Introduction

Secondary agriculture is described as an enterprise-level productive activity that uses as raw material the primary product and byproducts of agriculture, as well as other biological resources available locally in its rural agrarian neighbourhood. The Government of India's Committee on Doubling Farmers' Income (DFI, Vol. IX, 2018) raised the issue of food waste and loss and proposed secondary agriculture. The committee classified secondary agriculture into three types: A, B, and C. Type 'A' avenues focus on adding value to primary agriculture production systems, either as input or output; Type B avenues focus on alternative firms that do not compete for resources; and Type C avenues focus on primary agriculture crop residues and wastes (Singh et al., 2022).

Sustainable development goals want to link primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors by using idle factors of production like land and labour. Promoting secondary agriculture can help reach these goals by increasing production in primary agriculture, capturing "value" in primary agricultural activities, and making businesses more money (Financial Express, 2019).

In this chapter, four opportunities for income augmentation in secondary agriculture, viz. plant nursery enterprise, herbal gulal farming, mushroom farming and beekeeping, have been explained.

Introduction

The vast natural and cultural resources of India contribute to the country's abundant growth. Taking advantage of this, the tourist industry in India has experienced one of the most rapid growth rates seen anywhere in the world. The travel and tourism industry accounts for a significant portion of overall economic growth around the world, and over the past nine years, India's rate of economic expansion has consistently been higher than that of the whole economy. In 2019, the sector expanded at a pace of 3.5 percent, which was much higher than the world GDP growth rate of 2.5 percent. The tourist industry has a considerable bearing on India's overall economic performance. India is ranked as one of the top ten tourist destinations in the world. The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) disclosed information indicating that the Indian tourism sector contributed INR 194 billion to India's GDP in 2019. Additionally, the tourism industry in India supported 87.5 million jobs, which accounted for 12.75 percent of total employment. However, for the past two years, due to COVID-19, the tourism sector worldwide, as well as in India, has faced huge losses and is in distress. So, it’s the right time to focus on developing tourism under different wings.

The role of toxicology in the evaluation of new agrochemicals

The widespread use of agrochemicals for crop protection may expose humans, animals, and the environment to toxic chemicals. Humans may be exposed during manufacture or application, and to a lesser extent as consumers of food products containing trace amounts of residues.

Strategies of toxicity testing

No-Observable-Adverse- Effect-Level (NOAEL)

A level in which the total diet that causes no adverse effect in treated animals when compared to untreated animals maintained under identical conditions. This NOAEL is expressed on a mg/kg of body weight/day basis. Chronic and sub chronic studies are need to be carried out in different species to determine NOAEL values.

It depends on how much of the substance an organism is exposed to, but all chemicals are toxic to some degree. Toxicology studies try to figure out the exact types and amounts of harmful effects, as well as the lowest doses that won’t have any negative effects (called the “No Observed Adverse Effect Level” or NOAEL). Most data come from studies with lab animals and cells that have been grown in a lab. Using these numbers and extrapolation or uncertainty factors, it is possible to figure out an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI). This is the maximum amount of a substance that a person can take in every day without putting themselves at a very high risk of getting sick. These numbers will be compared to how people might be exposed to a compound in the environment, including through food. This will show if the use of an agrochemical is potentially allowed.

Introduction

Proteins are complex biomolecules composed of amino acids, playing crucial roles in virtually all biological processes. They serve as enzymes, hormones, structural components, signaling molecules etc.

Structure/ Levels of Organization of Proteins

Generally, Proteins are polymers of L-alpha amino acids, linked by peptide bonds. The sequence and structure of these amino acids determine the protein’s function. Protein structure is hierarchically organized into four levels:

1. Primary Structure

• The linear sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain, determined by the genetic code.

2. Secondary Structure

• Local folding of the polypeptide chain into structures such as α-helices and β-pleated sheets, stabilized by hydrogen bonds.

Introduction

All enzymes are proteins, except a tiny subset of catalytic RNA molecules. Most of the classical metabolic enzymes are named by adding the suffix -ase to the name of their substrates or to a descriptive term for the reactions they catalyze. For example, urease has urea as a substrate. Alcohol dehydrogenase catalyzes the removal of hydrogen from alcohols (i.e., the oxidation of alcohols). A committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB maintains a classification scheme that categorizes enzymes according to the general class of organic chemical reaction that is catalyzed The six classes are Oxidoreductases, Transferases, Hydrolases, Lyases, Isomerases, and Ligases.

