Introduction

Irrigation systems can vary in complexity, from simple methods like watering cans and hoses to more advanced systems like drip irrigation, sprinklers, and flood irrigation.

The primary purpose of irrigation is to ensure that plants receive an adequate and consistent supply of water, especially in regions with insufficient or irregular rainfall. This helps promote healthy plant growth, increase crop yields, and prevent drought-related crop damage. Irrigation is not only used in agriculture but also for landscape maintenance, recreational fields, and other applications where controlled watering is essential.

Research methodology is the process of planning and executing a research study, including defining the research questions, selecting appropriate research design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The methodology is a blueprint of the research study that guides the researcher through each step of the research process. The research methodology is essential to ensure the validity, reliability, and generalization of the study.

The purpose of this chapter is providing a clear understanding of the methods, techniques, and concepts used to design, implement, and analyse the research study. By understanding the methodology, readers can evaluate the reliability and validity of the study results.

A Literature Review is a systematic and comprehensive analysis of books, articles and research papers to a specific topic providing a base of knowledge on the topic. Literature reviews are designed to identify and critique the existing literature on a topic to justify your research by exposing gaps in current research. This investigation should provide a description, summary, and critical evaluation of works related to the research problem and should also add to the overall knowledge of the topic as well as demonstrating how your research will fit within a larger field of study. A literature review should offer critical analysis of the current research on a topic and that analysis should direct your research objective. This should not be confused with a book review or an annotated bibliography both research tools but very different in purpose and scope. Key to a good Literature Review is to document your process.

Introduction

The sex of the animal is one of the most easily observable attributes of a livestock population. The importance of the sex ratio lies in the fact that it sets the future rates of fertility, mortality, and migration. In livestock, male animals are required in fewer numbers compared to females for breeding. So, for profitable management of a farm, the sex ratio has been fixed for each species. But because of the natural 50:50 chance of both types of sperms to fertilize an ovum, this preferred sex ratio is never achieved. In order to reach this economical ratio, additional efforts must be done in the form of culling. Moreover, in monotocous species with nearly one year gestation period, a long wait is sometimes required for getting the offspring of particular sex.

In dairy farming, the number of female offspring born is always an asset to the farm. For the species reared for meat, the males are often avoided due to the intense odor of their meat and handling difficulty while rearing. But when there is shortage of good quality breeding bulls, the sorted sperms will be helpful for producing the elite bulls for breeding. If we can produce only the animal of the desired gender, we can eliminate split-sex feeding, reduce problems related to animal welfare and castration, improve production efficiencies. Additionally, the costs of the progeny testing programme and embryo transfer are reduced as a result, and the value of genetic markers is increased. Apart from the livestock species, sex pre-selection is also important in breeding of companion animals, zoo animals and endangered species.

Livestock breeding for genetic improvement faces many challenges including feed conversion efficiency, fertility and adaptation to changing climate. These improvements have to be realized while maintaining or improving the nutritional properties of meat, milk and other animal products while giving emphasis to animal health and wellbeing also. Environmental stresses induced by climate change affect livestock productivity, reproductive efficiency and health, resulting in severe economic losses. Under the current climate change scenario, the viability of producing animals for human consumption is in jeopardy. In order to lessen the negative effects of heat stress in today’s world, it is urgently necessary to develop methods that are centered on breeding animals with increased thermal tolerance and climate resilience. The breeding of animals having genetic potential to sustain under changing environment conditions can be achieved through the various molecular genetics tools.

Biostatistics is a branch of statistics that focuses on the analysis and interpretation of data from biological and health-related research studies. It involves the application of statistical methods to design, collect, analyze, and interpret data from studies involving living organisms like: animals, birds including human beings. Biostatistics plays a crucial role in public health, medicine, epidemiology, genetics, and other related fields.

With the increasing availability of data and advancements in biostatistics, breeders can expect further improvements in breeding practices that will results in better outcomes for both livestock farmers and the animals they breed. Animal breeding is a crucial aspect of agriculture and food production, as it helps to improve the quality and quantity of animal products as well ensuring food security to the masses.

Nomenclature should not be confused with terminology which deals with terms, like antenna, abdomen, radius etc. Names of animal and plants may be either vernacular or scientific.

Vernacular names or local names of plants and animals are different from region to region, from language to language.

Scientific names or Latin or International names are used universally all over the world. Without them we would not be able to communicate and to use the knowledge accumulated about animals and plants in literature. These international names are under certain rules or nomenclature.

Nomenclature

No-men-cla-ture means a system of names. It is derived from Latin Nomen means name and calor means to call, which means to call by names. Nomenclature is the “language of Zoology” and the rules of nomenclature are its grammar. Since all zoologists work with animals and used their names, it is essential that the general principles of zoological nomenclature be familiar to all zoologists.

