of both agricultural and non-agricultural activities. By tracing the reasons of migration across the states of India, the study provides a vivid picture of the rural-urban migration in West Bengal and it is associated linkages with agricultural efficiency and urban informal sector. Sophisticated statistical and econometric tools have been utilized to justify the economic explanation of rural urban migration in West Bengal.

Nutrient adsorption in soil is one of the important phenomena in terms of nutrient availability to plants. Due to the nutrient fixation of the added nutrients supplied through fertilizers or manures may result the increase in cost of production due to the non-availability of the added nutrients at the optimum level to the plants. Hence, management options are required to release the sorbed nutrients from soil for better availability to the plants. The ion-fixation is driven by physico-chemical and biological processes and varies under agro ecological situations. The chemistry of ion fixation in the form of specific or non-specific adsorption on soil colloids will help understanding the bonding and adsorption reactions of ions in the soil.

8.0 What is fixation?

Fixation of plant nutrients in soil may be defined as the process, where readily soluble plant nutrients are transformed into less soluble forms by physical or chemical reaction with organic or inorganic compounds and thus restricting the mobility of ions in soil that leads to the decrease in availability to the plants. There are two kinds of fixation in general, viz; cation (N, K, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ca,Mg etc.) and anion (P, B, Mo etc.) in soils. The fixation of ions in soil is governed by important physical and chemical parameters of soil based on which the available pools of nutrients for plants may be determined.

For proper conceptualization and interpretation of data in social science research, it is essential to have a thorough grasp of the traits, attitudes, and behaviours of people in a certain field. This comprises a thorough analysis of the socio-demographic makeup of the local populace in a rural area. The physical, social, or experimental context in which the research is conducted makes up the research setting, which is important since it affects the results. A study's publication must appropriately describe the research environment since it has a significant impact on the findings and how they are interpreted.

For instance, when studying the social behaviour of chimpanzees, researchers must provide detailed information about the observation environment, such as whether the chimpanzees were observed in the wild or in captivity, the number of chimpanzees observed, their social group dynamics, geographic location, time of the study, weather conditions, availability of resources, and environmental factors. Considering these factors helps researchers understand the interplay of various components and factors within the research context.

4.1 Study Area

The present study was carried out in West Bengal, with a focus on the two districts of Uttar Dinajpur and Nadia. The research team specifically selected Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) that are operating and present in certain blocks (Kaliyaganj, Hemtabad, Hanskhali, Ranaghat-1) in these two districts.

Converting intellectual property into a useful product or process requires resources like time, effort, skill, and financial investment. Intellectual property rights (IPR) are legal rights granted to innovators and creators, giving them exclusive control over the use and monetization of their inventions and creations. IPRs are territorial and allow creators to sell, license, transfer, or otherwise dispose of their rights, similar to physical property.

IPRs are considered crucial for promoting economic growth and development, as they encourage innovation, investment, and entrepreneurship. Without IPRs, inventions and creative works could be easily copied or stolen, resulting in reduced incentives for innovation and decreased economic value. Lack of IPR can also lead to an increase in infringements and economic losses. In recent years, India has been increasing its awareness of IPR and has seen a rise in registrations of indigenous technology, patents, trade secrets, and copyrights among others.

Intellectual Property (IP) refers to intangible assets that are created through human creativity and innovation. These assets can be legally protected and provide exclusive rights to the creators and owners for a certain period of time.

Importance of IP for Innovators and Entrepreneurs

a) Protecting intellectual property (IP) is essential for fostering innovation and creativity, as it encourages inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs to invest their time, energy, and resources into developing new products, services, and technologies without fear of having their ideas stolen or copied.

For Example, if a software company develops a new program that can revolutionize how people interact with technology, it’s essential to protect the IP of the product by patenting and copyright. This protection ensures that no other company can steal the idea or copy the software, providing an incentive for the software company to invest in the product’s development.

Similarly, if a fashion designer creates a unique design for a dress, they can protect their IP by trademarking the design. This protection provides incentivizes the designer to invest their time and resources into developing new designs, knowing that their creations will be legally protected from copycats.

b) Having intellectual property (IP) protection grants a competitive advantage in the marketplace as it enables creators and owners to have exclusive rights to use, sell, and license their creations without the fear of infringement by others.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a form of groundwater pollution that is often due to naturally occurring high concentrations of arsenic in deeper levels of groundwater. The Ganges Delta’s usage of deep tube wells for water delivery has raised awareness of the issue because it has led to widespread arsenic poisoning in significant numbers of people. During the weathering of rocks and minerals, which is followed by subsequent leaching and runoff, arsenic (As) is released into the soil and groundwater. Additionally, anthropogenic sources can transfer it into the soil and groundwater. Six West Bengal districts with a combined area of 34000 km2 and a population of 30 million have been determined to have groundwater levels of arsenic over the WHO maximum allowable limit of 0.05 mg l1. (Alam et al.,2002)

At present, 37 administrative blocks by the side of the river Ganga and adjoining areas are affected. Areas affected by arsenic contamination in groundwater are all located in the upper delta plain and are mostly in the abandoned meander belt. More than 800 000 people from 312 villages/wards are drinking arsenic-contaminated water and amongst them, at least 175 000 people show arsenical skin lesions. Thousands of tube well water in these six districts have been analysed for arsenic species. Hair, nails, scales, urine, and liver tissue analyses show elevated concentrations of arsenic in people drinking arsenic-contaminated water for a longer period. Arsenic comes from a geological source. Only a few soil strata have high arsenic contents, which are determined to be linked to iron-pyrites according to investigations of bore hole silt. Arsenical skin lesions in various areas cause a variety of societal issues. (Das et al.,1996)