The integrity of their natural protein structure is necessary for their catalytic activity. Catalytic activity is typically lost when an enzyme denatures or dissociates into its constituent subunits. An enzyme’s catalytic activity is always eliminated when it is disassembled into its constituent amino acids. Thus, the catalytic activity of protein enzymes depends on their primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures. Aside from their amino acid residues, certain enzymes don’t need any other chemical groups to function. Others need a cofactor, which is an extra chemical element. Cofactors can be complex organic or metalloorganic molecules called coenzymes, or they can be one or more inorganic ions like Fe2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, or Zn2+.

Energy is the major source required to maintain the structure and function of all living cells. This energy is derived from oxidation of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins that is taken in the form of diet. The energy liberated from the process of oxidation is generally captured in the form of ATP, which is known as energy currency of the living cells. Each gram of carbohydrate and protein gives about 4 Kcal on oxidation, while each gram of fat gives about 9 Kcal. Oxidation means addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen from a compound or removal of electron from an ion or atom increasing its positive charge. Reduction means removal of oxygen or addition of hydrogen to a compound or addition of electron to an ion or atom decreasing its positive charge. Commonly the oxidation reactions are conjugated with reduction reactions and known as redox reactions. Redox reactions are often associated with release of energy. The redox chain constitutes chain of different compounds of increasing redox potentials between hydrogen and oxygen. The living cells depend on redox reactions for their energy requirements. The reactions start by removal of H2 from the substrate, which is then transferred to different components of redox chain, then finally to oxygen to form water. Components of redox chains have a redox potential higher than hydrogen and lower than oxygen.

Water is the most abundant compound in the body, and most of life’s essential processes take place in this aqueous environment. Although there is substantial variation, the total body water (TBW) of most domestic animals is approximately 60% of body weight (0.60 l/kg).Electrolytes are substances that exist as positive or negative charged particles in aqueous solution. The positively charged particles are “cations,” and the negatively charged particles are “anions”. The osmotic properties of a solute in solution are related to the number of particles in solution and not to its weight or its charge. One osmole of a non-dissociable substance is equal to its molecular weight in grams. One osmole of any substance that dissociates in solution into two or more particles is equal to the molecular weight in grams divided by the number of particles into which each molecule dissociates. Osmolarity is defined as the number of osmoles per l of final solution, whereas osmolality is the number of osmoles per kilogram of water. Although the expressions are similar, osmolality more correctly describes the osmotic properties as measured in the clinical laboratory.

The present study was conducted on 36 adult dogs of six different breeds in order to standardize normal ocular parameters. Six breed specific groups of dogs were Group 1 (German Shepherd), Group 2 (Pug), Group 3 (Spitz), Group 4 (Labrador Retriever), Group 5 (Rottweiler) and Group 6 (Non-descript) with 6 animals (3 males and 3 females) each. STT values revealed non-significant difference between sex and eyes. Among groups only Pug breed showed significant difference with GSD breed. Intraocular pressure reflected a non-significant difference between sex and eyes. IOP values of Labrador group were within the normal range but differ significantly from Pug and Non-descript groups. B mode ultrasonography revealed internal structures with various echogenicity. In B mode ultrasonographic biometry a significant difference in all parameters was observed among groups except ODL and OND. Longest and shortest axial globe length was revealed in Labrador and Spitz, respectively. Overall mean for sex revealed a longer vitreous chamber depth, axial globe length and optic disc length in males as compared to females. Non-significant difference was observed in all the parameters between left and right eyes. Standardized breed specific ophthalmic parameters were useful in diagnosing various ophthalmic affections, viz. keratoconjunctivitissicca, glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment etc. in clinical cases.

Formalin, traditionally used for preserving anatomical specimens in veterinary education, poses well-documented hazards like toxicity and carcinogenicity. This proposal advocates for adopting safer, innovative preservation methods that maintain anatomical integrity and meet modern educational and ethical standards. The study aims to evaluate various formalin-free preservation methods: plastination, cryopreservation, resin embedding, and 3D scanning and printing. Plastination involves fixing specimens in 10% formalin, dehydrating in acetone, impregnating in glycerine, and curing in corn starch. Cryopreservation rapidly freezes tissues in liquid nitrogen, all chemical reactions, and biological processes are suspended. Resin embedding encapsulates specimens in epoxy resin, and advanced imaging creates detailed, interactive 3D models. Plastination maintains anatomical integrity and durability better than traditional formalin, retaining original structures with minimal distortion, and providing long-lasting educational resources. Cryopreservation preserves tissue well but requires specific storage conditions. Resin embedding produces clear, durable specimens but is less flexible for handling. 3D printing offers highly detailed, interactive models without chemical exposure risks. All methods avoid formalin’s toxic properties enhancing safety for students and educators. Transitioning to formalin-free preservation methods improves health and safety by eliminating toxic exposure and enhances educational value with more interactive and detailed models. These methods promote sustainability and align with modern ethical standards. Advanced imaging supports contemporary education by providing precise, manipulatable anatomical representations in a virtual environment. Adopting innovative preservation methods such as plastination, cryopreservation, resin embedding, and advanced imaging technologies ensures safer, high-quality anatomical education aligned with modern standards of Veterinary anatomy education.