In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in the volume of datasets generated across various application domains. However, a prevalent issue within these datasets is class imbalance, wherein the distribution of samples is biased towards the major class, resulting in an extremely skewed dataset. Number of samples in the major class far exceeds those in the minor class, sometimes with an extreme ratio like 1/1000 or even higher. While traditional machine learning models trained on such imbalanced datasets often yield high accuracy for the overall dataset and the major class samples, their ability to correctly predict class labels for minor class samples is signicantly compromised. In many real-world scenarios, the minor class samples hold greater signicance and importance compared to the major class samples. Therefore, researchers are increasingly focusing on addressing the challenges posed by class imbalanced datasets and exploring solutions to improve the performance of machine learning models in handling such imbalances

Artificial intelligence is an effective technology that makes it possible for computers and other devices to simulate human intellectual abilities and ability to solve problems. Comprehensive study on artificial intelligence may be traced back to Alan Turing’s development of the renowned Turing Test in the 1950s, which examined whether machines are capable of thinking. (Turing, 1950), and John McCarthy came up with the phrase “artificial intelligence” in 1955 when he organised the 1956 Dartmouth Summer AI Research Project. They suggest that “making a machine behave in ways that would be called smart if a human were doing so” is an issue with AI (McCarthy et al., 1955). Compared to humans, artificial intelligence can analyse data, both organised and unstructured, substantially faster and more accurately.

Human life on the earth has been intertwined with the fabric of crops and livestock for its sustenance, since time immemorial, for food and protection against the vagaries of nature. When agricultural and livestock production systems began to change in the 1950s, from traditional extensive systems to semi-intensive and intensive production systems, diseases of rural farm enterprises became challenging. Especially, the emerging diseases in livestock continued to demand more and more investments for ensuring food safety and security. Despite significant progress made in the recent past in reducing the prevalence of animal diseases, there is still an increasing concern over the losses associated with diseases of economic importance that result in production inefficiency. The scientific foundation for the discipline of animal health economics was laid by Morris (1969) and further steps were taken by Ellis (1972) to economically evaluate the Swine Fever eradication programme in Great Britain using cost-benefit analysis, Martin Hugh-Jones (1975) to specialize in GIS to model diseases and assessed the economic impact on production by infectious diseases, James and Ellis (1978) to use the same tool for FMD control programme, Renkema and Stelwagen (1979) to evaluate the replacement rates in dairy herds, Renkema (1980) to analyze the economic aspects of diseases in animals, Ellis and Putt (1981) to suggest the epidemiological and economic implications of FMD vaccination programme in Kenya, and McInerney (1983) to analyze the economics of animal diseases in dairy cattle, the multidisciplinary field of animal health economics was not amply exploited especially in developing countries to assess the extent of livestock disease losses (Ngategize and Kaneene, 1985).

There are three types of disease occurrence namely, endemic, epidemic and outbreaks. Martin et al. (1993) described the term endemic as the disease occurrence in a predictable pattern. There can be low, moderate or high levels of endemicity. Although many times the terms epidemic and outbreak are used synonymously, the term epidemic is used when there is an unexpected incidence of a disease. Thrusfield (1995) defined an outbreak as the occurrence of a disease involving one or more animals.

Animal disease prevention and control activities offer valuable benefits for food production, food security and safety, animal and human welfare, and alleviation of poverty. The effectiveness of disease prevention and control policies depends on the good governance and quality of the veterinary services, in compliance with OIE standards and guidelines on animal disease control. The apex body in each country is the core system that takes care of the prevention and control of animal diseases. This body is responsible for early detection of diseases and rapid response to outbreaks. The veterinary services in developing countries require adequate human and financial resources and capacity building to carry out the tasks of disease prevention and control and to protect animal health and thus public health, including food security and food safety.

AMR is undoubtedly the most serious challenge ever faced by the world health community because of its multifaceted complex nature and its overwhelming impact over the human and veterinary communities. Livestock sector is no exception to have the serious and devastating impact from the emergence and spread of AMR. Because of a steady shift towards intensive farming and increased stocking density there has been increase occurrence of infectious diseases. Growing world population, rapid urbanization, and deforestation, shrinkage of grazing land all aided to this process. This leads to increased usage of antimicrobials in food animals – cause of concern for the scientific community as AMU is known the single most important driver of AMR.

Cytauxzoonosis is an emerging tick-borne disease of domestic cats and wild felids caused by the protozoa of the genus Cytauxzoon. The common clinical findings in affected cats are similar to other hemoparasitic infections namely anorexia, depression, anemia, vomiting, icterus, and high fever. The first reporting of feline cytauxzoonosis with four fatal cases was done by Wagner in Missouri, USA in the year 1976.

Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are recognized as the natural wild reservoir of Cytauxzoon felis with prevalence reaching up to 100% in some enzootic areas (Zieman et al., 2017). This infection is highly fatal in domestic cats with 97% mortality without treatment (Meinkoth and Kocan, 2005). However, subclinical infection in some cats has also been evidenced i.e., they were infected with C? felis but did not display the acute clinical signs of the disease before diagnosis (Brown et al., 2010 and Rizzi et al., 2015).