Animal models in diabetes research are very common when most of the existing models are developed as a conventional model either for Type 1 or for T2D. But very often a conventional model of diabetes cannot demonstrate the specific pathogenesis of diabetes related complications. Therefore, the necessity of the individual and specific model for diabetic complications has been raised in the recent years to achieve the authentic outcomes of specific research aims. A number of animal models of diabetic neuropathy have been developed in last few decades approaching from diverse point of views. However, most of them did not receive much popularity because of their considerable number of limitations and disadvantages. In a comprehensive review, Harati [4] reported that the major handicap in studying diabetic neuropathies is the lack of a suitable animal model that addresses acute and chronic events leading to diabetic neuropathy. Hence, in this review, the pathogenesis, advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of several genetic and nongenetic animal models of diabetic neuropathy have been discussed to substantiate their efficacy for human study and in order to guide diabetes research groups to more accurately select the most appropriate models to address their specific research questions.

Toxicological screening is essential for the development of new drugs (ND) and exploring the therapeutic potential of existing compounds.While animal testing is still regarded as the “gold standard” in traditional toxicity assessments, there is a growing need to transition towards alternative methods for drug safety testing. This shift is driven by the emergence of cutting-edge technologies and the adoption of the 3Rs principle (replace, reduce, refine) which emphasizes animal welfare.Routine in vitro safety screeningalong with GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and non-GLP toxicity testing follow regulatory frameworks established by agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), ICH (International Council for Harmonization)and EMA (European Medicines Agency) (Tang et al., 2023).In recent years, there has been a shift towards enhanced safety screening during the lead optimization stages of drug discovery. Regulatory toxicology testing plays a pivotal role in determining the potential risks associated with new drug compounds and ensuring their safety before they can proceed to human clinical trials and, ultimately, be marketed to the public.

Introduction

Research in different fields of biological science requires test systems to observe the effects of chemicals or drugs. Testing new chemical entity (NCE) in drug discovery and development requires either in vitro or in vivo systems, including cell culture, tissue, organs and whole animal. Various advantages and disadvantages of each test system force scientists to find an alternative test system. The use of laboratory animals like rodents and non-rodents for evaluation of the effects of drugs or toxicity studies having ethical concerns. The cell-based and tissue-based test systems have various disadvantages including problem related prediction of the desirable and undesirable effects in animals. All such factors favor the use of laboratory animals like rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, and primates in the pre-clinical phase of drug discovery. However, cost, manpower, and time-consuming efforts can be considered unfavorable for the use of such animals for testing every newly synthesized compound. Because of such difficulties in the field of new research with animal models, scientists made efforts to identify a newer animal model that can replace currently available animal species in research up to a certain extent. The animal model that is used in such drug discovery programs and toxicological testing must have homology to human beings or target species. The limitations or disadvantages of currently available animal models may be solved up to a certain level by using aquatic animal species like zebrafish.

Roundworms (Nematodes)

1. Ascaridia galli

A. galli is the common roundworm of poultry seen in intestines at the time of necropsy. This parasite may cause retardation of growth, loss of egg production, catarrhal enteritis and sometimes mortality due to obstruction of gut (Fig.9.1).

Etiology

• A. galli parasites are grey, thread like 5-10 cm in length.

• Eggs are elliptical with thick and shiny wall.

Pathogenesis

Transmission occurs through faecal - oral route. The eggs may survive for several months in litter and they take at least 10-15 days to develop the infective stage. The eggs of parasites hatch in proventriculus or intestine to develop fully grown parasite within 40-50 days.

India is home to rich animal resources; it is a source of sustainable livelihood and support during the subsistence crisis of farmers. As per the “First Revised Estimates of National Income, Consumption Expenditure and Capital Formation for 2020-21” released by National Statistical Office (NSO), MoSPI the Gross Value Added (GVA) of livestock sector is about Rs. 11,14,249 crores at current prices during FY 2020-21 which is about 30.87% of Agricultural and Allied Sector GVA and 6.17% of total GVA. At constant prices (2011-12), the GVA of livestock sector is about Rs. 6,17,117 crores during FY 2020-21 with a growth of 6.13% over previous financial year. It contributes about 3.9% to national GDP and 24.8% to agricultural GDP (At 2011-12 Prices) in 2013-14 (GoI 2022). According to the report Situational Assessment of Agricultural Households by the NSSO, a compounded annual income growth rate of 13.7% was observed between 2003 and 2013. Restructuring agriculture processes & policy interventions required to increase the income in real terms (ICFA, 2016). About 29% rural population in the country is below poverty line .Major source of livelihood of rural people is crops, however, it is largely restricted by uncertain and erratic precipitation and low input production system, compelling them for poverty and distress migration. Whereas, small ruminants possess an mechanism for coping up draught because of better adaptability and mobility as compared to crops and large ruminants. Livestock particularly sheep and goat rearing in India is closely interwoven with crop farming. Households cultivating less than 2.0 ha of land (marginal and small) are the main custodian and possess more than 76% goat and 70% of sheep population of the country respectively.