Several other wild felids apart from bobcats and domestic cats have been found to be affected by fatal or nonfatal Cytauxzoon sp. infection. These include lions, jaguar, cougars, pumas, ocelots, Iberian lynx, meerkats, European wild cats and Asiatic wild cat, panthers, and tigers (Jakob and Wesemeier, 1996; Rotstein et al., 1999; Yabsley et al., 2006; Andre et al., 2009; Filoni et al., 2012 and Furtado et al., 2017).

Renal failure is one of the most commonly presented conditions in veterinary clinics world over. Although the potential for recovery is favorable, most animals die due to multisystemic effects induced by azotemia. Hence, extracorporeal removal of endogenous and exogenous toxins is very essential for expanding the window of recovery. Hemodialysis has been used in treatment of veterinary patients for the last 50 years and is still one of the most expensive and technically demanding treatment modalities in veterinary medicine. It is an advanced extracorporeal renal replacement therapy which has recently transitioned from a clinical curiosity to a more advanced standard for management of acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in companion animals particularly dogs and cats.

In addition to eliminating selective toxins that cause AKI, regardless of renal function, hemodialysis is also effective in the removal of pharmacokinetically active soluble uremic substances in CKD to enhance life expectancy and quality of life (Singh, 2021). Other common indications of hemodialysis in veterinary medicine include fluid overload, dysregulated body fluid composition, drug overdose or intoxications (Foster, 2020; Singh et al?, 2024). Medical management alone is often insufficient to control the clinical signs and metabolic abnormalities associated with uremia when AKI is severe or when there is involvement of acute on chronic kidney disease. Consequently, animals are at risk of death within a short therapeutic window, despite the potential reversibility of AKI and the improvement of life expectancy in CKD.

As India is the leading global economy with livestock contributing 4.66% in total GVA to Indian Economy (PIB, 2024) and ranks 1st in Milk Production, 2nd in Egg production, 5th in meat production (BAHS, 2024). Being the largest exporter of milk and meat in the world , this has led to the intensification of animal production due to the increasing demand of major livestock products (MLPs), which has led to an increasing overall use of antimicrobials. Antimicrobials are invariably used to preserve animal and public health, but also as growth promoters at a sub-therapeutic level. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics can contribute to antimicrobial resistance. The growing resistance to antimicrobial drugs could reverse the therapeutic benefits; animals’ resistance to antimicrobial drugs, reduces productivity and leads to economic losses. Unwanted antimicrobials residues may be present in products of animal origins, in animal waste contaminating soil and water and the environment. Seventy-five to ninety percent of antimicrobials used in livestock are excreted, mostly unmetabolized. AMR poses a serious threat to the safety and quality of animal origin food, food security and livelihoods. Unhealthy and unproductive animals are no longer able to generate food products of acceptable safety and quality for human consumption and can no longer contribute to income generation. When applied to agriculture, AI holds immense promise to transform how we grow crops, optimise resource utilisation, and enhance overall productivity (Fan et al., 2012). By leveraging AI's power, farmers can make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and implement precision farming techniques tailored to specific field conditions. By employing AI technologies, it is possible to mitigate the impact on natural ecosystems and enhance worker safety. This, in turn, can contribute to keeping food prices down and ensuring that food production remains in step with the growing global population (Ranjan et al., 2023).

These models simulate how crops respond whether in terms of growth, yield, or other factors to a dynamic interplay of elements like management practices, water, weather, and soil parameters throughout a growing season. They serve as computational tools emulating the intricate growth patterns of crops by mathematically representing various facets within the cropping system (Nath et al., 2023). The roots of crop modeling trace back to the 1960s, when researchers began integrating physical and biological principles to model agricultural systems. These models heavily rely on measurable inputs, obtained via sensors, machinery, or manual measurements, to predict desired outputs such as plant growth, crop yield, soil nitrogen levels, or crop staging.

Crop modeling involves the creation of mathematical or computational models that represent the growth, development, and yield of crops. These models are based on scientific principles and empirical data, aiming to simulate and predict various aspects of crop behaviour under specific conditions. The primary purpose of crop modeling is to provide a theoretical framework for understanding and predicting crop responses to environmental factors, management practices, and genetic variations.

Millet is a small grain cereal grass bearing coarse seeds, and since ancient times has been considered a valuable and nutritious grain. It includes jowar, bajra, ragi and small millets. Small millets include Barnyard millet, proso millet, kodo millet, little millet and foxtail millet. It is rich in fiber, protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B, has a low glycemic index and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties (Ranjan et al., 2023). These have been added to the modern lifestyle as healthy foods because they are beneficial for human health due to the presence of nutritional ingredients. The nutritional quality of food is the most important parameter for maintaining human health and comprehensive physical health. Good nutrition is the driving force for growth and maximisation of human genetic potential (Radhila et al, 2011). Food quality in the diet must be considered to maintain optimal human health and fitness to address the deep-seated problem of malnutrition. Diversification of food production at both the national and household levels should be encouraged, in addition to increasing domestic productivity and technology (Singh and Raghuvanshi, 2016). Some agricultural foods are not used by humans as staple foods due to human ignorance. Millet is one of them. Millet is used as food for animals and birds. Millet has many nutritional and medical functions (Yang et al, 2012).