Goat (Capra hircus) is a domesticated species of goat-antelope typically kept as livestock. It was domesticated from the wild goat (C. aegagrus) of Southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. It is one of the oldest domesticated species of animal, according to archaeological evidence that its earliest domestication occurred in Iran at 10,000 calibrated calendar years ago. Beginning approximately 10,000 years ago, Neolithic farmers in the Near East started keeping small herds of goats for both their meat and milk, as well as for clothing and building with the hair, bone, skin and power. Undoubtedly, goat farming at the time was natural resource based and is organic in nature. Mechanical (1880–1930) and chemical (1920–1950) revolutions in agriculture, significantly influenced the modern day livestock farming predominately in non-organic form. Biological advances in the genetically modified organisms in the 70s further complicated the researcher–producer–consumer dynamics. As of today, there are over 750 million goats scattered throughout the world. Goats are found in nearly every country on the planet and in nearly every climate, each one with a different purpose. There are more than a thousand adapted breeds in existence. Goats have been used for milk, meat, fur, and skins across much of the world.

Among the small ruminants, goat is perhaps the most useful animal providing milk as well as meat. It is also superior in converting the feeds to meat and other products in a short period than most of the other livestock (Pandit&Dhaka,2005). Goats contribute milk, meat, fiber, skins and manure to the subsistence of small holders and landless rural poor. Goat meat accounted for almost 37 per cent of the total meat production in the country (Chandra, 2002). Importance of goats lies in the fact that human population is increasing very rapidly creating increasing demands for animal protein foods on the one hand and the feed resources for large ruminants are decreasing due to shrinkage of grazing lands on the other.Goats make important economic contributions in India. They are so vital to a large human population that their contribution to national economy cannot be overlooked. Goats require relatively much lower investments and facilities in terms of housing, feed, labour and health care. There is quick pay of dues because of fast multiplication and early maturity. Further, the risk involved in goat farming is much lower compared to other livestock and crops production.In Gujarat state, Population of milch goat has shown increasing trend as it was 23.36 lakh in 1951 and in year 2019 it found 48.68 lakh, which shows 47.98%, increased. As per the previous livestock census i.e. 2012, goat population declined by 1.84 percent which shows goat farming should give emphasis to enhance rural farmer’s income.

Ceratophyllus gallinae – commonest flea of domestic poultry may be responsible for irritation, restlessness and even anaemia Feeds readily on humans and domestic pets and its often acquired in the handling of poultry and from injured and wild birds brought into houses could migrate into rooms from nests under adjacent caves.

Echidnophaga gallinacea -‘stick tight’ flea-seen on the skin of the fowl (usually comb and wattles). Absence of genal and pronotal comb. Fleas established in a poultry house - Remove and burn all litter them spray the poultry house with an insectide.

Introduction

The current health situation in poultry farming is dotted with cases where these emerging or re-emerging diseases attack birds. A large majority of them are of viral origin and a powerful immunosuppressive effect is observed, sometimes accompanied by bacterial infections. Most of the important infectious diseases of poultry have been known for many years and are controlled by medication, vaccination, eradication and bio-security. Examples of such diseases that were known before the intensive commercial poultry industry development are infectious bronchitis (IB), newcastle disease (ND), infectious bursal disease (IBD), lymphoid leucosis and so on. From time to time, new diseases emerge to provide fresh challenges for diagnosis, control and understanding of their epidemiology.

World Health Organization (WHO) definition of an emerging disease is defined as a disease that has appeared in a population for the first time, or that may have existed previously but is rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range. Diseases that reappear after a period of absence can be considered as re-emerging. Some of these include runting/ stunting syndrome and inclusion body hepatitis. In addition, other well-established diseases evolve in different ways and can also present problems for diagnosis and control. In the wider sphere, it is recognized that emerging viral infections in both humans and animals have been reported with increased frequency in recent years. Examples are SARS, avian influenza, West Nile virus and the Nipah virus. The more recent diseases of viral origin, others that have re-emerged and some experiences from previous emerging diseases are living examples for threat to the poultry industries. In addition, infectious bronchitis is an example of a disease which the causal virus is showing constant evolution. The impact of infections caused by the avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) is an example of recently emerged viral agent.

Any abnormal condition, which affects the normal functioning of cells, tissues, organs and any other system in an individual, is called a disease. In all living organisms, including plants, animals, birds and humans, diseases can be caused due to infectious or non-infectious agents and various other factors. Laboratory tests may identify organisms directly (eg, visually, using a microscope, growing the organism in culture) or indirectly (eg, identifying antibodies to the organism). Some tests (eg, Gram stain, routine aerobic culture) can detect a large variety of pathogens and are commonly done for many suspected infectious illnesses. However, because some pathogens are missed on these tests, clinicians must be aware of the limitations of each test for each suspected pathogen. In such cases, clinicians should request tests specific for the suspected pathogen (eg, special stains or culture media or advise the laboratory of the suspected organism(s) so that it may select more specific tests. The main causative factors of diseases in humans include internal factors, genetic irregularities, allergies, poor immune system, external factors and a lot more.

Introduction

Musculoskeletal diseases in poultry are often exhibited as lameness or leg weakness. Numerous factors, including those related to diet, animal husbandry, infections, or heredity, might contribute to musculoskeletal problems. Lameness can be exhibited due to disorders in the central or peripheral neurological systems, reproductive system, trauma or infection in the foot, leg, hip, spine, or just a generalised sickness. Less frequently, musculoskeletal anomalies can affect the bird’s beak, neck, or wings. The diseases can also be classified as infectious origin (bacterial, viral) or non-infectious origin (congenital deformities, nutritional, trauma or neoplasia). Modern poultry production lines put a lot of strain on the musculoskeletal system due to factors like growth rate in broiler chickens and egg output in laying hens. As a result, poor nutrition and husbandry practices frequently lead to musculoskeletal disorders. Thus, musculoskeletal disorders in poultry can be controlled by choosing proper genetic selection, efficient vaccinations, adequate nutrition and proper husbandry practices.

Introduction

Disorders of the hemopoietic system in poultry can significantly impact the health and productivity of these birds. The hemopoietic system is responsible for the production of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Disorders within this system can lead to various health issues, including anemia, immunodeficiency, and impaired blood clotting. Some of the common disorders of hemopoietic system include:

1. Anemia: Anemia is a condition characterized by a decrease in the number of red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood. In poultry, anemia can be caused by various factors, including nutritional deficiencies (such as iron deficiency), infectious diseases (such as avian malaria or chicken infectious anemia), and parasitic infestations (such as blood-sucking parasites like leucocytozooncaulleryi, ticks, lice and mites).

2. Avian Leukosis:Avian leucosis is a viral disease caused by avian leukosis virus (ALV). It primarily affects young birds, causing tumors in various organs, including the spleen, liver, and bursa of Fabricius. Avian leukosis can lead to immunosuppression, anemia, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. The avian leucosis diseases include lymphoid leucosis (affecting lymphoid cells), myeloid leucosis (affecting myeloid cells), osteoptrosis, etc. and can result in immunodeficiency, increased susceptibility to infections, and other systemic symptoms. It also affects blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and lymphatic system, leading to an overproduction of abnormal white blood cells.

Poultry is one of the most widespread food industries worldwide. Chicken is the most common type of poultry in the world. The term broiler is applied to chickens that have especially been bred for meat; they grow rapidly. Broiler strains are based on hybrid crosses between Cornish White, New Hampshire and White Plymouth Rock. In broiler production there are two main production phases – keeping of parent stock and production of day-old-chicken (DOC); and growing and finishing of broilers.

The primary purpose of any enterprise is to maximize return on investment over the long-term. It is therefore necessary to market poultry, meat products, and eggs at a price which allows farmers or integrators to maintain profitability in a competitive market. Cost-effective programs of biosecurity and vaccination are required to prevent or limit the impact of disease. It is emphasized that the incremental return in the form of enhanced egg production, hatchability, liveability, growth rate, and feed conversion efficiency must exceed capital and operating expenditures on disease prevention.

There has been a considerable progress in the overall production in the dairy sector. Without a proper marketing, the country would not attain the expected rate of growth in dairy farming. Marketing is a flow of goods and services from producer to consumer and users. In this process the activities include moving the goods from the point of production to the point of consumption. The activities like creation of time, place, form and utility are involved. According to Philip Kotler, marketing as a human activity directed at satisfying the needs and wants through exchange process. The performance of the trade activities involved in the f low of goods and services affect the marketing efficiency and producers share in the consumer rupee. A marketing system consists of different milk marketing channels. That marketing channel is considered good in which producer get the highest share in consumer rupee and consumer share is highest in producers rupee. The interest of the Producer is to get the highest possible returns from their milk. Between them, there are marketing intermediaries or middlemen who perform various marketing functions like transporting and retailing. All the intermediaries/ middlemen are also interested to make highest profit from the milk business. The present lesson provides information on the economic aspect of marketing of milk and milk products through a empirical study conducted in Rajasthan state.