Introduction

Plant Parasitic Nematodes (PPN) belonging to the kingdom Animalia are considered the most serious threat to agriculture and horticulture crops worldwide. The estimated yield loss on average is about 173 billion USD (12.3%), among which developing countries are more prone to nematode infestation (14.46%) than developed countries (8.8%). Nevertheless, these PPN aggravate the loss by forming disease complexes with other soil-borne pathogens (Jones et al., 2013). PPN gain entry onto the host roots through their secretome which secretes various kinds of proteins that are mandatory for the expression of disease symptoms in host plants. These proteins are generally called Nematode-Associated Molecular Patterns (NAMPs). The management of nematodes through synthetic nematicides paves the way for the production of commodities with toxic residues that may have severe ill effects after consumption. However, the use of resistant plants is another strategy to combat major PPN and suppress their population in soil and roots. Recent research progress has revealed the various defence mechanisms exhibited by plants against the invasion of PPN. Here we will discuss in brief about the various mechanisms followed by the host plants to recognise the invading PPNs and the resulting host immune response in response to recognition of various effector proteins of PPN.

Agrochemicals are categorised based on the specific target organisms they are intended to control, including insects, weeds, and fungi. Among these target organisms, weeds significantly contribute to the highest economic losses due to their interference in crop production. Herbicides, the predominant class of agrochemicals globally, account for 48% of the total expenditure. The largest consumers of agrochemicals are Europe, Asia, and the United States. Herbicides have various biological and chemical properties (Roy et al., 2023a). They exhibit variations in behaviour and spectrum weed control. These properties play an important role in herbicide selection, method of utilisation and application, post-application effects such as toxicity and residue accumulation in the soil. The crucial factor for any herbicide application is the behaviour of the herbicide in the soil and its transformation or modification once it reaches the soil (Miller and Westra, 1914). The fate of herbicides and their efficiency are regulated by herbicide properties, soil characteristics and climatic conditions.

Meeting this demand requires a staggering 70% increase in food production from 2006 levels, mainly by making the most of existing farmland and resources.

Precision agriculture offers a promising way forward. It's about smartly managing soil and crops using technology and information to boost profits while being eco-friendly. This approach involves giving the precise amount of resources—like water, nutrients, and pesticides—at the right time and place to optimise farming. It's all about understanding and using the differences within f ields to improve crop growth and protect the environment. Traditionally, understanding these differences involved collecting tons of soil and plant samples for lab analysis. But this can be costly. So, finding better, more efficient ways to assess these differences in soil and plant growth is crucial.

Precision agriculture relies on high-tech tools like GPS, GIS, yield monitors, and remote sensing to measure differences in soil and crop growth across f ields. By integrating these technologies with tools that adjust resource usage based on these differences (called variable rate technologies), farmers can apply fertilisers and water precisely where they're needed, optimising crop yields (Ranjan et al., 2022a). This method has three main parts: collecting data, understanding that data, and then making smart decisions based on it, all tailored to specific areas and timings. New technologies like yield monitors, satellites, and handheld sensors have made data collection faster and easier. But the real challenge is making sense of all this information and using it effectively for better farming. This review delves into how these technologies can enhance agricultural production and the hurdles they bring.

12.1. Introduction

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are computational models inspired by the way biological neural networks in the human brain process information. They consist of interconnected nodes or “neurons” arranged in layers: an input layer, one or more hidden layers, and an output layer. Each neuron in the network processes data and passes the results to the next layer. ANNs are designed to recognize patterns, learn from data, and make predictions or classifications based on that learning.

In an ANN, the connections between neurons are weighted, meaning each connection has a strength or value that determines the influence of one neuron on another. Through a process called training, the network adjusts these weights to minimize errors in its predictions. This is typically done using techniques like backpropagation, where the error is propagated backward through the network to update the weights (Abiodunet al., 2018).

ANNs are highly versatile and have been applied across various domains, including image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and decision-making systems. Their ability to model complex relationships in large datasets makes them a crucial component in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence (Ahmed et al., 2023).

Objectives of Seed Grading

Minimization of heterogeneity to the lowest level and enhancement of the homogeneity to the highest level in the seed lots received by the processing unit.

Principle

Separation of seed lots based on differences in the physical properties of the seeds.

Post harvest activities include threshing/ seed extraction, drying, pre-cleaning and conditioning, cleaning, fine-cleaning or grading, seed treatment, weighing and bagging/ packaging, sealing and labelling, storing, and transportation for marketing. Except for transportation and marketing, all these activities collectively known as seed processing. However, for most of the crop, threshing or seed extraction, basic cleaning even drying is done in the farm itself and in the processing unit, the threshed seed is received.