Trade in fruit and vegetable products has been among the most dynamic areas of national as well as international agricultural trade, stimulated by rising incomes and growing consumer interest in product variety, freshness, convenience, and year-round availability. Advances in production, postharvest handling, processing, and logistical technologies—along with increased levels of international investments have played a facilitating role.

4.1. Global Trade of Processed Fruits & Vegetables

4.1.1. Country Wise Trends of Export in Value-Added Fruits

Table 4.1 shows the processed fruits export of top 15 countries in the global market. The USA remained the largest exporter at global level with the exports valued at USD 15089573 thousand with a share of about 12 per cent. The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR %) of the USA was noted 7.58 per cent. Spain is the second largest exporter of processed fruits and vegetables with the CAGR of 6.14 per cent and share of 8 per cent. Some other dominant exporting nations are namely, Mexico, Netherlands, China, and Chile, showing a CAGR nearly, 13 per cent, 11 per cent, 16 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively.

The Government of India has accorded ‘high priority’ status to the food processing industry. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) has been set up as a nodal agency for formulation and implementation of the policies and plans for the food processing industries.

With an overall objective of positioning India as the ‘Food Basket’ to the world, several initiatives have been undertaken with the objective of promoting investments, innovation and bringing best practices. This vision is in line with the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government (CII, 2019).

5.1. Policy Interventions (MOFPI, 2019)

5.1.1. Infrastructure Development

Fragmented, inadequate, and inefficient infrastructure along the supply chain has been identified as one of major factor inhibiting growth of food processing sector. As adequate investment for infrastructure has not been forthcoming from private sector, government will continue to assist, participate and incentivize creation of supply chain infrastructure for food processing sector.

Traditional agricultural practices have been an integral part of food production in India since ages. These practices have the potential to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change with spatial and sequential diversity (Patel et al., 2020). Traditional Agriculture can be defined as a primitive style of farming that involves the intensive use of indigenous knowledge, traditional tools, natural resources, organic fertilizer and cultural beliefs of the farmers (Abeysekara et al., 2021). It is noteworthy that it is still used by about 50% of the world population. Traditional agriculture can be defined as a set of knowledge- practice-trust nexus which has developed by its adaptive nature and passes on to the next generation through a cultural transmission that explains the relationship between living beings with their environment (Berkes et al., 2000).

Soil fertility management refers to the practices and techniques used to maintain and improve the fertility of soil. Soil fertility is crucial for agriculture because it determines the soil's ability to provide essential nutrients to plants, support their growth, and sustain productivity over time. Effective soil fertility management aims to optimize soil health and productivity while minimizing environmental impacts.

3.1 Key Aspects of Soil Fertility Management Include

1. Nutrient Management: This involves supplying essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc.) to the soil through organic or synthetic fertilizers to meet the needs of crops.

2. Soil Amendments: Adding organic matter (such as compost or manure) or other amendments (like lime or gypsum) to improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability.

3. Crop Rotation and Diversification: Rotating crops and diversifying plant species can help manage nutrient depletion and improve soil health by reducing pest and disease pressures.

4. Conservation Tillage: Minimizing soil disturbance through reduced tillage or no-till practices helps preserve soil structure, reduce erosion, and maintain organic matter content.

5. Cover Cropping: Planting cover crops during fallow periods or between main crops helps prevent soil erosion, improve nutrient cycling, and enhance soil fertility.

9.1 Plastering Storage area with Lime and Sand: The storage areas, known as Hagevu, are plastered with a mixture of lime and sand. These areas can store 20-30 bags of grain (Heggere and Chitradurga, Karnataka). Nagarathna (2000).

9.2 Indoor Bamboo or Reed Structure for Grain Storage: Indoor storage structures are typically made of bamboo. In regions where bamboo is scarce, farmers use locally available reeds. These structures are cost-effective since they utilize local materials and knowledge, but they do not protect grains from rodents and insects, have a short lifespan, are susceptible to fire, and require frequent maintenance (Andhra Pradesh and Orissa). Navanitha Raju (1999).

9.3 Storage of Onion Bulbs on Bamboo Platform: Onion bulbs can be stored for up to a year on a platform made of loosely woven bamboo strips, raised 2-3 feet above the ground to allow air circulation. The bulbs are piled 2-3 feet high and protected from sun and rain with a cover (Junagadh, Gujarat). Babulbhai (1993).

9.4 Method of Storage of Food Grains in Khanti: A 'Khanti' is constructed in areas with low underground water levels, where a 15-foot deep Khanti can be made. It has a sloping shape with a base 10-15 meters wide and a top one foot wide. A one-foot thick layer of husk mixed with neem is spread at the bottom and sides for pest protection. Different grains can be stored by separating them with layers of husk and large leaves. A Khanti can store 10-15 tonnes of grains from May to November (Maharashtra). Singh (1999).

9.5 Storage of Potato Tubers: Farmers in Hoskote village, Karnataka, store potato tubers in the field on an elevated, hardened soil area of 25 × 4 square feet, supported by 12 stone pillars. A thatched roof provides shade, and a bed of local grass and sugarcane leaves is spread on the floor. Harvested tubers are layered on this bed, with additional layers of leaves on top. The storage is checked for pests every 2-3 weeks. Calotropis gigantea leaves and branches are used around the heap to prevent rodent attacks. This method keeps potatoes cool even in hot conditions (Bangalore, Karnataka). Hannganahalli (1999).

Today the traditional flowers are grown in area of 283 thousand hectare producing 2295 thousand tonnes of loose flower and 833 thousand tonnes of cut flowers (Ministry of Agriculture and farmer welfares 2021-22). India plays significant role in the trade of potted flowering plants, ornamentals foliage plants for landscaping, turf grasses, cut foliage, dry flowers, specialty f lowers, annual flower seeds and fillers. India exported flower produce, worth Rs. 707.81 crore (APEDA 2022-23) that consist of fresh cut flowers (to Europe, Japan, Australia and Middle East, USA), loose flowers (for expatriate Indians in the Gulf and Europe), cut foliage (to Europe), dry flowers (to USA, Europe, Japan, Russia and Australia) and potted plants (Middle East) besides seeds and planting material. The major market for domestic flowers is in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad etc. are the major market for domestic flowers in India.

Millets are a type of minor cereals found in the Poaceae family. Millets are often described as “Nutri-Cereals” since they contain more nutrients than commonly produced main cereals. They are an important part of human’s diet in the world. These are foods with a high nutritional content, gluten-free and have nutraceutical qualities. The adequate amount of protein (essential amino acid), micronutrients and phytochemicals are found in millets. The phytochemicals found in millet grains enhance human health by lowering cholesterol and phytates in the body. Millets are full of antioxidants, minerals including dietary fibre, iron, calcium and magnesium that are vital for battling a variety of diseases. These are beneficial to include in our daily diet because the grain is healthy and nutritious. They decrease blood pressure, prevent cancer and lessen the chance of tumour growth. The rich nutrient content in millet has many health advantages such as cancer, obesity, lower risk of cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal issues, migraines and asthma. People utilise millet-based products to fight a variety of nutritional deficiencies and diseases.

Minor millets, that belong to members of the cereal grass family, are advantageous in areas where large crops like Bread wheat, Rice paddy, and maize are relatively ineffective because they have a wide range of genetic diversity and thrive in marginal environments. The varied soil types, temperatures, heat and light cycles, and rainfall patterns across India all support the cultivation of minor millets. Finger millet, barnyard millet, foxtail millet, proso millet, and many more types of minor millet are used in agriculture. Minor millets have long been an essential component of Indian tribal societies’ agricultural systems and practices. They have used little millets for both famine prevention and ethnomedicine since the beginning of time. This chapter focuses on how little millet could help people have access to food and nutrition security while reducing hunger and malnutrition.

Plant disease management technique applicable these days are predominantly relies on hazardous synthetic chemicals that are efficiently deleterious to the human and environment as well. Crop loss every year due to plant pathogen and pest is ranging 30–50%. Nanotechnology, proven advantageous and can offer positive environmental impacts over these harmful chemical pesticides by reducing toxicity, increasing the feasibility of pesticides which are normally baffling in water and improving longevity. Now a days and in coming year, it becoming one of the rapidly growing, advancing and most fascinating technological sciences in many disciplines like medicine, science, technology and more importantly in agriculture, to protect crop from different kinds of pest and pathogen on which most of India’s population is completely dependent. This chapter briefly describe the introduction, role and impact of nanotech in management of plant disease. It is considered as modern technology in facing these widespread destructive challenges and causes in controlling in plant disease. In this chapter we tried to summarize the importance of nanotech in sustainable agriculture and application of various nanoparticles (NPs) in the management of plant disease. NPs can be produced by distinct practices, biological and chemical are one of them important methods. Biological method is widely and commercially used. Also, shortly describe the historical background for some NPs types. This chapter briefly focus on the synthesis of some compounds of NPs, for example silver NPs, silver and silica silver etc and their influence on plant disease also briefly describe the working principle of AgNPs against microorganism. NPs may act in accordance with chemical pesticides. Because of microscopic size, NPs have wide scope in virus control in plant. Now day’s biosensors are used for the quick and precise pathogen detection and diagnosis. Regardless of immense scope of NPs application in managing the diseases of plant, there are precise apprehensions, weakness and risk associated with the utility of NPs in agriculture. It is necessary to be figured out on primacy basis prior to trade of NPs in agriculture.