The objective of the seed processing is to prepare the harvested seed in such a way that seed of highest purity and quality would be available for marketing, also for planting. The cleaning and the grading are the foremost activity of the seed processing. The seed, which is received in the processing unit, contains many undesirable particles, which as such cannot be used for marketing, hence cleaning and grading become necessary.

The term “green intellectual property” (IP) is used to describe the legal protections afforded to environmentally friendly innovations. It’s a strategy for saving the planet by stimulating development of environmentally friendly products and methods. For a very long time, plastic consumption has been a huge environmental problem. A report on single-use plastics has been released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), outlining steps towards environmental sustainability. This research analyses the efforts made at the national, state, and local levels to reduce the usage of disposable plastics. Green Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) is a relatively new and evolving concept that emerged in response to the growing global environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. It is an intersection between traditional intellectual property rights and environmental concerns, aiming to promote and protect innovation and technologies that have a positive impact on the environment and contribute to sustainable development.

The concept of Green IPR gained momentum as the world recognized the need for sustainable practices and solutions to address the adverse effects of industrialization and economic growth on the environment. Intellectual property rights, such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, have long been used to incentivize and protect innovations in various fields. However, the conventional application of IPR did not explicitly consider environmental considerations.

With the rise of environmental consciousness and the acknowledgement of the limited nature of natural resources, there was a call for integrating environmental sustainability into the intellectual property framework. The idea behind Green IPR is to encourage the development and dissemination of eco-friendly technologies, products, and processes while safeguarding the rights of innovators and creators.

Introduction

One of the biggest problems emerging for the survival of the people in the future is food security. To feed an anticipated nine billion people by 2050, the globe would need to produce roughly twice as much food as it does today. In order to properly accomplish this aim, food production must be elevated sustainably on currently available arable land while addressing the problems brought on by climate change. Over the past five decades, crop yields have steadily increased due to crop breeding programs and better management practices. The rate of yield improvement has, however, reached a plateau (Grassini et al. 2013). The noncompounding yearly yield growth of 0.9% for wheat at the present time, world output rises by 38%, is quite small, and is unable to fulfill expected demand levels by 2050. Therefore, the most beneficial course of action is to investigate more effective, higher-yielding crops (Ray et al. 2013).

Historically, the genetic improvement of wheat has been accomplished by sexual hybridization between related species, giving rise to a large number of cultivars with excellent agronomic performance and high yields. The main methodology for improving cereal crops is still traditional plant breeding, sometimes in combination with traditional cytogenetic methods (Salina et al. 2015). Cereal crops immediately became the top targets for genetic modification due to the worldwide importance of cereal grains in human diets. Over the past 10 years, wheat genetic technology for processing has advanced quickly.

The whole genome sequencing helps the researcher to identify the desired gene and make it useful for the breeding program by transferring that particular gene into improved cultivar. Since, the whole genome sequence is not available for all crops and animals; there is a need of advanced techniques to overcome this problem. One such technique is TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesions IN Genomes) and its related technique called Eco-TILLING. TILLING is a reverse genetic approach used to identify the point mutation created by chemical mutagen in the mutagenized population. The chemical mutagen is most widely used and it will create allelic series of mutations which include nonsense, missense, or splice site mutation. The individuals with mutation were pooled by two-dimensional or three-dimensional pooling techniques. These mutations were identified by the formation of heteroduplex complex in the mutated region of the gene. Then, the heteroduplex is cleaved by S1 nuclease family enzyme and were examined in gel electrophoresis which distinguishes heteroduplex from homoduplexes. Now, the identified mutants in gel electrophoresis were subjected to sequencing for confirmation. Eco TILLING is similar to the TILLING except for the mutant population, as we use the natural mutant population in Eco-TILLING; whereas in TILLING we use the artificial mutant population and also pooling is done with reference sample in Eco-TILLING. The advantage of TILLING is that it is a cost-effective, rapid screening of mutant population and a nontransgenic approach as it does not require biosafety measures.

Forward genetics traditionally entailed laborious steps, beginning with the observation of mutants and culminating in the identification of causal genetic alterations. While effective, this approach was time-consuming and limited in scalability. Recent innovations have revolutionized forward genetics with next-generation sequencing (NGS), genome-wide association studies (GWAS), CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats)-based screens, and advanced computational techniques. These advancements deliver precision and efficiency, enabling researchers to explore gene function on an unprecedented scale. In contrast, reverse genetics initiates its journey armed with sequence data and harnesses the manipulation of genes to observe resultant phenotypic shifts. Traditional reverse genetics, though invaluable, faced challenges like limited precision and scalability. Cutting-edge approaches have transformed the landscape. Techniques such as prime editing, base editing, high-throughput functional genomics, single-cell genomics, and synthetic biology offer unparalleled precision and capacity. They empower scientists to scrutinize gene function at the single-cell level, conducting precise genome editing and large-scale functional genomics studies. These strides in forward and reverse genetics have charted new territories for genetic research.

This is where the concept of pre-breeding steps in: a fundamental phase that acts as a bridge between the untamed genetic diversity of wild plants and the refined traits of cultivated crops. Pre-breeding represents the exploration, identification, and incorporation of valuable genetic traits from the vast array of plant species that often remain on the fringes of agricultural attention. These “wild relatives” and underutilized varieties possess traits that have evolved over time to withstand diverse environmental stresses, combat diseases, and adapt to changing conditions. Pre-breeding aims to tap into these reservoirs of genetic potential, merging them with the qualities we value in our cultivated crops. At its core, pre-breeding is a scientific journey of discovery and innovation. It involves the strategic selection and hybridization of plant materials, guided by a vision of enhancing crop performance across multiple fronts. The goal is to create crop varieties that are not only productive and high yielding, but also equipped to thrive in the face of evolving challenges. This involves a delicate dance between tradition and cutting-edge techniques as well as collaboration between breeders, geneticists, and researchers (Qureshi et al. 2014).

Wide hybridization or distant hybridization is crossing between two different species or genera, and has been used successfully to transfer genes and to create new crop species. Wild plant species related to crop plants form an important source of useful traits for quality improvement and biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Cultivated species has lost many beneficial traits for stress tolerance in the process of domestication and selection, which resulted in uniformity in many agronomic traits. Although there have been multiple cases of valuable tolerant genes being transferred from wild rice to cultivated rice, it is now necessary to look at new breeding and selection strategies that may be applied to wide hybridization. It breaks the species barrier for gene transfer and makes it possible to transfer the genome of one species to another, which results in changes in genotype and phenotype of the progenies. The barriers in wide hybridization occurs as prezygotic and postzygotic barriers. Techniques of chromosome doubling, bridging species, protoplast fusion, and embryo rescue are highly beneficial in recovering fertile progenies by overcoming various barriers in wide crossings. Broadening the gene pool of a crop is an important plant breeding method as it can enhance tolerance of major biotic and abiotic stresses and improve the quality characteristics of the plant.

An attempt was made to explore the web presence of the institutions related to agricultural and allied sectors viz-a-viz website domain and URL in West Bengal . The variables like the number of websites , their URL address, and domain use status under different institutions were presented in this section.

Gender analysis is the first and the foremost critical step towards gender responsive planning and programming. It involves collection and analysis of sex disaggregated information. It examines the differences, commonalties and interactions between women and men. Gender analysis examines women’s and men’s specific activities, conditions, needs, access to and control over resources, access to development benefits and decision-making.

Gender analysis helps to clarify the specific and often different capacities, vulnerabilities, needs and coping strategies of men and women, and indicates where opportunities for targeting effective strategies lie. Established patterns of gender inequality and inequity can be explored, exposed and addressed. This may provide opportunities and entry points to develop programs that support efforts to build more equitable gender relations. It aims to achieve positive change for women.

Food security: Gender dimensions

Standards have improved gradually over a period of years. But the burden of ill health is borne disproportionately by different population subgroups and people of lower socio-economic status, especially women, as they consistently experience poor health outcomes. Gender inequality leads to food insecurity and is also its leading cause. National food security is largely dependent on agricultural sector. The FAO articulates that food security is achieved when people at the individual, household, national, regional and global levels, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy and active life.

Rural women rarely own a control land and lack access to agricultural inputs, technology, training, extension services and marketing services. Despite being major contributors to agricultural production, they have little or no access to the means of production. They face restrictions in mobility due to social conditions, hence face a narrower range of labour markets than men including harsh working conditions and lower wage rates.

The development discourse on women nationally and internationally as discussed above, moved from Women in Development (WID) to Gender and Development (GAD) and Women’s Empowerment. This was reflected in the Government Plans and Policy Documents in their journey through more than six decades. Since independence many schemes were launched for the emancipation of women in the country.

In the Fifth Five Year Plan (1974-79), the development approach replaced the social welfare approach. This recognized women’s productive role and her contribution. The Sixth Five Year Plan (1980-85), is a landmark in the history of women’s development by emphasising on health, education and employment. In the Seventh Five Year Plan (1985-90) priority was given for programmes to improve the status of women. A major development for the empowerment of women was the 73rd constitutional amendment to the Panchayat Raj Act in 1993. This amendment specified that one-third of the posts of Sarpanch and Chairman of the block level assemblies (Samiti) and the district assembly (Zila Parishad) will be women. Today, mobilization of women’s groups particularly in rural areas has become a major strategy in bringing them into the public domain, developing leadership and increasing their access to resources. Indian women have higher visibility in the national and state policies.