Insects are prevalent on this globe due to their varied adaptations and hence constitute the largest component of the animal kingdom. Only around 5 per cent of the total insect species, act as pests, rest either are beneficial like honey bees, lac insect, silk worms etc. or are harmless. Insect pests can be of medical, veterinary, house hold and agricultural importance, as these creatures harm our health, animals’ health, our belongings and also the agricultural health. Though all these components are equally important but, in this book, the last one i.e. agricultural health, have been taken into consideration. Insect pests cause around 20 per cent loss to our crops by directly or indirectly affecting the crops both quantitatively and qualitatively. The insects have different types of mouth parts which are used for sucking, biting and chewing, sponging and lapping, siphoning etc. for food required for their survival and the insects with sucking and biting, and chewing types of mouth parts cause much of the damage. The mites (Phylum Arthropoda) though do not belong to class Insecta but in some instances also are of economic importance as they cause economic damage to agricultural crops and produce.

Abstract
India’s agriculture sector plays a critical role in economic development, offering employment to a significant rural population and contributing notably to GDP. Despite limited natural resources, India is among the world’s top producers of various crops and livestock. However, post-harvest losses, infrastructure gaps, and limited value addition hamper its full export potential. In recent years, agricultural exports have surge, with rice, spices, sugar, buffalo meat, and marine products emerging as key contributor. India has also expanded its export footprints across major global markets, including the USA, China, Bangladesh, and the UAE. Recognizing the strategic importance of agri-exports for economic growth, employment generation, and rural development, the government has launched initiatives such as the Agriculture Export Policy (AEP), Agri Export Zones (AEZs), and Market Access Initiatives (MAI). These measures aim to boost market access, infrastructure, and competitiveness. The integration of e-NAM, focus on quality standards, branding through Geographical Indications (GI), and establishment of Agri-Cells in key countries further support India’s goal of becoming a global agriexport powerhouse. This work underscores the importance of a coherent export strategy to enhance farmer income, promote sustainable practices, and position India as a key player in the global agricultural value chain.

Tikka or Leaf Spot
Cercospora arachidicola/ Phaeoisariopsis personatum
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Disease is caused by two different pathogens, namely, Cercospora arachidicola and Phaeoisariopsis personatum.
• The two pathogens mostly occur on the same leaves.
• The Cercospora arachidicola appears about a month earlier than the Phaeoisariopsis personatum.
• The two pathogens cause symptoms differing each other. Early leaf spot
• Sub-circular dark brown spots having 1 to over 10 mm diameter are produced on the upper leaflet surface.
• Spots are of lighter shade of brown on the lower side of the leaflets.
• Yellow halo is seen around the brown spots.
• Dark brown in colour on the upper leaflet surface where most sporulation occurs and a lighter shade of brown on the lower leaflet surface.

Ascochyta Blight
Diagnostic Symptoms
• All above ground parts of the plant are infected.
• Round or elongated lesions, bearing irregularly depressed brown spot and surrounded by a brownish red margin on leaf.
• Similar spots may appear on the stem and pods.
• Spots on the stem and pods have pycnidia arranged in concentric circles as minute black dots.
• When the lesions girdle the stem, the portion above the point of attack rapidly dies.
• If the main stem is girdles at the collar region, the whole plant dies (Fig.1).

• On the upper surface of the spots, fructificationsof the fungus appear as black specks unevenly and individual bananas appear undersized and their flesh develops a buff pinkish colour, and store poorly (Fig. 1).

Diagnostic Symptoms
• Symptoms appear on all aerial and tender parts of the vine.
• Irregular, yellowish, translucent spots on the upper surface of the leaves.
• Correspondingly on the lower surface, dirty white, powdery growth of fungus appears.
• Affected leaves become, yellow and brown and gets dried due to necrosis
• Premature defoliation.
• Dwarfing of tender shoots.
• Infected leaves, shoots and tendrils are covered by whitish growth of the fungus.
• White growth of fungus on berries which subsequently becomes leathery and shrivels. Infected berries turn hard, bluish green and then brown.
• Later infection of berries results in soft rot symptoms. Normally, the fully grown or maturing berries do not contact fresh infection as stomata turn non-functional.
• No cracking of the skin of the berries (Fig.1).