Sustainability Issues Regarding Major Marine Raw Materials Used in Aquaculture Diets

In 2018, more than 70% of the fish production is from fed aquaculture where f ish meals (FMs) and fish oils (FOs) are the main marine raw materials used in aquaculture diets or fish feed (Hua et al. 2019). They are derived or reduced products from the catch of small, pelagic, low-priced marine fish (forage fish) like Peruvian anchoveta that are rich in protein, micronutrient and lipid and are commonly termed as the ‘feed grade marine fishery’ (Bell and Waagbø, 2008; Bendiksen et al. 2011). The whole fish or any other f ish processing by-products are either cooked and then pressed to produce a liquid which on centrifuging produce the fish oil or are dried and crushed into powder-like material which is called as the fish meal (FAO, 2020). FM has the enough balance and concentration of essential amino acids and FO are rich in n-3 essential fatty acids especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). FM and FO are the main ingredients in aquaculture diets as they are relatively cheap, readily available, accepted and digested by the fish. The highest amount of these ingredients are often used in feeds for the high value aquatic organisms like carnivorous finfish (eg: Dicentrarchus labrax, Rachycendron canadum) (mostly marine), eels, salmonids, trouts, marine shrimps and freshwater crustaceans (see figure 1) etc. (Houlihan et al. 2001; Halver and Hardy, 2002; Miller et al. 2008) which are mainly imported by prosperous countries adding to good seafood trade value. All the intensive aquaculture production systems like recirculatory aquaculture systems, raceway aquaculture systems, aquaponics, cage culture, shrimp ponds etc are the major end users of the marine raw materials.

With constantly increasing population and need for food security in the present era, an alternate option to safeguard the nutritional well-being of human civilisation is the utmost necessity of the hour. Aquaponics is a system which combines two food-producing systems such as a recirculatory aquaculture system and hydroponics in such a way, that, the waste of one system is utilised in the other system making it a perfect example of the eco friendly model. This system is a soil-less system which can be set up in small vicinity, providing higher outputs. The designs can be changed according to one’s needs, but the main components of the unit should be kept in mind. The main components consist of a fish tank, mechanical filter, biological filter, hydroponics unit along with sump. Although the hydroponics unit are of various kinds but broadly it can be classified into three main types-1. media bed, 2. Nutrient film technique and 3. Deep water culture. If there is a scarcity of land and water or if the quality of soil is poor, usage of aquaponics will be sustainable.

Aquaponics is a combination of hydroponics with recirculatory aquaculture system(RAS) as a single production system. Water with fish wastes coming from the fish tank circulates and passes through the filters, the plant grows on beds and water recycles back to the fish tank in an aquaponic system. At f irst solid waste are removed by mechanic filtration followed by biofiltration for removal of dissolved wastes. Ammonia, which is poisonous to fish, is converted to nitrate, a more readily available fertiliser for plants, by bacteria in the biofilter. The plants absorb nitrate and other nutrients when the water passes through plant growing beds, filtering it prior to its arrival in the fish tank.

In the 21st century aquaculture has become one of the most important booming industries in the world. With just a mere contribution to the worlds fish production in 1960’s, and able to contribute to about nearly 50% in 2021, production from aquaculture has increased manifolds. Successful aquaculture relies on creating a suitable environment for growth of aquatic animals. Water quality has to be the most important component for successful aquaculture production. Throughout the farming period, it is necessary to maintain good water quality to ensure high survival and fast growth of cultured species. There are numerous water quality parameters that can impact the well-being of fish and crustaceans, most of which are discussed in this chapter.

Factors like salinity and water temperature play a critical role in assessing the suitability of a location for the cultivation of specific species. Additionally, factors such as alkalinity, turbidity, phosphorus, and nitrogen hold significance due to their impact on plant productivity, which, in turn, affects aquaculture production. As the cultivation progresses, factors like dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and others gain importance, as they have the potential to create stress for the cultured animals. This chapter offers an overview of the presence and behavior of each of these variables in both natural water environments and aquaculture ponds.

Crabs are one of the fast-growing animals from phylum arthropod. Freshwater crabs is now becoming as an important shellfish in freshwater aquaculture production due to its delicacy and nutritional richness. Freshwater crabs are considered good for human consumption and economically important crustacean in many developing countries such as India, China, Nigeria, Japan etc. Freshwater crabs are distributed in the tropical region of the world and they spend their entire lives in freshwater. In Indian territory Western ghats of Maharashtra and north east part of India are considerably more diverse in freshwater crab biodiversity. While only freshwater crab species Barytelphusa cunicularis is commonly observed all over India. In Maharashtra Kolhapur and Konkan region stands out for well-established crab market, driven by high freshwater crab consumption. Freshwater crab serve as good protein food, lipid and cheap carbohydrate source as well as valuable mineral source for human consumption particularly tribal and poor people. Freshwater crab aquaculture, like other types of aquaculture practices, offers a wide range of culture systems, extensive monoculture to intensive monoculture. In freshwater crab aquaculture crab farmers mainly prefers Barytelphusa cunicularis as a culture species.

The global population is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, with seafood making up about 15% of the animal protein consumed, averaging 20.2 kg per person in 2020 (Boyd et al., 2022). Due to the overfishing of fish stocks, estimated at 93.8%, aquaculture is seen as crucial to meet future seafood demand (FAO, 2022). Aquaculture offers a promising solution to food security challenges by leveraging our oceans, seas, and freshwater bodies to produce healthy and nutritious food. However, it's worth noting that aquaculture has been linked to the loss of mangroves, with shrimp farming accounting for 38% of historical global mangrove depletion (Friess et al., 2019).

Mangrove forests play a crucial role in supporting diverse ecosystems and providing essential services, primarily in tropical and subtropical coastal areas where they thrive in intertidal zones. However, these same areas are often utilized for aquaculture activities, leading to significant mangrove forest conversion. For instance, aquaculture has been responsible for converting approximately 5,44,000 hectares of mangrove forests in eight tropical countries (Hamilton, 2013). To address the challenge of balancing mangrove conservation with aquaculture production, integrated mangrove aquaculture (IMA) has been proposed. IMA involves planting mangroves within or alongside shrimp or f ish ponds. However, it's important to note that mangroves within IMA shrimp systems typically do not provide the same level of biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services as intact mangrove forests.

Endangered (EN): A taxon that is not critically endangered but facing a very high risk of extinction in the natural environment in the near future, it is considered to be endangered.

The important criteria are

1. A decline of at least 50% over at least 10 years or three generations that has been observed, estimated, inferred, or suspected. 2. Population thought to consist of no more than 2500 mature individuals.

Plastic is the main component of environmental pollution, as it is continuously disposed of into the environment in substantial quantities. Since the creation of the first plastic polymer in the mid-twentieth century, plastic production has increased dramatically, from 1.5 million tons in 1950 to 280 million tons of plastic produced in 2011, with an annual growth rate of 8.7 % (Europe, 2017). By the 2050s, humans are expected to generate 26 billion tons of plastic waste, four times the current levels of plastic waste globally. Due to this serious concern, the United Nations has prioritised plastic waste and its management as one of the fundamental environmental concerns in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Plastics appear in the environment in visible and invisible forms. The visible form refers to common scenes, such as bags “flying” on tree branches, PET bottles floating in rivers, lakes, and seas or face masks we use daily. The visible form of plastic in the environment is an aesthetic mockery and a reminder of the socially indiscriminate reception of all offers from the petrochemical industry. The invisible form of plastics is called nanoplastics.

Seaweeds, also known as marine macroalgae, grow in intertidal zones to deep sea environments. Based on their pigmentation, seaweeds are classified into three groups. They are red (Rhodophyta), green (Chlorophyta), and brown (Phaeophyta). Seaweeds are the primary producers in marine ecosystems; they also contribute to carbon fixation, nutrient cycling, reducing wave energy, preventing coastal erosion, and oxygen production. The complex, three dimensional growing nature of seaweeds helps habitat marine flora and fauna. Seaweeds are consumed as food in many countries, particularly in Asia due to their high nutritional content. Along with their nutritional value, they contain bioactive compounds with potential pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. Agar and alginate from seaweeds are used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Seaweeds are integral part of marine ecosystems. Chemical pollutants including pesticides can disrupt these ecosystems by harming their populations, which directly or indirectly affect the marine environment. seaweeds are not only essential components of marine ecosystems. They are also consumed directly or indirectly in various food products (e.g., sushi, soups, and salads). The pesticides in the marine environment absorbed by seaweeds and bioaccumulate in the food chain. Seaweed cultivation is an emerging sector worldwide. The applications of seaweeds are food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and biofuels production. Seaweeds contaminate with pesticides leads to economic loss and reducing market demand. Manu of the seaweed consuming countries have safety limit for pesticide residues in food products, including seaweeds. The presence of pesticides in seaweeds also helps the development of risk assessment and management strategies including source identification, exposure pathways, and mitigating measures. The monitoring of pesticides in seaweeds provides the contamination levels over time, which helps to identifying the emerging issues, assess the effectiveness of regulatory measures, and guide adaptive management strategies.

Contemporary tilapia cultivation is aligned with the principles of circular bioeconomy, aiming to minimize resource inputs while maximizing waste and effluent reuse. This strategy involves closing the loops of various economic and ecological resources as well as decentralizing the production systems for localized production and consumption. Growing concerns about disease outbreaks along with market demands for environmentally responsible and sustainable aquaculture practices are propelling a transformative shift. This shift is characterized by structural advancements in water and effluent reuse through closed-loop recirculation systems that repurpose waste as valuable nutrients. Today one of the pivotal trends in tilapia farming is the adoption of circular bio-economy principles which is exemplified by diverse recirculation systems including Biofloc Technology (BFT), Partitioned Aquaculture Systems (PASs), Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS), bio RAS, , In Pond Recirculation Systems (IPRS) and Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA). The trajectory of tilapia culture often aligns with the trajectory of urban agriculture as well as waste fermentation.
